the agenda Welcome to the summer edition of Style Manitoba. At writing time, it’s a couple weeks away from the official opening of Investors Group Field – an event Winnipeggers and Bomber fans have been anxiously anticipating for more than a year. We are thrilled that Style’s summer distribution date coincides with the opening, and extremely proud to present Kelly Gray’s cover story - Game On. The story focuses on team strengths and changes, enhancements to the fan and player experience, how the game day experience will be improved and what fans should expect from the new field.

Although Bombers’ management faced plenty of criticism for not opening on the date originally planned, anyone in Manitoba’s construction industry knows that this was a monumental project, finished in a remarkably small time frame, particularly when considering not just its scope, but also our harsh winter climate and other weather conditions that ultimately affected different steps of construction. Construction at this level is much like a highly choreographed ballet – the timing of each step is critical to its judicious completion. One misstep – whether related to late supply deliveries, weather shutdowns or other reasons– and the schedule is thrown off.

I really enjoyed Going With The Flow, the story on your feature home in the Spring 2013 edition of Style. Although I wasn’t particularly looking for a new home, I couldn’t help but notice and admire what a great job Paradigm Homes did on the lower level of this home. It was every bit as attractive as the upper level. Kudos to this builder for showcasing such a wonderful home design – both upstairs and down.

Seeing the light Open concept contemporary design makes modern living a breeze Masterful design, inside and out, is key to ensuring a contemporary home harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding natural landscape. Such is the case with this custom-built home by Trademark Homes.

Located on tree-lined Victoria Crescent, just a few blocks from St. Vital Park, the home’s distinctive flat roof and linear architecture is striking, without detracting from its park-like setting.

The low-maintenance exterior features brickwork that appears grey from a distance; on closer inspection it is actually blue with copper highlights. The brickwork contrasts with the smooth acrylic stucco applied to the rest of the home. An aluminum panel above the main entrance adds a sleek accent and visual interest.

Behind the stylish façade are premium construction techniques that go beyond what is expected in the custom homebuilding industry. “For us, this is the rule, rather than the exception,” says Trademark Homes’ owner Mani Dhaliwal.

“Steel beam construction, plywood exterior and web floor joists, for example, are standard for all of our homes,” says Dhaliwal. “It’s important to start with a solid structure; you can always change the interior.”

On entering the home, one is greeted by an airy, light-filled space. The foyer is lit from above with a series of square halogen beauty lights, in keeping with the home’s clean lines. Directly ahead, a glass stairwell allows an unimpeded view of the great room and kitchen and dining areas beyond.

These rooms are separated by a two-sided fireplace inset into a natural stone wall. This provides a three-dimensional, textured appearance that softens the spaces on either side.

Designed by M-Concept, the main kitchen/ eating area gleams, thanks to the white quartz countertop and high gloss cabinetry. Stainless steel kick plates at the base of the counters are another way to maintain the streamlined look here. Everything is cleverly concealed, including the fridge located behind customized cabinetry, and the recessed hood fan above the stove.

With 6,000 square feet of total living space, scale was key to this home’s successful interior.

Arnold Tiessen of Interior Illusions achieved that balance by choosing a large leather sectional and accent chairs for the great room.

Keeping clutter at bay while entertaining is a small, yet functional butler’s kitchen off to the side, where meals can be made and dishes washed – completely out of sight.

Surrounded by large windows, the four-season sunroom is a great place in which to relax and unwind or enjoy during casual gatherings. A small built-in bar is conveniently situated across the hall.

Also on the main floor is a home gym, a room usually relegated to the basement. “We kept it on the main level so it’s not closed off from family activities,” says Dhaliwal.

There are five bedrooms upstairs, two of them with ensuite bathrooms. Trademark Homes pulled out all the stops in the huge master, where a wave tile feature wall unit houses a gas fireplace and flat screen TV, and a glamorous central light fixture illuminates the space. A

M-Concept designed this sleek and sophisticated kitchen featuring white quartz countertops, further enhanced by whitewashed engineered ash wood flooring from Ken’s Carpets.

A marvel of function and style, the kitchen’s clean lines are maintained thanks to the cleverly concealed elements, like the fridge behind customized cabinetry, and a recessed hood fan above the stove.

Frosted glass sliding barn doors open onto the spectacular ensuite featuring heated porcelain tile floors. A freestanding lava rock tub main-

tains heat from the water, which cascades in via a large, distinctive Aquabrass faucet, all from Robinson Bath Centre. Smaller versions of the fixture are used at the double sinks.

Openness is further maintained by the glassed shower enclosure by Fort Rouge Glass, replete

with steam shower and multi-colour lighting.

With a total of 6,000 square feet of living space to decorate, Trademark Homes relied on the expertise of Arnold Tiessen of Interior Illusions.

Tiessen selected all interior and exterior finishes, including window coverings, flooring, light fixtures, stonework, paint colours, artwork, accessories and furniture.

“I knew that in a contemporary house like this, less is more,” Tiessen says. “It lends itself towards modern styling,” he adds.

Tiessen chose the home’s overall colour palette of mainly grey tones with yellow as an accent colour. The engineered ash flooring throughout the main floor sourced from Ken’s Carpets, for example, “brings an airy feel to an open space,” Tiessen says.

With its high ceilings and large connected spaces, scale is key in a home this size.

“Furniture in particular needs to be to scale, so it doesn’t look lost,” says Tiessen, who chose a huge 12’ x 10’ charcoal grey leather sectional for the great room, punctuated by two retro-modernist chairs in a complementary ochre shade.

As in the rest of the home, large triple-pane JELD-WEN windows maximize the natural light and surrounding outdoor views.

Here, as in everywhere throughout the house, “there is an abundance of windows to take full advantage of all the views,” says Greg Grewal, Summer 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 9

listing agent for Trademark Homes. “There are a total of 72 windows in this home,” Grewal adds.

Tiessen chose the right window treatments to balance privacy and style while letting the light shine in through the JELD-WEN windows. For the large windows on the main floor, he selected screen weave roller shades and a soft, ripple fold style sheer drape for the living and dining room.

For areas requiring more privacy, like the master bedroom and ensuite, Tiessen used Silhouette shades by Hunter Douglas to provide precise lighting control.

This includes the seven 3’ x 3’ windows located in the elevated basement, which have the same light qualities as the rest of the dwelling. The only exception here is the home theatre room, which houses an impressive 80-inch glass screen with projector.

This is, after all, a high-tech home. “It’s completely automated,” Grewal says. “Everything can be controlled both while in the home and from thousands of miles away.” A dual-stage, high efficiency furnace with electronic filters also has automatic dampers that divert heat to colder zones to help keep temperatures comfortable year round.

The master bedroom features a wave tile accent wall with gas fireplace, walk-in closet and beautiful window treatments designed for privacy and light diffusion.

Trademark Homes relied on many of the same trusted trades and suppliers like Interior Illusions for another client: Carmen Cacea.

Cacea enlisted Trademark Homes to build her two-storey, pitched roof home in Van Hull Estates. She chose Trademark after viewing examples of their homes in other housing developments.

“What some builders considered upgrades were standard with Trademark,” Cacea says.

From the hand scraped oak hardwoods to the gunmetal blue cabinetry, this home’s colour scheme takes its cue from the streaked marble tiled fireplace wall divider between the living room and kitchen.

The ensuite’s glassed-in shower enclosure installed by Fort Rouge Glass maintains the open, light-imbued quality found throughout the home.

A freestanding tub from Robinson Bath Centre takes center stage atop heated porcelain tile floors in the ensuite.

Interior Illusions’ Tiessen helped the homeowners choose finishes and furnishings for this home as well, including the Cambria quartz countertop with seamless waterfall corners on the kitchen island.

In the master bedroom upstairs, light silver textured wallpaper and pendant lights on either side of the bed add touches of elegance. The ensuite exudes luxury, with Turkish heated marble tile on the floors and walls, and a heated, self-cleaning jetted tub. Large windows above the tub allow light in during the day, while a built-in fireplace casts a relaxing glow at night.

Built on a corner lot, the home required curb appeal from more than one angle. This was achieved with a cultured stone façade supplied

by Alsip’s, stamped concrete driveway and stainless steel panels at the front and side of the house.

Trevor points out that their customers can deal locally, but shop the world in a stress free approach that has people driving off the lot for less money than they expected. He reports that they have a tailored nine point program designed to take the ‘what ifs’ out of the car buying process.

Step one consists of an interview where the Nott team discusses customer requirements, such as make and model, year, mileage and options.

Step two has Nott’s professional buyers evaluate North American markets to establish pricing on the vehicle.

Step three sees Nott’s team place the order.

Here, customers are provided with the assurance

of a 30-day order contract that includes the terms and the service fee.

