VOLVO
THE NEW VOLVO S60
The German alternative with Swedish class
T
he new Volvo S60 exudes a refreshed powerful presence of class and sophistication backed up by a sporty and pleasurable driving experience.
This new version of the previous S60 completes the full line up of the Volvo range to offer an almost unrecognisable vehicle range compared to only just a few years ago. With a premium feel inside and out and a high class finish throughout, we believe this model has to be considered as an alternative to some of the well known German competitors in this class and size of saloon. Engine options The S60 comes in three trim levels – sport, luxury and performance. The sport offers two engine options – T5 and T8 Twin engine AWD automatic plug in hybrid. The T5 engine offers 250hp channelled through
an 8-speed auto transmission with a fuel consumption of 42.8mpg. The T8 engine delivers an impressive 392hp with the help of an electric motor launching the car from 0-62mph in under five second and provides 156.9mpg. The luxury design only offers the T5 option; however, the performance offers a more powerful T8 engine, delivering 405hp and a slightly less 134.5mpg. Key Features and Price Expect to pay £30,000 to £40,000 bracket for the S60. It’s competitive with rivals, such as the BMW’s 3 Series, Audi’s A4 and the Mercedes C-Class. The range was launched in a top ‘R-Design Edition’ form, costing around £38,000. However, going forward, there will be four trim levels ‘Momentum’, ‘Inscription’, ‘R-Design’ and ‘Polestar’. All S60 models come fully equipped, with full-LED headlights, auto headlamps and wipers, active high beam and front and rear parking sensors. Inside, there’s a 12.3-inch Active TFT Crystal Driver’s instrument display to display conventional instrument binnacle dials. Also, there’s 2-Zone electronic climate control and heated front seats. Infotainment’s taken care of by a 9-inch portrait-style centre touch screen that gives you access to a 170-watt 10-speaker DAB audio system, Sensus navigation and a Bluetooth hands-free ‘phone system, plus compatibility with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G.
7
Safety Safety-wise, there’s the brand’s ‘City Safety with Autobrake technology’ package that assists the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. Also, City Safety now engages auto braking to mitigate oncoming collisions. Summary Sportier and more stylish, this more dynamic third generation S60 mid-sized sports saloon addresses the areas where previous Volvo executive cars have ultimately failed to deliver. It’s engineered to be a far better driver’s car than its predecessor and both quality and cabin design have taken a huge step forward. Plus it’s the safest contender in its class. If you’re looking for a change from your usual A4, 3 Series or C-Class, this S60’s worth a look. Telephone: 02920 644 300 www.volvocarscardiff.co.uk

