As for entertainment, our food aficionado reports a few new gems have popped up on Winnipeg’s vibrant dining scene; there’s also plenty to take in this season where arts and cultural activities are concerned. You could say our city is bursting with life.

Second, Winnipeg was ranked among the top seven “smartest” cities in the world for 2016 by the Intelligent Community Forum.

The non-profit think tank is based in New York, and recently announced the winners of the world’s seven most gifted metropolises.

Two other Canadian cities hit the list as well: Montreal and Surrey. Other cities to make the list this year included Hsinchu County, Taiwan; Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany; New Taipei City, Taiwan and Whanganui, New Zealand.

One of the seven will be named ICF’s Intelligent Community of the Year in June 2016.

Keep your fingers crossed Winnipeggers – let’s hope it’s us!

But back to winter: Yes – it’s a given; we’ve all been ravaged by Winnipeg’s bitterly cold winters, and we’re all completely aware of how living here during the cold season does take some fortitude. And yes – we are located on the prairies – no majestic mountains or expansive ocean views to take one’s breath away here.

One might think we only have one season in Winnipeg, and that there’s nothing really exciting about living here, much less travelling here for a vacation. Apparently, nothing could be further from the truth!

“That binder was a great starting point for all of us,” says Lori Thorsteinson, sales manager with Parkhill Homes. “We were able to gain important insight into our clients’ personal style, tastes and budget, as well as their vision for their home. It made it much easier to start the design process.”

Lots of storage, large living areas and easy flow between spaces were the main requirements for these homeowners, who worked closely with the Parkhill Homes team to come up with a Craftsman-inspired, two-storey design that would meet their needs—and then some.

Starting from the curb, it’s clear that this house is all about form and function. There’s a three-car garage that extends like a wing off of the front of the home. A covered veranda is the perfect place to greet guests, host family gatherings or to enjoy a cooling breeze.

The attractive, maintenance-free façade is clad in James Hardie Board cementitious siding, brick, and white “smart” trim supplied by Gentek and Springhill Lumber. The exterior exudes classic warmth that extends to the interior.

Once inside the front foyer, the home opens into an expansive great room with gleaming, wide-plank, hardwood flooring stained a rich shade. These vintage, hand-scraped hardwoods installed throughout the main floor are a gorgeous underpinning for the creamy-beige walls and 4-inch white painted baseboards.

The great room features built-in bookshelves and maple cabinetry by Kitchen Craft, which align with the homeowners’ desire for “a place for everything, and everything in its place.”

A gas fireplace with a simple mantel built by Parkhill Homes’ finish carpenter of 30 years, Krest Carpentry, is another nod to Craftsman

style. A bank of floor-to-ceiling windows brings abundant natural light into the space.

Set into a recessed nook is a built-in bar, which provides more storage and a convenient serving area.

French doors open from the great room into a spacious den. Once again, loads of natural light enters the room via large windows surrounded in 3-inch white wood casing. Storage was an important consideration here, accomplished with a large walk-in closet and dark-stained cabinets. The kitchen is easily accessed from the great room / den area.

“Flow was important to this couple,” says Thorsteinson. “We designed the home so each room flows naturally from one to the next for entertaining and everyday family life.”

he thought of giving up 30% to 40% per year or more in investment returns to pay for portfolio management and advice would cause most people to walk away.

Yet, this is the price many people pay when they hire an investment advisor to manage their investment portfolio.

The 30% - 40% annual cost is simple math.

Take the average expense ratio charged by a Canadian Equity mutual fund (which includes the advisor fee) then divide it by the expected portfolio return before fees. The result is your investment cost. I’ll walk you through an example.

According to www.Globefund.ca (the Globe and Mail website for the most reliable and up-to-date source of unbiased mutual fund information for Canadians), the average management expense ratio for Canadian Equity mutual funds is 2.14%. The average annual net rate of return for this category of mutual funds over the past 15 years is 4.46%.

Therefore, the portfolio return before fees would be 4.46% plus 2.14% = 6.60%. Divide 2.14% by 6.60% and you get 32.42%. This is the cost to invest in the average Canadian Equity mutual fund over the past 15 years.

When stated as a percentage of assets, average fees may seem reasonable, however, when calculated as a percentage of returns, fees may no longer look low.

