The Bully Issue

From the fat, anger-fuelled 15-year-old, threatening to crush you with his immense weight, to that annoying little scamp, trying to pull your tattoo choker time and time again: during high school the bullies reign. But from graduation onwards, it all goes downhill for them, with nothing left but fading hometown glory. That’s when the lives of the real cool kids commence, sparking with fun – especially if they’re a Subbacultcha member. So never be fooled by first impressions, as you’ll figure out by reading this issue. Because even though his tunes sound dark, King Dude’s a true sweetheart, just like Daniel Bachman and Sinkane.

Lisa Willeboordse and Stephan Junglas are DUO° BARABARA, a multidisciplinary design duo that creates contemporary works from abundant materials, and finds inspiration on the streets and while travelling. Their current project, Kusaga, took them to Zanzibar, where they gave plastic waste some attention and four wheels!

Brussels producer Le Motel, aka Fabien Leclercq, has been turning heads with his ethereal yet saucy productions. Describing it as ‘the sound of a violent car crash somewhere in the Amazonian jungle’ would come close, but it wouldn’t be doing the man justice. This 22-year-old displays a rare skill, and manages to capture the silence after the crash equally well. From ‘Pollen’, his collab with fellow prodigies Yellowstraps, which was endorsed by Lefto, to his remix of Jeremih’s ‘Fuck You All the Time’, Le Motel’s blowing up the house.

A spiritual connection to the Eighties? Mirror Kisses, also known as ESPRIT 空想, definitely has one. George Clanton manages to embody Depeche Mode, New Order and The Jesus and Mary Chain, still displaying the vigour these bands once had. Originating from the SPF420 platform, he mixes up sounds usually reserved for the likes of Rustie or XXYYXX, and uses them all to his advantage to make what we can only describe as the future of new wave. We’ll refer you to the internet for full-blown anthems like ‘Kill You in Bed’ or ‘Keep a Secret’, or the awesome, Miami Viceevoking ‘Runaways’.

We Visit You: Lola Pertsowsky Photo by Stephen Freeman

This Is The Kit… such dreamy voices. What’s the first record you bought? Gala’s single ‘Freed From Desire’. Your first ever music-related memory? Reading the back of a children’s music tape imitating my older brother reading the back of a Nirvana record at breakfast. What’s your favourite pastime? Swimming in the waves of Oléron island in the summer. And taking pictures, of course. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Eating a lot of good food and lying at home under the only ray of sun that comes in. Any guilty pleasures? Lying in bed with my hairdryer as a blanket heater. Any regrets recently? Mhh... Hakuna matata. What makes you dance? ‘Chaud Boulet’, a song by Hoquets. Which Subbacultcha show did you enjoy lately? Le Colisée played De Kreun last month, they’re the sweetest Belgian band!

Name: Lola Pertsowsky Age: 26 Home: Brussels Zodiac sign: Taurus Website: lolapertsowsky.com Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m a photographer, currently completing my master’s at Sint-Lukas in Brussels. What projects are you working on? I’m working on an edition of my series of photographs Spelunca, and I’m preparing a group show called Ithaka 23 that will take place in Leuven from 23 March. What inspires you? The way my friends live their lives. Some play music, some are artists, some are a bit lost… And walking, feeling displaced. What do you like best about your place? It’s on the top floor and I can almost feel it swing when the wind’s blowing hard. What’s the best way to make a bully shut up? Stick your fingers up his nose. He won’t expect that! What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Panda Bear, Babe, Rozi Plain and

The Bully Issue. Interview A folk singer-turned-rocker for the fallen angel Lucifer, chanting about spiritual themes and epic battles between good and evil? No wonder founder of the Not Just Religious Music label TJ Cowgill can come across as a pretty dark character

King Dude Interview by Julien Van de Casteele Photos shot by Angel Ceballos in Seattle, Washington

at first. But as the ironic quality of his moniker, King Dude, gives way, there’s lingering positivity behind this facade of first impressions: ‘There is hope and salvation for all through song itself. There is sacred divinity for all who seek it out’

14

15

The Bully Issue. Interview

16

King Dude. Continued What was the idea behind creating your own label, Not Just Religious Music? Well, I think I realised at some point that it would be easier if I just did it all myself. It’s nothing against the labels I was working with at the time – in fact, I love those labels – but when I looked at [my clothing label] Actual Pain and what I did there, I thought it would be very easy for me to do with a record label as well. I felt the need to have total control of the music I make, from the beginning to the end. Where do you take inspiration for all this darkness and the religious themes in your music? You know, I don’t really think of my music as dark per se, but I can understand how other people do… I guess my music has a certain quality to it that some people find dark. Religion is something that’s always interested me since I was a child, I guess it has something to do with the childhood I had. What was growing up like for you? Were you brought up in a religious family? After my parents divorced my father became involved in evangelical Christianity and my mother inversely practiced her own form of pagan New-Age religion. My mother taught me to meditate and read tarot while my father’s church taught how those types of things were secular at best and devil worship at worst. I had to split my time growing up between both households and so I’m sure that definitely had something to do with my interest in religion. What’s the message in your music? There are many different messages in my music. Ultimately, the underlying message might be something like, there is hope and salvation for all through song itself. There is sacred divinity for all who seek it out.

