The character of a man is not measured by how many times he gets knocked down but by how many times he gets back up. When looking for the person that exemplifies this, it was an easy fix to find the right candidate for our cover story.

A controversial figure that has had everything but the kitchen sink thrown at him and still wakes up the next morning looking for the next fight. When asked why doesn’t he stay down, he only replies “Because that’s what they want me to do!” Against all odds you will find, ‘The Fighter’, Erin Ferguson.

Our most recent issue ‘The Bay 3’ invaded the shores of The Abacos, Bahamas to put on display 15 of the best bodies in the region coupled with pristine beaches and calm waters as its back drop.

The late Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of the most revered AfricanAmerican neo-Expressionist artists to put a brush to an easel has been experiencing resurgence in popularity as of late. It is said that Basquiat focused on suggestive dichotomies, such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience.

This can be seen in his work, which was often messy with a purpose as the artist struggle to cement his existence within the world. Born in 1968 in Brooklyn, New York to Puerto Rican and Haitian parents, Jean Michel-Basquiat was plunged into the art world by his mother at a very young age. He was an extremely gifted student and was able to speak and write in Spanish, French and English by the age of 11.

Basquiat used his prolific works to speak about systemic oppression and colonialism. Despite his early academic success, school was not for Basquiat and he dropped out of high school at the age of 15.

Basquiat’s early works were in collaboration with his friend Al Diaz; they operated under the pseudonym SAMO and were usually spray painted on to the side of buildings. It was these early works that got Basquiat noticed by New York’s influential movers and shakers like Glenn O’Brien and Andy Warhol. Basquiat’s artistic ambitions were not just relegated to a paintbrush and easel however. He was also featured in a few films as well as being a member of the band Gray.

It wasn’t until 1981 when Basquiat’s career truly exploded. A crucial source of reference used by Basquiat throughout his career was the book ‘Gray’s Anatomy’, which his mother gave to him while he was in the hospital at age seven. It remained influential in his depictions of internal human anatomy, and in its mixture of image and text, which was prominent in Basquiats works. He went on to collaborate on a series of paintings entitled Olympic Rings 1985) with the late, great Andy Warhol. Unfortunately, in 1987 after the death of his good friend Andy Warhol, Basquiat became increasingly depressed and turned to heroine to cope. Jean-Michel died in 1988 at the pinnacle of his career after a heroine overdose. Basquiat was just beginning to grapple with the contradictions of success and his humble, urban beginnings when he met his untimely demise.

Nowadays the spirit of Basquiat has seen a recent revival as many musicians and designers are referencing him in their works. Artists like Lil Wayne, Macklemore, A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, J.Cole and others have paid homage to the late artist. Jay-Z referenced Basquiat quite prominently on his new album ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail especially on tracks like Picasso Baby where Jay states ““I’m the new Jean-Michel,” Its clear that Jean-Michel Basquiat legacy continues to live on as a new generation becomes familiar with his work.

For example, I will “slump “for a day or two, and then that’s it. I’m done with the feelings associated with that event. Some people require longer time, others a shorter amount of time.

moving on…?

I received a topic from the editor (it was quite ‘trapsy’) but I wanted to touch on something a little more inspiring so I decided to go with my gut instinct instead (#sorrynotsorry Barnes!) LOL maybe someone needs to read this in this format – I know I did.

Having experienced a low time recently where things just weren’t working in my favor, and the plans that I had and goals that I had set practically dissipated before my eyes, I found myself seeking to discover ways that I could really let go of hurt and regret, and move on from events that truly were beyond my control.

Now of course, this so-called “search” and “positive thinking” did not happen initially. To be honest, initially I was in the dark, lying down all day playing my finest sympathy/depression playlist. I’m pretty sure everyone has such a playlist, which may include but is not limited to – (my top pick) Abel aka The Weekend, Drake, Adele, and others. This playlist was a fine background noise to my timeshare purchase in Marvin’s Townhouses and Condominiums (that’s 4th level Marvin’s Room on the depression scale if anyone was wondering). It was truly just a dark and depressing time.

