the agenda Welcome to the Spring 2017 issue of Style Manitoba! There’s a lot going on around the province this season, and we’ve tried to capture as much of that as possible within our new edition. As always, we kick off the new publishing year with plenty of home and landscape design coverage to coincide with major events in those industries, and to offer fresh ideas befitting the season to consumers. First up is the Spring 2017 Parade of Homes, on from March 4-26 in a wide range of locations. At this year’s event, 132 properties designed and constructed by 37 builders will be showcased in 33 different neighbourhoods within Winnipeg and beyond. Welcome to

the Neighbourhood offers a sampling of these exceptional builder showhomes and condo designs, along with coverage on the hottest housing developments. Don’t miss out on the Spring Parade - there’s something here for everyone! (Check www.homebuilders.mb.ca for details.) For our cover story - Masters of Modern Luxury - Todd Lewys shares his insights on the meticulous custom building process of a leading local company that has rightly garnered distinction as one of Manitoba’s top tier builders. Down to the tiniest details, this homebuilder leaves no stone unturned where superior design, high quality products and stringent building practices are concerned. After a long, cold winter, there’s nothing more appealing to Manitobans than the thought of spending time outdoors once the warm weather hits. We appreciate spring and summer more than most Canadians, which is why so many homeowners here today strive to make the most of their outdoor spaces. t’s something that everyone who tours a Huntington home senses almost immediately: an energy, style and flow that’s unlike any other home. “When people come to have a look at our showhome at 141 Rose Lake Court in Bridgwater Trails, they tour the entire home to take it all in,” says Huntington Homes’ frontman, Rob Swan. “After, they will often sit down in the great room for five to 10 minutes - or more - to soak up that energy. One recent visitor to the home said, ‘the home just felt so good; it had a positive energy about it.’” Swan suggests the home’s positive energy tends to prompt repeat visits. “We’ve surmised people are simply soaking in the home’s energy. Our sales representatives (Jason Topnik and Pearl Paradise) tell me

“All Huntington homes have a really nice flow that starts with being invited in by a generous, highly functional and striking entrance,” Topnik said. “You can turn left down the stairs to the walkout lower level or right to the bedroom wing – or head straight into the great room. Most people tend to be drawn into that area because it’s just so welcoming, and has such a rich, calming feel.”

“We’ve paid meticulous attention to detail since day one. We consistently work with the same trades and have used many of them from the day we built our first home. That ensures the highest possible level of quality and consistency from home to home.”

Topnik says that while Huntington’s designs – which feature floor plans that are open, yet contain three distinct spaces (kitchen, dining

that many people come back repeatedly, with some staying for an hour or more to enjoy its calming, yet energizing feel.” Topnik agrees that Swan’s comment is a perfect summation of what a Huntington-designed home is all about.

“Flow from room to room is exceptional, and each room is the perfect size,” states Topnik. “There’s a style, flow and energy about every home that makes each one a design that will stand the test of time in every respect.”

To further elevate that consistency, Huntington employs a proven building system (its proprietary GPS, or Guidance-Priority-Synergy System) to get every detail of a build right, starting with a customer’s exact preferences. SPRING 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 7

5Rift oak cabinetry by DLUX Design & Company, two-tone quartz countertops and wide-plank, engineered hardwoods from Curtis Carpets – along with mod pendant light fixtures by Robinson lighting – give the kitchen a comfortable, contemporary feel.

“Even before we begin designing a home for clients, we spend countless hours researching exactly what each client’s needs, wants and desires are,” he explains. “Then, only when that research is finished to a point where we have complete insight into their needs, do we begin designing the home.” From there, Huntington’s sales reps and in-house design team utilize the most advanced CAD (Computer Aided Design) technology and work closely with clients on the design within the GPS System’s proven parameters. “We created our GPS System to serve two purposes. First, it was designed to remove stress from the building process, making it enjoyable and fun for our clients by keeping them in the loop at every stage of the build,” explains Swan. Pearl Paradise states that people truly appreciate this leave-no-stone-unturned approach to building their home.

“The comments we hear from clients on a regular basis are that Huntington’s building system is on a whole different level with its exceptional attention to detail,” she says. “They also really appreciate the fact that the person who sells them the home is the one that works with them from start to finish. That personal touch makes a huge difference in their experience.” At the same time, the GPS System serves to keep all the different aspects of a build on track, from budget through to making sure the minute but meaningful design details clients ask for are incorporated into a home’s design. “Our clients have high expectations, as do we,” shares Swan. “They want only the best. With that in mind, our attention to detail, building system and construction specifications are second-to-none.” Ah, yes - Huntington Homes’ legendary construction specifications. Because those specifications go above and beyond typical custom builders’ building specifications in over 150 areas, they’re unmatched by any other builder in the Manitoba marketplace. “There’s a reason why those specifications are so stringent,” says Swan. “We want every home we build to be as solid 30 or 40 years down SPRING 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 9

the line as the day it was built. Every detail in the home has been engineered, tried and tested extensively to ensure each home is of the highest possible quality now, and well into the future.” In short, nothing is left to chance in the construction of a Huntington home. All homes feature an engineered-piled foundation, steel beams, engineered floors and wood structural floors in the basement – features that combine with a host of many other design elements to create a rock-solid home. “Every home is designed to be as bulletproof as possible, to stand the test of time,” Swan states. “It needs to be this way, as Winnipeg has the largest temperature and humidity fluctuations, coupled with the greatest soil expansion and contraction, of any city in the world.” This same meticulous approach is then applied to the design of the homes. “We go to incredible lengths to contemplate what every space within a client’s home will look and feel like. Taking that approach enables us to custom-tailor each room of the home for each client.” That approach pays off in two ways. First, function and flow will be impeccable. Second, because each detail in every room is considered, each space will perform exactly the way the homeowner wants it to.

5A huge walk-in shower featuring a tempered glass surround by Fort Rouge Glass and shower doors by Shodor is located on the opposite side of the twosided vanity in rich rift oak by DLUX Design & Company.

“The rest is finishing it to the client’s exact decorating tastes,” Swan notes. More than any other builder, Huntington Homes customizes a home to every client’s need and desire.

5Light taupe tile flooring sourced from Curtis Carpets and a stand-alone soaker tub from Robinson Bath give the elegant ensuite a luxurious, spa-like feel.

Why is that? “Two reasons,” answers Swan. “First, our clients intend to live in their homes for a long time, so it’s critically important that a home is beautiful, functional and built to last. It’s important that we design it not only SPRING 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 11

contemplating their needs today, but also what they will be in the future.” The second reason is equally as important. “Attention to detail, exceptional execution and uncompromising quality make for a home that’s a sound long-term investment. Building a home to the highest possible standard in every area not only protects our client’s investment, but also ensures they’ll enjoy living in the home for as long as they own it. We still have clients living in homes we built for them almost 30 years ago – so much for repeat business,” laughs Swan. “That said, we rely on the referrals of satisfied clients for most of our business today.” There’s no arguing that Huntington’s detailoriented approach works, as they are the undisputed Masters of Modern Luxury. Over the span of nearly 30 years, they’ve won countless Parade of Homes awards, and are widely regarded as the benchmark in Manitoba’s homebuilding industry. They’ve been featured in many Canadian and American publications – Canadian Home Builder, Custom Builder and TRENDS, to name just a few. “Everything we do is geared towards creating custom-tailored homes that are designed to meet the demands of day-to-day, real living in every possible way,” says Swan. “We’re able to do that better than any other builder because

we spend more time researching what a client’s exact needs and wants are – and have building systems in place that keep everything on track, allowing us to build a home that’s a tailored fit for our client every time.” In other words, when a client comes home, they truly are home, in every possible sense of the word. Building or renovating? Save over $14,000 with natural gas. Heating your home and water account for 75 per cent of your energy bill, so you’ll want a heating system that gives you the best value over its lifespan. Some types of heating systems cost less up front, but will actually cost more to run each year. It’s important to consider both the purchase price and the operating cost when choosing a heating system for your home.

Know before you buy. Discuss your options with your home builder or contractor. Here are some important questions to ask: • What type of heating systems are available now? • How much will each cost to operate? • What are the annual maintenance requirements and cost to maintain the system? • How energy efficient is it? • Will an electrical upgrade be required?

Replacing an existing heating system? Manitoba Hydro can help. We offer a variety of financing options that can help spread the cost of buying a new furnace or water heater over time. Power Smart* Pay As You Save (PAYS) financing uses the money you save on energy to pay for your new heating system. The Power Smart Residential Loan offers convenient financing with various loan terms. The Power Smart Affordable Energy Program helps qualifying homeowners make their home more energy efficient with free insulation and a new high efficiency natural gas furnace for only $9.50 per month for five years.* *This offer is subject to change at anytime. 14 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2017

Ten Years Strong B Y K E L LY G R AY P H O T O G R A P H Y: J A I M I E R E I M E R It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since local family-owned Nott Autocorp opened its doors and began redefining Winnipeg’s car buying experience. Now, celebrating a decade as an innovative force in the auto industry, Nott is pushing ahead with its characteristic authentic organic growth that will allow them to continue walking the talk. “Our process has been to take one step at a time, and life always guides us to the optimum evolution of our business,” says Nott Autocorp founding President and one-time lot boy Trevor Nott, remarking that natural growth has been a hallmark of their success over the past 10 years. “In the beginning, I convinced my pregnant wife to sell our house in Westwood and move above the old dealership. We couldn’t afford two mortgages, so off we went with a $50,000 line of credit to buy our first cars. While fuelling up one day, we were able to hire a local Co-op kid as our first lot attendant to help us at the site off Lagimodière where we cut our teeth. Once business launched, we developed our wholesale custom order process mostly due to the fact we didn’t have the funds to have a large inventory,” says Trevor, noting that with custom orders becoming a major part of the business, they were able to import some of the nicest vehicles in Winnipeg. “During years three to six we were looking south to buy great cars and save our customers money, thanks to exchange rates. Then we would offer our clients guidance regarding the optimum time for us to buy cars back or sell them for retail on consignment, making a car purchase entirely worry free. We still offer those benefits and more, but with the current dollar trading lower against US currency, we now source 99 percent of our vehicles inside Canada.” With sales growing and an opportunity to obtain property at McGillivray and Waverley, the company moved to its current state-ofthe-art location just over two years ago. Now under one roof, Nott can feature as many as 40 cars inside and another 100+ outside. This means buyers don’t have to slog around on frozen parking lots in the winter where they watch salespeople chip ice off the windshield to show the car. At Nott’s new location, buyers can stroll in climate-controlled comfort at the 5.5-acre site that offers 29,000 sq. ft. of display and office space, plus a 6-bay service facility. Nott calls it VIP Auto Service because while their clients wait for vehicles to be serviced, they enjoy a customer lounge unlike any other.

