Have you been asked to write a trip report for the magazine? Don’t panic, it is not that hard. It doesnt have to be a novel, just an interesting description of what happened on the trip is fine. Please don’t forget to include a list of trip participants and the cars they drive. Also, the sooner you write it after the trip, the easier it is to remember everything that happened. Forward it to the trip leader asap so they can then send it on to the editor. Trip leaders, it is up to you to select someone to write the Trip Report for you. Whether you ask a specific person, ask the group if someone would like too, toss a coin to choose or use the old tradition of last person to the meeting point that’s up to you but please have someone selected preferably early in the trip but definitely by the end of the trip. Please remember to also encourage keen photographers on your trip to send their best few photos to the editor, high resolution images work best. To those who celebrate birthdays in

President’s Report Happy New Year to everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a great new year. 2014 was a rough year for a number of our members in different ways so here’s hoping that 2015 is a much brighter year and sees you all achieving your goals, dreams and destinations! Speaking of destinations, what a fabulous christmas party we had. Myall River Camp was fantastic and I’m sure we will be heading back there for many weekends in the future. Karen did a superb job with the organisation and food for the party - it was certainly a great spread enjoyed by everyone. Thanks for all the hard work Karen. Many of us were out and about over the Christmas/New Year period and from pictures that I have seen so far it looks like there were some great places visited. I know we enjoyed our time at Lostock Dam, a great little rustic caravan park that’s more like camping in the bush and not even crowded! The January picnic/bbq ‘meeting’ was a success with the rain holding off long enough for a pleasant evening until the mozzies started to eat us alive! Michael Dunstan has been doing a great job getting our old photos back up on the website. It’s a time consuming job but we will get there. Go and have a look and reminisce over some old trips, they might even give you some inspiration for a trip to run. If you were on any of these old trips and can add information to the photo please do, just click on the edit button on the cover page and this will take you to where you can add people, trip names etc. There’s lots of great trips coming up so don’t forget to get your name down or better still, run your own trip, there’s plenty of dates free so contact Mark or Troy to set something up. As you read this I should be sunning myself on the deck of the Celebrity Solstice with a cocktail firmly ensconced in my hand sailing into the sunset towards tropical islands - a little different to our normal camping trips away but a nice way to celebrate our 30 years of marriage. See you all when we get back!

Editorially speaking … Welcome to our first electronic magazine, I hope there are no glitches but there’s always a chance when trying something new. It will be interesting to gather people’s thoughts on electronic -v- hard copy down the track - there will be one more electronic version for the April - May edition so we will get your opinions after that. Here comes the same old broken record, please remember to organise your trip reports and have them done and sent to me asap after a trip is finished. Deadline for articles for the next magazine will be 23 February. Cheers, happy reading.

Julie

The Subaru & Recreational 4WD Club, its Editor and the Committee accept no responsibility for opinions expressed in this magazine, nor for the accuracy, veracity, safety or legality of any product or modification. January Picnic “Meeting Well it was looking a little bit iffy at 4.30pm for our first picnic meeting when the storm clouds rolled in but after a very brief storm and not even a bad one at that, my weather man on the spot, Criag No Shoes, confirmed my thoughts and it was all systems go. 6pm came and there were significant patches of blue sky again as chairs, picnic tables and even a marquee were set up to enjoy the evening on the river. Some even brought their dogs. Around 8.30pm we had some unwelcome guests drop in, MOZZIES aarrghh! They were vicious enough to make most decide it was time to go home. Thanks to all those that came, same time, same place next year perhaps, but with mozzie coils.

