ACTORS WHO’VE

CRITICIZED THEIR OWN FILMS

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST STARS AND THE MOVIES THEY WOULD LIKE TO FORGET

No one is immune to feelings of regret and this is true even for Hollywood’s elite. When it comes to projects that some actors wish they could erase from history, you may be surprised to see quite a few films you love on the list. While some actors hate to watch themselves in any movie regardless of the quality, these stars in particular more simply just regret being talked into an awful role...and they weren’t afraid to say so.

VIOLA DAVIS VS. THE HELP In a 2018 interview with The New York Times concerning her past challenges and regrets, Viola Davis spoke about how she regretted her role in The Help. The movie follows a white woman writing a book about the lives of Black maids working in Mississippi in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. Davis offered some clarification to her comments saying that it wasn’t her collaborators that made her regret her decision, but rather the content of the film itself as she felt it did not accurately capture the black experience

RICHARD GERE VS. PRETTY WOMAN Careful ladies, this one is going to sting! In an interview with Woman’s Day back in 2012, Richard Gere tore apart the chick flick classic Pretty Woman by referring to it as a “silly rom-com” even though the film made Gere a household name and saw Julia Roberts become ‘America’s Sweetheart.’ To be fair, Gere only hated the film because he felt that it wrongly glamorized Wall Street-type men.

ALEC GUINNESS VS. STAR WARS It may seem unbelievable that anyone could regret being in what is likely the most recognized trilogy in the world, but it appears that Alec Guinness is the exception. On multiple occasions, the actor has expressed regret for playing ObiWan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy. He felt that the film was “fairy tale rubbish” and called the dialogue “lamentable.” He didn’t hold back in his resentment saying, “Apart from the money, I regret having embarked on the film.”

SHIA LEBEOUF VS. HIS ENTIRE FILMOGRAPHY There’s a popular saying to not “bite the hand that feeds you,” but it appears that Shia LaBeouf may be a little unfamiliar with the phrase. The successful actor has spoken out in numerous interviews about every single one of his blockbuster roles from the last decade. He especially had regrets for his participation in films like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, saying that the films lacked heart and “dropped the ball.” Harrison Ford, LaBeouf’s co-star and Mr. Indiana Jones himself, commented on the shock revelation calling LaBeouf “a f***ing idiot.”

HALLE BERRY VS. CATWOMAN After making history as the first black woman to win a best actress Oscar for Monster’s Ball, Halle Berry took her career in a completely different direction and went on to star in the widely criticized Catwoman. Not only did the film have nothing to do with the Batman universe, it was so bad that she was even nominated for Worst Actress at the Razzies. Berry was a good sport about the nomination and showed up in person to accept her award saying, “First of all I want to thank Warner Brothers. Thank you for putting me in a piece of sh*t, God awful movie. It was just what my career needed.”

ROBERT PATTINSON VS. THE TWILIGHT SAGA Speaking of the Batman universe, before he was dominating 2022 box office sales as Bruce Wayne in The Batman, Robert Pattingson was only famous for playing the sparkly vampire Edward Cullen. Unfortunately for all you Twilight Saga fans, Pattinson was a closeted hater of the franchise even before accepting the role that put him on the map, but he certainly hasn’t been too shy to speak about his regret since. In fact, 5 minutes on YouTube is all you need to find numerous clips of Pattinson ripping into Twilight and Stephanie Meyers at various press interviews,

GEORGE CLOONEY VS. BATMAN & ROBIN Long before Pattinson’s The Batman, there was the 1997 film Batman & Robin. Joel Schumacher’s contribution to the “Batman” franchise quickly became an ongoing joke within film circles, and George Clooney has been more than happy to join in on the mockery. In a 2011 interview with Total Film, George Clooney admitted that the film was a pile of hot trash by saying, “With hindsight it’s easy to look back at this and go ‘Woah, that was really s*** and I was really bad in it.’”

JACKIE CHAN VS. RUSH HOUR Okay, I have to admit that it was hard not to take this one personally as Rush Hour is one of my all-time favorite comedies, but apparently Jackie Chan doesn’t agree with me! Chan spoke of his Rush Hour films saying, “When we finished filming, I felt very disappointed because it was a movie I didn’t appreciate and I did not like the action scenes involved. I felt the style of action was too Americanized and I didn’t understand the American humor.”
