Whether it’s the hairy back on the Fabulous Diamonds album cover or Meghan Remy’s wigs from the last U.S. Girls tour: we have a thing for hair. Hairdos make the perfect excuse to start a meaningless conversation on a night out and we can’t imagine anyone better than our hairdresser Sabrina to share the latest gossip with. Sure, it can be a pain in the ass when you wake up in the morning but as we all know, a good hair day equals a happy mood. Hence this issue: an ode to perfectly cut bangs and to conditioners that make your hair silky smooth. And to the astonishing you in the mirror, of course! Page 3

MAAN
soundcloud.com/kraak_records/maan-love-lost
MAAN are Tim Depraetere and Simon Apers. They emerged out of the Belgian cassette underground only a few months ago, releasing a tape with ritualistic horror jams on the Ghent-based label Smeltkop. We saw MAAN play one helluva show at Les Ateliers Claus, supporting Fushitusha. Only using bass, 80’s synths, guitars and a trumpet, they played one of the most outstanding cold wave songs we have heard in more than a long time. It sounded as if they were bitten by an undead lesbified vampire version of Ian Curtis, turning them into bitter engineers on the edge of suicide. Another impressive performance was at Art Cinema OFFoff, where they delivered an hourlong exercise in repetition and ritualism, revealing their connections to the avant-garde. In late March they released their debut LP Manifold. Recorded in two days on a crappy four-track and mixed with the use of an old tape echo, the songs hint to long forgotten Belgian wave, to the drunken lo-fi sadness of Drunk Elk and the parlando driven poetry/synth unit The Shadow Ring. One way or the other, MAAN exhibit an authentic and highly original approach to music: a cold scientific methodology, used to analyse the inhuman strategies behind human emotions. That and a sense for mature songwriting. Page 9

How many different hairstyles have you had in your life and what was the worst? About six, I think. The worst one was the work of quite the hip hairdresser in Berlin, whom I gave carte blanche - to my regret. I returned from his salon looking like a crossover between Cleopatra and Amy Winehouse.

We tried to ask free-floater Cameron Stallones questions on his hairdo while he was riding a donkey in the Mexican desert [not kidding]. Somehow the conversation ended up being mainly about pants, enlightenment and strange monoliths. Not really what we had in mind, but guess that’s just the way it goes. ‘I have no idea. I love that. I’m happiest when I’m not in control. I think too much to be in control.’ Interview by Gerlin Heestermans and Brenda Bosma Photos shot by Nicholas Haggard in Los Angeles, USA
Are you a perfectionist when it comes to creating? Do you split hairs? Yes, although that’s really funny because I’m mostly using stuff from the junk shop. Precision is a state of mind but I don’t have a method. I just start jamming. It tends to be a bad idea to have too many ideas beforehand.
You want it to be in the moment? Yeah, I’m a completely present man. I’m without any thought of what I want it to sound like, without any attempt to direct it. Obviously I have those thoughts and feelings, but they’re coming out in a more direct way. They don’t need to pass through Page 13

‘We have a lot of levels we operate on, so there’s something about not letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing, you know?’ the brain-pan first, they can come out through the fingers. So the gifts are in the present, not in the past or future? Definitely, dude! But what about the future? The point is to not even try to know and also to realize that you already know. It’s just about remembering that you know. What are you gonna do next? I have no idea. I love that. I’m happiest when I’m not in control. I think too much to be in control. Putting my pants on is the last decision I make. I’m wearing blue shorts, by the way. I read Sun Araw means ‘Sacred Rest’. How do you find rest, being as busy as you are? I’m not sure that I do, but it’s definitely something I aspire to. We have a lot of levels we operate on, so there’s something about not letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing, you know? There are parts of yourself that need to be walled off Page 14
from other parts of yourself. You gotta be undercover a little bit. And can you also relax on a couch while being undercover? I’m having a hard time at that. I’m a real active person. There’s a big part of me that wants to lie on the couch and listen to beautiful sounds, but halfway through I’m back up and trying to do something. I just want to put my pants on and let that be the last decision I make during the day. I’m not trying to move, I’m trying to be moved. You’ve recently recorded with the Jamaican band The Congos. Life on the island must be pretty different than the one you’re familiar with. Did you take any lessons with you from your dreadlocks colleagues? Everything was a lesson. The way people think and act is different. Their relationship with the Earth is different. You’re out of your water completely and are bound to do their thing. But I got it the second I got off the plane. I was like: ‘Take my thing