Trip Conveners’ Report Hello from the desk of the trip conveners. During the Christmas and New Year period many people got on the road to travel so Troy and I hope you all had well planned and safe trips. We know we did. In the coming year we hope to be writing some of these reports while on the road. It is pleasing to see some more trips being added to the calendar in the last few weeks. We have also received a few more enquiries about locations and available weekends for some additional trips. The ideal club trip calendar would quite often have more than one trip on a given weekend. If you have a trip or location idea then you can easily become a trip leader. It is not a matter of how many people you might think will want to come but rather whether you want to go on that trip or camp in that location yourself. Troy and I are only an email of phone call away and ready to help you get your trip on the road. I recall a recent trip Karolyn and I ran with one car, one trailer and two people. Lol In recent times the club has been to Newnes, Gunning and Barrington Tops. Interesting things seem to happen on club trips and we encourage you to be part of them. I heard Gunning went off with a real BANG! And the Barrington Tops trip had some flat times (tyres) but was also another great weekend resulting in a new member. There are now nine trips in the calendar for 2015 including two for the Australia Day long weekend. The best way to stay updated is by checking our web site regularly. If there are changes or additions they will always be seen online first. Your Trip Convenors are working on a few ideas but would love your help with more exciting ideas for next year. Happy New Year

The Not So Technical, Technical Report The amazing substance that is WD40 We all probably have that little yellow & blue can in our cars & yes it un-sticks things, but what else can it do & where did it originate. Below is a little bit of info in regards to the amazing substance that is WD40. A bit of History: In 1953, a fledgling company called Rocket Chemical Company and its staff of three set out to create a line of rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry, in a small lab in San Diego, California. It took them 40 attempts to get the water displacing formula worked out. But they must have been really good, because the original secret formula for WD-40®—which stands for Water Displacement perfected on the 40th try—is still in use today. In 1969 the company was renamed after its only product, WD-40. WD-40 Company, Inc., went public in 1973 and was listed Over-The-Counter. The stock price increased by 61% on the first day of listing. Since that time, WD-40 has grown by leaps and bounds and is now virtually a household name, used in numerous consumer and industrial markets such as automotive, manufacturing, sporting goods, aviation, hardware and home improvement, construction and farming. Since the early days of the space race, when workers sneaked WD-40 out of the shop, WD-40 Company has grown to more than 350 employees worldwide with annual sales of more than $350 million. By mid-2013, the WD-40 Company celebrated its 60th Anniversary and the WD-40 Specialist product line has grown to eight products. Some uses in relation to vehicles: · Removes scuff marks on the car caused by shopping trolleys. · Removes bumper stickers · Removes tar & tree sap from vehicles · Lubricates and protects parts from rust & corrosion · Dissolves rust from rusty bolts · Eases removal of bolts & nuts near chassis · Dissolves grease · Buffs out scuff marks on bumpers · Eliminates squeaks from fan belts · Frees stuck accelerators · Eliminates squeaks from locks · Helps free stuck battery cables from terminals · Helps remove break dust from wheels

Above are just some uses related to automotives. Did you know that it also cleans old coins & piano keys, cleans ostrich eggs ready for craft use, frees stuck Lego pieces, cleans dirty power cords, keeps grass from sticking to mower blades & also removes crayon from the TV screen! All of the above information was taken from WD40.com & the website also has a PDF of over 2,000 uses for WD40 - some pretty interesting reading! And for those that haven’t seen it before, refer to the tried & true Engineering Flowchart. Looks like there is another upcoming Technical Report in there........

From the Wonderful Web World Hello from the web, I hope everyone had a Wildly Wonderful Wacky Christmas! It would seem some clarification is necessary for trip registration. By clicking on "Upcoming Trips" then selecting "View Event Details" for a particular trip you wish to view, you are presented with some detail of that trip, a green bar behind which is hidden the Trip Leader's details and a Register button. To view the Trip Leader's details simply click on the green bar and all will be revealed. Select the Register button to apply for a position on the trip; note that even though the "Register" button will change to "Registered", your registration must be approved before your name will appear on the participant list. This approval ideally will be given by the Trip Leader (if they have access) otherwise the Trip Convenors, other committee members and/or the webmaster can give this approval. Currently only committee members have access to grant this approval but we have asked for Trip Leaders themselves to be granted this access as well.

