the agenda Welcome to the Autumn 2017 edition of Style Manitoba. Just as the leaves started turning colour and the evening air a little cooler, Manitoba’s homebuilders were putting the finishing touches on their showhomes in preparation for the Fall 2017 Parade of Homes. For those seeking a new home and / or community, this event should not be missed; likewise for consumers simply interested in checking out the latest home design and décor trends. On from Sept 9th to Oct 1st, the fall Parade provides the perfect opportunity for visitors to explore more than 130 home and condo designs in 42 different neighbourhoods throughout the city and beyond. Expect to be wowed by what the province’s top developers and homebuilders have to offer,

from topnotch homes and condos that demonstrate creativity and innovation, to the well-planned communities in which they’re located. Check out our Homes & Neighbourhoods section for a sampling of these exceptional sites. In fact, our fab home story this issue – Lasting Impression by Leigh Patterson - features a stunning showhome built by Hearth Homes. Situated in one of Winnipeg’s newest subdivisions (Taylor Farm, a residential community by Qualico Developments), it is one of the many display homes open throughout the Fall 2017 Parade. Other good reads this time around include an excellent travel piece by Andrea Ratuski, Aix-en-Provence – An Artist’s Paradise, along with profiles on a few of Winnipeg’s coolest

boutiques, shops, restaurants and galleries. And, of course, our regular sections, such as Outdoor Living, where readers will enjoy coverage on a lovely landscape skilfully designed and installed by the talented team at Silver Stone, along with a few other great ideas for outdoor spaces. Don’t forget to peruse the on-trend looks shown in our Kitchen & Bath Showcase, as well as in the Design & Décor section. Last, but not least, the new season for the arts is upon us – be sure to check the listings in Stepping Out for information on what’s happening around town from now until Style’s next issue comes out at the end of November. Enjoy!

ituated on a prime corner lot, this 1,773-square-foot showhome is one of the first ones you see when you arrive at Taylor Farm, Qualico Developments’ newest subdivision. Builder Hearth Homes designed the stunning home to maximize the location – and make a lasting first impression. Framed by beautiful landscaping, the home’s refined exterior hints at what’s inside. An insulated three-car garage with mission-style doors shows its practical nature, as does the low maintenance cultured stone and stucco façade. Attractive dark grey James Hardie Board panels add a sleek and contemporary vibe. Then, the home winks at you in greeting at the front entrance. Here, a gorgeous eight-foot high door inset with five glass panels is surrounded with more glass on the top and sides. Vertical pillar lights flank the front door so you can fully appreciate the height of the porch ceiling.

A beautiful floor-to-ceiling gas fireplace from Heat Savers serves as both a central focal point and a divider between the dining room and great room. The interlocking vinyl flooring installed by Curtis Carpets helps unify the entire main floor.

When you cross the threshold into the home, you end up in the light-filled foyer. A walkin closet contains wonderful details but is functional. Big 18” x 36”ceramic tiles on the entranceway floor make it feel much larger. The builder made another deliberate design choice to add a glassed-in staircase down to the lower level. This allows sunlight to penetrate to the lower level to make it more livable. In fact, abundant windows and lighting define the home’s entire aesthetic. It helps showcase wonderful funky details, like a stained maple “art niche” above the stairs. Curtis Carpets supplied and installed the luxurious interlocking vinyl plank flooring found throughout the main floor. Originally developed for commercial use, this attractive product resists water, warping and everyday wear and tear, even in the home’s busiest areas. Another advantage of this product is the large area it can cover without requiring transition strips. “It helps with uniformity and flow, which is especially important in an open concept space, and provides the kind of harmonious living that everyone’s keen on,” says Liam Milne, Hearth Homes’ design and marketing manager.

With Matix Lumber supplying all the building materials and All Fab providing the trusses and joists for this project, the home is as solid as it is stylish. Lots of windows allow fabulous views of the yard, while beckoning homeowners outside to the deck and patio areas installed by Windeck.

There’s no doubt that everyone would also be keen on the massive see-through gas fireplace from Heat Savers that serves as the main floor’s focal point, while pulling double duty as a room divider. Hearth Homes is well known for incorporating fireplaces into its home builds; Milne is excited about the new cultured stone product that surrounds this one from floor to ceiling. It’s the perfect frame for the black metal fireplace insert featuring stainless steel sticks set into a glittering base of crushed black glass. The

perfect conversation starter, the fireplace exudes warmth and style whether it’s on or off.

Stainless steel “sticks” inset into a crushed black glass base, make this gas fireplace from Heat Savers a conversation starter whether it’s on or off.

Even with the fireplace turned off, the entire main living space is “always going to be a warm, inviting Hearth Home,” says Milne. That’s due in part to the use of textured materials and colours: taupe, rich stained maple and creamy white. A teal blue accent wall along the great room and dining room breaks up the monochromatic palette with just the right splash of colour.

entertainment unit,” says Milne. A huge window on the other wall overlooks the abundant yard beyond and the patio just below. “We’ve designed this home so it gets natural light everywhere,” notes Milne. “Windows help you feel connected to the outside from every room – even from inside the garage.” Indeed, the many windows in this home allow fabulous views of the yard, while beckoning homeowners outside to the deck and patio areas installed by Windeck.

“We went simple on the feature wall in the great room with just a flat screen TV and a floating

Lovely outdoors views aside; indoors, the pièce de résistance is the kitchen. It’s a huge kitchen with tons of storage, including a closet-style pantry. Full extension drawers maximize space. The ceramic tile backsplash is contemporary, with a glossy textured surface. Kitchen prep and cleanup is quick and easy, thanks to the durable quartz countertop from Winnipeg Stonetops. Equipped with an induction range, range hood, dishwasher, and a refrigerator/freezer unit from Midland Appliances, this is a home chef ’s dream. All of the latest stainless steel appliances and on-trend materials aren’t considered just bells and whistles, however. In a Hearth Home, they’re thoughtfully considered for their longevity, form and function.

“The dining room is now mostly used for special occasions. At this kitchen table, kids can do their homework, you can roll dough, you can enjoy wine with friends,” says Milne. “But the number one thing is that people can face each other while eating – you’re not strangers sitting in a row at a diner.”

The kitchen is sleek and sophisticated with a single pendant light fixture from Robinson Lighting, quartz countertops from Winnipeg Stonetops, and stainless steel appliances from Midland Appliance.

Shining soft light onto the entire kitchen/dining space are multiple 6” pot lights and a single pendant fixture suspended from the tray ceiling. Light fixtures from Robinson Lighting were kept simple; their clean lines enhance, rather than interrupt the visual flow. “There’s so much going on in terms of texture already,” says Milne.

“We have a realistic way of thinking of how people might use a space,” notes Milne.

The home’s master bedroom is bright and airy, infused with daylight from the large windows. Along one wall, sliding barn doors open to reveal his and hers walk-in closets with customizable real wood shelving. Open slats allow airflow to combine the practicality of mesh with the beauty of wood.

For example, the built-in microwave is conveniently set at a reasonable height. The colossal central kitchen island has storage accessible from three sides, including from the dining room. Milne points out that even the casual eating table attached to the island reflects how more and more families use the kitchen.

Hearth Homes created a spa-like ensuite, replete with freestanding soaker tub and double vanity with tons of storage and counter space. The sliding glass barn door on the shower stall gives a clear view of the cultured marble walls with a quartz finish. Cork flooring is warm and luxuriously soft on bare feet, and a cute freeform light above the tub adds a touch of bling. AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 11

An additional 820 square feet of living space is found in the home’s lower level. It’s a space made for entertaining and living. Huge windows bring the light in during the day. Down here is a big rec room and home theatre, and another full bathroom. There’s room for two more bedrooms, plus storage. Discerning, tech-savvy homeowners will love that this home is entirely wired for sound and lighting, as well as for an alarm system that has roughed-in wiring for video surveillance cameras. Locally owned and operated Matix Lumber supplied all the building materials for the home, giving it the solid bones to stand the test of time. Designed with the everyday needs of their clients in mind, the Hearth Homes team has pulled out all the stops to build an exceptional showhome that’s sure to impress many visitors to this fall’s Parade of Homes.

Their success is built on the trust they cultivate daily through one-on-one consultations, active communication and daily onsite supervision as a home is being constructed. Hearth Homes uses webbased building software that allows the homeowner 24-hour access to every aspect of the build process. In neighbourhoods across the city, clients who own a home built by Hearth Homes form their own communities – drawn together by a mutual love and respect of their Hearth Homes experience. Hearth does a number of rebuilds with past clients, thanks to the care they received before, during and even long after their initial build. Your

Thoughts Thanks for running that great story on Oakbank in the Summer 2017 issue of Style Manitoba. We’ve been considering a move outside of Winnipeg, but worry about moving too far away from hospitals and other big city conveniences. As far as bedroom communities go, Oakbank certainly appears to have it all, including close proximity to the city. With a nice range of residential options in neighbourhoods old and new, along with a good variety of necessary services, it seems like a wonderful place to raise a family. We will definitely be checking out our options there. Brenda-Lee Cassin, Winnipeg

Fabulous coverage on Darcy Oake in your recent issue of Style! My wife and I were impressed with Darcy’s accomplishments, and applaud Darcy and the Oake family for their efforts to eventually open The Bruce Oake Recovery Centre. As so many families sadly know, a long-term treatment centre for adults suffering from drug and alcohol addiction is badly needed in Winnipeg. Hopefully the coverage in this editorial will provide greater awareness about the project and lead to others joining and supporting this worthy cause. Dwayne Hickman, Winnipeg

Loved the cover story on Darcy Oake in your last issue! Not only is he incredibly talented, Darcy and his family also demonstrate their humanitarian side and generosity of spirit through their quest to bring a recovery centre to Winnipeg. With so many families from all walks of life affected by the ravages of addiction, The Bruce Oake Recovery Centre is undoubtedly a much-needed facility in this city. I hope many will step up and support this initiative.

WSO features Harry Potter & the Philosopher’s Stone.