away from me, man! Zip the garbage bag and throw it away, please!’ It makes you step outside of the boxes that you’re familiar with. It was truly wild. Did you find some sort of enlightenment? Of course... not! It’s a process, a ladder. I think maybe I got like the tip of my fingers on the bottom rung. That’s the beginning of wisdom, you know, knowing you’re not getting it at all. What hairstyle did you once sport in your life that you will forever regret? No regrets, no shame in the game. Actually hair is not an important part of my daily matters. Yeah... but which part of your body would you least like to see adorned with hair? Have you ever seen that movie The Peanut Butter Solution? That would be it! What if after this you were confronted
with a strange floating monolith, what would you do? I would probably look at it, touch it. I’d even rub up against it. Then I would lick it. What would it taste like? It would taste bitter, ‘cause things taste bitter when we haven’t formed an opinion on them yet. In our minds it will taste great, because that’s just a decision. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like you have one, but deep down you do. Sun Araw plays on April 16 at Les Ateliers Claus in Brussels. The show is free for Subbacultcha! members.

Anxiety is the full-length follow up to Autre Ne Veut’s 2010 self-titled debut, which was for many the definitive post-millennial failure pop statement outside of time and style. Arthur Ashin talked to us about Kate Bush, trichotillomania and braiding your hair à la Willie Nelson. Interview by Will Martin Photos by Jody Rogac
Your music has pretty strong 80s undercurrents. Do you have any connection to hair metal? While I’d disagree with that as a generalizable assertion - unless ‘synthesizer’ is synonymous with a decade - I’ve listened to a bit of hair metal in my day. There is some Iron Maidenesque dueling guitar work on Don’t Ever Look Back, but I’m not sure that they were a hair metal band. You have a master’s degree in Psychology. Chaetophobia is psychological disorder that results in fear of hair. Have you come across it? No, but I do have experience with trichotillomania, the compulsive urge to pull out (and in some cases, eat) one’s own hair, which leads to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or
functional impairment. My research focused on studying autism spectrum disorders, repetitive soothing behaviors and the neurology involved: while I always thought I was depressive, I’ve recently realized I have more of an anxiety disorder than chronic depression. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical explored hippie counter-culture and the sexual liberation that went with it. Do you see the rising trend in R&B and sensuality within underground music as a desire to return to the sexual openness that was found in the countercultural movements of the 1960s, or is it just a case of pop music influencing art on a more general scale? I think that we’re in a cultural moment that privileges the body Page 19

rather than the mind. These threads are always present, but like a braid, are some times more pronounced and come to the forefront. Has the musical as a genre had any influence on the music you write? Not directly, but artists such as Kate Bush have, and she can be quite theatrical. Ego Free, Sex Free: does vanity result in more or less sex? Everybody has their game (or Page 20
lack thereof ). Vanity can be related. Confidence without vanity is probably a more potent combination. Personally, I wouldn’t say that hair is particularly important when looking for a sexual partner. Do you see narcissism as something that is damaging, or can it be healthy? For example, an acceptance - or at least an understanding - of self-absorption resulting in a form of self-recognition that is more genuine‌?
Autre Ne Veut
In order to thrive in society a baseline degree of narcissism is essential. The personality disorder is marked by this to an unhealthy degree. Have you ever had an anxiety attack before/during/as the result of a haircut? Almost certainly before or after, but likely not because of one. Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) and Joel Ford played on Anxiety. They both have a fair amount of hair.
Features
Did this affect the record in any way? Certainly, especially insofar as Joel spent some time braiding his hair Ă la Willie Nelson and Dan probably trimmed his beard one or two times over the month and a half that we were in the studio. Autre Ne Veut plays at Madame Moustache, Brussels on 19 April.