Kevin

You must be joking‌‌ Apparently Jean & Michael Dunstan had an incident similar to this on the Gunning Fireworks trip!

Mt Hay Drive and Twilight Dinner

Trip Leaders: Mark & Karolyn Honor Trip Report : Sandi Strickland and Max Kofahl

Mark had booked a spectacular light show for us and so we watched as a storm in the distance approached us. It was a beautiful afternoon for a drive to the Mountains, so once we had arrived only slightly late, (after softball and a Bunnings BBQ) we set off for the Mount Hay turnoff at Leura. The drive up was relaxing with the usual chatter on the radio, the nicest thing was that the higher we got in the mountains the more the temp dropped and so after it being 36 as we drove past Penrith, by the time we stopped it was 28 degrees. The 15km dirt track in started off with corrugations and pot holes but soon turned out to be a relatively easy drive in.

Attendees: Mark and Karolyn Honor SUBARU OUTBACK Julie, Michael and Zoe Rush MITSUBISHI TRITON David and Pam Wellham SUBARU FORESTER

When we arrived at Mt Hay, there were quite a few cars parked in the car park. We went for a walk towards Mt Hay along the higher ridge of Butterbox Canyon, taking in the scenery. After walking around for almost an hour, co-eeing to the cliffs and taking photos, we sat down for happy hour and dinner. Mark brought along a BBQ and so we had a variety of foods on the barbie ranging from vegie burgers to kebabs.

Mark had booked a spectacular light show for us and so we watched as a storm in the distance approached us. It was very difficult to catch a glimpse of the lightning and we found it funny that it would usually strike when just one person was watching and everyone else was distracted. The storm came pretty close and actually went right around us so we only felt about 2 drops of rain but enjoyed the light show and the rainbow at the end when the sun came out again. Well done Mark! While we were eating dinner a group of Canyoners came up the path we had walked on and we learnt that the canyon is a great canyon with about 5 or 6 abseils and some swimming, but with a huge walk out which they had just done. Lauren, Kaitlin and I decided to go for another walk down the path which they said was the start of the canyon. We sang some songs and had to scramble down some parts of it but stopped when we got to a swampy section and turned back. After dinner and the light show, we said our goodbyes and headed back down the mountain, we were home by around 10. All in all, it was a great afternoon and we would like to thank Mark and Karolyn for organising and running the evening.

14

From Max 'There was lots of dust on the road. We went for a walk and there was a nice sunset. After dinner we went for a second walk and sat on a rock to see a beautiful Blue Mountains sunset. After packing up we played some soccer. We met some new friends. I would like to do a trip like that again.

DRIVER AWARENESS

Trip Leaders: Brian Flood and Brett Atkins Trip Reports: Jo Bortalazzo and Andrew Wise

16

Wingello ...... or was it? Sometimes plans change very quickly or before you even start in this case! Attendees:

My very first experience on a Driver Awareness Weekend, well organised and run by Brian Flood and Brett Atkins was quite an adventure. It was the first time I had met most of the members but I was made to feel very welcome and included in the group.

Andrew Wise - MITSUBISHI PAJERO Brett Atkins - LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4

After meeting at Pheasants Nest Saturday morning Brett led the convoy of 10 vehicles with Brian as TEC.

Brian Flood, Heidi Ploeg and Isabel - JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON Evan King and Jessica Dalkolmo MITSUBISHI PAJERO John & Jane Evans - SUBARU OUTBACK Michael Hamilton - JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Nick, Amanda and Charlie Capratsis - NISSAN PATROL Paul Sistrom - SUBARU FORESTER Paul Williscroft - TOYOTA PRADO Jo Bortolazzo - VW TIGUAN