Stepping Out with Style MUSIC Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra - The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 70th anniversary this season and is kicking it off with an exquisite bang on September 16, welcoming renowned violin virtuoso Itzhak Pearlman for the Asper Family Opening Night Gala. This event promises to be a worldclass performance and signals the beginning of long-time WSO conductor Alexander Mickelthwate’s final season with the company before he moves on to a prestigious position as Music Director to the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra for their 2018/19 season. WSO officially celebrates the 70th birthday of the company on (Oct 13-14) by hosting veteran maestro Victor Fledbrill, who was with the WSO from 1958-1968, to co-conduct an unique experience which features cellist Yegor Dyachkov in a performance of Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No.3.” This is followed with an unexpected offering of “Seven Deadly Sins”

(Nov 3-4), where we observe the seven deadly sins inverted into virtues, featuring the soprano styling of Sarah Jo Kirsch, ethereal accompaniment by the Canadian Mennonite University Women’s Chorus and a rich vocal quartet. This vibrant cabaret-influenced satire promises to polarize our views on bourgeoisie morality set to the “Dante Symphony” by Franz Liszt. This is part of the Angels & Demons Autumn Festival; a delightful event which will preface “Seven Deadly Sins” with Beethoven, Chopin and a Sorrowful Song (Oct 27-28), Songs of Darkness and Light with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir (Oct 29), Natasha Paremski in recital (Oct 30), Frankenstein! (Oct 31), and an evening with the Winnipeg Chamber Music Society (Nov 1). Next up, relive the film that started it all as the WSO features Harry Potter & the Philosopher’s Stone. Watch the wand choose the wizard, trolls run amok and magic mirrors in high-definition while the WSO performs John Williams’ iconic score. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime

event as Harry, Ron, Hermione and all your favourite characters return to the screen and bewitch the world all over again. (Nov 25-26). Virtuosi Concerts - The best way to describe the autumn season from Virtuosi Concerts this year is dynamic, eclectic and thoughtful. They begin on September 9th with “From Tokyo to Montrose Street,” featuring the Montrose Trio. Intricately weaving piano, violin and cello, the Montrose Trio expertly guides the listener through selections from Haydn, Shostakovich and Arensky. Next up is The Canada 150 Project (Oct 14), an innovative and elaborate presentation by the Cheng2 Duo, aptly named, as they are a gifted pair of siblings from Ottawa. This unique multi-media experience explores Canada’s wild natural beauty and landscapes through extraordinary composition and video accompaniment that visualizes their captivating music. This refreshing exploration features different composers representing different aspects of our geography AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 19

This compelling offering commemorates Holocaust survivors, and renowned composers, Viktor Ullman and Simon Laks. Uplifting and joyous, one may anticipate a departure from grief to find hope, beauty and catharsis in this unforgettable evening. Opening on (Oct 22) with Grammy-nominated special guest saxophonist Jimmy Greene, an acclaimed Winnipeg musician and former U of M music professor, who presents an explosive and versatile performance titled Mission Statement: The Music of Jimmy Greene. The WJO are thrilled to continue their season (Nov 12-13) with a performance of Swingin’ the Blues, featuring Juno award-winning saxophonist PJ Perry with Nadia Douglas on vocals. Delectable Dining Unforgettable Taste Experience

N

eighbourhood bistros and lounges are popping up in and near residential communities throughout the city where one can indulge in great food and beverages, yet stay close to home. Zack Clarke and Matthew Swirsky, co-owners of Rae’s Bistro & Lounge, recently brought their new endeavour to fruition in the city’s north quadrant. This highly visible community gem is located at the corner of Lagimodiere (Highway 59) and Headmaster Row - a great stop for eats and spirits before or after a day of golf or an evening stroll at Kilcona Park or anytime at all. The minimalist décor, large windows and high ceilings lend a feeling of spaciousness. Comfortable, high top booths align the wall for more private conversation, while other table settings are available in the center for individual parties or larger gatherings. A small draped and elevated area lit with soft warm lights sets the stage apart, which also doubles as a dining spot when available. A grand lounge fills the opposite wall, shelved to the ceiling with spirits galore. With pull-up bar seats, the counter is flagged with popular on tap ales and trending keg brands, while above the bar, a big screen TV beckons sports fans. Aside from the regular menu, Rae’s signature ‘OFF THE WALL’ chalkboard is scripted with daily or weekly specials including appetizers, soup du jour, entrees, feature beers, charcuterie, desserts and craft cocktails. The chalkboard features are always changing based on the fresh, local ingredients available at the time, and speak to Chef Michael Ozero’s passion for food and drink. Along with being a seasoned chef, Ozero is also an award-winning beer-maker, and connoisseur of pairing food and beer. This is evident whether you are ordering from the menu or “Off The Wall.” The secret at this locale is the bountiful, mouthwatering feature and menu picks that make for an unforgettable taste experience. Our party starts with the Chorizo Dip, baked to perfection with flatbread that warms your insides, followed by Beet Chips served with caramelized onion and goat cheese - an adventure to the palate.

Pasta lovers will want to indulge in the Carbonara, with bacon, pancetta, portobello mushrooms, green peas, white wine and garlic, egg, pecorino (hard Italian cheese made from ewe’s milk) and fresh herbs. Or the Mediterranean Linguine, a lighter pasta fused with the flavour of Italian vegetables, topped with feta cheese. The Stuffed Chicken also delights – succulent roast chicken breast filled with sundried tomatoes, goat cheese and herbs, served with sweet balsamic tomato sauce, roasted red pepper, artichoke risotto and fresh market vegetables. Bring on the seafood fare! At Rae’s, the Artic Char sautéed in brown sugar and white wine along with the sides is a fine flavour of its own making. For the grand finale, patrons will enjoy choosing from the delectable dessert menu. Anyone for Irish Crème Brule, Pineapple Upside Down Cake or Honey Berganno Panna Cotta? At Rae’s, Sundays are for Prime Rib and Mondays feature Prime Rib sandwiches. And don’t miss the ever- popular Wine Wednesdays, when bottles are half price. Check out their Facebook page for times, menu picks, and pictures that are guaranteed to pique your appetite. As their Facebook page states; “Food and drink is a never ending experience. Let’s explore together.” All in all, an excellent dining experience.

The owner-operators of Perfect Pairs Giselle and Mike Deneka - want you to know they are Winnipeg’s ‘Mom and Pop’ stop for “the ultimate experience in oil and vinegar.” This specialty store prides itself on being family oriented since opening November 12, 2015, making it their quest to bring friends and families back into the kitchen.

“We believe in supporting local business whenever we can,” Giselle points out. The Denekas fell in love with the products, not the concept of the store. There are over 800 stores that offer this product line in North America and they are the only store in Manitoba that does.

“We want to teach families and friends they can have a great meal at home and have fun cooking it,” Giselle explains.

One cannot help but want to indulge in what Perfect Pairs has to offer. But first, let the owners guide you through a custom “perfect pairing” process made to your taste.

And that’s exactly what they do out of their location at Unit C - 2450 Main St. The magic happens as soon as you enter the store. The atmosphere is palpable. Wooden shelves line the walls and center of the store with stately stainless steel fustis (containers that keep the light, moisture and air out) that house the oils and vinegars.

“First we find out your needs, then guide you through the pairing and educate you at the same time,” explains Giselle. This all takes place at the tasting bar, which features over 55 different flavours of olive oils and balsamic vinegars with fresh bread for dipping.

The EVOO fustis have a crushed date, showing when the olives were processed, as olive oil loses its quality after 12-14 months. These oils are selected from around the world and according to their harvest times from Portugal, Greece, and Spain, to name a few. The flavoured oils are either fused with flavour in processing, or infused, which means adding the flavour after. Freshness is essential with the EVOO, while the flavoured oils and premium balsamic vinegars from Modena, Italy can be stored for longer periods of time. The store also features both Manitoba sourced and Canadian-based products such as pasta, rubs, dips, mustard, and stoneware for dipping, and even handmade soaps.

If that’s not enough, they offer private tasting parties and BBQ classes, encouraging a group of family and friends to come together to learn how to incorporate their products into everyday cooking. Gift baskets or gift crates comprised of extra virgin olive oil, traditional balsamic vinegar (aged 18 years) and a dipping plate are available. Additionally, Perfect Pairs offers a fresh twist on fundraising with their premium products. Perfect Pairs is celebrating their second anniversary on November 18, 2017 - an opportune time to meet the owners and taste the great products sold at their store. For more information, visit the website at www.perfectpairs.ca or follow them on Facebook or Instagram.

Now is the best time to clean the oven. Even the stove exhaust vents should be cleaned to remove greasy buildup. Having a stove and oven that is sparkling clean will make baking and preparing holiday dinners much more pleasant.

2. Register Vents

To ensure your heating system operates as efficiently as possible, remove all register vents and vacuum inside them. Take vents outdoors and rinse them lightly with a garden hose or place them in a sink with warm soapy water. Rinse and allow them to dry completely before replacing them. Furnace filters should be replaced at the same time.

3. Carpet & Upholstery

Carpets and upholstery can hold in allergens such as dust mites that could ultimately weaken your immune system. With cold and flu season looming, now is the time to deep clean carpets and make breathing easier.

4. Ceiling Fans & Fixtures

Ceiling fans are not just useful during the summer. Reversing their direction will push warm air downward and make your home easier to heat. Before switching direction, wipe fan blades, remove and wash globes, and dust light bulbs. This will allow for brighter light, which is very important during the dark days of winter.

5. Closets

Autumn is a good time to eliminate closet clutter. Aside from getting rid of clothing, wipe down doors, shelves, and baseboards, and vacuum the floor inside. Not only will this ensure a healthier home, it will also make room for bulky winter items that may have been stored away during the warmer months.

6. Interior/Exterior Windows & Gutters

The winter season will seem even longer if you have to look through dirty windows. And don’t forget about clearing the gutters. Schedule a professional to handle these jobs so you can focus on things you enjoy

A World Away but Here to Stay

f you seek that one unique piece of clothing or accessory from a world away but would actually like to try it on, feel it and connect to it…. look no further. Global Connections, situated on the second floor of the Johnston Terminal at the historic Forks Market, offers international, ethnic- inspired clothing and accessories along with a wide array of home décor items. Opened in 1993, the store originally offered more of a home décor and textiles selection. But a change of hands in 1997 to Barry McCort and wife Christine Thomas prompted an evolution in merchandise, with clothing and accessories (scarves, hats, purses and jewellery) added into the mix. Today, complementing the clothing and accessories, an eclectic selection of imported home décor items are displayed throughout the store, creating a shopping experience with international flair. The ever-popular Putumayo music playing in the background adds to the ambience.

“The bulk of Global Connections clothing and almost all the home décor products are fair trade items,” McCort explains, adding that they import items from all over the world, such as India, Morocco, Africa and Indonesia, to name a few. “We operate under fair trade principles whenever possible, actively seeking products both in Canada and overseas to provide customers with new and interesting items.”

The store’s ever-changing collection of imported items and diverse selection of clothing and jewellery appeals to teenagers and adults alike, from a wide variety of hemp backpacks from Nepal to a large selection of bags and purses handmade in Thailand.

“The artisans of these beads are always creating and also retiring beads from their inventory, so there is an ever-changing selection,” conveys McCort, adding that Global Connections is the exclusive retailer for Trollbeads in Manitoba. “They have hundreds of Italian glass Murano beads, semi precious stone beads and sterling silver beads, along with spacer beads to keep the bracelets in place. Trollbeads are very popular, made in a socially responsible manner and are more vintage and earthy, which is harmonious with the store’s atmosphere.”

The store also carries a plethora of tumbled stones and crystals, with books on their healing properties for the more insightful shopper. With requests for more tarot cards on the rise, they now carry more than 200 different titles for customers to choose from, with companion books on the teachings of tarot card reading. Customers also love the unique greeting cards offered here, including handmade cards from South Africa. Global Connections also maintains a selection of certified fair trade chocolate, coffee and sugar.

Some new additions at the store include the solid sterling silver neck bangle and even a tiara for brides seeking a unique look. A collection of handmade mosaic glass lamps and a selection of unique leather and wool purses have also recently arrived. Sixty different singing bowls are displayed among the semi precious stones, pendulums, carved stone pyramids and animal carvings found throughout the store. Recently, Global Connections received a shipment of Mexican items, including amazing painted ceramic skulls, and matching skull mugs.

The jewellery featured here is also popular with customers, particularly the Trollbead line. Trollbeads were created in Demark in 1976 and were the first line of jewellery where one can create their very own bracelet or necklace with individual beads and change them as desired.

“All these unique imported goods are what attracts customers to Global Connections. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, always doing our best to locate exceptional and exquisite imported goods that our customers desire,” McCort shares.

The Fair Trade principle also provides their customers with a ‘global connection’ in supporting artisans from all over the world, while still finding that one of a kind piece to wear or showcase.