Step four has the buyers at Nott perform a power search that includes manufacturer and dealer auctions. Once found, the vehicle is spec’d to determine that it meets all contract criteria such as options and engine size.

Once verified, a bid is placed. Next, a third party inspection is ordered to confirm that the vehicle’s engine, transmission and body integrity are sound. If anything is discovered that negatively impacts the car, the bid is killed, and Nott’s team begins a search for another automobile.

Step five occurs when the right vehicle is sourced. Here, the financing papers are signed and the car is shipped to Nott’s service centre.

This can take as little as three days.

Step six has the Nott staff take care of all the import paperwork (if the car is sourced in the US) and make certain the car meets all Transport Canada criteria. In some cases, the service team may make modifications to comply with Canadian regulations.

Step seven involves the work through on the very detailed Nott Family Certified160 point inspection. This inspection is twice as thorough as a Manitoba Safety Certification.

Step eight is a complete detailing and vehicle conditioning.

Step nine involves the final delivery of the vehicle and an orientation session from a knowledgeable member of the Nott team.

“A big part of the success of this program is the comfort Nott customers have from knowing they are protected in this complex process,” says Trevor. “We take out the exposure to risk and leave customers with greater equity in their luxury car purchase. This means people get the cars they want in a hassle-free buying experience, and then a couple of years down the road, they find they have actual value in their cars rather than a lot of depreciation.”

At Nott, once the sale is done, the team already has plans in place to sell the car down the road into the local retail market. In this way, Nott’s clients achieve the highest residual value, a figure they can use to upgrade their ride during the next purchase. Trevor explains that at Nott, they consider the Long-term Total Cost of Driving (LTCD). Then they work with the client to establish the length of time they want to hold the vehicle. He suggests that this timeframe is typically 12 to 24 months. At that time, they advertise the vehicle and sell it at a retail price to the public.

“While we are listing your vehicle for sale, we are also actively sourcing a replacement ‘SMART’ vehicle at a wholesale cost. Our clients get retail for their trade through a consignment sale, and because the car was bought SMART initially, our clients are not getting stuck with paying for the depreciation. The result is a dramatically reduced price to drive a new and exciting car.”

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are rewriting the book and kickin’ it hard with a new season, a new stadium and a fresh attitude.

Together this promises to build on the club’s incredible traditions that span more than 80 years as Winnipeg’s team.

Last season ended well with our guys slapping the Montreal Alouettes with a 19-11 loss at the old Canad Inns Stadium. That was in front of nearly 27,000 fans that came to see the Blue & Gold battle it out in the old barn one last time.

Now the June 27, 2013 Season opener will play to what is expected to be a capacity crowd of 33,500 screaming fans that will come to see not just great football action, but great architecture as well.

The Blue Bombers’ new home is Investors Group Field, the first new CFL facility built in the last 30 years. According to team president and CEO Garth Buchko, the buzz over the site is well deserved.

“Inside and around the stadium fans will be fully engaged. For example, the Field will offer two of the largest HD video boards in Canada.

These boards are three city busses long and two busses high with eye-popping resolution. We also have 1000 speakers to go along with the visuals, and in the bowl itself we have placed an additional 500 JBL performance quality speakers to make field presentations something to remember,” says Buchko. He notes that they listened to Manitobans who were vocal regarding a list of ‘must haves’ for the new centre.

“We have 50 percent more concessions that will take the food experience to another level. There are healthy choices like fresh fruit and veggies, as well as more traditional favourites like a signature hotdog made exclusively for us by Manitoba’s own Winkler Meats. We have pizza from Manitoba’s Pizza Hotline where items are made to order on site rather than brought in and kept warm on game day. Salisbury House will be present with Nips and other items, and we even have ex-Bomber Obby Kahn’s new

shwarma restaurant, Shwarma Khan, as a new player on the foodservice team.”

There is more, says Buchko, much more. He describes the design as a bowl layout where seats surround the playing surface that is 25 feet below grade level. “When fans enter the facility, most of the seating will be below them in a cascade downward toward the field,” he says, pointing out that 22,000 of the 33,422 seats will be located below ground, with an

open concourse above that travels around the full breadth of the stadium, providing an unencumbered view to the field from the concessions on this level. There are also 52 luxury boxes surrounding the field. More, Investors Group Field can expand its capacity to deliver temporary seating at each end zone, bringing capacity to 40,000 seats for larger events such as the Grey Cup.

There are also fewer rows with which to contend. For those that were daunted by the steep climb to seats at the old Canad Inns Stadium, Bomber fans can now leave their ropes, hiking gear and crampons at home, thanks to a design that has 25 fewer rows.

With seating placed more evenly around the field there are now just 52 rows of comfortable chairs that offer 50 percent more legroom and cup holders.

The overall setting that has been described as intimate thanks to the closeness to the actual playing surface, is achieved through plans that have fewer seats along the field and more seats in the end zones. The sense of intimacy is further enhanced by the cantilevered roof that covers 80 percent of the seating area. The roof will also act as a baffle to take Winnipeg’s reputation as the CFL’s loudest crowd to a new level by capturing and redirecting sound throughout the stadium.

Buchko also points to the front of the stadium as another key feature of game day change.

Here the Plaza offers space enough for 2000 to 3000 people to gather in advance of games.

“In the past, people would congregate in the parking lots where they would ‘tailgate’ with friends prior to kick-off. Now, fans can gather in the Plaza where they will find concessions, entertainment and Blue Bomber branded sports gear,” he says, adding that the area in front of the stadium will contribute to a festival atmosphere where guests can really get their game on.

In previous years there was much talk about the intrusive nature of Canad Inns Stadium security procedures. “We listened,” says the Bomber president. He reports that people can still expect a bit of scrutiny when they arrive at the gate, but the invasive pat downs will be a thing of the past.

“Our security teams will now be able to use wands much like airport security and we are allowing guests to bring in small snacks. We see this as simple hospitality and want the greeting at the front entrance to be as pleasant and good natured as possible. We noted fan concerns about past practices and have made positive changes people will notice. We have combined the latest technology alongside enhanced personnel training to make this not just a safe environment, but a welcoming one as well.”

Once inside, fans will notice that the field action is visible from all points in the bowl.

“Sightlines are incredible,” he continues, reporting that the design allows 100 percent unimpeded view to the inside of the bowl that is 25 feet below surface grade.

For those who have stepped away from the action to grab a hotdog or a soft chewy pretzel from one of the vendors, 250 video monitors guarantee access to the action. In the old Canad Inns Stadium, most people cannot count the times they went to get a beer and stood

in line missing interception and touchdown plays. The new stadium even has TV in the washrooms. Indeed, the washrooms themselves are better designed and offer 50 percent more facility than the old site at Polo Park. This means less time spent away from seats and play action, thanks to separate entry and exit doors.

The stadium has been a long time in the works. According to Buchko, the new site was first considered some 10 years ago when the Winnipeg Football Club looked at the feasibility of the idea. Over the years, there has been a bit of business back and forth with players such as David Asper and Creswin Developments offering their plans alongside others. In the end, the ball came back to the Blue Bombers, who have worked to make this project multi-use and broadly valuable for Manitobans, some of who may not be football fans. Now, in addition to the Bombers, the U of M Bisons as well as teams like the Winnipeg Rifles, have a dramatic new place to play and Manitobans have a

fresh class ‘A’ site for concerts such as the up and coming Paul McCartney event slated for August 12th.

“The spinoffs from the project have been huge and will continue. For instance, just the employment factor alone equals more than one million person hours worked over the period of construction,” says Buchko, commenting further that the ball club will pay back a bit less than half the cost of the $200 million facility, with the Province and City picking up the remainder. Added benefits also include new building and businesses in the immediate area, enhancements to the U of M infrastructure surrounding the site, property value upticks and increases to business and payroll taxes.

It’s no surprise that Buchko is optimistic, especially when he considers the health of Winnipeg’s Football Club. While it’s true that the stadium is opening behind schedule, a fact that cost the team some $768,000, a figure they had to pull from last year’s profits, the club is holding onto more than $10 million in cash. This is up markedly from last year when reserves stood around $6.2 million. Season ticket sales are also strong with more than 24,000 season passes sold. Hopes are that walk-up sales will also be strong.

Last year the team got hammered with incredibly bad weather, a factor that kept people off rain swept seating. With the new roof providing cover, hopes are people will forget weather and head to the box office on game day, and forget about monsoons and scorching heat.

And, on game day, the facility may well show itself as a contributor to the efficacy of team operations. Consider the benefits to the players. Reports show off a hot tub expansive enough for Jacque Cousteau, and the change room features 68 permanent lockers and at least a dozen more for temporary needs. equipment and training room is far larger than in the past. In fact, size has doubled for equipment, and the weight room is now four times the scope of its Canad Inns Stadium size. There is even an 80-seat theatre for players to review games and coaching staff to address media. Other attributes include private offices for the coaches, and the players have their own lounge. Together, the facility upgrades have many Bombers thinking they are playing in an NFL-style club.

