the agenda Manitoba’s homebuilding industry is clearly thriving - judging by the quantity and quality of showhomes on display at the Spring 2011 Parade of Homes, visitors are in for a visual feast. Once again, many of our province’s best homebuilders are rolling out their finest designs and superb finishing details sure to appeal to even those with the most discerning tastes. Set in a wide variety of areas throughout the city and beyond, from more established communities to new developments, consumers have a plethora of choices when it comes to selecting not only a home, but also a neighbourhood in which to set down their roots. Running March 5-27, the homes and neighbourhoods on display are well worth visiting!

Another must-attend event this season is the annual Home Expressions Show. Held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre from March 31st to April 3rd, this show does not disappoint. From special guest Mike Holmes to a huge variety of exhibitor booths, it is an incredibly good source for ideas and inspiration. This is a year of celebration for two of Style Manitoba’s many valued clients - both Krevco and Dufresne turn 30 in 2011. And later this year, Style Manitoba will celebrate its 15th anniversary. Watch for future news on how these occasions will be marked as the year unfolds.

Even before stepping through the front door of this Irwin showhome at 218 Oak Forest in The Oaks, visitors realize this is no ordinary home. The remarkable design capabilities of the builder are in evidence right from the exterior, where a combination of cultured stone and earth tone acrylic stucco blends perfectly with the stunning outdoor setting.

A natural black walnut hardwood from Curtis Carpets is the ideal backdrop for the varying tones of the kitchen.

Clad in stone from Alsip’s, the façade sets a majestic tone.

A contemporary chandelier from Total Lighting centres the dining room.

The builder tried to maintain as many trees as possible while providing the homeowner with plenty of opportunities to interact with the natural environment. Stone steps follow the flow of the land towards the pond. At the rear of the house, a large deck overlooks the Assiniboine River. And on the second floor, a spacious balcony extends the living space outdoors while giving yet another perspective of the forested landscape. “We always strive to pay attention to our exteriors, to make them as important as our interiors,” says Irwin Homes’ in-house designer,

Krista Koop. Accordingly, the garage features a decorative door, a taupe overlay accenting a darker tone. The roofline is impeccably balanced to emphasize the three stone-clad pillars that form the fittingly grand entrance to the home. Surrounded by panes of glass, an oversized door brings visitors into a spacious foyer. Immediately to the right of the door is the formal dining room, defined by hardwood flooring and a two-step ceiling drywall detail painted in the same colour as the wall.

“We have very talented trades people,” notes Koop, adding the team’s highly skilled drywaller makes it possible to create custom details rather than being limited by pre-purchased applications. To the left of the staircase is a den—ideally situated for a home office—with virtually floorto-ceiling windows. Jeld-Wen provided the same height to the windows in the great room, affording a fabulous view of the pond on one side and the river on the other. “We always strive to take full advantage of the views,” notes Koop. In the great room, the windows flank the fireplace with its sleek contemporary tile and hearth-free design. To tie the two spaces together, the builder used the same tile in the kitchen backsplash, this time flanked by creamy subway tile in a vertical application that complements the flow of Norcraft’s Yorkshire cabinet styling. An ideally situated bar, with wine fridge and a hanging wine glass unit, is conveniently located between the great room and the kitchen. Perfectly designed for entertaining, the space also includes additional built-in storage in chocolate-stained maple cabinetry. On the other hand, most of the maple cabinets in the kitchen are finished in a creamy soft Karena Rose, with only the island in the darker contrasting stain. In a further departure from using the same stain on the cabinetry throughout, Koop selected the chocolate for the lower level and for the main bathroom

upstairs, while using the lighter finish in the master ensuite. Both bathrooms feature double sinks separated by a storage tower. In the main bathroom, the toilet and shower are conveniently separated by a door from the vanity/sink area. Meanwhile, in the master ensuite no door was necessary for the luxuriously spacious walk-in shower. While the lower level shower was enclosed by glass doors from Shodor, the ingenious design of the ensuite shower eliminated that need. “The whole frame of the shower is lined in granite, which is a better seal than tile,” notes Koop. All the ensuite countertops are also granite, including the top of the make-up vanity adjacent to the shower. Nearby, the tile-clad bathtub is located under a large window that sports an amazing view of the landscape.

Elegant bath fixtures from Robinson Bath coordinate perfectly with the master ensuite. The vistas from the master bedroom are equally grand, yet the space also feels cozy, thanks to a gas fireplace and a separate area for dressing. Equipped with a bar fridge as well as two walk-in closets, this raised space allowed the builder to increase the ceiling height of the great room below. Just as ingeniously designed is the loft over the great room, a fabulous space for work or play, with built-in desks and large wrap-around windows. The second floor also has a separate exercise room for working out. The lower level, on the other hand, is definitely made for recreation and entertaining. Besides

A dressing area with two walk-in closets and a mini-fridge is ingeniously located three steps up from the master bedroom.

A sumptuous sectional from Dufresne is just the right dimension and shape for the spacious lower level. Irwin Homes used high quality materials from the second floor right to the lower level where the bar sports a granite countertop by Granite Mountain. encompassing another bedroom and a full bathroom, there is a spacious open media room as well as a separate recreation area with a full bar. The self-contained unit has a bar fridge and a dishwasher, eliminating the need to carry dishes upstairs for clean-up. This is just one small example of the intelligent layout that results from Irwin’s meticulous design process. Another would be the dual exits to the wrap-around deck from the main floor. One door opens out from the eating area. The other is located between the mudroom and the kitchen. “It’s a little more utilitarian,” notes Koop, adding that this covered portion of the deck would be ideal for a barbecue. Just like every other feature, the deck was very well thought out, tiered so as not to obstruct the view from the great room. The result is truly a grand design, an exquisite home, where every piece fits together like the carefully realized vision of a work of art. *This home is currently being marketed by Powell Marketing Group. spring 2011 | STYLE MANITOBA | 15

With today’s choices, does an RRSP still make sense? Recent reports in the financial media have questioned the ongoing value of contributing to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). The two supposed “threats” to the RRSP? The flexibility offered by the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) and the favourable tax treatment that capital gains and dividends receive when they are held outside a registered plan. The truth is that, for most investors, an RRSP remains the best choice for saving for retirement. Here’s why.

Paid in part by United Financial. The United Financial brand of solutions are managed by CI Investments Inc. Commissions, trailing commissions, management fees and expenses may all be associated with investments in United Pools and the use of the asset management service. Mutual funds are not guaranteed, their values changes frequently and past performance may not be repeated. Please read the United Pools prospectus and consult your advisor before investing.

The RRSP was designed to help Canadians save enough for a comfortable retirement. The ability to deduct your contributions from your taxable income gives you a tax break — and an annual incentive. The tax consequences of early withdrawals discourage you from using your RRSP for mad money or a vacation fund. Top that off with tax-deferred growth and it’s clear why an RRSP should remain the cornerstone of your retirement savings strategy. The TFSA, however, can also form part of your retirement savings. While investments in a Registered Retirement Income Fund (wound down from an RRSP) offer tax deferral until withdrawn, TFSA withdrawals have no tax consequences. However, the TFSA’s annual contribution limit is just $5,000 — which is, for most investors, well below their RRSP limit. In addition, the TFSA’s withdrawal flexibility can be useful for shorter-term goals, and is potentially too tempting for long-term goals like retirement. Outside of a registered plan, interest, dividend income, and realized capital gains are all taxed differently. But by putting your RRSP money into several asset classes, you can lower the overall risk of your RRSP and help to keep your savings secure. “We’re here to help,” says Curtis Cross, Senior Financial Advisor with Assante Financial Management Ltd. “At Assante, we will work with you to allocate investments among your RRSP, TFSA, and non-registered savings in a way that works best to achieve your retirement and shorter-term investing goals.”

Nott Your Average Car Dealer By Kelly Gray Photography: Michael Roberts Winnipeg’s Nott Autocorp is building loyalty with each car they sell. In fact, their word of mouth reputation has earned them some high praise from customers, making them a car dealership with one of the most loyal followings in the city, if not Canada. Maria Vann had been a regular customer of a local Cadillac dealer for years until she heard about Nott. “My husband played Hawkeyes junior football with Trevor Nott, so we thought we’d see what he could do when it came time to shop for a new car. Wow - were we surprised by the no pressure professional attitude and their ability to save us money!” she says, remarking that Nott was able to find her dream car, a Cadillac XLR convertible, that was available for thousands of dollars less than she expected to pay. “I was so happy; we came back in six months and bought another car. Now my sister has bought a car there, and the rest of my family is looking at vehicles,” says Vann, remembering her sister’s experience. “She came in looking for an Equinox, and Trevor had her drive away in a Lexus for the same money. She’s still amazed.” Maria had had other experiences buying in the US, and discovered that while the prices seemed great, the reality was the process is fraught with challenges that tend to bring the price up substantially. “Nott is looking in the US and they have the experience to bring in cars at lower prices and then pass this along to their customers, who get all the benefit of US buying without the incredible hassle factor,”

Maria Vann and family with her Cadillac Escalade. she says, emphasizing that she was impressed by Trevor Nott’s ability to consistently find cars which are perfectly suited to their customers needs. Tim Prokipchuk is another great example of Nott’s ability to satisfy their customers and

exceed expectations. Tim had met Trevor at a recent sports dinner where NFL QB Payton Manning was the keynote speaker. “I’d driven by his dealership a few times and was impressed by the quality of the cars on the lot. I was looking for a new car and had decided to move up to a luxury experience. I researched the market and had already taken Audi off my list as being outside my pricing comfort zone. I was looking at purchasing a BMW X5 or an Acura. Once Trevor realized I wanted the Audi but was willing to compromise to achieve the price range, he got to work and found me the car I wanted at a price I could afford – an Audi Q7.” Both Tim and Maria see the entire Nott experience as being outside the norm of their typical car purchase. “From the service area where they made my new Audi look amazing at delivery to the relaxed atmosphere, everything was like a boutique dealership where you feel like the only customer,” says Tim. “This is really what a dealership should be,” Maria concludes. Nott Autocorp has been recognized as the 11th Fastest Growing Company in Manitoba and is located on Lagimodiere on the northeast edge of the city. For more information visit www. nottautocorp.com

Star 2010 was a good year for Mercedes-Benz, and an even better year for Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg. Both saw record sales with the Winnipeg dealership working to earn its first Star Dealer Award that was handed off this past January 12th for 2011. The Star Dealers Award is the luxury car manufacturer’s most prestigious accolade, and offered to only those top performers across the country that consistently exceed expectations.

Here Brian Lowes, President Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg, comments that they had set their sights on the award a few years ago, but saw that it was a challenging task that required significant teamwork and organization. Two years ago, he set the award as a dealership target for 2011, and then set the wheels in motion to accomplish this daunting task that involved every department and staffer at the Winnipeg facility.

Says Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada, “In 2010, we celebrated many significant milestones, established several new sales records, and ultimately, assumed the leadership position in the luxury segment in Canada by reporting by far the company’s best year ever. Our fascinating and highly desirable product range is the strongest it has been in our history, but the true catalyst to our success and a critical element to our continued growth is the strength of our dealership network. Our Star Dealers represent the finest examples of excellence from a truly exceptional group. As a central point of contact with our valued customers, each one should be commended for truly embodying our brand’s historic guiding principle of always offering our customers the absolute best in the premium segment.”

“The Star Dealer Award is focused on service excellence with a set of 15 metrics that measures performance with the biggest emphasis on service, satisfaction and sales. This is the first time a Winnipeg Mercedes dealer has won, and that says a lot, given the length of time the car company has been present in this market. We really had to work hard to achieve it,” says Lowes, stating that the effort has paid off in other ways. “We had a lot of buy-in from staff and the process touched a lot of people inside and outside the organization with the result that we have greatly sharpened our focus and our ability to deliver on our service promise,” says Brian, adding that the process was one where there was a great deal of department integration. “From the people on the lot to

the managers, everyone pulled together in a cohesive effort that made this award happen.” After 125 years in business as the world’s first carmaker, the star symbol is now finding its way into more garages and onto parking pads, thanks to the commitment of dealers like Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg. According to the Sales Manager Roger Man, they were able to pull together as a team and exceed sales targets and then provide the kind of service car owners only dream about. Lowes agrees, concluding that with more than a century of excellence behind them and the Star Dealers Award hanging in the showroom, 2011 will be a celebration for not just the manufacturer, but for their customers and the community as well. “This prestigious award is just the starting point for us. We plan to maintain our place at the top of both Mercedes dealerships and local car companies, and use our experience achieving the award as a steppingstone to even higher levels of service.”

Tapas style tasties Once we only wished for a bistro like Deseo: stripped of pretension, fusing Winnipeg’s humble now and illustrious then, and tabling gourmet tapas-style tasties that don’t break the bank. Poof! Co-owners Alejandro Mora and Chef Scott Bagshaw took the bull by the horns and made the dream reality. Housed in the grand Royal Albert Hotel, Deseo lets you lounge like it’s 1913 out in its wondrous glass atrium as you sip and sup. A to-the-point menu features all-day breakfast, imaginative soup, salad and sandwiches, as well as small and bigger bites perfect for sharing. But first - drinks! Bartender Alejandro lovingly shakes up killer cocktails. Mint-crowned Blackberry Mojitos are spiked with Nicaraguan rum and berry mash, and sunny Melon Pineapple Margaritas are served healthily rimmed with salt and stuffed with fresh fruit. Small Bites include seafood, meats, and beans accented with the likes of chimichurri, cream, and pickled peppers. For vegetarians, Beaner Fritters are a no-brainer. Falafel-esque ground bean balls get frittered crisp and accented with salsa verde, fresh cilantro, lime and spiced mayo. And -! que rico! - mussels! Swimming in white wine sauce perked up with house-smoked chili and big chunks of garlic, mussels are plump and zesty. The ruddy broth is so delicious you’ll slurp it like soup. Tumblers of red wine roll down the gullet. A blood-red aromatic Spanish vintage - Juan Gil’s Monastrell 2009 - balances wood and ripe fruit. And a cherry-red 2007 Termo & Lisboa from Portugal blends Tinta Roriz, Caladoc and Syrah, and goes down easy with a flashy finish. Evening specials do not disappoint. Crusted on the outside but ultra-soft inside, Roasted Pork Cheek floats upon smooth white corn porridge, is drizzled with saffron and chili infused tomato, and gets scattered with crunchy peanuts. Next up, chubby Prawns mingle with split fingerling potato and Spanish onion while lathering in an orangey smoked paprika sauce. For dessert, Chocolate Chili Cake is a shockingly dense and addictive flourless torte spiced up with chili, nutty with almond, and zippy with sea salt. But the Deseo dream doesn’t end there! 11am-3pm Sunday brunches rock your Huevos Rancheros with live music by local favourites from 12pm-2pm.

