ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE GOES DINO-MAD! Dippy is in town! The famous dinosaur is here until 28th June and to celebrate, Rochdale BID has been working with businesses to ensure the town centre is dino mad, with lots of dinosaur inspired events and activities. The main event is the DinoDale hunt, which sees budding explorers of all ages hunting down hidden letters within 10 different framed dino-bones across the town centre! The frames contain a QR code, where explorers can use their smart phones to find out more about the encased dinosaur. The letters can then be added to the map in the DinoDale Guide to spell out the name of a dinosaur. Competition entries can be posted in the Dino post box outside the BID office in the Wheatsheaf or emailed to admin@rochdalebid.co.uk and there are amazing prizes to be won. An online version of the DinoDale guide is available at www.rochdaletowncentre.co.uk/news/dinodale-hunt Businesses involved in the DinoDale Hunt route include Buckley Menswear, Couzens, Costa Coffee, Fizz Bomb and Number Ten.

@RochdaleTown

With 60 thousand new visitors already embarking on Rochdale Town Centre, venues such as The Medicine Tap, Bombay Brew and the Flying Horse are seeing a huge increase in footfall, and are proving popular with their new dino-themed kids’ menus. There’s also the DinoDale Coffee Trail, which includes The Medicine Tap, Pudding Paradise, Roasted & Toasted, Abaco, Arts Café, Russells and Clock Tower. Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre and the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre are both hosting Dino themed events. And there are three very special visitors in the Wheatsheaf! See for yourself, be careful though, one will roar back! Paul Ambrose, BID Manager commented: "We're keen to showcase what Rochdale has to offer, from our established bars and restaurants, to the new businesses around town. DinoDale is about engaging and supporting local businesses, and showing everybody that Rochdale’s strong community is a welcome and vibrant one. Rochdale isn’t just a few businesses doing well, it’s about everybody doing well; it’s about what we can achieve if we pull together and use the Town Centre we have - it’s a wealth of opportunity". BRIAN BARRY-MURPHY

Style caught up with Rochdale AFC manager, Brian Barry-Murphy to discuss the season so far, how he keeps a positive mindset - and his love for Oprah. Style: What are your thoughts on the season so far? Brian: It's been the most amazing journey for all of us really. It’s encompassed every different type of experience, both positive and difficult. We’ve had the most exhilarating, spine tingling moments, like going to Man Utd and having amazing cup success and then having loads and loads of players injured and barely being able to field a team. But then putting up performances like we did that night at Old Trafford; one of the most memorable nights in the club’s history, if not the most. And to have the game against Newcastle was an amazing experience for everyone and really portrayed our town in the most positive light. We’ve had huge individual recognition for our players, such as Luke Matherson moving to Wolves, Ian Henderson receiving North West Player of the Year. And loads of attention being given to young players in our Academy. So there’s been individual and collective real achievements and loads of adversity on the other side of it. But the players have overcome every challenge and we’ve always bounced back, irrespective of how difficult it’s been, and that’s been the overriding theme of the season so far. And that’s what we’re focusing on as we head into the final part of this season really.

"We're in a position of strength now we're going to attack these last ten games" 4

Are the team feeling positive about the rest of the season? We’re going to attack these last ten games. We’re in a position of strength now with all of our big players coming back to full fitness. The players are really driven to show what we’re about and how good we think we are and that will be reflected in our league position at the end of the season. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

How do you feel about Luke Matherson being sold to Wolves? I think Luke is an example of what our club is all about. We look after our young players and give them every opportunity to be the best they can be. The ones that excel will never be stopped from progressing or kept at the club for selfish reasons. We don’t talk about what we’re going to do for our young players – we just do it. The proof is in the pudding with that. Following Luke's million pound transfer, how is the club planning to invest it? The club always look to invest every type of finance we get sensibly and in the best interests of everyone. I’m obviously not directly responsible for that but I would imagine all different aspects of the club will be helped. A large part of our income over the years has been player sales and reinvesting that back into the club. The big thing on the horizon is investment in a training ground, which is high priority and there seems to be progress being made at the moment. This season we’ve been based at Rochdale Cricket Club which has been brilliant for the players as they’ve had a hub as such, but the next step is for us to get our own base. Hopefully there will be investment in player recruitment this summer and we can excite the fans with some new signings. On the last day of the transfer deadline, when Luke was sold to Wolves, David Bottomley (Chief Executive of RAFC) was working right until the end of the window trying to acquire a player for us which would have been a club record signing. David put hours and hours of work into that so it was disappointing not to be able to get it over the line, but he’s not one to give up and I think he’ll definitely be looking to reward the supporters with that in the summer.

There’s a wide range of ages in the squad - how does this affect the team? It’s a fascinating and unique aspect of the squad. The older brigade nurture the younger players and give them an environment where they feel liberated and learn to express themselves. And it keeps the older players really vibrant and looking to improve themselves, so it really works both ways. It’s a brilliant dynamic really.

For myself and the rest of the club it’s very important because it gives us a chance to portray, on a national and international level, the values and the traits that we know exist in our club and reward the people who do all the unsung work behind the scenes. The way that we’ve been received by the media, and supporters from other clubs, and the respect and admiration we’re now being shown is long overdue.

What has been your personal highlight of the season so far?

What distinguishes Rochdale from other clubs?

The two significant fixtures that stand out in my mind are Accrington Stanley, a big local derby, where we brought a huge amount of our fans. It came at the end of a very difficult run of games where a lot of people were saying we were playing well but not getting the results. But we stuck to our principles and really played well.

The way our club does things is totally different from the large majority of clubs in the UK in that we do things within our means. There’s loads of clubs that have ended up in the conference or been relegated right out of the league that have just spent loads of money and every summer would sign players and totally change their squad - they had no real identity. Our club, in my eyes, is a club that brings through our own young players, puts them in a first team environment and puts them on the path to what can be an extraordinary career.

The other one was probably Rotherham with 15 year old Ethan Brierley on the bench, we really struggled to put out a team, and no one gave us a chance, but we put on a display for our supporters that day that was immense. Did you and the team enjoy the press attention for the high profile games? Some of the players like it more than others I think! Some of them love a bit of attention and others, I’m thinking Callum Camps in particular, hate it.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

It can create a very special feeling when you get success knowing that you haven’t taken any shortcuts and the supporters always seem to be behind that, even when we drive them mad with some bad performances or bore them to death; they always seem to put up with it as long as they know that we’re doing our best. (continued...) 5

My fiancée Sarah [Sarah-Jane Crawford] and my daughter Eleanor have a huge part to play in helping me to switch off because they won’t accept the football chat. So if I’m with the both of them, it means I won’t be allowed to ruminate about football problems. If you weren’t involved in football – what other career could you see yourself in? My fiancée Sarah is obviously a very good radio presenter and I’ve had some practice with her. I think I would have done well at that career. Purely because of the accent. (...continued)

