message Dear St. Ursula Community, The 2013-14 school year has started and we are off to another great start. It amazes me how quickly time flies at St. Ursula Academy. It seems only yesterday when we bid our farewells to the class of 2013. These young women are prepared for college life and I am confident they are also committed to building a better world. It was 36 years ago when I left the halls of St. Ursula Academy. My four years at SUA were among my most memorable; in the classroom and out. I was blessed with patient and nurturing educators who took an interest in my academic growth and modeled for me the importance of personal excellence, balance and faith. I now realize this was no easy task since I was an exuberant teenager with an Piano class reminded me why we drop off our daughters at St. Ursula Academy,

Through pictures and artifacts, visitors can experience the Sisters’

This past spring I was given the incredible opportunity to revisit my SUA past by going back into the classroom in a special way. As sophomores at St. Ursula, my twin sister and I played the role of twins in a play called “Just Like Me”. The musical was written by our very own, Kathy Backherms ’73, who at the time was a student at the College of Mt. St. Joseph. Not only did she possess great

They are assisted by volunteers Kathy Beimesche ’62, Marie Caruso ’54 and the most recent volunteer, Janet Buchert Hirst ’67. These volunteers deserve our deepest gratitude, as their work is detailed, timeconsuming and never-ending. All alumnae of St. Ursula Academy, these women have organized, labeled, displayed and catalogued many treasures during their time in the Archives. They offer tours during each St. Ursula Academy Reunion weekend and spend time with the freshmen students each year during Heritage Days to give them some background about the history of their school. “I especially love the freshman tours,” said Semancik ’54. “The students are all so interested and enthusiastic!” These dedicated archivists love their work, but want to make sure credit is given to all those who came before them and started the work of protecting our history and committed to making it accessible and enjoyable

experiences and details about St. Ursula in their personal journals. Some of the most detailed were those of Mother Genevieve Glassmeyer, which talked in great detail about the early years of the Ursulines of Cincinnati. Those journals later helped fill in the details about the school and the convent’s history. While several of the Sisters kept their own journals and keepsakes, the first person to take on the role of archivist for the Ursulines was Sister Mary Paul Gieske ’38. Sr. Mary Paul says in her journals that she was unofficially asked to be historian for the community in the summer of 1971. In 1978, her role became

Despite years and years of work, the archivists are discovering new treasures and information all the time! Just recently, they discovered letters from Rookwood Pottery founder Maria Longworth Storer to several Presidents, including FDR!! Mrs. Storer and her husband, Bellamy, have a long, rich, history with St. Ursula and the Ursulines of Cincinnati and helped fund the building of the St. Ursula Chapel that we still enjoy today. This information and much more will be on display during the yearlong events scheduled for next year involving the connection of Maria Longworth Storer to the Ursulines of Cincinnati and St. Ursula Academy. You are invited and encouraged to attend all of the events listed at the end of this article. “Our Archives are a sacred space,” said Sister Jerome. “It is a treasure we want to pass on that is inspired by God but the work of human hands. We welcome all to share in our history.” To schedule a tour or to learn more about the Archives of the Ursuline Sisters, please contact archives@ursulinesofcincinnati.org or call (513) 961-3410 ext. 155. Students learn about the history of their school through visits to the Archives
While the Sisters’ Archives primarily reflect the history of the Ursulines of Cincinnati and their work, which included the Academy, work has begun to build a more detailed archive of the school as well. Alumna Pat McCormick Buckley ’68 is spearheading that effort. She is beginning to organize archival materials from the school including the theatre, athletics, academics, music and a beautiful collection of uniforms and graduation dresses from over the years. If you would like to get involved and volunteer to be part of this interesting and rewarding work in the school archives, please contact Mrs. Pat Buckley ’68 via email at patricia.a.buckley@gmail.com. 4
Maria Longworth Storer founded the Rookwood Pottery Company in 1880, not only to bring the art of pottery to Cincinnati but also to provide employment with a good wage to working women. Rookwood Pottery, recognized internationally as an example of fine art pottery, will be celebrated at the Keller Student Center at St. Ursula Academy on Saturday, March 1, 2014. Riley Humler, Rookwood expert, and Anita Ellis, Cincinnati Art Museum curator, will be available to identify and describe your Rookwood treasure. Academy over the next five years. We’ve identified ten challenges that are essential
On a daily basis, we see our students grow, develop their personalities and skills and chart their future paths. Confidence develops. Opinions form. Friendships are made. Goals are achieved – academic, social, spiritual, and co-curricular. In the end, young women emerge, ready to go on to the next step of their life journey, and in the process, make the world a better place. On the Board of Trustees, we see snapshots of the students. A presentation or a conversation by or with them about a topic we are discussing. A performance or an award they’ve achieved. Each interaction reinforces the common goal we all strive for – a successful experience for as many girls as possible into the future. We’ve made great progress this past year focusing on a Long Range Strategic Plan – identifying what we think are the most important issues to study. With our challenges set, we now begin the work to develop and implement solutions to ensure we achieve our goals. An example of a challenge that emerged through the process is “how do we continue to achieve academic excellence, consistent with our ideals, in a world that requires high levels of critical thinking and interaction, and utilize the opportunities available with the technology trends that
to ensure future success. Those challenges, and their possible solutions, resulted from many hours of study, discussion and participation by hundreds of faculty, staff, board members, parents, past parents and friends. As this plan unfolds, implementation groups will work on each of the challenges to fully develop and carry out the solutions. Thanks to all who have participated so far and will in the future. In addition to the Strategic Planning process, this year saw other positive developments for the Academy. We completed another strong year of communicating our message about the benefits of St. Ursula education, which resulted in a full freshman class starting this month. This is a great accomplishment, given the competitive nature of high school education in Cincinnati! This year also saw the Advancement department enhance a strong team focused on the future fundraising needs of the Academy. As we all are aware, a private high school education is a significant investment. We are fortunate to have a strong community of kind supporters who see the value of a St. Ursula education both for their girls and others in the future. We owe them all great thanks and a debt of gratitude for their generosity and support. Thank you.