In addition to the standard WiFi, TVs, and coffee (Nott has an actual beverage menu), there’s ping pong, billiards, automated full-body massage chairs, and of course, plenty of art to admire. Nott reports that sales have increased 20 percent since the move. “Privately owned consignment sales have become a huge part of our business now. Many of our luxury vehicles, sports cars and exotics are actually here on consignment. We’ve become the pre-owned luxury experts for the Prairies - people recognize our trusted brand and trust us with their highend vehicles.” Helping drive the company even farther forward is its online sales capability. “We advertise on 20 websites, and offer features like video walk-arounds and YouTube exposure. We also accept trades, we are agents for all the banks, and our financing specialists can tailor the right loan package to make a car purchase easy,” he states. “These are all advantages that we have over private individuals when selling cars. It’s very hard to sell a car privately, which is why we open our doors and welcome the public to consign their vehicles with us. We make it easy, and it will be easier yet when we launch our upcoming online consignment site where customers can load their cars online remotely

and take advantage of our exposure, then sign up once they see the level of interest in their car.” Today, Nott offers Manitobans leasing and financing for Teslas. Nott is also a nation-wide appraiser for Tesla Canada, a designation that demonstrates the respect the company has earned over the past decade. “This has allowed us to bid on and bring in not just Teslas, but other exclusive luxury vehicles that Tesla is taking on trade,” he says, adding that their experience and industry contacts within the luxury auto sector is such that Nott is often the first to be approached with unique car opportunities. “From the beginning we have operated authentically and intuitively from a position of ‘why not?’ If it seems like a good idea for all parties, we try it. A typical new-car franchise store is limited by the manufacturer’s direction, which guides how they market, display vehicles and process potential clients. But we see the auto sector as a market that is demanding change, and we are delivering,” explains Nott, suggesting that their go-with-the-flow unique approach has made them the success they are today. Their customers could not agree more. For more information on the Nott Autocorp experience, visit www.winnipegusedcars.com SPRING 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 17

What an incredibly cool home featured in the winter 2016 edition of Style! Loved the design and some of the furnishings, particularly that gorgeous dining room table. The windows and tall front door from Duxton really added a statement to the design. Trademark Homes gets top marks for this build. Jonathan Craig, Winnipeg My husband and I enjoy getting Style Manitoba and usually read it from cover to cover. The winter issue was great – we enjoyed the cover story on Sweet Alibi – a group we had the pleasure of seeing perform a while back at a fundraiser. We also really like reading about home designs. The home design by ADR Properties featured in the summer 2016 edition was lovely - this is a builder we had not previously been aware of. And then followed by another great Artista home design in the Fall 2016 edition. Style Manitoba has been an excellent resource for our home renovations and many other things. Keep it coming! Tara & Ryan Unger, Winnipeg The summer 2016 edition of Style Manitoba was of special interest to my colleagues and I, as we work in a downtown office amidst all the new construction. Nearly everyone at our firm read it, and we all agreed that Great Expectations was an excellent and informative editorial on all the new developments happening in Winnipeg’s downtown area. Kudos to Kelly Gray for sharing that wealth of information so intelligently with Style’s readers - it’s an exciting time ahead for Winnipeg! Daryn Wiebe, Winnipeg

I was so pleased to see Aleks Paunovic gracing the cover of a previous issue, and the black and white shot was such a slick look! Along with all the other good content, it’s wonderful to see a local publication profiling yet another successful Manitoban. Thank you for the excellent coverage. Rochelle Hornby, Winnipeg I read about Nott’s latest achievements in a back issue of Style with great interest – particularly the addition of Tesla electric cars to their already impressive offerings in the used luxury car market. That’s exactly what Wade Salchert has done in the former Gio’s bar on Smith Street; the place has never been more elevated. La Roca’s funky folk Day of the Dead-style skull and headphones logo says it all. Sleek and swanky industrial aesthetics extend from exterior to interior all the way up to a massive 180-seat rooftop patio. And, in tune with its classic Mexican cuisine, live Spanish guitar and bachata get strummed out by day. Come nightfall, the operation goes Miami-style with pulsing Latin pop.

Tacos platters are the main attraction here, and La Roca has assembled an impressive array with choice sides of corn, rice or beans. The Pastor folds up meaty marinated pork sweetly topped with grilled pineapple, onion and cilantro. Meanwhile, Panko Fish is a fun fish fry topped with avocado, tomato, red cabbage, chopped green pepper and chipotle. To shuttle these flavours down? A shot of the stuff upon which La Roca stakes its name: tequila. Offering over 50 varieties of the magical stuff, this is THE place in Winnipeg to sate your taste for agave. We go for aged Patrón Añejo, wafting wood, vanilla and smokey caramel. Speaking of caramel, there’s only one sweet here: Churros. But be warned - they are addictive. The traditional pastry sticks are decadently fried, rolled in cinnamon and sugar, and then dipped in caramel or chocolate. The party rolls on all week: Taco Tuesdays, Wine Wednesdays and Tequila Thursdays offer rockin’ specials on food and drinks. Happy Hour runs Tuesday to Saturday from 3pm to 6pm.

Sleek Sophistication Beautiful model Karlee boasts a sleek and sophisticated look – the perfect colour and style for her lifestyle as a very busy teen. For colour, the stylist employed a mix of two different highlighting techniques using Goldwell Gentle lift, toning the hair with a 10V to give it that overall cool look. Throughout her service, Karlee’s hair was kept healthy by using Goldwell Bond pro treatment. She went home with Goldwell Kerasilk Reconstruct shampoo and conditioner to keep her hair the way she likes it – healthy, long and blonde.

The relaxed beach wave... For her own look, stylist Kaitlyn Martin sports purple hair with a relaxed curl - a funky yet elegant style great for all occasions and all different lengths of hair. To achieve this look, start with hair in sections for size of curler (a one-inch curler was used in this case); take curler or wand to middle of the hair strand and curl until one to two inches from the bottom of the strand, holding curler there for a few seconds while the curl forms; then let it loose. Once you’ve accomplished all your curls, using an oil or hair serum, comb through the curls with your fingers. For a looser look, use a brush. Use hairspray to hold those curls in place, and you’re ready to step out on the red carpet or for a relaxing day on vacation! People always ask how to manage curly hair and what products are best to control the frizz. How it looks and handles is based on the weather, and either more or less humidity. In times of dryer weather, you need more moisture and larger amounts of products to control the curl. For Kayla’s very curly hair, Sussana used Be Curly Style Prep, Be Curly Enhancer to style into the hair wet; and then for finishing, Brillant Anti-Humectant and Emollient to smooth the frizz, and add moisture and lots of shine to her wonderful colour. Sussana’s approach to the haircut was to use scissors to create a layered graduated bob to avoid splintering the hair more, and on the side, clipped in an undercut. The colour accentuates the shape of the haircut with layering in Schwarzkopf Fashion lights copper hi-lites and Aveda Pure Pigments Orange, along with Aveda base colour and blonde lites using Aveda Enlightener. To tie it all together, the makeup style is a ”Grunge” theme. Sussana opted for the M.U.D. makeup line, using black eyeliner, and then applying Onyx, Chamois, Expresso and canyon eye shadows to create the heavier eye. Burlesque with Rich Brown eye pencil was used to line Kayla’s lips. Aveda Mosscara, Black Forest extends her lashes to finish the overall look. The Dhow House (ECW) by Jean McNeil

An intriguing novel about a group of white Africans, the descendants of Europeans used to calling the shots but now feeling threatened in the only place they’ve ever called home. Rebecca Laurelson, a young English doctor working in a trauma hospital in an unnamed African country, takes a break and spends time with family members she’s never met in their house on the east African coast. When terrorist attacks come close, we learn that everyone has secrets, especially Rebecca. A gripping, lushlywritten read.

A long poem by a writer who lives on a ranch in east central Alberta about living with a husband succumbing to dementia. The language is vivid, and the observations cut deep when she writes about the life she’s always known changing before her eyes, “the palette darker than I’d planned.” Or, “Is it enough to say I didn’t hear him?” A beautiful book - tough and never sentimental - but deeply moving.

Hot Town and Other Stories (At Bay Press) by Janet Trull

A collection of sharp stories - some so brief they’re almost miniatures - about the shenanigans in any small town - the kind of place where everyone knows everyone but that doesn’t stop people getting up to all sorts of mayhem: scandal, adultery, even murder. The tone ranges from witty and sardonic to really quite dark. Like bite-sized stories by Alice Munro...

Exotic handcrafted imports from the four corners of the world

An action-filled crime story that takes place on some of the meaner streets of Winnipeg. Grady Fisk is down but not quite out: his marriage is almost kaput, the cops know his name too well, and even his favourite bartender has had enough of him. Meanwhile, Nyah has seen too much for any 16-year-old kid. Some violent deaths bring the two together. It’s fast-paced, violent, pulpy fun, with several fools, too much whiskey, and a hero or two.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy MILES DAVIS Freedom Jazz Dance – The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 (Sony) Small combos rarely sound as big as the quintet Miles Davis led from 1965 to 1968. In tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter he had not only a warm second horn, but also a sublime composer. On piano, Herbie Hancock was already the funky Debussy, as much silk as soul. Bassist Ron Carter insinuated so much with one ringing note, and Tony Williams was a perpetual masterclass in musical drumming. A handsome box set captured much of it, but not all. Freedom Jazz Dance focuses on one album from that remarkable period, Miles Smiles, from 1966, with alternate takes, rehearsal material and raspy studio chat. The 23-minute opening take of Freedom Jazz Dance is a fractured, stop-start beginning, but it’s fascinating to hear the ideas take form over Williams’s multi-limbed drumming. Likewise, “Orbits”, which finally punches hard – check Hancock’s spidery solo – after several false starts, or the graceful “Footprints”, one of many magnificent shorter compositions. The discontinuity of the rehearsals will deter some, but when the band finds its groove there’s genius at work.

(Pink Floyd Records/Sony) If you haven’t the $650 and a spare weekend’s listening time for the massive box set of rare and early Pink Floyd, a two-CD distillation is a most reasonable alternative – a patchwork history of early singles, radio broadcasts and oddities, including many from when Syd Barrett led the band. So, the stirring but failed single, “Point Me at the Sky,” shares space with a rough sketch for Echoes, a live take of “Atom Heart Mother” without brass and choir, and the bucolic “Grantchester Meadows,” enlivened with pretty piano from Richard Wright. The second disc is almost all about film scores, distinguished by Wright’s “The Riot Scene,” written for Zabriskie Point and revived more fruitfully as the melody for “Us and Them.”