Feisty Hispanic Fare Flanked by Honduras, Guatemala and the Pacific, El Salvador may indeed be Central America’s smallest country, but this volcano-studded land is also a hotspot for indigenous culture, natural attractions, bountiful harvest and Spanish flair. La Fiesta Cafecito is El Salvador’s Winnipeg outpost. A wildly popular eatery that once wowed from a former Ellice Ave location, La Fiesta is now doling out its feisty Hispanic fare from a smart new casa in South St. Vital. The tropical getaway begins upon entry: vibrant colours, inspired accents and lively music awaken the senses, while super friendly service makes you feel right at home. The menu is divided into Aperitivos, Everyday Favourites, Signature Dinner Platters, and Friday and Saturday Features. Aperitivos fill out orders with steamed or fried yucca, nachos, quesadillas, or salad. But Everyday Favourites flex tamal and burrito muscle. Smooth banana leaf-wrapped corn tamales come “de Elote” (traditional corn masa) or “con Pollo” (with chicken) individually or as part of a platter. And burritos get stuffed vegetarian-style with beans, rice, and mozzarella - or chicken, beef, and shrimp for meat-lovers. Extra hungry? “Poderoso” super-sizes your burrito. Signature Platters showcase the pupusa, a traditional dish filling hand-made corn tortillas with cheese, beans or moist pork. Accented with thin salsa, these fluffy cakes are pure comfort. Platter pairings also offer jalapeño salad, enchiladas, tamales, or burritos. For an all-inclusive, the “Divine Dinner” cooks up a veritable Latino smorgasbord for two: crunchy Boquitas de la Casa (home-made tortilla chips) with sweet salsa, olives, and beans followed by burritos, enchiladas, and stuffed pupusas. Chilean house wines wash it all down. But also available are an array of exotic bar drinks and fruit juices. A little bubbly? Chug some golden Kolashampan, an exotic Salvadoran soda made from creamy Mamey fruit. Dinners finish sweet with Semita: a mellow pineapple cake baked in a gingery cookie crust laced with molasses. Thinking “Fiesta” for Friday or Saturday? Features include Chicken Chipotle Fired Enchiladas and Spicey Chipotle Taquitos. But since these are high-traffic days, be sure to reserve, especially on Saturday ... there’s live music!

In 1960s India, scandal erupts when young bride Mayura leaves her husband, complaining of his coarseness and lasciviousness. She returns to her family compound, the domain of the family patriarch, a retired judge who carved his domestic kingdom from a coconut grove. Uma Parameswaran shows the reader that she completely understands this milieu as she introduces the members of an extended Brahmin family, laying out their reactions in this fictional portrait of a vanished way of life.

Autumn, One Spring (Turnstone Press) Patti Grayson

Poor Autumn Greene. She returns to her Northern Ontario hometown to attend her sister’s wedding. Too bad she didn’t say she was coming, or that she wasn’t invited. Or that she hasn’t spoken to her sister in five years, ever since she slept with her sister’s first fiancé and got pregnant. And that’s just the first chapter. Patti Grayson provides a rollicking good time in this novel of one small town where everybody knows too much about everybody else, and where misunderstandings and good intentions combine to mess things up.

Bryan Ferry Olympia (Virgin) Bryan Ferry has it bad and that’s good for us. He’s looking for love on his latest CD, and with the cover shots of Kate Moss lolling about in diamonds and Dior, we know we’re in for a luxurious affair. Ferry croons and sighs about desire, lust and loss in songs replete with lushly complex textures. The sounds are dense - his gorgeous cover of Song to the Siren has no less than six guitarists including Dave Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Nile Rogers, and Jonny Greenwood - but always refined. Opening track You Can Dance lays down a groove both elegant and insistent, and that’s Ferry’s genius. After four decades in the business, the man is still rock’s troubadour of the grandeur of romance. Brad Mehldau and Anne Sofie Von Otter Love Songs (Naive) Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau is known not only for his renditions of standards and rock classics but also for his original compositions. Both are featured in this two-CD set. Following a previous collaboration with a singer from the world of opera (his disc of songs with Renee Fleming), the first disc features a song cycle written by Mehldau especially for the renowned mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. The second disc features some knockout renditions of works by the Beatles, Jacques Brel, Leonard Bernstein, Joni Mitchell and others in remarkably intimate performances. Opening track, “Avec le temps,” by songwriter Leo Ferre, is worth the whole set. Vesely Couture Tea & Crumpets Hometown rock and death metal veterans Eddie Vesely and Joel Couture find a very different new groove with their latest project, dubbed Vesely Couture, not surprisingly. The new disc takes us back to late ‘70s and early ‘80s, combining nostalgic-sounding synthesizers with live bass and drums. Julia Carr and Alyssa Graff drop by to provide some airy vocal help on four of the songs, while a saxophone solo from guest Miguel Berube swings along nicely on one track. A groovy time for all. A second disc from the duo is due later this year.

It’s lovely being Ann By Leigh Patterson Photography: Mike Sanders

Artist Ann Rallison fondly recalls an episode early on in her teaching career in England, when she had her students dip their hands in blue powdered paint to emulate blue gloves as part of their costumes for a school assembly – with disastrous results. After enduring a lecture from the principal, an evening of cleaning the gym and trying to remove blue paint from 37 white school uniform shirts, Rallison returned to school the next day expecting the worst, but instead found a note from the parents’ council: “You’re nuts… keep it up.” Jokingly describing this incident as her “Blue Period,” Rallison has been taking risks in her life and her art as long as she can remember. A self-described “navy brat,” Rallison’s family travelled extensively both in Britain and Europe and she has childhood memories of her teddy bear being regularly packed into the freezer part of the refrigerator for shipping to the next naval base. Many of her early sea-faring experiences have inspired her art, where shells, boats and even mermaids consistently have central roles. an embossed image, for example. A number of her latest works will be showcased in her upcoming show, aptly entitled “Mélange” at Gallery Lacosse in April.

With a view of life as a “daring adventure,” Rallison moved to Winnipeg over 20 years ago, and has been part of the city’s vibrant arts scene ever since. “For a city in the middle of bloody nowhere, the arts community in Winnipeg is fabulous; we have world class ballet, theatre, art and music,” she says. While she considers herself primarily a printmaker, Rallison is a versatile artist who also paints and experiments with photography and glass. She is currently exploring multimedia compositions, pairing paint with

“The show will be a mixture of the mediums I work in,” Rallison says, adding, “ideas are firing in my brain all the time.” Perhaps this is why Rallison found her true calling as an art teacher working in the Winnipeg School Division. “I love my job, I think that’s why I stay in Winnipeg,” she says. “There are challenges and laughs, and I enjoy each student’s enthusiasm and innocence in their enjoyment of art. This can come from something like a child discovering the simple magic of combining blue and yellow to make green.” This pure joy feeds Rallison’s own passion for exploring and learning. “I believe that to be a good learner, you have to figure out what you don’t know,” she says. She enjoys being inspired by other artists when working in the bowels of what she describes as “the best print shop in Canada”: the basement at MPA’s Martha Street Studio. “Sometimes you can come down here and be working alongside six or seven artists.”

Rallison confesses that while she is “an incredibly messy printmaker,” she believes that “the more mess you make, the more fun you must be having.” That was apparent to one of her young students, who once found Rallison covered in paint, sitting on the floor and surrounded by student artwork and supplies. “He asked me, ‘Is it lovely being you?’ And I thought to myself ‘yes it is.’ Isn’t it amazing that he noticed? Children can be such divergent thinkers.” Some of Rallison’s former students have gone on to achieve success as artists and playwrights, and in an interesting twist on art imitating life, one student in the U.K. has written a play with a central character based on Rallison and her no-holds-barred approach to art teaching. “I really enjoy creating art, and am thrilled when others enjoy my work too.” With her inspiration coming from the sea, nature and simply, “from living,” as reflected in her colourful prints, silk paintings and delicate etchings, it would appear that it’s lovely being Ann Rallison, indeed.

Many reasons to smile By Leigh Patterson Winnipeg orthodontist Dr. Bruce McFarlane believes it’s never too early or too late to help people achieve a great smile. And with so many types of corrective devices available to fit a variety of lifestyles and budgets, Dr. McFarlane and his friendly team can give patients something to really smile about. Parents can help ensure their kids enjoy a healthy, happy smile for life by being proactive about addressing oral health at a young age, McFarlane notes. “With children as young as seven we can spot odd growth patterns in their jaws and nip bad habits, like thumb sucking, in the bud,” he says. Since their teeth can be more easily manipulated, “it’s easier to correct teeth in children and teens, and it takes less time for the process,” he adds. With no referral required, parents can book a one-hour consultation with Dr. McFarlane to address all of their questions and concerns about their child’s teeth. It is also becoming increasing popular for adults to seek out orthodontics and finally get that million-dollar smile they have always wanted. “We have lots of innovative options to

help people recover their smile,” McFarlane says. Aligners or Incognito behind-the-teeth braces, for example, discretely straighten teeth without the “Ugly Betty” look.

Beyond straightening teeth, orthodontic care can set the foundation for a healthy life. “Science has shown that healthy teeth and gums can help prevent heart disease and diabetes,” McFarlane says. Well-fitting teeth can also help people deal more effectively with stress.

“A person’s smile contributes to their first impression and plays a huge role in their self esteem,” McFarlane says. “One of the neatest things about being an orthodontist is seeing the increased confidence in a patient when they leave our office after their braces come off, especially in teenagers. They are even walking taller.”

‘I need it’ vs. ‘I want it’ Tips from Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology* By Mathilda Waters

According to our expert on well-being, Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology, replacing one word with another word makes a world of difference. MW: I have a demanding and rather unhappy friend who always complains that her needs are not being met. What advice do you have for her? Dr. DD: Here’s an idea that might help your friend: any time she feels she needs something, she could tell herself, ‘I want it, but I don’t need it.’ MW: How does this make a difference? Dr. DD: To need something is to lack, to be incomplete, whereas to want is to desire what you can live without. If the world doesn’t grant your wish, you are still going to be fine. In other words, a fulfilled and motivated person might ‘want’ what someone feeling deprived and empty ‘needs.’ Changing just that one word can be quite empowering. MW: Can you give me an example? Dr. DD: Let’s say you feel sad and lonely. You can think, ‘I need someone to comfort me,’ and feel deprived until someone does comfort you. Or you can think, ‘I want someone to comfort me, but I don’t need anyone to comfort me, because I can handle my feelings of loneliness and sadness on my own.’ MW: I guess that would save you from disappointment. Dr. DD: Precisely. We always expect our needs to be met, and expectations lead to disappointments. Wanting something doesn’t mean expecting it. We all know you can’t always get what you want. MW: Is it fair then to say it’s healthy to cut down on your needs? Dr. DD: Absolutely. Cutting down on your needs has great rewards. The more needs you have, the more needs will be frustrated, and the more rejection, dissatisfaction, depravation, resentfulness and anger you are likely to experience. It’s easier to feel gratitude for receiving what you want but don’t expect, than for just getting your needs met. It’s the extras that make us happy. There is nothing extra about need fulfillment.

MW: Does your logic apply to all needs? Dr. DD: Of course there are legitimate needs, such as a need for clean air, healthy food, safe shelter, basic respect, care of those who can’t care for themselves (children, disabled), and so on. But we’d save ourselves a lot of disappointment if we stopped expanding our definition of needs to include luxury lifestyles and products, or too much support, understanding, and affection from others. MW: So you’re applying this logic to both physical and emotional needs? Dr. DD: Yes. Our consumerist culture teaches us that we need stuff to be happy. Our economy is 70% consumer spending, and it will collapse if we stop buying all this stuff we don’t need. People will buy anything if they think they need it. But if you examine your so-called ‘needs,’ you might realize that not only do you not need everything you buy, you don’t even want most of it, because it doesn’t advance your well-being. MW: How about love? Do we need to be loved? Dr. DD: Many people will say they need to be loved. And of course being in love is great, and it’s very human to desire to be loved. But if it is not happening, do yourself a favour and don’t use the language of needs regarding love, as it will likely make you feel like there is a black hole in the middle of your chest. I think it’s important to seek love, as it is one of the greatest things in life, but don’t start your quest from a position of deprivation. Focus on giving love, as you do have direct control over that. And if others love you as well, that’s just a great bonus.

Her clients agree. Since launching Little Luxuries, demand for her services has continued to grow. In response, the company has also grown, from a staff of one—Lisa herself—to up to eight fully trained and experienced employees. “Lisa’s staff is a reflection of herself; they are very professional, thorough and friendly,” says a client. “They take pride in what they do. My house looks wonderful when I come home; it’s sparkling clean every time.” Lisa selects her staff carefully, choosing people who share her passion for organization, consistency and attention to detail. Like her, these are women who are positive, hardworking and good communicators. Licensed, bonded and insured, the staff works in teams of three to five. “When you have the same people working together as long as they have, you have a team that can clean your home in a detailed and organized fashion in a reasonable period of time,” notes Lisa. “They get to know your home and its needs better than anyone.” She ensures her staff has all the tools to do every job properly, safely and efficiently. Little Luxuries uses environmentally-friendly Norwex cleaning products and high quality equipment. But most of all, what the team brings to each job is a sense of pride. “They’re more than staff, we’re family,” says Lisa. “The most rewarding thing for me is to see a group of women who enjoy coming together, taking charge of their lives by doing something they love.”

a PASSION for a job DONE RIGHT You can tell right away that Lisa Bertrand is a powerhouse of energy. There’s a fire in those jet coal eyes, a warm glow as she smiles. Her passion for her work comes through from the get-go. And her work is to get your home detailed. Not just neat and tidy, but spotless. That’s because Lisa is passionate about her business. “I believe that when you do something, it’s all or nothing,” she says. “It has to be done properly.” It’s a commitment that is at the heart of Little Luxuries, the company she founded three and half years ago. That dedication to hard work and professionalism comes from years of juggling three jobs. Eventually, after years of working in the medical field, she decided it was time to set her own course. A side job in the cleaning industry decided the direction. “I found that cleaning re-energized me,” recalls Lisa. “Because it was something I enjoyed, I became very good at it.”

Most of all, she wanted to have control over her own destiny. Her approach to life is all about growing and learning. “When you’re not satisfied with something in your life, you need to take control and make the changes to go after what gives you joy,” says Lisa. Along with that drive for self-determination was a firm belief that Little Luxuries had to be better than good. “I met Lisa from Little Luxuries in November 2008 after looking endlessly for a reputable company to clean my home,” writes a client on one of the website’s many testimonials. “Lisa is a very friendly, honest and professional business woman who I immediately liked and knew I could trust.” The company caters to discerning clients who want their homes cleaned the way they would do it—and better. “It’s like the difference between fast food and fine dining,” says Lisa. “In the home cleaning business, it pays to hire true professionals. At the end of the day, I can go home knowing my staff and I have given you the best cleaning service we can provide.”

