the agenda Bring on the spring! At writing time, we’ve just come through a cold snap, and like everyone else, I’m more than ready for the new and warmer season waiting just around the corner. On that note, we’re hoping our Spring 2016 issue will get you in the mood for heading outdoors again (and not to shovel snow!) Among the editorials featured, Style’s latest edition offers readers a chance to ponder fresh new looks, ideas and products for the landscape or perhaps consider a sunroom installation (peruse Outdoor Living for the latest trends). Other reading includes a preview of the many housing options available for viewing during the

As for entertainment, our food aficionado reports a few new gems have popped up on Winnipeg’s vibrant dining scene; there’s also plenty to take in this season where arts and cultural activities are concerned. You could say our city is bursting with life.

Second, Winnipeg was ranked among the top seven “smartest” cities in the world for 2016 by the Intelligent Community Forum. The non-profit think tank is based in New York, and recently announced the winners of the world’s seven most gifted metropolises. Two other Canadian cities hit the list as well: Montreal and Surrey. Other cities to make the list this year included Hsinchu County, Taiwan; Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany; New Taipei City, Taiwan and Whanganui, New Zealand. One of the seven will be named ICF’s Intelligent Community of the Year in June 2016. Keep your fingers crossed Winnipeggers – let’s hope it’s us!

But back to winter: Yes – it’s a given; we’ve all been ravaged by Winnipeg’s bitterly cold winters, and we’re all completely aware of how living here during the cold season does take some fortitude. And yes – we are located on the prairies – no majestic mountains or expansive ocean views to take one’s breath away here. One might think we only have one season in Winnipeg, and that there’s nothing really exciting about living here, much less travelling here for a vacation. Apparently, nothing could be further from the truth!

In fact - on a worldwide scale, our fine city recently made it onto the Top Seven List from two different sources, for two different reasons.

Top seven in two categories – now that’s something to be proud of! Just one more reason to love Winnipeg!

First, in a Traveller editorial, Australian writer Julietta Jameson gave Winnipeg top marks in her piece “Seven of the world’s best

TONS OF STORAGE, NATURAL FLOW AND HIGH STYLE DEFINE CUSTOM-BUILT HOME 6 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2016

“That binder was a great starting point for all of us,” says Lori Thorsteinson, sales manager with Parkhill Homes. “We were able to gain important insight into our clients’ personal style, tastes and budget, as well as their vision for their home. It made it much easier to start the design process.” Lots of storage, large living areas and easy flow between spaces were the main requirements for these homeowners, who worked closely with the Parkhill Homes team to come up with a Craftsman-inspired, two-storey design that would meet their needs—and then some. Starting from the curb, it’s clear that this house is all about form and function. There’s a three-car garage that extends like a wing off of the front of the home. A covered veranda is the perfect place to greet guests, host family gatherings or to enjoy a cooling breeze. The attractive, maintenance-free façade is clad in James Hardie Board cementitious siding, brick, and white “smart” trim supplied by Gentek and Springhill Lumber. The exterior exudes classic warmth that extends to the interior. Once inside the front foyer, the home opens into an expansive great room with gleaming, wide-plank, hardwood flooring stained a rich shade. These vintage, hand-scraped hardwoods installed throughout the main floor are a gorgeous underpinning for the creamy-beige walls and 4-inch white painted baseboards. The great room features built-in bookshelves and maple cabinetry by Kitchen Craft, which align with the homeowners’ desire for “a place for everything, and everything in its place.” A gas fireplace with a simple mantel built by Parkhill Homes’ finish carpenter of 30 years, Krest Carpentry, is another nod to Craftsman

style. A bank of floor-to-ceiling windows brings abundant natural light into the space. Set into a recessed nook is a built-in bar, which provides more storage and a convenient serving area. French doors open from the great room into a spacious den. Once again, loads of natural light enters the room via large windows surrounded in 3-inch white wood casing. Storage was an important consideration here, accomplished with a large walk-in closet and dark-stained cabinets. The kitchen is easily accessed from the great room / den area. “Flow was important to this couple,” says Thorsteinson. “We designed the home so each room flows naturally from one to the next for entertaining and everyday family life.”

H

ow does a 3-inch binder filled with home décor magazine pages, photos, swatches, handwritten notes and paint chips evolve into a beautiful, 3,700-square-foot, custombuilt home in Headingley’s Deer Pointe community? The answer lies in a strong, trusting relationship developed between client and homebuilder. And many conversations. When the owners of this Craftsman-style home decided they were finally ready to entrust their binder of wishes, dreams and ideas to a builder, they chose Parkhill Homes.

Abundant cabinetry maintains a classic connection to the rest of the home, while sleek, brushed steel handles add a contemporary touch.

More storage is found behind a discreet glass door leading into the 11-ft long walk-in pantry adjoining the kitchen. A clever telephone desk tucked just around the corner shares the same wall with the great room bar on the other side. Two doors leading from the dining room area open onto a large covered patio that overlooks the green space and has stairs leading to the pool area below. Replete with fireplace, outdoor kitchen, ceiling fans and heaters, this outdoor space is enjoyed on all but the coldest winter days.

Rounding out the main floor is a two-piece powder room and a laundry room with—you guessed it—even more storage.

6The large kitchen island serves up many conveniences, like a food prep and eating area and more great storage underneath. It also provides visual separation between the kitchen and informal dining room. A gorgeous solid quartz countertop from Carrara Tile & Marble graces the top of the island. Lighting fixtures from Robinson Lighting grace the kitchen/ dining areas, as well as other rooms throughout the home.

Sophisticated subway tiles on the backsplash are the perfect pairing with solid quartz countertops from Carrara Tile & Marble, also gracing the large kitchen island. The island serves up many conveniences: as food prep and eating area (and popular gathering spot), and contributing more great storage underneath. It also provides visual separation between the kitchen and informal dining room. Minimalist light fixtures from Robinson Lighting keep things streamlined in the kitchen; a more traditional chandelier defines the dining area. SPRING 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 9

The home’s lower level provides more living room. Here, texture and technology mingle to create a comfortable place in which to relax or entertain. A completely open rec room features a gas fireplace, TV and more Craftsman-esque builtins. Visitors and homeowners alike can cozy up to the well-equipped wet bar. Entirely insulated and with a raised floor and theatre seating, the media room is a great place to enjoy movies and video games. The home design accommodated a separate exercise room complete with flat screen TV and more storage. There’s a three-piece bathroom with 36” by 48” shower right next door, to use post-workout. Here, as in the whole home, the lower level is wired for sound and light so the homeowners can set the mood. Horizontal windows in nearly every room means natural light can filter into the entire space in the daylight hours. It’s hard to imagine that this impressive home emerged from the pages of a modest binder. Working closely together with their clients from design through execution, the Parkhill Homes team successfully built a home that is a balance of openness, coziness and modernity. “No detail was overlooked,” says Thorsteinson. “We were happy that it accomplished everything they wanted.”

30% or More of Your Potential Wealth Might Never Be Yours Because of High Investment Management Fees!

T

he thought of giving up 30% to 40% per year or more in investment returns to pay for portfolio management and advice would cause most people to walk away. Yet, this is the price many people pay when they hire an investment advisor to manage their investment portfolio. The 30% - 40% annual cost is simple math. Take the average expense ratio charged by a Canadian Equity mutual fund (which includes the advisor fee) then divide it by the expected portfolio return before fees. The result is your investment cost. I’ll walk you through an example. According to www.Globefund.ca (the Globe and Mail website for the most reliable and up-to-date source of unbiased mutual fund information for Canadians), the average management expense ratio for Canadian Equity mutual funds is 2.14%. The average annual net rate of return for this category of mutual funds over the past 15 years is 4.46%.

of the cost that they are paying to have their investments managed.

Therefore, the portfolio return before fees would be 4.46% plus 2.14% = 6.60%. Divide 2.14% by 6.60% and you get 32.42%. This is the cost to invest in the average Canadian Equity mutual fund over the past 15 years. When stated as a percentage of assets, average fees may seem reasonable, however, when calculated as a percentage of returns, fees may no longer look low. It seems ironic that many will monitor with close attention the cost of such items as gasoline, groceries and even wireless data plans, yet many Canadian investors have no idea

According to surveys that have been done by different firms and organizations in Canada, many Canadians incorrectly believe that they pay no fees to have their investments managed. You should expect value for the advice that you pay for, such as a personalized portfolio, complete transparency and one-on-one professional, unbiased advice. Paying lower fees and receiving conflict-free advice versus the traditional model puts a lot more wealth in your pocket over the years. If you don’t know exactly what you are paying in fees, you are probably paying too much! We can help you make sense of the fees you are paying. Email us at info@evolutionsolutions.ca. Evolution Private Wealth Management Solutions Inc. in conjunction with Exponent Investment Management Inc.

IF WE CAN’T REDUCE YOUR INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT FEES BY $1,500 PER YEAR* OR MORE, DINNER IS ON US! • FACT

Canadians pay among the highest investment management fees in the world.

• FACT

By reducing your management fees, you can significantly increase your returns and ultimately the total amount of wealth that you accumulate.

• FACT

Most Canadian investors do not know how much (dollars and cents) they are currently paying annually for investment management fees as well as other fees associated with their investments.

Most Canadians would not buy a house or a car without knowing how much it costs. However, most Canadians either don’t know or don’t care how much they are paying in management fees for their investments. Isn’t it time you find out exactly how much you are paying and whether you can reduce that amount so that you can keep more of the returns on your investments and accumulate more wealth for yourself and your family?

EXCLUSIVE OFFER We will review your investments and provide you with a no cost, no obligation written report summarizing exactly how much you are currently paying in management fees (as well as other fees that you may not be aware of). We will also provide a written recommendation demonstrating exactly how much we can reduce your investment management fees by. If we cannot reduce your investment management fees by $1,500 or more per year, we will give you a $50 gift certificate to Maque, Enoteca or Deseo Bistro in order to enjoy a true culinary experience in Winnipeg fine dining.

Colosseo Ristorante Italiano

1697 Corydon Avenue It doesn’t get more Italiano! Since home is where the heart is, this newly renovated family-run restaurant hosts you like one of their own - greeting you at the door, pouring the wine, serving up authentic southern cuisine and offering sweet Italian treats. Share-friendly Antipasti fire up the appetite with favourites like Salsiccia Calabrese Sausage sautéed with potato and peppers. The pizzas are a work of art, too! Especially with combinations like the “Canadese,” loaded with mushrooms, pork belly, onions and maple syrup. Likewise, signature Mezzo / mezzo - marrying Italian flavour to sushi - rolls up the likes of razor clams, shrimp, pine nuts, avocado, tobiko and spicy roasted red pepper.

404 Academy Road Florentine wood-fired delight! What started out in 2008 as a tiny spot for gourmet pizza has taken Winnipeg by storm. Inspired by tradition and realized with fresh local ingredients, you don’t have to be a gourmand to appreciate the flavours here - but it helps! That’s because, for starters, marinated olives are wood fired, brussel sprouts are roasted with pancetta and chili oil, and calamari comes with roasted garlic and fennel salad. And Gusto’s smokin’ pizza pies come with everything delicious, from caramelized onions, to fig jam, to roasted wild mushrooms, to Manitoba bacon, to arugula pesto and even truffle oil. To pair, 150+ wines hit every Italian compass point!