Facility aside, Buchko shines his famous optimism toward the team itself.

Finishing with a win last year was a bright spot, even if the Blue Bombers didn’t make the playoffs. “This year’s roster will offer more depth in the offensive line,” he says. “We have our receiving core back and people can expect great things from Chris Garrett. Offensive Coordinator/ Quarterbacks Coach Gary Crowton will continue to build on his philosophy and the players are very enthusiastic. Buck Pierce is healthy and we will place a strong emphasis on protecting him. We are also building depth by bringing in and developing players such as Justin Goltz, who represent the future of our offensive drive.”

On the defensive side he is no less pumped. Buchko remarks that Defensive Coordinator/ Linebackers’ Coach Casey Creehan has been busy filling in some holes created by a few departures. Already, the team has been blessed by the performance of Henoc Muamba, a product of St. Francis Xavier who led in specialty team tackles, sacked three QB’s last year and placed second in defensive team tackles. Now General Manger Joe Mack has signed his brother Cauchy, who played for BC last year. The older Muamba brother will come on board as a safety, and hopes are he will follow up on his solid play last year that had him earn kudos such as CFL Canadian Player of the Week for his hits against Saskatchewan.

New as well will be Special Teams Coordinator Craig Dickenson, who has come to the Blue Bomber organization from Regina (2011) and Oakland (2010). According to Buchko, Dickenson will change the landscape of play on the field and is well known as a keen strategist with many tricks up his sleeve.

A ride through history

Did you know Winnipeg was once called the “wickedest city in Canada?” That an actual team of horses galloping

on a treadmill were featured in a 1909 production of “Ben Hur” at the old Walker Theatre? That the cornerstone for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights came from Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed?

These are just a few captivating nuggets of Winnipeg’s history – past and present – shared on the new public tour offered by the Winnipeg Trolley Company.

Established in 2011, the unique tourism and charter company is dedicated to providing exciting and affordable tour and transportation services via a heritage style vehicle.

The comprehensive “Heart of a Nation” featured tour is a dynamic 90-minute jaunt through Winnipeg historical neighbourhoods.

The tour starts, fittingly, at The Forks: Winnipeg’s birthplace at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. From here, the tour winds through St. Boniface, the Exchange District, downtown and along Wellington Crescent before looping around Assiniboine Park and returning through Osborne Village, around the Manitoba Legislative Building, down Broadway Avenue and back to The Forks.

En route, passengers enjoy a captivating and humorous narrative, expertly delivered by co-owner Benjamin Gillies. The tour is a travelling treasure trove of little known facts, pop culture references, architectural descriptions, and social history mixed with stories about the interesting people that have shaped Winnipeg’s storied past.

“We designed the tour so that everyone can find something they like,” Gillies notes. A history buff and Winnipeg proponent, Gillies has managed to find unique stories that local residents will enjoy as much as their visitors will. The fascinating tour will certainly have everyone seeing Canada’s windiest city in a whole new light.

What better way to showcase the city’s history than from a vehicle inspired by the Winnipeg Electric Company streetcars that once graced Winnipeg streets?

“We designed the vehicle to emulate the look and feel of a 1920s streetcar,” Gillies says. “Except this one runs on wheels, not rails.”

The 32-passenger orange and cream trolley turns heads as it winds through Winnipeg. Inside, brass handrails, oak paneling, domed lighting and small stained glass window treatments help recreate the era. Equipped with heating, air conditioning, a full audio system and panoramic window, the vehicle blends modern comforts with heritage charm.

“Trolley 356” is also proving to be a popular venue for transporting large groups in style. It can be chartered for private sightseeing, weddings and other special events, as well as for corporate shuttles, sports and event transportation, and convention and tradeshow hospitality.

Despite its own short history, Winnipeg Trolley Company has already earned recognition for its fresh approach to showcasing the River City. This May, the company received a 2013 Tourism Winnipeg Innovation of the Year Award of Distinction.

When you learn how a local hockey team became the world’s first Olympic hockey champions, about Winnipeg’s connection to the world’s most famous spy, and why a celebratory banquet was held in a Winnipeg sewer - you’ll never look at Winnipeg the same way again.

“Our mission is to make our public tour the best first thing visitors do in Winnipeg,” Gillies says. “We also hope that Winnipeggers take the tour, have a good time and a better sense of pride for their city. We want to make people feel like they are part of history.”

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division

Power. Grace. Intelligence: the mark of every ballet dancer. Ballet schools are everywhere for students seeking recreation, fitness, and expression. But what if you want to push your dance further?

There is a world-class training institute in your backyard: The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Professional Division. Established in 1971, the RWB Professional Division School has been training dancers for 42 years. And its graduates proliferate as performers, teachers, choreographers, directors, designers, and administrators. In fact, they make up three quarters of the company and over half of the teaching roster.

A famous graduate? Evelyn Hart. She danced as principal with the company from 1976 to 2005 and received international awards for her stunning abilities.

“Our mission is to train dancers and dance teachers for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and for the world,” explains Johanne Gingras, Teacher Training Program Director.

How does RWB work?

Who better to ask than recently retired principal dancer, Vanessa Lawson? Vanessa, 35, trained in the school as well as danced in the company for 16 years, eight of which she enjoyed as principal.

“I’ve gone through each stage of this building,” Vanessa marvels.

“You can rely on the teachers,” remarks level 6 dancer Connor Coughlin, 16. “They guide you and want to see you be successful.”

Two key Professional Division programs let dancers go the whole nine yards. Concert Hour sees students take the show on the road. They rehearse, perform, and lug gear.

“It’s fun,” Connor remarks. “You get a sense of the touring life.”

The big highlight? First Steps. This program gives the opportunity to choreograph original work on your peers.

“You get to be coached through a choreographic process and be involved in all production levels: lighting, marketing, costumes, and workshops,” Connor explains. “It’s a wonderful opportunity.”

And since all Professional Division shows like First Steps, as well as In Concert and On the Edge are presented to the public, students can get valuable “on the boards” experience.

But dancing full time doesn’t mean academic skills go to the wayside. Study is integrated into the daily schedule. Middle years students go to Nordale School (Louis Riel School Division), while those in high school attend the Collegiate at the University of Winnipeg. The whole package is a testament to RWB’s supportive environment.

“They foster a sense of family,” Vanessa affirms.

The RWB School Professional Division offers a full-time 7-level program. Students are trained in the Russian system of classical ballet – developing into strong versatile performers that can compete on international levels. And thanks to the school’s unique affiliation with the company (they share the building), students rub elbows with professionals.

And remember, professional arts programs guarantee work. Just look at RWB’s Teacher Training Program: 100% of grads find employment.

“I would see Evelyn Hart walking the halls,” Vanessa recalls, “And in physiotherapy! We would talk ... it gave me a sense of what ballet life is like.”

“You have to love it,” Vanessa reminds. “It’s a huge choice to make. Ballet’s not easy. But the rewards are amazing. Dancers are always successful in any direction their lives take them.”

Restaurant Renaissance: Subtle, Sophisticated, Artful

Say “Mona Lisa” anywhere in the world, and most people think of da Vinci’s masterpiece: that face, those hands, that smile: unchangeable and unforgettable.

But say “Mona Lisa” in Winnipeg, and the reaction is quite different. You feel hungry. You smell basil, tomato, and fresh dough ... maybe the nose of a fine Chianti. You see rustic warm tones, wood texture, and artful canvases on the wall.

In short, you feel at home.

So, thanks to a construction and design dream team, Mona Lisa Ristorante Italiano underwent a radical makeover.

Here’s a peep at the design palette: metal, stone, glass, tile, vinyl, exposed brick, brightly tinted hues, fluid textures, energetic open space, and cutting-edge technology.

Add to that palette some major changes: additional and fully accessible restrooms, refurbished plumbing and electrical, redesigned dining room, and revised exterior.

That’s after about 30 years of family-style southern Italian cooking from the restaurant’s well-known spot, just a bocce ball toss from the train tracks crossing Corydon Avenue in River Heights.

“Quite a massive project,” Joe affirms.

Hold on ... well known is an understatement.

Try wildly popular.

And Joe looked no further than his bocce ball league for the dramatic change. The perfect collaborator? A rival - a bocce league rival, that is, from team “Kubees” - Nejmark Architect, Pedro Chagas.

“The tables were so well-used we had to cover them with linen,” laughs founding owner Giuseppe “Joe” Grande.

The mark of success in the restaurant biz!

