SUBARU BOXER Engine Few other cars drive with the fun and eagerness of Impreza, so you won’t be surprised by how uniquely this is accomplished. The horizontally opposed configuration of the SUBARU BOXER engine places the pistons 180 degrees apart, for a lower, flatter profile than that of other engine types. This gives the engine, and overall vehicle, a lower centre of gravity and a more balanced distribution of weight. Furthermore, the pistons’ opposing movements inherently counteract each other, naturally helping to reduce vibration.

Geared for exciting response and control, both the 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions enable you to define your own driving style. They feature hill start assist to help you avoid rolling when starting on a hill. The gearbox is paired with an AWD system utilising a viscous limited-slip centre differential
(LSD). Whenever the balance of traction changes, the LSD instantaneously redistributes the torque to the front and rear wheels as needed. And on 1.6-litre model, the Dual-range (Hi/Lo) gearing gives you an added edge in control for extreme situations.

Vehicle dynamics control system
The 4-wheel disc brakes feature lightweight aluminium rear calipers and a design that helps provide a strong, progressive feel. The Antilock Braking System includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution, to reapportion front/rear braking pressure when the vehicle is loaded. To help ensure maximum braking during an emergency, the Impreza features both Brake Assist and Brake Override.
The Vehicle Dynamics Control System monitors and analyses via an array of sensors whether the vehicle is following the driver’s intended path. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel are adjusted to assist in keeping the vehicle on course.

The Impreza features whiplash-reducing front seats and energy-absorbing head restraints, along with seatbelts with pretensioners, that can help better protect front occupants during a rear collision. Front, front-side, curtain and knee SRS* airbags are standard on all models to maximise protection in frontal and side impacts.
The Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frames feature high-tensile steel designs that are strong and rigid, yet light in weight. The passenger cabin is strengthened from the roof to the doors, pillars and oor. This design helps, in a collision, to divert and dissipate impact energy away from the occupants.