17

King Dude. Continued ‘I’m fascinated by cults and the people that are drawn to them, it’s really a very interesting subject’ Your songs aren’t necessarily all negative and sad; some have glimmers of positivity. Yes, I agree. Most of these songs are meant to be uplifting, but they all have another element to them as well. Revenge, murder, hatred; all these themes can be paired perfectly with love. It’s almost impossible for me to find love without finding some of those negative or sad themes along the way. Are you part of a religious group or cult? What are your feelings towards them? I’m not affiliated with any religious group or cult… Who would admit to being in a cult, though? I’m fascinated by cults and the people that are drawn to them, it’s really a very interesting subject. Do you think people can misinterpret what King Dude is about? Sure, people do that all the time. But it is their God-given right to interpret King Dude however they wish. What’s going on in the near future for the band? I have a new record coming out in June, called Songs of Flesh & Blood – In The Key of Light and I’ll be on tour in Europe, from March through the end of May.

King Dude plays Het Bos, Antwerp on 08 April, together with Slumberland. The show is free for Subbacultcha members.

The Bully Issue. Interview With two new releases in the pipeline, on Three Lobed Recordings and Feeding Tube, Daniel Bachman is one of the important faces of the resurgence of American Primitive, making the world a better place

Daniel Bachman Interview by Maarten Van Nieuwenhove - Photos shot by Daniel Bachman in Durham, North Carolina - Pimped by Amber Pelegrin

with his fast-paced fingerpicking. Between boiling tea and buying a rug, he told us about high school, screaming, cooking for a hundred people and the world’s tendency to hammer us down 20

21

Daniel Bachman. Continued How was your time in high school? It was rough [Laughs]. I dropped out, even, because I hated it so much. I went to this rednecky high school, old and from the Sixties, where kids would get into fights all the time. It was cool, actually. But then I ended up going to this rich-kid high school, trying to get into this better music programme. But these rich kids were horrible. That’s when I asked my parents to be home schooled, doing correspondence classes. I had this little closet in the office my mom had in town, where I would just type and type. Probably for the best. The year I dropped out, I went on tour for the first time. People tend to think folk musicians live a more secluded life than the rest of us. Is that true in your case? When I go on my next tour, I’m gonna be gone for seven weeks. So there’s, like, a week or two where I kinda go without seeing anybody. I just wanna hang out with my girlfriend, watch movies. And I’m definitely into routine, but I like to go out and host parties. We just had a big one over the weekend with a hundred people in our house. We cooked food for everybody and then we had music. I mean, I like to scream and shout, to get wild, although my music isn’t necessarily like that [Laughs]. You’ve got to cope with this whole legacy of predecessors. Isn’t it paralysing sometimes? I kinda use it to my advantage. I think right now is the best time actually to create, ’cause there’s just so much stuff to draw on. I don’t think it gives any less power. This industry is known to be a tough one. How difficult has it been for you? At first, I literally played hundreds of shows to no one. But I never really thought of it as being difficult, because I never thought of it as being my actual job.

22

23

The Bully Issue. Interview

24

Daniel Bachman. Continued Is there something else you see yourself doing, later on? In an ideal world I’d like this to be a part of what I do for ever. But I wouldn’t mind having a job that provides a bit more security. I’d like to own a house someday, and some land. Now it’s really hard to tell if it’s gonna be a good year or a bad year. But I haven’t had a bad year yet. We’re pretty young, so the world hasn’t totally hammered us into the ground yet [Laughs]. What is it that you think attracts people to your music, and to folk in general? You can do something with very little, very limited. You can sing, or not sing, or maybe have a small string band, but it’s always very tiny. Where do you draw inspiration from? Right now I’m trying to learn, like, five specific tunes, which is something I haven’t really done before. This next record is gonna be a lot of stuff I probably didn’t write. But it’ll have its own vibe, it won’t be straight textbook tunes. The guitar player of Canned Heat, this big psychedelic country blues band from the Sixties, has a version, called ‘Blind Lemon’, of a Son House song. And now I’m trying to make my version. But it’s badass. In order to get the motion and the feel of it across, you really have to know it up and down. What would you do if your kids get bullied? Someday I’m gonna try to get my kids hanging out with the kids that bullied me and the kids that were just super nerds that I hung out with. If that doesn’t work, they get to be homeschooled too, ’cause it worked out pretty well, I’m not a complete weirdo [Laughs].