I’ve come to realize that this is the most essential part of moving on though. By allowing yourself to feel all the emotions that come along with the experience, whether it be pain, anger, sadness, frustration, whatever it may be… it can assist in helping you to get over the hump and move on faster.

It has taken me some time to get this as well BUT because you can become so focused on appearing strong and keeping up a façade for the world, you end up causing yourself more pain by internalizing rather than becoming and releasing. v. It is ok to be sad. It is ok to feel angry. Don’t let anyone tell you anything different.

It is ALSO equally as important to not allow yourself to feel these emotions for too long, for the benefit of your own mental and emotional health. You have to set a time limit.

Decide in your mind how long you need to get past what you

An important part of this is the part that people neglect, but need to remember. It is ok to distance yourself for a while from, well, pretty much everyone and everything, with the understanding that people will not understand. It may also become necessary to change the people around you. To quote, “Some people come into your life just to strengthen you, so you can move on without them. They are supposed to be part of your memory, not your destiny.” It is important to remember that if you have to compromise your happiness and potential for the people around you, you are in the wrong relationships. No one knows your personal experience, so they will feel some kind of way about you being missing in action or not as willing to do the things you wanted to do – #AndThatsOK. You owe no one an explanation but yourself, and true friends will realize something is wrong and will either try to help or give you your space.

You have to decide to focus only on what can be changed, with the realization that not everything deserves your time and energy. They say if you can’t change something, change the way you think about it. This is the time to focus inward by taking inventory on your mental, emotional and physical state. Perhaps you can begin an exercise regimen if you haven’t already, or start a new fitness goal. This is also the best time to make a list of things that you may need to change about yourself, attitudes and goals that may be hindering you from forward movement. Make a decision to attend conferences and seminars, to meet new people, learn a new hobby, start that business you was supposed to start from years ago, or try a new adventure. Inward searching can be done by spiritual strengthening, forging a deeper connection with whatever higher power you believe in and practice meditation, yoga, etc. Whatever it is you decide, this is the best time to do it.

Finally, focus on today. The cliché is that life is short, and we all know it is, especially those of us who have lost friends and loved ones. Your attitude towards every day is strictly your responsibility, and you cannot blame anyone else for how you decide to face your day. Being happy is a CONCIOUS DECISION that you have to make the minute you open your eyes in the morning. You can choose to be sour and a negative energy that sucks the life out of a room, or you can choose to be the light in the room and a positive source. Figure out what the next positive step is, no matter how small or difficult, and take it. Do what makes you happy.

Stars you are most compared to: I am most compared to India Arie and Rihanna. Two extremes, but I guess my looks and style of singing change that drastically every so often.

Turn on’s: A guy who dresses and carries himself well, a good cook is always a plus because I love food, fear of God and knowing the importance and power of prayer is important to me, a nice sense of humor, intelligence and drive is a must! Also, a great smile, confidence little sensitivity doesn’t hurt either, especially if there is a streak of bad boy somewhere. I like to dance (although I don’t think I’m any good at it) I love a guy who can dance so I can follow his lead. Finally, I am a huge romantic so a gentleman definitely turns me on.

Turns offs: Arrogance is a HUGE turn off for me, “No I don’t want no scrubs, A scrub is guy that can’t get no love from me”, A guy who is complacent and isn’t a dreamer automatically makes me want to run for the hills. I am a talker so if I am not stimulated intellectually…’turnt’ off!

If we were to raid your room right now what would we find?

Uhh, you’d probably find some snacks that I hid from myself, a lot of DVDs, makeup, lots of clothes and books including my purple Bible, a KFC mug, my Michael Jackson poster and of course lots of photos of my family and friends, (embarrassing ones too!)

Who or what is your greatest inspiration?

I am very easily inspired, whether its little things like encouraging words from people, seeing the sunrise in the morning, even watching Beyonce or India Arie’s live performances get to me. But the absolute greatest inspiration for me is my mother Ruthmae Rolle, strong, talented, poised,intelligent, ambitious, hardworking, a pace setter, independent and gorgeous!

What’s your biggest fear?

It’s sort of tough for me to really express that, but it would definitely be, for me to grow old and not be successful in the field of my passion thinking “I should’ve” or “What if ”.

Finish the sentence… what really makes me smile is….