Scene Report
In this month’s Scene Report we shed our lights on the thriving music scene of Vienna, Austria. You might think that’s a weird city to dig into music-wise, but hold on! We asked Ulrich Rois, representative of the Viennese underground and the man behind Feathered Coyote Records, to explore his social circle. We discovered unexpected liaisons between the Austrian and the Belgian avant-garde... Text by Ulrich Rois Photos shot by Johannes Schebler and Michaele Konrad in Vienna, Austria
The line-up of Springtime Ceremony who play in Scheld’apen (A Story of Rats, González & Steenkiste, Vallonia and Bird People) on April 8 is a good place to start our exploration. A Story of Rats and González & Steenkiste have both released on my label and David Edran (Hare Akedod), our host in Scheld’apen, has released a fantastic tape by Raju Arara, a project by Belgian/Austrian designer/musician Rani Bageria. Besides running Feathered Coyote Records and playing music in Bird People, I occasionally organize shows. I prefer off-spaces rather than
clubs because these venues basically have a better vibe. For example: mo.ë, runned by Max Bogner, known for his great music as Margaret Unknown and Vekks, lead by Georg Stejskal. One of the bands on the Tom Carter(*) concert I organized last year, Primordial Undermind, has become a vital part of the local musical landscape since the American duo Eric and Vanessa Arn relocated to Vienna some years ago. They have performed on CabaRet Dr StranGe in Scheld’apen in February 2012, to complete the Belgian/Austrian connection. Other contributors to that Page 27

‘This devotion and a certain freedom of expression are the common denominators in our scene, more than a certain style or genre.’ benefit, Tornado Victory, Torùn, 23:00 AM, Serge Öhn and Toni Traubensaft, are all working on new recordings at the moment. What else is happening? VIV, a new project by Stefan Kushima looks very promising and so does Thunderdrone (Sami from LIFETIME). The fresh DIY record store Transformer is bound to become a great hangout spot for underground music addicts. It means a lot to me to collaborate with passionate artists all over the world. That especially makes it fulfilling for myself. This devotion and a certain freedom of expression are the common denominators in our scene, more than a certain style or genre. Feathered Coyote will release a new batch of tapes soon, including albums by Sashash Ulz, Eric Arn, Pandelindio and a tour split by A Story of Rats and Bird People. Check them out on http://featheredcoyoterecords. bandcamp.com/. (*) In the spring of 2012, Tom Carter, master guitarist and explor-
er of the outer realms of contemporary psychedelia, was taken ill while on tour in Europe. He was hospitalized with a severe case of pneumonia in Berlin and had to stay in intensive care. To help him deal with the unexpected costs of medical treatment abroad and the loss of income from touring, many friends and fans have started to organize benefit events. Springtime Ceremony : A Story Of Rats (solo), Bird People, Vallonia and Gonzalez & Steenkiste all play at Scheld’apen, Antwerp on 08 April. The show is free for Subbacultcha! members.

Michael Morrison, also known as Octo Octa, makes melancholic, retrosounding house music and is among the more accessible and danceable artists on the 100% Silk roster. House and techno addicts emDJee and Jan Techniks will burn down the place (or whatever’s left of it) after his show.
Sinkane
07 April - Trix, Antwerp 19.30 | €14 | Free for Subbacultcha! members
Ahmed Gallab’s music as Sinkane results in a project that is part indie-rock, part Afro-funk, yet synth-heavy and distinctly his own. On his most recent LP Mars, Gallab collaborated with Twin Shadow’s George Lewis and Yeasayer’s Ira Wolf, delivering his best effort yet.

Nü Sensae
14 April - Madame Moustache, Brussels 20.00 | €5 | Free for Subbacultcha! members
Vancouver trio Nü Sensae rekindle the incendiary sound of riot grrrlish bands like Babes in Toyland and L7, but these guys don’t beat a dead horse, they beat three dead horses called noise, punk, and grunge so relentlessly that nothing really resembles its original form and you’re so traumatized you forget all about the past and simply nod your head numbed by the bloody mess in front of you.
Sun Araw + Elg + Heavy Hyenas 16 April - Les Ateliers Claus, Brussels 20.00 | €10 | Free for Subbacultcha! members
Sun Araw’s work goes beyond the galaxy of psychedelia to a cosmos whose planets drip with a primordial ooze of dub, desert rock, raga, Afrobeat and free jazz. In 2012 he recorded a sort of psychedelic gospel album with roots reggae legends The Congos, but his solo work, perhaps buoyed by a puff of doobage, should also elevate you to that ‘higher ground’ you’ve heard so much about.
Film: Berberian Sound Studio 17 April - KASKcinema, Ghent 20.30 | €5 | Free for Subbacultcha! members
Directed by Peter Strickland, this meta-film pays homage not only to Italy’s delightful low budget horror genre but to the mechanisms of cinema itself. The film’s soundtrack is masterfully composed by British electronic band Broadcast. Page 37