GALLERIES & MUSEUMS Winnipeg Art Gallery - Continuing exhibitions foreground WAG’s Inuit and First Nations art. Assiniboine Park Zoo - In collaboration with The Winnipeg Art Gallery, an impressive array of Inuit sculpture is exhibited on an ongoing, rotating display in Inuit Art at Journey to Churchill. The carvings are featured in a 20-foot long case in the Journey to Churchill’s Gateway to the Arctic building (to Dec 2020).

Actual Gallery - This new and dynamic independent art gallery in the Exchange District is quickly becoming known for pushing the envelope. Arbor Vitae by Grace Nickel investigates natural forms pitted against artificial construction as well as surfaces separated and reintegrated. PLUNDER DUPES by Ian August works to identify and create replicas of the 3000 Mesopotamian artifacts that were looted from the Baghdad Museum during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. And Planned Parenthood by Erica Mendritzki dissects history and presence within the canon by deconstructing economic value, gender and geography (to Mar 19).

Specialty store wants families back in the kitchen A family-owned specialty store has made its mission to bring families back into the kitchen.

The owners are so committed to their mission, they have posted it on the wall of Perfect Pairs, a new specialty store that bills itself as the “the ultimate experience in oil and vinegar.”

“Getting together with family and friends over a meal is special, “says Mike Deneka, who along with fiancé and business partner Giselle Riegel, own and operate Perfect Pairs. “We want to teach families and friends they can have a great meal at home, and have fun cooking it.”

Located at Unit C, 2450 Main Street, Perfect Pairs features a variety of tastes and diversity of flavours that only the best extra virgin olive oils and premium aged balsamic vinegars can capture.

“We have a tasting bar that features over 40 different flavours of extra virgin olive oil and flavoured balsamic vinegars,” Mike explains.

“We will learn a customer’s flavour preference and then help choose the ‘Perfect Pairs’ to go

with it. We also have a pairing list that provides information on suggested pairings of olive oil and vinegar.”

Olive oils are stored in rows of stainless steel fusti, which are designed to keep the products fresh.

Perfect Pairs also offers private tasting parties where customers can invite their family and friends, Giselle points out. “When we hold a party, we pair plates for bread dipping and encourage the host/hostess to bring other foods such as fruits, veggies, cheeses and other foods to make up that unique flavour combination.”

Mike adds they were confident about their decision from the outset. “We grew up in this area, so we knew the community needed a store like ours.” He says their customers are primarily from the local area as well as surrounding bedroom communities such as St. Andrews, Lockport, Selkirk, and Oak Bank.

The Perfect Pairs olive oil and balsamic vinegar products come in four different sizes, ranging from 60 ml to 750 ml. “The 60 ml bottles are ideal and unique as a wedding favour,” Giselle says. Gift baskets, custom made or premade, start at under $25 and are suitable for any occasion. The store also offers boxed pairings, gift certificates and hostess gifts.

Most of the products at Perfect Pairs are locally sourced. They carry pastas from Steinbach, mustards made right here in Winnipeg, sea salts and a rub/dip line from Vancouver Island.

Even the bread they use for dipping is from a nearby bakery, Giselle points out.

Stringent standards While Perfect Pairs is their own brand, the ultra-premium olive oil and balsamic vinegar come from a supplier in California, Mike explains. “Our supplier has been endorsed as having the highest quality extra virgin olive, and has stringent standards about where its product is sold.”

The couple recalls their introduction to this concept. “It was an oil and vinegar tasting bar in Fargo. We were blown away by the variety of flavours and the freshness,” Mike says.

“Giselle turned to me and said ‘we need to bring this concept back home’.” That’s when the idea for Perfect Pairs was born.

“If we can’t order from a local supplier, we will order form a Canadian one,” she says, noting the Olive Oil & Vinegar Lovers’ cookbook they carry is written by an author from B.C. “We support local business,” Giselle adds, “but our mission is to teach family and friends how to have fun making a great, quick meal at home.”

After visiting the store and sampling the products, this writer was inspired to do just that!

Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing 16 large eggs ¼ cup (50 mL) all-purpose flour 3 tbsp (45 mL) chopped fresh thyme leaves 2 tsps (10 mL) salt 1 ½ tsp (7 mL) pepper 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard ½ tsp (2 mL) garlic powder 1/3 cup (75 mL) finely chopped sundried tomatoes in oil 3 cups (750 mL) baby kale 1 cup (250 mL) red onion, thinly sliced Preheat oven to 325° (160°C). Brush a rimmed baking sheet with olive oil. Line baking sheet with parchment paper; brush parchment paper with oil. Beat eggs in a bowl until combined, then beat in flour, thyme, salt, pepper, mustard, and garlic powder until smooth. Stir in sundried tomatoes. Pour into prepared baking sheet.

Tuck in kale and top with red onion slices. Bake until puffed and golden, about 20 minutes.

Broil top for 2-3 minutes until nicely browned.

Serve warm or room temperature, cut into squares.

Makes 8 servings or 16 appetizer portions.

Mayan Pudding Cake 1 ½ cups (375 mL) semi sweet chocolate chips ½ cup (125 mL) butter ¾ cup (175 mL) sugar 4 eggs 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour ½ tsp (2 mL) cinnamon ¼ tsp (1 mL) baking powder ¼ tsp (1 mL) cayenne pepper ½ tsp (2 mL) salt, divided ½ cup (125 mL) sliced almonds 2 tsp (10 mL) olive oil 1 tsp (5 mL) brown sugar Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9x9 inch (22 x 22 cm) pan. Microwave chocolate chips and butter in a large microwave safe bowl, on high, for 1 to 1 ½ minutes or until mixture has melted. Stir at 30 second intervals. Beat in sugar until incorporated. Beat in eggs, one at a time, just until blended. Beat in flour, cinnamon, baking powder, cayenne pepper and ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt. Pour batter into prepared pan. In small bowl, combine almonds, olive oil, brown sugar and remaining salt. Sprinkle almond mixture over batter in pan. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for about 25 minutes. Center should be soft. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes and serve warm.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy BLACKSTAR David Bowie (ISO/Sony) The magician died two days after his new album’s release, and the amateur forensics began. This time, though, don’t blame public sorrowing – Blackstar isn’t the album some of us want it to be, but its many brilliant moments honour the artist who was always more than his persona, and make this the most entrancing David Bowie album since Station to Station. The 10-minute title song is every whiff as mysterious, without the assurance of rock and a guitar solo at the end. Instead, over a vaguely Spanish theme, electronically massaged vocals coo and lure us to reflect upon a hidden village, a day of execution and a solitary candle. Soon, the mist breaks, nudged open by saxophones and flutes and another mystical turn (“On the day he died”), with the ghost choir singing, “I’m a Blackstar” – an obscure gambit of undeniable beauty, deserving days of immersion. Additional days and nights may be invested in confidence with the frantic enigma of “Sue (Or in the Season of Crime)” and the heavy-gravity pull of “Girl Loved Me,” and there’s a wink to followers on the last track, “I Can’t Give Everything Away,” where a wayward harmonica flourish recalls one of Bowie’s most wistful moments from the past. The name of that song? “A New Career in a New Town” – he will surprise us yet.

THE NAMES Swimming (Factory Benelux import) The Names idolized Joy Division, so it was a coup when the Belgian band was signed in 1980 to the Manchester band’s label, Factory, and producer, Martin Hannett.

Swimming, their 1982 debut, was singular, nonetheless. Singer/bassist/songwriter Michael Sordinia preferred cool to Joy Division’s cold, and his yearning singing was matched perfectly by keyboard player, Christophe Dan Tandt, who set frosty layers of organ and synthesizer, and rare, thrilling tumbles of piano (listen to his almost weightless solo against the magnetic pull of “Leave Her to Heaven”). The original album has been extended smartly with radio sessions and a few non-album singles, including “Calcutta” – a rush of a song with echoes, oddly enough, of early U2.

In the curve of absurdist British humour, the Bonzo Dog Band sits happily with The Goon Show and Monty Python, with more saxophones and better tunes. If there really was a pub called the Fool and Bladder, as late and gifted frontman Vivian Stanshall proposed, then this was the house band. Packing five albums into a budget-priced triple-disc set has left no room for liner essays or many extra tracks, but this is a rush, from the early Music Hall jazz and novelty songs, all brawling trombones and zany clarinet, through the increasingly sophisticated song writing of Stanshall and Neil Innes. For starters, try “My Pink Half of the Drainpipe” for its dizzying take on suburban propriety, the bizarre social tableau of “Ready-Mades,” or the wicked seaside sketches of “Postcard.”