We took the Wombeyan Caves turnoff and soon found the “mud pools” at Jellore State Forest. This is where most vehicles had ‘a play’ and put their cars through the mud and into slides as well. With Brian in the car I was guided by him as to what to do when the vehicle is in a slide situation. Later, we arrived at “the quarry” in the Merlya State Forest where we lowered tyre pressures and watched vehicles negotiate rocky, very steep ascents and I was amazed to see what these vehicles can negotiate. I was not only impressed with the vehicles but with their drivers, both male and female alike. After lunch at the quarry we went for another drive, over some deep ruts and mud filled holes which the smaller vehicles found to be a bit of a challenge, but we all made it in the end. We also took in a spectacular lookout, before finding a good spot for our bush camp for the night. I’ve learned so much about my vehicle (Twiggy), waiting for the vehicle behind before turning, the importance of tyre pressure, towing/recovery points I didn’t know I had, just to mention a few. I’ve also learned that “when in doubt ... always get out” and walk the track. Saturday evening was equally as enjoyable with nibblies and dinner around a welcoming campfire. Brett was not only our very own personal DJ but photographer as well and together we all celebrated Isabel’s 4 birthday.

17

Sunday was a relatively leisurely affair. After a latiesh breakfast we made our way to a gourmet eatery for lunch in Mittagong (Maccas), then made our way home separately. A big thankyou to Brian and Brett for all their help, advice and reassurance. And thankyou to everyone who attended and helped to make it a memorable, sometimes challenging adventure and from my perspective, a weekend of fun and of learning the capabilities, care and perhaps, the limitations, of my vehicle. My vehicle may be Twiggy by name but she has branched out to become confident in many variable situations.

Jo Bortalazzo

18

We met up at Pheasants Nest servo at 9:00. Brett turned up last. Apparently he was looking for a bottle shop...so early! Brian then informed us that were all mistaken in assuming that we were heading to Wingello SF due to it not having any 4WD tracks! We were then meant to hang our heads in shame at not doing our research;) Instead we headed off on a mystery tour; first stop was Jellore SF where we took turns driving through some mud holes. We then headed off to Meryla SF. Unfortunately on the way, a couple of cars got a bit lost..oops. Anyway, we eventually all got to Meryla SF, and to a place called "the quarry". Basically a 4WD play area made up of

steepish climbs and rock steps. Brian walked us up to a fairly scary rock step and asked for volunteers to drive up. I was sort of obliged to volunteer as I'd previously asked Brian and Brett if they could show me a couple of challenging obstacles to test my new suspension on the Pajero. So up the hill I went, got to the rock step and sat there spinning my wheels. Brian then asked if I'd deflated my tyres, to which I said "ah yeah, I forgot"..doh. Tyres got deflated and up I went after a couple of attempts. Then Brett in his flash Discovery showed me how to do the climb with a lot more finesse. Michael in his Jeep Grand Cherokee (with lockers) cruised up. After lunch a few others had

â—‹

a play too. After the quarry, Brett, Michael, and myself headed off down Meryla Rd and onto a side track, which was pretty badly rutted. And then made it back onto Meryla Rd. We all then made our way to Gunrock Fire Trail, down to a creek and falls (very nice). I decided to head across the creek/water hole, which was fairly deep (nearly to the top of my wheels), up the hill on the other side, back down and across the creek (I'm glad I've got good door seals). Anyway, we all headed back to the main road. I made my way home as I was only there for the day. The other guys then headed to the campground, where, on the way, someone managed to drop his Subaru into a deep mud hole! Many thanks to Brett and Brian for all the tips and a great day.

Bus Shopping Trip

23

There’s nothing like a day shopping till you drop! It’s been a few years since we had a bus shoppng trip and while I was really looking forward to going on it I couldn’t stop the little thrill inside me saying “phew its not me organising it this time” - sorry Sandi!

Attendees: Sandi & Lauren Strickland Julie & Zoe Rush & Bronwyn Sandra Moss & Cassie

We were picked up at Ermington Community Centre close enough to 7.30 after the bus had collected the Campbelltown crew about 45 minutes earlier. We were on our way and at our first stop within only about 10 minutes and we didnt stop from there. Some stops seemed a little short but being the good shoppers that we are we didnt let that deter us.