POLLY JAMES
Style of the City talks exclusively with one of Wales’ favourite radio presenters
P
olly James is Cardiff’s most recognisable radio hosts. She is best known for copresenting the Capital South Wales breakfast show with Matt Lissack for six years. Before that, she began her career at Afan FM in Port Talbot, to a stint on national station in London and then returned to Cardiff. Now she’s a presenter on Radio X, the home
Wo r d s b y R O S I E H A R R I S of Chris Moyles at Breakfast and Johnny Vaughn in the afternoons. Polly James talks openly to Style of the City on life after Capital Radio, her new career in London and becoming a first-time mum. How did you find growing up around Cardiff? Well brilliant obviously, Cardiff is my home. I’m born and bred here, I’m proud to be from a city that has so much passion and pride.
14
Growing up in Cardiff was great, I grew up in Llanishen, in Rhiwbina with my mum and dad, then moved to Thornhill with mum and then I settled in Penarth. I moved out of Penarth when I was 18-years-old and moved to London. But my childhood was totally enjoyable and I have no bad memories at all. I know it’s a total cliché, but driving back over the bridge to Wales always brings excitement and a sense of warmth, as I’m coming back into my community.
THE INTERVIEW Above everything he’s a man of the people, he’s a father, a husband, he’s a mental health advocate and a boxer. He loves telling his story. I love that he’s not a closed book, we know everything about him. He’s so lovely and down to earth. My worst was Jessie J and it technically wasn’t my fault, it was more Matt. When you interview someone, you have to get them on your side and make them feel that they’re in a friendly environment. Unfortunately, Matt went in with a question “so we’ve heard you and Tom Jones are dating and been having an affair” as this was the time of The Voice being popular, and she went berserk saying “we’re here to talk about The Voice and music and that’s it” and then turned it around on us asking about our personal life and it just became really awkward. We lost her form the get-go.
I love Cardiff, it’s constantly evolving, great sporting atmosphere, a prolific music scene and a great nightlife (not that I’ve been out in a while). You’ve been a radio presenter for many years, tell us what got you into that industry? Well, it was by accident actually, I knew nothing about the radio industry at all when I first stepped into Red Dragon FM, as it was known back in the day. I was working as a promotional girl and by that I mean I was giving out leaflets at the train stations and mini deodorants around Cardiff city centre, that kind of thing. I moved to London because there was a bigger opportunity for promotions.
doing, especially sportspeople. I’ve interviewed Anthony Joshua, but my favourite was Tyson Fury. He rocked up to this evening interview in his car with his dad, we had dinner and spoke about the family.
Tell us about your departure from Capital Radio and how you felt about leaving the popular breakfast show? Leaving Capital Breakfast was super emotional, but Matt and I were ready to move on, we both had other opportunities available. We left on a high with the listeners, I was sad to leave there after 6 years but excited to start a new adventure. It was no secret that I’d grown up into a bit of a punk and into more alternative music, such as Rock. The reactions to us leaving were overwhelming on social media and it was bittersweet. Radio is such a personal platform and Matt and I really built a friendship with our listeners over the years, because we were real and we all grew up together. Thankfully, we left the show in great hands, and Roman Kemp is brilliant and has around five huge popstars on the show every week. But I do
I came back when I was 19 years old and my mum spotted an advert in the Echo that Red Dragon FM was looking for full-time promotional staff and I thought that was brilliant. When I walked through the doors of Red Dragon I had an epiphany moment and thought this was it. Very quickly I got the radio bug and wanted to be on-air and give it the best of my ability. I grew up listening to Red Dragon, I had no preconceptions of what it was and I learnt new skills quickly through the role. Who were your favourite and worst interview you ever conducted? I’ve hosted many Q&A’s, which I loved
Tyson Fury and Polly James
15
THE INTERVIEW Continued from Page 15 get why everyone was so sad, as we were a daily routine for many people. However, we left on really good terms with Capital and Matt and I are still really good friends. Matt wanted to head into management and thankfully I had already lined up my next move with Radio X. I always dreamed of being on Radio X and it sounds daft but it was a serious pinch me moment when I was offered a job at that station. It sounds like I have had an easy ride through radio, but that’s not luck, that’s me being realistic in the radio industry and me grafting hard and knowing when it’s time to move on. Tell us about your new role on Radio X? Well, it’s a dream come true. My dream was to present after Chris Moyles on Radio X. I remember when I did my first show after Chris Moyles, it was crazy. It was one of those moments when you realise you’re living the dream.
You have a very unique style, where do you get your style inspirations from? Here, there and everywhere. I call it very casual as I’m always in Joggers and a T-Shirt and Vans, but that’s my American influence, as my dad lives in Florida and I’m so much like him. I tend to dress beach-bum chic and I love just whacking on an old T-Shirt and styling it with Vans or trainers and nice jewellery. I never get worried about trying new fashion ideas and fashion is a weird word for me, as I never really care about what people think. I think it’s about how you handle yourself as a person that adds to
“
I’VE INTERVIEWED Anthony Joshua, BUT MY FAVOURITE was Tyson Fury
“
Do you have any advice for those trying to get into the industry? The advice I would give is to surround yourself with really good people in the industry. Really focus on where you would like to be in the industry, as there are so many avenues to kick start your career. I would say to have the confidence to do what you want to do, for those who want to be a radio presenter, try student radio, community radio or hospital radio to begin with. These stations are crying out for people wanting to start.
your sense of style. I don’t care what society thinks, but more often than not, people praise my style and like it. Congratulations on your news of becoming a first-time mum, how are you preparing for your new arrival? Thank you! I’m trying to eat a little bit more healthy and going to the gym a bit more. But I seriously don’t think you can prepare that much apart from buying the essentials. It sounds bazar, but I’m in this bubble at the moment of enjoying being a mum-to-be. It’s exciting and daunting and I’m trying not to go over the top with stuff. I don’t
have a birthing plan, I’m going to buy my nursery and pram and that’s about it. I feel super lucky as I have a supportive boyfriend, family and network and I am the last person out of my friends to have a baby, so I think we have this covered; although, I’m under no illusion that this is going to be easy. What’s next for you in 2020? I suppose that’s down to the child I have, I’m going to have some time off from work but I will definitely be back as radio is my job and working mothers go back to their job. The logistics of moving back to London might be difficult, as I want my child to be born and bred in Cardiff of course, but life is an adventure and I never like to plan in advance. I’ll go back to work when the opportunity is right, but I feel the last 12 years working in radio, I’ve always put it first, but now my priorities will change and my child will be first and being a great partner. ------------------------------------------Listen to Polly James on Radio X, Fridays and Saturdays. Radio X is on 104.9 FM in London, 97.7 FM in Manchester and on digital radio right across the UK, on mobile via the Radio X app and the Global Player, online or on your smart speaker.
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS What are you currently reading?
A mum-to-be book about unconventional mummies.
What are you currently listening to?
Generally, my playlist is a mix of loud metal filled with naughty words but I listen to Radio X.
What’s the last thing you ate?
I went on a trek to Pen y Fan and had a chocolate bar, eggs on toast and an apple.
What’s your philosophy to live by? Get stuck in, but don’t leave no mess.

