Trust balance to satisfy. Trust safety that inspires. Trust innovation that liberates.

Trust what’s inside

to expand your possibilities. The Subaru Forester is always prepared for wherever your road leads you. It starts inside with our exclusive engineering—Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel Drive and SUBARU BOXER® engine for balance and control—and it reaches out to every component of your vehicle, working together to deliver invigorating driving with a comforting sense of security. With Forester, your possibilities are endless. After all, it’s what’s inside every Subaru that always delivers the trust you need to put confidence in motion.

It corners the market on confidence. And cornering. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Symmetry gives you balance. Balance gives you control. Matched with the SUBARU BOXER® engine for an almost perfectly symmetrical layout, the Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system maximizes the power delivery with exceptional traction and generates balance and stability for total control in almost any condition, confidence in nearly any situation, and performance that’s simply unexpected in an SUV.

DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE Exceptional traction makes acceleration immediate and exhilarating. And the symmetry helps the Forester deliver responsive handling because it ’s more stable during cornering, for a unique feeling of control at all times.

CONSTANT CONTACT The more your tires are engaged with the road, the more control you have. Power is routed to all four tires all the time in order to maintain optimal connection to the road, maximizing handling and control while in motion.

AGILITY IN AN EMERGENCY In bad weather, or in the precious seconds it takes to react to a sudden situation, the symmetrical drivetrain with impressive side-to-side balance provides the stability, agility and traction that help you step around danger.

03

Keep your profile low, and your expectations high. WHAT’S INSIDE: The SUBARU BOXER® engine with its distinc tive horizontally opposed pistons and revolutionary long-stroke design. WHAT IT DOES: It delivers inherent balance for exceptional smoothness, rigidity for high strength, and a low centre of gravity to out-handle ordinary SUVs.

INNOVATION IN MOTION The SUBARU BOXER® engine outpaces the demands of tomorrow while retaining all their time-proven benefits, from smooth power to more balanced handling. A revolutionary long-stroke design revs eagerly while delivering more efficient combustion. Air, fuel and temperature are precisely controlled to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Coupled with the AWD, the Forester offers you sharper handling, better fuel efficiency and a no-compromise approach to safety and comfort.

INCREASED STABILITY Because the engine block has a flatter profile and sits lower in the chassis, the overall vehicle is more stably balanced and resistant to side-to-side motion than other designs.

SMOOTH POWER At any rpm the engine delivers immediate, responsive power that comes on smooth. The pistons lay flat and work against each other to reduce vibrations, making the ride as comfortable as it is exciting.

LONG-LASTING PERFORMANCE The engine’s flat design is inherently rigid and well balanced, generating less vibration than “V-type” or “in-line” engines for more durability and more reliable performance.

04

2.5 -LITRE DOHC SUBARU BOXER® MAX OUTPUT: 170 hp @ 5800 rpm MAX TORQUE: 174 lb-ft @ 4100 rpm FUEL ECONOMY: 7.4 L/100 km highway Forester’s 2.5-litre double overhead camshaf t (DOHC) engine balances ef ficient excitement with refined response. Amongst its many enhancements are an optimised intake, cleaner combustion, and an Ac tive Valve Control System (AVCS) providing exceptionally precise control of intake-valve timing. Together, they boost low-end torque while cutting fuel consumption and emissions.

2.5 -LITRE DOHC TURBO SUBARU BOXER® MAX OUTPUT: 224 hp @ 5200 rpm MAX TORQUE: 226 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm FUEL ECONOMY: 8.4 L/100 km highway This turbocharged DOHC 2.5-litre engine combines the immediate gratification of sportscar performance with the lasting pleasures of SUBARU BOXER® balance. A high-flow intercooler, Active Valve Control System (AVCS) and virtually no turbo lag, all generate a torrent of torque, a continuous crescendo of acceleration, and immeasurable fun.

05

Satisfaction with stability. WHAT’S INSIDE: A balanced chassis with a low centre of gravity, complemented by Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD and a finely tuned suspension. WHAT IT DOES: These elements of control collaborate in precise harmony to deliver surefooted confidence, composure and cornering competence beyond ordinary SUVs.

SUSPENSION Forester’s strut-type front and double wishbone rear suspension have been engineered to inspire even greater handling confidence. Innovative shock-absorber valves and optimised tuning respond with extreme precision, enhancing tire contact and driver feedback. The compact rear suspension allows for a roomier, more useful cargo area, and even compensates for heavy loads. An impressive 220 mm1 of ground clearance balance authentic SUV capability with a quiet ride and sporty, surefooted handling.

06

SUBARU DYNAMIC CHASSIS CONTROL CONCEPT The advantage of a Forester is the inherent benefits of its signature Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (DC 3). The body uses hightensile steel to achieve high strength and light weight. A highly rigid structure delivers a smoother, quieter ride. The rear suspension was made for rough roads and embraces sharp corners with poise and precision. Confidence with comfort, athleticism with safety, and power with efficiency is what makes a Forester more than an SUV.

4

-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION + ACTIVE TORQUE SPLIT AWD

With normal, sports and manual modes, the E-4AT 4-speed automatic transmission continually adapts to your driving style. It’s teamed with the superior grip and stability of Active Torque Split AWD, which instantly distributes torque amongst all four wheels while the vehicle is in motion to suit the conditions, based on individual wheel speeds, steering angle, and lateral and rotational forces.

