This month Hippies. They’re back! Hallelujah! Sure, we agree, it is perfectly OK to hate hippies. But this is 2009. And in 2009 hippies not only eat and talk about apples, they have ‘em. And they carry them around in their backpacks, you know... you gotta be connected. And they are clean and wear skinny jeans and are actually capable of producing stuff instead of smoking it. And you know, it’s good stuff... Like environmentally friendly bicycle tyres or good food from animals that have had a good life or pro Obama blogs or albums like Merriweather Post Pavilion; with sounds of the ‘70s hidden in layers of noise and synth hysteria. And that’s the metaphor. You too are like that record. A hippie hidden in layers of the modern age. The very useful modern age. stuck and STOCKing up in STOCKholm

’m in Stockholm, Sweden, the home of POP music—noisy escapades are saved for their Finnish neighbours. Josh Rouse just did a solo gig, playing old and new songs to a sold out room. He may be cheesy as hell but he sure knows how to stimulate the love vibrations. OK Sweden. First off, The Tallest Man on Earth. His album Shal6

low Grave is a classic and his live performances are intense. Also, the new songs from Friska Viljor are destined to be hit singles. Away from Scandinavia, fans of the folky persuasion should be pleased because the start of 2009 brings some really nice albums. DM Stith will release Heavy Ghost on Asthmatic Kitty. This album will bring him fame. If you think An-

fresh

thony (yes, the one with the Johnsons) is rather pathetic, DM Stith is the solution. Want something more moody? Puerto Muerto, Bill Callahan (YES!), Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Marissa Nadler, Vetiver and M. Ward all have lovely new records. Too depressive and melancholic? Tweak Bird were one of the sensations of last winter’s ATP. They’ll be working on a new album in April and touring Europe in summer. Think Death from Above 79 and Big Business. Too old school for you? Dananananaykroyd (don’t ask me how many nanana’s but their music’s really good) will go on tour with the Kaiser Chiefs and play London Calling in May, so we’ll definitely hear more from these Scottish kids. Already arrived but still amazing: The Thermals. There’s the new single ‘When I Died’ and on 7 April the album Now We Can See. The Wooden Shjips can not only count to two in Spanish—Dos will be one of the best psychedelic albums of 2009. Still psychedelic but more radiofriendly is Labyrinthes from our

French-speaking Canadian friends Malajube. Enough guitar. Thunderheist’s debut album is out in March on Big Dada (you can stream it on the label’s website). ‘Sweet 16’ is the first single and disco will be back on the agenda. More Canadian party tunes: MSTRKFT release Fist of God this month, YACHT will finally have a full release on DFA and label-mates The Juan Maclean know that The Future Will Come. Maybe a synth nod to Obamaland? For trusted regulars, head back to the ‘80s with a new Harmonic 313 (Mark Pritchard) album on Warp sometime around April. Good ol’ favs Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tortoise, Pan*American and ...Trail of Dead also have new products lined up. But what about new sounds? Sub Pop signed a ‘60s sounding garage rock group from NY called Obits; there’s a self-release by Motorik; and check out Baltimore trio Double Dagger. But it’s back to Sweden for my tip of the month: Fever Ray. Already remixed by Familjen and Fuck Buttons, this is the darkest love vibration you can get. end 7

It could be a passing trend. After all, quoting past decades, both in music and fashion, is pretty much commonplace these days and will probably continue as such until we finally start running around in silver space suits. But the quantity in which the new hippie styles are popping up, as well as the way they permeate through many aspects of society does get you thinking—maybe there is some kind of connection between the way things were in the ’60s and the way they are now? Let’s ask a few people who might know. First up is Nico Wilterdink. He is professor for cultural sociology at the UvA. Also, he has a beard. Hopefully he can help me find out what brought back the hippies. A good starting point may be the Vietnam War – a war waged by the USA in a faraway country, perceived as senseless by pretty much everyone, especially by all hippies, and triggering widespread protests. The past few years have seen quite a few mass demonstrations against the war in Iraq as well. That’s a pretty obvious parallel then, right? Wilterdink isn’t convinced. ‘Well, of

course you can compare these protests. But the anti-Vietnam protests were much grimmer, much more intense. The anti-war sentiment is nowadays much less manifested than it was then. You have to realise that back then, in the States, many more people were actually drafted and had to fight in that war – it presented a much more immediate danger.’ Okay, figured that. But Wilterdink does agree it’s noteworthy that it’s really fashionable nowadays to be on the political left again. ‘These things come in waves,’ he says. After the hippies, in the ’80s came the yuppies and conservativism became popular even among young people. It’s called, says Wilterdink, ‘the mechanism of distinction.’ Then, helped by George W Bush’s general clumsiness, conservativism went out of vogue again, and the next wave has swung back to the left. Easy. It’s a similar story with the organic food supermarkets. Firstly, it wasn’t actually hippies that invented back-to-nature food. ‘At the end of the 19th century there were already movements that promoted continue 13