Tracey Fitzpatrick Jessica Dalkolmo Pam Wellham

Lunch was a very relaxing affair at The Intersection Tavern at Ramsgate and then it was back to it.

Cath DeSantis Gillian Wall Renee Williscroft and friends Leanne Minny Lorraine Rushbrook

We bought manchester, clothes, shoes, nuts, homewares, more clothes, culinary delights, christmas decorations, more shoes and the list goes on! Sandra was particularly interested in the Sunbeam outlet and we were pushing it for time as they close at 4pm sharp no ifs, buts or whys! Luckily for her we arrived with about 15 minutes to spare and the cryovac machine she was so desperately after was hers! It was a fabulous day, lots of great shopping and lots of laughs

Sue & Rebecca Freeman Amanda Capratsis and friends

All in all we spent a massive $7,611-00 but really, divided by 24 thats only $317.25 a head - not a bad effort girls!

Trip Leader: David Wellham Trip Report: Michael Hamilton

25

Well the weather was perfect, if a little warm, for the 10th Abercrombie trip. Attendees: David Wellham - SUBARU FORESTER Kim Nolan - TOYOTA LANDCRUISER Kevin McCormack - MITSUBISHI TRITON Andrew Wise & family MITSUBISHI PAJERO

After meeting with Kim and Kevin, who had camped at Black Springs the night before as a subtle plan for getting out of writing a trip report, we headed down the Goulburn road to the park turnoff where we aired down. We entered straight at the more difficult end and were soon climbing some reasonably steep and rocky tracks. The stock standard Dmax was scraping a few bits here and there and the call came out over the radio suggesting that Santa may be bringing a suspension lift and some better tyres.

Neil Hird - MITSUBISHI CHALLENGER Jamie Newman - ISUZU DMAX Daniel Lisoff - ISUZU DMAX Michael Hamilton - LAND ROVER Soon after, we came to David’s “hill”. Little Bald Hill is the steepest track in the park and an excellent challenge for any car without low range. After walking, (more like climbing), the track, we decided on the best lines and then settled back for the attempts. David was first away. He skilfully guided the Forester through the rocks and up the hill to the top with only a little crunch right at the end because of an unseen dip after a hump. We all learnt from that, each of us negotiating the track quite comfortably. It was the second year in a row where no one needed to be helped up the “hill”. Not long after, the adage “what goes up, must come down” came to the fore and we came to the very rocky and steep descent into another valley on the other side. Note to all, one year we must do this track the other way as well, that would be interesting…. Anyway, surprisingly there were

26

no bumps or crunches on the way down and soon after we were back on a reasonably steep but dusty climb. Well, fearless leader David had a bit of trouble at the crest of the next climb requiring at least three extra goes to find a decent line. We all learnt from David’s experimentation and followed him up without incident. After that we traversed the park visiting the various sites, stopping for lunch at Licking Hole before proceeding to the Sink (which is actually a sink) and then on to the Beach. The Beach was crowded with campers as it was quite hot. There was even a kangaroo swimming there to get cool. We were a bit worried that Silent Creek would be crowded as well, but it was completely empty and we were the sole occupants. Thank you camping gods! It was perfect weather for camping and we all settled down to what ended up being an early night. Next morning, refreshed and ready to go, we hit the main trail through the park centre towards the exit. What a roller coaster ride that is, up and down numerous steep hills with creek crossings at the bottom of each. It seemed that the track had been recently graded so was very smooth, but there were some pretty savage

27

irrigation humps that were playing havoc with the Dmax’s. I found out later that the track probably hadn’t been graded, it was the Dmax utes that were grading it for us using their sidesteps and towbars. Dmax generosity at its best. By lunchtime, we were at the exit to the park airing up for the trip home. We all went our separate ways after a very pleasant and enjoyable weekend. Abercrombie is the type of trip that gives you just enough challenge to make it interesting without too much risk of damage to your car. Many thanks to David for running the trip, and for his enthusiasm and knowledge of the area, and also, many thanks to the other trip participants for their very pleasant company.