The company has built an ever-growing list of loyal clients who rely on Little Luxuries to clean their homes weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, according to their particular needs. Little Luxuries caters to everything and anything, from detailing your home to special requests such as accompanying clients or their pets to appointments, house checks during vacations, tidying during wedding or retirement parties, and running errands. Clients know they can depend on Lisa to ensure everything runs smoothly. The owner of Little Luxuries is very present with her staff, applying her strong sense of organization and keen eye for detail. This natural talent is not without a touch of perfectionism, something the business-owner readily admits. It’s this all-or-nothing attitude that drives her to ensure a job is always done properly. The results have not gone unnoticed. “I am a very particular person when it comes to cleaning,” reveals one of her clients in a testimonial. “I love perfection, and that is what I have with Lisa and her staff at Little Luxuries.”

Blooming with fresh ideas By Leigh Patterson

From March 31st to April 3rd, all three floors of the Winnipeg Convention Centre will be transformed into a veritable Mecca for those looking to be inspired by the latest in design, décor and outdoor living. The 2011 Home Expressions Show has lured over 360 exhibitors locally and from across Canada bringing a bumper crop of fresh ideas for kitchen, bath, interior design, appliances, electronics, home furnishings, lifestyle products, green living and more to Manitoba’s doorstep - in one convenient location. “Home Expressions Show has really grown this year, with lots of new, diverse exhibitors,” says show manager Jan Currier. “We’ve got representatives from across the renovation

spectrum, including windows, doors, exteriors, roofs, plumbing and heating.” And, she adds, “there are pretty things to see as well.” Many of those “pretty things” will greet and revive winter-weary visitors as soon as they enter the show on the first floor. In keeping with this year’s focus on garden and outdoor living, the creative landscapers of St. Mary’s Nursery and Garden Centre Ltd. will be transforming a car into a floral masterpiece that will be the focal point of a larger, fun and whimsical display that will attract and delight kids of all ages. Sponsored by MTS, the always popular Garden Court on the third floor will be a 3,000-square-foot oasis of trees, shrubs, flowers, water features designed and built by staff of St. Mary’s Nursery and Garden Centre and Barkman Concrete. “The Garden Court tends to be a natural meeting place for people attending the show,” says Currier. No wonder – it’s a treat for the senses, a place to rest and enjoy the surroundings. Bursting with popular plants and the latest design themes in landscaping and stunning hardscaping, it’s also a place to get excited about the upcoming gardening season. Throughout the weekend, the Portage Cartage/ Storage Lifestyle Stage on the second floor will feature outdoor-themed speakers, demonstrations and more that will be sure to inspire visitors planning an outdoor retreat. Easyrock is a synthetic but extremely authentic-looking rock face. It can be used indoors or outdoors and is applied much the same way as siding. Panels are joined with a lap indent making portions seamless in appearance. It is lightweight, each panel weighing only two and half pounds, and requires only eight screws a piece to fasten to walls. Easyrock comes in a wide variety of colours and styles. Recently Easyrock has taken steps to improve its already exceptional product – it is now what is called a second generation panel - meaning a new hard coat has been applied to all Easyrock panels making them ultra-durable. “These panels are so strong, you can take a hammer to them and they won’t crack or chip. Real stone can’t stand up to that,” says Jehle, adding that the panels are also extremely fade resistant. Easyrock has been a steady winner with homeowners and cottagers. Now it is gaining in popularity with architects, contractors and developers who are opting for a beautiful product they can work with anytime of year. “We’ve seen a huge increase in use for condo development projects and rec rooms,” says Jehle, noting that Easyrock is readily available, easy to apply, and that contractors/developers don’t have to wait on

skilled masons to finish a project (as with culture stone, which can only be applied in summer months). Star Package Sales has now added Easyrock to their line of RTM (Ready To Move homes) siding materials. Easyrock is featured on display in their new showroom located on Lagimodiere at Springfield. Most recently, Gen-u-wine Cellars, a company specializing in custom made wine cellars, used Easyrock at a Las Vegas Trade Show. Its lightweight and realistic look made it very easy to ship, work with, and display professionally. “The look was extremely authentic and the product very easy to install,” notes Rob Denomme, CEO of Genuwine Cellars. “We have wine cellars for all styles and budgets, and Easyrock is an ideal product for our customers.” Jehle and the staff at Fort Distributors invite everyone to visit their offices, see the product firsthand, and if need be, receive ‘Easyrock training’ to ensure a successful do-it-yourself project. With a full time carpenter on staff, customers can get an explanation and demonstration right on the spot. “Our product is available, in stock and ready to go home with you. You can be working on your project the same day,” says Jehle. Fort Distributors Ltd is located just North of the Perimeter at 938 McPhillips Road in St Andrews, MB. (Visit www.fortdistributors.com or call (204) 785-2180 for more information). Showrooms with product displays are conveniently located in Winnipeg at Durabilt Windows & Doors Design Centre, Unit 2 – 1600 Regent Ave, and Kesay Design Centre, 693 Taylor Ave. Easyrock can also be viewed at the Star location on Lagimodiere & Springfield.

Krevco Turns 30 Since the 1980s, Manitobans who just ‘gotta have it’ have turned to Krevco for the leading edge in home lifestyle products. In fact, so good had been the company’s reputation that when Winnipeg businessman Don Carson went looking to expand his commercial portfolio five years ago, he bought the whole company in a move that ushered in a period of growth for the well-known retail chain. “Krevco’s history is a huge source of pride for all of us. We were able to build on this with new ownership back in 2006, and create fresh energy and bring in new products that hadn’t been seen here before,” says Krevco President Don Carson. Indeed, not only is Krevco the leader in pools, hot tubs and patio furniture, but with the acquisition of Embers, they are now a one-stop shop for any kind of flame and hearth product you care to imagine. According to Carson, recent consumer developments have meant they have to bring their ‘A’ game to the market every day. “The Internet has brought real change in that people have done their research before they come in, or make contact and know what they want. We have to have good sales people that know their products and the industry trends if we want to maintain the respect of the buying public,”

he says, pointing to people like Kerry Johnson, a guy who wrote the book on fireplaces and BBQs for the unique Manitoba market.

people with two BBQs on the deck – one for charcoal and another gas or electric model for quick cooking options.”

Now Krevco is broadening its scope becoming Western Canada’s lifestyle store with operations in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Thunder Bay. This is in concert with the group’s five local retail locations that include Winnipeg, Kenora and Brandon.

New as well at Krevco is the Gotta Have Club, a loyalty program that works alongside Air Miles Reward Miles to enhance value and drive sales in everything from hot tubs to water care products to fireplaces. “There is no cost to join online and the benefits are substantial. It’s a great add-on,” says Carson.

“Following the acquisition of Embers, we have been working to incorporate it into the Krevco Lifestyles package. Now we are fully ready to provide a very wide range of contemporary flame related products at all our outlets,” says Carson. GM of the Embers division, Kerry Johnson notes that back in 1993 they had just four fireplace models. “Now we have over 300,” he says. “Our product selection changes constantly and we seek out only the best manufacturers. For instance, we have just introduced a new line of BBQ from Australia (Beefeater) that includes a pizza oven, something that should prove very popular during this year’s grilling season,” he says, noting that people are a lot more serious about outdoor cooking than they had been in the past. “We are seeing more

Further, Don comments that altogether Krevco is so much more than just a pool and spa store. “We are experts in creating comfortable exciting indoor and outdoor lifestyle options that include such items as pools, hot tubs, gazebos, patio furniture and BBQs, to fireplaces, games room products, fitness equipment, bathroom plumbing, saunas and everything in between. We strive to be best in class by staying away from the ‘me too’ product assortment that everyone sees on the Internet shopping sites and in some of the big box stores. We are local and offer the kind of expertise that makes sense for our customers. At Krevco, we are focused on the best products and service, which has made us number one with Manitoba families and individuals for the past 30 years.”

Adding stone to your home is a great investment. Whether traditional or modern, large or small, a new construction or a remodel, manufactured stone veneer can easily be applied on virtually any sound surface. Now more than ever, homeowners are finding creative uses for stone with wine walls, kitchens, fireplaces, entertainment areas, or simply adding flair to an ordinary wall.

Choosing the Right Stone for Your Home

With all the options out there, choosing the right stone can feel like a daunting task. Murray Alston, Regional Sales Manager for Manitoba and Saskatchewan at I-XL Masonry Supplies, finds that the single biggest factor homebuilders look for when choosing a manufacturer for their stone veneer is believability and quality. Eldorado Stone, the world’s number one stone manufacturer, is his top choice for this reason. “With hand crafted moulds and colour palettes that capture all the nuances of natural stone, Eldorado Stone is truly the most believable architectural stone veneer in the world. The warm and rich colours create a unique feel and a sense of permanence and beauty in any home,” says Alston. Backed with a 50-year warranty, Eldorado Stone is also guaranteed to keep that look year after year. Sue Andre, the residential sales representative for Winnipeg at I-XL, adds that it is also important to dedicate the time to finding the right stone colour and profile. “Brochures

and the Internet are wonderful resources for finding inspiration and getting familiar with the different styles and possibilities. Just don’t use photos to make your final decision!” She adds, “Cameras, inks, and computer screens all distort the colour and don’t always give you a feel for the stone’s texture and depth. We always encourage our customers to visit our

showroom and bring home samples of their top choices to see how it will look in their home and in the various lights at different times throughout the day.” For more information, visit I-XL at www. ixlmasonry.com or stop by the showroom.

“If accidentally distorted they’ll return to their original shape within minutes,” notes Comte. “If cut or damaged, they can be replaced easily and inexpensively.” The panels are uniquely designed and customsized to fit existing openings without costly reframing. Available in clear, bronze and gray tints, they reduce glare and solar heat gain while complementing any style of home with clean lines and pleasing proportions. This three-season room also features Vista Aluminum Railings. An ideal, economical alternative to wood or iron, they come in a variety of styles—colonial, glass, picket, etc.

A Higher Level Weatherwall Patio Panels combine comfort with outstanding visibility in this stunning sunroom, created by Canadian Deck Company. Attractive and durable, the powdercoated aluminum frames hold both mesh screens and vinyl-glazed panels for a panoramic view. The lightweight Weatherwall Sliding Panels can be raised or lowered effortlessly to open 75 percent of the window area. Or they

can be easily removed and stored, leaving only the screens in place.

“Our local architectural and builder community knows these railings are not only stylish but are built to withstand our climactic conditions,” says Comte, adding that Canadian Deck is a representative for Vista. “Most visitors to our home show booths are surprised that Vista style doesn’t come with an out of reach price tag.”

“You can let in the breeze while screening out insects,” says Marc Comte of Canadian Deck Company. When closed, the strong 10 mm vinyl-glazed panels provide protection from wind and snow. spring 2011 | STYLE MANITOBA | 57

Helping make your home a castle By Leigh Patterson After a decade of research and development, and five more years of extensive market testing, barkman has added beautiful stone veneers to its extensive precast concrete product line. Now, Manitoba homeowners have an easy and affordable way to make their homes into their castles, inside and out. The early response and uptake to the recently introduced stone veneers has been “overwhelming,” says Tim Fast, barkman’s Product Consultant for manufactured stone veneers. “It’s been unbelievable. People are loving it for many reasons – aesthetics, ease of use, durability, choice of patterns and colours, and the fact that it is a local product.” Developed for both indoor and outdoor applications, barkman’s stone veneers are moulded from real quarried stone to achieve an

58 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2011

authentic look. Portland cement, iron oxide pigments and lightweight aggregates are mixed and poured into the moulds to create 10 unique stone profiles. Each profile contains up to 11 different colour choices. “The pigment is an integral part of the concrete, added during the manufacturing process, and then each stone is hand painted to enhance the base colour,” Fast notes. “Since there are 75 to 120 different moulds within each of the 10 profiles, we are able to achieve a one-of-a-kind look.” Whether the goal is to improve your home’s curb appeal with elegant “Castle Rock,” enhance your cottage with the appeal of the fieldstone look, or update your garden wall, renovating a façade with the appearance of real stone has never been easier or more budget-friendly.

The stone veneers can be applied over almost any surface and since they are more lightweight compared to natural stone, they don’t require footings. Because they have been tested under harsh conditions for durability, are relatively easy to use and significantly inexpensive to install, stone veneers are “better for the homeowner, the homebuilder and the mason,” Fast says. Given a little time and information, stone veneers are also ideal for the experienced do-it-yourselfer. Stone veneers have an aesthetic appeal that makes them popular for indoor applications, too. They can be used to transform an existing wall into a distinctive textured feature wall or warm up the area surrounding a fireplace. Choosing stone veneers from barkman comes with the peace of mind in knowing that help

also carries a full line of natural stone thin veneer. Manufactured out of the quarries of India, “Pangaea natural stone thin veneers are a great complement to the barkman line of veneers for those customers who want even more options,” Fast notes. Visitors to barkman’s showroom can browse the various precast and natural stone veneer options and review their renovation plans over coffee with an experienced advisor. A barkman landscape architect can also advise homeowners on using stone veneers in their yards as an affordable and attractive way to customize an existing garden wall, to create panels for privacy or as functional backdrops for outdoor entertaining. The company will be showcasing its exciting new stone veneers as well as other products at its booth next to the Garden Court at the upcoming 2011 Home Expressions Show. With many Manitobans gearing up to tackle home renovation projects this year, barkman’s line of stone veneers are a timeless versatile option - offering loads of inspiration with a beauty that’s more than skin deep.

is just a phone call away to a local company with a rock solid reputation in precast concrete since 1948. “Because we are a local manufacturer, lead times can be up to four to six weeks earlier than if the product was sourced elsewhere,” Fast says. “We can also address changes on the fly because we are in direct communication with the production line.” By listening and being responsive to customer input, barkman has already added more colour options to its stone veneer line. Fast adds that barkman expects to add more patterns and colour options in future as expected interest in the product grows. Always looking to bring affordable options to the market and to bring choice to the customer, barkman

Clear Directions By Kelly Gray Manitobans have some of the toughest weather conditions on planet Earth. When it comes to helping us maintain our clear view on the outside world, home renovators and homebuilders have turned to a winning slate of window manufacturers for energy efficient products that are built strong to meet the challenges of our northern prairie environment and look good in the process. Creating an ‘E’ vantage “Energy efficiency (EE) has become the top priority for homeowners. It’s a reflection of how homes have changed with more efficient furnaces, solar heated water, geothermal options, and of course, windows all working to reduce fuel consumption and make properties more comfortable,” says Lauren Sabeski,

Provincial Sales Manager for JELD-WEN in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northern Ontario. He reports that JELD-WEN windows and doors are now certified by Energy Star, a voluntary program hosted by the Federal Government through Natural Resources Canada that establishes benchmarks for energy performance on items such as refrigerators and computers, as well as building products. Last year JELD-WEN received the Energy Star ‘Sustained Excellence Award,’ and in 2009 they took home the ‘Participant of the Year’ award, distinctions they view with tremendous pride. “We even have a Government Relations Manager who focuses on our linkages with groups such as Energy Star. For us, having the backing of independent authorities is an important consideration that helps us earn the respect and trust of the public,” says Sabeski, noting that the Energy Star logo on their window products gives consumers the confidence to make an informed buying decision. In fact, choosing a product that bears the Energy Star logo could mean a saving of 12 percent in home fuel costs.