But even a winning combination of taste and atmosphere can’t stop change.

“When Mona Lisa first opened, it was just myself,” Joe relates. “But family develops a person. They influence me ... you’re not done after just a couple years. You need to invest time and effort for success.”

You wouldn’t even recognize Mona Lisa now; She’s a modern lady who knows her way around pizza-pies, paintings, and digital projectors!

Known for quality architecture, interior design, and project management that’s on schedule, on budget, and sustainable, Nejmark worked with Joe to maintain Mona Lisa’s artful allure while ushering her into the 21st century.

“I hired Pedro because he’s passionate,” Joe affirms. “He was excited about the project and fun to be with!”

“We preplanned everything,” reports Pedro, stressing how the project needed to be time sensitive and interfere minimally with Mona Lisa’s daily operations. Over the course of nine weeks from February to April, the renaissance unfolded.

Enter the orchestrator. When it came to anything and everything construction (interior/ exterior), FABCA Projects Ltd. as the General Contractor lead the charge. Under the helm of Greg Fiorentino (also from the Kubees bocce team), FABCA selected and coordinated all subtrades, ensured completion, and gave the okay to finished work - guaranteeing everything was complete, correct, to architectural requirement, and, of course, to Joe’s satisfaction.

Moreover, beginning as early as October 2012, FABCA pre-ordered all required construction materials before any work even began. This assured that when Mona Lisa had to close in February, there were no delays.

“FABCA made sure it was all on time,” Greg confirms, adding that a superintendent was always on site.

Let’s get under the hood. Tower Engineering Group, a client-focused company specializing in structural, precast, mechanical, and electrical needs, provided structural assessments, reconfigured ventilation mechanics for aesthetics and function, as well as contributed new designs for plumbing and dining room electrics.

“Joe had a definite concept,” recalls interior designer Judy Boldt of Adelaide Design Group.

“He liked Italian design detail and symbolism.”

“I saw lots of arches,” Joe affirms, admitting with a smile, “I’m an archy guy.”

“Arches became a feature repeated throughout the space with a modern approach: expressive, fluid, and geometric,” Judy explains.

Indeed, extending from Joe’s updated Mona Lisa logo, wall treatments are alive with wave patterns, windows flaunt arch forms, and the patio’s fencing and storage are also similarly accented.

Romyn Plumbing & Heating Ltd. installed the new plumbing and select state-of-the-art fixtures. They also contributed a highly efficient Heat Recovery Ventilator System (HRV).

All electrical needs were responsibly met by 3 Phase Electrical, which was crucial to the schedule. 3 Phase Electrical also supplied and installed new light fixtures.

And Ideal POS Ltd., Winnipeg’s leading provider of Restaurant POS point-of-sale systems, installed a new hardware and software system.

Next: cosmetics. Walls and floors were given treatments by Colour Design & Decorating, who took care of the painting and vinyl coverings,

as well as Tuscany Construction: The Tile Specialist, who installed beautiful new ceramic tiling.

The exterior got some love, too. The facade is now of a dark smoky brick construction, lit up with high-tech backlighting, accented with modernized metallic signage, and accessorized with more formal patio elements.

The “Iron Eagle Fence” defining the sidewalk patio is a striking feature. It was provided and installed by special order through Wallace + Wallace Fences, a long-trusted local manufacturer and distributor of fencing products.

What inspired all this change?

Look up.

Mona Lisa’s ceiling is to be equipped with white arch-shaped acrylic screens. These beautiful forms capture light not only from the restaurant’s expansive front windows, but also glow thanks to digital projection.

“Cutting edge projection technology gives the restaurant a dynamic presence,” Pedro explains.

“We can have any atmosphere or environment now,” Joe marvels, “The Sistine Chapel, falling meteorites, the Academy Awards ... or,” he chuckles, “arches!”

The restaurant is also equipped with three flatscreen HD televisions, a new sound system, and cordless microphones. Audio and video can be streamed throughout the entire facility or into specific spaces. This is all thanks to SI Alarms Ltd., who also provided a new alarm system.

Sounds like a lot! But, in actuality, it adds up to a subtle statement that’s quite sophisticated -- foregrounding Mona Lisa’s artful spirit.

Joe’s restaurant / gallery dream has come true: “Mona Lisa’s walls were always intended to display artwork.”

Golden Canapés ½ cup (125 mL) light mayonnaise 3 tbsp (45 mL) chives, chopped 1 tsp (5 mL) Dijon mustard ¼ - ½ tsp (1-2 mL) red chili flakes 6 hard-cooked eggs, chopped ½ cup (2 oz. /125 mL) shredded Cheddar cheese ¼ cup (50 mL) toasted, roughly chopped pecans 24 slices multi-grain baguette

Preheat broiler oven.

In a medium bowl, stir together mayonnaise, chives, mustard and chili flakes until well blended. Stir in eggs, cheese and pecans until well combined. Dollop each bread slice with 1 rounded tablespoon (15 mL) of the egg mixture. Broil about 6 inches (15 cm) from heat until lightly browned and bubbly, about 1 to 2 minutes.

Makes 24 appetizers.

Mocha Chiffon Cake Cake 2 tsp (10 mL) instant coffee powder or granules ¾ cup (175 mL) hot water 1 ¾ cup (425 mL) all-purpose flour 1 ½ cups (375 mL) sugar 1 tbsp (15 mL) baking powder ½ tsp (2 mL) salt ½ cup (125 mL) Canola oil 6 egg yolks 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract 6 egg whites ½ tsp (2 mL) cream of tartar 2 -1 oz (28 g) squares semi-sweet chocolate, grated

Cocoa Whipped Cream 2 cups (500 mL) whipping cream 1/3 cup (75 mL) sugar 3 tbsp (45 mL) cocoa 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract Semi-sweet chocolate curls or cocoa nibs, for garnish

Cake Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Dissolve coffee powder or granules in hot water; cool to room temperature. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt; stir until well mixed. Make a well in center; add oil, egg yolks, vanilla and cooled coffee. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.

In another large bowl, use electric mixer to beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff but not dry.

Gently pour batter over egg whites; fold in carefully, adding grated chocolate towards the end. Spoon batter into an ungreased 10-inch (25 cm) tube pan.

Bake 60 to 70 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Turn pan upside down and let cake hang until cool. Loosen sides of cake with knife or long metal spatula.

Remove from pan.

Cocoa Whipped Cream In a medium bowl, combine whipping cream, sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla. Stir to blend ingredients, but do not beat. Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours. Whip until soft peaks form.

Just before serving, frost cake with cocoa whipped cream. Decorate with semi-sweet chocolate curls or cocoa nibs, if desired.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Makes 10 – 12 servings.

Whipped Honey Goat Cheese on Grilled Crostini

Grilled Crostini: Multi-grain baguette, cut on the bias into 1/4� slices Olive oil 2 garlic cloves, cut in half Fresh cracked pepper

Whipped Honey Goat Cheese: Combine goat cheese and cream in the bowl of an electric mixer outfitted with the whisk attachment; process until well blended. Add honey and process until combined.

Whipped Honey Goat Cheese: 4 oz (120 g) soft mild goat cheese at room temperature 2 tbsp (30 mL) whipping cream 3 tbsp (45 mL) BeeMaid Honey Fresh Chives

To Assemble: Place mixture into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Squeeze goat cheese mixture onto baguette slices. Add a grinding of fresh black pepper. Top each with chive: Cover and chill until ready to serve.

Directions: Preheat a barbecue over medium heat.

Brush one side of each baguette slice with olive oil. Rub side with olive oil with garlic. Place baguette slices, olive oil side down, on barbecue and grill until lightly charred. Remove from heat and let cool.

Honey, Apple Cider & Sage Honey Lime Ginger Pale Ale Brined Pork Chops Remove pork chops from brine and pat 4, 1” (2.5 cm) thick, bone-in pork Shandy Honey Lime Ginger Lemonade: 1 cup (250 mL) BeeMaid Honey 3/4 cup (175 mL) fresh-squeezed lemon juice 6 cups (1.5 L) filtered water 1/3 cup (75 mL) lime juice 1” (2.5 cm) piece of fresh peeled gingerroot Lime wheels, for garnish Pale Ale: 1 bottle, Half Pints St. James Pale Ale Directions: In a blender, combine honey, lemon and lime juice; process for about 30 seconds.

Using a fine food rasp, grate ginger and add to blender with half the water; process for about 30 seconds. Pour contents from blender into a large mason jar with remaining water, stirring to mix, and place in fridge to chill.

To Assemble: Pour half of beer into a tall chilled glass.

Fill to top with chilled Honey Lime Ginger Lemonade. Garnish with a lime wheel and serve.

dry; discard brine. Combine garlic and sage leaves and rub each side of pork chops with mixture; season with black pepper.