177 Lombard Avenue Some things should never change - especially when it comes to Italian food! This new spot in the Exchange District is owned by Venetian chef Adriano Bakhit and promises to gracefully take your taste buds back in time. Antipasti include classics like ham with melon, mussels and clams in white wine, and shrimp in olive oil and lemon. For pasta - spaghetti with meat sauce, gnocchi in four-cheese sauce, and seafood risotto are all prepared with traditional care. Still hungry? Romanesque plates include Veal Liver with onion and red wine sauce on polenta. For dessert, Tiramisu is a must.

691 Corydon Avenue Corydon’s “Little Italy” is getting a new lease on life with one of the city’s tastiest new spots for Italian. Immersed in sleek ultra-urban design you get to enjoy a fun but refined menu that’s lovingly prepared with fresh ingredients and dished out generous. Fritto Misto is how calamari ought be; a decadent mound of plump breaded shrimp, scallops, cauliflower and zucchini get deliciously dipped in fiery diavolo tomato sauce. For pasta, the house-made gnocchi is highly recommended. Wood-fired pizza’s also a must, with crust that’s crispy, smokey and chewy. To wash it down, cocktails are bang-on. Try the playful ‘n’ boozy Aperol Spritz!

Carbone Coal Fired Pizza

1580 Taylor Avenue & 260 St. Mary Avenue Coal oven? Sound crazy? Think again. Carbone Coal Fired Pizza will flip how you feel about coal cooking and pizza pies. That’s because of their coal fired oven - quick at making crisp homemade crust that’s got chew and a little char. The spacious and modern pizzeria often gets packed with family and friends. Carbone’s thin crust is appetizingly tossed up with organic prairie flour and adorned with fresh toppings in classic or creative combinations. But that’s not all; dips, soups and salad classics, sandwiches, and even chicken wings get the Carbone treatment for lunch, dinner, and take-out.

326 Broadway Avenue Tuscan-style Italian since 1986! Nestled in Amici’s inviting split-level dining room, you’ll relish romantic flavours for lunch and dinner. Mouthwatering Antipasti include gnocchi in herbed Brie cream topped with sliced beef tenderloin. Primi includes a divine Linguine con Frutti di Mare loaded with lobster, shrimp, scallops and mussels in bright tomato sauce, as well as the intriguing Sweet & Sour Cherry Duck. And get ready to lick your fingers! Finishing sweets include espresso-laced Tiramisu and a Floating Island of baked meringue on crème Anglaise. Feeling flirtatious? Head down to the newly renovated wine bar! Bombolini serves smart cocktails with casual Amici fare.

1-877 Waverly Street Contemporary Italian is made here with delicious ingredients and inspired cooks. You won’t find dining like this elsewhere - every recipe is unique and house-made. Mac ‘n’ Cheese lover? You’ll die for the Lobster Mac and Cheese. Chorizo sausage, macaroni and lobster are tossed in a four-cheese béchamel then topped with breadcrumbs and baked golden brown. For something a little more traditional, Cioppino, the classic Italian seafood stew offers up fresh mussels, hard-shell baby clams, king crab and tiger prawns in a spicy marinara bouillon. Gourmet pizzas made with handtossed dough are also irresistible. Monday’s are prime - mac n’ cheese and pizza go on special.

684 Osborne Street Savour the history - 30 years of it! That’s how long this gem has been serving authentic Italian in South Osborne. Must haves? Lemon Veal and Penne Vodka; the same goes for the Seafood Sambuca and Lemon Chicken. Mostly everything here is house-made, generously portioned and plated piping hot! Feeling adventurous? The Fusilli Alla Pistacchio will inspire with tender chicken breast and pasta lathered with creamy ‘n’ bright pistachio sauce and accented with sundried tomatoes and goat cheese. House specialities include the hearty Stromboli, a bread stuffed with cheese, sausage, ham, salami, capicollo, pepperoni, ham and garlic.

670 Corydon Avenue Over 43 years in the biz! That’s amore! And what’s even more? Colosseo is perfectly placed in the heart of Winnipeg’s little Italy! Embraced by rich classical Roman era style and treated to old-fashioned Italian hospitality, you’ll enjoy a wide range of modern and classic plates - all amply portioned. Antipasto includes the Eggplant Rotini rich with tomato sauce, ricotta and mozzarella. Cozze Pepate sees spiced mussels bathed in extra virgin olive oil, white wine and garlic sauce. Carne highlights veal in black olive. Raveworthy pizza gets tossed and sliced in a variety of combinations. And alongside the pastas, both are available gluten-free.

The Mitchell Block Restaurant and Lounge 173 McDermot Avenue Named after its 19th century Exchange District digs, this dine out is equal parts classic and contemporary. Inside, white stucco walls, table linens, sparkling glasses and discrete lighting promise something to be savoured. Meanwhile, Chef/owner Sean McKay cooks up creative starters like Bison Carpaccio elaborately garnished with capers, yolk shavings, parmigiano and puffs of crackling flash-fried beef tendon. For mains, fresh pastas get rave reviews; fettuccine is no exception, tangling up spicy dense chorizo and plump prawns with peppers and roasted corn in creamy saffron sauce. And cocktails are what the doctor ordered! Try the “Prairie Penicillin” - an invigorating honey-lemon blend of whiskey and ginger liqueur.

A spirited dining experience It’s hard to imagine that Winnipeg could not claim a First Nations bistro. Now, thanks to Peguis First Nation-born Christa Bruneau-Guenther, and investors like famed Dog Creek First Nation-born Hollywood actor Adam Beach, when an eagle flies over the intersection of Ellice & Sherbrook, it flies over Feast Café Bistro. Over 15 years of research into Indigenous foods has blessed Christa with the chance to craft a spirited dining experience that’s creative, approachable and tasty. Most of Feast’s bounty is sourced close to home; sunflower seeds, wild rice, berries, bison and beans are all foundational ingredients. And bannock, too - which comes irresistibly fried, crisp and chewy.

Make your home unique with an Artista design

Try that with pizza: Feast’s personal-sized Bannock Pizza comes with a crisp thin crust topped with rustic meaty accents like smoked bacon, grass-fed bison sausage or maple ham. Our vegetarian variation sees savoury oven-roasted butternut squash mingle with toasted pine nuts, green onions and white sauce, then covered with gooey mozzarella and cheddar, and drizzled with spicy chipotle cream. Dreamy. Indian Tacos take us on a Tex-Mex turn. Served up tostada style on fry bread or gluten free alternative, tacos are themed by the likes of Pow Wow (bison) and The Gatherer (vegetarian chili). Our selection, The Sundance, features mouthwatering slow-roast shredded maple chipotle chicken and piles on lettuce, cheddar, onion, roasted tomato, corn salsa and chipotle lime cream. And since Feast’s focus is breakfast and lunch, expect to be tempted with an amazing line-up of creative bannock sandwiches and burgers. Take the Bison Dip. This reinvention of a classic sees tender shredded bison get paired with melted Bothwell cheese, sautéed peppers, red onions, mushrooms, Feast BBQ sauce and horseradish mayo. Dipped in jus, this comfort is moist and warm. For a side, go for the house salad; it’s lively with field greens, peppers, cucumbers, feta cheese and red onions. Some crunch and sweet comes thanks to dried cranberries and Saskatoon dressing. Bannock for dessert? Why not? Pour on a coulis of Saskatoon berries and dollop some whipped cream - and presto - the perfect finish! But don’t forget the espresso bar! A creamy maple latte and classic Americano wash down our wholesome meal and get us soaring into the rest of our day. Keep your eyes on this cozy spot; one-of-a-kind feasts are in the making -- Buffalo Lasagna or Elk Stroganoff, anyone?

Warm up? Beer and sake. Kirin Ichiban Beer doesn’t translate into “Number One” for nothing. Brewed in a “first press process,” which extracts the purest flavours, this barley malted beer boasts smooth full-bodied gulps. For sake, a hot Gekkeikan Traditional is a herby citrus sip with a weighted mineral finish. Ready for the best nachos in the city? Hawaiian Shrimp Nachos see crispy wonton chips tousled with sensuous tempura shrimp, juicy pineapple and mango, smooth avocado and jalapeño, and cilantro accents. Smoked gouda melts it all together. Jaw dropping good!

FEEL FABULOUS

Not to be outdone, a Chef’s Special takes traditional sashimi to the tropics. Delicate Kanpachi (Amberjack) is served “tiradito” (thin) and sauced with jets of refreshing mango and passion fruit. Stunning to behold and sweet to bite. But did you know that Fusian’s got a beef? Wagyu beef: This Japanese speciality is famous for flavour and texture. Basically, it melts like butter in your mouth. And you can get Wagyu any way you want - as nigiri, sliders, grilled, sashimi or surf ‘n’ turf. Either way, red meat calls for red wine. Argentina seems apt; a deep purple Mixtus Shiraz/Malbec Mendoza brings on the plum and blackberry. Perfect match for our torched Wagyu Beef Roll - bundling soft snow crab and crunchy asparagus, and juiced up with fruit sauce. Another Chef’s Special, Mama Mia Roll, is full of surprises. Spicy Tuna is paired with cucumber and green onion, spiked with tempura flakes, layered with avocado and then topped with tasty torched sockeye salmon and hamachi. Smooth, crunchy and satisfying. Thirsty? Asahi Super Dry’s elegant bitterness and crisp taste clears the deck. Dessert gets adventurous with Matcha Anmitsu: A big green scoop of energizing matcha ice cream tops moist Japanese sponge cake. Delights like chewy rice cakes, azuki beans, condensed milk and coconut syrup also get tossed into this unique sweet bowl. Reservations recommended!

The owners are so committed to their mission, they have posted it on the wall of Perfect Pairs, a new specialty store that bills itself as the “the ultimate experience in oil and vinegar.” “Getting together with family and friends over a meal is special, “says Mike Deneka, who along with fiancé and business partner Giselle Riegel, own and operate Perfect Pairs. “We want to teach families and friends they can have a great meal at home, and have fun cooking it.” Located at Unit C, 2450 Main Street, Perfect Pairs features a variety of tastes and diversity of flavours that only the best extra virgin olive oils and premium aged balsamic vinegars can capture. “We have a tasting bar that features over 40 different flavours of extra virgin olive oil and flavoured balsamic vinegars,” Mike explains. “We will learn a customer’s flavour preference and then help choose the ‘Perfect Pairs’ to go

with it. We also have a pairing list that provides information on suggested pairings of olive oil and vinegar.”

Olive oils are stored in rows of stainless steel fusti, which are designed to keep the products fresh.

Perfect Pairs also offers private tasting parties where customers can invite their family and friends, Giselle points out. “When we hold a party, we pair plates for bread dipping and encourage the host/hostess to bring other foods such as fruits, veggies, cheeses and other foods to make up that unique flavour combination.”

Mike adds they were confident about their decision from the outset. “We grew up in this area, so we knew the community needed a store like ours.” He says their customers are primarily from the local area as well as surrounding bedroom communities such as St. Andrews, Lockport, Selkirk, and Oak Bank.

The Perfect Pairs olive oil and balsamic vinegar products come in four different sizes, ranging from 60 ml to 750 ml. “The 60 ml bottles are ideal and unique as a wedding favour,” Giselle says. Gift baskets, custom made or premade, start at under $25 and are suitable for any occasion. The store also offers boxed pairings, gift certificates and hostess gifts.

Most of the products at Perfect Pairs are locally sourced. They carry pastas from Steinbach, mustards made right here in Winnipeg, sea salts and a rub/dip line from Vancouver Island. Even the bread they use for dipping is from a nearby bakery, Giselle points out.