JELD-WEN offers all wood, wood with an aluminum cladding, and vinyl window products made to meet the challenges of virtually any home design. According to Sabeski, Manitobans are particularly interested in triple pane windows, a product that is especially appropriate for the province’s extreme environment where winter temperatures can fall below minus 40 C and hit plus 40 C in the summer. “We make our windows here in Winnipeg for the rigours of the northern prairie environment. Our capability allows us to be dedicated to creating products that work here. “And if a window works in this setting, it will perform well anywhere. Manitoba has to be one of the harshest testing grounds of any area on Earth.” According to Sabeski, aspects such as their unique Edgetech spacer technology is behind the energy efficacy of JELD-WEN’s window offering. Edgetech Super Spacer creates a full seal of protection between each pane of glass, ensuring more efficient heating and cooling throughout the seasons.

“Super Spacer’s no-metal formula provides incredible thermal protection and reduced insulation,” he says, adding that windows are looking good as well with a new assortment of colours available on vinyl product.

Keeping Up Appearances While windows must meet the challenges of energy efficiency to be relevant in the current market, they must also be durable and offer great appearance to make the grade in the eyes of consumers. Towards this end, manufacturers have been stepping up to provide larger colour palettes and exciting cladding options to meet the need. At All Weather Windows, Canada’s largest independently owned window manufacturer and recipient of Energy Star’s Manufacturer of the Year award for 2010, they are rolling out Apex Alloy 9900 products this spring. “This is the future of vinyl windows,” says All Weather Windows Sales Manager Sean Phillips. “Apex represents a drive to new technology that is a major shift upwards in both durability and appearance.”

With the Apex Alloy 9900, All Weather is using a revolutionary V-Weld technology that virtually eliminates air and water leaks. “The Apex Alloy 9900 combines an energy efficient, high performance PVC frame with the strength of aluminum cladding to create a unique window that also offers bold styling and colour choices,” says Phillips, adding that Apex uses a triple weather stripping system, warm edge spacer and fusion welded multiple chamber frame to deliver high EE marks. “The product also offers powder coating on the metal cladding to create a window that is highly weather resistant and extremely durable. These windows also offer an appearance that was previously only available to those who went with a commercial grade product.” As well, All Weather now has windows that feature a premium wood grain powder coat that is available in both metal clad PVC and metal clad wood. These products deliver the exterior look of all wood windows with the durability of metal cladding and the great price point of PVC, and they do it in six new colour-grain options.

“At All Weather we are committed to good engineering. We will never bring a product to market unless it is the result of a lot of research and development. For us there has to be a good reason to make a new product introduction. Apex Alloy 9900 is a perfect case in point,” he says. As All Weather begins to introduce Apex to the market, they invite members of the building trades to stop by their new showroom on Terracon Place in Winnipeg to view the innovations in this new product line. Details about this exciting new product will also be available this spring at All Weather’s local dealers.

The Custom Touch Yarrow Sash & Door is one of Winnipeg’s oldest window manufacturers with a history that goes back more than 60 years. features that may look great, but don’t offer the kind of energy efficiency necessary in today’s market,” says, Michael Neufeld, President of Yarrow Sash & Door. “We can make products that integrate these features with high performance glass allowing homes and businesses to not lose the traditional elements but score with the latest technology.” Yarrow also represents Marvin Windows, a leading US manufacturer that is on the cutting edge of design and engineering. For example, new is a metal clad venting picture window that allows homeowners to open these large windows but still have a completely unobstructed view. “We also offer what Marvin has named the ‘Ultimate Casement Window’ that is larger than virtually anything else on the market with sizes that go up to 40 inches in width and 96 inches in height. The heavy-duty hardware also allows for triple panes, something that other manufactures shouldn’t do because of the weight. Further, these windows come with an easy clean capability because they swing 140 degrees to make it a simple task to clean the exterior from inside the home,” he says, concluding that by just listening to customers and understanding the needs of the market, manufacturers have been able to really raise the level of window effectiveness as well as adding to a home’s appearance. A Friend in the Neighbourhood The all-inclusive lifestyle is a lot closer for Winnipeg seniors who opt for assisted living at one of Homestead Manitoba’s properties. In fact, residents of Dakota House, Kildonan House, Sterling House or Devonshire House are finding that they don’t even have to move from their old neighbourhoods to enjoy the freedom and independence of total service living. According to Homestead’s marketing director Rya Janzen, the group of facilities is targeted to community and relationships. “Everything is very personalized. We know the families and the residents so we can be fully up to speed on situations such as health concerns or personal interests. Our goal is to make these residences all about the people that live here. We see ourselves as facilitators who work to make life a bit easier through services such as housekeeping and food service.” With four sites in Winnipeg and another on the way in Morden, chances are that Homestead Manitoba offers a location near a family’s old community. Consider Devonshire House in Transcona. This facility offers three buildings with two (one is due to open shortly) available for assisted living, and Kildonan Green Apartments, a new 99-suite facility for 55+ seniors who seek a suite only option. “The Phase I building that opened in 2009 is full with a waiting list,” reports Janzen,

remarking that they have found a large market in Transcona amongst people who don’t want to move from the community and are thankful there is a facility like this in their old stomping grounds. As well, people are excited about the ample suites. For example, Devonshire House offers apartments that range in size from 700-square feet in a one-bedroom configuration to 960-square feet in the larger two-bedroom model. The Kildonan Green 55+ apartments have units that range from 1132-square feet in suites that feature all new appliances, in-suite laundry and all utilities included. There is even a storage area on-floor. Devonshire House delivers a complete meal plan where resident’s dietary concerns are part of the personalized touch. Says Janzen, “Everything is scratch made. This means if you have gluten issues, there are special breads we can bake. Our cooks are also skilled at preparing meals that are low in sodium or are healthy for diabetics or people with allergies. Further, you won’t find a deep fryer on site at any of our kitchens where heart health is taken very seriously. We strive to accommodate all and any dietary request, and do so in such a way that the food is always tasty.” Other amenities include things such as on-site banking with Steinbach Credit Union, exercise classes, and a beauty salon, as well

By Kelly Gray

as entertainment planned on a monthly basis. “Our staff even shovels your car out of the lot and makes sure the sidewalks are ice free.” The new facilities at Devonshire House represent a trend towards flexible options. According to Janzen, people can locate themselves into a 55+ apartment until such time that they find they may require a little help with the day-to-day chores like cooking and cleaning. “Then we can offer a suite in one of the assisted living properties,” she says, adding that residents can maintain their independence and are not committed to a long-term rental agreement or life lease. “We want to make things easy and uncomplicated. We know that sometimes seniors have to move out on short notice because of health related concerns. We have set it up so there is no big worry about vacating the apartment and this has proven to be highly popular with seniors who can just pay a modest fee each month to have everything taken care of.” “Here it’s all about making a change to a simpler lifestyle that is homey and welcoming in a setting in which a sense of community is encouraged. We want aging Winnipeggers to know that when they are ready for a change, we are ready with a full service residential solution that, given our numerous locations, is likely in the old neighbourhood.” spring 2011 | STYLE MANITOBA | 67

Easy Living Moves South The town of Morden is well known as a small community with a lot to offer, from championship golf to shopping and entertainment options to health care. Now the centre’s considerable portfolio of services is about to get a significant upgrade with the development of a new assisted living community – Homestead South. Shovels are expected to turn soil this April when plans for the 83-unit seniors’ facility get underway. “We are looking at spring of 2012 for an opening,” says Cheryl Digby, Community Development Officer with the town of Morden, a growing community that has experienced 17 percent population gains in the last five years. What she describes is a development that caters to the needs of the 55+ seniors’ market with a lifestyle option that includes meals as well as housekeeping in a tastefully designed complex that also offers an exercise room, entertainment centre and common areas. Apartments range in size from 700 square feet to nearly 1000 square feet in a two-bedroom unit. As well, the assisted living centre will be sited alongside a supportive care home in a move designed to ease transitions for elderly residents. “Homestead South will offer independent living for seniors who seek a little extra help for those day-to-day chores like cooking and cleaning. Once the independent living becomes more difficult, residents can just move over to the adjacent centre where 24 hour nursing care is available.” According to Digby, the new centre is part of a concerted development plan that includes a new shopping mall at La Verendrye and Loren Drive. “With all our recent growth, we have found ourselves ‘under-retailed’ and are in the process of creating a new shopping centre and have hopes Homestead South will act as a catalyst to spur building in the area,” she says, noting that they are actively seeking new grocery and auto dealerships to anchor the site.

Digby remarks that all the activity is creating considerable excitement in Morden. She sees the new Homestead South facility as a continuation of the remarkable growth the town has experienced over the past decade. “We already have a life lease facility for seniors, but Homestead South represents a move that offers greater flexibility for residents,” she says, adding that with 83 units to fill, the new project will certainly help continue the drive to Morden’s positive growth. “There is certainly nothing like it in the community now, and when it’s complete, it will be yet another good reason to consider a move to the slower pace of southern Manitoba.”

Stone Ridge Meadows Imagine living next to a lake, watching the breeze ripple the water from the deck of your brand new home in Stone Ridge Meadows in Stonewall. Developed by Genstar, Stone Ridge Meadows is located just off 12th Street West, adjacent to an existing upscale development in the northwest corner of Stonewall, and within walking distance of the town’s premiere attraction, Quarry Park. “Compared to what you would receive for the same price in the city, the lake lots in Stone Ridge Meadows are a fantastic value. These are high amenity lots, and at 75 feet in width, that gives you a lot of room to build on with plenty of room left over to play,” says Dave Boles, development manager with Genstar. “Stonewall is so close to the city that it’s a fast and easy commute to get to work.” Landscaping and amenities are complete in Phase One, which consists of 50 lots that already have full underground services including sewer, water, gas and hydro. The development will see a total of 143 lots, which range in size from 60 to 75 feet in width, and

125 to 150 feet in depth. Prices for the lots are affordable with many selling for under $85,000, and lake lots beginning at just $107,000. The character of Stone Ridge Meadows has been designed to complement the surrounding community. The 12th Street West entrance provides majestic evidence of Mother Nature’s handiwork demonstrated in the existing wooded area entrance leading to two ponds, further reflecting the priorities of conservation and preservation. The ponds, located on the west side of the development, will serve a functional purpose as an internal storm water system for the Meadows, while also picking up drainage from the rear lots on Montgomery Avenue and Procure Drive to the south. The shorelines will be visible for both pedestrians and motorists to enjoy, and will create a rolling landscape with a mix of grassy areas and rock edges. Plants such as Black-eyed Susans, Prairie Switch Grass and Bottlebrush Sedge will dot the shoreline.

The lot price isn’t the only selling feature for Stone Ridge Meadows. Most lots in the development back onto either green space or the lake, and homes will be situated to conserve as many of the mature trees as possible. In addition, a pathway winds through the neighbourhood, and will be great for walking, biking and other activities. A number of well-known homebuilders have showhomes ready for this spring’s Parade of Homes – A&S Homes, Discovery Homes, Warkentin Custom Homes and Hilton Homes – all of which have reputations for quality and professionalism. Kensington Homes has recently joined the builder group in Stone Ridge Meadows and will have a showhome ready for the Fall 2011 Parade of Homes. “Lot sales are moving quickly,” says Boles. “The builders have an inventory of lots, so I would suggest contacting them as soon as possible. This is a great community to live in, with easy access to schools and other amenities in Stonewall.” For more information on Stone Ridge Meadows, visit Genstar’s website online at: www.genstar.com

With its superbly finished built-in features and carefully planned layout, the 2395-square-foot Discovery showhome at 24 Stone Ridge combines a timeless design with outstanding quality. The builder used a blend of today’s finest natural materials to create a country appeal that reflects the setting of Stone Ridge Meadows with its ponds, grasslands and wooded areas. In fact, there are ponds both on the right and the rear of the house as well as across the street. The showhome takes full advantage of these views with large windows and a wraparound porch. “From every window you can see the water,” notes Joshua Rist, general manager at Discovery Homes.

A tranquil tone runs through the home, both inside and out. Discovery Homes brought the calm rich colour of the exterior’s James Hardie siding indoors, as seen here in the kitchen

and dining room. The subway backsplash and granite countertops complement the walls and cabinetry. The two-tiered island is ingeniously located to allow for the easy transfer from the kitchen while maintaining the dining room as a separate space. Decorative glazed storage creates a perfect transition to the great room. Currently for sale, this Gold Award winner in the Fall 2010 Parade is one of two Discovery showhomes entered this spring, the other located at 172 Bridgeland Drive South in Bridgwater Forest.

Building, a Family Business When viewing the Warkentin display home in Stone Ridge Meadows, visitors should know that the fine finishing details, quality workmanship and superb functionality are the same as in every home Warkentin builds. That kind of consistency comes with the close on-site supervision and one-on-one consultation at the heart of this family-run business. “This attention to detail is something that runs through the whole process,” says Melanie Snow, “from the first moment we meet, through the interior design consultations to after we’ve handed over the keys.” Snow’s father Walter Warkentin started the company 30 years ago, and since then, Warkentin Custom Homes has built a stellar reputation in Winnipeg, Stonewall and the surrounding areas. “Because we build custom homes, we can design a house where every detail meets your family’s specific needs,” explains Snow.

Warkentin Homes provides the services of an interior designer to help give the prospective homeowners ideas, direction and guidance in putting together all the elements in their home. Display homes are a wonderful opportunity to show possibilities that those thinking of building a home may not have considered. Here at 46 Rossmere Crescent, Warkentin demonstrates how the use of vinyl shakes,

acrylic stucco and cultured stone can create a beautiful, maintenance-free exterior. The showhome will be available for viewing throughout the Spring Parade.

The pleasure of a small town meets city convenience in Kildonan Green, a community in well-established west Transcona. Developed by Genstar, Kildonan Green is located on Plessis Road, north of Regent Avenue West, and features a combination of single-family homes, town home condominiums, attached homes and seniors independent living apartments and condominiums. Lots are selling quickly in the current 3rd phase of the development and builders are nearly out of inventory. Genstar recently released lots in the 4th and final phase of Kildonan Green, which includes spectacular 44 to 50 foot wide lots facing the centrally located six-acre park.

“There is truly a lot going on in this very nice, very family-friendly community,” notes Boles.

apartment buildings featuring different levels of care for seniors based on need.