You’ve got a great fan base in Rochdale. What’s the best thing about Dale supporters? We’re constantly looking to increase our fan base. The support for the club throughout the whole town is immense. Everywhere I stop off in Rochdale, in every part of the community, people know about the team, the academy, the staff. I was always amazed that we didn’t have much more of an attendance for league games but the people who come are amazing. I think the whole town is right behind the club. And at the actual games the patience and the understanding from our supporters has been humbling at times really. The couple of times where I’ve sensed the real frustrations amongst our own supporters I think has been entirely justified and we try to respond to it. That connection between the supporters and the team has been brilliant and long may that continue. You always seem to keep a very positive mindset, irrespective of the result. What keeps you motivated? It’s just something that I’ve learnt. The most beneficial experiences are when things go wrong, that’s the best form of learning you can get. I just became process-obsessed in terms of the way we do things. Everybody wants to win and 6

everybody wants to get the results. But to get those results takes constant application of the same traits over and over again; the minute you start changing that process you’re just ‘making it up’, you’re just hoping things happen. I know from past experiences that the best rewards are when you’ve gone through really tough spells and you know at the end of it things will turn your way. And when that actually happens it all makes sense. How's your work/life balance? Work/life balance in football can be very difficult; it’s pretty intense in terms of the games and training schedule. It’s something that I haven’t mastered yet. The key things are to eat well and exercise well and I used to be brilliant at that, but now I'm not as good. Still reading a lot though, so that’s always good for me. I can be reading all the time, I love it. What do you do to switch off? Movies, music and Ireland! My music is often laughed at, but it is my own taste. If I ever want to really feel good about everything I just go to Ireland. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with England, I love England. But for me, the minute I land in Ireland, everything feels different, it’s amazing. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Who inspires you? Other than Pep, I would say when we met Mauricio Pochettino we were in awe of him, his vision for the game and his mindset; he could see things were going to happen before they happened, he was amazing. I read all of his books before I got home that day. I look at a lot of psychology and mindset stuff. I love Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith - the lads think I’m off my head. We have our own psychology expert in the club now, Gareth Morgan, who is from the FA, he’s the go-to guy for all the players in terms of the different things they go through on and off the pitch, but no one uses him more than me. He’s a huge part of our club and he does it on a voluntary basis. But the most significant person was my father. He was my first example of what a manager looks and acts like because he was managing teams when I was very young and I got to see that in an Irish sporting capacity. So I probably had a very unfair advantage over other people! And the likes of Tony Robbins, who is a life coach, but speaks about stuff that references sport and football. But I would say, Oprah is still the best. Ruth Parkinson

The Filter House turned Manor House A stunning transformation; now one of the finest residences in the North of England, if not the country. Location…

The Conservation Area of Wardle.

Property Detail…

This incredible Manor is a spectacular conversion of a substantial 1930’s former Water Authority building which has created one of the finest residences in the North of England. Housed within the Watergrove Country Park, the property is surrounded by 900 acres of some of the best landscapes in the north of England, amongst an abundance of natural wildlife.

The Modern Day…

The property was transformed in 2008 with some of the Country’s most renowned interior designers and craftsmen employed to utilise the character from the original industrial framework and to capture the imagination of the most discerning of owners. The result is breath-taking and provides approximately 11,000 square feet of the most stunning, luxurious accommodation available anywhere, including one of the largest entertaining lounges in the country measuring 3,500 square feet, complete with bar area and glazed gallery.

The property has won many accolades for exceptional standards of interior finish, from the ‘Stuart Frazer’ Sie-Matic kitchen, nine individual ‘Villeroy & Boch’ bathroom suites, ‘Cedia sound System’ installed throughout, and delightful landscaped gardens. Set over three floors, the property houses a fantastic reception entrance with return staircase to all levels, and seven bedrooms, complete with en-suites, additional master family bathrooms, a large family kitchen, dining room, entertainment lounge, snug, cinema room and gymnasium overlooking an indoor heated swimming pool.

Outdoor Living…

The property is approached via remotely operated entrance gates leading to the rear of the property. The driveway leads past the custom built feature waterfall and koi pond to the side, past the triple garage and continues to the front then sweeps all the way around the property in a 360 degree loop through landscaped gardens of almost two acres, which wrap around the property with raised lawns, two breeze huts, raised decking area, outdoor lighting with sound system and a small paddock. The house enjoys seclusion and privacy, but the property is within reasonable access of the motorway network and surrounding amenities in nearby Littleborough and Rochdale. Located on the fringe of the Country Park, one can enjoy extensive national walks, mountain bike trails and bridle ways and a reservoir with its own boating club.

A Brief History... The building itself was once a water filter house. Yes, that’s right, this property was built in 1936 to filter the supply of drinking water to Rochdale, allowing up to three million gallons of drinking water from Watergrove reservoir to be treated every day. In 1992 a new treatment plant was opened leaving the Filter House redundant and it lay in a state of disrepair until 2007, when the then owners, United Utilities, placed the property on the market.

KATIE MCGLYNN

Scooping the award for 'Best Serial Drama Performance', at the recent NTA's, Rochdale actress Katie McGlynn, who played Sinead Tinker in Coronation Street, has certainly got an exciting career ahead of her. Katie joined the nation's favourite soap in 2012, and played the much-loved, quirky Sinead, until the character lost her battle with cervical cancer in heartbreaking scenes last October. Style caught up with Katie to chat about the NTA's, her opinion on online trolls, life after the Street, and her 'mean' spag bol... 10

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Have you been busy since leaving Corrie? Yeah I’ve been pretty busy to be honest. I had just over a week in Mexico which was nice. I managed to squeeze it in around other stuff because I’ve had a lot going on. I’ve constantly been in and out of London. I’ve got things coming up, nothing I can say, but I start something next week which will be fun. Are you still living up North? I’m living up here at the moment. I have been toying with the idea of moving to London, but I’m going to see how I get on living up here and how often I need to be down there. ITV Pictures

What would you love to work on in future? I’d love to be in one of the big, gritty dramas! Are you missing Corrie? I’m not actually no, because I’ve been involved in so much; I don’t feel like I’ve fully left yet. I miss the people more than anything, but I’m not far away so I’m always going to keep in touch with them. So hopefully I won’t need to miss it that much. How did it feel to win the NTA award for Best Serial Drama Performance? I wasn’t expecting it. It was just nice to be nominated, so to win, I was just like “what the heck?!”. I was really happy. And awards like the NTA’s are so grand, you see all sorts of people. I bumped into Joanna Lumley and David Schwimmer – I’m a huge Friend’s fan. We walked past him in the corridor and he said congratulations; I was like “oh my gosh!”. So many amazing people said congratulations.

It was lovely that you dedicated the award to your Grandad Denis. How do you think he'd have reacted to you winning? I think he’d be over the moon! He’d be really happy. I think he’d be annoyed that I was leaving his favourite soap though. Following the tragic news about Caroline Flack, what’s your opinion on media scrutiny and online trolling? Do things need to change? It’s tragic and I really feel for Caroline’s family and friends. You never know what is going on in someone’s head. I think everyone has assumed that it’s to do with the media and all the trolling. I do think something needs to change in the way that the media highlight things that don’t necessarily need to be highlighted. I think there does need to be some sort of policing with the trolls. How do you deal with trolling? I try not to look at it. But sometimes, - I know I shouldn’t - but I do read the comments. And just reading a little bit of it puts me in a really bad mood all day and makes me question a lot of things. It does upset me. I’m a bit biased because I guess I’m in the public eye, but I do think people need to realise that we’re all normal people and just because our jobs are in the public eye it doesn’t give people the right to say whatever they want about us or write whatever they want. We are human beings. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

You’ve mentioned that you’ve been through your own mental health struggles, especially after filming Sinead’s storyline? Yeah, ITV offered help while we were filming, but I felt fine. But it was afterwards, when I watched some of it back with the audience; I got really upset. I was just randomly crying for no reason and that’s not like me because I’m not really much of a cryer. A lot of my friends say I’m a bit hard and I’m not, but it just takes a lot for me to cry. So the fact that I was randomly crying didn’t make sense to me, so I went to see someone about it just to make sure I was ok. And they said I was grieving because I’d played the character for so long. When I watched it I felt like I watching my friend die and it was just really sad. And then the realisation that I’d actually left Corrie and my friends there, and the big life change. We can see from your Instagram that you’re on a massive health kick... Yeah, the thing that the storyline has taught me is no one is invincible. I’ve met young women who are going through what Sinead went through, in real life. They looked young and healthy and had their world at their feet and then this hits them like a bag of bricks. For me, it’s all well and good losing weight, but it’s more about being healthy inside. You never know what’s going to be around the corner, so I just want to be ready to rock ‘n’ roll. (continued...) 11

(...continued)

The storyline raised awareness of cervical cancer and has helped to increase the amount of women going for their smear tests which is amazing… Yeah, I’m really pleased about that. We did the storyline for a reason. It’s raising awareness so that people know the symptoms and the signs, so they can get ahead of it, and so that women go for their smear tests. Smear tests can save your life - I’d say to anyone who is putting it off you just need to go and get checked for peace of mind. Just because I’ve left [Coronation Street] it doesn’t mean I’m going to stop talking about it, because I think it’s really important.