SAVINA YANNATOU/ PRIMAVERA EN SALONICO Songs of Thessaloniki (ECM) Long ago, the Greek port city of Thessaloniki was a cosmopolitan bazaar, shaped by the migration of Arabs, Jews, Armenians and many others – a stunning crucible informing this music. The splendid Greek singer, Savina Yannatou, and her band, Primavera en Salonico, animate the old songs in mysterious arrangements, where her voice, Kyriakos Gouventas’s violin and Harris Lambrakis’s nay (indigenous Arabic flute) light the shadows over a rumble of accordion, oud, double bass and percussion. The violin is a subtle ghost voice, weeping in the traditional “Turkish Calin Dvullian” and haunting the Greek song, “Poulakin eiha se klouvi.” Those entranced by the ethnocultural journeys of Loreena McKennitt and Alexis Kochan’s Paris to Kiev may invest with confidence.

Why did you choose to shoot the film in Winnipeg?

A Made in Manitoba Film by Local Filmmaker Tyson Caron Interview by Mia van Leeuwen Tyson, can you tell me about your journey into becoming a filmmaker? I did not come from a theatre background and was not someone who was heavily involved with the arts as a kid. I loved watching TV and movies like everyone does, but I really didn’t get involved in film until later in life. I went to the IH Asper School of Business, but after that I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. But I always had this connection to the movies. I liked the idea and potential of movies but growing up in a small town like Kenora (Ontario), there is no film industry there. I didn’t even know there was a film industry in Winnipeg until my best friend Paul Christie became an actor. He was getting roles in local Winnipeg productions and was eventually cast in The Crooked E: The Unshredded Truth about Enron that was shot here. So I finished my degree and found that I didn’t want to become a marketer or a business analyst. Instead, I was inspired by Paul, who was doing interesting and creative things. I knew I didn’t want to act though. I was good at English in school, so thought I would take a stab at writing. PHOTO: ALLAN FRASER

32 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2017

Hence, I wrote a script called Eugene about a guy who struggles with agoraphobia - Paul and I pitched it to the Chorus Entertainment Young Filmmakers Initiative and won! Paul directed it and we produced the film together; it turned out well. From there, I went to the Winnipeg Film Group to take classes, and knew I was doing the thing I should be doing. From 2002 onwards, I started a path of working in film where I took on many roles - a production manager, a production coordinator, a producer’s assistant and an associate producer - working 14-hour days on film sets. I always knew if I did this hard work and did it with grace and humility, that one day I would get my shot. What was your inspiration for your first feature film Lovesick: Get Over It? Lovesick came from my own personal experience with a relationship I had that ended. The film started out as something very personal but as time passed and I evolved as a person, the script evolved and took on a life of its own. The film became its own thing … I do see myself in the film but wouldn’t say it’s autobiographical.

I think Winnipeg is just as important a city as Seattle or Boston, New York or Chicago, or Paris … I love Winnipeg. Why can’t you have a romantic comedy set in Winnipeg? The film showcases some of my favourite parts of the city, and audiences who have watched it here seem to really enjoy seeing Winnipeg on film, so that’s exciting. What’s next on the horizon for you? I am working on another feature film script about sibling rivalry between a brother and sister that takes place at a lake, kind of like The Great Outdoors meets Fargo. I am also writing a musical! Will you continue to work as a filmmaker here in Winnipeg? I am committed to my community here. I don’t feel like I need to jump ship to Los Angeles or Toronto. My family is here; my partner’s family is here, and I have tons of friends here. I also have access to resources, and I teach screenwriting and act as a mentor to other filmmakers. So yeah, for now, I see way more value in staying in Winnipeg and telling Winnipeg stories. Tyson Caron’s feature film Lovesick: Get Over It played to sold-out audiences in February 2017 at Winnipeg’s Cinematheque. You can rent or purchase the film on iTunes.

All Over the Map BY CHRISTOPHER GRANT PHOTOGRAPHY GREG GALLINGER

STEVE KIRBY’S new Oceanic Jazz Orchestra release is, quite literally ‘All Over the Map.’ It is an ambitious work of art made up of musical ‘snapshots’ from locales along the W. 97th longitude. “With this project we captured the cultural fingerprints of places from Argentina to Nunavut that share Winnipeg’s longitude,” he says,“like postcards.” The sensual and eclectic mix of folk music and controversial protests, light-hearted tunes and classical overtures - even electronic trance with native beats - combine to reveal a vibrant yet disciplined vision. Indeed, the diversity of musical styles on the album reflects the dynamic membership - and even the name - of the Oceanic Jazz Orchestra. “Oceanic implies Third World. We’re a world orchestra. Most music is Euro or America centric. This is an Africanized version of jazz, combined with elements from the European classical tradition, and the folk sounds of communities all along this longitudinal axis.” Kirby has visited locations around the world, listening to the local folk music; he studies their instruments and learns their rhythms. Then he adapts and adopts them into his own compositions. The result is music that combines Kirby’s experience as a jazz bassist with his belief that music can link people across time, space, and culture.

Kirby himself is proof of the cross-cultural power of music. Raised in St Louis and then active in the New York City jazz scene, Kirby has made Winnipeg his home for over a dozen years. Just after 9-11, he was struggling to balance his growing success as a jazz bassist in New York with the demands of a young family when he was approached by the University of Manitoba to head up their new Jazz Studies program. “They made me a great offer,” he says. “Look, if I’m successful, I’m touring. When I’m home, I’m out looking for work. It’s not a way to raise a young family.” So when Winnipeg came calling, he jumped at the opportunity. What about our winters? “I’m a studio bunny,” he says, laughing. “The weather’s no problem because I don’t go out anyway.” Kirby came to music much later than most. “I was just out of the army and wanted to do something spiritual without it involving the church. Music seemed to be a great answer.” To learn music, he became a stock boy in a music store, to be around instruments. His first lessons were bass lines on a guitar. Soon he was a member of a local blues band. “When I played well, they left my amp on. If I didn’t play well, they turned it off, so I tried very hard to play well,” says Kirby.

“No one aspires to be a bassist,’ he continues. “The bass chooses you. Once you play the bass - it is the king of the quarter note pulse - and experience how it feels, there’s no going back.” A song is like a house, he explains, and chords are like the rooms within. “The bass builds the house and everyone else plays within it.” Unlike other musical genres, jazz is spontaneous composition and therefore a study of what makes language linguistic. It is also a bridge between cultures. A hundred years ago during segregation in America, music was the only acceptable reason for the races to mix and hang out. Each group brought their own traditions into this new melting pot and a new genre was born. As the trend blossomed into a definitive musical style, it was named jazz. “Jazz is basically musical talking,” he says. “Music is about rhythm, timbre, pitch and accent - it’s about language. And everybody’s a musician. You wouldn’t be able to communicate if you weren’t. Jazz is just my preferred language.” With All Over the Map, Kirby ventures further into the cultural bridge-building that created jazz in the first place. “This new album sets a high bar,” Kirby says. “There are other albums which set a high bar and I want to be among them.”

All you need

in Copenhagen is two wheels

O

n our first night in Copenhagen, my husband and I were having dinner at the home of a local couple when we heard a loud noise from the street. We rushed out to the balcony and watched in amazement as several thousand rollerbladers wheeled by to the rhythmic thump of some badass dance music. It was Friday night in Copenhagen. This ritual pretty much sums up the orderly but exuberant Danish experience. It’s no wonder Danes are consistently named the happiest people on earth. Copenhagen’s

streets are immaculate, its buildings beautifully preserved and public transportation is easy to navigate and marvelously efficient. Despite its more than a million citizens, Copenhagen feels more like a village than a city. The first thing you’ll notice are all the people riding bikes. Nearly half the population gets around on two wheels and it’s easy to see why. Cyclists are the royalty of the road in Denmark, with bike lanes as wide as car lanes and riders given enormous respect. Copenhagen has the whiff of utopia, particularly in the iconic Nyhavn district, with its 17th century waterfront of brightly coloured townhouses, restaurants and bars next to a harbour full of centuries-old wooden boats. We booked a double room at the stylish but reasonably priced Alexandria Hotel, a short walk from Tivoli Gardens. Here you are immersed in the world of Danish modernism, and can choose a retro room in styles ranging from the 1930s to 1970s. It may sound like a virtual museum but the effect is cozy and calming. Danish culture places a value on cozy. They even have a word for it. Hygge, which liter-

34 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2017

ally means snug, and translates to the idea of coziness, particularly when relaxing with good friends or family while enjoying good food. Danish rooms are full of beautifully styled, mid-century furniture, particularly chairs, and nowhere more than at DesignMuseum Danmark. If you like funky, colourful design, this museum covers both Danish and international design. Each room features a beautifully illustrated history of furniture, product and graphic design, fashion and public space design, housed in a building that was a former hospital and one of Copenhagen’s finest rococo buildings. The restaurant’s fresh and tasty

food can be enjoyed in the museum’s outdoor courtyard. Locally sourced and immaculately prepared, new Nordic cuisine has taken the gastronomic world by storm in the last decade. Danish food literally came out of nowhere. Much of the food is gathered daily from the surrounding countryside. Eating out is pricey, but the experience is never pretentious. In fact, it’s fun, at least until the bill arrives. Named best restaurant in the world for three of the last four years, Noma features dinner for two with matching wines for approximately $1,000 Canadian. Unless Anthony Bourdain is paying, that’s too rich for us. We opt to dine at BROR, a restaurant run by ex-Noma chefs. The “better” restaurants take bookings, starting three months in advance. We settle on a four-course meal with complementary wines. The presentation is stunning and the exotic ingredients blend well. Rhubarb is considered the delicacy of the moment, which makes us giggle, as we picture it growing wild in our mothers’ gardens.

viewing. But it’s worth it. Two at a time, people enter a tiny dark room, artfully designed with mountains of glass, lights and water. It’s genuinely surprising to later learn that the space measures a mere four by four metres. The next day, we take a stroll down the main shopping street, Stroget, with its slightly seedy vibe. Occasionally design stores like Hay or lllumus Boghis brighten the street, selling classic design pieces at reasonable prices.

There are several world-class museums just outside of Copenhagen, including the Arken (literally ark), which is surrounded by water on three sides. The highlight was a temporary exhibit by the eccentric French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, a feminist who had a flair for the dramatic. There was also work by Gerda Wagoner, from the recent film The Danish Girl.

Then there’s Tivoli, the legendary amusement park that’s as famous for stunning gardens as it is for highflying rides. First opened in 1843, it’s the second longest running amusement park in the world. At Tivoli, you can have a truly enchanting evening with dinner, ride a couple of the monsters, check out a concert or stroll the gardens, none of it quite seeming real.

With its striking location on a small cliff and equally fantastic collection of 20th century art, the Louisiana Museum is Denmark’s must-see attraction. Young children somersault down manicured hills as their parents stroll past sculptures by Henry Moore, Calder and Miro. The museum’s magnificent gardens seem to have exploded out of its art collection.

The Christiana area is a car-free and ecofriendly neighbourhood that was started by a group of hippies in 1971. They never left and have formed a kind of imperfect democracy. You can’t buy a house here, but you can apply to rent one, although none of the structures look permanent. You can watch free concerts and smoke weed openly here.