Honor Roll of Donors
2012-2013
St. Ursula Academy has published the 2012-2013 Honor Roll of Donors to acknowledge and thank the thousands of people who have supported the mission of the Academy this school year. Donors listed in this Honor Roll made gifts between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. We are truly grateful for this incredible support. Without the generosity of our benefactors, the Academy would not be what it is today.
Thank you to the many parents, alumnae and friends who generously responded to our student callers during the annual SUA Phonathon. We are also deeply grateful to the committee members who dedicated their valuable time to call on fellow members of the SUA family. Every dollar donated makes a difference and is carefully allocated to help our nurturing Catholic educational community founded in the Ursuline tradition to encourage academic excellence and empower each student to become a woman of faith, integrity and courage committed to building a better world. 9

s part of the long range strategic planning process that commenced last year, various stakeholders reviewed our mission statement. The following
statement, which slightly modified the previous mission statement, resulted from the process: “St. Ursula Academy is a nurturing Catholic educational community founded in the Ursuline tradition. St. Ursula encourages academic excellence and empowers each student to become a woman of faith, integrity and courage committed to building a better world.” Among the many discussions that took place, the dialogue concerning the presence of the words “academic excellence” in the mission statement sparked my interest. If you ask current students and parents, past students and parents, or future students and parents to describe St. Ursula, you will most likely hear them speak about, among other things, the academic rigor of the school. Anne Ford Visits St. Ursula Academy
O
n April 9, St. Ursula Academy hosted Anne Ford, bestselling
author and national speaker on children with learning disabilities (LD), and co-author John-Richard Thompson. Ford spoke about the difficulties encountered while raising and educating a child with a learning disability, and offered hope and inspiration to those parents in attendance who were facing an LD diagnosis for their child. Ford and Thompson also signed books and conversed with parents to answer individual questions. They highlighted the importance of services that schools can provide to assist children with LD, and commended St. Ursula Academy and Educational Services (ES) Director Geri Walsh for creating Former St. Ursula Principal Fran Romweber, St. Ursula President Lelia Keefe Kramer ’77, Author and Speaker Anne Ford, Author and Speaker John-Richard Thompson

St. Ursula Hosts Leadership Conference for Students
S
t. Ursula Academy continues to focus on encouraging young women to become tomorrow’s leaders. That goal was evident
in the second annual Leadership Conference held on campus in March. The conference, which was open to all students, encouraged the young women in attendance to make smart decisions, manage difficult situations, and chase their dreams. The keynote speaker, Deborah Platt Majoras, talked to students about practicing their faith, living with integrity, and having the courage to take risks in whatever path they choose to pursue. Other presenters spoke on various topics ranging from being a leader to using social media to help achieve goals. This workshop An impressive list of speakers encouraged SUA students to make smart decisions and chase their dreams as they become the leaders of tomorrow. Food Lunch” was held in February in honor of Black History Month. Students, faculty, and staff enjoyed a homemade meal prepared by Parents of African American Daughters (PAAD) and Sisters in Cultural Unity (SICU). ham, greens, green beans, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato casserole, cornbread, and traditional desserts. The food was delicious and the lunch is a fun way to promote sisterhood and encourage students to be open to diverse cultures around them. Other exciting events sponsored by the Diversity Department this year included: • Bead for Life, which raised over $900 for assistance in Uganda • Annual Sisterhood Celebration, congratulating African American Graduates and welcoming African American Freshmen • SUA Hosted the Queen City Foundation R.A.I.S.E. Teen Diversity Summit whose attendees come from culturally diverse backgrounds. The focus of this event was to promote dialogue and cultural enrichment for multiple ethnicities • The Diversity Fashion and Talent Showcase where students shared their design work and performed on stage • In celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Diversity students hosted a Salad Bowl lunch which included discussion on the Asian Pacific culture.

Senior Tea 2013 T
he organizers of this year’s Senior Tea did a beautiful job of carrying on the longstanding tradition and
creating a beautiful space for this year’s event in the Harold C. Schott Gymnasium and Convocation Center. In SUA style, the students greeted their mothers, grandmothers, and sisters at the event. Then they enjoyed tea and some delicious bites as they laughed and talked with their guests. This remains an experience that is unique to St. Ursula and that so many alumnae have loved for decades!