Fall Into texture To Perm or not to perm? Why not try a perm to give yourself a change? Perming is still a very viable option for most hair types; colour treated and highlighted hair included. It does not need to look like a perm if done with a larger rod size, the better perm formulas that are available now and the correct design wrap of the rods. A consultation is needed to determine if you are a good candidate for a perm. The professionals at rituals in hair and skin will offer good advice on maintenance, styling and finishing techniques, and of course, the right home maintenance products. A diffuser for your blow-dryer may be a good addition, although air-drying is usually a great way to go. After all, low maintenance is the goal!

Today’s fashion trends have noticeably reinvented the ‘80s. Crimping and braiding of all kinds have crept back in style. This model’s super fine hair gets the uplift by crimping in texture and volume. Her “avant-garde” style is a simple look you can achieve by both setting with small braids and releasing, or by using a crimping iron. This texture looks great styled down or is excellent for re-braiding into big Dutch braids and crowns or styling up for voluminous topknots, space buns, or pulled back into a low glamourous chignon. There’s no one quite like Hero, or at least that’s what she believes. Hero is the irrepressible narrator and outspoken young star of this terrific, sharp coming-of-age novel by Terry Griggs. Born in a dusty Ontario town, Hero makes it her business to know everyone else’s. The writing crackles with electricity as Hero’s words get the better of her. Hero might not be as sure of things as she thinks she is, but it’s a wild and fun trip looking at the world through her eyes.

The Water Beetles (Goose Lane) by Michael Kaan

A remarkably assured debut novel by Winnipeg writer Michael Kaan. Chung-Man is 12 years old and living a comfortable existence with his family in 1940’s Hong Kong, when the World War brings the invading Japanese army literally to their doorstep. He flees with his siblings but peace and safety are difficult to recover. Based in part on the wartime experiences of the author’s father, this is a sensitive and elegantly written story that compels the reader to keep turning pages.

It’s 1961, it’s summer, and Corinne is restless. A part-time model and a “looker,” Corinne is also a single mother, and her 12-year old son Jasper is the narrator of this strikingly original road novel. Bored with her life in Winnipeg, Corinne packs her son and what little she owns in her new Corvair. Jasper, though, longs for the security he had back home. Robert Everett-Green skilfully depicts their complicated relationship - Corrine is not really motherhood material - as well as Jasper’s own stabs at independence.

The Clothesline Swing (Nightwood) by Ahman Danny Ramadan

How can memories shape existence? The narrator and his lover leave Syria during the civil war when life is especially dangerous for two gay men, and find another home in Vancouver, but Damascus remains in their hearts. Now, as his lover is dying, and Death a very real visitor, the narrator tells tales of their old lives. Ahmad Danny Ramadan, himself a Syrian refugee, has written a moving, romantic, heartbreaking, and sometimes even magical, debut novel. 34 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2017

ROGER WATERS Is this the Life We Really Want?

Eye Exams by Dr. Nadine Shelton Services en français e português

(Sony) Ideas always outshouted tunes for Roger Waters, beginning with his Pink Floyd swansong, The Final Cut, and continuing through his first three solo records. He hasn’t mellowed at 73. Is this the Life We Really Want finds him railing again at totalitarianism, morally bankrupt politicians and a decayed society where “there’s nothing but screams in the field of dreams,” and the language warning is well earned, but now he meets listeners halfway with warmer melodies, better songs and better singing. Arrangements by David Campbell and producer Nigel Goodrich that make keen use of deep, swelling strings and piano. The flinty guitar and throbbing bass that open “Picture That” are the most obvious acknowledgment of Animals, the Pink Floyd album where Waters turned his sardonic eyes to the world, but instead of ferocious lead guitar there are keyboards to ease the rage, and gentler songs to close. He wants to engage us; it’s difficult to resist.

THE BEACH BOYS 1967 – Sunshine Tomorrow (Capitol) Endless summer continues with the release of more Beach Boys songs from the vault. This time it isn’t another attempt to sell Pet Sounds, but an expanded view of 1967’s Wild Honey. It’s an interesting choice. For most of the year previous, Brian Wilson toiled over Smile, only to consign it to studio shelves and mythology. Soon after that, however, it was time for direct music, with the band playing together on record for the first time in years and brother Carl Wilson discovering his soul chops. The key track, really, is a cover of Stevie Wonder, with the excitable Carl declaiming “I Was Made to Love Her” while the gang harmonizes around the piano. “Darlin’” and “Here Comes the Night” followed, urgent and irresistible, and there was mellow simplicity to temper giddy joy. Stretching this half-hour of music across 160 minutes via rehearsal takes and alternate mixes overstates its boyish charms, and the previously unreleased live music is undemonstrative, but among the footnotes there are revelations – early takes of the mysterious “Cool, Cool Water” and “Surf ’s Up,” and unadorned backing tracks from Smiley Smile that reveal the subliminal underpinnings to those immaculate constructions.

CAN Singles (Mute) Singles never figured prominently in Germany’s experimental rock of the ‘70s, and it’s difficult to judge from this collection how much they mattered to the singularly intuitive Can. The parched thump of “Soul Desert” is no one’s idea of a hit single, but it’s followed immediately by the sublime “She Brings the Rain,” with original vocalist Malcolm Mooney subdued and seductive over Michael Karoli’s cool jazz guitar. Such contrast electrifies this compilation, with the sinister Spoon leading to the twilight shuffle of Shikako Maru Ten, the tricky violin/ keyboard funk of Dizzy Dizzy and the relentless Mushroom. Fanatics will be startled, and the curious, magnetized.

RUGS WITH A HUMAN TOUCH

Renowned for their Fair Trade mandate, Ten Thousand Villages recently celebrated its 71st year in operation. The organization had its humble beginning in 1946, when Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) volunteer Edna Ruth Byler purchased handmade artisan goods from disadvantaged women in the countries she served and brought them back home to sell to family and friends – all out of her basement! Byler’s original quest was to create hope and prosperity for the world’s poor by purchasing and then reselling these handcrafted items. Little did she know that her simple concept would one day parlay into a global fair trade movement. Today, there are many stores across Canada and the USA, all of which are nonprofit. Although most of us are familiar with Ten Thousand Villages and frequent the stores for those one of a kind artisan gifts, there is a best kept secret offered at all North American locations - the rug division. Ten Thousand Villages’ Canadian rug division started in the mid 1990s, when they began

carrying rugs from a Pakistan job creation program called BUNYAAD (meaning foundation in Urdu, Pakistan’s national language). Started in Pakistan in the 1960s, the BUNYAAD Rug Program was revolutionary, allowing families to remain in their villages and work from home as opposed to leaving for work in a nearby city. This program provides a healthier quality of life for the artisans it employs, fostering consistency, stability, and most important, self-sufficiency. Fair Trade equals quality, as artisans can put their focus entirely on their work, good materials and a superior product, knowing they receive a fair wage. These exceptional rugs are the hallmark of distinction, ethnicity and uniqueness; each comes with its own tag, on which a complete history of its making is recorded. A story attached to every rug, if you will. Every artisan in the village has their own loom, making it easier for them to manage their own work schedules; usually two hours in the morning, two hours in the afternoon and two hours in the evening

on the loom by the mother or father, leaving opportunity to make their own routine around family life. Each rug is unique, brought to life with personal inspirations from the various family members. There are always new designs and concepts being showcased. All rugs are made from 100% wool on either a cotton or wool warp, while some pieces also incorporate silk. Rug sizes range from 2’x3’ to 10’x14’ plus a wide range of runners up to 13 feet long. It takes four to five people working five to six hours a day one year and two months to complete a rug that is over 500 knots per square inch. That’s over 7.7 million knots tied individually by hand! When you purchase one of these rugs, you are supporting the life, education and culture in Pakistan. Ten Thousand Villages offers three year-round rug stores with more than 40 rug events across Canada and the United States with an extensive inventory. Winnipeg is the center for the travelling rug program in Canada, which means at certain times of the year, the entire travelling rug inventory is in the city, offering a wonderful selection to consumers. (But keep in mind that they do carry rugs all year long). The anchor store for the travelling rugs in Winnipeg is at 134 Plaza Drive (off Pembina Hwy). The annual rug event will be held Nov.10 – 25th this year. Yousaf Chaman of the BUNYAAD Rug program shared with Style what he would like people to know about these rugs: “Artisans pour their heart and soul into every rug. Their time and creativity equals fair trade, the rug prices are low and the quality is high. The rugs are durable, stain resistant, made from high quality natural materials and should be used to live on. They are offered nowhere else. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.” For more information visit winnipeg.plaza@ villages.ca.

innipeggers looking to turn blank walls into points of interest and sites of beauty have been looking to Woodlands Gallery since the early 1980s. The gallery is now home to some 30 Canadian artists. This unique repertoire of artists, along with a welcoming atmosphere, and professional personalized service, has made Woodlands Gallery one of Manitoba’s best-known locations for artwork to adorn your interior spaces. Located on Academy Road, Woodlands offers a range of services, from custom framing to trials on approval and art consultation. According to director Jennifer DeLury, pieces from the gallery typically run between $500 and $5000. “We offer an engaging selection of artwork by emerging and established artists,” she says, noting that people will find styles influenced from high realism and Impressionism to abstraction.

DeLury reports that she started managing the gallery some 17 years ago and relocated to its current site at 535 Academy Road in 2005. The current location is an ideal exhibition centre, with the gallery holding regular events to showcase its talented stable of skilled artists. A great case in point is the show slated to run this September 22 to October 7, 2017.

She reports being deeply influenced by her surroundings such as vast prairies, lush forests, and colourful valleys that all serve as an inspiration for her paintings. Kucheravy made her debut at Woodlands Gallery last September as part of their inaugural SAP (Supplementary Artists Program) showcasing contemporary emerging Manitoba artists for a limited engagement. Melissa Jean, represented by the gallery since 2010, paints out of her studio in Kenora, Ontario. Growing up in mid and western Canada, Jean’s work, also held in many private and corporate collections, reveals details in nature that others might take for granted. Looking to get a little more art in your life? Pencil in Friday, September 22nd from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, when Woodlands Gallery will present the opening reception of The Lake: A Closer Look at Lake of the Woods and Shoal Lake. Artists Tracey Kucheravy and Melissa Jean will be in attendance. Visit www.woodlandsgallery.com for more information.

Titled The Lake: A Closer Look at Lake of the Woods and Shoal Lake, the September 22 to October 7 curated group show features the inspired work of local artists Tracey Kucheravy and Melissa Jean, as well as selected pieces by west coast artists Cameron Bird and Rick Bond. “Instinctively, we sense that being near water makes us healthier and happier; it reduces stress and brings us peace. We long for the solace of where water meets land and sky, and these paintings reflect that same attractive and restorative tranquility,” says DeLury about the coming show. Both featured artists are working close to their subject matter. Tracey Kucheravy is an emerging artist originally from Saskatchewan who

Aix-en-Provence – An Artist’s Paradise

W

as it the brilliant Provençal light? The multiple shades of ochre? Or the imposing Montagne Sainte-Victoire itself? Whichever it was, painter Paul Cézanne spent most of his life in Aix-en-Provence and immortalized the craggy mountain that looms east of the town countless times.

BY ANDREA RATUSKI PHOTOGRAPHY JIM HISCOTT

Today, as we make our way along the splendid Cours Mirabeau - the broad main street, a stroller’s paradise lined with plane trees - we admire the elegant hôtels particuliers, beautiful mansions, all constructed of the luminous golden sandstone mined in nearby Bibémus. Perhaps it was this quarry, which Cézanne also painted, that inspired his audacious art, considered a precursor to cubism, and a direct influence on Picasso and Braque.