A beautiful campground, great people and perfect weather can only lead to one thing ...... A great time! ATTENDEES Paul & Karen Campbell Robert & Sandra Moss Mark & Karolyn Honor Craig Fitzpatrick Tracey Fitzpatrick & Rebecca Foreman

Mum and I left on the Friday to head up to Myall River Camp for the Christmas party. When we got into the park, we drove around to find the campsite & Geoff was already there. We put up our tent. There was bush fires and lots of big pieces of ash falling from the sky that I tried to catch. The next day everyone else arrived. We went down to the beach and some went swimming, some just talked and some went kayaking. The kids built sand castles and dug big holes. When Geoff got out of the kayak he fell out and Evan had to help him. It was very funny.

After lunch people started to get dressed for the Christmas party. Rebecca & I had the same shirts! We had already decorated the tree and tables. We didn't have a Christmas angel so mum made one from a beer can, cable ties & duct tape. All the kids were excited because Santa came. Everyone got their presents and unfortunately Izzy's plate was broken. We played some games, and one was guessing the Christmas carols, it was fun & I won some of them.

Izzy had a go at telling spooky stories too, hers were about Dora and Seaworld. We stayed around the campfire and Craig made the logs glow different colours with some special stuff. In the morning most people went for a swim before packing up to go home. It was the best Christmas party ever, I had a great time.

After Santa we all had a massive dinner that was delicious. All the kids got bubble wands from Karen and we blew them everywhere. Evan had one too. When it got dark, me, Rebecca and Travis told spooky camp stories in Rebecca's van and made a zombie movie, it was awesome fun. We all came out for dessert that was chocolate cake and pavlova.

AND THEN LATER AROUND THE CAMPFIRE

…..

After dinner, which was a fabulous affair, it was time for the fire to be lit and the adult’s presents under the tree to be doled out. Karen gave us all a number and as a quirky little rhyme was read out for your corresponding number you were able to choose a gift but more often than not you had to swap that gift with one, sometimes 2 or even 3 other people. The theme for the gifts was ‘naughty’ and people seemed to run with that very successfully. Anything from elephant underwear to a santa mankini, from 50 Shades of Grey to the Kama Sutra, interestingly shaped chocolates and straws and of course, the good old standby of a bottle of wine - there were certainly many many laughs and in this instance it was certainly “what happens around the camp fire stays around the camp fire”. I wonder how Scarlett is??????

A very pleasant spot to while away a few days in the bush. Christmas Day - how different to our usual family Christmas! Instead of cooking and preparing for a family lunch it was pack up and go, puppies and all. Dusty and Dasher were excited for their road trip, the best bit of all was not having to travel in the boot but on the back seat stretched out. With two pit stops we made it safe to the camping ground with the rain chasing us and catching up with us the moment we drove in. Thanks rain, now we got blamed for you and punished with the trip report. Making up our campsite in the rain was not much fun and we found out all the leaky bits of our camper. Two tarps on top and the leak was fixed for the weekend. Our ‘fixeruperer home’ was still cosy and warm and a nice change to the tents. Even the dogs where excited as they had their own bed inside the camper and did not have to sleep in the rain. We had a communal dinner the first night with yummy salads, bruschetta and ham and pudding and delicious trifle for dessert. Despite the rain we

had a great night cramped under Tracey's awning with good conversations and lots of laughs. It was a pleasure to meet Craig's brother and his lovely family. The next day brought sunshine and heat and we all relaxed in the shade of trees, some had a cool dip in the river or went for a walk to the dam. The kids had fun playing cricket and ball and Tracey even had a kite to let go in the wind. The dogs enjoyed their time at the river and chillaxing in the shade. Bella and Tilley made sure to show our big boys who the boss was and it was quite funny to see them hail down to the two girls commands. Poor Dasher had a less nice experience with another person’s dog which came out of nowhere and bit him on his legs and tail, my poor baby did not know what was happening, trying to climb up on me shaking and petrified. Lucky the very apologetic owners were not far behind and nothing worse happened. The second night we all cooked for ourselves but sat together to eat. The rain came back and we all