“The park will be a really nice focal area for the community and the homes on the lots facing the park will be a showcase for the neighbourhood. Act fast because these premium park lots won’t last long,” says Dave Boles, development manager with Genstar, adding the community also will have a neighbourhood-scale shopping area, including a food store and various shops to help create a tight-knit, hometown feeling, while putting shopping within easy reach of the residents.

Other features of Kildonan Green include a number of smaller lots on Kildonan Meadow Drive for those looking for a lot within their budget, with homes built by Qualico. Randall Homes is also building the second phase of a four-plex townhouse condominium project on Tommy Douglas Drive.

In keeping with Kildonan Green’s intimate feel, only 400 lots will be available. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to build a new house in an established Winnipeg community. Contact participating builders Qualico Homes, Randall Homes, A & S Homes, Kensington Homes, Ventura Homes and Hilton Homes for lot availability information.

Amber Trails

The trail system is what sets Amber Trails apart from other communities. The paved and landscaped trails that meander throughout the community and connect the lakes and parks for enjoyable strolls will be continued in Phase 11 and 12.

Located in northwest Winnipeg, Amber Trails is one of Manitoba’s most desirable, family-friendly communities. Developed by Genstar, Amber Trails boasts nearly 40 acres of landscaped parks and paved walkways, three large lakes, playgrounds, a brand new school, transit access and is close to shopping, recreation facilities and Seven Oaks Hospital. This community has had great success in the past, and Genstar is currently in the midst of Phase 11 and plans to service Phase 12 this year.

Devonshire House is an assisted living complex in the neighbourhood, which consists of three

Residents live within walking distance to abundant shopping, restaurants, a hospital and more. A new school site has been set aside in Phase 12 for an elementary school expected to be built there at some time in the future.

For more information on Kildonan Green, visit Genstar’s website online at: www.genstar.com Many of the lots in Phase 12 will back onto the 10-acre future school site and green space. There are four current showhomes ready for the Spring Parade in Amber Trails, including designs by Silverton Homes, Qualico Homes, Randall Homes and Ventura Custom Homes on Amber Trail. A&S Homes has joined the Amber Trails builder group for Phase 11 and will have a showhome ready for the Fall 2011 Parade of Homes. For more information on Amber Trails, visit Genstar’s website online at: www.genstar.com

“Phase 11 almost sold out before we had completed servicing,” says Dave Boles, development manager with Genstar. “The homebuilders are still carrying some inventory, but there is very little remaining and it will go quickly.” Phase 11 features 107 single-family lots and three multi-family parcels earmarked for higher-end rental apartments. The first leg of Templeton Avenue was upgraded from a gravel road to a concrete surface last year. This year Genstar will be doing the same on Pipeline Road north to Templeton Avenue, providing ease of access to Leila Avenue and area shopping and amenities.

Leading Attraction By Kelly Gray Big things continue to happen in the southwest sector of Winnipeg. Certainly, the most sought after residential location in the city, the southwest is home to Bridgwater Forest, a well-conceived development that has become the fastest growing new community in Winnipeg. In fact, Bridgwater Forest saw 264 construction permits issued last year (up from 150 in 2009), making it the top site in terms of permits issued two years running. “We had a tremendous 2010,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Director of Land Development with Manitoba Housing, the group behind Bridgwater. He suggests that behind the attraction lies Bridgwater Forest’s premium location, its stock of well designed home plans, and large tract of natural open space. As mentioned, sales have been brisk. Indeed, Phase I and its 54 geothermal lots are largely sold out with just a few left. The same is true for Phase II, Phase III, and Phase IV, where less than four per cent of lots are still available. Further, Rewniak reports that this year they will launch Bridgwater Lakes, an adjacent neighbourhood that will offer close to 1150 lots when built out over several years. Part of what makes this area so interesting is the fact

that approximately half of the homes planned for Bridgwater Lakes will be what the housing industry calls visitable. “These homes will be easy to access for families with strollers or persons who use walkers or wheelchairs, and have features like no front steps, wider doorways and hallways, and accessible main floor washrooms,” says Rewniak, reporting that the first draw for lots in this neighbourhood will occur this spring with a total of 400 lots being made available to Bridgwater designated builders, all of which comprise a Who’s Who of Manitoba new home builders. Another aspect that makes the Bridgwater development so exciting is its mixed-use concept. While there is a wealth of singlefamily properties in the community, Manitoba Housing has also slated land for multi-family dwellings and commercial use. For example, Streetside Development is creating 85 two and three-bedroom townhouses on Bridgland Drive South with the first possessions occurring this March. Here Rewniak reports that they are also looking at offering three additional multifamily parcels in Phase III this spring. “When we are done there will be four neighbourhoods with a town centre in the middle. The centre will house 1000 residential units as well as commercial operations like grocery stores or other services. We are awaiting the finishing touches to Kenaston before this really gets underway,” he says, noting that they expect town centre development to finish up within the next 15 years or so.

“A quarter of the 375 acres in Bridgwater Forest is dedicated to natural open space like forests, parks and lakes. In fact, the forest alone encompasses 25 acres with walkways that deliver a deep-in-nature feel. So encompassing is the treed area that one might think they were at Bird’s Hill Park rather than in the midst of a major urban setting,” says Rewniak, adding that they built in much of the basic infrastructure like the several kilometers of sidewalks that course the roadways, an extensive network of pathways and some of the four lakes in Bridgwater. “This gives the neighbourhood a more mature aspect than most new home communities,” he says. Overall this southwest sector development is all part of Manitoba Housing’s integrated plans and social commitment that include taking proceeds from lot sales from Bridgwater Forest and nearby Royalwood to assist in revitalizing Winnipeg’s aging core area. To date, these proceeds have contributed $4.3 million in funding to inner city projects such as the University of Winnipeg’s McFeetors Hall student residence, The Edge housing development on Princess Street, and the Avenue Building on Portage where developers intend to create residential condos. Rewniak expects the excitement to continue as they work to complete the project over the next 15 to 20 years. “From the beginning we could see that the Bridgwater development was innovative in the Winnipeg market for so many reasons. It’s gratifying that after all the work and planning, Winnipeggers have recognized the value in the community and made us the most popular new home destination in the city.”

Innovative Ideas Recognized as an innovative leader in the new home building industry, Artista Homes has made a commitment to bringing forth new ideas and concepts in every one of its showhomes. Visitors to their display homes agree that every year Artista Homes manages to push the creative envelope a little further, bringing the unimaginable to life. Rest assured, this is not only for the benefit of the Parade. The team at Artista Homes believes it’s their duty to expose their clients to all of the possibilities available when building their home. How can prospective homeowners know that a certain feature, material or technology might better meet their needs if they are never exposed to new concepts and ideas?

Cotroneo, his four sons reaped the benefit of their father’s 60 years of experience in the industry. Today, Frank, Tony, Enzo and Gino each fulfill a different role at Artista Homes. At the same time, this is no experiment. Artista Homes has made it a mission to revolutionize Manitoba’s housing industry by combining innovative ideas and cutting edge designs with quality craftsmanship and proven building techniques and technology.

“Once a client decides they want a cutting edge design from Artista, we can go through an idea book and look at the different possibilities,” says Cotroneo. “We can use one of our designs as a starting point or we can sit down with our design team to create a plan that is entirely new.”

The Bungalow is Back As the demand for bungalows continues to increase, Gino’s Homes is using this Spring Parade as an opportunity to showcase the one-storey home. With six of their display homes in this category, it’s easy to see how the builder’s outstanding design capabilities have taken the bungalow further than ever. The showhome at 15 Hunterbrook Road in Phase 3 of Bridgwater Forest is a case in point. Right from the spacious foyer, it’s clear that Gino’s Homes has maximized the full potential of this bungalow’s design. Stairs are located immediately to the left of the foyer next to a bank of large windows that allow light to flood the dining room, separated from the kitchen by a wall. A nine-foot island with slide-in range and stainless steel hood fan is the focal point of the superbly finished kitchen. The maple cabinets feature a custom grey stain offset by a stunning glass tile backsplash. A wide plank ¾ inch maple hardwood flows into the great room. Balancing easy accessibility with a sense of privacy, both the bedroom area and the great room also feature the distinctive finishing details for which Gino’s Homes is renowned. While the 12-foot height creates additional volume, the open beam detail of the ceiling defines the space. Ingeniously placed above the fireplace, a large window contributes to the bright airy feeling. A sense of spaciousness is just as prevalent in all three bedrooms including the master with its generous ensuite. Again, the finishes are superb. The oversized shower is completely clad in ceramic tile as is the corner jetted tub. One of many windows throughout the homes looks out onto the lakeside property.

This abundance of large windows continues into the walkout lower level with its ample recreation and entertainment area, complete with a full bar, including wine fridge, sink and granite countertops. “A 2000 square-foot bungalow translates into just under 4000 square feet of living space,” notes Phil Mosher, a sales representative for Gino’s Homes. He points out that bungalows now comprise more and more of the homes the builder is being asked to provide.

At the Forefront of Design Evolution Design trends are on the move.

When Huntington Homes was founded almost 25 years ago, most new homes were two-storeys with living rooms. But as needs change, so do design concepts. Take great rooms, for instance. Seemingly the norm forever, Winnipeg’s first great room was introduced by Huntington only 17 years ago in the 1993 Parade of Homes. This showhome

was extremely well received, winning Gold that year.

allowing even easier access for older people and those with walkers and wheelchairs.

The next trend—in response to an aging population—was bungalows. “However, today, a large population of new homebuyers are younger double-income professionals with families,” notes Rob Swan, who owns Huntington with his brother Sheldon. “So we’re seeing two-storeys become popular again.” He adds that, two-storeys are more conducive to today’s narrower lot widths, and more costeffective to build.

When finishing lower levels, Huntington Homes ensures that these spaces reflect the same caliber as main floors, including high ceilings and large windows. All Huntington homes come with wood structural basement floors and zoned heating with separate thermostats, making the lower level a truly comfortable living area.

Meanwhile, developers have addressed upperend markets by creating more walkout lots. Walkouts address the needs of both upper-end segments in the marketplace: older buyers downsizing (typically into bungalows) and younger buyers looking for separate floors to house kids’ areas and bedrooms (in two-storeys or walk-out bungalows). “As the kids get into their teens and early ‘20s, finished lower levels offer more room and cost a fraction of above-grade space to finish,” says Swan. “After the kids move out, the lower level is great for entertaining or when the kids come to visit with their new families.” For older buyers, buying a bungalow (walkout or not) means never having to move for accessibility reasons. Some are even “visitable,” meaning they don’t have front steps,

“Another change in the housing market is demand—by younger couples and younger thinking couples—for more modern builds, both on exterior elevations and interior floor plans,” says Swan. Huntington Homes’ in-house design department uses the latest 3D design software to allow clients to visualize their new home. Huntington not only incorporates the latest proven technologies to build a better home, but with their finger on the pulse of evolving trends, they ensure that the latest in design requirements are incorporated into their clients’ new homes. Huntington offers clients almost a quarter century of technology and design innovation. Visit them at their showhomes at 54 Brookstone in South Pointe and 21 Hunterbrook in Bridgwater Forest.

Satisfying Southern Demand By Kelly Gray Winnipeg’s new homebuyers are looking south like never before. Fortunately, developers have been working hard to create exciting neighbourhoods filled with innovation, architectural excellence and easy accessibility. South Pointe is a great example. Located off Waverley Street in the southwestern sector of what is the fastest growing area in the city, South Pointe is a 480acre master planned, mixed-use community. Expectations are that when complete the development will incorporate approximately 1,500 single-family homes, about 25 acres of multiple family housing, and eventually accommodate upwards of 2,000 homes. As well, a large portion of South Pointe will be public reserve, which will include more than 64 acres of lakes and parks. Also included in the area will be approximately 55 acres of commercial land that will host a wide variety of services, such as retail, office space, and entertainment. “There is a tremendous demand for properties in the southwest section of Winnipeg,” says David Borger, Vice President Land Development with Ladco, a long-standing property firm that is behind South Pointe. Indeed, Ladco has brought some of Winnipeg’s best-known addresses to market. These include Windsor Park, Southdale and Royalwood. According to Borger, this new project has become another huge success for the company with 224 housing permits issued in 2010, placing the development among the top three fastest growing new communities in the city. Consider here that of the 514 lots placed in the market for Stages II and I, only two remain. According to Borger, the popularity is being driven by location – South Pointe is conveniently sited just off Waverley Street in the southwest quadrant of the city near the University of Manitoba – as well as its considerable slate of amenities. “This year will see us continue work on the parks and walking trails as well as a playground and playing field,” he says, adding that they expect to double the length of the trails this year. To meet the need, Ladco’s Development Officer Michael Carruthers remarks that they are now servicing Stage III creating 180 new lots. “We are also looking at Stage IV, which will create an additional 150 lots,” he says, adding that once they have more people located in the community, they can begin looking at commercial development where they have three potential sites in the master plan.

Another key feature of the development is the participation of 13 of Manitoba’s leaders in new home construction. A full list of homebuilders is available on Ladco’s website at www.ladcocompany.com, but the selection and quality of participating builders is second to none. “Designs are flexible and very contemporary,” says Carruthers. “The builders have really come forward with winning concepts that have proven to be extremely popular with the home buying public,” he says, noting that Ladco approves designs in an effort to maintain consistent elements throughout the community. “By and large however, we try to not get in the way of a good design. We look mostly at maintaining home size and the character and appearance of the street view.”

of Winnipeggers. While the community would never be described as an entry level development, it is designed for mixed use with multi family properties, locations ideal for seniors and premier homes all working together to create a thriving social fabric. “South Pointe is a great example of community building and sustainable residential development. Here was an opportunity to create a cohesive neighbourhood that brings together a lot of current thinking in mixed use planning, landscape design and infrastructure,” concludes Borger. So far, hundreds of new homebuyers agree and have voted their support of South Pointe by stepping up to a new home of their own in this rapidly growing section of Winnipeg.

Consistently Superior Quality One feature that is sure to strike anyone visiting a Parkhill showhome is the unerringly superior level of quality and innovation evident in each and every design. For instance, take the fact that over the past few years, the builder has consistently introduced new and exciting products to the Parade of Homes. Last spring it was a combination of black granite with light-coloured polished concrete in the kitchen island. The stunning combination certainly garnered a lot of attention. This year, visitors should watch for the introduction of a delightful flooring product – FiberFloor – featured in the all-season sunroom of Parkhill’s new showhome on 7 Elstree Court in Royalwood. The 1959-square-foot threebedroom bungalow also has a formal dining room with walk-through kitchen. Instead of last year’s European-style kitchen with awning cabinets, this year’s design features a corner pantry, a seven-foot island and a microwave integrated into the hood fan. If people were talking about the awning cabinets for a long time after visiting last year’s showhome (seen here), the two-sided fireplace in the great room was garnering just as much attention. In fact, it was so popular that Parkhill Homes decided to use a similar design in their new Spring 2011 showhome, this time strategically positioning the fireplace between the great room and the sunroom.