What really makes me smile is when someone offers to take me for KFC or conch salad. Just kidding, it would definitely be knowing that I am making someone, somewhere proud. The idea of being an inspiration to others and using my talent to touch their lives and hearts gets me smiling for every time.

Alright… we all know we need to save a few pennies. That means cutting back on a few things *cough* clothes, shoes, accessories etc.. I know this might seem hard especially if you’re like me and always think you need a “new” outfit every time you go out. Wellll I have some advice that can spice your closet up a bit… are you ready?? DIY (Do It Yourself) it take something that sits in the back of your closet and become your own designer; you’d be surprise at how you can turn one plain tee into something fab.

I’m going to give you an idea that will take less than 15 mins to DIY (once you have the materials).

Project #1: Studded Shorts The great thing with studding any item of clothing is that it takes literally no time at all and can make something look brand new. I actually studded a few of my own clothing to give it an edgy look and it saved my pocket a few dollars.

What you will need: a pair of your old jean shorts and any shape or size studs (which you can find at Home Fabrics) How To DIY Studded Shorts: Lay out your studs where you want them to be placed. Your studs should have prongs that should poke easily into your shorts. When done studding if you want you can sew a piece a fabric over the back of the prongs just in case it feels uncomfortable against you skin.

PS: You can stud anything from your shorts to your tops. Let your mind run wild!

Miss Galaxy Bahamas Pageant the interview

I

had the opportunity to briefly interview the amazing Queens of the Miss Galaxy Bahamas Pageant. Each of these young ladies has given the true definition of beauty, both inside and out.

Shante McAlpin, Miss Galaxy Bahamas is a 27 year old, ambitious young woman. Determining to enter and excel in the field of Education, Shante has successfully established a preschool and is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Material Development.

Next we have Miss Teen Galaxy Bahamas, Aisha Jones, and 16, whose scholastic achievements are somewhat of a rarity these days. Aspiring to enter the Tourism Management profession, she has already been accepted into the College of the Bahamas. Then we have Jr. Miss Galaxy Bahamas, Alexis Dean, an active and vibrant 13 year old student of Anatol Rogers High School. This Junkanoo fanatic, determined from the tender age of 8 that she had what it took to be a pageant queen and has been competing ever since. Her tenacity is one to be admired and she hopes to show other young girls that they too can achieve any dream. Miss Pre-Teen Galaxy Bahamas, Manisha Charlton, may be my absolute favorite of all the interviewees. This vivacious little lady loves to do it all. She isn’t bothered or hindered by the fact that she’s just 11. She enjoys singing, dancing, baking and everything between. My favorite thing about her though… she’s aspiring to be a “SuperStar”. This tells me that regardless of the profession she chooses, she has resolved already to give it her all.

Go Manisha! Lastly, there is the charming Little Miss Galaxy Bahamas, Brinika Burrows. This 7 year old gem enjoys swimming and dancing (talk about perfect recipe for a great body). She also, loves competing on stage and hopes to teach other girls how to value and appreciate themselves.

I’ve been an avid follower of most of the local and international pageants and I must say that this particular pageant is by far one of the best. This pageant does not appear to be concerned only with the face and body of its contestants but also with the heart and mind. This is evident simply by looking at the reigning queens.

When I think about beauty pageants today, I think about the Nestle 100 Grand Chocolate Bar commercial.

You know, the one where the contestants are asked, “what would you do with $100,000?” The answers

ranged from buying puppies to sprinkling flower seeds all over the world. Well, the questions posed to our local contestants during any given pageant may not be the same, but the answers; I assure you are equally as shallow. I’ve heard contestants being asked about their aspirations or future endeavors, and no one seems to see beyond the potential crown. Everyone wants to be a “role model” for young women, teaching them to pursue their dreams. This is commendable, honestly.

But, shouldn’t we start by teaching our young girls to firstly have a dream? Teach them to know that it is okay to want to be something, anything, at all? The danger with taking a young woman that does not know or appreciate her own value and placing her in a pageant that emphasizes her physical qualities is that should she not win, as far as she’s concerned, her looks are just another feature that has failed her. Should she win, she runs the risk of believing that any future success can only be attained by flaunting her physical attributes.