squeezed together again for a another night of conversation and laugher. Harley, Craig and Evan started discussing the idea of a sexy club calendar starirng our very handsome club men. Scary times ahead ladies... The next day the clouds set in and it was quite a drizzly day. We put a big tarp up to sit under so we did not need to squeeze so tight under Tracey's awning. Good day to do Sudoku, read or just laze around. We went for a walk with the dogs to the dam and enjoyed the lovely countryside. At night we had a nice warm fire going and the boy’s plans of a club calendar took form when one stood up to the challenge of a photograph. The “Nude But Not Too Rude” Calendar was taking form. Scarrrryyyyy! The next day was still drizzly and sadly we had to pack up and go, really would have loved to stay. It was a great relaxing long weekend for us with nice company and plenty of laughs. Thank you Tracey and Craig for organizing it. Jessica

After the torrential downpour when Jessica & Evan arrived, it was curious to note that when they drove off Sunday arvo, the rain started to clear. We got to christen Craig’s new fire pit on Sunday night, with just 4 of us there, it was the ducks guts! Monday dawned and with it came BLUE sky! I had got an email from the RTA saying my vehicle had been detected without a tag, so we were off to Maitland RTA to exchange the dead tag for new one, was a good idea and would have been even better had the mongrels been open! We arrived back to camp and settled in to await the arrival of the Rushes. I got sick of waiting and took a XXXX out of the fridge, hadn’t even pulled the ring pull before the Chickute rolled into camp. Much amusement for all, as we helped them erect the disco marquee. Geoff provided evening entertainment taking selfies!

Thankfully, the wind died down again and by about 4 the trip leader used his power and announced it was time for fivesies! So another pleasant day drew towards the evening campfire. Wednesday we had a successful run to Maitland RTA and on the way back we passed John Young on his way out. NYE dinner was to be a communal aussie BBQ, another great effort. The meal was finished so we sat around the fire waiting till midnight and the usual mayhem. We even enjoyed a fireworks display, it was good, whoever organised it, never did find out who put it on.

Harley

Tuesday would have been a fairly quiet day, except, the bloody wind came up! Fair dinkum, we had gusts of wind you wouldn’t believe. I got sick of standing the shower tent back up, so just left it - as the wind dropped, it stood itself back up only to lay down when the next gust hit us.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Arrived, set up early – the day already warm. A relaxing morning spent laying around the shade, snoozing and /or reading. A dip in the river for a cool off with a couple of beers followed by Harley’s homemade scones. A 3am storm saw most out in the rain zipping up or pegging down. Another 30 plus degree day today. Craig took us all for a drive, great views and good dirt track driving. Change of undies required for Jo after a snake encounter. Came back to relax in the river before fivesies and a quiet night around the fire. The day kicked off with a gourmet brekky cooked by Craig. Another scorcher without a cloud in the sky. A paddle on the dam was a great way to spend the afternoon with a cool breeze and good views before driving back to Sydney.

Sunday was another glorious summer day which made it hard for those leaving today, packing up in the heat. Kevin & Ann-Marie had secured a lovely shady tree for us all to sit under in the morning, just soaking up the peace and quiet, reading and napping. After lunch Ann-Marie, Travis and I decided to float our way down the river. Great idea and worked well once we finally stopped ‘bottoming’ out. Was beautiful in the water, sipping on a beer or too. The boys came down with the dogs and enjoyed the shade by the river’s edge. A quiet night by the fire to finish off what had been a fabulous time at Lostock Dam. Thanks again to Craig for organising a great trip.