Directions: Combine water, honey and salt in a pot set over medium-low heat; cook, stirring often, until honey and salt dissolve.

Rotate the chops a half turn at the 5-minute mark to get crisscross grill marks. The chops are done when just a hint of pink remains at the center. Serve immediately.

Preheat a barbecue set over medium heat.

Grill pork chops, about 10 minutes a side.

Remove from heat and add cider, stirring to mix. When cooled, add pork chops to brine; cover and refrigerate for 4 hours. “ Say it with us…. One tablespoon of sugar equals two teaspoons of honey. John Cale turned 71 in March, and a solo career that’s produced many electrifying and entrancing albums since 1970 has grown even more potent. With Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood, he’s still a keen reporter and storyteller, whether tracking urban violence and draconian law in “Scotland Yard” (“Who’s been breaking windows/Generally misunderstood”), sketching a shadowy meeting in “Mary” or getting to the heart in “Living with You.” That handsome voice remains on the strength, but he makes astute use of tuning software when the mood is claustrophobic, and his instrumental versatility (keyboards, viola, guitar) is ever dependable. That pension will have to wait a while.

Terje Rypdal Odyssey – In Studio & In Concert (ECM) The lean, keening sound of Terje Rypdal’s guitar – none more electric in his instrumental field – is an unmistakable signature. It wrote tightly in 1975 for his new band, Odyssey; their double album was so cloudy and turbulent that excising one 25-minute track, “Rolling Stone,” to fit one CD did not kill the music, much less the mood. The new three-disc review restores the missing music in all its restless invention, with his guitar weeping or soaring over busy bass and drums while organ and trombone add jabs of colour and thicken the texture. Comparisons are approximate, but Fare Well and Ballade have the grandeur and mystery of 1970-vintage Pink Floyd. Surprises abound on the third disc, recorded for radio and previously unreleased, where the band joins forces with Swedish Radio Jazz Group for an expanded palette of deep brass and high woodwinds – light relief by comparison, but no less substantial for that.

John Surman Saltash Bells (ECM) After liberating the baritone saxophone, finding the litheness in that potentially unwieldy instrument, Englishman John Surman developed an equally distinctive approach as a one-man studio orchestra, using warm, glistening synthesizer patterns as trellises on which to wind his baritone and soprano saxes and bass clarinet. After nearly 20 years in other settings, Surman is back to solo music; Saltash Bells is his warmest yet, emphasizing the deep horns while thickening the electronic textures. According to his record label, the music was inspired by his early life in Devon (and was rescued from a planned documentary on the West Country). The connection feels immediate in the beautiful title track, with echoing clarinets and distant church bells.

It’s easy to see that Jennifer Lajambe is clearly devoted to dogs. It’s a devotion that keeps the energetic and cheerful owner of Stay N Play Dog Services dedicated to her fourlegged charges and their owners, too.

Her commitment is also very personal.

“Dogs saved my life,” she says. Diagnosed with a life-changing brain disorder several years ago, Lajambe found dog walking helped put her back on the path to health. Soon the former office manager had turned her self-imposed therapy into a business as a professional dog walker.

Three years and many word-of-mouth client referrals later, Lajambe opened her one-stop shop for dogs last fall on St. Anne’s Road in St. Vital.

Stay N Play offers services any dog owner could want or need. Services include dog walking of course, as well as pet sitting, obedience and recreational agility training, dog grooming, walk-in nail trims, pet taxi, boarding and more.

Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., dogs of all breeds and sizes can romp in the safety of the 1,200 square foot dog daycare.

“Each service is individualized to our clients – so we work with them to accommodate their needs,” Lajambe notes.

This could mean conducting a puppy check where a Stay N Play employee drops in to a client’s home to let a puppy out, clean up any “accidents” and feed it if required. Stay N Play dog walkers serve one household at a time for one hour so dogs get one-on-one attention.

Other Stay N Play conveniences include a pet taxi service for people who don’t have vehicles, are shut-ins, or don’t have time to take their pets to vet appointments. “We will even arrange to pick up dog food,” Lajambe says.

Stay N Play offers in-store and mobile grooming services on a part time and evening

basis, providing bathing, brushing, haircuts and trims.

Staffed 24/7 by a crew of friendly, well-trained fellow dog lovers, Lajambe notes that Stay N Play is fully focused on the wellbeing of the dogs in their care.

Bonded and insured, all Stay N Play employees are certified pet sitters and most are certified to perform pet first aid. They are able to give medications and needles if required. Lajambe herself is Pet First Aid certified.

Daycare dogs get a thorough, three-page “pet profile” with information on medications, allergies, food/feeding requirements, and emergency and vet contact information. An open concept play area, a video surveillance system, and a ratio of one staff person per 10 dogs means dogs are always carefully monitored.

“Down the road we hope to have a video camera system where owners can watch their pets online remotely – it’s just another way we can bring peace of mind to our clients, “ Lajambe says.

Jump For Joy Winnipeg businessman, doctor, and parent Arnold Cohn is putting a fresh bounce and spin on the city’s entertainment scene with his new Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park. Located at the corner of McCreary Road and McGillivray Blvd opposite Fort Whyte Nature Centre, the new facility offers 26,000 square feet of allage activity that will have people of all ages springing their way to fun and fitness.

Indeed, bouncing has never been more fun.

Says Cohn, “It all started with a family trip to Minneapolis and an afternoon at the Sky Zone Park there. It was lively and everyone including the staff was having a great time. We asked ourselves why Winnipeg didn’t have a place like this. What we saw was a state-of-the-art activity centre that was clean and comfortable. The jumpers on the courts were closely monitored by staff with a fun focused professional attitude that kept the excitement flowing. This was a

place where you could really let go in a welldesigned safe environment,” he says, adding that the experience made up his mind to obtain the rights to a Winnipeg Sky Zone and get working on the details.

The newly constructed centre will open this summer at the south-end Winnipeg site and will be the 40th in North America. Born from the vision of US entrepreneur Rick Platt, who developed the concept for a unique brand of professional sport entertainment, Sky Zone came about after non-pros like local Las Vegas skateboarders and others wanted to use the facility just for its bounceability. Platt saw the demand grow and his indoor trampoline park concept took flight. That was 2004.

In August, Cohn will open Canada’s fourth Sky Zone. “The Park consists of several high-end trampoline courts, with an array of trampolines

placed horizontally and surrounded by trampolines placed at angles that serve as the court’s walls,” says Cohn, reporting that trampolines will be interconnected and that guests will be required to wear specially designed socks that will provide better grip for jumping. “The socks will be available for purchase at Sky Zone and can be re-used thereafter.”

Sky Zone will offer numerous activities, such as open jump time for walk-in guests, 3-D Dodgeball for tournaments and leagues, SkyRobics (Sky Zone’s unique take on aerobics) fitness classes, high performance cross training, birthday party packages, group events and corporate team building outings, summer camp programs and more.

“The key is to make an impact and bring a benefit to the space without overwhelming it,” Dufault explains. “For each kit, we stitched together a contemporary modern look with accent components, like the fireplace roof and the glass fibre reinforced concrete curved bar countertop. At the same time, we also maintained a rustic look with the tumbled stone. That way, these kits will fit into an established or a new yard equally well.”

“We’re really focused on treating backyards as another room; a seamless addition to the home.”

While function was a key consideration, style was definitely not overlooked.

“We focused on the value-added aspect of our kits, how to make them user-friendly while incorporating increasingly complex elements,” Dufault says.

For example, extensive research and development ensures the high calibre nature of the fireplace unit so it withstands high temperatures. Silicone gaskets in both the fireplace and pizza oven help prevent smoke leakage. The curved bar, meanwhile, is assembled in seamless pieces so it fits together simply.

n just a few short years, the young, multi-talented and hardworking professionals behind Kindret Landscaping have made their mark on Winnipeg’s commercial and residential landscaping scene.

An award-winning, full-service landscape construction firm, Kindret Landscaping specializes in design, build and maintenance for their clients – a roster that is growing almost purely by word of mouth.

Ryan Kindret, Principal Manager of the third-generation company,

brings to Kindret Landscaping the same brand of knowledge and work ethic demonstrated by his father and grandfather.

at a multi-residential complex on 75, 77, 79 Swindon Way and 85 Swindon Way. Kindret Landscaping also won in the under $15,000 category for landscaping of a completely renovated condominium complex on 892 Grosvenor Avenue. This project was designed and built to enhance the new façade and create a welcoming yard for residents and their guests.

After building up the foundation around the perimeter of the building, crushed black granite was added on top, punctuated with plantings of vibrant green junipers.

Dark brown mulch in the front and side yards frame the complex, while “Miss Kim” lilac bushes were planted on either side of the front sidewalk. “These bloom in the spring and help establish and define the front pathway,” Kindret says.