One must experience Gleaming Lights of the Souls by Yayoi Kusama to believe it. Visitors wait approximately 15 minutes for a 30-second

We skip the Little Mermaid sculpture and waterbus tours and the Hans Christian Anderson Museum (possibly a mistake),

and drive 20 minutes north to Skovskoved, Denmark’s seaside “Hollywood” district. The pace of life is slower here, offering seaside views that continually change in new light. Unusual country homes decorated with wood and straw provide a reminder that this was a former fishing village. On our last full day, we brave light rain and painful bicycle seats to take in the spectacular coastline along the Baltic Sea. We ride the impossibly wide bike lanes to Orddropguard, a museum tucked into a magical thicket of forest. It feels more like Bali than Denmark. The forest canopy is high and tropical, green in all directions. Before visiting the museum, we stop in at the restaurant located in the 2015 Zaha Hadid extension and nibble on open-faced sandwiches called smorsbrod. Lush gardens surround us on three sides. On the bike ride home, we find Arne Jacobson’s white metal petrol station. Built in 1954, it’s a model of how utilitarian buildings like gas stations can also be beautiful. In Copenhagen you can be stopped dead in your tracks just observing the beauty with which locals live their lives. Greg Klassen is a Winnipeg travel lover and writer.

Divide your pantry into zones. For example, group dried rice, beans and quinoa together in one zone. Then create another zone for flours, another for sugars and so on

2 3

Use clear storage containers so you know what you’re looking at.

Tape cooking or soaking instructions for rice, grains and beans on their respective containers, as well as the dates you last filled each bin.

4

To organize cans, use can racks to keep things in order. They come in varied shapes and sizes. Tip: Make sure your labels face out to easily identify the contents of each can.

5

Use shoe racks: You read that right. Hang a shoe rack (the type with pockets) on the back of your pantry door. You can use it to store anything from packets of yeast and instant oatmeal to measuring spoons and afterschool snacks.

t’s no secret that Canada’s population of those aged 55 years and up is growing. To meet the demand, developers have been working hard to create new style living facilities that are proving highly attractive for young seniors. Prairie Landing in Winnipeg’s eastern sector is a good case in point. Located on Cal Gardner Drive just off Peguis Street at a site in the Devonshire Village neighbourhood, Prairie Landing is close to shopping, dining, and recreation, with proximity to Kildonan Place, Club Regent Casino and Harbourview Recreation Centre. Operated by Burnett Management, a company with other successful 55 plus properties such as Kildonan Green in their portfolio, Prairie Landing is a 152-suite, seven storey apartment community dedicated to people age 55 and up. Suites are available in large one and two bedroom footprints with rents starting at $1295.00 monthly. Residents receive services such as

24-hour security and property maintenance, as well as the benefits of an onsite live-in property manager. According to leasing manager Rya Janzen, suites at Prairie Landing range in size from 786 sq. ft. for a one bedroom to 1119 sq. ft. for a two bedroom. “Everything except TV and phone is included,” she says. Kitchens feature luxury finishes as well as the latest in household appliances. Windows are oversized to let in lots of light, but they are also environmentally sensitive to keep apartments warm in the winter and cool in the summer. In addition to balconies, all suites offer wide doors for wheelchair access, making them fully visitable for those with mobility challenges. More, the building is concrete construction another plus that keeps suites quiet from any outside noise. A home environment dedicated to easy living is behind the attraction to Prairie Landing. For example, Janzen points out that the building features not just common areas where residents can gather, but also a fully equipped exercise facility, multi-purpose rooms, and two hospitality suites for visiting guests. “There are common rooms on each of the seven floors. This makes it easy to gather with family and friends, and removes one of the concerns about moving out of the spacious family home,” says Janzen, who adds that the main floor common room is the largest at 1500 sq. ft. and comes complete with kitchen and

shuffleboard. “This a great spot for family gettogethers, such as Christmas or other special occasions where a bit more space is required.” In addition to the common rooms on each floor with their exercise opportunities, each level also features a bright and open seating area near the elevators. According to Janzen, these sites feature large northeast facing windows to flood areas with natural light, creating a welcoming and attractive option for social interaction. So far, the interest in Prairie Landing has been strong. Janzen reports that after opening last June, the building is now 50 percent leased. “This means we still have excellent availability,” she says, inviting people interested in discovering the advantages of 55+ living to visit www.prairielanding.ca or take the short drive to 20 Cal Gardiner Dr. SPRING 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 37

Living easy Homestead Manitoba has been taking the bumps out of the road for Manitoba seniors for more than 15 years. Today the group operates five assisted living centres in Winnipeg, where facilities are located in nearly every sector of the city. Homestead is also present in south central Manitoba with a residence in Morden. The concept is one that allows people to remain in their communities as they age rather than have to move to unfamiliar territory. According to Homestead Manitoba Marketing Director Rya Janzen, the idea is to offer help to residents where needed. For example, Homestead’s assisted living residences offer chef prepared dining where kitchens take individual dietary needs into account, housekeeping service and activities from shopping trips to Christmas light tours. There are exercise programs, on-site banking, a hair salon, and guest suites for out of town visitors. All for a starting price of $2100 per month. “Our philosophy is one of inclusion and community,” says Janzen, mentioning the flexibility of all the properties. As a good case in point, residents can share amenities such as guest suites and common rooms in Devonshire I or II, as well as the adjacent 55+ building at Kildonan Green. In fact, residents of the 55+

another way Homestead goes the extra distance. Residences offer bright one and two bedroom apartments with walk-in showers, wheelchair accessible doorways and lots of room in common areas.

Homestead’s assisted living centres offer full time front desk staff, as well as on-site health care aides. According to Janzen, this is just

Vacation? Think yardcation Every summer, many Manitobans spend their vacations in beautiful cottage country. While these trips can be fun and worthwhile, they can also be daunting and expensive. Between the shopping, the packing, the travel time and the cost to maintain or rent a vacation property, people are looking for ways to spend their leisure time closer to home. What could be closer than your own backyard? “Designing and adding outdoor living spaces is one of the hottest trends in residential design,” says Pedro Gomes, owner of Prelude Landscaping.

“We take pride in our homes, investing countless hours rearranging and remodelling the interior; taking our imaginations outside is equally beautiful and rewarding,” he adds. “Your backyard space is the best place to let your dreams run wild, while adding value to your property.”

“An outdoor living space can contain anything you like, which makes it a fun space to design,” says Gomes. “It will add value, charm and personality to your new home, while creating a place for entertaining guests or spending quiet evenings outdoors.”

The team at Prelude Landscaping understands that there is nothing sweeter than escaping to your own backyard getaway to enjoy everything our spring, summer and fall seasons have to offer. The best way to do this is to incorporate an outdoor living room into your landscape plan.

Many Prelude Landscaping clients are looking for much more than just a place to use their BBQ. They are creating a personal outdoor oasis, including entire kitchen areas complete with gas outdoor grills, counter space, sitting areas and more. The key is to provide continuity from your indoor space to an outdoor space. Since the possibilities for outdoor living spaces are endless, it’s wise to consult with a professional as early as possible, ideally at the planning stage. Prelude Landscaping offers professional design services from concept to construction. “We combine each client’s personal preferences with our unique design ideas, making the process a true collaboration,” says Gomes. “We work through design challenges using creative solutions to maintain the artistic integrity of our collective vision.” He also suggests that since the kitchen is the heart of any home, then an outdoor kitchen can strengthen the connection between indoors and out.

Outdoor kitchens have grown in popularity because they help make cooking outdoors feels less like a chore and more of a pleasure. Creating a second kitchen complete with grill, refrigerator, cooktop and counter space means fewer trips back indoors. It also serves up a great space for entertaining: it’s where the action is in any outdoor living space. Backyard spaces can also benefit from the addition of an outdoor fireplace, pizza oven, fire bowls, or patio fire pits. These elements provide warmth and ambiance, and are natural places for friends and family to gather. Fireplaces, fire bowls and fire pits may be fuelled with gas or wood-burning for a more rustic ambiance. Water features provide a relaxing backdrop to any outdoor living space by introducing the sights and sounds of moving water. Through these and other outdoor solutions, Pedro Gomes and his Prelude Landscaping team have the passion and expertise for helping homeowners make the most of their properties. “Our work is recognized for marrying a creative aesthetic design with the latest sustainable products and practices. We ensure that our clients receive the best possible product for their investment and within their budget.” Prelude Landscaping makes loving outdoor living easy. Add fresh air and good company and you’ve got the recipe for the perfect “yardcation.” Website: www.preludelandscaping.com SPRING 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 41

OUTDOORL I V I N G An outdoor space, reimagined When these homeowners decided to remove the above ground pool that had been the focal point of their backyard for years, they wanted to realize the potential of the large, now vacant area. Their vision: a multifunctional entertainment space for lounging and relaxing. They enlisted 3 Seasons Landscaping to provide creative solutions that would bring their vision to life. The home already had a functional deck, stairs and brick walkway built along the back, but the challenge was to connect these areas to a new patio where the pool had been. 3 Seasons addressed the grade change by adding wide, stone stairs and meandering, sloped garden beds. They installed flagstone pavers in the patio area and used large boulders around the perimeter that organically prop up the transition to the raised beds. The plantings nicely balance the expansive patio and are full of perennials, shrubs and grasses for a lush, dense, textured look.

A wood pergola was built to one side as a semi-shaded space to relax during the days. At night, the glow from the central “prairie firepit” imbues a wonderful ambience throughout the entire space. The intimate space feels like a natural, sunken outdoor living room.

With some reimagining, 3 Seasons Landscaping took this yard to the next level. Vision realized. Website: www.3seasons.ca

OUTDOORL I V I N G Decked out Windeck believes in bringing sexy back…to decks. After 25 years of building high quality decks and railings that stand the test of time, the family-owned company can afford to be a bit cheeky. But don’t let their playful nature fool you; when it comes to decks, they are serious about delivering the best designs, products and services to their clients. The people at Windeck know that a deck is an outdoor extension of your home, and an investment that you want to enjoy for a long time. Let’s face it: Manitoba’s harsh weather conditions demand decks be high quality, low maintenance and durable. Windeck offers innovative products that deliver all this, and more, in their customized deck projects. The Windeck team created this deck with all the bells and whistles, and solid underpinnings. The entire space is designed for entertaining and relaxing, with defined lounging and dining areas. Windeck added a bar area, barbeque nook, and details like underbeam lighting. They used PVC decking with an ASA capstock, the latest technology in the industry. Like all Windeck products, it’s been tested against the rigours of our climate.

From imagination to creation, the result is not just functional and beautiful: it’s downright sexy.