I’m in no way anti-pageantry, but I am certainly against any organization or competition that does not teach young females to view themselves holistically but rather as ‘either, or’. Either you’re pretty or you’re smart, but you can’t be both.

Unlike most others, that I’m aware of, The Miss Galaxy Bahamas Pageant seeks out young women that may have their challenges, but they still possess some sense of who they are and they have an idea of who they would want to be, like Miss Pre-Teen, Super Star. The Pageant life only enhances their personalities and other attributes instead of creating a new identity for them.

When asked about future competitions, the answers were unanimous amongst the reigning queens…should time permit. Aside from their professional lives, school included, these young ladies are actually utilizing their platforms and are involved in different civic groups, some volunteering for non-profit organizations, others hosting and actively participating in different seminars and workshops.

Leftover food has been a staple in my house during childhood. For some reason, I enjoyed watching my mother turn a leftover meal into something hearty and enticing. Unfortunately nowadays due to the time constraint, technology and scorn, most households find it easier to just to throw leftovers away, dine out or just buy quick service food items.

These three Italian inspired recipes have transformed that non appetizing leftover meal into ways that not even Einstein could think of! Berry Smoothie (serves 2) Smoothies are a quick fix for any time of the day. It is also a great way to use up fruits and vegetables. And if made correctly can be healthy too.

Ingredients 2 very ripe frozen bananas (peeled) 1 C orange-pineapple juice 8 ounces fruit-flavored low-fat yogurt, 1/2 bag (8 ounces) frozen sliced strawberries Cut bananas into large chunks, about 4 pieces each. Place in blender container. Add remaining ingredients. Blend on medium-low speed or pulse until well blended. Stir midway through to mix well and make sure fruit is pureed. Serve at once.

Grilled Chicken Panini (Makes 2) Panini’s are an excellent choice for brunch because it’s so versatile and light as well. The leftover ingredients I used were chicken, vegetables and bread. Accompanied with a side salad, this sexy meal will have your co-workers drooling in envy.

Ingredients 1 each zucchini (grilled) 1 each bell peppers (roasted) 6 slices provolone cheese 2c chicken slices (grilled) 1c basil pesto 2 bunches arugula 1 French bread Slice French into thick slices spread each half with 1 tablespoon basil pesto. Cover bottom half of sandwich with roasted red peppers and zucchini and place 4 slices of chicken breast on top.

Place a slice provolone cheese over chicken slices and top with a small handful of arugula. Cover sandwich with top half of French bread and repeat with remaining sandwiches.

Banana Bread Pudding Go figure! This is an excellent dessert and crowd pleaser that is quite simple to make. Whoever thought the use of stale bread could be a good thing! You can also serve this with coffee icecream and caramel sauce.

Ingredients 3 eggs 2 yolks 1 teaspoon of cinnamon ½ teaspoon of nutmeg 2 mashed bananas 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¾ cup sugar 1/3 cup fine brown sugar 1 ¾ cups of whole milk (or heavy cream) 7 slices of a thick white bread (7 day old bread) Whisk the eggs and egg yolks together until frothy. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and mashed banana until everything is mixed evenly.

Add both of the sugars and whisk for 30 seconds. Finally, whisk in the milk and then add the pieces of bread that are already torn up. Stir slowly to ensure that all of the bread has absorbed the liquid (but don’t stir too much or the bread will decompose). Pour the mixture into an 8×8 in pan and let it sit for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees After allowing it to rest, put the pan into another bigger pan that has been filled with 1 inch of warm water (a water bath/bain Marie) Bake the pudding for 45 minutes. Make sure it isn’t liquidy when you take it out and you want it to be browned on top. While the pudding is cooling, make the Foster sauce and whip the whipping cream. To make the sauce, start by melting the butter in a heavy pan on a low heat.

When it is almost all melted, add the sugar and whisk. Add the rum or vanilla and allow the alcohol to evaporate (if you use rum it’ll catch on fire for a moment). Take the pan off the heat and slowly incorporate the cream. Spoon the sauce over the pudding and put a spoonful of whipped cream on top. Garnish with fresh sliced

Mini Frittata (Makes 12) Of course for my love of everything Italian, this flat Italian- style omelet is an easy way to start off the day or even can make a light brunch. Just add in any leftover vegetables, meats or cheeses.

