message Dear Community of St. Ursula Academy,
I
hope everyone enjoyed a peaceful and enjoyable summer. It was so quiet here without the exuberance the girls bring to St. Ursula. I certainly missed
them! At the school Mass in May our principal, Craig Maliborski, talked to the girls about how much they had changed and grown during the 2011-12 school year, and I told them how I had changed as well. My heart grew a thousand times as I experienced the joy and pride our students shared with the St. Ursula community and with me throughout the year. Seeing some of our students this summer at their workplaces, walking in the malls, playing sports, and eating at Skyline highlighted some of my summer days! The summer is a very busy time for the school staff working on summer camps for grade school girls; maintaining the buildings; and developing marketing, advancement and admission opportunities. The support staff and I are constantly searching for ways to use tuition dollars more prudently

The sole purpose of this Alliance is to raise money to help fill the gap for the families that need the extra funds to send their daughters to SUA. We also count on the proceeds from The SUA Ball and the Annual Fund to help afford this opportunity to every young woman who is qualified to attend our school. The gap for the 2012-13 school year is $1,743, meaning it costs $1,743 more to educate each student than we charge in

In conjunction with the publication of The Academy Alum in spring 2004, the SUA magazine has featured students, alumnae and topics that focus on the four roles that a graduate is ready to play in the world at graduation: thinker, leader, nurturer and prophet. In this issue, the feature article on page 2 honors those who make possible the Educational Services (ES) Program to St. Ursula students with learning disabilities. Whether thought hard work or financial support., they are true examples of nurturers and leaders for our school community. Later in the magazine, you will see examples of students, faculty and staff contributing to the family spirit in our school, showing a commitment to Christian service and a deep sense of responsibility to our community. They show respect for differences and diversity and are living examples of the power of hard work and tenacity.
The Academy Alum program is a model for alums as they measure their success after graduation and well into their future.

Educational Services (LD) Program
Turns 30!
“No words can describe what she has done for my life and the amount of confidence she had instilled in me in order to allow me to achieve.” SUA alumna Chelsey Lukens ’08 shared these powerful words about longtime Educational Services (LD) Program Coordinator Geri Walsh. In gratitude for the services Ms. Walsh provides to college preparatory students with learning challenges, Chelsey, along with her parents Joe and Kim, her sisters, Ashley and Heidi, and her brothers, Nathan and Roman, decided as a family to donate $250,000 to SUA in honor of Geri Walsh and the ES Program. Their generous gift created a fully endowed scholarship that will cover the additional fee required to participate in the ES program for future qualified students who need financial assistance in order to participate in the program. Kim Lukens and Chelsey Lukens, May Crowning 2008
St. Ursula Academy programming is designed to instill in all students a feeling of preparedness and confidence. In addition to the top college preparatory offerings, St. Ursula Academy is proud of its unique and empowering programming for talented young women with learning disabilities and challenges. The Educational Services (ES) Program (formerly called The LD Program) reaches the 30 year milestone this school year and continues to be led by its inspired founder, Geri Walsh. Since 1982, the ES/LD program has grown and helped hundreds of girls learn to achieve and succeed despite their learning hurdles.
St. Ursula’s student newspaper “The Light” profiled the then new program in 1983. At that time Ms. Walsh explained the new program. She said she understood that the girls accepted into the program would have “the intellectual ability to succeed in college prep-curriculum but have difficulty learning without special adjustments.” Every ES student who comes through the doors of St. Ursula is intelligent, talented and prepared to tackle and succeed in a college preparatory environment. These students just learn differently. Some take in information differently, others have

the ES Program.
Chelsey’s Story Chelsey Lukens’ story is not unfamiliar to other ES students. Chelsey began school, as all young children do, without knowing about the disabilities that would eventually put her in the position of being a sixth grader, reading at a third grade level. She continued to struggle academically through her elementary school years and entered ninth grade more than three years behind her peers. It was not until her freshman year at another high school that she was finally made aware of her specific learning challenges. “I was struggling a great deal because they didn’t have a program and I needed help more than ever. So my parents began to look around the area and they came up with St. Ursula,” said Chelsey.