Larger stones were included near downspouts to effectively drain water away from the foundation.

The result is a low-maintenance, eye-catching landscape that seamlessly replicates and anchors the building.

From small residential designbuild to full scale commercial landscaping, “we are well-equipped to tackle any landscaping project,” Kindret says, noting the company has access to a wide network of subtrades and contractors.

done, and to ensure the highest quality of workmanship,” states Kreviazuk, adding that their team of installers have worked together season after season, and carry the same level of commitment to quality as the two owners.

It’s quite obvious clients are extremely happy with the job Samson Pools does, as 80 to 85 percent of the company’s business comes from referrals. They also seem to come from knowing the family name, and the quality it stands for.

“We have clients say ‘your dad [Sam Kreviazuk who has had over 45 years of experience building pools in Manitoba] built my parents’ pool,’ so they come to us to get theirs,” he says.

As the company continues to grow, which includes adding a new 10,000-square-foot warehouse for equipment and supplies, the commitment from the two partners and their team is unchanging.

From start to finish, dependent on the weather, Samson Pools’ installation process takes approximately one week. The pool kit comes swim ready with a pump, cartridge filters, efficient natural gas heater, and an ultra-violet light system killing 99.9 percent of all bacteria and germs, all set in place for clean, clear water as soon as it’s up and running.

Along with the stress-free installation process, the fact both Jonathan Kreviazuk and Blair Irwin, owners of Samson Pools, are onsite during the project speaks to their level of quality and commitment.

Confidence and expertise are key. That’s why the owners of this stately Wellington Crescent estate entrusted 3 Seasons Landscaping shortly after they purchased this riverside property and set out to build their dream home on the site.

3 Seasons came up with a well-received alternative to the requested standard circular drive with a looped driveway resembling a backwards “P”.

“It still functions as a circular drive, but allows for much more lawn, shrub, perennial garden… and greater curb appeal,” Weinberg says.

The award-winning design build company delivered with a multi-phased, thoughtful plan that factored in all the elements the homeowners desired, all while complementing the home and the surrounding historic neighbourhood.

Mature trees beautifully frame the front of the home. Moving towards the street, the trees give way to shrubs like ninebark, barberry and lilac before culminating in perennials, with mass plantings of sedum, daylilies and a variety of ornamental grasses.

“We were invited in while the house plan was in its conceptual stage and started working on the landscape design,” says 3 Seasons owner Gary Weinberg.

The backyard posed a number of challenges, including inadequate drainage, grading issues and the homeowners’ request that all existing mature trees remain and be protected.

The homeowners’ wish list included extensive gardens, a new pool, entertainment areas, an outdoor kitchen and a dining area. They wanted their landscaping to reflect their new home: regal and spacious, yet comfortable and inviting.

The 3 Seasons team excavated and properly regraded the yard, then incorporated paved decking, steps and retaining walls to account for height changes between the home, pool and entertaining areas and the gardens beyond. A formal raised terrace leads down to a sprawling pool deck of precast travertine slabs mortared onto a poured concrete deck. Low hedges and

raised annual planters wrapping around the pool and terrace provide a sense of separation from the other more intimate entertaining spaces.

A raised Roman stone walkway leads to the dining and outdoor kitchen areas, anchored by the same materials found in the pool area. Injecting visual warmth and texture is a composite deck that encircles a raised planter before forming a boardwalk that continues along the side of the home.

The kitchen area, complete with fridge and gas BBQ, is a room unto itself, housed within a custom-made pergola that mirrors the home’s geometric lines and Tyndall stone foundation.

A flagstone path starts the progression to the naturalized area beyond. Here, a natural crushed stone pathway meanders through a sprawling shaded garden with shrubs and perennials like

hydrangea, ligularia, hosta and ferns. A verdant backdrop to the dining space, this garden area acts as a natural privacy screen. 3 Seasons installed lighting to highlight several mature trees, as well as along the pathways and stairs for safety.

Staged over two summers, this 2012 Landscape Manitoba Award of Excellence winning yard began as a blank slate; a solid plan helped it come to fruition.

“I always suggest creating a master plan that can always be divided into phases that meet your budget,” Weinberg says.

A balance of landscape and architecture, this yard is a showpiece property the owners love and proudly share with their guests. They’ve hired 3 Seasons to maintain it as it matures and grows.

From its warm and inviting entertaining area, to its abundant shrubs and trees, this large yard has the perfect balance of natural beauty and flawless finishes that make it a showpiece property.

Designed and installed by Silver Stone Landscaping, the yard’s good looks are enjoyed almost as much by the neighbours as the owners.

“We started planning this yard in November 2011, and worked with the homeowners from start to finish to ensure they got the yard they wanted for their young family,” says Silver Stone owner Kyle Thibeault. “There was a mutual sharing of ideas to make it come to life.”

The home and property, located in the newer Kingswood South community near La Salle and backing onto a golf course, came with a number of considerations. These included privacy, as well as low maintenance foliage and extensive hardscaping.

Silver Stone landscaped the entire grounds, including the front yard, starting from scratch.

This meant essentially sculpting and moulding the yard, creating hills and berms to add visual interest in an otherwise flat landscape.

In addition, Silver Stone added a driveway extension to the front yard.

Black granite boulders were hauled in and placed throughout the yard to add texture and height. Manitoba-sourced “Falcon Beach” decorative stone in shades of black, pink and rust was used in various beds to anchor plantings of shrubs, trees and hardy perennials.

“The homeowners had an extensive list of plants they wanted incorporated,” Thibeault says. “We planted shrubs and trees that exhibited lots of colour at different times throughout the year, such as trees that flowered in the spring and others with vibrant leaf colour in the fall.”

A large area was kept grassed to accommodate a children’s play structure, and to keep the overall open look and feel of the yard and surrounding neighbourhood.

To preserve the view of the golf course from the house, but at the same time provide privacy and prevent errant golf balls from entering the yard, the Silver Stone team came up with the ideal solution: a stand of Dakota Pinnacle birch trees and spruce trees incorporated around the yard’s perimeter. This hardy birch, with its spire-like growth habit, has glorious fall colour that contrasts beautifully with the dark green spruce.

Combined, the trees provide a functional natural screen and a stunning backdrop, particularly when enjoying the yard’s pièce de la résistance: the entertaining area.

Built off the deck leading from the rear of the home, this was designed as a contemporary outdoor extension of the indoor living space. A Barkman Roman paver circle kit was installed to define the central courtyard, which was then graced with an attractive custom made fire bowl.

Silver Stone built raised planters of Barkman “Pisa II” stone to further distinguish this area.

The planters were filled with black mulch and planted with a variety of low growing shrubs to add a further level of privacy.

“A custom lighting system was incorporated into the planters so that the whole space can be enjoyed into the evening hours,” Thibeault notes. “It’s breathtaking at night.”

Completed last summer, the yard is a true reflection of the homeowners’ family-centred lifestyle. As with all Silver Stone Landscaping projects, Thibeault says, the clients were engaged from the start.

“They were part of it every step of the way.”

A Complete Package Development

Winnipeg’s Bridgwater community continues to grow. Located amid maturing development in the city’s south end between Waverley St and Kenaston Blvd, the neighbourhood has stood out as a leader among the most popular new housing sectors in the city. Now work continues on new areas beyond the initial project, Bridgwater Forest. Under development are Bridgwater Lakes, Bridgwater Centre and Bridgwater Trails, all developments that each brings unique aspects to the market.

Describing the community, Dwayne Rewniak, Director of Land Development with Manitoba Housing and Community Development, the organization behind Bridgwater, says they looked for an overall vision that went outside the mould of the typical new suburban neighbourhood.

“Bridgwater is all about creating the right mix of housing and density, having homes with an emphasis on traditional designs, and getting people outside with easier access to pathways and destinations,” says Rewniak.

At Bridgwater Forest, residents are blessed with 25 acres of mature trees that create a wonderful canopy and atmosphere for the neighbourhood. In Bridgwater Lakes, there are three bodies of water that provide lovely amenity lots and large natural elements to the overall design. Bridgwater Trails is the third residential community under plan, and like its name implies, it offers a mass of trails and pathways that combine and intersect with a total Bridgwater network of 30 kilometers of bike and hiking trails, and 50 kilometers of dedicated sidewalks. Bridgwater Centre is the heart of the community, where retail, office

and business uses will be blended with multi family residences in a continuation of Bridgwater’s neo-traditional design style.