Get inspired by Windeck. Then, let them do it once and do it right: a deck made just for you. Website: www.windeck.ca

Hold court on home turf If you and your family lead an active lifestyle but are looking for more safe and convenient ways to stay fit, the solutions could lie just outside your back door. Gary Weinberg, owner of Athletic Flooring Systems, suggests several easy and affordable options to transform any yard into an attractive play space for you, your family and friends. “Outdoor multi-purpose game courts by Sport Court® offer safety and versatility,” says Weinberg. Game courts consist of portable, interlocking polypropylene tiles that can be installed over any hard surface and used for a variety of sports, including basketball, tennis, pickleball and skateboarding. In winter, the surface can be used as an ice rink when flooded. The idea of “puttering around the yard” takes on a new meaning when you invest in a backyard golf green or putting green. “All the greens we install are fully customizable in shape and size,” says Weinberg. “We can even add fringes, hills, and sand traps to make them more challenging.”

Synthetic turf is gaining popularity for smaller spaces or even for entire lawns. For those that don’t have the time to water, fertilize, or cut their lawn weekly, synthetic turf looks and feels

great from the moment the snow melts. New turf products now look and feel like the real thing. Website: www.athleticflooring.ca SPRING 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 45

Bringing the Rainbows An interview with HGTV’s Tiffany Pratt Designer and HGTV personality Tiffany Pratt will “bring the rainbows” to this year’s edition of the Winnipeg Home + Garden Show (April 6-9, RBC Convention Centre). We sat down with Tiffany and asked for a few tips to get those home renovation projects underway.

and referrals from people in spaces that really speak to you. Being open about your budget early on will go a long way in managing expectations. Talented people with heaps of creativity are out there to help! Keep your heart and mind open to your surroundings!

Style Manitoba: What is the value in attending events such as the Winnipeg Home & Garden Show?

Style Manitoba: Where is a good starting place for design when working on a home project?

Tiffany Pratt: Getting out of the house, putting on a cozy sweater and getting inspired seems like a great reason to check out the Home + Garden Show! So many cool people to meet and so many wonderful ideas to collect, who wouldn’t want to take a spin through the possibilities?

Tiffany Pratt: Think about the most used areas of your home and start there. When I first walk into a home, my mind takes in the bones, the foundation, the wall colour, the appliances, furniture, and lighting.

Style Manitoba: What are the most common challenges people have when they work with a designer? Tiffany Pratt: Trust and budget. Finding someone you trust who understands your budget and needs is the key to success. Take your time. Ask for recommendations

Style Manitoba: How does good design take a home renovation to higher heights? Tiffany Pratt: Good design merges beautiful with functional, maximizes flow and storage, and makes a room say “I woke up like this!” The synergy of these things naturally brings a space to higher heights, and brings smiles to anyone who enters!

Style Manitoba: Why use a designer? Isn’t a building contractor good enough? Tiffany Pratt: It depends on your contractor and your taste. If you’ve hired well, a contractor will expertly get the job done with standard finishes. But if you want a more bespoke and personal approach to your life through design, an experienced designer is well worth the investment. They get to know you and your needs, and leave you in a space that exceeds your wildest dreams. A good designer can help you discover a style that is unique to you, and with trust, together you can design a home that is uniquely you!

A Parade of options The Spring 2017 Parade of Homes opens for viewing March 4 to March 26 in a wide range of locations. In fact, 33 neighbourhoods will participate in this season’s showcase of home designs by MHBA homebuilders. Look for 132 exquisite properties from 37 builders in what is the province’s best opportunity to kick off new home excitement for the year. There is a lot of territory to cover at this spring event. Locations include newer sites such as Ridgewood West and Scotswood Meadows in Charleswood, as well as Bonavista, Prairie Pointe, Taylor Farm and new streets in Devonshire Village. Expect to find action in the more established neighbourhoods as well, where builders will have properties in all the leading locales such as Bridgwater, Countryside Crossing, Pritchard Farm, Sage Creek, La Salle and Stonewall to name just a few. Of the 37 builders, there are many longstanding participants (check out a sampling of communities and home designs in this issue) and there are also newer players, such as The Kothari Group (Crocus Gardens, Prairie Pointe, Murano Gardens), JCP Homes (Niverville), and Manak Homes (Waterford Green). According to Manitoba Home Builders Association President Mike Moore, there are so many reasons to make plans to attend the Parade. “First, this is a great way to discover a new home; people that are in the market now for a property find the Parade the perfect showcase for the best in new home designs. We find that others who may be five years away from making a home change look to the Parade as a good way to start the planning process and find out what’s on the market. There are also people who are not looking for a new home, but are interested in learning what’s innovative in design and decor that can be added to their existing property when they do a renovation. These showcase homes are an ideal place to see what the pros use when it comes to state-of-the-art appliances, HVAC, and countertops. We also see a lot of decorators and designers dropping by locations to get a better picture of the latest trends in colours, fabrics and surfaces,” says Moore. No matter what your reason is for getting in the car and driving around the 33 neighbourhoods, expect to discover an incredible array of options laid out at the Spring 2017 Parade of Homes you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the innovative designs. From exceptional single-family homes to luxurious condominiums all set in extremely well planned communities, there’s something for everyone.

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

Four Distinct Neighbourhoods BY DONNA MINKUS

Showhomes provide sampling of design Since development began almost a decade ago, Bridgwater has been recognized as one of Winnipeg’s largest residential developments. That hasn’t changed, according to Jaime Patrick, Director, Land Development, Manitoba Housing. As of December 31, 2016, there is a total of 3000 occupied single-family and multi-family homes in the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater, and the development is still leading the city in building permits. Consisting of four distinct neighbourhoods – Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lakes, Bridgwater Trails and Bridgwater Centre - all interconnected by a network of pathways and sidewalks, each offers specific amenities so homebuyers can select the neighbourhood they want to live in, as well as their builder. Showhomes in each of the neighbourhoods provide a good sampling of design and architecture from designated homebuilders. Bridgwater Trails, the newest residential development, offers the largest number of singlefamily and multi-family units. With a total of 26 showhomes in the 2017 Spring Parade of Homes, Bridgwater Trails features the largest number of showhomes: 17 on Del Monica Road and five on Rose Lake Court. The A & S showhome located at 15 Del Monica Road is a two-storey, three-bedroom home featuring a grand entrance with double glass doors and large walk-in closet. The foyer leads

to the main feature of the home, a central island fireplace divider. This wall feature allows both the great room and kitchen to focus on the fireplace. While all areas on the main floor have nine-foot ceilings, the great room ceiling and its windows soar up two storeys, resulting in an abundance of natural light on both levels, says Matthew Yan of A&S Homes. Bridgwater Trails features an extensive park and trail system. The 50-acre park includes sports fields/courts and a hilltop lookout, scheduled for completion in late summer 2017. A fountain also situated on a hilltop, provides a good view of the park and surrounding area. Bridgwater Forest - the first neighbourhood to be developed - is expected to be fully occupied by the end of 2017. Bridgwater Lakes offers a variety of lot types, including large laneless lots that feature custom built homes with lake lots and walkout basements, regular lane lots and smaller lots on back lanes.

Located in the heart of the three residential neighbourhoods, Bridgwater Centre features a mix of residential, commercial and retail. Hilton Homes and A & S have showhomes in Bridgwater Centre. Hilton’s showhome is located at 180 Park West Drive. “This single family attached home is actually a duplex, but the perception of a duplex changes when it is built in Bridgwater Centre,” says Spencer Curtis, Hilton Homes. “Amenities in the plan include a covered deck which overlooks the lake, a light filled walkout basement and an incredible location on the lake; it’s an outstanding value for this neighbourhood. The new grocery store and shops are generating a lot of excitement in all the Bridgwater neighbourhoods,“ he adds. A number of commercial developments are scheduled to open in early 2017, including RBC Financial, Wyatt Insurance, Elite Physio, Bank of Montreal, Ultra Cuts, Pet Value, and Vet Clinic. “Tim Horton’s is expected to open in late summer and Shopper’s Drugmart will also be coming soon,” Patrick says.

Bridgwater Lakes’ showhomes are located at 100 Lake Bend Road and 42 Clear Spring Road. Built by Arlt Homes, the bungalow at 42 Clear Springs Road has over 3100 square feet of living space and is built on a visitable lot, which means the entrance is at ground level, allowing easy access. Featuring Prairie style architecture, “the home has 10-foot ceilings that allow light to fill the space; the colour scheme is warm tones, creating a comfortable and homey lived-in feel,” says Jason Arlt. “The rear yard backs on to the lake, offering a panorama of the entire community.”

A home is your sanctuary, the place where you and your family can find peace and repose. For over a decade, the team at Discovery Homes has taken this to heart when creating personalized new builds that combine exquisite design with functionality. Julie Smith, in-house designer and assistant general manager at Discovery Homes, says they are devoted to creating custom designs and positive experiences for their clients. Smith states at Discovery, the team works to ease the stress of building a new home by “having a constant open line of communication with every step.”

This communication starts with guiding customers through the personalized design process and continues with tours during the homebuilding stage, along with regular updates on the status of their home. “We form close relationships with every customer, we want our clients to not only feel involved but to enjoy the process of building a home,” says Smith. General manager, Gord Gray agrees, adding further, “When you become our customer, you become family.” This commitment to providing exceptional service while creating

functional, classic designed dwellings is exemplified in The Kelsey showhome series. The sister series consists of two styles: The Kelsey Elegance at 201 Bonaventure Drive E. in the Bonavista development, and The Kelsey Explore situated in Bridgwater Lakes at 27 Del Monica Road. This 2 storey, threebedroom, 2½ bathroom home can be customized to fit the needs of any family. The Kelsey Elegance is the newest model and was crafted by a collaborative process between a group of international and local designers. Together they created a one of a kind home that brims with a masterful design that boasts clean modern elegance. The home is filled with luxurious contemporary amenities like glass walls and an open riser staircase, and an expansive entertaining / living space. The second version, The Kelsey Explorer, offers all the style of a rich urban loft with the warmth of a family home at an obtainable price point. The home boasts an open concept, an inviting grand entrance, and meticulous attention to detail that ensures every space within is engaging and ready to be enjoyed.

Country living in the city Countryside Crossing is all about getting the best of all possible worlds when it comes to new home construction and community. The location is inside Winnipeg’s perimeter, yet offers the lower tax base of East St. Paul. Lots are ample for country-sized living with big footprints for new home excitement. And, while Countryside Crossing offers a slate of four of the province’s leading new home builders - Maric Homes, Warkentin Homes, K.Streu Homes, and Irwin Homes - buyers at Countryside Crossing can pick their own builder if desired, an aspect that is not common among new home developments. “There is so much that is unique about Countryside Crossing,” says Realtor® Mark Penner. “If designs meet the architectural guidelines and building codes, buyers are free to develop as they see fit. Here the lots are large, averaging around 10,000 square feet. This means lots of privacy and room to develop a new home that has space for families to grow and space for all the toys that make country living so much fun.”

54 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2017

Penner reports that there is still good availability with about 25 percent of lots remaining in the development. He notes there is a good selection of properties on the south side of the creek that are ideal for walkouts and the creation of ‘Lookout Homes’ with stunning views of the community’s natural aspects.

