He's been in, he's been out, but he's back again to help Rochdale return to the football league.
Style caught up with the centre-forward to discuss two decades on the field...

Who/what first inspired your football career?

Tommy, my older brother, has been a constant source of inspiration for me. Even though he is no longer with us, his influence continues to drive me forward.

Since Rochdale’s unfortunate relegation to the National League, how do you feel the team has done so far and what hopes do you have for the rest of the season?

This season has been marked by stages of success for the team. We collectively recognise that both the team and the squad are still a work in progress, but we're confident that we will continue to improve as the season unfolds. Our mindset and attitude revolve around a commitment to constant development, both on and off the pitch. If we maintain this focus and bring consistency to our performances, we believe we'll be in a strong position by the end of the season.

You returned to Rochdale after a few difficult years for the club during and post lockdown - what is it about Rochdale that keeps you coming back?

Since the day I first joined Rochdale, I've experienced a genuine sense of acceptance and support from the fans, my fellow players, and the entire staff, and this is a significant reason why I chose to come back.

Above all else, my happiness here plays a crucial role in my decision-making process. It's a driving force that enables me to approach the game with the same joy and enthusiasm I had as a child. I believe that this happiness has been reflected in my performances over the years, and I've been able to create magical moments that both the fans and the teams I've been a part of can enjoy.

Having beaten the all time goalscoring record for Rochdale AFC, what are you hoping to achieve personally now in your career?

That's a great question! Looking ahead, there are a couple of personal goals I have in mind. First and foremost, I aspire to stay injury-free so that I can fully enjoy the twilight years of my career and continue to give my absolute best for the team. Secondly, on a more personal note, I'm driven by my family, especially my two boys, Hughie and Henri, to watch me playing, scoring goals, and pursuing my passion.

Your role has changed over the years to now being a veteran of the team - what advice do you give to younger players coming through?

I firmly believe that actions speak louder than words...

You’ve played under many managers at Rochdale - Keith Hill, Brian Barry Murphy, Jim Bentley, and now Jimmy McNulty - in what ways have they influenced you as a player and person?

I had the privilege of spending a significant amount of time under Keith Hill's management, and he has been, and still is, a crucial mentor in my career. I owe him a great deal for the trust he placed in me, giving me the freedom and opportunity to play upfront and eventually lead the team as captain.

From the moment we started working together, there was a mutual understanding, and we experienced the most successful period in the club's history during that time. I have nothing but respect for him.

Brian and Jimmy have also played influential roles in shaping me into a more well-rounded player. They've guided me in adapting to various formations and styles of play and encouraged me to view the game through the lens of each player. They have been invaluable to my growth as a player and as a person.

What are some of your most memorable moments in football?

Winning promotion to the Premier League with Norwich City and achieving promotion with Rochdale to League One have undoubtedly been the standout moments in my career.

Among the unforgettable highlights are the memories of making my debut, a moment that will forever hold a special place in my heart, and the incredible experience of stepping onto the hallowed turf of Old Trafford to face Manchester United and taking on Tottenham and Leeds. These matches against top-tier opponents are reminders of the remarkable journey and opportunities that football has brought into my life.

Outside of football, how do you switch off?

Being with my partner, Nicola, and my two boys provides me with a valuable escape from the demands of football and business. It's during these moments that I can truly switch off and immerse myself in family life. When I'm not with them, I enjoy playing golf, tennis, and table tennis. Additionally, I have a passion for reading, which allows me to explore new worlds and ideas beyond the football field.

Who would be in your dream 5-a-side team?

Ederson, Brazilian Ronaldo, Messi, Zidane, Virgil Van Dijk