Stringent standards While Perfect Pairs is their own brand, the ultra-premium olive oil and balsamic vinegar come from a supplier in California, Mike explains. “Our supplier has been endorsed as having the highest quality extra virgin olive, and has stringent standards about where its product is sold.” The couple recalls their introduction to this concept. “It was an oil and vinegar tasting bar in Fargo. We were blown away by the variety of flavours and the freshness,” Mike says. “Giselle turned to me and said ‘we need to bring this concept back home’.” That’s when the idea for Perfect Pairs was born.

“If we can’t order from a local supplier, we will order form a Canadian one,” she says, noting the Olive Oil & Vinegar Lovers’ cookbook they carry is written by an author from B.C. “We support local business,” Giselle adds, “but our mission is to teach family and friends how to have fun making a great, quick meal at home.” After visiting the store and sampling the products, this writer was inspired to do just that! More information about Perfect Pairs can be found on their website at www.perfectpairs.ca or follow them on Instagram and Facebook. Watch for the Grand Opening of Perfect Pairs on March 12, 2016.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy BLACKSTAR David Bowie (ISO/Sony) The magician died two days after his new album’s release, and the amateur forensics began. This time, though, don’t blame public sorrowing – Blackstar isn’t the album some of us want it to be, but its many brilliant moments honour the artist who was always more than his persona, and make this the most entrancing David Bowie album since Station to Station. The 10-minute title song is every whiff as mysterious, without the assurance of rock and a guitar solo at the end. Instead, over a vaguely Spanish theme, electronically massaged vocals coo and lure us to reflect upon a hidden village, a day of execution and a solitary candle. Soon, the mist breaks, nudged open by saxophones and flutes and another mystical turn (“On the day he died”), with the ghost choir singing, “I’m a Blackstar” – an obscure gambit of undeniable beauty, deserving days of immersion. Additional days and nights may be invested in confidence with the frantic enigma of “Sue (Or in the Season of Crime)” and the heavy-gravity pull of “Girl Loved Me,” and there’s a wink to followers on the last track, “I Can’t Give Everything Away,” where a wayward harmonica flourish recalls one of Bowie’s most wistful moments from the past. The name of that song? “A New Career in a New Town” – he will surprise us yet.

THE NAMES Swimming (Factory Benelux import) The Names idolized Joy Division, so it was a coup when the Belgian band was signed in 1980 to the Manchester band’s label, Factory, and producer, Martin Hannett. Swimming, their 1982 debut, was singular, nonetheless. Singer/bassist/songwriter Michael Sordinia preferred cool to Joy Division’s cold, and his yearning singing was matched perfectly by keyboard player, Christophe Dan Tandt, who set frosty layers of organ and synthesizer, and rare, thrilling tumbles of piano (listen to his almost weightless solo against the magnetic pull of “Leave Her to Heaven”). The original album has been extended smartly with radio sessions and a few non-album singles, including “Calcutta” – a rush of a song with echoes, oddly enough, of early U2.

In the curve of absurdist British humour, the Bonzo Dog Band sits happily with The Goon Show and Monty Python, with more saxophones and better tunes. If there really was a pub called the Fool and Bladder, as late and gifted frontman Vivian Stanshall proposed, then this was the house band. Packing five albums into a budget-priced triple-disc set has left no room for liner essays or many extra tracks, but this is a rush, from the early Music Hall jazz and novelty songs, all brawling trombones and zany clarinet, through the increasingly sophisticated song writing of Stanshall and Neil Innes. For starters, try “My Pink Half of the Drainpipe” for its dizzying take on suburban propriety, the bizarre social tableau of “Ready-Mades,” or the wicked seaside sketches of “Postcard.”

This Giller-winning novel asks, “What would happen if dogs had human consciousness?” A group of dogs magically get this gift, or curse. Now able to communicate complex thoughts, the pack’s members get into dogfights both lighthearted and serious. Beautifully written (Alexis can sure write gorgeous, thought-provoking sentences), this is an original, thought-provoking, tragic, and heartbreaking book.

The Road to Atlantis (Turnstone Press) Leo Brent Robillard

Karyotype refers to the chromosomes characteristic of a species, but you don’t have to understand any genetics to read this powerful poetry collection that explores tragedies of ancient and recent history. The last poem, “Nothing is Lost,” based on the International Red Cross “Book of Belongings” and the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina, is one of the most moving things I’ve read in a long time. Spring Breeze Awaken out from under the dark winter blues and lighten up for spring. Lara’s hair has been lifted 10 plus levels to an ultra-light blonde. This is created with a 3-step process, sometimes requiring two or more visits to the salon, depending on the status of the hair’s health and quality. Using treatment additives such as Olaplex or Ultra Bond Seal help to preserve the integrity of Lara’s hair, preventing damage. After reaching this stage, many other popular colour choices are now possible, such as smoky pastels in silvers, pinks, blues and lilacs. Chunky and messy curl trends remain strong this season. Use a curling wand in various sizes for a variety of looks, or for the natural, tousled and windblown effect, try a Society favourite…a sea salt spray. So light, so breezy, so fresh. Taking beauty to new heights B Y L E I G H PAT T E R S O N

You could say that Gerald Pankiw has set the bar high, in many ways. Pankiw, owner of The Loft, a full-service salon, spa and bar, is elevating the salon experience to a whole new level. On your initial visit, you receive a warm greeting and special welcome package from The Loft’s friendly client services staff. Your stylist or esthetician takes you on a comprehensive tour of the newly renovated space before you settle in to sip a glass of wine and enjoy your service(s).

A renovated spa area now includes two service rooms devoted to skin repair treatments administered by highly trained estheticians. The popular Loft Signature Lift achieves amazing, rejuvenating results by using ingredients such as retinol, hydroxy acids and enzymes to help speed up cellular renewal, resulting in a healthy glow. Zero-gravity “Perfect Chairs” installed in the spa area let clients fully recline and enjoy a relaxing pedicure.

Welcome to The Loft, indeed.

Following their service, clients can extend their star treatment via the new in-house photography studio.

“We want our clients to have a great experience on their first, and every visit, from the time they walk in until the time they leave,” says Pankiw.

“Our guests can take beautiful photos of themselves – it’s fun and makes them feel fabulous!” Pankiw says.

Built in 1910, the salon’s 111 Fort Street location has a unique history. The building was first the Hudson’s Bay Company Mail Order Building and underwent several iterations before its conversion into a salon in 1989. Pankiw worked as a stylist for 15 years at this location. An entrepreneur at heart, he purchased the business in 2015 and gave it a beauty treatment of its own.

The Loft is home to a diverse and talented team of stylists and estheticians who are channelling Pankiw’s passion and vision to deliver high-end services in a fun, unpretentious atmosphere.

Among his updates in the open concept space is a gorgeous wine bar, where clients can relax over a full menu of beverages for purchase, including wine, beer, champagne and mimosas. “Adding the bar really changed the whole environment,” says Pankiw. “It’s a great place to sit, relax and people watch. Or you can set up your computer at the bar and work away while your hair is processing.”

Pankiw, with a background in education, leads ongoing training, mentoring and coaching sessions to help the team stay on top of industry trends and styles. They, and their clients, reap the rewards. A professional team, a stylish space and an enjoyable experience: it’s no wonder that The Loft has clients of all ages, from Winnipeg’s downtown to the suburbs and beyond.

The Moroccan-born artist, who now lives in Niverville, grew up among the red sandstone coloured houses and vibrant souks that characterize his home city of Marrakech. It’s where, at a young age, he apprenticed in the art of Zouaq; a decorative style of painting that originates from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries and is used to decorate homes.

The geometric patterns in Zouaq can include organic shapes and elements like leaves, flowers and intertwined vines. Laarissa creates his own stencils to help sketch his initial pattern. Then, using acrylics, he painstakingly paints the design with controlled movements using a special brush of donkey hair (from the mane).

Outdoor spaces come in myriad shapes and sizes. Some homeowners prefer to leave their backyards in a simple state, while others prefer an elaborate, exotic, private oasis. Despite their variety, yards all have one thing in common: they connect homeowners to the natural world. Pedro Gomes, CEO of Prelude Landscaping, understands his clients’ individual needs. A leader in landscape production, Gomes and his team excel in designing and developing beautiful open-air living “rooms.”

LEIGH

PATTERSON

BRING YOUR YARD TO LIFE

“We all have a passion for creating exciting and easy-to-maintain outdoor living spaces, and it shows,” says Gomes. Prelude Landscaping offers a full suite of services for any size project. The company can provide complete landscape design and installation of interlocking driveways, stone patios, retaining walls, fire and water features, steel and stone sculptures, and more. With an infinite selection of products available to homeowners, the Prelude Landscaping team

is proud to help their clients choose what’s perfect for their dream yard.

“The first step in helping someone achieve their personal oasis is to have them define their likes and dislikes about style, plants, trees, colour schemes, accents, hardscaping materials, and other landscaping elements,” says Gomes. “Then, we figure out a budget that works for them. Once the client is happy with their plan, we go for it - creating the backyard ambiance they’ve always wanted.” Whether you plan to transform your backyard into an elegant showstopper, a play area or a paradise, Gomes offers these helpful suggestions to bring it to life:
Fan the flames: Adding a fire pit or fireplace lends heat and ambiance to an outdoor space. An outdoor kitchen complete with built-in burners, barbecues and cutting stations enables you to enjoy the ultimate outdoor gourmet cooking experience. Water down stress: The sights and sounds of moving water are known to promote relaxation by lowering blood pressure and improving mental health. Professionally installed water features lend a therapeutic, spa-like tranquility to any yard. These can range from an exotic waterfall made of huge natural boulders to a pond, a fountain, or a bubbling planter.

36 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2016

OUTDOORL I V I N G

“Falling water releases negative ions into the surrounding atmosphere,” says Gomes. “And these ions have a profound positive affect on your physical wellbeing.” Another bonus: water features can also attract wildlife to your yard. Add art for the heart: Metal and stone sculptures are gaining popularity this season and can add signature flair to any yard. Gomes is constantly on the lookout for these unique art pieces when he travels, so he can make them available to Prelude Landscaping clients for their custom landscape projects. Modern, whimsical or traditional, these elemental sculptures visually harness the imagination to turn a landscape into a masterpiece. Enhancing your yard with some or all of these features will create a multi-dimensional space to lure you, your friends and guests outside. Prelude Landscaping is there to help you make the best of everything nature has to offer. Because Prelude Landscaping is a one-stop shop for all landscaping needs, clients can enjoy the benefits of working with one experienced and dedicated team to create outdoor extensions of their home. And they can do it quickly. “We can complete a yard soft scape and hardscape project in less than two weeks in some cases,” says Gomes. “So you have more time to entertain, relax and enjoy your investment.”