According to Rewniak, the neo traditional architecture is certainly an aspect that visually spans the communities. Another element that offers continuity is the ‘visitable’ designs builders are making available in some 50 percent of all homes in Bridgwater Lakes and Bridgwater Trails. These visitable residences are planned to accommodate the needs of those with mobility issues and permit a greater degree of aging in place. Here, homes feature easier access to street grade, and larger doorways and hallways for those who may be utilizing wheelchairs to get around. Main floors also offer full bathrooms to make life less daunting for seniors and others who are not fond of stairs.

Currently Bridgwater Lakes is progressing well with 200 homes already occupied and hundreds more under construction. Once complete, the neighbourhood will offer 1190 lots and homes from 20 of the province’s top builders. In fact, the builders have been busy constructing 25 showhomes to highlight Phase II of Bridgwater Lakes that will open this September. Here, Rewniak notes that they are also now in the midst of providing all the services in Phase III and IV of the neighbourhood.

Bridgwater Trails is the third residential neighbourhood in the plan. The developer received approval to get this section under way in 2012, and the first phase is now being serviced.

“Expect lots to become available later in 2013,” says Rewniak. He reports that the idea in

Bridgwater Trails is ‘walkability,’ thanks to a myriad of pathways in the section. There is also connectivity built in to the trail system to the other Bridgwater communities, the City’s Active Transportation Network and easy access to the coming retail components of Bridgwater Centre.

Bridgwater Centre stands out as an opportunity to create something fresh and new within the Winnipeg housing market. This section is just getting underway and servicing is expected to be complete by year’s end. The area features a focus on walkable living with pedestrian oriented streetscapes, as well as mixed-use blends of retail shops, offices and multi family residences. The ‘town site’ is 75 acres and will provide as many as 1000 units dedicated to multi family residences.

“We looked widely for best practices in new home developments of this kind. What we discovered we adapted to Manitoba,” says Rewniak, commenting that they will take much from neighbourhoods like Osborne Village and build a town centre that will be at once familiar and new to Winnipeggers considering a new home in the Bridgwater neighbourhood.

“We have strived to create a complete community on these lands. Our approach has earned us the approval of homebuyers who have purchased properties at such a rate that we are running far ahead of schedule. This shows that factors such as visitable housing, mixed use developments, and plans that get people out of their homes and onto neighbourhood trails and pathways are what people want and healthy communities need.”

Bella’s D-Condo Journal Monday June 15, 2015 Awoke early to walk over to morning Yoga before riding the bike to work on Broadway. Love the sunlit rooms of my new condo. Thanks to the full wall of windows on my south facing apartment, the morning view really sets up my day.

Got home quickly after work. Big difference to not have to face traffic and a long drive. I’m so relaxed after the short bike ride. Going to the Jazz Festival in the Exchange tonight with Jason, and have to get dinner together fast. Glad I picked up some take-out from that little Italian place around the corner. I think I’ll sit on the terrace and eat my fettuccini with chopsticks.

Tuesday June 16, 2015 Jason and I walked home last night from the concert.

I love the tree-lined streets. It’s like living in a forest in the middle of downtown. We sat on the terrace looking across the river to Osborne Village. Jason made cocktails in the kitchen. He raves about the state-of-the art stainless steel appliances and the beautiful quartz countertops. I tell him the condo designers seemed to think of everything and my move-in was so simple. He tells me I’m beautiful.

I woke up to the smell of espresso coffee and the sunny view of treetops along the river. Jason wants me to take the day off and stroll with him to the Forks along the Riverwalk. I was amazed when I discovered the trail is attached to a walkway from the property.

Wednesday June 17, 2015 Glad we stayed in last night. The weather really turned ugly. The fabulous interior design makes it easy to just hang out at home. It’s so comfortable on the eyes. I heard the design was done by that guy Mike Niven that does all those amazing hotel interiors in Toronto. Jason says he’s happy to just sit looking out the windows from inside the huge living room and listen to some of the music we picked up at the Festival. I’m glad the

neighbours can’t hear him play the stereo. The walls are all concrete and steel, and those gorgeous hardwoods really soak up the sound. With all the windows closed, we can’t even hear the crazy wind outside. Wow, it’s really blowing out there!

Thursday June 18, 2015 Jason is happy I have indoor heated parking. The winds last night made a mess of the streets with branches everywhere. His new Audi is safe inside. I think he is downstairs washing it now in the on-site car wash. He loves that car.

I’m going to go in late and spend some time at the condo’s fitness facility before that big meeting this afternoon.

Friday June 19, 2015 I knocked them dead at the meeting yesterday. Had a power breakfast on the terrace off the study with star fruit and papaya from that store up the street, and did a full circuit on the machines in the fitness centre.

Then I pulled my thoughts together before walking

over to join legal and sales at the office. Love how the location of D Condo has made work and home so easy to manage!

Tonight we celebrate. First we will meet here to have a glass of wine and the six of us will take the Riverwalk to The Forks and that super restaurant Jason loves so much. After, we are going to Jen’s. She lives in St. Vital.

What a hassle. Guess we’ll take a cab. Wish she lived in the neighbourhood. Next week we are going to get together on our amenity floor. We have tons of room outdoors and there is even a BBQ and fireside lounge. I think this is going to be a popular destination.

“I was impressed by the use of materials that would typically be considered upgrades at other developments,” says Jen Mac, a local IT professional that likes the close proximity to the U of M as well as shopping in the Kenaston Commons area. It’s a New Show Who doesn’t love a good “housewarming” party? With over 200 leaders from the interior design and construction industry, as well as past clients, The Floor Show celebrated the re-opening of their Waverley showroom in May, launching a new look and a host of new products.

Since opening the location in 2007, the company has committed to offering customers high-quality lines, many exclusive to The Floor Show. Keeping with this idea, committing to renovating the 5,000-square-foot showroom every five years or so, ensures The Floor Show’s installments, displays and products are always on-trend.

“When we were trying to decide what changes to make for 2013, we realized that many of our showroom floors were either discontinued or outdated. wide-plank, low-gloss, wire brushed, or hand scraped. Yet, unlike their natural counterpart, both materials can provide a higher durability and water resistance, allowing them to be placed in rooms that might sometimes be damp without having to give up the look of the real thing.

“These products are extremely convincing, and can be a nice alternative to natural wood. There are some pretty nice things happening with both materials,” says Rivington.

He states while vinyl plank is starting to take over laminate in terms of sales, both have their pros and cons. Vinyl plank, which was once only used in commerial applications, made its way into the residential market because of its durability, as well as its lack of reaction to water (since it’s glued to the subfloor, in the case of a basement, it won’t swell with moisture). While laminate, which has to be floated, feels “softer” than vinyl when walked upon.

that blends harmony with nature and human emotion through a wide variety of colours and patterns. Knocking Off the Hardwoods

When it comes to hard surfaces, the “wood look” is in, but the actual material may vary.

If you were to scroll through the images on this page, you’d probably be hard pressed to pick out which are hardwoods, and which are the look-a-likes. With a selection of materials to choose from, including ceramic and laminate, customers can get the look they want, but the surface that’s suited to their lifestyle.

“Rule number one when it comes to hard surfaces, “ states Tim Pariseau, Operations Manager of Curtis Carpets, “is water and wood don’t mix - meaning hardwoods should stay out of the bathroom, laundry room, and back entrance.” Yet, with the latest ceramic options, homeowners can keep the flow of the hardwood look right into these sometimesdamp areas.

“Ceramic flooring offers some tile in the same width and the same colors as hardwood. You can go contemporary or classic. There are hundreds of styles to choose from,” he explains.

“So it looks like the hardwoods run into the wet areas, yet, it is much easier to maintain and there’s not that concern about warping.”

Democratic design comes to Manitoba

November 28, 2012, marked the date many Manitobans had long been waiting for: the day retail icon IKEA opened a store in Winnipeg. Since then, scores of eager customers have visited the enormous blue and yellow building on Kenaston, seeking affordable products to improve their homes and lives.

Few of us, however, have had the chance to chat with Lars Engman, one of IKEA’s principal designers… in Sweden.

It was just one of many memorable moments for Style Manitoba’s art director Paul Butters and wife Tannis, who got a rare behind-thescenes glimpse into the “heart of IKEA” during a Canadian press tour last summer. The tour took place in the Småland region of southern Sweden in the town of Älmhult. Älmhult is the site of IKEA’s first store, and the only place to see the whole IKEA pipeline at work.

The two-day visit started with a tour of the IKEA Museum. IKEA has come a long way from its first advertisement published in 1945 with the headline “Ballpoint pens in bulk.” The company started to sell furniture in 1948, and some IKEA products have been available for 102 | STYLE MANITOBA | Summer 2013

decades. The BILLY bookcase, for example, has been sold since 1979.

With 20 different rooms showcasing IKEA design through the decades, Paul says he “enjoyed the retro feel” of the museum.

