n June 20 – July 20 THE WORLD’S CULTURAL HERITAGE ALSO HOLDS TREASURES which we cannot enter. Time and again we have to breathe new life into them, for they are fleeting: the sounds of previous times. Music reaches us from the past like a message in a bottle full of emotions. The styriarte summer festival in Graz is dedicated to presenting these sounding treasures and bringing them to the stage at the highest artistic level in the most fascinating places in the towns and the countryside. That is what Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the spiritus rector of the festival and one of the few true stars among conductors, stands for. Each summer he returns to the town of his youth to realise his projects of the heart: the rediscovery of the great works of music which have often faded under the layer of habit and routine.
Every year the styriarte Festival explores a different theme, and 2014 it will be “under nature’s spell” as nature’s wonders have had a great influence on music history. Nikolaus Harnoncourt himself takes the audience back to the bewitched kingdom of the fairies and elves when he brings Henry Purcell’s great opera “The Fairy Queen” to the stage in an entirely new scenic production. From the romantic German forests in Weber’s “The Marksman” to the colourful Balkans in Jordi Savall’s musical history painting “Honey and Blood”: the festival audience has the most exciting discoveries to make. On the following pages you will find a selection of our programme. You can find the whole programme in English on www.styriarte.com. Or order our detailed brochure (only in German) via telephone 0043.316.825000 or via e-mail info@styriarte.com.