Ingredients 10 large eggs ½ C cooked chicken (cut into cubes) 2 potatoes (cut into cubes) ¼ C onion (diced) ¼ C mozzarella cheese ½ C mushrooms (sliced) ½ C sun-dried tomatoes Salt and pepper to taste Extra- virgin olive oil 5 basil leaves In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Heat a tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil in a medium skillet and add the onions and mushrooms. Season and sauté until slightly browned, about 3 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.

Pour the eggs into a non-stick muffin tin. Sprinkle the leeks evenly into each eggy mixture. Then add meat, sun- dried tomatoes, cheese and oregano. Bake for about 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Checking at the 8-minute mark. (They should be puffed up and set in the middle)

Baked Ziti Pasta is another versatile dish that can be either cold or hot.

Adding endless arrays of ingredients is a wallet pleaser for sure!

For this all -in -one recipe, I used the leftover pasta from a spaghetti dish and some tomato sauce and re-created another version of a baked pasta delight

Ingredients 1 box Ziti pasta 1 26 oz. jar tomato sauce 4 C basil pesto 3/4 cup sour cream 6 cups baby spinach leaves 1 12 oz. jar artichokes (drained) 4 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese Heat oven to 350 degrees .Spray a 3-quart baking dish with non-stick cooking spray or lightly grease with butter. Heat the tomato sauce and add in fresh tomatoes. Set aside. In a small bowl, stir the basil pesto and sour cream together, and then set aside. Add pasta in large bowl then add spinach, drained artichokes, hot tomato sauce and then toss.

Add about half of the pasta and spinach mixture to the baking dish.

Then, spread the sour cream and pesto on top. Scatter about half of the shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the sour cream then add the rest of the pasta on top of that. Press everything down into the baking dish then scatter the rest of the mozzarella cheese on top. Bake for about 30 minutes or until cheese has melted and the sauce is bubbling. Cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

changed, taught him to fight. Erin’s family fought against the government and the Port Authority. They fought with business partners that didn’t take too kindly to the idea of a black man operating a business more efficiently than they were.

The fight Erin is facing now is more internal than external. After seeing a population of 1,000,000, almost 4 times that of the Bahamas, work with about 1% of the people governing and overseeing, Erin’s fight now is whether to see the same idea work here at home, or, continue with his own self development in other parts of the world. “The problems in this country are fixable and they are scalable.”

This has become Erin’s mantra. There is nothing wrong in the Bahamas that cannot be changed, the only questions is, who’s going to change it?

It is not my intention to turn this article into a Political Science paper, but it is my intention to, by some degree, incite an interest in change. There comes a point in the life of every adult when we must realize that there are some things we can do absolutely nothing about. We tend to live our lives based on extremes. Some people are overly concerned, to the point of being zealots for the things they cannot change. Others are completely apathetic about everything. Our lives become more balanced when the things we are passionate about are the things that can affect change in the lives of others.

I don’t need my politicians and Prime Minister to tell me how much they love me. What I need YOU to do is fix the institutions of this country so that they work for your children.

Forming a band can be a difficult or simple process, it all depends on the parties involved and from the out looking in one could tell that the band seemed to come together effortlessly and fit perfectly with Judah. Now with an instrumental team along for the ride Judah’s talents only rose higher into the line of sight for those seeking something new in the realm of sound.

Those present for his live shows with the band continue to get just that, something new, something different and dare I say….

If you haven’t heard of JudahThaLion yet, there’s a whole lot of music you’ve been missing out on. There is a whole lot of young talent making it’s way to the forefront these days and what I really like about it is the fact that this new triumphant force in music and the arts cannot be stopped. You just can’t deny real talent. With the thought of talent now still fresh in your mind, here are some fun facts about the Bahamian born and breed talent that is JudahThaLion.

The band spent time actually practicing and hanging out together becoming more and more of a family and less just people that performed together. With crowds loving the live shows the next step was giving the people something they could listen to away from shows. Now with Judah’s songwriting and singing abilities closing in on they’re peak the group took to the studio, recorded and released a demo project via their social media pages like ReverbNation.