LAINGS
FOPE JEWELLERY
F
OPE is an unmistakable jewellery brand that is well known for its innovative gold designs. Their stunning pieces stand out with a distinctive Italian style and unique look. Luxury jewellers, Laings, have a beautiful selection of FOPE pieces that you’re bound to adore. They’re proud to showcase the Italian jewellery that genuinely has a story to tell. THE FOPE FAMILY The sixth-generation of the Laing family runs Laings, and similarly, FOPE is also a family business. In 1929 Umberto Cazzola opened a goldsmith’s workshop in the Italian city of Vicenza and they can still be found in the same sun-soaked streets today. To begin with Cazzola specialised in making gold straps for Swiss watch brands. He then moved on to producing gold chains before using his expertise to create jewellery. Vicenza is one of the three historic centres of jewellery making in Italy and crafting gold is a deep-rooted tradition in this part of the world. The city holds an international reputation for its expert goldsmiths. Laings only stock brands of the highest quality, FOPE is therefore recognised in the global jewellery market as a symbol of elegance
at Laings and impressive craftsmanship. GROUND-BREAKING INVENTIONS With years of expertise behind them the third generation of the Cazzola family, founder Umberto’s grandson and granddaughter, developed a signature style for the brand and designed and launched their first fine jewellery collection.
The skills of the expert goldsmiths, combined with cutting-edge technology led to the creation of the Novecento mesh, FOPE’s first real icon. The first signature collections were launched in the late 1970s and paved the way for the brand’s national and international success. Another massive turning point in their history was the launch of Flex’it. A ground-breaking invention that makes gold stretchable, meaning that their bracelets can easily roll on to the wrist. The original jewellery is made solely of 18ct gold using a patented system of gold springs, which are hidden between the mesh chain links. Elegant, precious and easy to wear the Flex’it designs are wholly unique and all come with matching necklace, earrings and rings. ITALIAN INSPIRATION “Inspiration comes from the city and its architecture, from a scent found in a secret
19
garden or a familiar melody played by a piano.” FOPE collections take inspiration from the world around and the journey that the jewellery has been on. For example, the stunning Solo Venezia collection was inspired by the beautiful, traditional lace art of the Venetian Island of Burano, whilst Eka means ‘one’ in Sanskrit and explores the concept of adding flexibility to jewellery. Their pieces are all about creating that distinct Italian style that so many women aspire to achieve. The designs pay homage to the roots of Italian fashion, transforming centuries of style into contemporary pieces. They are all elegant designs that can be worn every day, but they also make an impact for special occasions. There’s a certain charm to the designs. A piece of their golden jewellery transports you to its enchanting home country, allowing FOPE to share Italian fashion with the rest of the world. Ways to unwind this
AUTUMN

t’s the end of Summer, and that means getting back to school, work, university…basically back to reality! We’ve been lucky enough to go on a couple of trips this year, and we do love to travel, BUT what we do find really difficult is taking a proper day off. By that we mean really relaxing, being in the moment, switching off your mind and maybe, even your phone. OK so we never switch off our phone but we can hope!
Sophie and Hannah Pycroft are the sisters behind the incredibly successful Spectrum Collections, the fabulous makeup brush brand taking the world by storm. Launching their brand from their garage in Wales, Spectrum Collections has grown at an incredible rate, their brushes are loved by countless celebrities, and have been called the “World’s most Instagrammable.” In their exclusive column for Style of the City the sisters will be sharing their beauty and makeup advice as well as highlighting some of their must-have Spectrum Collections brushes.

What we want to chat about are a few things that we do to try and unwind, and a few products that help us do that. Everyone is getting busier all the time, and the pace at which we live is always speeding up, so theme for this issue is slowing down and three steps to help you achieve some R&R. Stop scrolling! Have you ever checked how long you’re on your phone for? We genuinely lose track, especially when we’re on social media. It’s like being in a time warp! Sometimes it’s scary to think what more productive things we could get done in the time we’ve sat on our phones. Something we love to do in the evenings is indulge in a

Another simple thing that we do to try and relax, especially if you’re not looking at your phone, is to light a candle. Blue light is bad for your eyes and keeps you feeling alert, so candlelight is so much more calming for the mind. We tend to favour any

he use of colour and how you plan it through your home is vitally important to your wellbeing. Colour evokes feelings so I use it in a way that tells a story, which leads you into a home. Colour is the most important aspect of interior design; it’s what we see first. Everything is about colour and combinations of colour as it reflects your mood and personality. In this Devon country home I have used a deep green in the entrance hallway; it’s dark and luxurious. It’s a shade which evokes the tranquillity of nature and about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into
your home. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate a calming, invigorating
35
The red I have used in the TV Room of the same house is vibrant, eye catching and invigorating. It’s a colour that energises. It stands out in a neutral space and says “look at me”. I have used it with neutrals, but you can see the black curtain poles, picture frames and pieces of furniture add to the definition of the styling of the room. It’s always about balance. The authentic cowhide rug on the floor gives the scheme an added lift. Be confident in how you use colour, but always ensure it’s balanced.

FUTURE INNS
We know it is early, but can we talk about Christmas?
C
hristmas is one of the best times of the year, there is excellent food to indulge in, making time for family and catching up with friends and of course the office Christmas party. The ‘Grinch’s out there will be shaking their heads and moaning that it is too early, but the countdown to the most wonderful time of the year has started. It is time to party Most people say it does not feel like Christmas until the office party takes place. Every Friday and Saturday in December a party night is hosted at Future Inn Cardiff with a 3-course festive dinner, followed by freshly brewed tea or coffee and entertainment. Choose from; Silent Disco Party Night If you are looking something fun, but a bit different the silent disco is definitely it. After dinner, you will receive a set of headphones, but not a regular set, these have 3 different channels. At a flick of a switch, you will be able to change from listening to the resident party DJ who is in the room, dancefloor favourites or Christmas classics. Retro Party Night If a traditional Christmas is more your thing, then at the Retro Party Night you will enjoy the best sounds of the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s throughout the evening. The perfect opportunity to show off your best dance moves! Both parties are from £29.95 per person. Make a Night of It Why leave the party early, especially when it’s in full swing and risk trains being
cancelled or paying high taxi fares? If you book to attend any of the Christmas events a discounted stay in one of the 4* quality large spacious rooms, can be organised for you. Whatever your plans are this Christmas in Cardiff, whether it’s a girly get together, reunion with friends, night out with colleagues or a lunch with family, the spacious bedrooms can help to keep the festivities going, especially with exclusive bed and breakfast rates. Sunday Lunch with Santa Every child deserves to feel the magic of Christmas. With this in mind, our friend Father Christmas is coming to visit. Put on your Christmas jumper and spend some time with the family with a 3-course meal followed by a family disco as well as a visit to see Santa in his grotto. Like with all of Future Inns menu’s, under ‘5’s can attend free of charge. Lunch, dinner and afternoon tea A festive lunch or dinner can be booked in Thomas Restaurant. These are ideal for celebrating with friends, family or colleagues. As always, the food is homemade on-site using fresh and local