Along the Cours and at every turn, we come upon a fountain. There are 75 in all, as Aix is considered a city of water. The largest, at the top of the Cours, is known as La Rotonde, with three marble statues representing Justice, the Arts and Agriculture. But the most beautiful has to be la Fontaine des Quatre-Dauphins, with four dolphins playfully spouting water, a baroque fountain designed by Jean-Claude Rambot in 1667. More than 2000 years ago, the Romans discovered a thermal spring, which still flows today.

They settled here, calling it Aquae Sextiae, the waters of the Roman consul Sextius.

Place d’Albertas with its elegant fountain and cobbled stones.

Few vestiges of the Roman settlement remain in Aix proper, but in the magnificent SaintSauveur Cathedral in the oldest part of Aix, the fifth-century Carolingian baptistery features several glorious Roman marble columns. The church is otherwise a curious, but impressive, amalgam of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles, reflecting various periods of construction.

Place Richelme, in the heart of the old town, comes alive each morning with a vibrant market of fruits, vegetables, fish, fowl and goat cheese. We quickly identify the special local producers: Chez Céline, for her incredible variety of vegetables, and Dulce, whose stand is overflowing with lettuces and produce from her nearby farm. We can barely wait to get back to our apartment to turn them into lunch.

A highlight is Nicolas Froment’s tryptich, Mary in the Burning Bush, commissioned by King René in 1475. Also the beautiful cloisters.

a bunch of grapes, as he also promoted wine production in the region (for which the locals – and today’s tourists - are forever grateful).

In the Middle Ages, Aix was the capital of Provence, and Roi René of Anjou, known as the Good King René, was one of the last counts to rule, ushering in Aix’s golden age.

The university was founded in 1409 by René’s father, Louis II of Anjou, and Aix is still a lively university town with 35,000 students animating its streets and cafés night and day.

An art lover and poet himself, he encouraged all forms of the arts, and his statue at the end of the Cours Mirabeau portrays him holding

All of the arts continue to thrive today. Music lovers flock to the prestigious summer opera festival and the more recent Easter music festival. Ballet Preljocaj at the ultra-modern Pavillon Noir satisfies the desire for contemporary dance. Near the statue of King René is Aix’s most legendary café, Les Deux Garçons, where Cézanne and his friend, the writer Emile Zola, hung out with other artists and intellectuals in the late 19th Century. The exquisite interior remains exactly as it was when it was built in 1792. North of the Cours Mirabeau is Vieil Aix, the old town, an intricate maze of streets where we love to stroll leisurely and get hopelessly lost, exploring architectural gems like the

40 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2017

A few steps north is the animated Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, again in that shimmering golden sandstone, dominated by the Tour de l’Horloge, an exquisite clock tower adjoining the Town Hall. On the south side is the post office, the former grain market, whose face displays an allegory of the Rhône and Durance rivers, the Rhône represented by an old man, the Durance by the goddess Sybille, with la Durance dangling a leg, provocatively. A flower market brightens up the square Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays when the whole market doubles in size and spreads through

many other streets of the old town and onto the Cours Mirabeau. Down on Rue Mignet we join the long lineup of people anxious to sample the creative breads of Farinoman Fou, the crazy baker from Québec, Benoit Fradette, who bakes his breads from ancient grains, and infuses a whole lot of love. Still hungry? Hidden in a tiny, luminous courtyard behind the Cours Marabeau is one of Aix’s hottest restaurants today, le Côté Cour, where Chef Ronan Kerner, who placed fourth in France’s “Top Chef,” attracts a fashionable, contemporary crowd. Along a back road is another gem, Restaurant Mickaël Féval, featuring a young chef who just received his first Michelin star. Try his rouget barbet (red mullet) with artichokes. It’s amazing what chef Olivier Scola whips up in his tiny multi-leveled Ze Bistro, just around the corner and up the hill. Imagine a bone marrow cream topped with the first asparagus and fava beans of the season. Another newcomer on the scene is PointeNoire, on the lively Place des Tanneurs, where we share sautéed squid in its ink with carbonara flavours, fried panisse (chickpea cake) with spiced yogurt and crab ravioli with a purée of celery root. In a spacious square in the heart of Aix’s old town, when the sun starts to set, the Place Forum des Cardeurs really comes to life. At Le Poivre d’Âne, ingredients get exotic, with a tartare of langoustines enhanced by vanilla and fleur de sel from Mauritius. South of the Cours Mirabeau is the Quartier Mazarin, which was established in the 17th and 18th centuries, when wealthy aristocrats built their impressive mansions with the famous local golden stone. Our favourite doorway features two long-suffering atlantes, holding

up the wrought-iron balcony at the sumptuous Hôtel Maurel de Pontevès. In contrast to the Old Town, the Mazarin district is constructed on a grid plan; so it’s easy to find Aix’s main art gallery, the Musée Granet. It is surprising that so few paintings of Cézanne are on display here; in his day, Cézanne’s work was not appreciated by locals, considered too avant-garde. But the new addition in the former White Penitents’ Chapel, the collection of Jean Planque, features many fine works of Monet, Van Gogh, Dufy, Braque, Picasso, and more Cézanne. Nearby is a gorgeous, fully restored 18th century mansion, a new highlight in Aix, the Caumont Centre d’Art. After viewing the temporary exhibit, it is worthwhile to watch the film about Cézanne, visit the rest of the mansion, and perhaps relax in the spacious garden with a cup of tea.

Lovers of Cézanne will enjoy a brisk hike (or a bus ride) up to his atelier, which is basically a snapshot of where and how he worked during his last years, from 1902 to 1906. While there are no actual works of art there, just some examples on a video screen, one can truly feel the presence of the painter in this space. All of his implements are on view, just as he left them, including his easels, cloaks, hats, brush boxes, as well as old tables holding an olive pot, some skulls, a statue of cupid and lots of fruit (replaced regularly). These were the original objects he painted as he explored colour, shapes and perspective. The guided tour is excellent. The visit could include yet another worthwhile 15-minute walk up to the spot where Cézanne could actually see - and paint - Sainte-Victoire. He did it with 20 kg of equipment on his back. Examples of the works he painted are placed strategically on the hillside, so you can appreciate what he admired in his day. Back in town, a little map will guide you on a footpath to explore Cézanne’s Aix, each spot marked with a “C” stamp on the pavement. Along the way are numerous enticing design and decoration shops and galleries. Further afield, lovers of contemporary art might visit the Fondation Vasarely, dedicated to this artist who was a practitioner of geometrical abstraction and kinetic art. Back on the Cours Mirabeau, craving a sweet reward, we pop into Pâtisserie Béchard for the prized confection of Aix - the boat-shaped calisson - one of the famous treize desserts the Provençals enjoy on Christmas Eve. It’s made of preserved melon and almond paste, on a wafer made of communion paper - and we don’t feel the least bit guilty for the indulgence. Then, it’s a glass of rosé at a tiny table at our favourite haunt along the Cours Mirabeau, Le Grillon, under a red canopy, to watch the people go by and admire that exquisite golden stone glowing in the setting sun. Growing through phases B Y L E I G H PAT T E R S O N PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

Kyle Thibeault, owner of Silver Stone Landscaping, has just spent the day at this Austin, Manitoba property. He and his crew planted 60 trees on this day alone. By year’s end, he estimates they’ll have planted 120 deciduous trees and evergreens. And they won’t be done yet. Not by a long shot. This yard is located on a much larger property – a farm, actually – and so it needed to fit in with its surroundings as well as with the large, new home overlooking it. That’s why the homeowners enlisted Silver Stone to come up with a plan that would see their vision for the yard emerge in stages. “We met with the clients in fall of 2014 and spent the winter planning out the yard,” says Thibeault. “We began the project in 2015, starting with stonework. We hit the ground running.” 44 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2017

After grading and sculpting the muddy yard to make a solid, attractive base, the Silver Stone crew installed walkways using large flagstone pavers set into a crushed black granite base. The walkways link all the outdoor living areas, running from the front of the home and wrapping around to the backyard.

OUTDOORL I V I N G

Also in the first year, Silver Stone used Barkman Verona and Roman Circle stone pavers to define various spaces, including the large patio that’s accessed from the home’s walkout basement. As well, they built all the retaining walls using Barkman Rosetta Outcropping blocks, specifically chosen for this purpose. “This is a very big house so we needed a larger stone to achieve a balanced look to the yard,” says Thibeault. In 2016, the crew moved on to build Barkman Dimensional steps to the hot tub area, which is enclosed in more of the Rosetta Outcropping stone. Strategically placed natural black granite boulders were added as accents in the garden beds. Some boulders are artfully incorporated into the retaining walls and step areas for some visual interest. Along with the hot tub, other outdoor living spaces are defined by hardscaping, like the patio/firepit area, a small circular lounge patio and an outdoor fireplace. All are made cozy by the surrounding stonework and plantings. The team also installed a large wood pergola above the main patio area to make a grand entranceway to the spectacular yard. The homeowner desired a large water feature and Silver Stone delivered, with a waterfall complete with its own seating area. Constructed of rusty granite boulders reminiscent of the Whiteshell, water flows down and back up again via a self-contained pond-less system. The water splits into two streams and spills down a 6’ grade change. The sounds of the flowing, splashing water can be enjoyed from anywhere in the yard. To achieve a naturalized look, the Silver Stone team planted trees…lots of them. Varieties of spruce, cedar, coniferous, and deciduous trees like Amur cherry. Garden beds are planted with 150 different shrubs, perennials and grasses. These were all selected to ensure colour and texture all year round. There’s a decent amount of lawn that serves to anchor the yard, and an irrigation system keeps it healthy. Extensive landscape lighting helps extend the family’s enjoyment of their yard into the evening hours. But wait, there’s more. This yard’s not done yet. “There’s more phases yet to come,” says Thibeault. So, when the homeowners are ready to move on to their next planned landscaping project here, the Silver Stone team will be more than up for the challenge. AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 45

California dreamin’ By Leigh Patterson Clean. Simple. Beautiful. Laid back. Low maintenance. These homeowners were looking for a California vibe when they chose Prelude Landscaping to create their open-air living room. They chose right. Prelude Landscaping CEO Pedro Gomes and his team excel in designing and developing beautiful outdoor spaces. “Our client wanted a California/Napa Valley look, specifically with white stone,” says Gomes. The team removed an existing wood deck and built a two-tier patio using Barkman Travertine slabs for an upscale, luxurious look. They used polymeric sand to fill in the spaces between the slabs, to prevent weeds and deter insects. A hot tub was installed on the upper tier, while the spacious lower level patio is reserved for eating, entertaining and lounging. The clients desired a particular white stone to be used for the short pillars. In his search for the perfect natural stone for the project, Gomes found a supplier in Wisconsin. “That was a game-changer,” says Gomes. “We had to go a bit further to get our clients the product

anitoba’s homebuilders are celebrating. Indeed, this year marks 80 years since the group formed what is Canada’s oldest homebuilders’ association. Not only is the MHBA (Manitoba Home Builders Association) the country’s longest running residential construction trade group, it is also the organizer of Canada’s largest collective display of new homes. This year the province’s new home builders will offer more than 130 sites in 42 neighbourhoods with its Fall Parade of Homes (September 9th to October 1, 2017). “The Parade is a unique opportunity for both builder and new home buyer,” says

Lanny McInnes MHBA President and CEO

MHBA President and CEO, Lanny McInnes, a Winnipegger who took on the job this past April coming over from a role as the head of Prairie Region Government Relations with the Retail Council of Canada. He reports that the Parade is now more visitable, thanks to enhanced social media interaction where new home buyers can check out Facebook and Twitter for up-to-the minute descriptions, locations and general information on any of the 133 homes at this year’s event. “With 42 communities present in the Parade, homebuyers can more easily plan and participate, thanks to digital media. This means less driving and more viewing,” he says, noting that a real benefit to the Parade is the ability to more fully experience a showhome’s leading edge design and fashion forward attributes. “Why just read about open concept living when you can see it for yourself in a range of colour palettes, materials and configurations on site? The Parade is the best way to check out all the latest new home designs in a format that makes it easy,” says McInnes, adding that each home in the Parade will be profiled on MHBA’s social media feeds during the event.