I actually lose sleep over the possibility of losing even one customer,” he says, adding that nothing feels better than when a customer returns after discovering the grass is not greener with other companies. “It’s inevitable in life for us all to come across challenges. It’s how we react to them that defines us and maintains stability and longevity for life and in business as well. I have learnt a lot over the years from my relations with my customers. When I was younger, I had the tendency to overreact when problems did arise. I started to grow and change after observing a customer, a prominent Winnipeg businessman, handle a crisis situation in his own organization by calmly saying, “We will deal with it.” Hearing and seeing that changed the way I observe and handle any issues in all aspects of my business and personal life,” notes Boychuk. “My vision for Lawn Boys is to give back to the community. As one of my long-term customers said to me many years ago “you have to give to get.” This is how I try to live my life as well as run my business,” he says, noting that he has never been one to reject a donation prize request for an important cause like the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a community’s sporting teams. “We are currently planning a couple initiatives to help increase safety in our communities.” Lawn Boys have been around for nearly three decades and Boychuk sees this as a great calling card. “I know this can be a very transient industry in regards to new businesses popping up and disappearing every year. This may be difficult for potential customers who may wonder if a company will be around for the long haul. We have staff that have been with us for years, and even university students who graduate come back for jobs till they get traction in their respective fields. At Lawn Boys we are people you know.” 38 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2016

OUTDOORL I V I N G Fitting in B Y L E I G H PAT T E R S O N The appeal of older, established neighbourhoods is undeniable. Large trees, expanses of lawn and a complementary blend of architectural styles are just part of their allure. Rebuilding a new home on a mature lot that’s in keeping with the neighbourhood’s character can be tricky. In the case of this impressive River Heights property, a new home design unites with thoughtful landscaping to strike the perfect balance. The homeowners enlisted the help of 3 Seasons Landscaping early in the homebuilding process. The 3 Seasons Landscaping team developed a full landscaping plan complete with hardscaping elements, to ensure the whole yard was in keeping with both the neighbourhood and homeowners’ vision. Hardscaping elements consist of a driveway set in Roman pavers, a travertine front landing, retaining walls and a large elevated travertine patio. Landscape lighting illuminates sculptures placed throughout the yard to further beautify and complement the architecture into the evening hours.

To connect the home to the yard, 3 Seasons prepared expansive garden beds planted with traditional varieties of shrubs and low maintenance perennials.

OUTDOORL I V I N G Tune in to outdoor fun B Y L E I G H PAT T E R S O N It’s hard to ignore the allure and distraction of electronic screens. They compete for our attention, leading many of us to spend more time on the couch than outside. But what if you could look out your window to your own backyard and get excited about being active? Athletic Flooring Systems has the answer with their multi-purpose game courts by Sport Court®. As the exclusive dealer in Manitoba and northwest Ontario, the company installs game courts for residential clients looking to bring fitness closer to home. Installed over any hard surface, a Sport Court provides a suspended play area to enjoy year round, without any maintenance. The specialized playing surface and robust components integrate together making it possible to play dozens of games. Homeowners can flood the surface in the winter, allowing the fun to continue with ice skating or hockey. While families enjoy their Sport Court and its many options for keeping active, adults and

seniors have also been using the courts for pickleball, a popular game well suited to the average size of residential installations. The patented, “ortho cush” and “lateral forgiveness” characteristics makes Sport Court one of the safest outdoor playing surfaces available.

Athletic Flooring Systems makes it easier to compete with the small screen with an exciting, safe, play area where you always know what your kids are up to. And when a basketball, hockey net, or tennis racquet are convenient alternatives to electronics, the whole family wins.

OUTDOORL I V I N G Site lines B Y L E I G H PAT T E R S O N When as much attention to detail goes into the design of a yard as it does into the home, the results can be beautiful and dramatic. That’s certainly the case here, where the clients entrusted Silver Stone Landscaping to transform their mature city lot and showcase their newly built home to its fullest advantage. Silver Stone owner Kyle Thibeault and his team created a seamless transition from yard to home, thanks to a smart, contemporary, lowmaintenance landscape that mirrors the home’s design. The Silver Stone team removed a number of mature trees to open up the yard and make way for spruce and amur cherry trees and a lush green lawn. They used linear hardscaping to anchor the yard and tie it closely to the home’s architecture. A Barkman “Dimensional” flagstone sidewalk, the square, two-tiered front planters and the concrete driveway inlaid with “Boardwalk” pavers mimic the shape of the home’s windows.

Subtle texture and colour add rich layers of dimension and softness while complementing the home’s façade. Chocolate brown mulch in the planters and crushed black granite along the sidewalk anchor perennials like grasses, hydrangea, barberry and spirea.

Filled with showy tropicals and other plants, huge planters flanking the entrance serve to naturally draw the eye up to the front door.

Take Back Your Patio

A

fter the long winter season, many Manitobans are itching to get outside. But often they find that rain, wind, and insects prevent them from truly enjoying springtime on their patio.

Glass sunrooms provide a trendy and flexible way to take control of your outdoor living space. One particularly popular product is a retractable sunroom from Lumon, a global company that specializes in versatile sunroom products for detached homes, condos, and high-rise buildings. Lumon’s sunrooms feature frameless glass walls, which provide unobstructed views and bright natural light while protecting the patio from dust, snow, rain, and wind. In perfect weather, the fully retractable walls give people the flexibility to have an open patio. Additional elements like screens and blinds are also available.

“A patio without a sunroom is controlled by any number of unpredictable factors, like the weather or mosquitoes,” says Lumon consultant Kazwel Levandoski. “With a sunroom, those things no longer determine how homeowners can use their outdoor space.” The company’s customizable sunroom options allow homeowners to have full control of the space. Parents can send their children outside to play in the sunroom even when it’s raining, and summer barbeques never need to be cancelled because of mosquitoes. Lumon’s retractable glass is also an ideal option for condo balconies. Adding the frameless glass creates an enclosed space that can be enjoyed more days of the year, and Lumon’s glass is the only balcony enclosure option on the market that meets zoning and construction regulations

for condos, making it easier for owners to receive strata approval. For all of their products, whether for detached homes, condos, or high-rise buildings, Lumon prides itself on quality design and customization to ensure each outdoor living space suits every homeowner’s unique style and needs. Their consultants offer no-obligation design consultations, and they can also draw up 3D design plans of the outdoor living space to help people visualize many different options. For homeowners who are craving better use of their outdoor living area, this spring is a great time to take back your patio space. Lumon is currently offering zero percent financing for 12 months, and only requires a $1,000 deposit to make those dreams a reality.

FIVE SIMPLE DESIGN HACKS TO CREATE KILLER CURB APPEAL

1

Pay attention to entranceways. Doors should be welcome openings to the inside of the home. Here brass or wood accents can make a positive first impression that can carry through to the style of the interior. Consider painting the front door to lend additional character.

2 Think FIBERGLASS First For Windows That Last!

Clean up the drive. As simple as just filling in the cracks and ruts or repaving with new Roman stones, the front drive is an opportunity as an eye-catcher. Carry this through to the doorway on the garage. It’s the biggest single opening in the home and a huge surface. If it needs replacing, there are plenty of stylish options available, from contemporary to traditional. At the very least, keep overhead doors clean and looking fresh.

3 4

Upgrade those old stair and porch railings and install new ironwork. Look to local metal shops for design innovation that can make your house stand out from the crowd. Green things up. Plant new sod on bare patches and edge the lawn. Look for a few areas that could use a plant or two and consider adding a tree for shade. Small well tended front veggie gardens can also add a unique touch to a home’s curb appeal as well as feed the family.

Energy Efficiency & Green Friendly • Durability Aesthetics • Available Colours • Stability

Give your home an accent. A simple touch such as a contrasting colour on window trim or the addition of shutters is a time-honoured way to pump up exterior appeal. If new windows are required, think aesthetics and function at once. Not only should performance be considered, street facing windows should also provide an abundance of curb appeal. Remember - first impressions are usually lasting ones!

Best Face Forward Here in Manitoba, exterior doors are a big deal. Indeed, a new or existing home’s street facing garage door is typically a property’s biggest single opening. With this in mind, it makes sense to pay attention to aesthetics and engineering attributes of entryways. Creative Door is here to help. Based in Edmonton, Creative Door is Canada’s leading dealer of access solution products. They offer a virtual one-stop-shop for everything from overhead doors to security gates to the very latest designs in garage doors. “The aesthetics of garage doors have changed over the years, “ says Creative Door Director of Sales and Business Development, Daryl Laprade. “Once the standard was colonial design. Now, homeowners have so many more choices that really work with the look of the house and offer significant benefits such as better security and more effective insulation,” he says, commenting that Creative Door offers the largest selection of colours and designs to satisfy any customer need. “The great look of new doors is one that really lasts over time. This means better curb appeal as well as low maintenance costs. The engineering has also stepped up with improvements that have motorized systems operating with less energy, more reliability

and more digital interfaces to Smartphone applications that allow homeowners to discover if doors have been opened and allow them the ability to remotely operate entryways.”

A Lasting Innovation For more than 60 years Accurate Dorwin had been helping Winnipeggers see the light. A leading manufacturer and installer of fiberglass window products, the company has been offering innovation in a range of products designed to deliver energy efficiency alongside great looks. According to Doug Nowlin, Director of Operations with Accurate Dorwin, the fact that the glazing and the frames are made from the same materials means consistent expansion and contraction across the entire window. Gone are the days when wood windows swelled with moisture becoming difficult to open and close during certain times of the year. The fact that the window frame and material expand and contract at the same rate results in less stress on the sealed unit, which results in less seal failures (glass becomes foggy). This also means no cracks

Windows are typically seen as a source of heat loss. Accurate Dorwin’s high performing fixed

“Accurate Dorwin has many glazing options available depending on what is important to the individual homeowner. Some people opt to take advantage of the UV light to help heat their house during winter, others prefer to block the heat coming into the house as much as possible,” says Nowlin. “We manufacture as well as install our own products. Our guys do the work and we stand behind our skilled installers. This is why we have become a ‘go to’ company for both residential and commercial work,” he says, inviting people to visit www.accuratedorwin.com for more details on this homegrown innovator. Let the Sun Shine In When Manitoba new homebuilder Hearth Homes needed to add a three-season sunroom to a showhome, they knew whom to call. Sunshade is a Winnipeg company that has been building the very best in exterior rooms for decades. Over that time they have also been building a reputation that is second to none in the industry. It’s engineering excellence that has attracted the attention of both homebuilders and homeowners. Consider that Sunshade is the only company in North America that can obtain permits to build sunrooms on un-piled decks. Indeed, Sunshade has perfected a unique floatation system that works seamlessly with older homes and new properties to keep sunrooms looking great for years and years.

“Our objective is to create a space in the house that is as much like the outdoors as possible. Once installed a Sunshade sunroom typically becomes the most used room in the house,” says company president Steve Sarens. In the Hearth Home’s showhome pictured here, Sarens had his skilled crew create a sunroom over the existing covered deck. Using extruded aluminum and tempered safety glass,

the crew created a three-season addition that was tailored to meet the changes in our climate. “We have noticed rainfall is becoming greater in our region so we adapted our design with tracking to accommodate more water. Now torrential rains are no problem and homeowners have a great place to sit and watch the storm in comfort,” says Steve, suggesting that a new Sunshade sunroom delivers a surprising amount of lifestyle for an outdoor area.

Easy Living By Kelly Gray Prairie Landing Apartments is working hard to simplify the lives of those 55 years of age and older. A growing demographic, these people are now seeking out less complicated living arrangements where the old family home might be sold off in favour of a smaller footprint lifestyle without grass to cut and attics to clean. Burnett Management is ready for this group with properties such as Kildonan Green Apartments, and their new Prairie Landing, a 152-suite, seven-storey apartment facility ready this summer in West Transcona at 20 Cal Gardner Drive off Peguis Street. “We were able to take our experience from the development of our Kildonan Green Apartments and use it to create something we knew would excite our target demographic,” says Rya Janzen, leasing manager. Here she mentions attributes such as large suites, convenient location, community and modern design as key elements that went into the planning. Suites at Prairie Landing range in size from 786 square feet for a one bedroom to 1119 square feet for a two bedroom.