Your friend Lisa George is on Dancing on Ice at the moment - would you ever go on it? I’m quite clumsy so I don’t think I’d be the best participant. I’d be like Bambi. I’m super proud of Lisa though, I really am. If you could choose three dinner guests who would they be? And what would you cook? Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler and Johnny Depp. I’d make my mean spag bol! To check you’re still a Rochdale girl… What does cruckle mean? Going over on your ankle! If someone is ‘pecking your head’ what are they doing? Doing your head in! Oh that’s another colloquialism isn’t it, erm, annoying someone! What’s a ginnel? It’s a thin passage. I thought that was a real word?

Is it a bap, barm, teacake, bun, roll, or muffin? Gosh, well this is the big debate. I know a lot of Rochdale people would say different to what I say. If it’s like a sandwich I would have to call it a muffin, but oh god, it is like a roll and I know a lot of people say bap. What does "it’s cracking the flags" mean? It’s really hot. If someone says "it’s like Blackpool illuminations in here", what’s happened? There’s a lot of lights going on! My dad says that a lot. How would you encourage young people in Rochdale to follow their dreams, as you have done? If you want it enough, you need to just go and get it. You have to 100% commit to it and just focus on what you want to do. You just need to keep you head up and keep going. I do think anything is possible.

DISCOVER YOUR CREATIVE SIDE ALL ACROSS THE ARTS

In my previous column I presented a flavour of what is coming up in 2020 across our borough – ‘a plethora of opportunities to engage with the whole spectrum of the arts, opportunities provided by artists from highly talented locals to the internationally renowned’. I concluded with – ‘never let it be said that, it’s boring around here, there’s nothing going on’. I would now like to paraphrase John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Presidential Address, January 20, 1961 And so, my fellow Rochdalians: ask not what arts and culture can do for you — ask what you can do for arts and culture. Why not engage with your own creativity, develop your artistic side, be part of our cultural life? In 2020 across our borough there is a plethora of opportunities to engage with the whole spectrum of the arts, opportunities provided by a wide range of groups and organisations. You could, write a short story or a poem, create a piece of visual art, join a choir, try your hand at acting or dancing or even learn circus skills.

DIPPY

The Natural History Museum’s famous dinosaur, Dippy, is settling into Rochdale, as part of his record breaking tour. The famous Diplodocus cast left the museum for the first time in 2018 to embark on a national tour. Rochdale, which is the only North West stop, plays host to the Dippy until 28 June at Number One Riverside with an accompanying Dippy exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale. It’s free to see Dippy and visit the Dippy exhibition. Dippy on Tour has proved a record breaker, with over 1.5m people visiting the much-loved dinosaur at his tour stops so far; Dorset, Birmingham, Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle and Cardiff. Rochdale is the penultimate stop, before the tour finishes at Norwich Cathedral in October 2020. All events and activities, and booking information, can also be found at: www.visitrochdale.com. Style caught up with Dippy to discuss his new home at Number One Riverside, life in the Jurassic period, and why he's never actually met a T Rex... 16

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

How do you pronounce Diplodocus? OOH, I get lots of questions about this, but there’s a knack to it. Diplodocus should be pronounced ‘DIP-low DOCK-us’ with the emphasis on the dip and the dock. So now you know! How old are you? Oh, that’s a personal question! Well, I am actually looking very good for my age, so I don’t mind telling you. I am 115 years old. I am a cast however, so I’m a lot more youthful than your average Diplodocus. The Diplodocus species that I am cast from lived in the Late Jurassic period, that’s around 155–145 million years ago.

How much do you weigh and long are you? A diplodocus like me would have weighed between 20000–25000 kg (20–25 tonnes) and be around 26 metres long (around the length of three buses). How do you hold up such a long neck? I have up to 19 neck vertebrae, but lots of mammals, like whales and giraffes, have no more than seven, limiting how long their necks can get. I have a very petite head, which is easy to support.

My dinosaur contemporaries would have been the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus. The Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops lived much later, in the Late Cretaceous period (100–66 million years ago), so I never got to meet them. I’m not sure I would want to. I think the T Rex would have been pretty scary and he might have eaten somebody like me!

One of the things I like most about being here is that there was a lot of pollution many years ago because of all the factories, but now people are very interested in protecting the environment. The building I am in, Number One Riverside, has lots of environmentally friendly features, like a biomass boiler and sedum roof, and the River Roch was opened recently in the town centre, so now there is a lot more wildlife in this area. What’s it like being on tour?

How many bones do you have? I have 292 bones. This includes 70+ tail vertebrae and nearly 60 finger and toe bones in my hands and feet. I also have 46 teeth. An adult human skeleton consists of 206 bones and 32 teeth.

How fast did Dippy move?

What do you eat?

Who is your closest living relative?

I’m a herbivore and eat soft leaves from ferns and conifer trees.

I feel very at home around birds, as they are my closest living relative. Modern birds are members of the theropod group of dinosaurs, and I’m a sauropod. Sauropods and theropods are both different but related types of dinosaur.

Some say my teeth are not my prettiest feature, but they are very handy when it comes to filling me up. They are set in rows like a comb, so I can use them to strip soft leaves from the trees. My teeth also like to recycle themselves, and I have a new tooth in each tooth position every 35 days. I know it’s not a good habit these days, buy I don’t tend to chew my food, I just swallow it.

I am most at home in a natural environment, so I love all the countryside, like the Pennines and places like Healey Dell and Hollingworth Lake. There are also lots of green flag parks around. One of them, Broadfield Park, is only a few minutes’ walk from here, so I will try and take a look at that before I head onto my last stop, Norwich Cathedral, at the end of June.

My motto has always been that slow and steady winds the race, so I take my time and move at about 5–10 mph.

What do you think of Rochdale? I am very impressed with my latest home. More than 60,000 people have already been to see me, so I am feeling really welcome here in the North West. I have to say, the people here are a really friendly bunch!

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

It is tiring, but also lots of fun. I do like to travel and have seen lots of different places in the last few years, like Glasgow, Belfast and Cardiff. Rochdale is one of the most unique venues on the tour and is smaller than some of the other places I’ve seen. I am also in a very modern building, which is unusual for me. It’s a very nice backdrop for all the photos people keep taking of me. I do like to look good. How do you deal with the press intrusion? It seems that I am very popular, but I’m trying to keep my feet on the ground and not get too starry. I promise I won’t start asking for a bigger dressing room than everyone else or wearing sunglasses inside. I hope people who visit me are inspired to learn more about the natural world and be inspired to protect our shared earth.

Rochdale husband & wife team open contemporary town centre toy shop ToysARoo, an independent toy shop, specialising in quality wooden and plush products is proving a hit with Rochdale families, since it's grand superhero-themed opening last October. The contemporary new store, located in the St Mary's Gate area (behind Brown's Cakes), is the first dedicated toy shop to open in the town in over 15 years.

What makes you different to other toy shops? We stock toys that children will enjoy playing with, that are durable and have an educational value. When you’re shopping for toys, you should ask not what the toy can do for your child but what your child can do with the toy! We love to encourage imagination, story-telling and creative play. We also offer areas in the shop where children can actually play.

Style caught up with ToysARoo owners, husband and wife team, Taff and Karen Ahmed, to discover more about their magical toy shop...

Do you have an online store too? We do have an online store which is www.toysaroo.com, feel free to browse our full range. We have so many toys available we just can’t fit them all in the shop!

Why did you decide to open in Rochdale? We live locally in Rochdale and we know there hasn’t been a toy shop in the town for many years. We believe that local shoppers need to be given more choice and an opportunity to buy good quality and long-lasting toys for their children.