The Parade of Homes is a twice a year event. Spring 2017 saw builders compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in 26 categories during the Parade at that time. McInnes suggests that the fall show is no different. “There are over 40 builders competing and this includes a couple of new participants. We will announce the winners at the October Gala,” he says, noting that the award winners will also be profiled through social media (See www.homebuilders. mb.ca for more information). “The Fall Parade of Homes is the biggest and best opportunity to get up close and personal with the province’s top homebuilders and their cutting edge designs. Make a plan, use the interactive sites that offer maps, home profiles and information on builders and be prepared to ask questions to the on-site personnel. In some cases, participants might be able to view eight or nine different builders who are displaying along a single block in a community. There is a lot to learn and a lot to see at the Parade,” concludes McInnes, inviting members of the public to visit www.homebuilders.mb.ca for more information on site locations and social media addresses. See you at the Parade!

Building Momentum Continues BY DONNA MINKUS

Gathering place for neighbourhoods meeting expectations

L

ocated in the heart of the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater, Bridgwater Centre continues to evolve as a natural gathering place for residents from all the neighbourhoods. Extra-wide sidewalks accommodate pedestrian traffic along Centre Street, says Jaime Patrick, Director, Land Development, Manitoba Housing & Renewal Corporation. “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to access the local businesses, retailers and offices along Centre Street.” Patrick says the next stage of development will see parking at the rear of buildings. “This will encourage pedestrian movement along Centre Street where storefront access will be.” There are 10 parcels remaining in Bridgwater Centre to be purchased and developed, she notes, adding that they all must meet strict architectural design and specifications so they have the same visual appeal. The vision for the area is elegant mixed-use buildings to house commercial, residential, retail and office space, encouraging a multi-use area and walkability. Commercial growth continues at Bridgwater Centre, Patrick points out. Save On Foods opened last November and Manitoba Liquor in December. RBC, Bank of Montreal, Wyatt Insurance, Elite Physio, Ultra Cuts and Veterinary Clinic, Aveda Salon, Dominos Pizza and Tim Hortons all opened early this year. Shoppers Drug Mart is expected to open in 2018.

“We are hoping to add to the mix, and plans include a fitness facility and restaurants, as well as a medical office,” she adds. Residential development also continues in Bridgwater Centre. Two single-family attached homes will be featured in the Fall 2017 Parade of Homes. The showhomes are by Hilton Homes and A&S Homes. The A&S Homes showhome is a spectacular 1,467 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 ½ bath layout, located at 305 Park West Drive. The Aqua Homes project offers exceptional twostorey townhomes, according to Matthew Yan, Sales Manager, A&S Homes. “Each home is built with the highest standards in mind, boasting style and functionality - the perfect combination for your dream home,” he says. The home’s exterior features stone and wood detailing, a private deck and parking at the rear. The open layout concept and large great room features a custom entertainment centre and tiled fireplace. The executive kitchen has a large island with bar, quartz countertops, tiled back splash and maple cabinetry. Laminate floors throughout complement the chrome spindle railings. The bedroom level features a large master with 3-piece ensuite and walk-in closet, plus a very large second and third bedroom with full bath.

“The combined efforts of experienced architects working with award winning designers, as well as feedback from past townhome purchasers, have led to floor plans that are functional, stylish and very livable,” Yan says. “These units are priced to sell.” With six blocks of completed homes at Park West Blvd and Park East Blvd, Hilton Homes’ showhome is located at 180 Park West. “We were the first to build in Town Centre and now nearing completion of 145 single-family attached homes (or duplexes),” says Spencer Curtis of Hilton Homes. “Amenities in these homes are something you would normally find in a $1 million home,” Curtis says, adding that amenities include a walkout basement onto one of the lakes. “We were pleased to be able to offer these kinds of amenities into our single-family attached homes.” Hilton Homes also has four showhomes in Bridgwater Trails, the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater newest development, Curtis points out. “We are able to offer choice,” he says. “We have single-family homes with attached garage and detached garage, and single family attached homes. We built on the success of our Town Centre design, and are offering more of the same at Bridgewater Trails.” Bridgwater Trails, the newest residential neighbourhood has many lots for sale, and lots are still available in Bridgwater Lakes. Bridgwater Forest is almost fully occupied.

Designed & Built Like No Other BY TODD LEWYS

T

here’s a special feeling you experience when you enter a home designed and built by Huntington Homes. Everything fits. Perfectly. In short, there’s a certain harmony to their designs that create a home that’s both pleasing to the eye and consistently livable from space to space.

Countless awards over the past 30 years are proof that Huntington’s endless pursuit of perfection pays off.

“That luxurious, livable feel is no accident,” says Huntington Homes’ owner, Rob Swan.

“Because we spend so much time getting to know our client, the design of their home is both intuitive and integrated and contemplates their needs today and into the future. From the foyer on in, it will have a flow and finish to it where everything fits perfectly. The flow from room to room will be effortless, while finishes will reflect the owners’ personal tastes. They will be fashionable and functional, and will be perfectly placed. Everything has to make sense. That’s the only way to strike just the right balance between luxury and livability.”

“Since day one, our attention to detail has been tireless. Our approach to designing a client’s custom home has been the starting point of our focus for over 30 years – meeting with clients and going through a very detailed questionnaire to learn what their exact needs and preferences are,” he explains. “We contemplate every detail of a client’s home design in the planning stages before construction commences. This approach ensures a timely build and one that avoids change orders and unnecessary costs to our clients.”

“The result of that pursuit is an intuitivelydesigned home that exactly fits a client’s lifestyle and preferences, “ adds Swan.

“We’re constantly striving for perfection – we always want to be the best at what we do,” notes Swan. “That’s why we use the latest CAD technology to design our homes and have developed a propriety client guidance (GPS) system. When you compare our specifications with other custom builders, it’s obvious that we’ve set the bar at a top level. We’re always looking for proven, cutting-edge products and finishes that we can inject into our homes to give them the unique, personalized look and feel our clients demand. The final product is always a home that’s distinct, dynamic – and will be enjoyable for many, many years,” he adds. “Not only will a client’s home reflect their personality, but it will also reflect their own unique energy in its design. With our top-level specifications, it will not only possess a durability that will allow it to stand the test of time, but it will also be a solid investment for the future. Our clients will typically live in their home for 10, 20, and sometimes 30 years, so they must be built to last – and be timeless in their design.”

Another Huntington hallmark – a consistent commitment to innovation – also sets them apart from other builders.

City close, country priced

Neighbourhoods

Winnipeg’s impact fees continue to be good news for developments such as Countryside Crossing in East St. Paul. This newer neighbourhood is located inside the Perimeter Highway with close proximity to city services, but offers much lower tax and building costs than properties on the other side of the municipal boundary. “We are definitely seeing more interest since the city started charging its Impact Fee this past May,” says Realtor® Mark Penner, noting the new charge of $54.73 per square meter of new build in designated new home areas in Winnipeg. He reports that sales have been steady for the new community where Concord Properties have developed a plan for luxurious country living with 154 estate-sized lots. “Most of the properties are sold, but we have just been able to open up more walkout lots on the southern side of the creek,” he says. Mark points out that Countryside Crossing comes with some unique aspects. For example, buyers can pick both their lot and their builder. “If designs meet the architectural guidelines and building codes, buyers are free to develop

as they see fit. Here the lots are large with averages around 10,000 sq. ft. This means lots of privacy and room to develop a new home that has space for families to grow and space for all the toys that make country living so much fun,” he says, adding that Countryside Crossing also offers a slate of approved builders, such as Irwin Homes, Maric Homes, K. Streu Homes, and Warkentin Homes.

Countryside Crossing is fully developed with all infrastructure in place, including parks and playgrounds, landscaping and fencing, as well as street work and utilities. This means an opportunity to locate a new home in a new community that is quickly maturing. Find out more by visiting www.countrysidecrossing.com.

The master suite offers a walk-in closet and deluxe ensuite with a floating vanity, plenty of storage space, undermount sink and sparkling white quartz countertop to complete the bathroom.

Along with homes in Quarry Ridge Park, Warkentin Custom Homes are offering high quality construction in Stone Ridge Meadows, Countryside Crossing, and Bonavista.

The Wow Factor Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Warkentin Custom Homes’ newest showhome sits in the beautiful subdivision of Quarry Ridge Park, Stonewall. This modern-style home features unique curb appeal with its espresso siding and rocky mountain stone exterior, black trim, and oversized exterior wall lights. A full glass front door welcomes you into the 1,483-square-foot bungalow, which features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a main floor laundry and walk-through pantry. The front entry closet boasts a sliding barn door, complementing the rustic wide plank oak hardwood flooring through the main level. The modern kitchen is crisp and white, featuring flat-panel cabinets, marble-styled quartz countertops, under-cabinet lighting, and white glass tile backsplash. The light feel continues into the open concept dining and living room, which boasts nine-foot ceilings, a light colour palette, and dramatic drapery. A unique tile wall surrounds the entertainment unit, which showcases statement architectural designs with a bulkhead surrounding the floating maple cabinetry.

Second stage evolving according to plan

ocated in southwest Winnipeg in Waverley West, Prairie Pointe is now starting its second stage of development, and evolving according to plan. Only a year after the first homes were built in Prairie Pointe, about 90 percent of the close to 200 single-family lots in the first stage of the development have been sold. The multifamily construction, which includes duplexes and townhomes, is well underway, according to Michael Carruthers, Ladco’s Manager of Land Development. “Stage 2 of the Prairie Point development will feature 235 single-family lots. Site servicing started earlier this year and home construction should be ready to go by the end of the year,” Carruthers says. Prairie Pointe will ultimately feature more than 500 acres of residential space offering 2,200 single-family lots as well as multi-family properties such as condos and townhomes, Carruthers says, adding that it will include nearly 60 acres of professionally designed green space and up to 50 acres of commercial amenities. Close to the University of Manitoba, Victoria Hospital, and adjacent to both Pembina Highway and Kenaston Blvd, Prairie Pointe offers ease of access to shopping centres as well as for other major travel routes. Prairie Pointe will appeal to homeowners who want all the conveniences of modern life but

want to co-exist with nature, Carruthers notes. “Prairie Pointe will offer a scenic landscape with lakes, a connected park system and pathways for jogging and cycling,” he adds. “This is a long-term development and we are in the early phase of Prairie Pointe’s evolution. But it is coming together nicely. Later this year, we hope to start development on the first of five park areas.” Over the next few years, Prairie Pointe will continue to develop and will evolve into a beautiful community that thousands of residents will call home, Carruthers adds. Six builders in Prairie Pointe have showhomes in the fall Parade of Homes: Ventura, A&S, Broadview, Hilton, Randall, and Signature. All of the showhomes are on Eaglewood Drive. For the second year, Hilton Homes will have a showhome at Prairie Pointe. This year the Hilton Home showhome is located at 56 Eaglewood Drive. Hilton built homes in South Pointe were so well received they brought some of the same amenities to Prairie Pointe, and will be adding new features, according to Spencer Curtis of Hilton Homes. “We’ve taken a design that was popular in South Pointe, reworked it and brought it to Prairie Pointe,” he says. “Customers want a modern design, so we have taken some of the best fea-

tures of our popular plan, updated it and have given homeowners what they are looking for.” Customers will see a lot of variety and choice in the Prairie Pointe homes because they are not restricted to architectural guidelines that are required in some developments, Curtis states. “We select the subdivisions we want to build in, and we feel Prairie Point adds a lot of value for customers who want to purchase a modern, energy efficient new home.” Ventura’s showhome, located at 31 Eaglewood Drive, is a 2160 square foot two-storey, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home with a loft on the second floor. The open concept features a main floor office, large rear windows off the family room and spacious island kitchen. According to Arin Comack of Ventura Custom Homes, Ventura’s plans are designed for versatility. “As a custom builder, Ventura allows clients to customize their home to fit their needs. For example, the Edgemont-16 plan has been designed with multi-generational families in mind. This 4 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home can be converted to a 7 bedroom, 3 bath home with 2 bedrooms and a full bath on the main floor to accommodate elderly parents,” says Comack. “With over 75 different plans that can be modified in any way imaginable, we can accommodate a wide array of clients,” he adds.