Altogether, Countryside Crossing offers a total of 154 country-sized fully serviced lots with some 35 properties still remaining. All infrastructure including parks, landscaping and fencing is complete. Visit www. countrysidecrossing.com or drop by the open showhomes for more information.

A blend of modern materials and woods can also be found in the kitchen, which boasts a contemporary mix of flat-panel rift oak doors and acrylic white cabinetry anchored by quartz stone countertops and a glossy white tile backsplash. HOMES &

A Pointe Well Taken

Opportunities still exist for new home buyers in South Pointe, one of the Winnipeg’s most exciting planned communities. But with about 95 percent of lots already taken, the development, located in Waverley West in the city’s southern quadrant, is expected to be fully sold out soon. Since starting the project almost a decade ago, developer Ladco has watched the community become one of the city’s most popular new home addresses. According to David Borger, Ladco’s Vice President of Land Development, South Pointe offers much to those seeking an uptick to lifestyle. Spencer Curtis agrees. Curtis is a principal with Hilton Homes, one of the front line builders that have made South Pointe so inviting. He says, “People discovered the advantages of South Pointe early on and sales were strong, thanks to great new home designs and value from leading builders. The neighbourhood is also close to a full range of services like shopping centres and restaurants, as well as facilities such as the University of Manitoba and the Victoria General Hospital.” Here, Mike Caruthers, Ladco’s Manager of Land Development, states that the community is maturing well. “All the parks are finished, the trees are growing nicely and all the services are installed. This means no waiting for recreation amenities to be completed. Everything is done,” he says, adding that the neighbourhood is also home to a new state-of-the-art school.

The Pembina Trails School Division reports École South Pointe School, a new Kindergarten to Grade 8 facility, is now open The school will service up to 800 students and offer 74 preschool spaces. Located on an 8.8-acre site at 615 Kirkbridge Drive, residents of South Pointe can expect to find facilities for special needs, a resource centre and library, music room, PhysEd and health facility, outdoor learning area as well as a practical arts classroom. With just 70 lots remaining, South Pointe is quickly reaching completion. “If you have yet to discover this great community, make plans to do so before all the lots are gone,” advises Curtis, inviting new home buyers to experience the excitement of new home design alongside great community planning.

Prairie Pointe New home buyers love south Winnipeg. Already, they have made the southern sector of the city number one in building permits over the last few years. Ladco plans to keep this ball rolling with the launch of Prairie Pointe, a 640acre, 2200-lot extension of the hugely popular South Pointe community in Waverley West. Located just to the west of Kenaston Blvd., Prairie Pointe is now completing its first stage of development. According to Ladco’s Mike Caruthers, this first stage offers over 200 lots

Neighbourhoods

of which about 85 percent are currently sold. “This leaves about 30 lots in this stage,” he says, commenting that the community is planned as an inclusive neighbourhood with a wide range of housing options. Caruthers reports they are starting on the second stage of servicing now as they move forward on this exciting new community. Slightly larger than South Pointe at build-out, Prairie Pointe will include 75 acres of space for multi-family properties such as condos, townhomes and apartments. And like South Pointe, the new development will hook up to the Active Transportation Network and its myriad of bicycle paths, as well as transit and main auto routes. Just four minutes from the Perimeter and a world away from urban congestion is Deer Pointe, a new community that offers much to new home buyers. A great example of this lifestyle opportunity is Parkhill Homes’ exquisite residence at 224 Deer Pointe Drive. A 5,035 square foot walkout bungalow, this home backs onto both the creek and Breezy Bend Golf & Country Club. “The view is more like what you would expect to find at a resort property,” says Lori Thorsteinson, Broker/Owner, Loren Realty and Sales Manager with Parkhill Homes. “Here, the proximity to nature and the well manicured fairways of Breezy Bend contribute to an uncom-

mon beauty that is the perfect setting for this residential gem.” Lori describes the property as one that blends the exterior natural elements with interior design through a palette that uses wood, metal and stone to create living spaces that are warm, relaxed and inviting. A great case in point is the foyer, a large area that opens up to wide stairs and the lower level, where stone tiling was used to create a stunning feature wall. As well, a linear fireplace that can be viewed from the foyer, dining room and great room delivers both a unified view and contributes to the openness of the spacious

overall plan. For example, the dining room is open concept leading to the great room and kitchen, where large windows offer breathtaking views; the space provides for easy entertaining and family living options. In the cutting edge kitchen Parkhill has left nothing out. Here features include maple cabinetry, a unique raised island, a walk-in pantry and wet bar, as well as distinctive granite counters. There is even a Wolf gas range where the six burners stand ready to make short work of cooking chores. Good Medicine “Architecture is like medicine; it helps you enjoy life more,” laughs Heinz Albers, owner of H. Albers Builders Ltd. And there’s plenty of that good stuff to go around when you step inside one of his custom built homes. His attention to detail and dedication to quality workmanship has made him the builder of choice for many discerning homeowners. Albers latest showhome at 114 Silver Sage Crescent in Sage Creek features those architectural details he’s been known for - whether it’s a large wave-like ceiling embellishment over a table, or something as subtle as rounded wood brackets, there’s always something to catch the eye. One of the most visually stunning elements of this 1,550-square-foot bungalow is the kitchen. The modern mixture of white high-gloss cabinets, provided by Kitchen Craft, and dark walnut cabinets and accents bring a unique blend of dark and light. Walnut, a favourite hardwood of Albers and his quality-conscious customers, is carried throughout the rest of the house, from a customdesigned entertainment centre in the great room to the large mudroom’s seating bench, which is coupled with ample hooks and storage to keep the space pristine. Even more impact can be felt in the master bedroom’s ensuite, featuring an oversized shower with a rain showerhead, six-foot soaker tub, and a surround of mirrors. Yet, sometimes architecture is not always about making a huge statement; sometimes it’s the subtleties that make a design great. For example, the builder’s former showhome at 10 Water Lily Lane in Sage Creek utilizes rows of inset LED lighting, provided by Super-Lite, to line the top of the two archways that define the dining area from the living room. Or the retro-inspired kitchen in another previous Sage Creek showhome that makes the mood unique simply with two vertical red lights flanking the stove top for a bright flash of colour, and paired perfectly with the crimson pendant lights. For over 45 years, Albers has brought an unparalleled level of knowledge and expertise to every one of his custom built homes. There’s quantity, and then there’s quality. H. Albers Builders Ltd. knows the latter is what’s truly important when you’re building a custom home. More than that, Albers takes care of the details to ensure that the process of building a home is as easy and worry-free as possible. Working directly with clients one-on-one, from concept to finished product, the company’s exceptional homes always feature quality construction and aesthetically pleasing, well-designed spaces. Live Larger New home buyers that have yet to discover the advantages of La Salle and Stonewall need to give consideration to these two wonderful places to raise a family. Both communities boast endless amenities, such as community and fitness centres, daycares, schooling for your children, and all the features you look for in a fully developed neighbourhood. Ventura Land Company Inc. is the group behind new developments such as Quarry Ridge Park in Stonewall, as well as Prairie View Lakes and Kingswood South in La Salle. According to Tim Comack, Vice President of Development, these locations offer a far better value equation than many people realize. “The fully serviced building lots are larger in size and substantially more affordable than those in the city. Now, on top of that, you don’t have to pay the City of Winnipeg’s Growth Tax, which is equal to $10,000 plus on your average 1,800 square foot home. Then there are lower property taxes on the home once it’s built,” he says, adding that buyers can build much more expansive homes on the oversized lots something that just isn’t an option in the city.

Here, the community is being built out over 20 phases complete with parks, walking paths and meeting spaces, all alongside a fully matured forest.

Comack reports that there are a wide variety of properties available. “We offer lake walkouts,

“The site is designed around the existing green space,” he says, noting that the idea has been to create an inclusive mixed community with everything from executive properties to apartments and townhomes. “These two towns are just a few minutes from the Perimeter but offer people easy access to everything you would look for in the city. If you haven’t considered the short drive to either La Salle or Stonewall, you should.”

Neighbourhood inspiration B Y R O W A N G R AY P H O T O G R A P H Y: M I C H A E L R O B E R T S One of Winnipeg’s newest residential development projects finds itself at home among the renowned architecture of Winnipeg’s River Heights neighbourhood. Curtis Moffat and his team from Pioneer Building have sought to create one-of-a-kind infill homes that successfully bridge neighborhood character and modern design. Certainly, Moffat has embraced this challenge with the construction of innovative additions and homes that are not just built, but also masterfully crafted with a meticulous eye for detail. “It is a matter of aligning the home with the neighborhood; we want to make homes that complement the area,” he says. Pioneer Building’s newest endeavor is a three-bedroom, two-storey, 2000 square foot showhome situated at 22 Greenlawn Street. The new residence stands between Lanark and Beaverbrook streets and exemplifies Pioneer’s central principles with

a bright open concept that combines elements of chic industrial details and pre-war architectural charm. The main floor is welcoming with an entertainment-sized living space and a well-considered galley kitchen. Upstairs, a breathtaking master bedroom is found with a luxurious four-piece ensuite and a south-facing balcony overlooking the area’s mature tree-lined streets.

neighborhood provides homeowners a unique opportunity. Now, there is no longer a need to decide between living in a mature neighbourhood rich with history and character, or having the comforts and amenities of a new build. With a Pioneer home, you can have both.

This design at 22 Greenlawn, in combination with his own background growing up in rural Manitoba, is in many ways inspired by the rich building history of places that Moffat has travelled. “The design at Pioneer is defined by an understanding of great architecture,” he says, commenting further that their level of precision and innovation is made possible thanks to a strong quality culture focused on disciplined planning and building trust. “At Pioneer, we live by the quote made famous by Abraham Lincoln: ‘Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe’.” Moffat and his team have learned through years of experience that an investment of time in the initial planning stage not only ensures projects are finished on target, but that the building experience is enjoyable for everyone involved. This culture of integrity at Pioneer Building and the respect for the architecture of an existing

TAYLOR FARM

A BEAUTIFUL BALANCE OF CITY AND COUNTRY LIVING Just west of Winnipeg, the new community of Taylor Farm is ideally located along the banks of the Assiniboine River in Headingley. Among the first regions settled in Manitoba due to its appealing proximity to the river and abundant farmland, this community is one of the most desired pieces of land to be developed as residential in the Headingley area. Yet, everything that was appealing about it then still endures today. “We know that the natural landscape is definitely going to influence the materials we use and help create an overall cohesive look for the neighbourhood,” says Philip Musick of Sterling Homes.

72 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2017

Community developers and landscape architects have enhanced the natural landscape with areas of varied elevation. While naturalized wetlands and trails have become signature elements in Qualico Communities,

Taylor Farm’s will be unique as the water will actually flow alongside winding trails through the community and end at the banks of the Assiniboine River. As one of the newest developments in the RM of Headingley, Taylor Farm is well-suited to those looking to build a custom home and create a balance between country and city living. “When you compare these lots to what you are getting inside the city, Taylor Farm is definitely giving you much more for your money,” says Frank Cotroneo of Artista Homes. “Our homes in Taylor Farm are going to include wood and stone that will bring out the natural character and beauty of the area.”