A guided tour of IKEA Tillsammans, IKEA’s corporate culture centre and employee training headquarters, gave insight into the company’s values. Ever since founder Ingvar Kamrad established IKEA, employees have been encouraged to

“IKEA believes that everyone should have functional, beautifully designed, yet affordable things,” Tannis says.

Tour participants met Johanna Jelinek, who designed a wall lamp for IKEA’s 2012 PS Collection.

Product designers were challenged to “take something from the past and modernize it for today,” Tannis says. For example, Jelinek’s gooseneck-inspired LED wall lamp can be folded flat against the wall when not in use, thus meeting IKEA’s PS requirements

of simplicity, ingenuity and functionality.

Further proof of strong design was on display at the IKEA Hotel, furnished entirely by IKEA. “It was neat to see how their furniture was used in a commercial space,” Tannis says.

Next stop: the IKEA Testlab where IKEA’s products undergo rigorous testing before gracing the pages of the IKEA catalogue. For years, the coveted catalogue has had many people dreaming about the fun and cleverly designed living spaces laid out for us in full colour. The group

toured the huge IKEA studio where the catalogue photo shoots take place.

“It was like a film set, detailed right down to the little tea lights,” Paul notes. As a truly global brand, IKEA attracts media professionals from around the world. “What amazed me was the number of different nationalities in this little place in the south of Sweden,” Paul adds.

Since 1956, when its first table was disassembled and flat packed for shipping, environmental sustainability, along with logistics and transport have been central to IKEA operations. Sophisticated warehousing and logistics were on full display at the massive Distribution Centre, where “robots pick up products and move them to a conveyor belt – it’s brilliant,” Paul says.

designer Lars Engman, both Tannis and Paul were struck by the “friendly, humble and relaxed attitude” demonstrated by IKEA employees.

Tannis describes IKEA Winnipeg store general manager Stephen Bobko, who was also on the tour, as “incredibly enthusiastic and engaged.”

When Winnipeggers welcomed IKEA in late November, the Butters were there, along with a greater appreciation for the company and the people behind its popular products.

“Understanding IKEA’s culture made it different than just another store opening,” Tannis says.

Clear Concepts Most people may not even notice glass elements when they walk past, but MPD Glass and Vinyl Graphics are taking clear concepts to the next level, creating highly customizable pieces that combine advertising with art so that this time people will stop and take notice.

A prime example is a collaborative effort on a stunning sign and interior glass art for SkinRhum, a skin clinic in East St. Paul.

“We worked in collaboration with designer Shauna Boychuk from For Space Sake to create enlarged images of microscopic toads ‘pads’ on their feet, as well as a version of a microscopic image of a skin cell,” states Chris Kaleta of MPD Glass and Vinyl Graphics.

In order to get depth and detail, MPD took the image, desaturated it, and then added colour in specific spots for added vibrancy. The company had the images printed onto a film and applied it to 10 millimetre-thick glass, which was then broken along the edges and sandblasted for a rough, yet refined, appearance. The pieces were illuminated from the backside and mounted off the wall using four-inch standoffs.

The same artistic technique was used for the clinic’s sign, which featured the same sandblasted edges, and vinyl lettering for a unique name display.

MPD Glass and Vinyl Graphics can also transfer their skills in residential applications, specializing in decorative glass etching and vinyl films for exterior doors, interior doors, and glass walls, as well as offering a line of thermoformed glass in different textures for kitchen backsplashes and countertops.

Three-season sunrooms can take you away from the summer bugs, the winter cold, and keep your outdoor living lasting longer.

While many of us spent this long winter huddled up inside dreaming of our deck, many forward thinking people were enjoying the warmth of the sun while the snow was still flying. Three-season sunrooms can bring you out into nature on even some of Winnipeg’s colder days. In turn, when the summer bugs drive you in out of nature, that extra bright space in your home also beckons you.

First and foremost, the benefit a three-season sunroom is just that, being able to enjoy an outdoor, enclosed space almost all year round.

On average, sunrooms users can enjoy their room on a -10 to -15 day, with no additional heat and still be comfortable. Yet, states Steve Sarens of Sunshade Products Ltd. even he tends to undersell the sunrooms capabilities.

“Being in the sunroom industry for over 35 years, it’s amazing how easy it is to take things for granted,” he says. “I always knew it was nice to have a sunroom (my customers have been telling us for years) but now I am even more convinced.”

He points to the three-season sunroom the company built on their building for display purposes three years ago. From November 26th to May 1st (between noon and 3 p.m.) they recorded the outside temperatures (with and without wind) and the temperature inside the sunroom, which didn’t have any additional heat, just solar gain. The results were quite amazing.

“There were 29 days when the sunroom was 0 - 9 degrees C inside, 30 days when the room was 10 - 19 degrees, and 32 days when the

room was 20 degrees or warmer inside. From November 26 until May, there were only nine days when the inside temperature of this room dipped below 0. The coldest inside temperature was minus 7.5 degrees when the outside temperature was minus 39,” recalls Sarens.

Even on a minus 47 day, the inside temperature came in at an astounding minus 1, while a minus 31 exterior temperature left the interior at plus 5, a whopping 36 degree difference.

“Through proper design you can make your sunroom very functional in the colder months (when the sun is low in the sky) but not too warm in the summer (when the sun is high in the sky), and that’s why it is important to deal with someone who has the experience and capabilities to custom design your room,” he states.

For those that want to add value to their homes prior to a sale, window retrofits can put as much as 75 percent of the project cost back in their pockets after the sold sign goes up. For others interested in improving their quality of life in homes they don’t expect to sell anytime soon, windows represent one of the most solid investments families can make. A plan to put new life into old windows or remake exteriors with a full retrofit is money well spent.

Manitoba Hydro has built an impressive case for energy saving retrofits that include things like new windows. “Heating a home in our climate can be expensive,” says Hydro spokesperson Colleen Kuruluk. She suggests that exterior doors and windows that are in poor condition can add needlessly to a home’s heating bills. Moreover, a well-done home energy retrofit that includes doors and windows can make residences more comfortable by reducing drafts and helping with winter heating and summer cooling. She reports that some 13 percent of Manitoba’s annual energy use goes to heat homes. By getting smart with energy use, valuable resources can be saved and re-directed. “A retrofit can also improve the appearance and value of your home or eliminate problems such as condensation.”

Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart Residential Loan Program helps get you going. Under the program, homeowners can borrow up to $7,500 to apply towards windows on a five-year term at 4.8 per cent. Monthly installments appear on your Manitoba Hydro bill.

“Contractors and retailers are very familiar with the program, and in most cases, will help fill out paperwork and work with us to get the approval process under way. The program is streamlined and has helped thousands of Manitobans reduce their energy costs each month. Why let money just go out the window?” Kuruluk points out that new energy efficient insulation, windows and furnaces also increase home comfort and value.

The homeowner of this Oak Bluff residence wasn’t shy about the design of this kitchen. It had to be unique, eye-catching, and something that had never been done before.

Thankfully, that’s what custom cabinet company Seine River Cabinets does.

While the pure black island, topped with a white Quartz counter top, is usually the epicentre of the kitchen, it’s the unique twotoned cabinets that truly define custom work.

The upper cabinetry features a light Shiitake colour, while the lowers took on a deeper Grotto tone. Both sets of doors were then handbrushed with a glaze to get the desired effect.

“We have never done so many techniques and colours in one kitchen before,” claims

Glenn Zebrynski, Seine River Cabinets. “It was something very creative, certainly not an everyday project.”

The staining and glazing technique is all done by hand, which is typically a longer process.

But as displayed here, well worth the wait. This is all done in the company’s in-house spray booth.

Inviting Design

Park Hill Homes and their clients teamed up with Jeff Johnson from Kitchen Craft’s design team to create this beautiful, family-friendly kitchen. The concept was to use warm wood tones to create an inviting atmosphere within the open concept home.

The clients wanted their cabinetry to run right to the top of their 10-foot ceiling without the use of a framed bulkhead. Kitchen Craft designed this using a combination of cabinetry.

The first section features longer doors stacked with smaller cabinets with glass doors with interior pot lights to give some depth and translucency to the space. A custom box was then built using stacked crown moulding to fill in the rest of the space to the ceiling.

The Lexington door style combined cherry wood cabinets in a warm cappuccino finish with stainless steel pull hardware in various lengths to complement the professional quality appliances.

The stunning centerpiece is certainly the 12 x 4-foot island, which features a large granite countertop with enough room to either do homework on while dinner is being prepped, double as an extra work space for the owner’s homebusiness, or as a gathering spot for entertaining.

The island also features additional drawers for files, and a secondary prep sink.

Two six-foot wide floor-to-ceiling cabinets that face each other were used for the walk-in pantry, creating enough storage space for all the family’s food and kitchenware.