Upstream Living With Appealing Proximity

T

ucked in along the gently winding Assiniboine River just outside Winnipeg is Taylor Farm – the newest of the Qualico communities. Homebuyers and builders alike are breaking ground on this historic property in Headingley, with its majestic open spaces and tall native grasses. Founded on a natural landscape with a carefully preserved basswood forest, the community also features an expansive system of trails and wetlands, and much coveted proximity to the Assiniboine River. Jason Jaquet of Avanti Custom Homes says, “It’s really exciting to be pioneering a new area like this.” He credits Qualico Communities for once again setting the bar for what new home buyers expect in a desirable, well-planned community. In addition to the tranquil surroundings, wider lots are part of the architectural guidelines that define Taylor Farm. One advantage of this greater width is the opportunity to build spacious bungalows. Jaquet notes, “There’s been a demand for years, so we’re glad that Qualico Communities has done this.” Avanti is showcasing a 1,762 square foot, three-bedroom bungalow with enough room to separate the master bedroom into its own wing. “The master bedroom will have a functional and elegant ensuite, but it’s the overall flow of the home that’s really exceptional due to the large windows, distinctive entryway and vaulted ceilings throughout.” Avanti’s showhome features a contemporary modern look with a combination of acrylic stucco, stone features, distinctive trims, place-

ment of exterior lights, and exceptionally large tri-pane, low windows. Courtney Sims of Sterling Homes shares Jaquet’s enthusiasm for wider lots, showcased by Sterling’s 1,839 square foot showhome. “It’s usually difficult to accommodate a bungalow of this size within Winnipeg,” she says. “The buyer would typically have to pay a premium for the lot – if one was even available.” Taylor Farm’s Sterling showhome also incorporates a host of innovative solar energy options. Hearth Homes has used the additional space for some exciting new lifestyle features that allow homeowners to enjoy different aspects of up-country living. Hearth’s Liam Milne highlights the 3-car garage, which provides ample storage for a homeowner’s vehicles, plus recreational ‘toys’ like boats, quads and snowmobiles. “This is a big attraction for homeowners building outside of the city,” says Milne. Hearth’s 2017 Parade of Homes showhome also has a grand entrance and higher ceilings, an expansive front porch, plus unique finishes including cultured stone. “The raised bungalow plan allows for a large size basement that, due to the higher ceilings, doesn’t have to feel like a basement,” Milne explains.

materials, Reid says they also ensure that each home site connects with and contributes to the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Reid is confident that Taylor Farm will be a good fit for a wide range of buyers, including growing families, empty-nesters, and due to the short commute and proximity to the James Richardson International airport, busy executives and professionals. “One thing all buyers here have in common is the desire to be rooted in a community that gives them easy access to the city, yet has more emphasis on relaxed, country living,” says Reid. Lower taxes, no impact fees, and close proximity to many nearby services in Headingley and Winnipeg make the development an outstanding prospect for builders and homeowners. Taylor Farm has a focus on upstream living. Reid explains, “For us, this is the perfect way to capture this community’s position on the Assiniboine River, the streams and wetlands that will flow throughout, as well as the design and quality of the homes that will be constructed here.” Hearth Homes

Tara Reid of Qualico Communities emphasizes that larger lots allow homeowners to reimagine their lifestyle. “Now they can think about a firepit or pool area in the backyard, or what unique things they want to do with their landscaping.” Taylor Farm’s architectural guidelines not only uphold high standards of exterior design and AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 63

nspiration for home design can come from the most unlikely sources. For the builders at Maric Homes, it comes from subtle, but refined, things – like the stitching of leather in a luxury car’s seat to the fit and the finish of a finely made shoe. It’s about aesthetics and craftsmanship. These are the elements found in 259 Bonaventure Drive, the custom homebuilders’ fall Parade of Homes offering in Bonavista. This two-storey walkout on the lake features 3,100 total square feet of thoughtful design throughout three floors, five bedrooms, and 3.5

baths. From the moment visitors step into the entrance the design emulates how crisp, clean, and subtly beautiful the space feels. By not anchoring the stairwell to the front exterior wall, the builder was able to utilize large windows at the front, as there are no structural impediments dictating the size. This staircase - featuring oversized solid maple posts that blend into staggered solid maple slats - creates a privacy screen that still allows light to filter through, showcasing Maric’s reputation for craftsmanship and creative millwork touches.

The millwork surrounding the stairs and the wood bulkhead on the ceiling of the kitchen is intended to be a visual anchor for visitors’ eyes against the white walls, white cabinets, unique Dekton countertops, and whitewashed hardwood floors. A giant window was also placed above the sink, providing a stunning view of the lake and letting in even more light, which makes doing the dishes a pleasant experience. The home also features a sleek wood entertainment unit that is visible from the kitchen all the way through the dining room into the living room, as well as a fully custom millwork

The main level is rounded out with a beautiful powder room that will impress any guest with its thoughtful finishes and soft palette. Upstairs, Maric’s craftsmanship is utilized again to solve a somewhat common domestic problem. The master ensuite features a specifically designated separate his and hers vanity, as a result of hearing more and more clients that complain about one “messy” spouse and one “clean” spouse. Dubbed the “the argument avoider” layout, this design allows each person to deal with his or her own mess, while still sharing the space as a whole. Finally, the lower level of the home is completely finished, and includes the same stone as the exterior pillars, a fireplace and TV in a generously sized entertainment area, as well as a bedroom, bathroom, and ample storage. Admittedly, the Maric team can’t always achieve this precision solely on their own. Partnerships, such as that with Springhill Lumber, who provided the floors, roof, and many of the finishing materials for 259 Bonaventure, play a key role. After four

decades of working with Don Henzel, the principal owner/operator of Springhill Lumber, the relationship between the two companies is built on a foundation of trust, tremendous mutual respect, and outstanding service.

259 Bonaventure Drive is just another example of the strikingly beautiful, intelligent layout, luxurious materials, and thoughtful touches that the public expects from Maric Homes.

Pushing the boundaries of design, taking homebuilding to new heights, and bringing unseen ideas to life - that’s what makes Artista Homes one of the premier builders in Manitoba. “We definitely enjoy creating new trends in the homebuilding community,” states Frank Cotroneo of Artista Homes. The company’s latest Parade of Homes offering at 35 Trailside Crescent in South Pointe definitely stands out from the crowd with beautiful lines and one-of-a kind styling. “There are many elements that are unique in this home,” he says, pointing to a wonderful glass partition wall in the office, fantastic fourseason sunroom overlooking the lake, and a spectacular second floor deck that runs from the front to the rear of the home. A cornerstone of this house, if you will, is a Tyndall stone pillar set in the 3,700-square-foot home’s entrance which directs guests to the den, the great room with its 19-foot-ceilings and lake views, or the kitchen, the feature piece of the home.

Dark, high-gloss acrylic cabinets, glass wall backsplash and an island with waterfall quartz countertops give the kitchen a modern flair. Yet, the adjacent dining area’s pine-clad walls and ceilings, along with large windows overlooking the rear yard, gives a sense of invitation and warmth.

Upstairs, the innovation continues in the master ensuite featuring a large custom tile shower with body spray system, a freestanding tub and window overlooking the lake, and colour changing LED lighting, just one of those unique pieces of inspiration brought in by the creative minds at Artista.

Heart & Soul B Y C A R LY P E T E R S “I do it because I like it. I don’t do what other people are doing,” explains Heinz Albers, owner of H. Albers Builders Ltd. when questioned about his affinity for pairing walnut - a favourite hardwood of Albers and his quality-conscious customers - and white high-gloss cabinetry. “Just wait, you’ll start to see others doing it next season,” he adds. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, everyone else will need to step up their game to try and match the unparalleled level of knowledge and expertise that Albers brings to every one of his custom built homes. Working directly with clients one-on-one, from concept

to finished product, the company’s exceptional homes always feature skillful, high quality construction and aesthetically pleasing, welldesigned spaces. “Architecture is like medicine; it helps you enjoy life more,” he laughs. “Architecture is everything.” Albers latest showhome at 14 Heartleaf Lane in Sage Creek embodies this sentiment, boasting over 1,700 square feet of well thought out design and aesthetics. The large tiled foyer, doused in light from large front windows and accented by a statement-piece lighting fixture of chrome and crystal from Superlite, gives

visitors the chance to take a moment before fully entering the bungalow. The aforementioned walnut and high-gloss marriage is made in the home’s great room cabinetry, set alongside an unique, new fireplace surround Albers brought in from Arizona. With the look of a solid sheet of stone, the grey fireplace surround ties in perfectly with the distressed wood floors running through the main level. The kitchen once again takes the richness of the walnut and uses it to warm the high-gloss cabinetry and cool-toned countertops that run along the eight-foot island. touch of sparkle to the clean lines with matching pendant lighting over the island and eating area, offering the space a little symmetry. With two bedrooms on the main floor there can always be a concern about privacy. But at 14 Heartleaf Lane, Albers took that into consideration, placing the one bedroom and the master suite on opposite ends of the house. The master bedroom features a deluxe ensuite with a double vanity, large tiled shower, and a soaker tub.

This home, and the ones that have come before it, pull from Albers’ desire to look beyond the local market for inspiration. His favourite muse destination is Europe, where home design trends are very different from the North American market, taking romantic luxury and pairing it with contemporary simplicity. And, while other showhomes may employ a certain style, application alone is not enough. Knowledge, know how, and skilled craftsmanship are also required. H. of fads and trends are a smart investment for years to come. The craftsmanship complies with the company’s high standards, which includes a fantastic selection of colours for exterior and interior applications, as well as multiple precious wood options. As a craftsman himself, Albers demands the highest standards of quality in the industry so that every home he builds will stand the test of time. QUALICO Communities:

TRUE TO Qualico Communities has come to understand that for many homeowners, where you build can be as important as what you build. This is why Qualico Communities develops neighbourhoods to the highest standards of beauty, design and sustainability. These are communities within

THOSE WHO FEEL AT HOME CLOSE TO NATURE ARE AS LIKELY TO FIND THEIR PLACE IN A QUALICO COMMUNITY AS THOSE SEEKING ACCESS TO AMENITIES AND ALL THE COMFORTS OF URBAN LIVING. 74 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2017

and outside of city limits that feel like home from the start, and this is achieved by working with what’s there – enhancing the natural landscape while retaining each area’s distinct features. Whether that’s tranquil, lush surroundings or pedestrian-friendly services and conveniences.