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

“We know that the natural landscape is definitely going to influence the materials we use and help create an overall cohesive look for the neighbourhood.”

With six custom home builders, Taylor Farm provides an opportunity to design expansive custom and luxury homes, starting at a minimum of 1,500 square feet. “The homes we design here can be different than what we can normally build within the city. We have a lot more room and width to work with in these particular lots,” says Jason Arlt of Arlt Homes.

Larger lots provide ample room for spacious custom homes.

In recent years, it has become an increasingly popular trend to separate the master suite from the other bedrooms in new homes. However, with Taylor Farm’s larger lots, there’s even more opportunity and inspiration for expansive main floors, spacious great rooms and distinct living quarters.

BUILDING ON HISTORY John Taylor (1834-1925) made an incredible impact on the Headingley area. He was the community’s first teacher, an influential local politician elected into the first Legislature of Manitoba, a dedicated farmer, successful merchant, and a father of 14 children. He played a pivotal role in shaping Manitoba’s rich history and now his contributions will live on in this new community that carries his namesake.

“This gives everyone a little bit more privacy. The kids can keep their mess on their end and parents can get a little peace and quiet.” says Arlt. Arlt says he’s finding that Taylor Farm’s proximity to Winnipeg’s amenities is a huge selling feature. “It’s just a few minutes off Portage Avenue or Roblin Boulevard, and potential buyers love the fact that they can still live in the country, but can get to work with a short commute,” he says. Taylor Farm is also within easy reach of Headingley’s community centres and rinks, shops and restaurants. For active families looking to spend time outdoors in nature, there are plenty of snowmobile trails and recreation such as the Breezy Bend Country

Club and John Bloomberg Golf Course and Softball Complex.

to drive through the community,

Arlt believes that many homebuyers will allow the community’s natural environment to have an influence on their designs. “There’s going to be a huge emphasis on the rustic and organic style. These houses will still be modern and contemporary, but we are going to see some rustic finishes like wrought iron accents and barn board.”

Sometimes one piece, one feature can set the tone of a home. In the case of 35 Trailside Crescent in South Pointe, it’s a Tyndall stone pillar set in the 3,700-square-foot home’s entrance that marks Artista Homes as Manitoba’s premier luxury homebuilder. A contemporary look blended with warm classic elements, the exterior of the home offers up ample attributes, including a threecar tandem garage, second floor balcony with glass railings, and tiered level landscaping and fountains. Inside, the main level offers a unique feel. The feature pillar either directs guests to the den with a glass wall that looks into the great room and a front window which looks out to the front yard water feature; the great room with its 19-foot-ceilings and lake views; or the kitchen the feature piece of the home. Dark, high-gloss acrylic cabinets, a glass wall backsplash and an island with waterfall quartz countertops give the kitchen a modern flair. Yet, the adjacent dining area’s pine-clad walls and ceilings, along with large windows overlooking the rear yard, give a sense of invitation and warmth. Just as snug is the

Upstairs, the innovation continues in the master suite, where built-in cabinetry offers an airy alternative to the traditional closet. The ensuite features a large custom tile shower with body spray system, a freestanding tub with a window overlooking the lake, a large vanity

The walkout lower level features a gym area with tall mirrors and rubber flooring, games space, fireplace and TV area, a large wet bar with quartz countertop, and an extra bedroom.

Where Dreams Meet Reality The team at Pine Creek Homes recognizes that most people are not sufficiently prepared for the road that lies ahead when starting the building process. Many people spend years envisioning their dream home or cottage, but when it comes closer to becoming a reality, feel intimidated trying to navigate the process alone. And rightfully so. Building a new custom home or cottage involves a lot of decision-making, choices aplenty and a fairly large time commitment on the part of the customer. And to top it off, this will likely be one of the most expensive purchases they will ever make. Customers are not often given due credit for all the hard work they put into making decisions and how critical they are to the build, as well as the end result.

of construction and the decisions that need to be made at each and every turn, from choosing a lot, all the way through to moving date.

To help people prepare for a custom build and alleviate some of the stress that goes along with it, the team at Pine Creek put together an email series that walks clients through the process, navigating them through all the stages

The Art of Home

Neighbourhoods

Great art is often inspired by the combination of two contrasting elements and is created by a person who sees possibility missed by others. Areté Builders exemplifies this, with large-scale specialized renovations that take impressive homes to new levels with contemporary amenities and premier design. Zoé Austin, owner and lead designer, says the team of skilled craftspeople she’s cultivated at her boutique building firm “creates homes that function as new builds with all the charm and classic characteristics of an older home.” Respecting the history of a home and the existing architecture of a community is important to Austin as Areté projects are often situated in renowned and historic neighborhoods. This regard for an area and classic design is why every Areté renovated home not only aligns with the level of architecture in these established neighborhoods, but is also a welcome addition. Working with buildings that are rich with history provides Austin boundless inspiration, often resulting in one of kind elements being reclaimed and infused into the design. Austin says when developing a concept, “we try to

take what a home gives us and let that home speak for itself. This results in a great balance of character, and a clean, fresh aesthetic.”

with a great amount of attention and energy paid to functionality and timeless design. In other words, I build homes for families that I would be proud to raise mine in.”

With each project, Austin says the central philosophy of Areté is “building with integrity,

With over 15 floor plans, and interior options to suit any taste, there’s something for empty nesters, the young professional, or anyone who’s looking to downsize or upsize. Set on the grounds of the Asper Jewish Community Campus (AJCC), a designated heritage site, Karma Developers’ design had to meet criteria set by Heritage Manitoba. In order to reflect the historical nature of the grounds, Karma utilized limestone, Manitoba stone, and four-storey grand columns on the

exterior to complement and blend with the early 1900’s era motif. Along with the historical value, the property boasts some of the city’s best amenities mere steps away from the building. The Rady Centre offers not only recreational facilities, including the number one gym in the province, a salt water pool, and indoor three-lane track, but also a theatre, restaurant, community programming, and a wonderful focal point for gathering with friends and family. Residents of 139 Tuxedo will receive a one-year membership to the Rady, making it even easier to enjoy this high-quality centre.

Just beyond the campus, paved paths run along Wellington Crescent and down to Assiniboine Park, the Leo Mol Sculpture garden, the Lyric Stage, and Qualico Family Centre, offering up ample opportunities to enjoy nature. The gorgeous park settings surrounding 139 Tuxedo can easily be enjoyed, thanks to the spectacular terraces, balconies, and large windows offering abundant natural lighting as part of the condo’s design. The airy feel continues inside with true nine-foot ceilings throughout the living space (10 feet if you’re in the penthouse), where spacious rooms are the norm. Karma, a company which has developed over 700 multi-family units, was sure to tick every box on the condo dweller’s wish list, offering interior amenities usually reserved for upgraded packages as standard options. Kitchens are equipped with sleek stainless steel appliances, solid stone countertops, natural gas cooktops, and sophisticated French door refrigerators, while bathrooms boast only the best quality porcelain tile flooring (heated in master ensuites) and tub surrounds, along with glass shower doors and Kohler fixtures. Lauzon engineered Canadian hardwoods run throughout the entire suite, whether it’s an 820-squarefoot two-bedroom condo, or a 2,400-squarefoot dwelling. A first for the developer in Charleswood, The Charles Condominiums are now on the rise at 545 Dale Blvd., set for late 2017 possessions. Demand for the condominium lifestyle in the west of the city was first tested with the builder’s recent development, Golden Gate Estates. The bungalow condominiums enjoyed explosive success, selling out just six months after the launch. “We’re expecting similar crowds this time around, with throngs of buyers who are residents that want to remain in the area,” says Brenlee Coates, marketing coordinator for StreetSide Developments. “The

Charles is perfect for buyers who are looking to move into their firstever home, or for those who are downsizing.” From the lush, forested trails, to its cherished local eateries, Charleswood is known for its sense of community and landscape akin to a small town. The Charles will position buyers to get the most out of the neighbourhood, with nearby amenities including a No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart, tavern, restaurants, bank and express liquor mart. Also close at hand are quiet, treelined streets set against a backdrop of nature, offering the frequent wildlife sightings the area is known for. Tapping into the neighbourhood’s reputation for community

Neighbourhoods

gathering and nature gazing, The Charles offers a common green space in its design, perfect for dog walking, lounging with friends, or an outdoor workout. Indoors, The Charles is equally enriching, featuring an exercise room and lounge, upgraded finishes like vinyl plank flooring, and heated underground parking, all adding maximum comfort and value in the new condominium homes. Currently preselling the first phase of 46 apartment-style condos, The Charles is made up of a mix of one and two-bedroom condos ranging from 600 to 1,100 square feet – offering a floor plan for any new condo owner.

Buying in the early stages of construction means you have the first opportunity at any premium suites in the building, allowing you to choose your most desired location within the building. Plus, for a limited time, your purchase comes with the advantage of meeting with a design consultant to select custom finishes or colours to maximize your enjoyment of your home. Starting from just $185,900 including GST, The Charles provides an exciting opportunity to live an urban condominium lifestyle in the neighbourhood you love. HOMES &

A Custom Home and a Custom Lifestyle

Simplifying your life doesn’t have to mean sacrificing everything that’s essential to making your house a home. In fact – it can actually mean you’re getting more. Here in the tranquil and picturesque setting of Southlands Village, you can bring together everything you desire in a truly custom home, yet enjoy the streamlined lifestyle that condo living provides.

“It’s well-maintained, there is consistency and a sense of ownership and pride. Those who understand and commit to the ‘bare land’ condo concept of Southlands Village really like it,” adds Rolfe. “It’s offering the unique turnkey aspects of a safe, gateless community, providing some exclusivity, all while being fully maintained.”

Situated just outside of Winnipeg’s north perimeter, this charming community of custom designed, detached bungalows is set amidst the flawless prairie landscape and natural beauty. The area has become known for creating a breathtaking first impression for visitors and potential homebuyers alike.

When you choose your lot in Southlands Village, included in the price is your choice of several high-end landscaping packages. On top of this, a very reasonable condo fee includes professional maintenance year-round. Every flowing lawn connects to the surrounding lush landscape of native grasses, wetlands and dry creek beds, all of which are meticulously groomed in the warmer months. During the winter, snow service keeps the pavements cleared from the streets and driveways, right up to your front door.

“We can’t talk enough about what it feels like to drive in and see the cul-de-sacs and bays wrapped around the private creek beds and wetlands,” explains Dan Rolfe, Vice President of Maric Homes. Maric has been building in Southlands Village for seven years, so Rolfe has seen firsthand that as the community matures, it just keeps getting better. “This creates a return on investment that is a key draw for people looking to buy in the area,” he says.