We also have a WhatsApp messaging service through our store number, 01706 254477 were customers can ask questions and get a response pretty quickly but we would love for them to visit the shop to see our range.

Is it a family business? Yes, even the kids help out at weekends and in the school holidays! What brands do you stock? We stock a wide range of brands – our specialism is wooden toys. We stock products from leading toy suppliers such as Hape, Small Foot, Goki, Viga, Wonderworld, Le Toy Van, Jumini, Studio Circus, Galt and Melissa and Doug. We also stock a great range of soft toys from leading brands like Ty and Aurora. And we’re also fans of the long-lasting toughness of Playmobil, even though they’re made of plastic, those little people have stood the tests of time and are great for encouraging imaginative play and story telling. This year, we’re looking to get even more great brands on board with us.

Is it true the toys come to life at night? Of course! You must have seen Toy Story, it must be a true story because we often arrive in the mornings to find our mascot, Kevin the Giraffe raiding the book corner, he likes a good story. We need to get some more books in store – we think he’s read them all now! Oh and the Mermaids are always trying on their jewels, they’re very fancy but they have to watch out for the pesky pirates in their pirate ship!

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR

MENTAL WELLBEING

As part of Style's focus on mental health and wellbeing, Lisa Drake, RTT, NLP, TLT Practitioner and Life Coach, from Rapid Change Hypnotherapy & Coaching Practice in Rochdale, shares five ways to change unhelpful thinking patterns and help improve your overall mental health... Sometimes, life can become challenging for us. I see many people in my practice who get stuck in certain thinking and behaviour patterns that are simply not helpful in their lives. Things like being a people pleaser, dreading new situations or change, feeling stuck in the past, negative thoughts and overthinking things, to name a few. If you're struggling with any of these right now, here are a few tips to help...

1. MAKE YOURSELF A PRIORITY Putting everyone else first can lead to resentment, frustration and, worst of all, burn-out. If you're constantly filling up everyone else's cup, who is going to fill yours when it's empty? It's your job to fill your cup first, then you can help others fill theirs.

2. EMBRACE CHANGE Change can make people uneasy and anxious as they're unsure what the outcome will be and have got so used to things just the way they are. When change happens, it can make some people fearful of the future, anxious about how they will cope and sad for the loss of how things were. Remember, change is constant in life and try to embrace it. Something I've always kept in mind is this - 'accept the things you cannot change and change the things you can't accept'.

3. LET GO OF THE PAST Sometimes we find it very difficult to move on from people or past situations and we end up ruminating and feeling stuck. This can lead to depression, anxiety and low self esteem.

Cut out & keep

mental wellbeing

I hope these little tips help you. Some of them are from my own experience - I know what it’s like first hand to struggle but I also know that change is possible.

To help work through why you're feeling stuck, look inwards first. What is it about you that is holding you back? Practising self love can help so much with this; even just telling yourself 'I Am Enough' can help, as our mind will eventually accept it and create a different kind of energy for you.

Remember, the one thing we can change in any given moment is our thoughts – make them work for you instead of against you. Lisa Drake

Try this… • Close your eyes. Get an image in your mind of how you want to be and hold it in your mind. • Relax into the image and use language that matches the image, for example 'I am ready for the next chapter', 'I’m strong and confident', 'I have phenomenal coping skills'. • Keep re-running that picture in your mind - make it bigger and brighter, make it as if it is now. • When you do this, your mind thinks ‘I’ve been here before, I know how to do this, it’s easy’ and it will eventually accept it as the norm.

These suggestions are not a subsitute for medical advice from your doctor. If you're finding things very difficult, remember you're not alone; try to talk to a trusted friend or family member, your GP, a mental health professional or call the Samaritans on 116 123 / email jo@samaritans.org.

4. BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND I see many many people who do this to themselves regularly. That's because at some point in their life, something happened which lead them to form a belief that they're not good enough or not worthy. You know what? It's simply not true. As soon as you catch yourself saying negative things to yourself, stop, and change the thought into something positive. Be your own best friend and speak to yourself as you would to someone you love. It might feel weird at first, but eventually your mind will accept it as the norm.

5. BREAK THE CYCLE OF OVERTHINKING Again, this is a form of self-sabotage. A good way to help get your thoughts out of your head is to write them all down, give yourself 15 mins to do this. Then, do something like go for a walk, clean the house, read a book - anything that will interrupt the pattern of overthinking. Often we overthink about things that will never happen. You really can choose your thoughts – why not choose better ones and contribute to your happiness in the moment.

HYPNOTHERAPY & COACHING LISA DRAKE – RAPID TRANSFORMATIONAL THERAPY, NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING, TIME LINE THERAPY PRACTITIONER AND LIFE COACH Rapid Transformational Therapy (Marisa Peer Method) is a very powerful technique, which will get to the root cause of your issue, usually in just 1 – 3 sessions. 85% of my clients are free in just 1 session, it really is that powerful! I specialise in: • Anxiety • Depression • Low Self Esteem • Motivation However, I have also helped people of all ages, with various other issues. Here’s what a recent client had to say, following their session:

“I had my session with Lisa around 2 months ago now for my anxiety which I’ve dealt with for the past 2 years, and I can honestly say she has changed my life! A massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders since going to see her and it has made me much more confident within myself too!”

TOWNELEY PARK

Rochdale, OL16 1XU FREE Totally baby friendly... with nice toilets (always a plus!) No dogs (although I’m sure my dog would love coming face to face with a dinosaur)

Burnley, BB11 3QZ - around 30 mins from Rochdale FREE Probably pram-able, but may be more comfortable in a carrier A lovely dog walk location

Burnley, BB11 3RQ - around 45 mins from Rochdale FREE - Just car parking (£1.50 all day) Good paths for the pram. A good place to bike or scoot (or even roller skate!) Dogs welcome in the park

Dippy the Diplodocus (of Natural History Museum fame) has been on a tour of the UK and has finally arrived here in the North West. He will be residing at Number One Riverside until 28th June and he is well worth a visit! He is HUGE! There are lots of other activities going on too, at the library, nearby Touchstones and around the town centre.

It is such an unusual (and musical) sculpture and offers views all over Burnley and surrounding areas. It is only a short walk from where you park to the “tree”, but you could easily do much longer walks in the area. We, however, continued onto Towneley Park for a gentler walk and a play.

Just a really lovely park, where we go sometimes for a change of scene from our local park. Home to Towneley Hall, a lovely Grade I listed building which sits at the top of the park.

BLACKSTONE EDGE

HOLLINGWORTH LAKE

WATERGROVE

Littleborough FREE A lot of the routes around Blackstone Edge are definitely not pram friendly but the path we like to take is. Our dog loves being let loose up there

Littleborough, OL15 0AZ FREE, except for parking (take coins!) and, in my case, ice cream(s) Pushing a pram around is totally do-able A perfect dog walk

Wardle, Rochdale, OL12 9PL FREE Although parts of this walk are do-able with a pram, in order to get all the way round you will need a carrier. Similarly, only parts of this walk are suitable for kids’ bikes (as there are a variety of terrains including cobbles and steps). A dog’s paradise (although watch out for deer!)

A great option for a Sunday stroll (followed by a Sunday lunch), offering amazing views over Rochdale. We park at the White House pub (OL15 0LG) and then walk a tiny bit further up the road and take the path on the left. This is part of the Pennine Way and is a flat, traffic-free path that runs quite a good distance before it turns into a less toddler/pram friendly path. If there is an occasion that we don’t have our dog with us, we almost definitely call into the White House. The chilli here is up there with one of my favourite meals.

The walk around the lake is so picturesque, but also only slightly more than 2 miles, so is perfect for adults and children alike. There is also a playground and a cafe along the route to keep them happy! In the summer it is almost like a coastal resort, with access to the water, an amusement arcade and a fish & chip shop. There are numerous eateries to choose from - the burgers and salt & pepper chips at The Olive and Pickle being a firm favourite of ours (and they let well-behaved dogs in), The Wine Press for a nice dessert (or even a glass of prosecco) and The Beach (which sells bargain food and is dog-friendly).