50 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2016

“Everything except TV and phone is included,” she says, adding that nearby attractions include Club Regent, Kildonan Place Shopping Centre and Costco. In addition the “Shops of Kildonan Mile” on Reenders Drive, which will bring over 340,000 square feet of new retail to East Winnipeg. Kitchens feature luxury finishes as well as the latest in household appliances. Windows are oversized to let in lots of light, but they are also environmentally sensitive to keep apartments warm in the winter and cool in the summer. All suites are fully visitable for those with mobility challenges with wide doors for wheelchair access. More, the building is concrete construction - another plus that keeps suites quiet from any outside noise.

“The look of the building is unique. We used Kingspan insulated metal panels to clad the exterior and create a modern design that is unlike anything else in the Winnipeg apartment rental market,” says Janzen. The attraction to Prairie Landing, she says, is the ease of living. For example, the building features not just common areas where residents can gather, but has a fully equipped exercise facility and a multi-purpose room as well. There is an on-site theatre room in addition to two hospitality suites for visiting guests. “The idea has been to create a space for people age 55 plus that offers a sense of community in a comfortable, well appointed setting. We know that as people age and their children move away from the family home, there is a desire to make positive changes in lifestyle. People want to simplify and downsize, but they also want amenities. At Prairie Landing they can enjoy services such as 24-hour security and property maintenance, as well as the benefits of a live-in property manager.” Display suites will open this spring, and possession of suites will take place mid to late summer of 2016. A Place in the Sky Winnipeggers who want to reach for the stars will soon have their chance with the coming of SkyCity, a $175-million, 45-storey city centre tower that is expected to house 388 residential units, 60,000 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet of retail. “The idea,” says Fortress Real Developments President, Jawad Rathore, “is to create a mixed use high rise that offers residences and offices alongside commercial and light retail in a setting that is more in keeping with the needs of new urbanites who seek a live, work, play arrangement.” “When we looked at downtown Winnipeg we saw Toronto years ago, with its surface parking lots and empty buildings. We also saw a lot of opportunity in a great city with a lot happening. We wanted to be a part of the change.” Interest in the condos has been strong. In fact, SkyCity’s presentation centre sold 60 residences to its VIP guests on opening day of the public offering last September. This has been followed by still more sales as awareness and excitement has built. Today sales teams have inked agreements on over 35 percent of

available units. Condos range in size from 529 square feet to 1,609 square feet, and are priced from $196,000 to over $700,000. The design will create an iconic structure that will be the tallest building between Toronto and Calgary. Not surprisingly, buyers are drawn to the opportunity for tremendous views. They are also highly interested in the design innovations and amenities that are part of this masterplanned project. Plans call for an 8-storey commercial and service podium, which will offer retail on the ground floor, including plans for a grocer. The 8-storey podium also includes dedicated indoor parking for the residents, guests and commercial patrons. There will also be guest suites, a grand lobby, a dedicated fitness amenity floor complete with a basketball court, fitness centre, weights room, yoga studio, and spin room, as well as club style locker facilities. On the expansive rooftop, architects have drawn in a ‘Sky Lounge’ with indoor dining facilities, a games room, large screen theatre and an outdoor terrace overlooking the city. Given the breadth of the development, Fortress turned to the best and brightest for the design team and partners. For example, condo interiors are designed by Union 31, an award winning Toronto-based multi-disciplinary design firm that specializes in hospitality and condominium developments. The on-site gym will be a Movement Haus fitness centre that is created by another ‘best in class’ firm, The Benchmark Group, a nationally renowned company that specializes in a holistic approach to health and fitness. Scatliff + Miller + Murray are the landscape architects on the project, and sales

are being handled by Royal LePage Dynamic Real Estate. The guiding vision is one where people who live in the building will have a complete ‘under-oneroof ’ collection of services to make downtown urban living as convenient and service oriented as possible. Consider that for SkyCity residents a trip to the gym or grocery store could be done in the middle of a Winnipeg snowstorm without the use of a parka or car window ice scraper. As well, the new building would be attached to Winnipeg’s expansive skywalk system, making a coatless run out to attend a play at Prairie Theatre Exchange, take in a Jets game at the MTS Centre, or attend a business meeting a simple matter even amid the harsh realities of a Winnipeg winter. With available condos moving well, Fortress and their partners invite Winnipeggers to reach higher and get involved in this dramatic downtown Winnipeg concept by dropping into the sales offices at 275 Garry St. or visiting www.skycitywinnipeg.ca

Condo Revolution B Y C A R LY P E T E R S

The emerging transit-oriented development in South Osborne is something new to Winnipeg, so multi-family builder StreetSide Developments knew they needed to introduce a product to match.

Celebrating something special? Deseo Bistro is a regular on the list of the top restaurants in Canada, and is the flagship offering from celebrated local chef Scott Bagshaw.

Enter Parkline Townhomes, a series of upcoming two-storey townhomes with basements to grace Hugo Street South, right next to the Fort Rouge Rapid Transit Station.

The up and coming area has exemplary walkability and some of the best transit access citywide. Downtown commuters may find it easier to hop the neighbouring transit line to avoid costly parking fees and the routine hassle.

Unlike any other condo development in the city, some Parkline homes are equipped to have the basement finished as a self-contained suite, meaning you can use your desirable location and brand-new home as an income generator.

From the start to finish of your day, Parkline townhomes make everyday living easier. With no yard or home maintenance to take care of, there’s more time for the people and things you enjoy.

And the ease of upkeep doesn’t come as a sacrifice – the townhomes give the feel of a detached home, and come with many of the same perks. The townhomes present the opportunity for fenced-in private yards, which is ideal for pet owners or nature buffs to indulge in some backyard stargazing. StreetSide Developments anticipates an early 2016 launch for the first phase of its townhomes. Be first in line for the release and learn more details about Parkline townhomes, including floor plan information and availability at www.parklinetownhomes.ca

With thoughtful floor plans making exceptional use of space, the energy and cost savings of living in an attached townhome, and potential for cost and time savings on your everyday commute, Parkline makes home ownership more affordable and accessible than ever. Locals to the area already know about the neighbourhood’s draws – some of the city’s top-tier dining destinations reside in South Osborne, along with longtime entertainment venues like the Park Theatre and Park Alleys bowling centre. Lose yourself in the decadence and anonymity of a ‘20s speakeasy at Blind Tiger, or pop into Vera Pizzeria for delicious Neapolitan-style pizza in a cozy environment.

One of Winnipeg’s newest communities is ready when you are. Developed by Genstar, Bonavista is a 243-acre master planned community that will offer close to 1100 singlefamily homes at its site in southeast Winnipeg. Located just west of Lagimodiere Blvd on Warde Avenue, plans call for 20 acres of public reserve that includes a 14-acre recreational hub, as well as 30 acres devoted to a variety of multi-family developments. “We have finished servicing of Phase I, which means everything is ready to go for home building on these first 119 lots,” says Marc Brown, Development Manager, Genstar. He reports that the community will feature eight phases over the seven to 10 years it will take to build out the new neighbourhood. Now, with the completion of the first phase the lots have been released to Bonavista’s group of new home construction companies. “Interest has been strong from the public who have been excited by the premier location and the modernization of the traditional suburb,” he says. The neighbourhood will offer a variety of lot types including

conventional front drive lots, laned lots, and park and lake lots. According to Brown, they expect the first showhomes to be ready for viewing by this fall in time for the Parade of Homes. He suggests that there is much to be excited about. For instance, Bonavista will be a community oriented, life cycle neighbourhood with a variety of housing options where people can grow up, start a family and retire with all the modern amenities, services and facilities they need in close proximity. As well, the community is designed to promote neighbourhood wellbeing through healthy environment and lifestyles.

Bonavista’s grid layout gives homeowners the potential to reduce heating and cooling expenditures and emissions. Bonavista also supports healthy living by providing various opportunities for active transportation, recreation and leisure activities. Green spaces offer a desirable balance of active and passive recreation opportunities, and Bonavista’s central Recreation Hub creates a focal point for a connected, healthy community. Along with walkable streets provided by Bonavista’s grid layout, multi-use pathways create scenic linkages between green spaces and naturalized wetlands,

giving you the space to enjoy fitness, relaxation and peace of mind. “Expect to see the most modern of new home designs alongside more traditional plans,” says Brown. “There are opportunities here for the full range of new home experience, from estate homes to starter properties to move up homes to 55+ homes. Bonavista will offer it all, and it will do it with a unique modern style that will make it one of Winnipeg’s character communities.” Visit www.livebonavista.com for more information.

Key elements such as the use of low impact development infrastructure, healthy and active lifestyle amenities, and modern architectural design percolate through Bonavista and are foundations of the new neighbourhood. For example, four naturalized wetlands provide filtration for storm water runoff, minimize impact on downstream waterways and create a significant habitat for wildlife. As well, the maximized solar exposure homes receive due to

Instant Classic B Y C A R LY P E T E R S Sometimes when you walk into a showhome, it’s difficult to envision your family living there. However, that is not the case with Discovery Homes’ most recent showhome at 141 Willow Creek Road in Bridgwater Trails. This two-storey, urban-style farmhouse was recently honoured as a Parade of Homes Gold Award winner, and features details and a design that makes an almost instant fit with families. Inside the four-bedroom home, the atmosphere is light and airy, with an open concept great room, dining area and kitchen. This relaxed comfortable style is experienced through the kitchen’s painted cabinets, granite-topped island, tiled backsplash, and extra-large farm-

second floor also houses a large laundry space and the master suite. Designed to feel like a spa, the master ensuite features a custom shower made up of four different varieties of natural stone and tile, as well as a soaker tub and quartz countertops.

In keeping with this family oriented home, the main level has a large mudroom with custom designed cabinets and cubbies, perfect for the children’s coats and shoes, as well as a two-piece powder room.

Discovery Homes, a Master Builder, has received numerous awards by the Manitoba Home Builders Association over the years, garnering the company three bronze, three silver and two gold awards from the Parade of Homes for their designs that have been featured in Winnipeg, La Salle, Stonewall, and custom built properties.

Realtor® Mark Penner wants people to know they have choices. Penner is marketing Countryside Crossing, a new development located just inside Winnipeg’s Perimeter but with an East St. Paul postal code. Unlike most new home developments, Countryside Crossing allows buyers to choose the lot and then decide on home design and builder. “This site offers the best of both worlds. You get close proximity to all the attributes of Winnipeg, yet you are located inside the municipality of East St. Paul where taxes are lower and lot sizes tend to be more expansive,” says Penner. Countryside Crossing offers 154 country-sized fully serviced lots ready to be built on. All infrastructure including parks, landscaping and fencing is complete. Currently, Penner and his team are working to sell the remaining properties in the second phase. “The community is 75 percent sold, but there is still a good selection of very desirable lots,” he says, noting that many of the properties on offer feature water access and look across to established custom homes that have creek front walkouts.

While Countryside Crossing offers a slate of four of the province’s leading new homebuilders - Maric Homes, Warkentin Homes, K.Streu Homes, and Irwin Homes buyers have been excited to discover they are not restricted to just these builders. In fact, if designs meet the architectural guidelines and building codes, buyers are free to develop as they see fit. And, says Penner, purchasers are looking to designs that utilize the large lot size to create country living masterpieces.

“Here the lots are large, with averages around 10,000 sq. ft. This means lots of privacy and room to develop a new home that has space for families to grow, and space for all the toys that make country living so much fun.”

space, while the glass doors on the upper level keep the space feeling open.

The main floor is completed by a master suite that boasts a seating area, as well as an ensuite, additional bedrooms, which all feature walk-in closets, and a mudroom with custom shelves, hooks, and cubbies perfect for family members to stash their things.