THEIR NATURE TRUE TO OUR NATURE “Since Manitoba is rich in native species of plants, grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees this is a responsible approach for not only creating impressive natural landscapes, but also providing healthier environments where people can thrive,” explains Sarah Anderson, of Qualico Communities. Complementing the work of Mother Nature provides habitat and shelter for birds and animals while ensuring that rivers, streams and wetlands in communities are healthier and more sustainable. And there are bonuses for homeowners too, including less use of fertilizer and pesticides, less watering and mowing – all resulting in cleaner water and fresher air. “This approach is central to Qualico Communities’ commitment to reclaim and preserve the many natural wonders of the Manitoba landscape and to help protect what’s special and important in each of our communities,” says Anderson.

NEIGHBOURHOODS WHERE PEOPLE, PLANTS AND WILDLIFE LIVE IN HARMONY IS THE PROMISE OF QUALICO COMMUNITIES. Qualico Communities’ efforts and practices are a contrast to the myth that all developers put residential development ahead of everything else. Working with local

conservation groups, environmental stewards and residents, Qualico Communities strives to preserve ecological gems in its neighbourhoods and surrounding areas.

REACHING BEYOND THEIR BORDERS

Qualico Communities remains committed to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), Manitoba Region, providing ongoing support for their important conservation work in the Assiniboine Delta Area. The region includes one of the last large, intact blocks of mixed-grass prairie in Manitoba, as well as aspen parkland and spruce forests. AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 75

DOING WHAT COMES NATURALLY “We collaborated with the Friends of the Harte Trail for years in advance of beginning RidgeWood West in Charleswood, to ensure this iconic trail would not only be preserved, we also wanted it to be embraced and integrated right into the design and values of the community,” says Anderson. In the new Taylor Farm development, in Headingley, Qualico Communities worked to ensure that a rare riverbank basswood grove would continue on as a pivotal natural element within the rural community. For Oak Bluff West’s wide-open prairie views, Qualico Communities consulted with Native Plant Solutions to create a natural landscape of native grasses and shoreline vegetation. These species of plants help to clean local waterways by collecting and filtering run-off, a signature approach Qualico now uses in all of its Manitoba communities with sustainability in mind.

A WALK IN THE PARK A walk in the park amidst lush forests and native grasses, or alongside streams and wetlands provides a sense of calm and community, restoring the spirit as well

“ALL OF THIS DEMONSTRATES QUALICO’S LEADERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO BE TRUE TO BOTH THE LEGACIES AND THE FUTURES OF THE COMMUNITIES WE CREATE.” – Sarah Anderson, Qualico Communities

as one’s connection to the natural world around them. This is enhanced by the soft crunch of a stone path underfoot, the calling card of the generous limestone trails winding through Sage Creek and other Qualico communities. Using limestone over pavement on trails has other clear benefits such as long-term durability, lower maintenance costs, better water drainage (and lower mosquito populations), plus more shock absorption for runners and walkers. It’s also much cooler than concrete on a pet’s tender feet. For Qualico Communities, limestone is a natural choice for creating greener, more sustainable pathways.

PUTTING QUALITY INTO EVERY COMMUNITY While nature and humans are happy together in these communities, builders are too. According to Jason Jaquet, Vice President of Avanti Custom Homes, “Qualico is thinking about the whole community, not just the first street and that really allows builders to put our best foot forward. Most impressive,” Jaquet says, “is that Qualico Communities is responding to what homebuyers are asking for.” Anderson credits the natural Manitoba landscape with inspiring Qualico Communities. “We have an opportunity to design neighbourhoods that work for modern life, and at the same time, integrate reclaimed wetland and restore it – back to the way it was before it was farmed,” says Anderson. “Balancing these two factors is what makes our job as a community developer both challenging and exciting.”

Making Distinctions Details - the nuances - those subtle innovations; these are the hallmarks of true quality and craftsmanship in home building. For over a year and a half, Pine Creek Homes worked closely with their client to create a home that features all those distinctions. It takes a moment to notice all the unique elements of even one room. The living area, for example, looks like it flows seamlessly with the main floor, but is in fact slightly dropped giving it a definitive space in the open-concept area. The built-in, rounded planters define it further, while the ceiling above also features a slight recess to mark off the space. The focal point of the room is the gas fireplace set in a facade of stacked black granite, which provides a canvas for a large slab of marble that acts like a piece of art. This was one element the homeowner wanted incorporated into the design. They also really wanted to bring the nature that surrounded the home inside with lots of windows. For this, they requested true floor to ceiling windows - no ledges or sills

blocking the view at the base of the glass. Pine Creek Homes had to utilize commercial-style windows to achieve this innovative look.

These details - for Pine Creek Homes they are handled with great care, quality, and craftsmanship - the mark of a true custom builder.

trolling along the winding pathways of Sage Creek, you might not expect to see charming Georgian-style three-storey structures rising among the native grasses and wetlands.

With a Sobeys market, Orangetheory Fitness, Freshii, Hiro Sushi and RockWood Urban Grill’s inviting menu all steps away from home, finding ways to fill your newfound free time will be easy.

At home in any European city, Bluestem Condominiums rest among wild prairie grasses and the dry creek beds of Sage Creek. Connected to the Sage Creek Trail, and steps from the Village Centre, Bluestem’s impressive exteriors are matched by abundant lifestyle features.

Many Sage Creek residents also benefit from easy access to day trips outside the city with the area’s proximity to Lagimodiere Boulevard and Highway No.1.

With two to three bedrooms, attached garages, open concept main living spaces, spacious sun decks and dreamy front wood porches, Bluestem’s condos offer all the space and freedom of a standalone home, with the added appeal of included maintenance. All of Bluestem’s generously landscaped surroundings, including a dry creek bed lined with native grasses and shrubs topped by pedestrian bridges, plus front lawns, are kept up by the property manager, meaning more time can be spent living the life you love.

For activities closer to home, an active residents’ association helps facilitate fun programming, like a Canada Day celebration with fireworks, movies in the park, and plenty of community gatherings which helps make the new neighbourhood feel more like a small town.

“As Sage Creek grows in population, its spirit grows with it,” says Sarah Anderson, communications and neighbourhood liaison for Qualico Communities. “The volunteers and Residents’ Association put on some wonderful familyfriendly events throughout the year – the energy and activity in Sage Creek is what makes this community so unique.” With the Sage Creek school open this fall, expect even more ways to liaise with the community in the welcoming environment. here is little doubt that Glasshouse Skylofts at 311 Hargrave St. offers spectacular views. The 19 floors of residences feature massive full floor to ceiling windows that deliver a breathtaking urban panorama as far as the eye can see. There is more. A unique offering in Winnipeg real estate, Glasshouse Sky Lofts is a true 21st century design concept. The location at 311 Hargrave St. is in the heart of Winnipeg’s revitalized downtown. In fact, Glasshouse is just steps away from Bell MTS Place - site of the city’s biggest concerts and home ice to the Winnipeg Jets. It’s also close to shopping, dining, and a wealth of cultural establishments. We have created a fun environment in the heart of the action, offering an ideal mix of amenities,” she says, reporting that sales have been strong for the 200-unit property that is nearly 80 percent subscribed. It’s obvious that even IRL (in real life) the company’s designs and services are getting *heart* by customers. The six-year old business has been built mainly on referrals from satisfied customers who not only love their spaces but the service that they received. “We grew up in an entrepreneurial family; an amazing example of the value of customer service. We were taught no matter how large or small the scale was, the service we provided to our clients was the most important aspect our of business,” explains Rosemary Cappellano, co-owner of DLUX Design & Co. “We recognize the trust customers place in us when choosing a designer. We see design as a partnership.” With a vision to offer accessible design and services to clients, Rosemary, her husband Joe, and brother Saro decided to combine their existing business J & R Tile and their DLUX concept into one large family business. The goal was to keep things as simple as possible for clients through a unique a la carte option where homeowners can choose what services they need from the company - from e-design services to a full design-to-build package. A large portion of DLUX Design & Co.’s business is full renovations, offering a one-stop-shop model that helps simplify the process. “We’re able to use our project management expertise to create budgets, timelines and handle all components in-house, combining design, millwork and renovations all in one space,” she says. The company has a unique approach to millwork, which is often one of the most important elements to a space. Understanding millwork design, production, and finishes, Cappellano states having their own in-house line was a must. The DLUX

Collection is an exclusive line of millwork created uniquely for you. Produced with specific construction standards, all millwork receives white glove care with details that can include hand-wiped staining techniques, custom designed door styles, and colour selections. “We are also grateful to work with truly custom homebuilders in providing design and millwork to their clients looking for more than a modular system,” states Rosemary.

“Our strength lies in balancing aesthetic appeal with functional design, turning a simple idea into a work of enduring beauty. We strive in delivering beautiful and functional interiors, ensuring your comfort during every stage of the project.” The DLUX Collection, along with J & R tile selections, handpicked retail items, and more can be explored at DLUX Design & Co.’s new design studio at 1795 Corydon Ave. Or, check out DLUX’s Instagram account (@dluxdesignandco) to see why they’ve gained so many “followers.”

DESIGN&DECOR Hip to be Square

Geometric shapes have been utilized in all aspects of design for centuries. Clean, modern, square lines date back to the Bauhaus school of design in Germany, where modernism, the English Arts and Crafts movement, and Constructivism merged. Even artists such as Picasso utilized simple geometry to create unique and visually interesting artwork. The latest lighting trends seem to be embracing, once again, this very simplistic yet effective form of design. One example of this is the Box Pendant Cluster chandelier from Dimond Home Collection made by Elk Lighting, pictured here. With the five-light, multi-drop open cage design, each pendant can be height adjusted to provide a unique custom look. Given the open styling and the variety of heights, the fixture works perfectly to fill a high open space with just enough interest and yet not overbearing. Along with its aesthetically appealing shape, this black chandelier has copper accents - a hot trend in accessories, furniture and lighting currently - adding just enough sparkle in contrast to the dark metal. In order to provide superior function along with geometric fashion, many current lighting fixtures have integrated LED modules that provide an even sleeker look as the fixture does not need to house a regular shaped light source. Visit Robinson Lighting’s stunning showroom to view some of the most unique lighting pieces available today - round, square and otherwise.

Made In Italia

Italy is a world trendsetter, and has produced some of the greatest furniture designers in the world. Today, Italian design is born of smooth elegant lines with a practical purpose in mind The Mont Blanc, the newest collection from Italy’s Alf Italia, is fashion forward, blending versatility, bold hardware and unique colour. The light and shiny finish of the Kotò veneer stylishly dresses up the collection, but still lets the wood grain effect show through for natural beauty.

Within the bedroom collection, the headboard comes in two options - a light wood veneer with a grey tufted fabric or a wood-on-wood style which features a metallic grey inset. This darker colour is carried through to the feet of the bed and the other bedroom furniture, as well as the set’s hardware. The bold, square handles on the dresser, nightstand, chest, and wardrobe balance the sleekness of the light Kotò veneer. Dining, entertainment and occasional groupings are also available.