ith the evenings getting darker and summer drawing to a close, it’s time to think about updating your home for Autumn, but transitioning into the colder seasons needn’t mean a complete style overhaul – a pop of colour can be all it takes to brighten up both your space and mood. What better way to inject some vibrancy than with the bold creations of Brazilian pop artist, Romero Britto, available at Castle Fine Art in Grand Arcade, St David’s, Dewi Sant. Britto’s array of original and handembellished limited edition paintings and sculptures have been said by the New York

A firm believer in the role of an artist as an agent of positive change, Britto is committed to developing and supporting the powerful role art plays in world issues. He focuses his philanthropic efforts in engaging children in arts education literacy programmes and - through his namesake company Britto Central, Inc. - donates time, art and resources to more than 250 charitable organisations.
Times to exude “warmth, optimism and love.”. His signature style brings a blast of Latin energy, striking primary colours and an optimistic outlook on life that is guaranteed to make you smile. The charismatic artist’s sculpture collection was a natural progression from canvas, and has seen him explore similar themes to the print collection for which he has become widely known. Primarily constructed in enamel and iron, the sculptures employ a wide palette of bright and bold colours, and are stunning examples of the very best of Britto’s technique and style. ‘Brazilian-born and Miami-made’, Britto was self-taught at an early age, before he was encouraged to travel to the United States where Pop Art was flourishing. With an unshakable resolve and belief in his own art, the artist spent the next few years exhibiting and attracting the attention of many. He then travelled to Paris, where he was introduced to the works of Matisse and Picasso, which influenced him to create his own iconic style before his career took him to Miami, where he was selected alongside Andy Warhol for Absolut Vodka’s artist showcase.
Speaking about his work, Romero Britto says: “Art can make you look at something in an exciting and totally different way. It can give you the power to fly. “My art is about love, celebration, joy, happiness and creating a beautiful energy. I get my inspiration from simple things in life – from beautiful things that happen in life, that make me happy and leave me inspired.” Today, his work is widely celebrated and has captivated audiences worldwide, having been exhibited in 30 countries across four

treatments at Organic Beauty House Organic Beauty House is an award-winning skincare studio based in Glebe Street, Penarth. When it comes to offering clients innovative treatments, using the latest treatments in science and technology, look no further than Emma Bowen. The founder of Organic Beauty House was the first to bring the popular Dermaplaning treatment to Wales, so you can be assured you’re in experienced hands. Dermaplaning is one of the most requested treatments that Emma performs. Classed as a deep exfoliation using a surgical scalpel, Dermaplaning removes fine hairs which are known for trapping dirt, oil and dead skin cells in your pores that are the main cause of acne and blemishes. As there is no downtime with this treatment, it is great to have before a night out or special occasion, which will allow your makeup application to go on like a dream!
Emma Bowen has been in the skincare industry since 2009 starting Organic Beauty House based in Penarth, specialising in treatments that use the body’s own ability to renew and rejuvenate itself. Contact Emma on organicbeautyhouse@yahoo.co.uk or on Facebook at organicbeautyhouse.co.uk. Website www.obhpenarth.co.uk One of the biggest misconceptions about Dermaplaning is that the facial hair will grow back thicker, but this is not the case. Hair regrowth takes approximately 4 weeks to return exactly as it was before the treatment.
Another popular treatment that is requested at Organic Beauty House is High Frequency. High Frequency is an alternating current delivered through a glass electrode that promotes circulation and oxygen for the blood vessels and tissue. This reaction causes a natural contraction of underlying blood vessels and tiny muscle groups which push away toxins while your cells are enriched with nutrients. This creates cell renewal that aids in the support of increased levels of collagen and elastin. High Frequency is also very beneficial for skin types prone to acne and breakouts as it kills the bacteria, inflammation and leaves a germicide finish on the skin, this heals the acne and prevents breakouts. It is a great allround treatment with a multitude of benefits! On your first appointment, you will experience a full diagnostic scan where you get to glimpse into the future of your skin and see exactly what’s going on underneath. The scanning machine will pick up on dehydration issues, thinning skin and sun damage, meaning you can treat any concerns even before they show.