“That appeals to a lot of people. People would rather be spending time doing other things than taking care of their yard. It also makes it easy for professionals, travellers, cottage owners and snowbirds because everything is still being taken care of whether you’re there or not,” says Kurt Streu of K. Streu Homes.

Neighbourhoods

on the upper and lower levels, residents work directly with their builders to realize their specific vision. They’re optimizing their home’s design and square footage to suit the way they really want to live. “We can develop something that flows well for entertainment purposes… virtually anything can be incorporated into the home,” says Streu. And the flexibility is proving popular. “Really, this is almost the last chance to build in Southlands Village because this development will be sold out in the very near future.” Eric Vogan of Qualico Communities confirms that this unique development has gained a lot of momentum recently. “People are seeing that Southlands Village creates a way of living that has so much to offer,” says Vogan. “When you build in Southlands Village, you get incredible value,” he adds. “This gives you the freedom to invest more into your home because it ensures that every house on the street will be finished to the same high standards.”

“One nice part about this neighbourhood is being able to build pretty much anything you want so long as it fits on the lot,” says Streu. “You don’t have to follow the typical cookie cutter style you see in other condo communities – you’re able to do your own individual thing.” From the high-end finishes and fixtures, dream kitchens and advanced technology you’d expect in a custom build, to the number of bedrooms

Fenestration – Window and Door Trends for 2017 BY AL DUECK & AYNSLEY DUECK

C

ontrasting but complementary trends – when carefully selected – are emerging in the fenestration world to meet today’s project requirements, almost regardless of type. There’s been extensive use of very dark colours, such as Black or Espresso, and sometimes Silver mist on window frames. These colours seem almost heavy, but in reality, can play out an almost industrial touch and are used in very minimalist ways, maximizing glass area and views. Following that theme, ever-larger spaces are being created with taller ceilings, resulting in larger openings, window and door frame assemblies, and insulating glass units. There are definitely limits to what is practical, and it is best to consult with both an experienced window consultant and a builder or installer with experience in handling custom fenestration elements. Furthermore, Canadian building codes are increasingly focused on properly tested and documented details to ensure customers’ needs are practical, for both short and longer terms. These trends challenge both the window frame maker and the maker of the insulating glass units. Tip: Do your homework to ensure glazing that will be “working” in a Manitoba winter has

excellent warm edge spacers and is backed by a solid warranty. Also on trend is the more extensive and creative usage of taller and larger sliding or swinging door assemblies. Again, door and window makers are forced to ensure that the components and designs of these door assemblies are created with very robust components to meet specific applications. Large sliding doors with triple glass – ideal to minimize that drafty cold feeling in winter – need to have more robust rolling assemblies to ensure reasonably easy operation. Tip: Look for multi-point locking assemblies – especially on very tall doors – as those locking systems will help hold the door panels against the weather stripping. Take time to peruse some of the more informative websites. Better yet, visit at least one showroom to get the touch and feel of the latest options. The newer trends with more commercial pull bars and thumb controlled multi-point locks come with their own peculiarities. Tip: Consider the appropriate or special use of the better detail wood grain door panels, such as the Cherry pattern from Master Grain.

Then, amongst this minimalist and almost industrial detail – appears a newly invigorated use of natural wood detailing or highlighting. It’s fascinating to see the variety of ways in which designers and builders are incorporating wood details as very prominent components – not only on the outside, but also on the inside and smaller trim details. Tip: Take a close look at the types of window details that will best blend into or contrast those details – consider everything from exterior perimeter colours in Espresso to Pacific Coast Hemlock jamb extensions. Finally, “big glass” means big opportunities to win or lose in the energy game – tradeoffs which are much more effectively done at the design stage of the project. Ideally positioned windows with considerations of overhangs or deciduous trees can allow for fantastic benefits from passive solar gain. However, inappropriate application of glass options can also result in excess heating / cooling loads and considerable discomfort. Tip: Make sure your consultant or designer is very knowledgeable in the glass options that are available and how they might be optimized for your job.

Clear DIRECTION B Y K E L LY G R AY

F

rom small beginnings big things sometimes grow. This is the case with Fort Rouge Glass (FRG), Winnipeg-based glaziers that have made a name for themselves over 50 years as a company that offers some of the widest ranges of glass products and related services in the city. The company got its start back in the ‘60s when Ben and Muriel Berntt bought the old hardware store located at 555 Osborne. The business of repairing windows and screens soon had the couple relocating to larger premises around the corner on Morley. Working with their son Terry, the Berntt family saw business increase still further as their reputation for service grew. By the early ‘80s, Fort Rouge Plate and Auto Glass had moved into the present site further along Osborne at Don Ave. across from Winnipeg Transit’s south end bus garage. The new location offered considerably more room with 9000 sq. ft. of production and showroom space, and allowed the firm to further expand its service to the building trades. Now, some 30 years later, and under the guidance of Terry’s son and FRG president Brendan Berntt, gains in sales demand yet another move and a larger facility to accommodate the changing

needs of builders, home renovators and a public that has come to know Fort Rouge Glass as the company with a clear service oriented direction. “We will always be a part of the Fort Rouge community, but we have found that we have just outgrown this site,” says Brendan, pointing to traffic congestion and new condo developments that have made running a busy plate and auto glass business a challenge. He reports that this coming fall, they will open a new 16,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility at 55 Southlanding Drive just off McGillivray in the Southlanding Business Park. “We will be just three minutes from Costco, west on McGillivray. We are still in the south end and even our neighbourhood walk-in trade will find that we are just 10 minutes from our old location. The new site on McGillivray is ideal in both convenience and ease of use, as well as how it will give us greater ability to showcase our product range.”

88 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2017

Currently, Fort Rouge Glass offers a more compressed showroom than they would like. With the new facility, customers will be able to better discover the range of shower doors, staircases and railings, table tops, mirrors, backsplashes and custom options. Indeed, the new location will offer 2,500 sq. ft. of dedicated showroom that will allow customers to look, touch, and discuss products with Fort Rouge’s glazing specialists. “The environment will be more comfortable for everyone involved,” says Brendan, mentioning TV, a coffee bar and comfy furniture. “We want to create a good environment that will be welcoming to designers and architects, builders and home renovators that want to come in to touch and see products before making a commitment on a project. These days, there is a lot to see on the Internet, but you can’t make that real connection to products like you can in a bricks and mortar showroom,” he explains. “The industry is changing, and for us to take advantage of the opportunities, we must move

to bigger and better quarters,” says Fort Rouge Glass General Manager Michael Messervey. Here, Fort Rouge Glass Executive Sales Director Aleem Khan points out that more space was certainly required to expand the custom fabrication division. “We can really do it all from railings to shower doors and back painted glass. If you can imagine it, we can likely fabricate your vision into a glass product. However, to reach our potential, we needed more space. Now we have it.” The increased space means that staff will be able to pull an entire highway trailer into the building. “It’s more efficient and safer for our crew to bring containers into the building where we can crane loads off,” says Messervey, reporting that the new location will see a cohort of some 25 persons including office staff. “Some of our installers have been with us for 20 years. We don’t have a lot of turnover, and our staff has worked to develop specialized skill sets that are unique to the glass trade. When we send out a job, it’s our people that do the work. We don’t sub out to contractors. This way we can ensure the kind of quality that we have become known for over the years,” he says. “We grew our trade in Fort Rouge, but it’s our great service that really built the business, making us a leader in Winnipeg,” adds Brendan, mentioning that no matter how big they grow, Fort Rouge Plate and Auto Glass will remain a family business that is interested in building relationships with each customer. “We have always been approachable and this won’t change. I fully expect that when we open the new site this fall, someone will walk up and say, ‘I used to know your grandfather back when he fixed my windows at the shop on Osborne.’ We might be moving, but we will always remain a company with the values that we learned in over 50 years as a neighbourhood business.”

Tiles have long been the simplest form of art. Whether they were decorated individually or laid together to create an intricate design, they’ve been a form of expression in some of the world’s most public places, as well as bringing a touch of depth to residential applications. For over 100 years, Ames Tile & Stone has been a leader in the tile and stone industry, supplying leading-edge products to architects, designers, contractors, and retailers throughout Western Canada. Their Winnipeg showroom - a stunning space located at 970 Lorimer Boulevard - offers thousands of tiles and stone to look at, from thick two-centimetre tile to thin threemillimetre tile. The eternally curious and artistic Daniela Dallavalle is the passionate Italian designer behind Ames Tile & Stone’s creative expression series - Arte Pura - shown here. Dallavalle drew her inspiration for the collection from the intricacy of fabrics - the delicate harmony of linen threads finely laced amongst themselves; the artisanal embroideries that create an unexpected design. The result is subtle, refined details, which create the graceful rhythm of Arte Pura.

DESIGN&DECOR What’s Old is New

Much like fashion, lighting design evolves and changes over the years. However, as much as trends move forward, this season’s fixtures display characteristics of the past. “This ability to pair different eras opens us up to mixing finishes, from mirror finishes of all kinds to gold and brass tones and vintage bronzes,” explains Alison Demare BID, branch manager for Robinson Lighting Ltd. “It allows the designer to be unique in their pairings. It is also an exciting time as we can present such variety to the consumer.” The fixtures shown here are a perfect example of eras gone by - from 1920s art deco to mid-century modern - that can bring a blend of retro to modern homes. The Estelle’s delicate steel frame holds three cones finished in a rich oil-rubbed bronze, while the crystal facets beneath each cone act as diffusers, creating stunning prisms of light that soften the overall design; the celestial opaline glass globe - both a mix of modern and classic - set in an antique brass metal ring and gold chain link is also available in a vintage bronze; while a cartouche shaped mirror, trimmed in vintage silver and paired with a candle arm in contrasting navy, is the perfect marriage of dark and light, old and new. “Rules are no longer rules but more like guidelines that are looking to be broken,” she states. “Don’t be afraid to mix those finishes and embark on a journey of creativity. What was old is now new again.”

Taking it to the Edge

An interior fireplace is all about the flame. The visually stunning IgniteXL™ series from Dimplex, with its edge-to-edge glass and cleanface design, offers flawless panoramic views of its lifelike blaze. The patented Multi-Fire XD™ flame effect accurately reproduces a natural flame, while the diamond-like acrylic ice ember bed chunks sparkle with the reflected light. Users can also choose from a variety of brilliant colour themes or cycle through a range of colours using the prism mode, freezing on the hue of choice. Homeowners can also enjoy the ambiance of the flame with or without the heater. For those who want the warmth with their flame, the electric linear fireplace quickly warms a room by delivering maximum heat output for a predetermined amount of time. The patented Comfort$aver™ ceramic heating system uses 11 percent less energy than the leading quartz infrared heater by automatically adjusting fan speed and heater wattage to safely and precisely match the requirements of the room. And with no flame heat or emission, the glass front remains cool to the touch making these fireplaces a safe choice for homes.