Chelsey’s mom, Kim Lukens said “I knew SUA had a reputation as one of the strongest, most developed LD programs in an all-gender setting and I believed in that.” So, Chelsey, with full support of her family, made the difficult decision to change schools in order to receive the assistance she needed to catch up and begin to learn in her own unique way. Chelsey’s academic life finally turned around when she entered St. Ursula Academy’s Educational Services (LD) Program for students with learning disabilities in her sophomore year and began receiving the accommodations that have made her a successful student. “For an entire 80 minutes each day I was able to go upstairs and sit right by those teachers who knew my learning style and they were able to teach me the way I needed to be taught!” said Chelsey. “And I knew that all four of my LD teachers knew who I

where she was awarded a scholarship for her character and citizenship. Someday,
One of Chelsey’s favorite tools was playing with paper clips to help her stay focused. She says she must have used thousands and was never afraid to ask for more! “She felt so free to walk into that room and say ‘I don’t understand this’ in any subject and know she would get an answer that would work,” said mom Kim Lukens. “She was really helped by the highlighting, repetitions, extended time, and she felt respectshe was always treated as she was intelligent, because she was.”
she envisions working for educational reform for learning disabled students because she doesn’t want other children to go through what she went through. She currently works with autistic children and is empowered by the impact she knows she can make on these special children. “If I had not gone through this program, then I know for a fact I would not be becoming an autistic teacher,” said Chelsey. “Every day I see these autistic kids and it blows my mind that I am now the teacher. If I can be anything like a Ms. Walsh to

they chose to start a scholarship. They say the program was life changing. “Mere words cannot express my gratitude for the generosity of the Lukens for this gift. It will help so many girls,” said Ms. Walsh. ““There are a lot of wonderful people out there who just need a different ways to learn. It’s so much a part of their worth, purpose and intelligence and I want to help in whatever little way we can,” said Kim Lukens. “I can’t begin to express the gratitude we felt when we saw our daughter’s fullness grow in a short amount of time.” Chelsey has a message for other girls who may be struggling with learning disabilities. “I would say to other girls, ‘There is hope for you to achieve not only going to college but to become anything you want to be! Girls, I made it and I am still plugging along even though it’s not always easy.”

About the Educational Services Program Established in 1982, Saint Ursula Academy’s Educational Services Program for girls with learning disabilities and AD/HD exemplifies the school’s commitment to caring for the whole person and devising learning conditions for maximum achievement by each individual student in the program. The emphasis of the Educational Services Program is to provide for the individual learning differences and learning styles of the student by teaching to her strengths while working with her weaknesses or limitations. The student develops
Supporting the Educational Services Program The program has continued because there is a real need for the program. There are many bright, young women with learning challenges who need a school that will challenge them academically while providing a supportive environment that offers the services they need to succeed. The program had steadily grown over the years.
an understanding of her strengths, limitations, and learning styles, as well as her individual rights and responsibilities. Students in St. Ursula Academy’s Educational Services Program are mainstreamed into the college preparatory, honors, and Advanced Placement classes. The educational requirements of students in the Educational Services Program are identical to the educational requirements of their classmates. Program participants benefit from a number of special modifications and services.
Geri Walsh modestly gives credit to her team and their loving work for the success of the program. The ES Department today is staffed by Geri Walsh, Arielle Balz, Melissa Lea ’87, Barb Siegel, and Courtney Arling ’98. Walsh also cites some other reasons she believes the program has seen such success. “First, the program is rooted in the Ursuline characteristics of personal care for the individual and an emphasis on the development of the whole person. Secondly, the program has always had the support of the Ursuline sisters, the administration, and the faculty. Also, as the program has grown we have added faculty who are outstanding in content areas and in working individually with students and their learning disabilities.” If you would like to donate to the Geri Walsh / Educational Services Scholarship, please contact Judy Sandquist the St. Ursula Academy Advancement Department