A proud son of the South Wales Valleys, Stephen Truelove is a mindset coach with 18 years experience, author of A Journey of Discovery and Self-Learning and developer of the Love Life Love You process - Breaking Limitations. He has experienced the highest highs and lowest lows of life and now works with people to tackle anxiety, depression, phobias and other limiting mindsets. In his column he shares his life story, advice and goals for the future.
Here’s looking at you The truth about hypnotherapy
M
By Mindset Coach Stephen Truelove any otherwise quite rational people would run a mile from this most gentle form of therapy, so it’s worth taking a moment to look at the myths and the facts behind it.
So it’s not a matter of “Look into my eyes and I’ll have you in my power”? Absolutely not. A whole mythology has built up because the most visible practitioners are the showmen, the music hall turns, the sensation seekers. People remember seeing fellow holidaymakers running around on stage in their underclothes clucking like chickens, or they think of fictional characters like Svengali and worry that they will be brainwashed or worse. People fear losing control, making fools of themselves, but actually hypnotherapy is a way of helping you take back control: if you’re blocked from doing what you want by shyness or anxiety, who is in control – you or the anxiety?
What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy? Hypnosis is simply an altered state of heightened awareness. Hypnotherapy means healing through hypnosis, whether the condition treated is physical or emotional.
then you won’t change. But if you really want to change an unhelpful pattern of behaviour, then hypnotherapy can probably help.
Can anyone go into trance? If you’ve ever been told to pay attention and stop daydreaming, if you’ve ever had no idea what someone just said because you were miles away, off with the fairies, in a world of your own, then you can go into trance. That’s all it is. And there’s no way you can get “stuck” in trance – you can come out of it whenever you wish. Even if you fall asleep you’ll wake up perfectly normally afterwards.
How does it work? Some behaviour is hardwired into our genetic code, but much of the behaviour of warm-blooded species such as ours is learned, initially from parents and later from experience. Most early learning is buried deep and generally pretty essential, but some may be no longer relevant or even downright unhelpful. As young children we may misinterpret experiences and lay down wrong instructions for the future, or so much may have changed that the instructions no longer fit the situation.
Can you make me do things I don’t want to do? No, you’re always in control, you’ll hear and understand everything that’s said and you can never be made to do anything against your own wishes and values. If you’ve turned up because someone else wants to change you but you’re happy as you are,
If you drive with a Satnav that has never been updated, you may find yourself in deep water or facing a brick wall instead of the road to your destination. It’s easy enough to update the Satnav, but how to access programmes laid down when we were very young? That’s where hypnotherapy comes in, taking you into a deeply relaxed state to
50
COLUMN help you reprogramme your subconscious and become the best possible version of yourself. So what is the subconscious mind and how do we reach it to reprogramme it? The conscious mind is logical and analytical while the subconscious is non-logical and non-analytical but knows all about us from way back: people we’ve met, good and bad experiences we’ve had, everything. Have you ever been in two minds about a decision, had a hunch that things are not as they seem? Something tells you it won’t work, so you’re half-hearted about the whole idea. That’s probably your subconscious trying to warn you, though your conscious mind may try to dismiss the message if you can’t explain it “logically”. Often the gut reaction turns out to be right, but if a wrong instruction has been laid down earlier in life – “All brown-eyed women are treacherous”, or “You’ll never pass an exam” – based on one bad experience or even just one misunderstood experience, you may go through life missing out on happiness and success because you’ve set up your own subconscious limitations. Remember, the subconscious is always positive, even if it is sometimes positively wrong about things. Trying to re-programme it with “I’m not scared” won’t work because all the subconscious will hear is “scared”. To see what I mean, tell yourself not to think of a blue cat – you’ll start thinking of exactly that. For positive change we need positive images. Tell yourself “I’m feeling really confident” and visualise yourself behaving that way. But it will only work if you really want it to work. If for some long buried reason you’re holding on to your fear we may need to delve a little deeper to find the real block and you may then find a whole lot of things come right. So we’re back to removing limitations again? How do you actually do it? Yes, removing limitations is at the heart of all my work. First, we have a chat about what seems to be the issue. It may be something straightforward like fear of flying or it may be a deep sense of failure or guilt that just won’t seem to budge. When you’re ready, you move into a relaxed, dreamy state where we can work on any subconscious blocks that need to be shifted. But only if you want to. If you’re at all unhappy at any point, we can use a different therapy or just
associated with dementia. Isolation and unfamiliar surroundings add to distress and confusion. Hypnotherapy can reduce night panics and the need for sedation, thus increasing sociability which in itself can work wonders. Does hypnotherapy work with children? Yes, children often make very rapid progress as the problems are less deeply buried. Fear of the dark, the stress of parental death or divorce, lack of confidence, anger, poor concentration, all respond well. We can’t bring divorced parents back together, but we can work to remove the insecurity and even terror a child may feel if their home suddenly falls apart and a beloved parent disappears.