The Moroccan-born artist, who now lives in Niverville, grew up among the red sandstone coloured houses and vibrant souks that characterize his home city of Marrakech. It’s where, at a young age, he apprenticed in the art of Zouaq; a decorative style of painting that originates from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries and is used to decorate homes.

The geometric patterns in Zouaq can include organic shapes and elements like leaves, flowers and intertwined vines. Laarissa creates his own stencils to help sketch his initial pattern. Then, using acrylics, he painstakingly paints the design with controlled movements using a special brush of donkey hair (from the mane).

A Place in the Sky Winnipeggers who want to reach for the stars will soon have their chance with the coming of SkyCity, a $175-million, 45-storey city centre tower that is expected to house 388 residential units, 60,000 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet of retail.

“The idea,” says Fortress Real Developments President, Jawad Rathore, “is to create a mixed use high rise that offers residences and offices alongside commercial and light retail in a setting that is more in keeping with the needs of new urbanites who seek a live, work, play arrangement.”

“When we looked at downtown Winnipeg we saw Toronto years ago, with its surface parking lots and empty buildings. We also saw a lot of opportunity in a great city with a lot happening.

“Interest has been strong from the public who have been excited by the premier location and the modernization of the traditional suburb,” he says.

According to Brown, they expect the first showhomes to be ready for viewing by this fall in time for the Parade of Homes. He suggests that there is much to be excited about. For instance, Bonavista will be a community oriented, life cycle neighbourhood with a variety of housing options where people can grow up, start a family and retire with all the modern amenities, services and facilities they need in close proximity. As well, the community is designed to promote neighbourhood wellbeing through healthy environment and lifestyles.

Aaron Hirota, Senior Landscape Architect at McGowan Russell Group and a Sage Creek resident, has played a key role in the design aesthetic of the community.

“Our office was brought in at the inception of Sage Creek. We began working on early concepts with Qualico, and then, as the project moved ahead, we worked on entrance features, the aesthetic development of Sage Creek, as well as construction drawings for the trail system and park areas,” he explains.

“First and foremost, the design comes from the theme of going back to nature. From the beginning we set about honouring that vision by incorporating a simple palette of design elements including native plants, stone and woods that repeat throughout the development; these natural materials give the feeling that the community has been there for a long long time.”

This dedication to creating and maintaining an innovative look and feel doesn’t stop at the pathways and trails; it continues into the design standards Qualico has set for the community’s builders.

To ensure diversity in terms of design and the types of homes available in the community, Sage Creek boasts a wide assortment of builders offering single family homes, sweeping estate homes, townhouses, condos and even luxury laned homes with rear three-car garages.

“As a resident, I like the fact that this is a development with such an assortment of housing types,” he explains. “There’s a wide range of architectural designs and they try to keep the controls pretty high. What this means is that there is a lot of detail going into the housing stock and that the community as a whole is nice to look at. It’s not a constant repetition of cookie cutter housing. Qualico is trying to keep the area as architecturally rich as possible.”

Sage Creek is home to 27 acres of wetlands and 66 acres of native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees serving as habitat and shelter for native birds and animals. These native grasses absorb carbon from the air, purify the soil, and also make for unbelievable sunset walks.

“The goal is to have a complete community with a variety of housing types and commercial spaces – a community where residents have the ability to walk to the grocery store, shop and dine in the community or play in the park with their kids. It’s a special community as you can

do all kinds of different activities without having to get into your car and go somewhere.”

Liveability and walkability are the hallmarks of life in Sage Creek, and new commercial ventures continue the evolution of the community. What was a simple plot of land 10 years ago now boasts over 1,200 homes, as well as commercial amenities including grocery shopping, banking, gas, veterinary services, a dentist, restaurants, coffee and more.

Winnipeg’s South Pointe community has stood out as one of the city’s most popular new home developments. The reasons are many.

Master planned by Ladco, South Pointe offers parks and walking paths as well as wetlands that contribute to the community’s highly liveable lifestyle. More, the neighbourhood is home to great new home designs from Manitoba’s leading builders that work to create a contemporary setting. South Pointe is also well connected to fabulous shopping areas, points such as the University of Manitoba and Victoria General Hospital, as well as offering quick access to roads out to cottage country.