Along with being fashionable, the Mont Blanc’s collection of bedroom furniture is highly functional. Choose from a nightstand, three-drawer dresser, five-drawer chest, or a wardrobe with generous internal spaces and two or three swinging doors. The Mont Blanc and more of Italy’s best artistic looks are on display in the showroom at Contessa Home Decor / Contessa Fine Furniture at 103-3000 McGillivray Blvd. AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 87

ust red and burnt orange are solely for the leaves this fall. When it comes to home décor, pastel colours (think soft rose, hues of light blue) are sweeping showroom floors. The Jonathan Louis living room collection, exclusive to Dufresne, lets customers customize their space to match these trends or try something a little more classic. “There is certainly a trend towards fun colours,” states Leilei Li, category manager with Dufresne. “And if customers are looking to try something a little different this season, they can order the Jonathan Louis sectional in a pastel pink. But for those wanting to go a more subtle route, a timeless modern grey sectional with a chair in trendy pink would satisfy being both daring and docile at the same time.” (Check out this combo in person at Dufresne’s showroom). This mix and match approach is certainly an acceptable form of living room design. This also applies to matching old with new, or visa versa. neutral hues are showcasing a distinct weave pattern and even more earthy tones. Another colour trend in fabric is the throwback (or forward) to black and white but it’s not minimal or stark; it’s textured and features prints in various forms. Along with hundreds of cover options, the Jonathan Louis collection also offers a variety of construction styles based on living room space. Whether it’s compact, ideal for condo and small space living, or oversized super plush lounging options, sectionals, chairs and sofas offer great comfort and sharp style. Love what you see in the living room pictured here? This mid-century modern set is curated at Dufresne with matching dining and bedroom sets. Update your style instantly when choosing a collection from Dufresne. This exclusive collection launches in store end of September.

“For example, say you have a chair you inherited from your parents; it’s vintage leather, it has an aged affect that is one of a kind. You don’t have to throw it out when you want to update your living room. You can use it as an accent piece to really flesh out the style, the personality of the room,” states Li. “Or the opposite - say you have a neutral living room and you want to add more flair. Ordering an accent chair in a daring print will bring a dramatic highlight to your space and change the feeling.” When it comes to fabrics, Li says they are still seeing a velvet, velour-like fabric with some sheen when it to comes to colour, while natural AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 89

hile other products try to mimic the appeal of hardwood or tile, there’s nothing that can compare to the real thing. If well maintained, these two products can literally last for generations both in function and fashion. “Both hardwoods and tile provide a timeless beauty that other trendy products can’t match,” says Ward Friesen, owner of Friesen Floor & Décor, adding that both products will actually increase the value of a home. “You’ll not see a real estate ad mentioning ‘great laminate’ in the living room, but you’ll certainly see them mention hardwoods.” For over 10 years, Friesen’s has partnered with Preverco, a Canadian company with a production mill just outside of Quebec City. Along with producing the best quality hardwood floors, Preverco makes respecting wood and the environment that it comes from a top priority, encouraging environmentally friendly forest management practices. The company also works hard to stay on the cutting edge of technology and takes innovative approaches to constantly evolve and offer the latest inspired wood products. Friesen explains that the fashion side of flooring has led to a wide-board plank in low luster finishes which emulate a barn-board style that actually celebrates distressed details such as chatter marks. Hardwood’s aesthetic appeal and its excellent mechanical strength means it can go in almost all areas of the home - even in high traffic areas that see a lot of everyday living.

Timeless Appeal Friesen Flooring offers a sample selection of Ames Tile & Stone in their showroom, but they will also send customers just a few minutes down the road to see the company’s store in person. “We’ve worked with Ames for over

20 years as a vendor, and their tile product selection is excellent. Our goal is to create a collection of partners that provide high-quality products that will serve customers for many years to come.”

For areas that require a little more concern about water, tile has been a classic solution. From front entrances to bathrooms to shower surrounds, tile offers versatility and a fashionforward approach to design. “Tile is ever evolving,” states Friesen, adding they are seeing larger format tiles leading the way, ranging from 12” x 24” to 24” x 24” sizes. “As homes get bigger, so do the tiles.” AUTUMN 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 91

espite the annual trips to Milan, or the stacks of Euro magazines, Artur and Edyta, owners of m-concept, know modern European design because they live it. Whether it’s creating a luxury kitchen or a start-to-finish bathroom renovation, design is what they do best.

out of frustration in sourcing European-styled, compliant modern bathroom fixtures and fittings at attainable prices, Gottschalk decided it was time to produce something that did not compromise taste and style by offering attractively priced, architectural bath ware balancing form and function.

The couple has been distinguishing their work from the ordinary local trends since 2006. Providing clients with personalized, approachable service along with innovative design solutions using up-to-the-minute technology and premiere products are at the core of m-concept’s mission.

One of the company’s most unique products are their freestanding tubs made of blu-stone™, the brand’s signature eco-friendly stone material, crafted primarily from quartzite, as well as acrylic options for affordable style.

That mission will be put on display at m-concept’s new showroom. The company is moving from their unique two-storey, 3,500-square-foot space located on Portage Avenue to a new unit on St. James Street, which will mimic the look of the original showroom, but with a brand new grand entrance staircase, and a bit more room for displays, including a large bathroom section. Just one of the European-influenced bathroom lines brought in by m-concept is Blu Bathworks, a Canadian modern bath ware design-house and manufacturer founded by acclaimed designer, Michael Gottschalk. Born

Along with shower and bath set-ups, m-concept’s bathroom showcase will boast over 20 vanities, including Blu Bathworks modular bathroom furniture. The collection is comprised of mirrors and wall-mount vanities with an exceptionally durable Hard Surface Technology (HST) finish. Internally, the slim inner drawer and larger bottom drawer provide ample opportunity for bathroom storage and include built-in drawer organization. Premiere products paired with approachable and competitive design is just a way of life for m-concept.

ON TREND NOW Going forward into 2018, the trend to open layouts continues. In fact, they’re here to stay. Tear down the walls and open up the kitchen to connect with the rest of your main living space and the people in it. By doing so, you’ll open up a world of design options to create a space that encourages interaction and entertainment while providing form and function.

Consider your cabinets carefully. Two-tone cabinets and bleached woods are popular looks right now, and the minimalist movement continues in the kitchen. Less is definitely more according to this design trend, with many kitchens featuring fewer upper cabinets, opting for open shelving instead, or just open shelving and no uppers at all. Lower cabinets should include extra deep drawers, especially near the stove / cooktop area, where pots and pans should be close at hand and easy to access. Check out the latest cabinet and drawer organizers as well – there’s a wealth of savvy storage ideas to incorporate inside your cabinets, making for a well-organized kitchen. Quartz surface countertops are also among the latest trends carried into 2018. Offering timeless appeal and requiring less maintenance than other surfaces, Quartztopped counters fit with any style of cabinetry, and will work with any design, whether traditional, contemporary or anything in between. The same can be said for stainless steel appliances, which blend in well with any style. As for the kitchen backsplash, white subway tile steps aside for exciting new looks that offer colour, pattern, texture and unique design options. Another hot trend in kitchen and bath design right now is colour, particularly the blues. Expect to see it everywhere, from tile to cabinets to appliances.

Don’t forget to look up when considering a design focal point in your space. The ceiling – typically the most neglected canvas in the room - has been getting plenty of attention lately, as designers look for distinctive ways to inspire a kitchen or other rooms in the home.

KITCHEN&BATH Emulating Style

With all the advancements in flooring design and technology, when a hard surface looks like wood, it looks like wood, even if it’s tile. This aweinspiring tile collection called Arte Lengo, which from Italian translates to “art wood,” brings the beauty of this natural element to any setting but with the durability and versatility of tile. Rugged wood-looking tile planks are being applied to floors, of course, but are also a unique option for feature walls, fireplaces, bar facades (like the one pictured here), and even ceilings. Featured here in both Warhol (on the bar) and Black (on the ceiling), this functional surface presents an authentic look with superior durability. Along with woods, faux marble and stone are adding impact as statement pieces in the same applications. The Arte Legno series is just one example of how Ames Tile & Stone Ltd. demonstrates their dedication to bringing the most fashion forward looks to the market. “For more than 100 years, Ames has been taking design to the next level with a dedicated team that is form and function focused,” states Barb Hilderman, architectural and design sales consultant with Ames. “Along with knowledgeable and trendsetting staff, Ames features the most user-friendly, design driven showroom located at 970 Lorimer Blvd., which is open to the public for reference and product selection.”

High Impact

A little sheen can certainly create a whole lot of impact. While the overall design concept for the kitchen in this South Pointe home is simplistic and contemporary, the combination of the cabinet’s high-gloss appearance paired with full-length stainless steel doors and frosted glass makes the space a real statement piece. Kitchen Craft’s design goals with this Artista Home was to have an open concept kitchen for entertaining with plenty of cabinets to achieve maximum storage space without limiting the amount of countertop space. Those stainless steel doors front the tall pantry cabinets for ample storage, while the company’s Summit Acrylic door, finished in Metallic Gibraltar - a fine medium grey with a metallic sheen - also keeps counters clear. The cabinet’s full-length flush-edge mounted handles tie everything together to match the rest of the high-end finishing found throughout the home. The eight-foot-wide and three-and-a-halffoot-deep island which features quartz waterfall gables, lends itself to being a gathering spot in the kitchen, while the far wall, complete with a tempered glass backsplash and unique stainless steel range hood, offers plenty of prep space for cooking and contributes to the overall trendsetting contemporary ambience. From modern minimalist to classic chic, Kitchen Craft can personalize the design details to reflect any taste, style and space.

KITCHEN&BATH Find Your Inspiration

With Pinterest, HGTV and racks of interior design magazines, homeowners seem to know what they want in a kitchen. But there’s nothing that can beat seeing the real thing. Springfield Woodworking’s showroom at 893 Redonda is an amazing idea centre, and a great place to start your kitchen planning project. With multiple kitchen setups, the showroom highlights how styles can come together and how interior accessories can help make a kitchen more efficient to use. It also features every one of Springfield’s door styles and colours, along with a wide selection of granite and quartz counter tops. Another thing you’ll notice when looking at a Springfield cabinet in person is the quality. The company boasts the best durable UV finish in the industry, thanks to state-of-the-art equipment. They also build every cabinet with a full 5/8-inch back that is ridged and durable; Springfield is the only company in this market that makes cabinets that way. Once you’ve picked your perfect Springfield cabinet, your site is measured to ensure custom cabinets fit the customer’s space exactly - no use of ugly wide filler strips to make standard box sizes fit. A perfect example is cabinetry finished up to the ceiling in this La Salle kitchen, which not only gives a very dramatic look to the kitchen but also provides lots of extra storage.

Nordic Elegance

There’s a balance between bold and cold, and Duravit has struck that note perfectly in their latest offering, the LUV Collection. “Collections are either chunky and masculine or they’re very minimal with almost sterile lines and edges. The LUV collection is a beautiful combination of the two; it’s almost graceful,” states Astrid Bergstrom, showroom manager at BA Robinson Co. Ltd. Duravit, a German-based company, is known for utilizing designers to create their ceramic bathroom fittings to ensure each collection provides a different look. Designed by Cecilie Manz, considered one of the leading Danish furniture designers, the Luv series combines Nordic minimalism with timeless elegance and is defined by precise, clear and fine forms and edges. The designer’s original vision for this series was a bowl filled with water on a table. That vision comes to form in not only oval abovecounter basins, but also a whole complementary series of fixtures, including toilets, bidets, and oval freestanding bathtubs, which can be adapted into back-to-wall and corner versions. The furniture in the Luv series features modern chests with height-adjustable feet and one or two drawers, which open and close gently, thanks to the push-toopen technology and self-closing function. Pieces come in white, Nordic white, taupe, stone grey, light blue or night blue to enable highly individual bathroom design. The LUV collection display will be on display this fall at BA Robinson Co. Ltd.