Family Friendly In today’s market it may be tough for a family to find a home that meets all their needs maybe the house is the right size, but the yard is too small; there might be enough bedrooms, but not enough kitchen. Warkentin Custom Homes was keeping families in mind with their Stoneridge Meadows showhome at 3 Barnes Place in Stonewall. The home is located on a quiet cul-de-sac - great for front yard play without the worry of traffic - and also sits on a treed lot with green space in the back. The exterior of the craftsman-style house features James Hardie siding in an evening blue that’s complemented by natural coloured stone accents, as well as a front verandah. Inside the three-bedroom, 1,700-squarefoot bungalow the kitchen makes for a great gathering space to cook or just enjoy time together. The oversized walnut island with white quartz counters offers up plenty of seating and a great cooking prep area with a large farm-style sink. The floor-to-ceiling cream cabinets offer plenty of storage and pantry

The 10-foot ceiling in the living area, along with the large windows, keeps the airy ambience, while the oak old-world flooring and custom walnut entertainment unit give the space an inviting feel

If you can dream it, we can build it. FOUR TIPS TO PICK THE PERFECT LOT www.kstreuhomes.com Kurt Streu t: 663-2170 e: kskstreu@gmail.com f: 663-4987

1

Research the communities you’re interested in and zero in on the ones that offer the best blend of lifestyle and location. Do you want bike paths and nature or is it urban convenience and luxury that interests you? Where is the lot in relation to work and social life? Is there access to transit and main auto routes? Develop a checklist of must-haves and keep a score as you tour nieghbourhoods.

2

Get a bird’s eye view. Technology now allows us to access satellite images of locations. Get on the Internet and have a look at the lay of the land. Satellite shots help lot / new home buyers better understand where the forests are, how traffic would impact their new home, and show area development density. Is the new development close to industry or active agriculture operations that can impact quality of life? A view from the sky can help answer these and other questions.

3

View the property at different times. A lot for a new home is just too important to leave it to a simple single drive by. The lot should be viewed at least three times and each of these occasions should be at different times of the day to give a good idea about what is happening in the development in terms of light, traffic, and activity.

4

Consider the lot with an eye to the other homes in the community and what your lifestyle demands in terms of square footage. Do the existing homes take up lots of property space and leave little in privacy between neighbours? Would the lot you consider allow you to fully enjoy your lifestyle in relation to those next door?

Details, Details Without those added details, a house isn’t truly a home. That’s why K. Streu Homes puts points of interest into each design they create, ensuring a unique experience for every homeowner. The pictured 1,600-square-foot bungalow in East St. Paul features just a few of those custom touches. Light filters through the entryway, thanks to a glass front door flanked by large windows, as well as a large window over the basement stairs allowing sunlight to flow into the lower level. The large living room is divided from a cheery sunroom by a twosided fireplace surrounded by floor-to-ceiling high-gloss white tiles. The modern materials continue into the kitchen with high-gloss white European cabinets, stainless steel kicks to match the appliances and stove hood, granite countertops, and a nine-foot island which houses a professional-grade sink and a wine rack.

The lower level houses a second bedroom, as well as a flex room perfect for an office or den. The unique feature wall with walnut wood

detail, which hosts an electric fireplace, boasts coloured lighting under the hearth for an inviting glow in the entertainment area, which also includes a walk-up bar and extra space for additional seating or a home gym.

Styled by Design What defines your style? Contemporary, classic or a combination of both? When building a home, or renovating a space, style doesn’t always have to be one thing, or be the thing that’s “right now.” Looking beyond what’s been done before ensures that your home not only stands the test of time, but also becomes uniquely you. Over the past 35 years, Pine Creek Homes have seen and built every style of home. While they are well known for creating rustic details, the company has also created contemporary designs based on a blend of models. The renovated kitchen in this East St. Paul home utilizes a mix of contemporary, clean lines with the warmth of natural accents. The rift-cut cherry cabinets are enhanced with modern, sleek hardware, while the earth-tone glass tiles ground the stainless steel appliances and modern light fixtures. The highly functional space was also opened up so that people in the dining room could share in the experience of what was happening

in the kitchen. The L-shaped quartz-topped island beckons guests to pull up a seat in front of a gas fireplace, while the lower portion offers up a perfect place for preparation. Pine Creek Homes specializes in both new builds and major renovations, such as

this kitchen, which may require structural elements to be modified. They also focus on personalized service when developing a new home design, or renovation plan to ensure that whatever your style is, it will be timeless to you.

“Our realtor brought us to Oak Bluff West and at first, we thought it felt so far away, but what we found when we kept going back is that it’s a quick drive to all amenities; shopping, entertainment, banking, you name it… all within 10 minutes,” explains Karen Geist-McNeill, who moved to the community this past July.

We find that we spend less time at our cottage, which we never thought would happen! We just really love our home and love the area and its peacefulness.”

“Qualico Communities had an open house and we got a look at their plans for the future of the community – we were quite impressed. We also had a chance to speak to the landscape architect; looking at the different ponds and natural grasses, you really get the sense of being in a rural community.” Oak Bluff West is located by the town of Oak Bluff, where McGillivray Boulevard meets the Perimeter Highway. Home with a Purpose 45 East Plains Drive in Sage Creek truly represents Artista Homes’ style - both aesthetically and socially. The home is currently the St. Boniface Mega Millions Lottery’s top prize, and features a uniquely styled living space that encompasses the whole home. The 3,500-square-foot home features multiple levels to give each area a sense of its own space, but still keep the open-concept feel with high ceilings, ample windows, and glass partitions. A particular focus on the main floor is the home’s kitchen, which features a unique mix of materials and coloured cabinets - one in flat olive, and the other in a medium wood grain. The extra large island, unlike most designs, has been left without a sink or cooktop so homeowners can use it to its full potential. The kitchen overlooks the living room, which boasts 19-foot ceilings, walls of windows, and a linear fireplace with Tyndall stone surround. On the same level is an impressive floor-toceiling custom wine rack set along a Tyndall stone wall and enclosed in glass.

Two sets of stairs reach the second floor; one being dedicated solely to the master bedroom. The suite has its own balcony overlooking the lake, as well as a stunning ensuite with standalone soaker tub, and custom tile shower with a body spray system. Boasting custom millwork, the suite’s walk-in closet is as visually appealing as it is functional.

Along with two additional bedrooms, the second level features a glass catwalk, a sitting area, and a large front balcony.

The homes hosts three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with walk-in closet and an ensuite, which features heated flooring, dual sinks, a soaker tub, and five-foot tiled shower. The main floor also features a separate laundry room with sink.

Pageantry Homes continues offering building options in new exciting developments within city limits, including lots in Scotswood Meadows, as well as rural options in Kingswood South.

The lower level rounds out the luxury experience with 10-foot ceilings, modern fireplace, games area, wet bar with a custom wine rack, and another bedroom.

Rural Living, City Life If you want to live a dual life, the development of Whistler Hollow is perfect. Large lots, green space, and public access to the adjacent Red River make it feel rural, but homeowners living in the development still benefit from City of Winnipeg sewer, and its close proximity to neighbourhood amenities and downtown Winnipeg. Pageantry Homes’ bungalow at 237 Loganberg Drive in the West St. Paul development features 1,813 square feet of living space, made to feel vast and open with high ceilings, ample windows, and natural colouring and materials throughout. The living room features a floor-to-ceiling stone face wall with an inset linear fireplace, while the large dining area in the open concept space offers enough room for an eight to 10-person table. Guests will be further wowed by the bar area included in the kitchen. Two rows of wine racks flank frosted glass, lift-up cabinets, while below, two pullout drawers offer more space for additional bottles. Along with a seven-foot island, the kitchen also boasts a walk-in pantry and stainless steel appliances.

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

Sage Creek Has a Style All Its Own B Y: K I K I N N O VAT I O N Sage Creek is a new kind of neighbourhood. It looks different, it feels different and it’s changing Winnipeggers’ perceptions of what a residential development should be. Aaron Hirota, Senior Landscape Architect at McGowan Russell Group and a Sage Creek resident, has played a key role in the design aesthetic of the community. “Our office was brought in at the inception of Sage Creek. We began working on early concepts with Qualico, and then, as the project moved ahead, we worked on entrance features, the aesthetic development of Sage Creek, as well as construction drawings for the trail system and park areas,” he explains. “First and foremost, the design comes from the theme of going back to nature. From the beginning we set about honouring that vision by incorporating a simple palette of design elements including native plants, stone and woods that repeat throughout the development; these natural materials give the feeling that the community has been there for a long long time.”

This dedication to creating and maintaining an innovative look and feel doesn’t stop at the pathways and trails; it continues into the design standards Qualico has set for the community’s builders. To ensure diversity in terms of design and the types of homes available in the community, Sage Creek boasts a wide assortment of builders offering single family homes, sweeping estate homes, townhouses, condos and even luxury laned homes with rear three-car garages. “As a resident, I like the fact that this is a development with such an assortment of housing types,” he explains. “There’s a wide range of architectural designs and they try to keep the controls pretty high. What this means is that there is a lot of detail going into the housing stock and that the community as a whole is nice to look at. It’s not a constant repetition of cookie cutter housing. Qualico is trying to keep the area as architecturally rich as possible.” Going back to nature is the vision; this has been honoured through a dedication to nature conservation and walkability. Sage Creek is home to 27 acres of wetlands and 66 acres of native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees serving as habitat and shelter for native birds and animals. These native grasses absorb carbon from the air, purify the soil, and also make for unbelievable sunset walks. “The goal is to have a complete community with a variety of housing types and commercial spaces – a community where residents have the ability to walk to the grocery store, shop and dine in the community or play in the park with their kids. It’s a special community as you can

do all kinds of different activities without having to get into your car and go somewhere.” Liveability and walkability are the hallmarks of life in Sage Creek, and new commercial ventures continue the evolution of the community. What was a simple plot of land 10 years ago now boasts over 1,200 homes, as well as commercial amenities including grocery shopping, banking, gas, veterinary services, a dentist, restaurants, coffee and more. 2016 will see even more retail ventures open in the community, with the addition of a family friendly bar and grill, dance studio, fitness studio and medical practice.

“Part of what I like the most is that it’s a Qualico development,” explains Rob Wickstrom, President of Hearth Homes. “They’re a company that stands beside their builders in keeping their residents happy. I like the fact that it’s maturing now, with a new school and playground coming soon, shopping, and all the necessities you need. It’s really coming into its own.” SPRING 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 79

Showhome skillfully styled by Labossiere Divine Interiors Even though he makes his home in Manitoba, Heinz Albers, owner of H. Albers Builders, likes to travel the globe. His favourite destination for inspiration is Europe, where home design trends are very different from the North American market, taking romantic luxury and pairing it with contemporary simplicity. The company’s current showhome at 10 Water Lily Lane in Sage Creek offers some unique elements unseen in the Manitoba market, thanks to his eye for European style. It’s apparent from the exterior, which features cultured stone and textured acrylic stucco, the design is unlike any other in the province. From the mahogany garage door to

the curved front entrance awning, the two-storey showhome offers some innovative and interesting visual elements. As you step into the 2,400-squarefoot home, you’re greeted by large windows, soaring ceilings, and modern cream tile flooring, outlined by blue-grey ceramic tile inlays which create a border before moving in to the main area of the home. Rows of inset LED lighting, provided by Super-Lite, line the top of the two archways that define the dining area from the living room. Additional lighting fixtures, such as the pendants above the island and bedroom recessed lighting, are also energysaving fixtures - something

Albers says is very much a part of European homes - provided by Super-Lite. Cappuccino-coloured maple floors flow throughout the open concept dining and living space, as well as the kitchen. This area pulls in a real European influence with a mix of high gloss white and walnut cabinets, which feature grains going in all directions for visual contrast and interest. The eight-foot island also features walnut detailing with a cream-based granite countertop, while more high gloss can be found on the ceramic tile backsplash. The same ceramic tile surrounds the inset fireplace in the living room’s custom-designed entertainment SPRING 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 81

centre. Here again the walnut accents draw the eye in different directions for unique definition. With massive windows, and a 14-foot ceiling, the space is filled with natural light. A glass railing staircase leads up to the second floor, which features four bedrooms, two baths, and the master suite. The master bedroom’s vast ensuite boasts a soaker tub, complete with chandelier, double sinks, granite countertops, and a custom-built, four-foot-by-four-foot tiled shower which offers a granite slab for sitting and enjoying the adjustable showerhead. The master suite also boasts an ample-sized, carpeted walk-in closet.