A bit further out from Littleborough is what has been dubbed Britain’s Highest Beach. In reality it’s a small reservoir on top of a hill with a little patch of sand! Nonetheless... it is divine. When we went up it was a very warm day, but we went in the evening (otherwise I imagine it would be far too cramped). However, the views will be the same even in the cold, you just wouldn’t want to paddle!

We love to wander through Hardcastle Crags or the “deep dark wood” as our boy calls it. It is somewhere a bit different to our usual lake and reservoir walks and the stepping stones are a novelty! In the school holidays there are often extra activities for the kids to do, such as trails, building dens and drawing with charcoal.

Walsden, OL14 7TJ - 40 minutes from Manchester Free (or very reasonable prices for food and activities) Totally pram friendly and accessible baby change facilities Dogs allowed if carried or pushed in a trolley given my pug is obese, I opt for the trolley)

If you fancy a walk in Rochdale, but perhaps somewhere quieter than Hollingworth Lake, try Watergrove Reservoir, situated at the top of Wardle Village. It has a much more rural feel than Hollingworth Lake, partly because there are no facilities, and offers spectacular views. Another plus is that there is a large free car park.

I actually cannot get enough of Gordon Riggs! It boasts two delicious eateries, a craft area, regular activities such as treasure hunts and a play area. Watch out for special, seasonal activities- such as the inside ‘beach’ in the summer and Easter bunny breakfasts. 25

food & drink Style's handy 8-page pull-out guide, includes recipes from top Rochdale chefs, restaurant reviews and the best places to drink and dine in the local area. Rochdale really has something for everyone, with award winning pubs, unique bars and beautiful restaurants. The town boasts a wide variety of exciting food and drink outlets, all within a short walk of one another, and a quick drive or taxi ride home. Bombay Brew, The Pint Pot, Treehouse bar, Mannerist and Garden are just some of the latest bars and eateries to open in the heart of the town centre, with more new establishments soon to be announced. 2020 is already proving an exciting year for the town and we encourage everyone to drink and dine locally. Independent businesses greatly value your support and with so much choice on offer, we are certain you'll discover your new favourite bar, pub or eatery right here on your doorstep.

REVIEW: BOMBAY BREW - THE ROCHDALE CURRY REVOLUTION Blistering out of the gate last December, Bombay Brew, the latest venture from northern powerhouse Ben Boothman and team, has quickly established itself as a town centre hotspot.

Ditching the tired old format in favour of informal small plates, arriving at an incredible pace as each dish is fired out of Bombay’s bustling kitchen the second it is ready. This is serious, roll up your sleeves and get involved food, as it should be.

The former Wellington pub has been given a new lease of life, transformed into a trendy Indian street food emporium while generously keeping enough of the original features to keep that homely pub feel to the bar area. The bar itself lends a touch of the exotic to humdrum beer choices; tropical fruit IPAs and mango ciders sit alongside traditional hand pulled ales - it’s a tightrope walk Bombay Brew takes in its stride, balancing punk ideas and old school values all to a thumping bhangra soundtrack. Where the northern curry house really sets up it’s stall though, is the food. And boy does it deliver.

chaat. Vegan options make up a sizeable chunk of the constantly evolving menu and the teams, both front and back of house, clearly know their stuff. This isn’t new age ‘fusion food’ this is a deliberate collision course, taking dishes you know and love and treating them to an extreme makeover with fantastic results.

Big on flavour, freshness and colour, the food here ranks world famous curry aficionado Misty Ricardo as a fan, even contributing a few dishes of his own to the second run of this energetic restaurant’s incredible menu.

Bombay is the jewel in the crown of Ben Boothman’s town centre revolution and looks to have a bright future ahead of it! Call 01706 869502 or book online at www.bombaybrew.co.uk 1 Drake St, Rochdale OL16 1RE

THE ‘DON’T PANIC’ GUIDE TO COOKING ALMOST EVERY TYPE OF SEAFOOD. Tom McNeeney, head chef at The Oxford Pub, shares his latest cookery masterclass. Catch Tom's live demonstration at this year's Rochdale Food & Drink Festival - Saturday 4th April. I absolutely love seafood. I can’t get enough of the stuff but I’ve noticed in my 14 years of cooking that nothing brings people more fear in the kitchen than cooking anything out of the sea. It brings even the most competent home cook out in hot flushes! So I’ve teamed up with my mate Dan from Dan’s Fishop to bring you a fool proof guide to cooking seafood. My first bit of advice seems a bit obvious, but get yourself to a proper fishmonger like Dan, anyone who can debone and descale your fish, clean up your creepy shellfish and give you a little friendly advice is going to save you a mountain of hassle straight out of the gate. Prepping fish can be a massive ordeal so, let someone do it for you. The second is this, buy yourself a good, non-stick pan. Every chef in the world knows how important getting that crispy skin on top of your fish is and the best way to do that is not to leave it stuck to your pan. 30

food & drink

Flaky Fish: When we say flaky here, we’re talking big thick pieces of fish that, once you’ve cooked it, you can flake it apart with a fork. So, salmon, cod loin, hake, halibut, monkfish, red snapper. You’re after a chunk of fish that’s about two inches thick, and just like cooking meat you want to take it out of the fridge about twenty minutes before you cook it. Whack your pan on the heat, we’re talking hot. Once your pan is hot, add a little oil followed by your fish, skin side down if it has it. Using the back of a spoon keep a little pressure on the fish because the skin is going to try and curl. After about three minutes carefully flip the fish, throw in a knob of butter and squeeze in some lemon. Use the spoon to baste the fish as it cooks for another two minutes or so. Lift it out of the pan as delicately as you can. Congrats, you’ve mastered it.

Big Meaty Fish: So this one couldn’t be easier, tuna steaks and swordfish, my absolute favourites. I ask Dan for steaks about an inch thick - you could go thicker and serve your tuna rare, but let’s walk before we run. Get your steaks out of the fridge about twenty minutes ahead, get a griddle pan on a high heat. Rub the steaks all over with olive oil and give them a proper seasoning. Lay them in the pan, give them two minutes then flip over, two more minutes and lift them out. Outrageously simple.

Fillets of Fish: So when it comes to seabass, mackerel, red mullet, any skin on fillet of fish, follow the method for flaky fish but cut the cooking time down by a little, two minutes on the skin side, followed by one and a half on the other should do nicely. If you’re using sole, same again, but dust it with a little seasoned flour. I don’t know why. If anyone knows please write in.

King Prawns: So there’s a load of different ways to cook king prawns but our Dan does some enormous ones that you can cook like little lobsters and they’re fantastic. I lay them on their backs and using a sharp knife (sorry if you’re squeamish) put the point straight through the head and bring the knife down though the body. There’s going to be some nasty green stuff in the head and a big black veiny looking thing running along the back. Don’t think about them too much, just get rid. Turn your grill up pretty high, lay the prawns out flesh side up on a baking tray, season like crazy and give them a little dash of olive oil. Once the grill is properly hot, throw the prawns in and give them two and a bit minutes. Take them out, lay them out on a plate, squeeze over some lemon, go full Jamie and chuck some chopped parsley on there. Incredible.

Scallops: Scallops freak everyone out, so ask your fishmonger to clean them out and save yourself a little stress. Ask for the shells. Now, again, you want your grill on high, lay your scallops, each in their shells, on a baking tray, season them all over. Now mix a little softened butter with some chopped garlic and some chopped parsley, spoon a heaped teaspoon’s worth on each scallop then, once the grill is properly hot, lash them in for about five minutes. Could not be easier.

EASTER BUNNY BREAD Serves 6 Ingredients: 500g strong bread flour 3 teaspoons dried yeast 3 teaspoons salt 375ml water 2 tablespoons olive oil Extra flour for dusting 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons caster sugar 200g marzipan Method: Place the flour, yeast and salt in a mixer bowl with a dough hook, add the water and oil and put on a medium speed for approximately 5 minutes until the dough is well combined and kneaded.

Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel and leave in a warm place for an hour to prove. After an hour, tip back onto the work surface, dusting with more flour to prevent it sticking and knock back (also known as ‘punching down’ the dough to get the air out of it). Divide into 6, knead each one briefly then place into lightly oiled round tins and place on a tray. Cover with a cloth and leave again for one hour until lightly risen. Remove the cloth and drizzle with olive oil. Bake in a hot oven at 180C for 8 minutes, open oven door then shower with sugar and return to the oven for a further 8 minutes. Remove from oven – leave to cool then garnish with marzipan and currants to resemble an Easter Bunny.

Place onto a lightly dusted work surface and knead for about 2 minutes until smooth.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Stir the egg yolks into the melted chocolate, then add the Grand Marnier cream and stir well. Mix half of the whisked egg whites into the chocolate mixture, then carefully fold in the remainder. Place in fridge until you make up your tortes. Take 10 metal mousse rings and place a sheet of sponge in the base of each one. Drizzle over some additional Grand Marnier then spoon over the chocolate torte mix – level off with a palette knife. Place in fridge to firm. When ready to serve – unmould the mousses from the ring with the help of a blow torch or warm damp cloth. Place straight on the plate and top with Brandy snap shards, yoghurt ice cream, citrus fruits, and lemon balm.

weddings

Picture-perfect weddings on a budget... According to The National Wedding Survey 2019, the average cost of a UK wedding now weighs in at a jaw-dropping £31,974, in contrast to £20,799 back in 2014, with many couples saying that they felt 'under pressure' to have an Instagram-worthy wedding. We’ve put together a few money saving tips and ideas, which will hopefully help you to plan your big day for less, without compromising on those picture-perfect moments. MAKE THE MOST OF TALENTED FRIENDS Do you have a friend who is an amazing guitarist? Perhaps an aunt who bakes cakes? A grandad with a classic car? A friend who would make a great make up artist? Has your mum always fancied herself as a florist? You get the idea! Ask if people would be happy to lend a hand in lieu of a wedding gift or at ‘mate’s rates’! SHOP LOCALLY Keep an eye out for local sales and special offers. Independent retailers and service providers greatly value your support and will often go that extra mile to make sure you have the perfect wedding day.

PICK SEASONAL BLOOMS Flowers will be significantly cheaper if they are in season. It’s also becoming popular for bridesmaids to wear wrist corsages, which often work out cheaper than bridesmaid bouquets. D.I.Y Save a fortune by making your own invitations, decorations and favours. Handmade is very much the trend these days. We love Hobby Craft’s ideas library (hobbycraft.co.uk), which has hundreds of DIY craft ideas and step-by-step guides. Pinterest is another fantastic and easy-to-use website and app for DIY inspiration and mood boards.

DON'T GET MARRIED ON A SATURDAY Most wedding venues and even some wedding suppliers will give you a generous discount if you get married mid-week or avoid peak times of year and special holidays. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Keep in mind that you don’t need to stick to convention or have everything you’re told you need. Do things a little differently… have a buffet or barbeque instead of a sit-down meal or make a playlist of your favourite songs instead of booking a band or DJ.

history

The Victorians - full of resolute endeavour The Victorian era, considered to be the beginnings of the modern world, spanned the years from 1837 until 1901. Town population grew to provide the workforce needed for the many mills and factories, and so giving us the ‘working week’ as we know it. Rochdale became a thriving, prosperous town, providing goods and generating income for the British economy. Buildings, artefacts and innovations of the period are part of our town today with many still in use after over 150 years, including the much-admired Town Hall which was competed in 1871, though with the surrounding area considered to be ‘dingy and unsavoury’, the 70 foot-wide Esplanade was completed that same year to cover the unsightly river and improve the aspect of the Town Hall. Over the next 30 years roads in and around the town centre were widened and re-surfaced particularly the area around the Butts and Yorkshire St. Railways were the big innovation of the era, with a flurry of growth around 1840, known as ‘Railway Mania’. Rochdale’s current railway station dates from 1889, replacing one of 1839. There were once eight platforms to serve many outlying areas, operational right up until closure in the 1960s. Railways were primarily used to transport goods but quickly found favour with the public. Passenger trade grew, though initially carriages were little more than cattle trucks with no thought for

44

comfort or safety or even a roof. By the late 1800s many mill workers were grateful for trains which transported them to seaside locations, such as Blackpool, for Wakes holidays and day trips. A railway station had previously been planned for the town as early as 1830 though one and half miles outside the centre, which would have been very inconvenient! It is a little macabre to consider the necessary burial needs of the deceased; people worked long, hard hours and housing was often unsanitary and crowded. Disease such as cholera, typhoid and respiratory problems were rife. Life expectancy was low, around 30 years old for adults with child mortality very high. Poverty was a grim fact of life, workhouses at Spotland and Marland, though harsh, gave rudimentary assistance as a last resort. Marland also added some hospital facilities from 1886. Under these difficult circumstances church graveyards simply ran out of room and were often in a ‘loathsome’ state. Organised, council-run cemeteries were a much needed and welcome innovation. Rochdale Cemetery opened its ornate Rochdale-built gates in 1855 with a crowd of thousands to witness the occasion. The cemetery had a Norman Church-style chapel with the Roman Catholic and Non-Conformist chapels being added later. The cemetery and its splendid gates are independently Grade 2 listed.

www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

history The cemetery grounds are the resting place for many of the Pioneers whose graves have been refurbished and can be easily found, pinpointed by markers along the main path as part of a ‘Pioneers Walk’. The Pioneers had their first meeting in 1844, and, legally registered, they opened at 31 Toad Lane three months later to help poor people to buy affordable food though a similar, non-registered, enterprise set up in 1833 had failed. The Co-Operative Movement was to spread world-wide with the Rochdale initiative proving very influential.

The town’s police force dates from 1841 with headquarters at the junction of Yorkshire St. and Cheetham St, some early recruits proving, sadly, unworthy. The force steadily gained in stature and numbers from 1857, moving headquarters to the Town Hall in 1872. Then, as now, bad behaviour accompanying the consumption of alcohol was a significant problem. In 1870 there were 790 cases of drunkenness in the town resulting in many public houses being closed down or summonsed. The later decades of the Victorian era heralded many improvements to Rochdale life. Weights and Measures protected the public from fraud and unscrupulous food practices from 1878. Sanitation and sewage facilities improved from 1850 to the benefit of both health and environment. Gas arrived as early as 1844 and water supply transferred from private ownership to Rochdale Corporation from 1867. Horse drawn omnibuses were replaced by steam-powered trams in 1883, themselves replaced by electric trams around 1900. The Victorian era created much wealth for some and innovations to benefit many. There were also problems with poverty, poor health and social issues, and in the spirit of the age, these were seen as problems to be resolved, Victorians being resolute innovators and pioneers.

The Victorians had a great appetite for selfimprovement and education. Rochdale’s free public library opened in 1884, the building’s Gothic style complementing the nearby Town Hall. Previously books could be borrowed on a modest subscription from the original Town Hall tower which was destroyed by fire including the entire collection of books.

Touchstones has superb artefacts of the era on display and a wonderful reference library to research further Rochdale history whilst many buildings of that time, including Toad Lane Co-op, can be enjoyed to reflect upon the legacy of an industrious generation.