Member Profile Geoff Adcock

Member since – 13 March 1981 Current Vehicle – Nissan Pathfinder 2000 model Vehicle Name – “Canning” Tyres – general Grabbers A/T 31x10x16, they are a South African make. I started out getting two of them in Broome as a cheap replacement till I got back to town. But on getting back I was so impressed with them that I went out and bought another two. They are extremely quiet and are hanging on in the tread department. Modifications – extra 95 litre fuel tank fitted to the rear as well as a rear mounted wheel carrier. Roof rack and Foxwing awning, dual battery system as well as daylight driving lights, front and rear running through the ignition system plus bull bar and driving lights. Various other smaller items. Planned Modifications – Nil Past Vehicles – I started with a Subaru MY81 wagon which was heavily optioned up re ground clearance etc but became very uncomfortable around town etc, I had this beast for 6 years before I moved onto a Lada Niva which I almost rebuilt over 10 years but was a great offroad vehicle. From there I moved into a much more comfortable Nissan Pathfinder in 97 which I had till 2011. I then changed to a later Pathfinder of 2000 vintage which is what I am driving at present. Dream Car – I really never had one as I have always kept my interests in vehicles within my budget, so to speak. Favourite Place to Camp – any one that comes up to my expectations. Ferndale in the Dungog area is one that comes to mind. Favourite Track – My favourite 4wd tracks have to be the old Yalwal playground which was where I cut my teeth on and developed my 4wdriving skills. Unfortunately this marvelously fantastic play ground was pulled from us by the government of the day (1996). Dream Destination – The Great Ocean Rd in Victoria. The last bit of Aus that I have not driven in order to complete the entire road network driven around the coastal fringe. Tent/Camper Trailer – Over the years I have had a variety of tent configurations from the very smallest to a 3 metre by 3 metre monster with all the extras added. Since retirement I have been mainly concerned with my Avan campers, having just upgraded to the larger model a couple of months ago. Committee Positions held - I was involved with committee activities from 82 onwards to the early 2000s, having been club captain to trip convener to vice president and president. First Club Trip – Newnes just two weeks after joining in March 81.

Best Club Trip – After nearly 34 years of club membership it is almost impossible to come up with such a claim of best trip as most have been great overall. Some trips you’ve been on – Trips I have been on ha ha, heaps and heaps and heaps. Those that stand out are Cape York in 1986, 89 and 93. Fraser Island 82, Morton and Fraser in 90 then Morton and Fraser again in 09. The Simpson Desert trips of 85, 87 and 2012. Trips you’ve run – I ran many trips between 82 and 2000 such as Yalwal and into the Blue Mountains and up north. What the club means to you – It has fostered many good friendships and memories over the many years of attendance.

Convoy and trip procedures

1

When roads are rough or dusty, maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

2 3

Maintain position in convoy except in unusual circumstances.

Always wait at intersections to ensure that the vehicle behind you knows which way to go. EXCEPTION: When drivers are known to each other and radio contact has been made, directions may be given over the CB, to allow the convoy to keep moving.

4

When arriving at a hard section (i.e. creek crossing, steep hill, washout etc.) wait for the vehicle ahead to clear, or to be called through on the CB.

STAY IN TOUCH When on trips our club uses broadcast channel

15 UHF The alternate channel is

16 UHF

5 6

Always stay on the track – Don’t stray into the bush!

If you want to leave the convoy, tell the trip leader what you want to do. Don’t just wander off!

7

9

8

10

When using the CB, allow time between transmissions for others to call and keep transmissions short to allow for emergency transmissions.

If there is an emergency call, the trip leader should be the ONLY person to reply. If the trip leader is unable to clearly receive the message, a person will be appointed to relay the radio traffic. All other transmissions MUST cease until the trip leader advises that the emergency is over. EXCEPTION: Radio silence may be broken for another emergency.

Only people nominated by the trip leader should help others through obstacles (“Too many cooks …”) The position of “tail-end Charlie” will be allotted by the trip leader. This person will be required to advise the Trip Leader of various events during the trip, and stay with his/her vehicle and operate the CB should an emergency situation arise.

11

Take nothing but photos (and video), and leave nothing but foot prints (and tyre

tracks).