While other showhomes may employ a certain style, application alone is not enough.

Knowledge, know-how, and skilled craftsmanship are also required. H. Albers Builders are able to show that homes with solid design, free of fads and trends are a smart investment for years to come. The craftsmanship complies with the company’s high standards, which includes a fantastic selection of colours for exterior and interior applications, as well as multiple precious wood options.

The Excitement Continues B Y

Winnipeg’s South Pointe community has stood out as one of the city’s most popular new home developments. The reasons are many. Master planned by Ladco, South Pointe offers parks and walking paths as well as wetlands that contribute to the community’s highly liveable lifestyle. More, the neighbourhood is home to great new home designs from Manitoba’s leading builders that work to create a contemporary setting. South Pointe is also well connected to fabulous shopping areas, points such as the University of Manitoba and Victoria General Hospital, as well as offering quick access to roads out to cottage country. South Pointe is also home to stateof-the-art education facilities. The Pembina Trails School Division reports École South Pointe School will open for the 2016 / 2017 academic year with a new Kindergarten to Grade 8 facility. The school will service up to 800 students and offer 74 preschool spaces. Located on an 8.8-acre site at 615 Kirkbridge Drive, residents of South Pointe can expect to find facilities for special needs, a resource centre and library, music room, PhysEd and health

facility, outdoor learning area as well as practical arts classroom. According to David Borger, Ladco’s Vice President of Land Development, the popularity of South Pointe has been consistently strong. He reports that of the 1,400 lots on offer in the completed first phase only 130 are still up for sale. “We have completed all the servicing. This section has a very finished, mature neighbourhood feel to it,” he says. With the completion of Phase I of South Pointe, Ladco is moving west across Kenaston to develop 640 acres in its new Prairie Pointe community. According to Ladco’s Development Officer Tyler Smith, they are working on the first 200 lots in the first phase.

At 640 acres, Prairie Pointe will be a slightly larger than South Pointe at build-out. According to Smith and Borger, the new section will offer about 2,200 lots and will include facets such as 75 acres of space for multi-family properties such as condos and townhomes. And like South Pointe, the new development will hook up to the Active Transportation Network and its myriad of bicycle paths, as well as transit and main auto routes. “We will also offer a full slate of parks and ponds, as well as walking

paths,” says Smith, who adds that they have planned for 50 acres of commercial space to offer key services, such as light retail and professional. Here David Borger concludes that with South Pointe now largely behind them, they are taking what they learned and using it to create yet another successful new home community amid a long list of development masterpieces. Stay tuned for more excitement as Ladco ramps up the action in southwest Winnipeg.

“We will also offer a full slate of parks and ponds, as well as walking paths”

“We started sales in November 2015 and have already sold 70 lots,” he says, noting that they will utilize a 13-company new homebuilders’ group of which members comprise the Who’s Who of Manitoba residential construction firms.

Setting the Bar BY TODD LEWYS For nearly 30 years, Huntington Homes has earned the reputation for setting the bar to the highest level for building top-quality custom homes. “That reputation is no accident,” said Rob Swan, who co-founded the company with brother Sheldon in 1987. “From the start, our personalities – we’re both very detailoriented, and are perfectionists by nature – defined our building philosophy. It hasn’t changed one iota in the last 29 years. Our goals are still the same: to build homes to the highest possible standards, and to develop a systemized approach to help clients enjoy building their new home from start to finish.”

Today, Huntington’s building specifications are second-to-none in the industry. Consequently, it’s a given that every Huntington home will be fashionable, functional, last for a lifetime and be a great investment. There’s another intangible that Huntington brings to the table every time they build a home - the uncanny ability to make the entire building experience an enjoyable one. “I believe that no other builder incorporates the type of systems and checks that we have to ensure a smooth, seamless process which yields a positive experience for our clients. Our finely tuned systems take the stress out and put the fun

in,” said Swan. “Our proprietary Quotemaster pricing / scheduling software ensures accurate pricing that will keep you on budget and on time,” Swan said. How is that achieved? “By guiding clients from the design stage through the building stage and beyond. At the outset of every project, we provide a design questionnaire that enables us to quickly zero in on client wants and needs,” he explained. “Our clients are involved in every part of the design / build process. They’re even given keys so they can access their home to see how it’s progressing, and dream about how it will look and feel when they move in.”

While many builders disappear once clients move in to their home, that’s not the case with Huntington Homes. “Clients can call or email us any time after their home is completed, for even the smallest questions. Clients not only have our reps’ cell numbers, but they have mine as well,” Swan said. “After all, this is their dream home. If it isn’t perfect in every way, we haven’t finished our job.” For more information on Huntington Homes’ fun, seamless building process, visit huntingtonhomes.com or call (204) 979-3870.

Cutting edge designs – uncompromising standards Maric Homes has built a legendary reputation over 40 years using a simple formula: unparalleled attention to detail, cutting-edge design and technology, and luxurious touches all executed with uncompromising standards. This simple approach to a complicated task is on full display at their four spectacular showhomes located throughout the city.

28 Waterstone The flagship showhome in South Pointe is a full expression of Maric Homes’ design principles. The interaction of light and space is the fundamental component of this home’s theme – bright and airy, but never overwhelming or cold. By blending structural components with the beautiful finishing materials Maric is known for, a rare aesthetic balance is achieved. Steel beams and fir timbers share space with glass, maple, ceramic tile, quartz and bamboo.

100 Lake Bend Road Beautiful Bridgwater Lakes is the inspiration and backdrop for this home’s exquisite aesthetic and clean layout. The kitchen and living room are flanked by two separate outdoor decks, bringing the beauty at hand right into the home. A one-of-a-kind, custom-made steel, glass, and wood staircase frames the view from the modern, expansive, galley-style kitchen. The master bedroom’s walk-in closet and ensuite truly evoke a spa-like setting, and the professional-grade HD golf simulator in the lower level only emphasizes the unique nature of this residence.

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

Sage Creek is the perfect neighbourhood for families – the strong sense of community and spectacular prairie beauty are the perfect setting for Maric’s stunning walkout bungalow design. This home was built with family in mind, focusing on many features overlooked by a conventional builder – miles of storage, an oversized mudroom and laundry room on grade with the garage floor, five bedrooms, and multiple large, separate entertaining spaces on both main and lower levels. Gorgeous finishing touches are present in every room: from the master walk-in closet, to the detail walls separating the dining room from foyer and kitchen, the subtly beautiful entertainment wall in the living room, and the incredible bar millwork in the lower level.

15 Willowside Bend Countryside Crossing in East St Paul is a coveted address as it affords the homeowner the charm and quiet of rural life, while never being further than a couple minutes away from all the amenities of the city. Maric Homes incorporated its trademark beauty and attention to detail into every corner of this spectacular two-storey showhome. The mudroom and kitchen have an incredible amount of storage, the double-height great room lets in sunshine aplenty through all four seasons, and the fully finished lower level creates a third level for the kids to feel like they have a space of their own. Although Maric’s approach to building is simple, the dedication to these principles has resulted in some of the most beautiful and uncompromising homes in the country. All four of these astonishing showhomes are open for viewing and available for purchase. Please call to set up an appointment today.

Does it seem like that pile of dirty clothes never gets any smaller? With LG’s latest Twin Wash system and companion appliances, all available at Dufresne, ensure you’ll spend less time on clothes and more time on life. LG has created the innovative Twin Wash to help you divide and conquer your laundry by letting you wash two loads at the same time. Do a big load in the frontloading washer up top while the smaller LG SideKick unit simultaneously washes a second load down below. Save up to 30 minutes per load with the TurboWash, cutting the wash time by half without shortcutting cleaning and performance, even on larger loads. With a combined capacity of up to 6.6 cubic feet, Twin Wash not only washes more laundry faster, it’s also easier to use. It boasts an

ergonomically elevated and angled door that makes loading and unloading faster, as well as a control panel located on the door, right at your fingertips. Not looking for an entire new system, but maybe an upgrade to your frontload washer? The SideKick pedestal washer can be added to almost any LG frontload washer from 2009 or later. With the capacity of one cubic foot, the SideKick is perfect for smaller or delicate loads. When combined with your LG frontload washer, you can watch those seemingly unending piles of laundry disappear. A great timesaving feature is LG’s steam technology located in the dryer. This option refreshes up to five garments in as little as 10 minutes to revive clothes, remove odours, and reduce wrinkles without washing.

For hard to wash garments, or items that just need a pop of freshness, the sleek LG Styler relaxes wrinkles and removes odours in minutes. The LG Styler takes special care of suits, dresses, shirts, knitwear, and more. TrueSteam technology combined with the Styler’s Aroma Kit reduce stale odours that cling to fabric, while remaining gentle enough for delicate materials. “The Styler can save time - ironing will become a thing of the past with fewer trips to the dry cleaner too. The other benefit is being able to protect from allergens, which is a big concern for many people these days,” adds Bryan Cripps, Dufresne’s appliance category manager, adding customers can take the LG Styler, SideKick, and Twin Wash for a “spin” in Dufresne’s showroom.

GOOD FIT FOR FLOORING The team at Design Shop understands the need to pay attention to flooring, and how materials, palettes, and surface textures work together with the overall plan. This is why they turned to local supplier, The Floor Show, on a recent project in Tuxedo where their drawings called for select flooring, tile and specialty finishes. According to Design Shop’s Debbie Golub, they do a lot of preliminary work on materials and products from each project they engage. It was after doing a lot of homework that they selected The Floor Show as a supplier. “We love the way they do their installs. They are meticulous,” she says, noting that this is just one of the reasons Design Shop works so closely with the Winnipeg-based flooring contractor. “We get their advice on how to best

94 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2016

install the finishes and they introduce us to new exclusive lines that will help distinguish our work. They’re very helpful in our process.” In a recent Tuxedo project, Design Shop’s design called for five-inch wide brushed white oak engineered wood flooring that was laid throughout the home’s main floor. On the second level, the family room, and on the stairs, the team at The Floor Show laid premium quality Arabesque carpet with a top-of-the-line 22 lb. underlay. Together with the client, the design team chose a high-end commercial premium patterned metallic vinyl sheet flooring for the mudroom / laundry room. In the kitchen, Design Shop specified an impressive handmade crackle finish glazed ceramic tile that was used for the

backsplash. For the living room fireplace, they installed 12 x 24 Tyndall stone and a decorative 3D custom stained wood block on the feature wall beside it. Behind the success of the reno / design project was a team that offered the kind of information and feedback that help remove some of the anxiety that is so often present in home construction projects. Golub reports that staff at The Floor Show were not just knowledgeable on product, but were able to discuss material price points, lead times on deliveries as well as scheduling and more. “Good communication and experience are the groundwork we’ve laid for success,” says The Floor Show Sales Associate and Project Manager, Derek Turland. Derek worked on the

DESIGN&DECOR Tuxedo project and suggests that the installations went so smoothly because of the synergy between players such as himself, the designer, and the contractors. “We work to get to know each other and establish a relationship based on understanding of the job’s unique needs. Then it’s up to us to perform,” he says, remarking that he is involved in every step of the project, from measuring to providing a quote, from the sale through to the delivery and management of materials. Both Turland and Golub remark that with every job come challenges that require special solutions. For example, the fragile handmade Arabesque tiles for the kitchen backsplash were difficult to cut. Here, everyone was informed quickly and a new plan was set in motion to create a minor change to the pattern. In another example, one of the chosen flooring materials was unavailable from the factory. “As soon as The Floor Show knew, we knew,” says Debbie, who points out that the substitute had already been discussed, but was sidelined over price. “The Floor Show worked with us to stay within the original budget,” she says.