Paul Brady

Rochdale Observer owner, W.A. Scott had backed the initiative of a free library and attended its opening as did Rochdale-born writer and poet, Edwin Waugh. Interestingly, the Pioneers opposed the idea as they had been selling books in order to raise funds for Toad Lane. Electric lighting was added to the library in 1896, no doubt to the great delight of staff and users. We can imagine people being eager to obtain the contemporary works of Charles Dickens, the novels of Northern mill life by Elizabeth Gaskell or the controversial writings of Darwin. Plans were made for the extension of an art gallery and museum in 1898 which was to eventually come to fruition courtesy of funds acquired in 1901; added ornamental panels representing ‘Science, Art and Literature’ still adorn the building. Library reading may have included the Rochdale Observer, founded in 1856 and now the only survivor from several newspapers that served the area including the Spectator in 1844, Rochdale Pilot and Reporter in 1847 along with the Rochdale Sentinel in 1853. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

beauty

B E A U T Y: s p r i n g c l e a n y o u r r e g i m e Spring is in the air and it’s the perfect time to spring clean your beauty regime. When you look in the mirror what do you see? The harsh winter weather and central heated havens we create over the cold dark months take their toll on our skin. Our skin can become dry and flaky, pink and sensitive and almost always dehydrated. Spring is the perfect time to freshen things up. Small changes such as introducing an exfoliation into your weekly skincare routine can really brighten smooth and prepare the skin to absorb your skincare better. There are many exfoliators on the market, from peels to scrubs. I would recommend something gentle to start with, especially if you have sensitive skin. Oily skins, male or more mature skins could benefit from a peel, such as a mild salicylic acid peel. In addition to exfoliation, the introduction of a serum can really boost your skin’s hydration, making winter skin more plump and dewy. Serums are to be used on cleansed skin under your chosen moisturiser. If you are unsure of the correct serum to suit your skin, always consult a professional therapist - don’t just follow market trends as these might not be the best for you. Once you have addressed the skin you can now paint your canvas, making the most of your natural facial features. As with last season, it’s all about the brows. Brow lamination is huge for all ages and available for both men and women. Daisy Moore, a therapist at The Retreat explains the trend: “One of the most popular looks for brow lamination would be the brushed up fluffy look. A brushed up, fluffy brow can create the illusion that the eye has been lifted, giving a more youthful look. Your therapist will always discuss which shape and look you would like before the brows are completely set into shape. Brow lamination is perfect for unruly, flat or downwards growing brows as you can ultimately change the direction of hair growth to create a more uniform shape”. Once we’ve perfected the brows, consider enhancing your lashes - whether you have natural lashes or you need a little assistance in that area, lashes can be conditioned, nourished, tinted, lifted or extended depending on your preference, and men can have these treatments too. The most popular male lash treatment would be a lash tint; this process dyes the lashes from root to tip in either a natural colour to suit hair and skin tone or in a darker black to make the eyes more inviting - think Adam Levine, Maroon 5. For women, the options are vast, with the most popular options being LvL Lash lift to lift the lashes and set them in place before tinting them to give the illusion of longer, thicker lifted lashes – this process takes 45 minutes and the results last 6-8 weeks. If your natural lashes need a little more help, then extensions can be applied to the lashes individually to make each of your lashes longer and thicker. Last, but by no means least – lips! Spring time is the perfect time to start nourishing those lips after the harsh cold and central heating, and prepare them for the summer months. Unnourished lips whether your male or female can look unsightly and also lead to premature ageing and fine lines and wrinkles can set in. Invest in a good quality lip treatment to apply daily or throughout the day as needed (I would recommend PAYOT lip balm in a stick £8.00 or Nutricia lip balm £16) to really make your lips speak for themselves. history

ERIC CLAPTON - LIVE IN ROCHDALE As virtuoso blues guitarist, Eric Clapton, celebrates his 75th birthday this year, there is a good chance that some Style readers enjoying their retirement - witnessed Eric playing live in Rochdale way back in 1965.

Names such as The Merseybeats, The Big Three and The Mojos came over from Liverpool and there were groups from London including Alexis Korner's Blue Incorporated, The Pretty Things and Downliners Sect.

Eric Clapton was born on 1945, in Ripley, in the county of Surrey and was largely raised by his grandmother. He was given his first guitar at the age of 14. Eric went to art college in Kingston-onThames studying stained glass design. After brief stints with The Roosters and Casey Jones & The Engineers, Clapton's break came when he joined The Yardbirds in late 1963. The Yardbirds were signed to EMI's Columbia label and released their debut album, Five Live Yardbirds in December 1964.

There had been an All Night event at the Cubiklub (from 7pm to 7am) on Easter Saturday on April 17th 1965 with a wide range of acts encompassing folk, R&B and even poetry and humour. Two weeks later, on 1st May, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers appeared in Rochdale.

Eric left the Yardbirds in March 1965, opposing the band's move from R&B to pop. Within a month, he was invited to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers as their new lead guitarist. John Mayall was one of the top names in British blues at the time. The band's new line-up played mainly club dates throughout April and Eric's reputation for both his technique and his authenticity rapidly grew. In a previous Style article, I told the story of The Rolling Stones' “non-appearance” at the Cubiklub in April 1964, when a riot stopped them appearing. Over the next twelve months, however, the club - sited very near to where Mecca Bingo now stands - had established itself as an important and successful venue.

This second All Nighter at the Cubiklub also started at 7pm and went on for twelve hours until 7am on Sunday morning. This was quite a common occurrence in those days. Sometimes, performers even played at two venues on the same night! For the first time Eric Clapton was billed separately after bandleader John Mayall's name. He was wrongly described as “ex-Yardbirds singer” and given the nickname “Slow Hand”. The latter moniker stuck with Eric; it was a reference to the slow handclapping that impatient British audiences do at concerts. In his case, it was because Eric took so long to change a broken guitar string. The other bill toppers were The Country Gents making a return appearance to the club. History has not been kind to this latter act and not much more has been heard about them. There were literally thousands of pop and R&B groups in England in the mid 1960's. Very few made a decent living out of it. Apparently, the Bluesbreakers did not much like playing in the Manchester area; Eric told a biographer: "If we did a gig in Manchester where (Mayall's) parents lived, he'd go and stay the night at his mum's and we'd have to sleep in a van. He didn't get you a hotel or anything.” John Mayall was a shrewd operator; allegedly, he would count the number of fans as they went into a venue to ensure that he received the correct percentage of the ticket sales! Within a year, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers recorded what has been called in the ultimate British blues album. In the Decca recording studio in north west London, the combination of Eric's Gibson Les Paul guitar and Marshall amplifier was simply revolutionary. Eric insisted on playing his electric guitar at full volume, as if he was playing

history live. The album, Blues Breaker John Mayall With Eric Clapton was released in July 1966 and reached Number 6 in the British album charts. The album had a distinctive front cover with Eric reading a copy of the Beano comic, alongside his bandmates. The album is still available on CD or download. Many Style readers will use streaming services and the album is available there, also. The opening track, a version of Albert King's 'All You Love' is extraordinary, even after over half a century. The leap in Eric's guitar solo from the minor key to major is still breathtaking. No wonder this track has been streamed on Spotify an amazing ten million times. A mix of blues covers and original John Mayall compositions, the whole album is worth hearing, possessing a rawness and intensity that few white blues bands ever achieve. On track after track, Eric's guitar riffs and solos are simply awesome.

Eric Clapton has recorded over 30 solo albums and sold millions of records, constantly changing his repertoire and approach. His songs such as Layla, Wonderful Night and Tears In Heaven are heard everywhere. Blues musicians were traditionally expected to “pay their dues” and Eric Clapton certainly did. Were you there at the Cubiklub on May Day 1965? Please email us at features@rochdalestyle.com to share your memories.

Richard Lysons Thanks to Rochdale Local Studies and Christopher Hjort.