Making his break onto the local music scene back in 2010/2011 with his song “Nassau Sunshine” the multi-talented artist has been making some great waves in an ocean of up n comers. Getting his start straight out of high school, he noticed that he’d grown a fondness for creating music and using it to express himself.

Continuing to do his shows with the band the itch every artist has to do something on they’re own grew in Judah and he began work on his first full length solo effort “Raw Talent”, a project he says embodies his music.

The mixtape has taken longer than a lot of people have expected but though it’s kind of hard for his building fan base to wait, it is totally understandable that a young artist like himself simple wants to correct and correct and adjust and adjust everything until it’s as close to perfect as he can get it.

One of the first moves for him was one that many artists take… sitting at home jotting down simple song ideas. Moving forward Judah found himself wanting to not only have these musical talents to himself but that they needed to be shown to the world.

Next move? Finding like-minded people. Judah took his talents among high school peers like former classmate “So Serious”, who is the founder of the New Providence based rap collective “Deep East”. This is where songs like “Nassau Sunshine” come into play. Under the moniker “Mr. Kris$”, Judah began to hone

During his recording process Judah has accomplished some awesome feats both with his band and as a solo act. Acquiring loads of colours to paint his songs on the canvas of brains with via his daily on-goings. He’s been apart of his first festival accompanied by his band, done concerts and performed side by side with artists like local rapper/entrepreneur R.A.P.P. Quelle and international friends like Trinidadian artist Jah Bami, released some insane singles like “Let Me Show You (A Wybe)” & “Tha Hypnotist” and also embarking on his first international

tour this year, dubbed #RawTour in reference to his upcoming project.

Did I mention Judah plans on releasing a documentary to complement his upcoming mix tape? No? Well he does, featuring some of the fun and spontaneous events that took places during his 2013 #RawTour experience.

So continue to be on the look out for this guy, he’s going to be doing some even bigger things in the coming months and years and be sure to check him out on Facebook, twitter and Instagram and like and follow his band’s page for updates on their next performance. The No-Hit Wonders Natural Wonders Over the years the local scene has seen its share of ups and downs in both nightlife and general entertainment. Taking notice of this, a few friends thought they’d try their hand in livening up the town a bit with the things they enjoyed; music, entertainment and all things subculture. Starting off in late 2011 with a few “secret” events, the owners of Stomping Ground Music Group, Woden’s Way Media & Slippery Kick came together to form the collective enterprise now known simply as “The No~Hit Wonders”.

From events like fashion shows and parties, to concerts, The No~Hit Wonders always try to introduce exciting events into the market. Most notably #TheSecretConcert. A show that brought together a variety of local bands and acts including NHWs managed theTruth band along with the atlantean band Cloudeater for their first international show and who’s front man Sam Dew has since gone on to work with artists like Wale, Rick Ross & Rihanna. The No~Hit Wonders have had their hands in all things entertainment and subculture and #TheSecretConcert has no doubt been their most successful event to date. So much so that the buzz from the show has nudged the Wonderers over the edge to begin planning for the next Secret Concert.

No dates have been set as yet but Wonderers say its definitely in the works.

Being not only a company built around events The No~Hit Wonders also pride themselves on being able to provide top of the line professional services ranging from event production consultation and promotions down to artist/act booking, music packaging/distribution and community based renewal projects.

Most recently NHW have had their hands full with a Californian tour and documentary for their up and coming artist JudahThaLion along with a hand full of summer series events like the NHW’s “Live At Twenty Five”, their “John Watlings Friday Happy Hour” Events and a few other things they’re keeping under wraps.

For those of you not familiar with the works of the NHW team, you can be assured that they are known for putting in the work and effort to make things turn out the way the need to.

Still a growing young company, it’s quite amazing some of the things this youthful team has ben able to accomplish is just a few short years. The team is becoming increasingly more and more sort after for their work in all areas of entertainment & subculture. Keep a watchful eye as you make your daily and nightly rounds, hitting up all the events you enjoy…you just may spot the NHW’s logo in some places you wouldn’t have expected.