Visitors will also be delighted by the master bedroom and its large bay window. The ensuite features a whirlpool tub and custom shower combination, as well as a water closet tucked behind the shower for privacy. Of course, just as in the kitchen, the countertops are granite. Meanwhile, the floor is heated ceramic tile. There is carpet in the bedrooms but a maple hardwood runs throughout the dining room, great room, kitchen and eating nook. The builder also installed a power humidifier, a standard feature for all the homes in which they use hardwood. And this is not the only consistent decision the builder makes when carefully constructing a home. Standard to every Parkhill home are triple paned windows, piled foundation and a heat recovery/ventilation system. Year in and year out, the builder delights visitors to the Parade of Homes with new ideas and designs. But one thing that never

changes is the uncompromising quality of the craftsmanship throughout every single one of their showhomes. It’s the same calibre of fine finishing and construction that each and every homeowner can expect when they build their custom home with Parkhill Homes.

HOMES & neighbourhoods

Manitobans Still Astonished Maric Homes has built a loyal following among those attending the bi-annual Parade of Homes events. The builders’ showhomes have developed a reputation of ‘not-to-be-missed.’ This spring’s parade is no different. Maric has been able to sustain this level of interest for several decades, thanks to a consistent ability to create homes that inspire, and more often than not, astonish. There’s no question that visitors have been and will be wowed by the 2,908-square-foot showhome at 46 Highland Creek in Bridgwater Forest. The two-storey exudes an aura of tranquility and luxury right from the front entrance with its custom edge grain fir door. In the spacious foyer visitors capture a view of the grand staircase, its glass railing continuing to the open second level. They can see a glimpse of the great room, too, its curved stone wall defining the space with elegance and distinction. But it’s not until they arrive in the space flowing between the kitchen and the great room that they will fully appreciate the level of quality and innovation in this home. And just when they think no further surprises are in store, they will make their way upstairs to the spa-like ensuite with its freestanding tub, huge window, and double vessel sinks on a vast vanity. Once again, this home lives up to the Maric motto: “We build to astonish.” It’s a maxim by which the company has operated for years, and it continues to do so. This unflinching

approach has made Maric Homes one of Winnipeg’s leaders in custom residential construction. “We strive every day to create the best possible product, design, workmanship, detail and customer service out there,” says Marketing Manager Caroline Maric. “We are always looking at the latest trends and newest products along with our proven classics.” It is also an approach that goes into all sizes and styles of homes constructed by the experienced builder. That consistency is in evidence at 19 Autumnview Drive in South Pointe. The 1,780 square foot bungalow

demonstrates that a brilliantly designed and superbly finished home is within everyone’s reach. “Whether we are building a modest starter home or a lavish showhome with every extra, if it’s your dream, it’s our reality,” says Maric, adding, “Winnipeggers are lucky to have many stunning developments to choose from.” Maric is currently building in South Pointe, Bridgwater Forest, Amber Trails, McBeth Landing, Royalwood, Van Hull Estates, Pritchard Farm Southlands Village and Aspen Lakes, site of their third showhome at 32 Aspen Drive.

By Lynne Mustard Despite the deep chill that settled over Winnipeg this winter, Eric Vogan, Land Development Manager, Qualico Communities says Sage Creek remained a hotbed of building activity. From the windows of Qualico’s striking new head office building in the Sage Creek Village Centre, Vogan can survey the progress. “We’re finishing up luxury elements on Blue Sun Drive and Red Lily Road,” Vogan states happily, “and we’re very excited with the progress on the next phase of Sage Creek.” In keeping with the development’s philosophy of nature being part of the plan, a crew has already excavated new wetlands from the frozen land. They’re currently digging in sewer lines and as soon as the frost is out of the ground, roadwork will begin. It’s all part of the preparation stage for Sage Creek’s Phase 5 that will feature over 200 single-family homes straddling a pair of wetlands and located adjacent to a public reserve and a proposed school site. This new phase will become the upscale address for a neighbourhood of luxury and custom homes. Maric Homes will be joining the current group of luxury and custom builders, which consists of Hearth, Arlt, Sterling and Foxridge Homes, KDR Design Builders, Gino’s and Artista Homes. “The luxury builders have home plans that are already well defined,” Vogan explains,

references the success of the elegant condos on Tansi Lane and Red Moon Road and adds that Randall Homes has a new townhouse project under construction on Burning Glass Road.

There will be a significant offering of larger lots for luxury and custom homes in Phase 5. Vogan notes that such lots have a history of selling very well in Sage Creek.

There will also be 14 acres of park and wetlands in Phase 5, with over seven of the acres dedicated to a recreational area for casual and organized sports. Vogan reports that he and his team have already held a residents’ Open House in Sage Creek to lay out options in terms of what the city would support in the organized recreational park.

“Those who wait until the fall of this year may find the best lots already gone,” he comments. Luxury and custom show homes are currently located on Blue Sun Drive and Wood Sage Crescent, with a new village of showhomes opening on Blue Sun Drive this fall. With so many quality builders involved in Sage Creek, there is tremendous architectural variety available within the community. Vogan

“We wanted the homeowners’ input, to ensure that the types of uses we propose are consistent with what they desire,” he says. Although the Province of Manitoba has yet to approve a school in Sage Creek, Qualico Communities is presently consulting with the Louis Riel School Division so the proposed school site and recreational area will work well together. The next step is to get the recreational park plan approved by the City.

Spring News

Builders Artista, Gino’s, KDR, Hearth, Arlt, Sterling and Foxridge will all have showhomes in the Spring Parade of Homes, March 5 - 27, 2011. The Spring Parade will increase demand, so Vogan is eager for the roadwork to begin in Phase 5, as it will increase their supply of lots, particularly those overlooking the parks and wetlands. Sage Creek is also laced with many kilometres of trails that will converge at the future Village Centre, and Vogan confides he will be announcing significant Village Centre news in the near future, which will further enhance the community’s appeal. Sage Creek is blossoming into a friendly, walkable neighbourhood, just as envisioned and for Vogan, it’s a wonderful sight to behold.

Playing with Fire As children we were told never to play with fire, but that’s exactly what Arlt Homes has been doing by ingeniously incorporating some hot new trends into their latest display homes. At 50 Highland Creek Road in Bridgwater Forest, a ribbon gas fireplace graces the contemporary great room. “There are no louvers so we get to feature the fireplace unit and surrounding materials without distraction,” notes Jason Arlt, VicePresident of Arlt Homes. The fire and crystals are also emphasized by the hearth-free design.

Equally stunning is the oak hardwood spanning the main floor. “We’re seeing a move towards more distinctive flooring,” explains Arlt. A unique oil finish imbues the wood with a light natural colouring that pays homage to the park-like view afforded by floor-to-ceiling windows. While exploring new possibilities, Arlt Homes also retains those mainstays – such as bringing the outside in – that make a home inviting. Accordingly, the airy tones of the flooring are anchored by charcoal millwork, in acknowledgment of the still

popular choice of darker stains for cabinets and trim. The contrast is fabulous! It’s another winning combination, much like the decision to select a corner fireplace to go with the entertainment unit in the lower level. And with such large windows, visitors to the Spring Parade of Homes may be forgiven if, for a moment, they forget they’re no longer on the main floor. In fact, like many of the homes Arlt has built in Bridgwater Forest, the entire house design is oriented to the backyard to maximize the view of a lake, forest or park. “We were lucky enough to build two of our display homes on lake lots this year,” notes Arlt, adding that the other one is located at 70 Blue Sun Drive in Sage Creek. “Many people are no longer willing to compromise on materials and finishes,” Arlt points out. “They are really thinking about how to make the most of their home, without sacrificing practicality.” Along with unique finishes for backsplash and cabinetry, prospective homeowners are increasingly opting for features such as glass inserts and open-style shelving.

“You’re not just building a house, you’re also buying into a lifestyle,” says Arlt. It’s a builder’s role, he adds, to showcase new possibilities. Whether it’s using maintenancefree materials or incorporating “visitable design” features, the Arlt homes on display at the Spring Parade are sure to ignite the imagination!

job site is scheduled at the framing stage so homeowners can inspect the work in progress. “Our goal is to follow through on our promise to provide the best quality and service we can,” says Wooden.

Striking just the right balance between openness and privacy is an art, one perfected by Kensington Homes in this showhome at 14 Blue Sun Drive in Sage Creek. “We pay a lot of attention to coming out with designs that are very functional for today’s family,” notes Sales Manager David Wooden. A comfortably large foyer leads into well-defined living spaces. For instance, while light still flows between the great room and the dining room/kitchen area, a half wall and a framed entrance in a contrasting colour create a sense of separation between the two spaces. Meanwhile, the upscale designer kitchen features an abundance

of cabinets with stainless steel accents. Those in the dining room area are raised off the ground for a more furniture look. “We are finding that some of our clients want to forgo the formal dining room and have only one eating area,” says Wooden. “We listen to what our customers are telling us and try to incorporate that into our plans.”

Quality is certainly in evidence throughout this showhome. Fine finishing details include cultured stone and James Hardie trim on the exterior, and 3-inch baseboards and casings as well as hardwood flooring throughout the main floor. In the great room, Kensington created a new design for the entertainment centre, cladding the fireplace in custom tile. Nor did the builder stop at the main floor. A bar, games centre and television area in the

lower level highlight some of what Kensington could do for homeowners who choose to have their basements finished by the builder as well. After all, part of a showhome’s purpose is to showcase possibilities. For instance, all bedrooms in this floor plan are a good size, not just the master bedroom. “It’s a great family home,” says Wooden. Kensington Homes has been building for Manitoba families for more than 40 years. At the Spring 2011 Parade, the builder has a total of five showhomes, sprinkled among the developments of Kildonan Creek, Canterbury Park, Sage Creek and Bridgwater Forest.

In fact, communication with the customer is very important to Kensington Homes. The team pays a lot of attention to keeping the customer involved throughout the building process, not just at the beginning and the end. Accordingly, a walk-through of the

Have it All Imagine having exactly the home you want, but never having to mow the lawn or shovel the driveway again. Sounds like a fantasy? It’s not. Manitobans need look no further than Pritchard Farm Southlands Village to have all the advantages of building a custom home while enjoying all the benefits of condominium living. A Manitoba first, this ‘bare land’ condominium community offers residents the opportunity to select from three of the province’s premiere builders—Maric, Arlt and Irwin Homes—to create a single family home that meets their particular tastes and needs. “People get to put their own mark on the property while letting someone else do all the work,” sums up Eric Vogan, Land Development Manager at Pritchard Farm Southlands Ltd.

or early summer. “We’ve definitely had good response,” says Krista Koop of Irwin Homes. “It’s more appealing to the buyer to have a totally private personalized home.” At Maric Homes, Marketing Manager Caroline Maric agrees. “This unique development offers customers the comfort, luxury and security of a condo lifestyle with all the added benefits of a single family home. It’s nestled in the heart of Pritchard Farm Southlands with the creek and pathways designed so that this beautiful community blends together as a whole,” she says. Many of the homes border either Southlands Creek or a naturally landscaped dry creek bed. Over the winter, the developer oversaw preparations for the planting of shoreline vegetation to enhance water quality and sustainability.

Snow removal and maintenance of all landscaping, streets and common elements services are the responsibility of a professional property management firm. “So you can have confidence everything is going to be done right,” says Jason Arlt, vice-president of Arlt Homes, adding that the common element is very reasonably priced.

For their properties, residents can choose from a selection of landscaping options as well as from a myriad of home design options, including walk-out or look-out lower levels. The builders have been highlighting these possibilities in exciting show homes. The new Arlt display home is being unveiled this spring, while Maric and Irwin are each currently building their second. “We’re working on a new one,” confirms Koop.

With the first phase already sold out and the second phase halfway there, the developer will be unveiling the final phase of 36 lots in spring

Maric adds that they are excited to be part of the ongoing development. “It’s a great opportunity for Maric Homes and our

customers as it expands our range of building and offers clients more options,” she says. “Plus this is a wonderful area to live in. You have all the tranquility of the country without the hustle and bustle of the city, yet you’re just around the corner from the city’s bright lights.” Located in East St. Paul, just north of the Perimeter and east of Henderson Highway, the community is only minutes away from the shops and restaurants of Regent Avenue. Community centres, golf courses and curling clubs are also nearby. And without the demands of property maintenance, residents will have more time for golfing, curling, and exploring the pathways that connect throughout the Pritchard Farm Southlands community. Says Arlt: “My clients tell me, ‘this is going to help me live my life better’.”

Best of Both Worlds Arlt’s new display condominium in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village highlights some of the many design and finishing possibilities open to homeowners who want a turnkey lifestyle without giving up any of the advantages of a personalized, single-family custom home. “Homeowners have the option of customizing one of our existing plans or developing an entirely new set of plans to meet their particular needs,” emphasizes Jason Arlt. Available for viewing this spring, the showhome at 2 Hearthstone Grove features a sophisticated style for which Arlt is becoming increasingly known. Travertine tile and premium cabinetry finishes are some of the higher end touches that distinguish this elegant bungalow. Others include distinctive light fixtures, hardwood flooring and a fabulous ensuite with double sinks, tile shower, soaker tub and heated tile floor. A look-out design for the lower level translates into larger than standard windows that capture more light as well as the view of the landscaped dry creek bed at the rear of the house. “The main floor is ideal for two people, with plenty of space for extended family or

Beautiful Rural Setting

The municipality of East St. Paul offers much to those looking to bridge urban amenities with country lifestyle. Lying just outside the city of Winnipeg to the northeast, the community was once the domain of market gardeners, grain growers and ranchers. Today, East St. Paul is home to some of the most prestigious housing developments in Manitoba, with residents enjoying large sized lots amid pastoral settings that give onto stunning river, forest and grassland views. “I’ve lived in the municipality for many years and have seen many positive changes,” says local resident and developer Johnathan Fahr, of The Fahr Group. He comments that life in East St. Paul is one that has lower taxes than nearby Winnipeg, but offers most, if not all, the same amenities. Indeed, these attributes include good schools, recreational facilities and sport teams, not to mention shopping with major grocery retail close at hand. As well, the fact that the municipality is being built up with ‘A’ list developments means basic infrastructure like roads, water and sewer are all in top shape, a fact that lessens worry for homeowners who don’t have to think about big expenses for civic improvements.