South Pointe is also home to stateof-the-art education facilities.

The Pembina Trails School Division reports École South Pointe School will open for the 2016 / 2017 academic year with a new Kindergarten to Grade 8 facility. This section has a very finished, mature neighbourhood feel to it,” he says.

With the completion of Phase I of South Pointe, Ladco is moving west across Kenaston to develop 640 acres in its new Prairie Pointe community. According to Ladco’s Development Officer Tyler Smith, they are working on the first 200 lots in the first phase.

At 640 acres, Prairie Pointe will be a slightly larger than South Pointe at build-out. According to Smith and Borger, the new section will offer about 2,200 lots and will include facets such as 75 acres of space for multi-family properties such as condos and townhomes.

And like South Pointe, the new development will hook up to the Active Transportation Network and its myriad of bicycle paths, as well as transit and main auto routes.

“We will also offer a full slate of parks and ponds, as well as walking

paths,” says Smith, who adds that they have planned for 50 acres of commercial space to offer key services, such as light retail and professional.

Here David Borger concludes that with South Pointe now largely behind them, they are taking what they learned and using it to create yet another successful new home community amid a long list of development masterpieces. GOOD FIT FOR FLOORING The team at Design Shop understands the need to pay attention to flooring, and how materials, palettes, and surface textures work together with the overall plan. This is why they turned to local supplier, The Floor Show, on a recent project in Tuxedo where their drawings called for select flooring, tile and specialty finishes.

According to Design Shop’s Debbie Golub, they do a lot of preliminary work on materials and products from each project they engage. It was after doing a lot of homework that they selected The Floor Show as a supplier.

“We love the way they do their installs. They are meticulous,” she says, noting that this is just one of the reasons Design Shop works so closely with the Winnipeg-based flooring contractor. “We get their advice on how to best

install the finishes and they introduce us to new exclusive lines that will help distinguish our work. They’re very helpful in our process.”

In a recent Tuxedo project, Design Shop’s design called for five-inch wide brushed white oak engineered wood flooring that was laid throughout the home’s main floor. On the second level, the family room, and on the stairs, the team at The Floor Show laid premium quality Arabesque carpet with a top-of-the-line 22 lb. underlay.

Together with the client, the design team chose a high-end commercial premium patterned metallic vinyl sheet flooring for the mudroom / laundry room. In the kitchen, Design Shop specified an impressive handmade crackle finish glazed ceramic tile that was used for the

backsplash. For the living room fireplace, they installed 12 x 24 Tyndall stone and a decorative 3D custom stained wood block on the feature wall beside it.

Behind the success of the reno / design project was a team that offered the kind of information and feedback that help remove some of the anxiety that is so often present in home construction projects. Golub reports that staff at The Floor Show were not just knowledgeable on product, but were able to discuss material price points, lead times on deliveries as well as scheduling and more.

“Good communication and experience are the groundwork we’ve laid for success,” says The Floor Show Sales Associate and Project Manager, Derek Turland. Derek worked on the

DESIGN&DECOR Tuxedo project and suggests that the installations went so smoothly because of the synergy between players such as himself, the designer, and the contractors.

“We work to get to know each other and establish a relationship based on understanding of the job’s unique needs. Then it’s up to us to perform,” he says, remarking that he is involved in every step of the project, from measuring to providing a quote, from the sale through to the delivery and management of materials.

Both Turland and Golub remark that with every job come challenges that require special solutions.

For example, the fragile handmade Arabesque tiles for the kitchen backsplash were difficult to cut. Here, everyone was informed quickly and a new plan was set in motion to create a minor change to the pattern. In another example, one of the chosen flooring materials was unavailable from the factory.

“As soon as The Floor Show knew, we knew,” says Debbie, who points out that the substitute had already been discussed, but was sidelined over price. “The Floor Show worked with us to stay within the original budget,” she says.

Golub suggests they see their relationship with The Floor Show as being part of a winning team where customer focus and satisfaction is the end result. “We never feel like we are getting a sales pitch. The information is transparent. If there’s ever an issue, they work with us promptly and proactively. They don’t have a short-sighted perspective, which is why they’re a good fit for us.”