Ekin Sana and Berna Göl have been laying dusky vocals over throbbing synth lines since self-releasing their first album as Kim Ki O in 2007. Now, this Istanbul duo is hauling back their cloudy electropop to Belgium, celebrating the release of their new album Grounds.
Autre Ne Veut
19 April - Madame Moustache, Brussels 20.00 | €8 | Free for Subbacultcha! members
After spending a sabbatical writing commercial jingles for a production house, Brooklyn’s Arthur Ashin found himself trying his own hand at pop music, ultimately resulting in Autre Ne Veut. On his freshly released sophomore album, Anxiety, Ashin reveals a more fleshed out and bombastic version of the arty avant-R&B of his 2010 debut.
Wolf Eyes + André Stordeur
22 April - Magasin 4, Brussels 19.00 | €10 | Free for Subbacultcha! members

Group Bombino 10 April - Ancienne Belgique, Brussels The latest vanguard of the Tuareg revolution, Group Bombino are yet another discovery put out by Sublime Frequencies. Cut off from the rest of Niger, this is authentic protest music from the desert: its dry riffs and grooves carrying messages of hope, justice and desire for validation. Their new album Nomad comes out this month and is produced by The Black Keys’ guitarist Dan Auerbach.
A-Track ft. Flying Horseman, Mittland Och Leo, Dans Dans, Eric Thielemans 12 + 13 April - Concertgebouw, Brugge On the first edition of A-Track, Flying Horseman core member Bert Dockx curates two nights of music and art. Sun Araw + Elg + Heavy Hyenas 16 April - Les Ateliers Claus, Brussels Cameron Stallones is a founder of the experimental psych-rock collective Magic Lantern, but his work as Sun Araw goes beyond the galaxy of psychedelia to a cosmos whose planets drip with a primordial ooze of dub, desert rock, raga, Afrobeat and free jazz. Shows in April
al noises chase his distant voice through a landscape of droning bass and drums, reminiscent of eighties punk fuzz and new wave.
Autre Ne Veut 19 April - Madame Moustache, Brussels On his freshly released sophomore album Anxiety, Autre Ne Veut reveals a more fleshed out and bombastic version of the arty avant-R&B of his 2010 debut. Read more on page 38?
Wolf Eyes 22 April - Magasin 4, Brussels The seminal noise band of the noughties is touring again and that’s more than enough reason to rejoice! Find out why they’re considered one of the world’s most intense live acts yourself.
Rene Hell + Container + Laser Poodle 22 April - Les Ateliers Claus, Brussels Jeff Witscher aka Rene Hell has been producing a unique mix of noise, drone and ambient music on his synthesizers for quite some time, putting out many albums and collaborating with Wet Hair and Oneohtrix Point Never. Also on the line-up are Philadelphia-based Container and the broken techno duo Laser Poodle.
Sheniqua World Tour + 18+ 26 April - Soscastoa, Ghent 18+ and Sheniqua World Tour recycle pop culture garbage. Read more on page 39.
Naam 27 April - Kavka, Antwerp With a second album out this summer, Naam are bringing their swirls of blissed-
out jam-heavy psychedelia to Kavka. Read more on page 39.
Tim Hecker & Daniel Lopatin 27 April - STUK, Leuven Most recently, Tim Hecker collaborated with Daniel Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never on Instrumental Tourist, a spontaneous but cohesive and highly pleasurable fusion of their respective sounds. Their blend of techno and drones is among the most instantly recognisable and distinctive ambient music being released today.
Here’s Your Future Festival 28 April - 013, Tilburg The first edition of Here’s Your Future featured a blazing performance by the now recognized as Son-of-Rock-God Ty Segall back when he was but a humble ax slinger. And as not to dissapoint, 013 has indeed cooked up another sick line-up this year. Read more on page 39.
The Walkmen 30 April - Vaartkapoen, Brussels Formed in 2000, NYC indie-rockers The Walkmen’s critically acclaimed 2012 effort Heaven was hailed as very mature in sound, yet long-term fans may yearn for the beautiful dramatic instability of the early years.
Bozar Electronic Night 30 April - Bozar, Brussels The cutting edge of experimental electronics, pop, dance and ambience. This year’s line-up offers the ever fantastic Tri Angle producer Holy Other, Belgium’s best kept secret Cupp Cave and the prince of pastiche James Ferraro. His flow of CD-R’s, tapes and vinyl have captured moments of off-the-cuff nonsense as well as moments of electronic pop genius. Page 45