5

-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION + VISCOUS CENTRE DIFFERENTIAL AWD

A slick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission offers swift, sporty control. It’s paired with AWD utilizing a viscous limited-slip centre differential (LSD) that instantaneously maintains the front-torear torque balance as traction changes.

Total safety comes from its core. WHAT’S INSIDE: An advanced system of safety features, from restraint systems to the surrounding body structure, all working together to keep you safe. WHAT IT DOES: Forester’s engineering provides an inside-out approach to protecting its occupants in the event that a collision is unavoidable.

PASSIVE SAFETY, TO BETTER SURVIVE A COLLISION Forester is engineered to protect its driver, passengers and even pedestrians with a network of progressive safety systems. Advanced SRS1 airbags, active front headrests, collapsible pedals and 3-point seatbelts help protect occupants directly. Surrounding these systems is a strategically strengthened body structure, including Subaru’s Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames, to help minimize the impact energies that reach its occupants or pedestrians. It’s a core Subaru value that driving enjoyment starts with your security and peace of mind.

BREAK AWAY ENGINE Every Subaru goes above and beyond common practice when it comes to your safety. In the event of a head-on collision, your Forester’s SUBARU BOXER® engine and gearbox are driven under the front seat occupants and away from the cabin for your protection.

SEATS, SEATBELTS AND SRS1 AIRBAGS Standard on every Forester are front, front side and curtain SRS1 airbags, as well as height-adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners to hold occupants firmly in place, and load limiters that ease peak forces to the chest. Active front headrests automatically move in a rear collision for better support of the head and neck.

RING-SHAPED REINFORCEMENT FRAMES The Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames s trengthen the passenger cabin from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor. This design helps to divert and dissipate impact energy away from the occupants in a collision. The front crumple zone is integral to the frame.

PEDESTRIAN PROTECTION Forester was designed with the objective of providing a high level of pedestrian protection. Shock-absorbing space between the hood and engine helps to reduce pedestrian injur y in an accident, as do an energy-absorbing front bumper and a specially designed area around the windshield wipers.

1 The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS airbags) affords the driver and passenger additional protection in some collisions. This system provides supplemental protection only, and seatbelts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to out-of-position occupants upon airbag deployment. The combination of SRS and seatbelts provides the best protection in a serious accident.

09

In control for total protection. WHAT’S INSIDE: Forester’s agile response, Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD and advanced active safety systems for control in compromising situations. WHAT IT DOES: Delivers a surefooted and quick reaction for your protection, since the best way to survive an accident is to avoid it altogether.

ACTIVE SAFETY, TO HELP YOU AVOID A COLLISION Many of the same features that make Forester fun to drive also help keep it focused on your safety. The low centre of gravity of its SUBARU BOXER® engine further enhances the precise, surefooted and stable handling of its Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD. Its standard Vehicle Dynamics Control System, responsive steering, antilock brakes, and even the excellent visibility of its large windows are designed to help the driver stay confidently in control.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL SYSTEM

BRAKING SYSTEM

The Vehicle Dynamics Control System uses an array of sensors to analyse if Forester is following the driver’s intended course while cornering or in an evasive manoeuvre. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the system instantly adjusts the AWD torque distribution1, engine output and brakes at each wheel, to help keep the vehicle on course.

Forester ’s standard 4-wheel disc brakes feature a 4-channel A ntilock Br ak ing Sy s tem (A BS) and Elec t ronic Br ake -force Distribution to rebalance front/rear braking pressure when the vehicle is loaded. Brake Assist provides greater force in sudden braking, even if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough, soon enough. And Hill Holder2 holds the brakes for an extra second to help prevent rollback during uphill starts.

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)

Standard VDC electronic stability control utilizes sensors which constantly monitor wheel speeds, steering angle, brake pressure, vehicle yaw rate and lateral g-forces. If VDC detects a difference between the driver’s intended path and the one the vehicle is actually taking, VDC applies braking power and/or reduces engine torque to help correct vehicle path.

Traction Control System (TCS)

VDC also incorporates an all-wheel, all-speed traction control system which senses a loss of traction and applies braking force to the slipping wheel or wheels as necessary to maintain vehicle motion.

Subaru vehicles are uniquely designed to get out there more—and to leave it out there less. We build our vehicles for maximum longevity because more time spent on the road equals less time spent in junkyards and landfills. Fully 95.4% of our vehicles sold in Canada over the last 10 years are still on the road today.1 You’ll also find very little waste created in the production of a Subaru—many of our vehicles are built in the Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., (SIA) factory, which was the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to achieve zero-landfill status. Other Subaru facilities around the world now achieve similar goals in helping to preserve the environment. Respect for our surroundings is yet another way that Subaru vehicles help to build driver confidence for the road ahead. 1 Based on R. L. Polk Canada, Inc. Canadian Vehicle In Operation data as of July 2, 2011, for model years 2002–2011. Actual longevity of any car will vary based upon operating conditions.

www.subaru.ca The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS airbags) affords the driver and passenger additional protection in some collisions. This system provides supplemental protection only, and seatbelts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to out-of-position occupants upon airbag deployment.