Eric did not stay much longer with John Mayall. He had met two other virtuoso musicians: drummer Ginger Baker and bass player/vocalist Jack Bruce. Both Bruce and Baker had originally played in jazz bands. Their name, Cream, alluded to the fact that each musician was the cream of the crop on their respective instruments. Despite their origins in the blues and jazz world, Cream are seen as a pop band in many ways. Singles such as I Feel Free, Sunshine Of Your Love and Badge and albums such as Disraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire came along and were huge sellers. The band gained a reputation for their extraordinary ability to improvise, almost as if they were a jazz band. They were particularly popular in the USA. But even Cream did not last long, either. After constant touring and recording for two hectic years by November 1968 the band played their final concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall. All three musicians succumbed to heavy drug use. Later, Eric formed Blind Faith with Ginger Baker, but this band also soon split up. After this Eric became a solo artist and has remained so ever since. What about the musicians who played the Cubiklub over half a century ago? John Mayall is an amazing 86 years old and still tours and records. Bass player John McVie is the “Mac” in Fleetwood Mac and is still with them after half a century. Drummer Hughie Flint was part of McGuinness Flint and The Blues Band for many years, later working as a porter at an Oxford College! He is now retired and celebrating his 80th birthday this year. www.issuu.com/stylemagazine

Indulgent relaxation at Rena Spa REVIEW: Rena Spa at the Midland If you’re looking for the perfect place to unwind, Rena Spa at the Midland feels a million miles away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Situated at the historic Midland Hotel, in Manchester, the luxury multi award winning spa offers guests an opulent space to unwind and discover ‘The Art of Relaxation' and was crowned ‘Best Luxury Urban Escape' in Northern Europe at the prestigious World Luxury Spa Awards 2019. From first stepping foot in this elegant spa, my guest and I were hit with the wonderful fragrance of luxury spa products and greeted by the friendly spa team. The spa is blissfully quiet; you almost forget you're in the middle of a busy city centre. My guest and I were delighted to experience the Indulgence Spa Day (priced at £99pp from Monday to Thursday and £119pp from Friday to Sunday). This includes a 50 minute treatment of your choice, a glass of Champagne, a light lunch or afternoon tea and a £10 voucher to spend on spa products. The spa offer many luxury treatments; we chose the Divine Body Massage and Hot Stone Massage. The highly experienced therapists helped ease all muscle tension, providing a

deeply restful and stress-relieving experience. The spa includes a Rasul mud chamber, Alder wood sauna with Himalayan salt block wall, aromatherapy steam room with sea air atmosphere to help clear the senses, and invigorating shower experiences such as Caribbean Storm and Arctic Rain... if you're brave enough! There’s also the heated relaxation pool, with swan neck fountain to help ease neck and shoulder tension. Or you can while away the hours in your fluffy white robe and slippers, in the blissful sleep chambers - complete with hanging pod cocoons and sound-cancelling egg chairs. The perfect place to lose track of time. My guest and I chose a nutritious platter for our lunch in the spa cafe. Choices included the Superfoods, Herbivorous or High Protein platter. There's also a variety of delectable sandwiches on offer, or for a more indulgent option, there's also the famous Taster of Afternoon Tea. SINGING JEWELLER, JOHN ALEXANDER IS ROCHDALE'S CHARITY CHAMPION Rochdale's very own singing jeweller, John Alexander, recently met with Style Magazine competition winners, Karen and Angus Robinson (pictured below), to present them with their ÂŁ1000 voucher from J&D Alexander on The Walk. This is just one of many prizes given away by John, to local people, charities and organisations, amounting to tens of thousands of pounds. John's singing and endless contributions have helped a wide range of charities throughout the Rochdale borough over the years, particularly Springhill Hospice, Moorland Children's Home, Rochdale Foodbank, and the Samantha Smith Appeal, of which he was a great supporter. John, who has owned the shop since 2002, and is also an active member of Rochdale District Freemasons, was named Man of Rochdale in 2018 due to his generosity and fundraising efforts.

The one thing Springhill Hospice fundraisers have in common is the desire to give something back. In the case of Chantelle Thornton, and her family and friends, they not only wanted to say ‘thank you’ but also wanted to help ensure that Springhill’s doctors and nurses could continue their care for others.

WOMEN OF ROCHDALE 2020

Last year, the hospice cared for Chantelle’s husband, Tom Thornton, who tragically lost his life to cancer just weeks after the birth of their son Maxwell. One year on and Chantelle, along with ‘Team Tom’, have pledged their support to

Springhill Hospice’s annual Women of Rochdale Luncheon returns on the 24th April at Rochdale Town Hall. Springhill Hospice are delighted to announce that this year’s special guest is Rochdale actress and singer, Sue Devaney. Sue will be telling tales of her time in showbiz and of course performing a song or two. Guests attending the event are treated to entertainment, raffles and prize draws, along with a delicious threecourse meal and of course the naming of The Woman of Rochdale 2020. Last year saw Carole Kelly, an inspiring mother of three, become Rochdale’s 28th Woman of Rochdale. Carole founded the charity Jolly Josh in memory of her son, Josh. She was inspired to establish the charity after feeling there was a gap in the system that enable families of disabled children and children with special needs to connect with one another. Jolly Josh has since gone on to bring families together, share experiences, exchange information and eliminate isolation. INAUGURAL STARLIGHT BALL SET TO LIGHT UP ROCHDALE TOWN HALL IN SUPPORT OF SPRINGHILL HOSPICE

Rochdale Town Hall is set to host the first ever ‘Starlight Ball’, a glamourous black-tie event which aims to raise funds for Springhill Hospice. Taking place on May 16th 2020, the Starlight Ball will light up the town with an evening packed full of sparkling entertainment from local singers and musicians, plus silent auctions, raffles and games to raise money for the Rochdale-based charity. It is hoped that over 200 people from in and around the area will come together for the event, which is being organised by a committee of businesses from across the Rochdale Borough. Springhill Hospice provides a range of specialist palliative care services to people in the Rochdale area from diagnosis to end-of-life. Financial support is extremely important to the hospice, which relies on donations to raise in excess of £3.2m every year – or £8928 per day – to provide its vital services. David Gilbertson, a spokesperson for the committee organising the ball and CEO of Rochdale-based company Wireless CCTV, said “through a series of visits to the Hospice, learning about the work they do and experiencing how it touches the lives of so many people in the area, myself and others felt a huge drive to something special to help raise funds". "The support we have received so far from other businesses in the Rochdale community, and some from further afield, has been amazing. However, we are still appealing for sponsors to help cover the costs, and for donations to our silent auction and raffles. We would welcome any contributions no matter how large or small, just get in touch.” For more information on tickets, sponsorship packages or how to donate, please email contact@starlightball.co.uk or visit www.starlightball.co.uk

MARK'S CYCLE CHALLENGE AIMS TO RAISE THOUSANDS FOR TWO LOCAL CHARITIES Local businessman Mark Harris will be cycling to every one of Rochdale Hornets’ away games this season to raise money for two local charities.

Talking about his chosen charities, Mark explained: “The Hornets Sporting Foundation was a no-brainer really, with my love and passion for the team. The work the foundation does for the community throughout the borough is fantastic."

Mark, who is director of AAA Pest Control Services in Littleborough, will cycle hundreds of miles over the season and hopes to raise a total of £7,500 for the Hornets Sporting Foundation, which aims to get people playing rugby league more often, and Jolly Josh, an inclusive toddler group for all the family.

Jolly Josh was started in September 2017 by Carole and James Kelly, of Wardle, after discovering there were no groups for young disabled children in Rochdale. At the age of six months, their son Josh was confirmed to have ‘extensive brain damage’ due to the genetic condition Mitochondrial Disease.

Mark has sponsored Rochdale Hornets for nine years, coming into his 10th season, as well as sponsoring local teams within the borough.

The stay-and-play sessions were set up with the hope to bring families together, share experiences, and eliminate isolation, especially for children with disabilities and special needs throughout the borough. Sadly, Josh died on 27 August 2017, just one month before his legacy, Jolly Josh, was due to begin. Mark commented: “After listening to the story about Josh, I immediately decided I was going to attempt to raise funds for them. I am hoping this season-long challenge will raise plenty of money towards the day centre they are constructing on Queensway.” The centre for Jolly Josh will be fully accessible and inclusive, at an estimated cost of around £100,000. Mark’s first ride will be to Workington on the weekend of 21 and 22 March - 140 miles away. His furthest ride will take him to South Wales, just under 250 miles away.