“East St. Paul is also very close to recreation with places like the floodway, Birds Hill Provincial Park and two of Manitoba’s most prestigious golf courses, Elmhurst and Pine Ridge, just minutes away. For those who like to spend weekends in cottage country, expect to have at least half an hour taken off your travel time, thanks to East St. Paul’s close proximity to major highways and routes that don’t include heavy city traffic.” One thing that tends to amaze Fahr is that East St. Paul is not larger in terms of its population. “There are simply so many good qualities to this community. I find it surprising that there has not been a flood of people making the move for the lifestyle options,” he says, noting

that the municipality is an area with low population density, and where people are not living on top of one another. “It’s all here - the closeness to the city and its open air of country living all in a setting with lower taxes, lower crime and a lower cost per square foot. In East St. Paul this is living as life should be.” The newest community in East St. Paul is Prairie Ridge, a new development dedicated to the living large lifestyle with one and two-acre estate lots. Lasting Impressions A visit to either of the Hearth showhomes in this spring’s Parade is quite simply unforgettable. Known for their imaginative floor plans, the builder does not disappoint. Vaulted ceilings, interesting angles and exciting architectural features combine with exotic finishes, distinctive details and innovative styling to create a lasting impression. For instance, take Hearth’s Gold-winning showhome at 66 Blue Sun Drive in Sage Creek. The view from the foyer encompasses a full-height, custom-designed sandblasted glass panel defining the dining room, which is then separated from the great room by a freestanding see-through fireplace. The spaces are both open and separate. The adjacent kitchen features a Zebrano laminate island, a perfect transition between the acacia hardwood floor and the lighter maple cabinets. Huge windows in the open great room/kitchen area overlook the lake, as do upper and lower south facing decks. Off the master bedroom, a luxury ensuite encompasses a corner soaker tub, rain shower, marble countertops and cork flooring.

Dream Catcher Just a short 50-minute drive north of Winnipeg sits an opportunity to take dreams of a relaxing lake lifestyle to the next level and make them reality. We’re speaking about Sunset Bay Estates on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg just south of Grand beach. The site features 166 large lake view and back tier lots with privacy in mind. According to the developer, the 100 by 250-foot parcels are larger than what one might expect from a comparable lake Winnipeg cottage property. Indeed, each lot enjoys a public preserve behind each property to further enhance the quiet nature of this community. Also, there is a larger road right-of-way and there are guidelines for 25-foot treed buffers between neighbours. And thanks to the rise in the land, even some back lots have spectacular lake views. As Manitoba cottages are usually handed down from generation to generation, a development like Sunset Bay Estates that lets you buy a lot and build your own cottage is priceless. You can build your dream cottage here and then watch it increase in value over the years.

Popularity of the new community has been extremely high. So far, Phase I is 80 percent sold out. Now the developers report they are beginning work on Phase II, with services expected to be complete this year. With such a short drive and excellent road, people who have been exploring the area have been excited by how much there is to offer. Of course, there is the lake and its incredible views and wonderful sandy beach, but there is so much more. Sunset Bay Estates is in close proximity to topflight golf courses, marinas, recreation trails, a casino and even shopping. There are hospitals and medical centres as close as 20 minutes away. Grocery, hardware and other shops are either local in the nearby town of Grand Marais or available in the nearby communities of Pine Falls or Selkirk, where there is a wide variety of dining options and even a movie theatre.

town of Grand Marais or explore the region more widely on a trail that can take people all the way to the Ontario border and beyond. The development will have an environmentally friendly low-pressure sewer system. This allows for easy year round use of the cottage, something many Lake Winnipeg communities struggle with. The community is subject to a few guidelines designed to maintain the ambiance and value of the development over time. For example, home sizes must be at least 1200 square feet for a bungalow and 1450 square feet for a two storey, and heights must not exceed 35 feet. There is no time limit to start construction, but once you do begin, property owners must close in the exterior within two years. The developer has finance terms that make it easy to get involved in Sunset Bay Estates. They will provide financing with as little as 10 percent down, making it easier than ever to realize your dreams of a Lake Winnipeg lifestyle.

SunSet Bay Estates also borders on the Trans Canada Trail system, a cross-country network of recreation pathways that are maintained regularly. The walking trail is a perfect way to get to amenities from bakery to groceries in the

This luxury home on Christie Road enjoys outstanding vistas of an idyllic setting in south Winnipeg’s most exclusive executive enclave, only 20 minutes from downtown. Floor-toceiling windows provide stunning views and an abundance of natural light at all times of the day. Often, deer and other wildlife can be spotted in the professionally landscaped yard. Solid site-finished oak hardwood and heated tiles alternately grace most of the 3700-squarefoot main floor of this bungalow. In the dining room, a three-tiered contemporary chandelier takes full advantage of the 14-foot ceilings. Nearby, a striking suspended arch frames the gourmet kitchen. The built-in stainless steel professional series appliances include warming drawers, an instant hot water distribution centre, an oversized fridge, double stack ovens and a gas cooktop. The huge master bedroom also features a spalike ensuite where homeowners can relax in the two-person custom-tiled air tub or in the oversized Kohler touch-screen shower with its rejuvenating rain showerhead and adjustable body sprays. Or simply enjoy the warmth and comfort of the bedroom fireplace, one of three gas units in the home. A curved lit staircase with custom stainless steel railing and glass panels leads to a magnificent 3300-square-foot lower level, fully finished to the same standards as the main floor. Equipped with a custom wet bar, tieredseating home theatre, an exercise room and a guest suite second-to-none, this lower level exceeds all expectations. Interior Transformation By Christine Hanlon Virtually every space of this almost 40-year-old bungalow was touched by All Canadian Renovations (ACR) during a complete interior rejuvenation. The owner initially hired the award-winning renovator to update her kitchen and bathroom. She was so pleased with the unfolding transformation that she asked them to continue with the rest of the interior. All Canadian opened up the walls between the kitchen, dining room, family room and living room areas. “There was a staircase so we had to deal with that,” notes Marcel Verrier, Renovation Consultant on the project. ACR added a custom stainless steel railing to coordinate with the many new stainless steel features and accents, such as the nearby hood fan. In the kitchen, glazing on the new cabinets brings out the details of the elegant door style, while a darker stain on the crown moulding and in the island provides contrast. Under-cabinet lighting and numerous outlets increase functionality. At the same time, all the new high-end appliances are seamlessly built-in, including the island’s induction cooktop and the Miele wall ovens. With its square stainless steel and copper tiles, the backsplash also coordinates well with the appliances. The tiles also define the stepped ceiling detail above the island. All Canadian then used a rectangular version of the tiles for the central feature wall. They also incorporated numerous art niches to showcase the owner’s crystal collection. 108 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2011

Storage space, both decorative and functional, was very important to the homeowner, not only in the kitchen and adjoining areas, but also in the bathroom/laundry room. In this area, ACR installed an abundance of white thermofoil cabinets. Unlike the kitchen countertop, which is finished in granite, the surface of the laundry room counter is stainless steel. The floor, however, is the same as in the kitchen, front foyer and back entrance: a heated travertine marble tile. Even the floor register is made from marble! Meanwhile, the original hardwood flooring was kept in order to define the family room and sunken living room. “We had to add a few pieces to the edge of the wood flooring after we removed the walls,” recalls Verrier. “It was challenging, but we managed to match the existing flooring.” All Canadian created a curved transition to the sunken living room. For balance and symmetry, they replicated the curve where the tile meets the hardwood in the family room as well. Besides the hardwood, the renovator incorporated several other preexisting features into the updated design. While repainting all the walls and installing potlights in the ceilings throughout the house—upgrading the electrical where necessary—they kept the living room’s open beam ceiling intact.

The limestone wall into the family room is another example. All Canadian preserved the limestone on one side while replacing a woodburning fireplace with an electric unit on the side facing the living room. “After removing the other walls, we installed a support beam to ensure the structural components would be doubly secure,” notes Verrier, adding that the home was very soundly built and needed no structural or exterior work. However, All Canadian did replace all the windows with triple-pane highly energy efficient units. In the living room, they also installed a large picture window in place of three smaller ones. “She was so happy when she found out she could have one large window,” recalls Verrier. He adds that the most challenging window was the one between the kitchen and the owner’s large craft area. All Canadian had the window custom-made with 10 mm glass. “We touched just about every room in the house,” notes Verrier. And then, when the renovation was all finished, the owner called All Canadian once again, this time, for an addition! Verrier and his team are currently adding two adjoining rooms, including an all-season pentagonal gazebo finished in 100 percent clear cedar. With windows all around and two huge garden doors, this fabulous new space should be ready just in time for spring.

Professional Wall Finishing Often, when John Garcea’s company was bidding on a commercial project, the client would ask him: “Can you do the painting as well?” Garcea knew that amongst the construction company’s different divisions was most of the equipment necessary to handle this part of the project. His team was also very comfortable in working closely with designers and architects, something they do on a regular basis. What he was missing was experience and expertise in painting and wallpaper. That’s where Phil Parisi came in. With 27 years of experience in the construction industry, Parisi comes with a background as a professional painter, project manager and business owner. For Garcea this was a perfect fit. After several discussions, he and Parisi became business partners, launching Colour Design Decorating. The company employs only fully trained professional painters who have been through an accredited community college apprenticeship program. “They are trained in the proper and most professional manner to complete a project,” explains Parisi. The high quality of the work is evident in projects such as the lobby of the new MainStay

Suite Hotel where Colour Design Decorating supplied and installed the wall paper. The company also painted the walls of the boardroom, as well as the tray ceiling. In fact, since its inception, Colour Design Decorating has completed a wide variety of commercial and residential projects. “We’ve done projects as big as a Superstore, an Extra Foods and a senior’s care home, and as small as the renovation of a single office,” says Parisi. While a large portion of their work is commercial, Colour Design Decorating is fully equipped to complete residential projects as well. “There’s a big difference to having your home painted professionally,” notes Parisi. He adds that Colour Design Decorating’s close

association with S J Construction means that homeowners also have a number of complementary services at their disposal. The construction company has divisions specializing in everything from concrete to tiling. (In fact, one division – Tuscany Construction – completed the tiling in this boardroom as well). Whether they are building a new home or renovating, this array of services makes coordinating a project easier than ever for Manitoba homeowners. They not only have the advantage of being able to go to one place for several of their finishing needs; they also have the assurance that those needs will be met with experienced, professional service.

The Future has Arrived By Christine Hanlon

It’s unlike anything Winnipeg has ever seen before. In fact, the new M-Concept showroom on Portage Avenue would be right at home in London or New York. Fittingly, the open, two-storey glass and concrete showroom encompasses an equally exciting selection of cabinetry and furnishings, visible, through a 16 x 16 foot bank of windows, right from the street. The main floor features three full kitchens in a modern minimalist style virtually standard to Europeans, now available to Manitobans, thanks to M-Concepts’ Artur and Edyta Jasiakiewicz. Rather than isolated cabinets and components, the couple wanted to show fully functional kitchens. “You can get a better sense of what this would do for your space,” says Artur. With the adjacent sofa and table, each space looks more like part of an open concept home than the corner of a store. Nearest to the entrance, the round kitchen island is bound to catch visitors by surprise. Artur explains that with Corian it’s possible to create a seamless countertop in any shape, and include an integral sink as well. Behind the island, a hideaway pantry conceals sliding stainless steel drawers and all appliances except the fridge.

In the kitchen to the left, even the Sub-Zero fridge is hidden behind cabinetry panels next to shelving with a linen-look interior. Like in all M-Concept kitchens, all drawers and doors are soft-close. The countertop is quartz just like the kitchen to the right, where the white counter is matched with cabinets in both black lacquer and

white painted yellow pine for a crisp contrast. A glass-bottom panel with automated lighting illuminates both the interior and the work surface below. Ingenious features like this add uncomplicated functionality. Meanwhile, a linear cooktop and flat stainless steel hood fan add never-seen-before style.

The story continues up the unconventional staircase, flanked by a huge screen with a looping video. Upstairs, beyond the glass railing, M-Concept introduces its extended collection of Italian-made Aster furnishing and components. A complete bathroom, backlit floating shelving and much more - now here for modern-minded Manitobans to explore.

“When you’re done using the kitchen, it’s basically out of sight,” explains Artur. “It looks like a piece of furniture.”

Superior Performance & Aesthetics

Europeans have long enjoyed the clean, uncluttered look of toilets with concealed tanks. “Of the millions of toilets sold worldwide, the majority are wall-hung,” says Astrid Bergstrom, Showroom Manager at Robinson Bath Centre. Hiding the tank in a standard wall reduces the projection of a toilet by up to eight inches. Duravit wall-hung toilets are also height adjustable – anywhere from 15 to 19 inches – and more hygienic. And with all their toilets, the glazing is flushed down the trap and the rim is manually glazed. As for the tank inside the wall, it is made of the same durable polystyrene material as a car gas tank. At Duravit, every single tank off the production line is leak-tested and comes with a lifetime warranty. Meanwhile, the carrier connecting the toilet to the wall is rated to 880 lbs. Hidden components are tool-free, accessible and removable by hand through the actuator panel. Like this one, many of the toilets are dual flush and exceed WaterSense conservation standards. This commitment to sustainability is matched with superior aesthetics. All Duravit fixtures are designed by designers, with series to complement any bathroom, from traditional to modern. Designed by Philippe Starck, this particular toilet is available with various options in coordinating washbasins, bidets and urinals. Some series also include tub, shower base and cabinet fixtures.

Kitchen&Bath Beautiful Functionality

A blend of bold aesthetic details combines with fabulous functional features in this stunning kitchen by Norcraft Cabinetry. Designer Karen Neufeld selected Yorkshire maple cabinets in a smoke stain for the island and peninsula as well as the area around the hearth. The white Valleyview thermofoil cabinets create a striking contrast while coordinating with the countertops. The wall unit to the right of the stove has an aluminum door with an acid etched glass insert. For another decorative touch, Neufeld used columns and beaded panels to support the raised seating area at the back of the peninsula. She also endowed both the peninsula and island with a furniture base detail, balanced by a combination of sub-mouldings and heavy crown mouldings enclosing the cabinets around the hearth. The hearth area is flanked by pullout mini pantry units that house spices, oils and much more for easy access while cooking. Across the way, the island has open shelving for cookbooks as well as a double waste bin and a bar fridge. Everything is built-in for a sleek finished look. This includes the microwave, wall ovens and coffee maker, all enclosed perfectly within the combination of white cabinets and drawers. Adding another element of superior functionality, all drawer boxes feature full extension, and soft close.