stop. If you prefer, the initial chat (for which there is no charge) can be in a neutral place and you are always welcome to bring along a friend or family member. What kind of conditions can be helped by hypnotherapy? Anxiety, depression, eating disorders, lack of confidence, post-traumatic stress, sleep problems, stress, weight management, a whole range of things. What about serious illness or severe pain? We can make a significant difference by reducing anxiety, frustration and other emotional reactions, particularly with experiences such as childbirth, dental work, etc where fear of pain may play a significant role. Wherever fear or stress is a factor, hypnotherapy can help, even for people with a terminal diagnosis and their families. Is there anything that can’t be changed? You can’t reverse a major stroke or alter a person’s basic personality, but anyone can be helped to adapt and become the best possible version of themselves within that situation. You won’t make a professional footballer out of a couch-bound 40-year-old, but you can help him get more exercise, lose a bit of weight and live a healthier life – perhaps even join an amateur football team. But only if he really wants to get off that sofa. What about Dementia? We don’t have a patent cure for Alzheimer’s, but we can relieve anxiety and depression
51
Have you ever been hypnotised? How does it feel? Many times. Like anyone else, I was quite scared the first time, but it is actually a wonderfully relaxed experience. One of my clients describes “a trance-like state of complete calmness with heightened focus and concentration. Afterwards I feel calm and in control, ready to face weekly challenges.” And another, “This is like cheating: I come into the room, relax in the chair and you talk to me – and when I leave things change and my life gets better.” What would you say is the most crucial factor in making hypnotherapy work? You must want to change and you must trust the person helping you. If you can say Yes to both those things you should have a good experience and make excellent progress. ----------------------Love Life Love You 36 West Bute Street, Cardiff Bay. Dr Rito Mitra Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Cardiff Hospital
t’s the 21st century and we have made giant leaps in managing heart conditions, but is it possible to live long with heart disease? Well it’s definitely possible to live longer than we used to but the key is early detection. A healthy heart should pump steadily and powerfully with good opening and closing of valves, the electrical ‘wires’ inside the heart should conduct well and blood should flow smoothly inside the ‘pipes’ (the coronary arteries) which sit on top of the heart. But what are the signs when these factors aren’t working? Dr Rito Mitra, Consultant Cardiologist, specialises in this area at Spire Cardiff Hospital and explains what the warning signs are. “People can experience breathlessness,

light-headedness and ankle swelling. With electrical heart rhythm problems, you can also have palpitations and/or fainting. Narrowing or blockages in the coronary arteries can lead to angina chest pains or heart attacks depending on its severity.”
52
Thumping of the heart or palpitations are a common complaint resulting in a consultation with a doctor. These can however simply be a normal phenomenon but are sometimes due to a number of underlying heart conditions most of which can be alarming but nonthreatening. Dr Rito Mitra explains, “We can all feel our heart pounding away when we have taken a couple of flights of stairs quickly but these palpitations are to be expected and are normal. Other types that we see are often described as slow, fast, missed beats, forceful or irregular. Breathlessness commonly comes from a heart or a lung problem. Pain coming from the heart is often felt as chest heaviness or tightness and can travel to other areas such as the arms, neck and jaw.” As we get older, heart disease gets more common, but some conditions can
SPIRE HOSPITAL accelerate the process. Typical risk factors include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and consuming too much alcohol in addition to factors such as certain ethnic origins. Sometimes heart disease can run in families. There are many tests to help diagnose these problems available at Spire Cardiff Hospital. The most common tests include a basic bedside ECG and echocardiography (an ultrasound scan of the heart). When investigating chest pain, Dr Mitra says, “There are different tests such as CT scans, treadmill tests or a coronary angiogram. Once a narrowing is found in the coronary arteries, it is treated either with tablets, open heart surgery or through microinvasive coronary angioplasty’’. “In angioplasty (slim tubes are passed usually via the wrist), the narrowings can be stretched open with balloons and metallic wire scaffoldings called stents keeping them propped open. Sometimes, if there are too
many narrowings, patients are referred for open heart bypass surgery where they essentially get a fresh new set of pipes!” A variety of heart rhythm monitors are available to detect electrical problems. Slow heart beats can be treated by the insertion of a pacemaker and complex rhythm issues are sometimes treated through wires/tubes being inserted through the groin called an ablation. Dr Mitra continues “At Spire Cardiff Hospital our heart team have expert equipment to help anyone who is experiencing symptoms which could be heart related. I strongly advise anyone who does have concerns to come forward and see a doctor – the quicker we can detect the problems, the better the long term planning but there is no reason to panic.” If you are concerned about any cardiac problems you should visit your GP or book an appointment with a specialist. uperheroes, video games & live theatre… It’s all going on!
Whenever writing this column, I always like to choose somewhere specific to articulate my thoughts and feelings. This time I have headed down to a small, rural beach near Malibu and have had to climb over several large boulders to find the perfect spot. I lost a bracelet, witnessed a poor dead, washed-up seal, and definitely did not put enough suntan lotion on... - but it was worth it! What has been going on?

COLUMN away the emotionally charged tears, I knew this was the movie I wanted to highlight in this column. We see Shia Labeouf team up with Dakota Johnson and breakthrough actor Zack Gottsagen to deliver a movie that will not only touch hearts across the world but pave a way for future actors with downsyndrome. Logline: After running away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a pro wrestler, a man who has Down syndrome befriends an outlaw who becomes his coach and ally. Hollywood Events & More!
An Audience With Jimmy Kimmel Event (2019) world premiere at The Hollywood Fringe Festival and went on to not only sell out but receive the critic’s ‘Double-Sweet’ award! Wrapping up on this show made me truly think of the emotional journey actors go through when creating characters from scratch. To choose their nuances, the rhythm of their dialogue, then slip into that skin and breathe physical life into them on stage. Then, when closing night comes, it kind of hits you. In a strange way, you are saying goodbye to a close friend. You lose a part of you that has been living inside you for months and it definitely hits your soul for a few weeks after. Perhaps when next watching your favorite TV show/ movie, have a think what the actor playing the role must feel like at the end of a day’s filming? Following from playing a flamboyant British narcissist on stage, it’s safe to say that this year is throwing all sorts at me! The job that I am currently working on is magical!
Actor Luca Malacrino recording at Warner Bros. Studio. Although I cannot say the name of it, (as I am sure terrible things will happen to me) I can tell you that it is a video game for a well-known franchise. It shoots on the Warner Bros. lot and for the last two weeks, I have had to push myself in finding this character. He is a Spanish teenager with the perfect amount of sass. Imagine green suits with white dots, some of the most awkward noises possible, and allow your imagination to run wild. I will be releasing more information on what it is and its release date soon on social media! To Watch: Peanut Butter Falcon As soon as this movie finished, while wiping