‘Well,’ Flegel says, ‘I just think eating organic food and the concepts of macrobiotic food and veg- it makes sense that people still lisetarianism,’ says Wilterdink. But back to the hippies: been disproved and the hippies so you don’t think they are back aren’t really back after all. It’s all either, then, despite all those new just natural, tidal developments sunshine sounds? ‘I honestly don’t see much of in society. So why, dear Pat Flegel from the band Women, do you and a parallel,’ he says, ‘cause none of your colleagues all sound as if you these bands are really political.’ Thankfully, I’ve already learned had flowers in your hair? 14

words and gestures and facial expressions. It was believed that the world had been created by a female power, and intuition was important. With writing came rules, and the major monotheistic religions, and male domination. And then, television was invented, and all of a sudden there were images over images – and the hippies were the first generation that grew up with that. And nowadays, we’re even further! Now we have mass dyslexia! And the kids are busy with changing the world again. They have that mentality, because they grew up in a world filled with images. It’s fantastic!’ Ah ha! So the hippies are back! ‘Well,’ says de Ridder, ‘I wouldn’t say the hippies are back. But the mentality from the ’60s, that is back, for sure.’ In the meantime, something else to ponder: there’s something really weird and interesting going on in the world of film director David Lynch. He’s established a foundation with the aim of teaching transcendental meditation to a million school kids. That’s the same meditation technique that 16

The Beatles tried out when they travelled to India, did lots of drugs and then (some say unfortunately) found a sitar lying around. Incidentally, Paul McCartney is helping Lynch’s foundation by performing at a benefit concert (with or without a sitar isn’t confirmed yet). The event is titled The World Harmony Concert, and the foundation aims to ‘change the world overnight’, with the ultimate goal of nothing less than world peace. Just imagine: a million kids! So even if the hippies might not really be back after all (David Lynch excluded), it seems to be only a matter of time. Just wait another 15 years, past the ’90s revival and the next variants of ’20s, ’50s and ’80s revivalism; and if Lynch succeeds, there’ll be more hippies than you can shake a stick at. A whole generation of them, in fact. And then – don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with sunshine pop or even with world peace, but incense sticks really do give me a headache – yes, then it’ll be time to break out those punk records again.

My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair...But Now They’re Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows. Begin jaren zeventig scoorden ze zelfs een flink aantal hits, waaronder ‘Get It On’ en ‘Telegram Sam’.

The Fabulous Stains is sinds eind 2008 verkrijgbaar op dvd (Regio 1). end 33

“Why can’t we all just get along?”

march 01, patronaat, haarlem Fuzz, bangs, crunch and ‘oooh aaah’ melodies. That’s what you get from San Franciscan art noise experimentalist Aria C Jalali, the mind and body behind Railcars. It’s lo-fi synth pop with the emphasis on the lo-fi, the synth and the pop. Occasional cutesy casiotones make us pine for long-lost indie poppers John Wayne Shot Me, but there’s also a dirtier noise in action here – aided by the sublime techniques of Xiu Xiu frontman Jamie Stewart, producer of last year’s ‘Cities vs. Submarines’ 7”. On this tour, Jalali is joined by electronic drum box whiz Navid Nakhaee and the live visuals of Fez Adel, ensuring a crazy, sensory experience.

Panther

march 07, bitterzoet, amsterdam Work your body, work, work your body for duo Charles Salas-Humara and Joe Kelly, AKA Panther. This Portland based duo have a groove and they know how to use it. Bringing some James Brown soul swagger to the world of indie rock they have caught the eyes and ears of bands like Gossip and Ratatat and found themselves signed to Kill Rock Stars, which ain’t a bad place to be. With Kelly laying down powerful beats, Salas-Humara will blow your mind with energetic exuberance, howling falsetto vocals, disco riffs and even occasional bouts of bowed cello. Embrace the cat fever. 37