Student Health Center and Fresh Market Open this month – The NEW St. Ursula Student Health Center Thanks to generous donors at the 2012 SUA Ball, enough money was raised through the “Fund a Need” request to build a much needed Student Health Center. The new health center is larger and much better able to meet the needs of the current student body. The previous space was a small cramped office with beds for just two students at a time. While we had great care, the space we used for the student health care room fell way short of the mark. The previous space had been set up as the
New Student Health Center
nurse’s room decades ago when the school was less than half the size it is today. “Sometimes, during flu season, there were at least 3 or 4 girls in here at the same time,” said recent graduate Kristen Traschel ’12. “Some needed to lay on yoga mats on the floor right in front of the door, and if someone else came in, the door hit their feet.” “We had outgrown it,” said SUA school nurse Robbie Russo. “The space for ill students was tight and the room for storage of medical equipment and supplies was also very cramped- making it challenging for me to offer the best care to our girls. The bathroom off of this room was also very small and insufficient for all of our needs.” SUA Nurse Robbie Russo assists senior Hannah Augsberber
A space was identified for a new Student Health Center—one that is very accessible to all of the students, unlike the current nurse’s office that requires climbing stairs from any direction. The new site was part of the technology help desk on the lower level in the main school building. It offers more space for students with three beds and privacy curtains, easy access to the connected restroom with a ramp, modern equipment and supplies, and better conditions
for the nurses to care for the students. It also offers a bigger and better bathroom space, plus immediate access to the back parking lot for anyone needing to be picked-up or in a rare case, for an ambulance.
Bulldog Fresh Market The students, faculty and staff have a great new option for lunch this year! The Bulldog Fresh Market opened the first week of school with healthy, balanced new options for a hot or cold lunch. Entrees include lean meats and whole grains and the sides are balanced to nourish bodies and minds. The goal is to provide great food for our school community that is fresh, healthy and delicious! The meals offered each day will be carefully planned to ensure balanced nutrition, made from the freshest ingredients, right in the SUA kitchen! Each meal includes a nutritious hot or cold entrée (your choice), a side dish, a cookie and a healthy drink, all for $5. It’s a great value and another way St. Ursula is working to make SUA the best it can be!

SUA Walk 2012 S
UA hosted the annual SUA Walk in April 2012 and it was a huge success. Students rallied to collect pledges and donations for the walk, another way SUA
helps to supplement its operations and scholarship funds. It’s a way the students take pride in directly helping their school and classmates. The SUA Walk benefits from St. Ursula’s great location. Each grade levels walks together and winds through scenic Eden Park past the Krohn Conservatory, Mirror Lake and the Eden Park Gazebos. They continue through Seasongood Pavilion, past the Playhouse in the Park and through Mt.; Adams while enjoying breathtaking views of downtown Cincinnati.

This year was one of new beginnings for St. Ursula. I would like to share the highlights of this very exciting and productive year. Lelia Keefe Kramer ’77 assumed the role of President and Craig Maliborski the role of Principal. A number of operational changes were made within the organization to strengthen our position for the future. The administrative team conducted a review of the campus facilities and recommended an updated capital plan for future development and maintenance of our campus. Also, Sister Mary Jerome, OSU ’63 rejoins the Board as an Ursuline representative. We look forward to the guidance, leadership and talent each of them will provide in ensuring St. Ursula educates young women in the Ursuline tradition and provides the best academic environment for our students. I end my tenure as Board Chair knowing that the Board leadership is in the capable hands of Steve Dreyer and Beth Stautberg ’83 who will assume the Chair and Vice Chair roles in the fall.
The new Administration, with the support of the Board of Trustees, has planned and implemented several key initiatives to increase the level of financial aid given to our students. The St. Ursula Leadership Alliance (SULA), with eighteen founding members, brought together a group of alums, past parents and friends of the Academy who have pledged to give or raise a yearly amount for a period of five years to increase the financial aid pool while we focus on the important task of growing the school’s endowment fund for the future. the principal’s message Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends of SUA:
I
have noticed an increasing number of news stories and articles in nonacademic magazines and papers regarding school academic standards and
assessments. While the Common Core State Standards have been part of the academic dialogue for some years now, the general public is now getting some insights of this initiative within our schools. The Common Core State Standards is an initiative to increase the competency of our students and prepare them for global competition. It is widely reported that students in the United States are lagging behind our global counterparts in key areas of language, mathematics and science. The Common Core State Standards attempt to bridge that gap by elevating competencies and skills in our students with a unified approach. Fortyfive states, including Ohio, have voluntarily adopted these academic standards. While critics would contend that this is an attempt to nationalize education, others believe it to the first step in instituting real change based on best practices,
that their Kairos retreat experience is one of the most influential experiences in
deliberate objectives and meaningful assessments.

St. Ursula Academy continues to provide an academic curriculum that is
our students and teachers a formal way to discuss issues that are pertinent to our
challenging and robust. Our dedicated and talented faculty have the skills and
students’ lives: alcohol and drugs, self-esteem and self-image, academic integrity,
motivation to make adjustments to our curriculum in order to better prepare our
and friendships, to name a few. Our guidance staff supports students who have lost
students for their next endeavors. Last year, the class of 2012 was offered over
a significant family member or friend with a program called “Companions on the
$24-million dollars in financial aid for college. This is a testament not only to
Journey.” And our students, under the leadership of the Student Council Wellness
the accomplishments of those individual students, but also to the faculty and
Committee of the student council, have offered programming on depression and
staff that have created a learning environment that recognizes and unleashes
personal care. All of these things help our students to grow in their ability to be a
their potential.