This year was my first ever trip to ComicCon! My good friend Roxy Striar was kind enough to show me the ins and outs of the super-hero empire! From cool, limited merchandise to some of the best costumes I have ever seen, Comic-Con was greater than I could have ever imagined! As well as caped heroes, I was lucky enough to attend a live taping of Jimmy Kimmel and the world premiere of 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. The Jimmy Kimmel taping was special as he was the one being interviewed! It was held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood and included special guests Norman Lear & Anthony Anderson. The hit shark sequel premiered at the Regency Theatre and definitely made me jump and cheer in all the ways a shark movie should! The red carpet saw many stars, including father and daughter duos: Sylvester & Sistine Stallone and Jamie & Corinne Fox. This column’s helpful habit is Meditation. I feel like meditation is something that has become a lot more popular as of recent and is something that has seriously helped me with stress and focus. If you have thought about trying it or have heard friends talk about it, I urge you to give it a go! I use a free app called Insight Timer. Whether you’re looking for a quick 10-minute breathing exercise, or an evening meditation to help with sleep, the app has everything you need. Luca Malacrino, over and out. JOEL WILLIAMS
Joel Williams
J
From Big Brother to Politics, the Councillor for North Cardiff shares all
oel Williams is a Conservative Party Politician and Cardiff resident. Born and bred in Cardiff, Joel is a County Councillor and Welsh Assembly Candidate. Joel took part in the 16th Series of Big Brother in 2015 and exited the show after 10 weeks as Runner-Up. Joel answered some questions on various subjects so we (and you) can get to know him better. Joel- you were born and raised in Cardiff, tell us more? Born at the Heath Hospital I’ve lived in Cardiff all my life. I went to St Mellons Primary School in Llanrumney and St Teilo’s Secondary School in Penylan. Dad is a teacher and mum is a trade union official and they’ve taught me from a young age the importance of hard work and public service. You’ve been involved in politics for a long time, what got you into it? I joined the Conservative Party back in 2010 just before the General Election. Although I was very young at the time, I felt it was wrong to just stand on the sidelines and be critical. I wanted to make a difference in my community and figured I could do that by getting involved.
Describe yourself as a child in 3 words? Inquisitive, naughty and persistent You were on Big Brother in 2015, what was the reason for you deciding to take part in the show? I took part in the 16th series of Big Brother in 2015 and ended up in the House for 10 weeks, finishing as runner-up. I wanted the public to know that I have flaws and
60
everyone in politics has flaws. I wanted people to see me for who I was without any veneer. What do you do in your spare time? I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and love pizza- so wherever possible I try and combine the two! I enjoy playing sports and have played chess since a young age; although, I’ve become a little rusty.
INTERVIEW Why are you standing for election to the National Assembly? When I was considering whether to put my name forward to stand for Cardiff North in 2021 there were several factors I considered. Perhaps the most important (at least for me) is that I believe Wales’ best years are ahead of it and the same for our great City and Cardiff North but I also believe that Wales is at a crossroad. And by that, I mean socially and economically. There is so much more politicians can do for our Country and I believe I can play a part in making the lives of people and communities, in not only Cardiff North, but across Wales, better.
Are you involved in any charitable organisations? Supporting local charities and organisations is important to me and although I may not be able to give significantly financially, I do give my time to support some charities in Cardiff. I’ve been a trustee of Diverse Cymru and a member of the Board of Management for Cartref Care Homes. Both these organisations give so much to our communities and I’ll do everything I can to support. What is your dream job? People who know me will know there can only be one answer to that question for me: Prime Minister. Politics is in a bit of a mess at the moment, isn’t it? Wherever I go people are talking about politics and it’s good that people want to engage with politics, as it wasn’t that long ago that people died to give working people the vote and we should never forget the
sacrifice our ancestors made to better our future. But yes, things are messy at the moment and I hope we can move on from BREXIT, as there are so many important domestic issues we should be focussing on. You are currently a Cardiff Councillor; do you enjoy this role? I love it! It’s a very busy and varied role but I enjoy the variety. I represent Pontprennau and Old St Mellons in Cardiff North and we’re one of the fastest-growing communities in Wales. You meet so many different people in politics and that’s great. What’s it like running a small business? I set up my business when I was 16 years old, it involves marketing businesses by way of print advertising. My business gives me such an insight into small and mediumsized businesses and this is something I have sought to take into politics. My experience in business has taught me that confidence is important.