L-R Debbie, designer, Darren, sales rep, and Suzy, client

Golub suggests they see their relationship with The Floor Show as being part of a winning team where customer focus and satisfaction is the end result. “We never feel like we are getting a sales pitch. The information is transparent. If there’s ever an issue, they work with us promptly and proactively. They don’t have a short-sighted perspective, which is why they’re a good fit for us.” For more information on great flooring and design solutions, visit: www.thefloorshow.ca and www.design-shop.com The Floor Show 1042 Waverley St. Winnipeg 204.956.9720 www.thefloorshow.ca Design Shop 204.999.5253 www.design--shop.com

DESIGN&DECOR A Step Up

In most places, stairs function as a means to get from floor to floor, but in a home, they are more of a focal point; an element of design that can give a space unique distinction. Jake’s Fancy Stairs Ltd., with their beautiful craftsmanship, skill and attention to detail, have created many stunning staircases and railings for very satisfied customers who wanted something just a little more. A family-run business started back in 1987, this company has enjoyed serving Winnipeg and surrounding areas for the past 29 years. Jake Kornelsen, along with brothers Gerhard and Henry, and father Jake Sr., have almost 120 years of experience between them. They work together with builders, designers, renovators, and homeowners to create beautiful stairs ranging from standard stairs to curved, spiral and anything in between. The company works with customers to not only create a design that works with the physical space, but with the materials and styles that will complement the home’s overall ambience. A staircase can set the whole tone of the house and is equal in importance to a good kitchen or master suite. Jake’s Fancy Stairs Ltd. not only builds amazing stairs, but great relationships. Most of their business comes from customer referrals. Whether building a new home, or renovating an older one, Jake’s Fancy Stairs would love the opportunity to work with you.

Consistent Quality

At a distance, some wooden bedroom furniture may appear to be the real thing, but up close the grain is not the same. The Zoe bedroom collection by Dine Art is made in Canada with solid birch wood for undeniable quality construction and visual appeal. With a wide range of finishes and stains, this transitional-styled set can also be customized with a selection of handles - from modern to contemporary - depending on your application. Pictured here in Smoke, the grey/brown stain allows the beauty of the wood’s grain and unique knots to be visible, making each piece a unique item. The same stain colour is featured inside the drawer linings of the chests, armoires, and bed frame to keep a consistent visual appeal. The headboard storage system and accompanying pieces feature the Quadra-glide drawers system for smooth opening and closing. Frames can also feature additional side storage, or be kept with regular side rails. And there’s no need for a boxspring - frames can accommodate full to kingsized mattresses. Along with an armoire and five-drawer dresser, the Zoe collection features occasional pieces that can be utilized in the bedroom, complement the Zoe dining set, or fit in other areas of the home. Not your Grandmother’s Chandelier

The world of lighting has changed immensely in the past 15 years. What we knew of light bulbs primarily dictated the designs. Now, with the use of small halogen and even better, LEDs, the world of lighting design has been opened up. Lighting has become a statement of style and creativity far beyond what we were used to and chandeliers are now the statement pieces of modern times. Featured here is the Romanelli from Eurofase Lighting. It is a stunning piece that is offered in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on your application. The satin-finished metal band is available in white or black with cascading coloured crystal strands. Although the faceted cut of this crystal can be found on many traditional style chandeliers, the sheer quantity and colouration gives it a unique and modern spin. The fixture becomes a statement piece that can fit into transitional or ultra contemporary interior to provide interest. These days, design rules have been pushed to the extreme, and the lighting industry has responded with focal point pieces perfect for any space. Widen your ideas and stretch your imagination and have some fun with your choices at Robinson Lighting. Their lighting specialists are here to assist you on this journey of creativity.

Looking Good, Working Better BY CARLY PETERS

Vinyl floors continue to be on point this spring in every area of the home from kitchens to basements to bathrooms, vinyl offers superior style coupled with a sturdy performance. With hundreds of vinyl varieties to choose from, Curtis Carpets can have your floors looking good and working better. The store’s latest offerings come from TORLYS Inc., a leading Canadian flooring company. The brand’s EverWood and EverTile are revolutionary new luxury vinyl floors that offer beauty and brawn for home installations. These floors are built tough to withstand the high-traffic demands of today’s busy households, as well as being 100 percent waterproof. “This is especially ideal for areas like the kitchen and bathroom,” states Tim Pariseau, operations manager at Curtis Carpets, adding TORLYS’ flooring will not expand or contract since they utilize Uniclic® joint technology for the ultimate in gap resistance, and feature an ultra-stable plastic core. On the surface, EverWood and EverTile have a thick, durable .5 millimetre wear layer, which are available in multiple low-gloss realistic wood and tile textures, as well as being hypoallergenic and carry the FloorScore® certification.

TORLYS even ensures that what’s under the flooring performs properly to keep the surface in superb condition. TORLYS CorkPlus™ attached underlay with Microban® antimicrobial protection inhibits the growth of bacteria, mould and mildew and nasty odours, as well as making the flooring quiet underfoot. Installations against a brick wall, fireplace hearth, or a curved surface like a staircase can be an issue with other floating floors because they may shift and move. Utilizing TORLYS Smart Tape to anchor the first rows of planks in place will stop any movement of the planks. Pariseau adds this is also ideal for flooring that will have a lot of sunlight on it. When sun hits vinyl for long periods the flooring can warp, but with TORLYS Smart Tape in those specific areas it will secure the flooring. Should a TORLYS smart floor become damaged the company’s patented tool, the Bulldog™, can easily fix major mishaps quickly by replacing the damaged plank, not the entire floor. The brand also features a 25-year residential warranty to ensure your floors are in their best shape for many years.

Absolutely You BY CARLY PETERS

Over 36 years ago, Seine River Cabinets started in Lorette before later relocating to Winnipeg. Right from the start, quality craftsmanship has been drilled into the core of the brand. Time and technology have brought many changes to the company, however, one thing remains true: Seine River Cabinets’ commitment to building a reputable brand. “We love the art of cabinetmaking, and we stop at nothing to ensure our clients are beyond satisfied. This is why we strive to bring the latest in cabinet designs, materials, and production processes to the marketplace,” states Wes Baker, president of the company, adding they combine old world craftsmanship with modern production processes to deliver unparalleled quality. “Our company uses the words ‘Absolutely You’ to communicate to our customers that they can truly get what they want out of their cabinetry.” Many brands have gone a long way to try to convince cabinet shoppers that custom and expensive are tied together, but anyone that comes into Seine River Cabinets while they’re looking for their dream cabinets will be pleasantly surprised.

We believe in design and getting what you want, and those shouldn’t be things our clients should have to sacrifice,” he states. The process to production starts with a discovery session that lets the individuality of clients show.

professionally as possible, and being responsive to clients’ schedule needs. “We put in that extra effort because our clients deserve nothing less,” concludes Baker.

“We believe that being a design-focused cabinetmaker means being a customer-focused cabinetmaker. This is where we leverage our designers and their expertise to bring our clients’ visions to life,” explains Baker, adding that custom cabinets aren’t just for kitchens, but can be designed for bathrooms, bars, storage areas like closets, and entertainment units as well. Utilizing a high-quality C&C machine at the company’s local plant, cabinets begin to take physical shape, but it’s during the finishing stages that clients’ visions become real. From painting and staining to elegant hardware, Seine River Cabinets’ quality control processes ensure that all aspects of the cabinets are just right. The final phase, of course, is installation. A big part of that is making sure the right people are installing the product as efficiently and SPRING 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 101

Transcend Time With Vintage-Inspired Fixtures

Taking design inspiration from the Edwardian period, the Artifacts® Collection from Kohler embodies a timeless style that brings elegance to the modern home. Classic elements blend with high performance, reflecting Kohler’s commitment to producing fixtures that meet at the intersection of style and quality craftsmanship. With vintage flair, the Artifacts® collection evokes a sense of nostalgia while catering to the needs of a fastpaced kitchen. A new take on a classic look, the Artifacts® PullDown Spout Kitchen Faucet is a versatile fixture with advanced features, allowing you to tackle a variety of everyday tasks with ease. The high-arc spout and turned lever handle is reminiscent of the past, demonstrating the faucet’s innovative design. This faucet features a 3-function sprayhead; its BerrySoft™ spray maintains the quality of your delicate produce by producing a gentle stream that washes fruits and vegetables. When it comes time to clean, its unique Sweep™ spray completes the job quickly and efficiently by turning the regular aerated stream into a powerful angled blade of water. Once washing up is done, the DockNetik™ technology secures the sprayhead to the spout using magnetic force.

The Artifacts® Wall-Mount Pot Filler brings needed convenience combined with striking, old-world design to the cooking enthusiasts that spend countless hours in the kitchen. Gone are the days of carrying heavy pots and spilling as you attempt to carry a full pot over to the stovetop. With 22” reach, 360-degree rotation and an impressive flow rate of 3.2 gallons per minute, this pot-filler is an understated treasure. When not in use, the fixture folds seamlessly out of the way but being mounted above the burners means it is accessible for when you need it. For the days when there are too many cooks in the kitchen, a pot filler can become your kitchen’s best accessory. With a pot filler mounted conveniently beside the stovetop as a secondary water source, there is no need to compete for valuable sink space when sharing the kitchen with others. A high spout and an articulating swing allow you to effortlessly fill up pots at various ranges or quickly refill when necessary liquid starts to evaporate.

KITCHEN&BATH Eye on Detail

Stone for the Modern Age

When you run your hand over the edges of a counter or ledge of an island in a showhome, you may not fully appreciate the skill needed to perfect those lines. Western Marble Granite & Tile Ltd. (WMGT) is the most technologically advanced granite, quartz and marble fabrication company in Western Canada, ensuring that whatever the project, it will be smooth. The miter waterfall gables on the island of this Artista Home’s kitchen in Oakbluff are a prime example. While miter edges provide a more modern fluid look, it’s technically more difficult since the top of the leg and the top of the island have to match up to appear almost seamless. It’s with laser-precision and attention to detail that WMGT continues to lead the trend in hard surface installation, product selection, and customer service. One of only three certified Marble Institute of America Accredited Natural Stone Fabricators in Canada, the company also recently became members of the Baeumler Approved list of reputable professionals. Members not only have liability insurance and regulatory certification, but are also independent and have confirmed references along with a great product and a proven track record. WMGT’s relationships with their suppliers also means having handpicked, in-stock slabs at exclusive pricing, which customers can view in person. The showroom offers a variety of hard surfaces to suit anyone’s design needs.