Academic Excellence Congratulations
Class of 2012, our newest Academy Alum! The Class of 2012 at Music Hall, May 2012
St. Ursula is proud of the 187 seniors who graduated this spring at Music Hall. They are the newest members of the SUA Alumnae Association. 85% of the senior class earned college scholarship offers totaling more than $24-million in academics, athletics, service and fine arts. Valedictorian was Lauren Marie Heintz Salutatorian was Emma Caroline Lancaster
S
t. Ursula Academy remains committed to educating its students to become women of faith, integrity and courage who
are committed to building a better world. The students work with talented and committed teachers who help them unleash their academic potential and teach them valuable life skills. An example, juniors and seniors now take a financial literacy course as part of their curriculum. They participate in a computer-generated simulation that allows them to receive a “paycheck”, pay bills, take out loans, and manage credit. It holds them to deadlines, penalizes them for late payments and rewards them for smart money decisions. The idea is to prepare them to manage their finances wisely as they enter college, and later, the workforce.
Meg McGrath of East Walnut Hills, Brianna Goumballe of Hyde Park, Jenna Meyer of White Oak, Maria Thaman of West Chester, and Laurel Baker of Independence, KY. Students practice managing finances in a real-life simulation in the classroom.
Emma Caroline Lancaster, Salutatorian
Students also enjoy the benefits of 21st century learning strategies and incorporate hands on experimentation with lessons incorporating real-life relevance and examples. This style of learning helps students retain and apply the knowledge they are learning. 30

SUA pig evolved from a blank canvas to a finished product! The pig was located near the downtown public library during the World Choir Games and will return to St. Ursula to live permanently this fall. It is titled “Porkitecture” because it features images of iconic local architecture with a music theme.

Service Learning A group of students joined SUA teachers Ms. Probst, Mr. Nicaise and Mr. Dauner on a service-learning project about sustainable architecture. They helped to finish the Martinville, Ohio Earthship, an off-the-grid, passive solar home made of natural and recycled materials using thermal mass construction.
SUA Theatre The St. Ursula Ensemble Theatre (S.E.T.) had a busy year with three shows - Radium Girls, Anything Goes, and Our Miss Brooks. All three received rave reviews and show the St. Ursula theatre department is cultivating some big talent.
Music The St. Ursula Academy Vocal Ensemble (SUAVE) continues to gather attention wherever the group performs. SUAVE won many awards this year including the top prizes in the Kings Island “Music in the Parks” Competition and the Music in the Parks Competition at Pigeon Forge. Rich Culture at SUA Diversity Embracing diversity and inclusion as we celebrate the dignity of each person continues to be one of our core values at St. Ursula. We strive to educate our students to appreciate the differences we all have and the gifts and talents we can all offer to one another. Diversity Director Toilynn O’Neal ’90 plans events, class activities and programming all year for our students, faculty and staff. A highlight

She credits the grace and mercy of the Lord for her being alive today.

Leadership Last school year, the Student Life department at SUA hosted an event called Leadership Saturday. It was created for our high school students to help them develop their critical thinking, leadership skills and confidence. Hundreds of students attended the event, that included an impressive list of featured group leaders and speakers like Cincinnati city council member and former Cincinnati mayor Roxanne Qualls, communication expert and coach Deborah Pearce, and Dr. Lisa Larkin. The program gave the young women information and real life examples of how to make decisions, how to manage difficult situations, how to chase their dreams, and so much more. Students attending the Leadership Saturday Event worked with Cincinnati councilwoman Roxanne Qualls.

he seniors who graduated in 2012 are part of the largest class to graduate from St. Ursula Academy with 187 students. They enjoyed Senior Tea this year in the spacious Harold C. Schott Gymnasium and Convocation Center. The Tea organizers did a fantastic job and transformed the site into a beautiful and elegant space. The students invited mothers, grandmothers, and sisters to the event. They laughed and talked and enjoyed the experience that is unique to St. Ursula and that so many alumnae have loved for decades and will continue to love for decades more!