Do you have a favourite snack? I’m currently going through a phase of eating mini popadoms with Milka chocolate. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Where do you hope to be in 5yrs time? Back in November 2018, I was selected to be the candidate for Cardiff North for the 2021 Welsh Assembly Elections. I’m excited and relish the opportunity to fight for residents and communities of Cardiff North. I’m privileged to have a great team around me and am thankful for all the support from residents and supporters. So in 5 years, I want to be representing residents in the Constituency where I have lived all my life- Cardiff North.

LITERARY LIFE
Monmouth-born Saul David is a historian, novelist and broadcaster. His many critically acclaimed history books include The Indian Mutiny (shortlisted for the Westminster Medal for Military Literature), Zulu (a Waterstone’s Military History Book of the Year) and Operation Thunderbolt (an Amazon History Book of the Year.)
Talking bestsellers, blockbusters and the books that inspired him to become a writer B y S A U L DAV I D
MY NEWS I’m just back from a whirlwind trip to the US: to launch my new book The Force: The Legendary Special Ops Unit and WW2’s Mission Impossible (Hachette Books, $28), and to research a follow-up, a Band of Brothers set in the Pacific War. I bounced between New York, Washington DC, Auburn in Alabama (where I experienced the extraordinary spectacle of a college football game, complete with tailgating), and back to New York for an early morning live interview on Fox News. Exhausting, but worth it.
CLASSIC FICTION
More of a marathon than a sprint, Anthony Powell’s brilliant 12-part saga of life in mid 20th Century England – A Dance to the Music of Time – has been rightly praised by critics as one of the finest series of novels ever written. Inspired by Nicholas Poussin’s painting of the same name, it’s a comic examination of class, power and war, told through the eyes of narrator Nick Jenkins. Start with the first volume of 3 books, Spring (Arrow, £20) and keep going if it grabs you. It will.
FACTUAL FAVOURITE
More of a hybrid than straight non-fiction, Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood (Penguin Classics, £6.99) details the murders of four members of the same family in the farming community of Holcomb, Kansas, in 1959. Capote and childhood friend Harper Lee, later author of the bestselling classic To Kill a Mockingbird, conducted their research in Holcomb even before the murderers were arrested. Praised for its elegant prose, forensic detail and triple narrative structure – in which the killers, their victims, and the community are all described – the book contains fictionalized passages that are not to everyone’s liking. But there is no denying its emotional impact.

BOOK OF THE MOMENT
Originally titled The Brothers, Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon (Oxford, £4.99) - the very loose basis for Andrew Davies’s recent ITV drama adaption of the same name – centres on the fortunes of Charlotte Heywood, the eldest daughter of a well to do Sussex family. The plot hinges on Charlotte travelling to the small fishing village of Sanditon, an unpretentious location that two of her acquaintances, Mr Parker and Lady Denham, hope to transform into a fashionable seaside resort. It contains the usual Austen themes of social-climbing, identity, manners and greed, but stops abruptly at chapter eleven before Parker’s siblings, the worst perpetrators, have got their just deserts.
THE BOOK CONTAINS fictionalized passages that are not TO EVERYONE’S LIKING.

IN THE NEWS
One of the most eagerly awaited literary events of recent years was the midnight launch of Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments (Chatto and Windus, £20), the sequel to her award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale, the grim story of fertile women forced to provide children for the elite of a dystopian theocracy. Hundreds of fans queued to attend the London party and meet the 79-year-old Canadian author. Early reviews are positive. “Atwood’s task,” writes The Guardian, “in returning to the world of her best-known work was a big one, but the result is a success that more than justifies her Booker prize shortlisting.”

Are you feeling the September slump?
N
ot sure about all the Style of the City readers but I am feeling slightly perplexed about September. Normally after the school holidays, week one/two of September is busy, you’ve been waiting to get your teeth back into the job in hand and are literally chomping at the bite to start getting some deals under your belt. This year September has felt different, its struggled to get off the ground, basically, it did not pick up until week three. I’m struggling to see why the change… when most people may think …it’s only a week or two! And I agree… however, when you have been doing a job for more than 3 years you have a pretty good idea of what and when things are going to happen and what the norm is as its very much the same every year a subtle change will strike you as odd…… especially in Sales. We are creatures of habit, to feel each day of September ebbing away when you have been waiting for it since July is very painful in Sales. The month of September is the first month of the last quarter, in December everyone starts to wind down for Christmas so every day of September, October and November is essential. I hate to mention the B-word as I don’t
Business columnist Tracey Holloway started her career as a buyer with Sony UK and appreciates all the disciplines that Sony taught her for the 20 years that she was with them. Moving on to be a buyer for British Airways to sample the tastes of the aviation industry, the role took her to many corners of the world for nearly 10 years. Now after 10 years at Office Space in Town Ltd and as Quality and Standards Director for the past 4 years, Tracey feels settled and comfortable to share all her business experiences. believe we should let this issue define what we do on a daily basis; however, I am starting to think that this is the reason for the September slump. I have spoken to my work colleagues and they are feeling the September slump too. My advice would be:• Focus on the good relationships you have made over the years • Ensure you Network as much as possible (it’s always good to know what is happening around you) • Work every lead you get because someone else will. • Create leads yourself don’t wait for them to

You jump onto Rightmove or Zoopla and start scrolling through homes online (It’s great fun). However, one of the huge differences about the service is the stunning marketing. Take a look at their homes for sale and you will notice that every room has been styled and curated and then photographed by a wonderful photographer.