A Higher Level of Custom

Founded in 1946, Hawthorne Kitchens is a fourth generation family business and is the most experienced cabinetmaking company in Manitoba. Hawthorne specializes in custom kitchen and bath cabinetry. In fact, Hawthorne is one of the only kitchen cabinetmakers to custom-make its own solid wood doors. “Building our own doors gives us the ability to change any aspect of a door style to meet the individual style preference of our customers,” explains Ron Dyck, President of Hawthorne Kitchens. The country style kitchen featured here is as elegant as it is functional. Varying the heights and depths of the cabinets brings a sense of proportion to the 30-foot expanse spanning the back wall. “They gave us an idea of what they wanted; then we created a design that would make the kitchen look appealing,” says Dyck. Incorporated into the design is a set of cherished antique posts and corbels provided by the homeowners. Both stylish and functional, pullout spice racks flank the cooktop. All cabinets feature a maple beaded mitered door with a solid, recessed panel. A glaze on the ivory stain picks up the details while giving the cabinets a soft, antique patina. “We manufacture everything in our shop precisely for each customer.” It’s one of the ways Hawthorne Kitchens ensure that each kitchen is tailored to each customer’s unique needs. 115

Playing with Light By Christine Hanlon

Selecting the right light fixtures is an important aspect to defining the look and feel of a home. The shape, composition and finish of a fixture all contribute to creating a particular style. For instance, this pendant light by Hubbardton Forge is available in three different finishes as well as three different glass colours. “You can also pivot the glass to change the aspect,” notes Brett Robinson, President of Robinson Lighting. Drawing its inspiration from modern sculptural forms, this award-winning collection of transition and contemporary fixtures is among the most distinctive in the industry. Highly configurable, the Hubbardton pendant collection allows consumers to select from several choices of glass, finish and shade options to create a customized design that suits their personal décor. “They are a custom-order line because of all the different options,” notes Robinson. Each piece is hand-forged one at a time by skilled artisans at the company’s forge in Castleton, Vermont. Creating high quality wrought-iron lighting and accessories, Hubbardton is the oldest contemporary commercial forge in North America. “The pure workmanship of each fixture is outstanding,” says Robinson. He adds that Robinson Lighting has been proud to carry the line for more than 10 years. Beyond the examples available in the showroom, Hubbardton Forge offers a wide selection of wall sconces, floor lamps, chandeliers, flush and semi-flush ceiling fixtures, table lamps and outdoor lighting. Each fixture features the renowned quality and simplicity that has made Hubbardton a leader in the industry. In an ongoing collaborative process, designers, engineers and craftspeople work together, connecting and exploring new design directions. The result is an ever-growing selection of designs and options. Much like Hubbardton, Robinson Lighting has a long history of quality and a strong focus on collaboration. Now with the fourth generation at the helm, the family company relies on a team of experienced buyers, and sales people make a point of keeping abreast of developments in all aspects of lighting and lighting fixtures. Most are accredited by the American Lighting Association as Lighting Specialists.

Robinson Lighting also invites clients to come and ‘play with light’ in the Juno Lighting Concept Centre. The multi-function room supports staff in assisting clients to identify the proper

design&decor Complete Home Décor Carolyn Giese has been decorating showhomes since 1997, so she’s never surprised when admirers of her work call about their existing home. “I get a lot of phone calls from people who love the home they’re in but wish it could look as beautiful as a showhome,” she confirms. “We do renovations, both large and small, throughout Winnipeg and the surrounding areas.” The majority of her work, however, involves working with people who are building a new home. Selecting finishes for a brand new build can be very intimidating, so Giese tries to facilitate the process by having them come directly to her design studio to make selections for both exterior and interior, all in one space. “My favourite appointment of the day is the couple that comes in with blueprints in hand and excitement on their faces,” she says. “It’s such a joy to see it all come together before their eyes. Everyone is different, so I get to experience different styles each time I help someone plan their new home.” “I love working with textiles,” she adds. “Helping them select window coverings and upholstery fabrics is my favourite part of the process.” Along with coordinating finishes, furniture and accessories, Giese’s company, Creative Window Coverings & Accessories, designs and creates custom bedding, as seen in this beautiful bedroom.

Perfect for the outdoor gourmet, this Napoleon grill is available with a selection of modular components and cabinets. “You can just have a grill,” says Helen Peters of Classic Fireplaces. “Or you can mix and match to build your own outdoor kitchen.” Options include different configurations of under grill drawers, fridge, propane or universal storage cabinets and a waste drawer with paper towel holder. All components are made of powder-coated galvanized steel with stainless steel doors and drawers. The modules are compatible with a number of Napoleon grill heads including side burners available with or without roll-top lid. A sizzle-zone option offers very intense heat from 0 to 1800 degrees in seconds. “It’s great for searing,” says Peters. “Then you can move it to the regular burners to finish it off.” Like the side burners, the grills can also come with a bottom infrared burner or sizzle zone, as well as infrared rear burners for rotisserie. Other Napoleon accessories for the outdoor kitchen include charcoal trays, stainless steel griddles and smoker tubes for the grills. “The more features you have, the better the taste!” notes Peters. She adds that Classic Fireplaces offers a full range of grilling products from wood chips and barbecue accessories to seasonings and sauces.

More Options than Ever

Simplified styling and smooth lines create a calming ambiance in this bedroom furnished with pieces from AP Industries’ latest line, the Pure Collection. “It’s a very soothing colour,” says Richard Mandarano of Contessa Fine Furniture, adding that different stain colours are also available. In fact, the pieces he is bringing in for the brand new Contessa Home Decor showroom will combine white fronts with wood in a chocolate stain. The bed on display will feature the same low profile system and distinctive headboard with square leather detail, available in pearl, black and brown, with more colours to come. Featuring Canadian-made quality and consistency, the Pure Collection also offers dressers in different widths and heights, nightstands with right or left-facing handles and a selection of armoires, sweater chests, media cabinets and full-length freestanding mirrors. “As more people opt for walk-in closets, they want more flexibility in their bedroom furniture,” notes Mandarano. And now, with the opening of a second Contessa location, there are more options than ever for discerning homeowners who depend on the furniture specialist to provide an eclectic alternative for furnishing their homes. With a grand opening scheduled for late spring, the new showroom is located on McGillivray Blvd, one km past Costco, across from Fort Whyte before McCreary Road. 119

Say “Ligne Roset” at Kesay Paris, New York and now, Winnipeg! Ligne Roset has arrived. Having access to this iconic line is a real coup for Kesay customers. Winnipeg’s premiere designer furniture store recently unveiled its new Ligne Roset gallery in its newly expanded showroom. Over the past 150 years, Ligne Roset has come to symbolize an elegant way of life, a mark of luxury, with individual pieces conceived by some of the world’s greatest talents in contemporary design. Originally designed for the private Elysee Palace apartments of one of France’s former presidents, the soft round shapes and firm seating of the Pumpkin collection (below) has all the characteristics of a Pierre Paulin design. The collection includes a loveseat, a sofa, and an armchair with a swivel or fixed base, as well as with or without headrest. Visitors to the gallery will also have the chance to experience the Michel Ducaroy-designed Togo sofa (opposite page). The inviting, ergonomically designed collection has been providing the ultimate in comfort and style for more than 30 years. Kesay is proud to have this Ligne Roset classic on display.

122 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2011

The Ligne Roset brand is extensive, offering collections that are each as different as the designers who have imagined these incomparable selections in seating. Particularly appealing to those who enjoy an informal lifestyle, the enveloping Moel armchair—seen here, above right, in a Chartreuse tone—offers the most comfortable and pleasing experience possible thanks to a distinctive open design. “We will continue to fight for uniqueness,” says Pierre Roset, one of the two brothers who have led the family company since the 1970s. “Openness of spirit, creativity, non-conformism and permanent intellectual curiosity are the characteristics of Ligne Roset. Our goal will always be to make the surroundings of our contemporaries more attractive.” With this level of commitment to design, it is not surprising that Ligne Roset is one of the only worldwide brands in any field to have been recognized with the prestigious “Red Dot Award: Best of the Best” award not once, but several times. Ligne Roset is the newest member to join Kesay’s store-within-a-store galleries. Each of

122

the contemporary, transitional and traditional galleries encompasses numerous designer lines, such as Calligaris, Thomasville, GUS* and Lexington. Providing Manitobans with a unique experience, Kesay features the widest range and largest selection of furniture in the province.

The Crossville line is only one addition in a recent expansion to the Floor Show’s hard surface product selection. Since opening its vast new showroom on Waverley Street in 2009, The Floor Show has continuously evolved to encompass an increasingly large range of finishing products that are well beyond the ordinary. This deliberate positioning has made a visit to The Floor Show an essential part of building or renovating a home, not only for Manitoba’s discerning homeowners, but also for builders, architects and designers. Having access to the best finishes all in one place has made the design process easier than ever. A fullyequipped design centre and well-organized product groupings take that process one step further. But that’s not all. Never content to rest on its laurels, The Floor Show has many more surprises planned for the future. “There are many more developments to come,” confirms Rivington. “Be sure to stay tuned!”

design&decor Spectacular Central Staircase

Running two storeys from the lower level right to the second floor, this stunning glass and steel staircase is the focal point of a contemporary interior. The transparent design allows the light to travel through the open layout of this modern home uninterrupted. “It’s the first thing you see when you come in the door and you never forget it!” says Aleem Khan, Executive Sales Director at SSG Notion. “This design was made possible because a visionary client allowed us to push the envelope.” The entire structure is carried on just a few stainless steel posts. Three layers of 10 mm glass are laminated together to form the treads, which seem to float above the bars connecting the stainless steel stringers. A sandblasted design on the treads provides grip. “It isn’t simply utilitarian; it’s a sculpture,” notes Khan. “All the connections are exposed and there is an architectural honesty in the relationship between materials and design.” Imported from Europe, the hardware attaching the glass to the steel is modified by SSG Notion to meet the needs of each project. “We have very skilled craftsmen capable of coming up with unique solutions,” says Khan. SSG Notion creates beautiful staircases, rails and frameless doors for both renovations and new home construction.

Space-saving Revolution

Designed by a team of architects and engineers, a fabulous new generation of wall beds is taking space-saving furniture to a whole new level. “For Space Sake is excited to introduce this incomparable line to Winnipeg,” says owner Pauline Boisselle. “Being European, this company has a keen sense of how to maximize space.” The line features a wide range of beds, bunk beds and home office furniture that disappear into a wall unit, behind a desk or behind a sofa— one set of bunk beds ingeniously collapses into attractive seating! When the bed seen here retracts effortlessly into the unit behind the sofa, the shelving moves from floor to wall, its contents undisturbed. This feature is particularly convenient for desk-bed combinations, where the desk comes up and over when the bed is pulled out from below. “These units can make any room truly multifunctional,” notes Boisselle. Available in a multitude of colours, in both gloss and matt finishes, the space-saving furniture coordinates with any décor. “We don’t see any reason why it can’t be gorgeous as well as functional,” says Boisselle. The new line complements the store’s mission to help people organize their closets, laundry rooms, home offices, mudrooms, pantries and more. Designers on staff provide complimentary in-home design service and estimates so customers can make informed decisions. 126 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2011

Wood Flooring is their Passion At Heartland, wood flooring is a passion. “We understand wood,” says Paul Friesen. “We appreciate the uniqueness of each species.” By focusing exclusively on hardwood and cork flooring, the team at Heartland have literally put their heart and soul into these products. Boasting no less than 15 years experience, it’s no wonder that they are considered to be Manitoba’s undisputed hardwood and cork specialists. There’s a good reason Heartland itself has been around for more than 17 years. Being a specialty store means having to be an industry expert. “We understand that there’s also a difference within species,” says Friesen. “We know that a hard maple is not the same as a silver maple. We can explain the difference between red oak and white oak. We understand why a certain cut of wood results in a certain degree of hardness and a certain aesthetic.” Having spent years applying finishes to floors, Heartland understands equally well how

finishes interact with a product and how to create a particular result. The team also works very hard to understand clients and their particular needs. “We analyze expectations and then strive to exceed them,” says Friesen, adding that every staff member is committed to taking the time to educate clients about their options. “Our first priority is to do what’s best for our client, not what’s best for our pocketbook or bottom line.” It’s this honesty and integrity that has given Heartland a stellar reputation in the industry. In fact, it is not uncommon for other retailers to come to the company for advice. “Thanks to our experience, we’ve filtered out those products that don’t make the grade,” says Friesen. He notes that a customer should never have to compromise in terms of milling, finishes, or quality of wood in order to make a price point. All Heartland products look good from day one and retain their value for a lifetime or more. And the team is always there to support clients in taking care of their treasure for many years to come. 127

“We’re dealing with products that are worth having as legacy products,” says Friesen, adding that Heartland focuses exclusively on Canadian and European hardwood with a proven track record. “When we’re talking about a floor that will last generations, is it not worth it to do it right the first time? People would be surprised at how little price difference there is between good enough and exceptional.” Outstanding products deserve superior professional craftsmanship and that’s exactly what Heartland provides. In fact, they are experts not only in providing and installing pre-finished products but also in site-finished hardwood floors, as well as installing, finishing and refinishing cork. “We intend to walk out of a person’s home proud of the work we did,” says Friesen. He explains that for the team at Heartland, providing the best possible floor for someone’s home is never just another job. For these wood aficionados, every single floor is a labour of love.

design&decor A Rich History of Quality and Value

Since its inception in 1992, Pineridge Hollow has been committed to offering guests not only great home-cooked meals, but also strong quality and value in every product sold in the store. October 15, 2009 marked the grand opening of Pineridge Hollow’s 2000-square-foot furniture showroom, and dedication to quality and positive guest experience has only grown stronger. Each furniture supplier showcased has been carefully selected to ensure every piece—from a luxurious down-filled sofa to a solid hardwood Canadianmade dining set—meets both high-quality and high-value expectations for staff and guests alike. In addition to showcasing Canadel, Statum, LEE Industries and Dash & Albert, Pineridge Hollow is one of only two Winnipeg dealers of Broyhill furniture. “When I first started the process of choosing furniture lines for our showroom, Broyhill was a stand-out, not only for quality and value, but also for selection of styles and fabrics – Broyhill is not your Grandma’s furniture anymore!” says Jan Regehr, owner of Pineridge Hollow. “Whether you have a traditional home or modern loft, Broyhill has something for everyone.” Those who purchase Broyhill can be assured of going home with beautiful solid furniture that will last a generation (or two!). Pineridge Hollow is extremely proud to include this line in their complete furniture, accessory, lighting and floor covering collections for every style and setting.

Geometric patterns are this year’s ‘it’ design in area rugs. The clean and classic lines make it easy to blend this timeless look seamlessly, with a wide variety of other patterns. Stripes and bold graphics paired with organic, floral patterns create a fantastic layered feeling. Rugs help define and ground a space while unifying furniture pieces that might otherwise make a room feel disjointed. “I am excited to see the new product coming in daily,” says Veronika Tyrkin, Interior Designer at The Area Rug Store. “Because the need and style of each customer is completely unique, I find great satisfaction in pairing the perfect rug with each space. I recommend bringing in as many sample pieces of fabrics, flooring, paint colours and pictures to help us better understand the context of your space. The more we know, the better we can help.” The Area Rug Store encourages customers to take advantage of their free in-home trial program and design consultation. “This makes finding the perfect rug to suit your style, and decorating needs as easy as possible,” says Tyrkin. The Area Rug Store’s 5,000-square-foot showroom on St. James Street has more than 1,000 area rugs in all styles, shapes and sizes, including round and square rugs, hall and stair runners, children’s rugs and Capel Braid American Originals.