Sinkane

by Samuel Monkarsh Before launching his solo project and creating a resourceful and highly likeable melting pot of genres, multi-instrumentalist Ahmed Gallab was thriving alongside bands such as Caribou, of Montreal and Yeasayer as a session musician. Demonstrating a colourful patchwork of inspirations throughout his latest LP, strikingly called Mean Love, this Sudanese-American sweetheart swings between upbeat African tempos, melancholic jazzy ballads and dreamy shoegaze. Armed with a voice that caresses the heights and with diabolically hip-moving rhythms, he creates this wonderfully feverish soundtrack for all the good moments in life 27

Underneath this abstraction lie a myriad of uses of media and devices – with screen print and moving image as protagonists – and digital and analogue processes. These images can be seen as the residue of an interplay between these different media and devices. With a strong playfulness towards colour and shape, Van Daele redesigns these ‘residues’ into prints for T-shirts and sweaters. The Source The Untold Story of Father Yod, YaHoWha 13, and The Source Family by Isis Aquarian & Electricity Aquarian This is the story of James Edward Baker, who, after serving during World War II, mastered the art of Jujitsu and headed for LA to pursue a career as a stuntman. A growing interest in spirituality coupled with his incredible charisma made him irresistible to the guru-seeking youth of late Sixties Hollywood. He opened a vegetarian restaurant, The Source, which became a hotspot for top-tier celebrities and flower children alike. An embodiment of the ultimate California maverick, equal parts entrepreneur, spiritual leader and rumoured outlaw, James Baker was no more, and Father Yod and the Source Family were born. In other words, he started a cult. In the Source Family, Father Yod cut a paradoxical figure. His rules followed the patriarchal, scheming model of most sects – he mandated the sexual dynamics (which,

shockingly, were markedly favourable to him), imposed a score of pseudo-religious commandments and penalised all who disobeyed. And yet while reading this account – written by one of his paramours – you can't help but feel warmth towards a man who, to all intents and purposes, was a sociopath. Father Yod made dreams come true: dreams of art and music, of sexual freedom, of an idyllic life and of eternal youth. While it's no surprise that the group dissolved after Father Yod's death in that infamous paragliding accident, the Source Family experiment was a fascinating one. It's a testament to a time we all yearn for, the kind that cannot be un-cynically replicated today.

Courtisane Festival 2015

Every year spring sets in motion a metamorphosis of the world as we know it. It hovers over our winters like a promise but when it finally comes around it’s like nothing we expected. Since 2002 Courtisane Festival has amplified this feeling of promise for all lovers of cinema, reminding us of the complexities born from another kind of metamorphosis. Cinema brings together, albeit for a short instant, seemingly distant interpretations of our world, hopes, dreams and fears, much like a prism bundling a broad spectrum of light. This year’s programme offers a wide array of new and old work built up around two ‘artists in focus’. One could say Pedro Costa’s and Thom Andersen’s works are worlds apart, but nevertheless they share certain sensibilities and concerns. Courtisane is about re-imagining countless associations and disassociations in the midst of a chamber of resonances. ‘And as we are all here, perhaps we can ask ourselves: what is it that we can do together?’ Courtisane Festival: 01-05 april, at various locations in Ghent. Check www.sabzian.be for our selection.

Films Vincente Minnelli Retrospective

Vincente Minnelli started working as a costume designer on Broadway, at which he was very successful. Later he worked as a set designer with even greater success and finally started directing stage plays. In 1943 he accepted the invitation from MGM to direct his first musical film, Cabin in the Sky, and went on to be one of the most popular film directors in Hollywood. If Minnelli didn’t invent Technicolor, he sure was the one for whom it was conceived. He was admired or dismissed as a pure stylist who believed more in beauty than in art: Minnelli, the master of the decorative image, on the far side of paradise. If he has a fatal, hapless flaw, it is his naïve belief that style can transcend substance and that our way of looking at the world is more important than the world itself. He alone has the key to this wild parade. Now on view at Cinematek in Brussels. The retrospective takes place at Cinematek, Brussels until 16 May.

King Dude’s music is a mixture of country, blues, folk and heavy metal that results in diverse and captivating songs. Dark, melancholic, haunting and, at times, downright scary songs. However, according to the man himself, not all is lost. While the general atmosphere of the music is grim, most songs are also uplifting. Oscar for best movie and best director, among others, Michael Keaton incarnates Riggan Thomson, a once famous Hollywood star thanks to his performance as the superhero Birdman. As his celebrity is fading, he wants to reinvent himself via a Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver’s short story, ‘What We Talk About When We Talk About Love’. A tailor-made role for Keaton (who formerly played Beetlejuice and Batman) to be enjoyed through the impressive singleshot vision of movie director Alejandro González Iñárritu.

highly likeable melting pot of genres. Demonstrating a colourful patchwork of inspirations throughout his latest LP, Mean Love, Sinkane swings between upbeat African tempos, melancholic jazzy ballads and dreamy shoegaze. Armed with a voice that caresses the heights and with diabolically hip-moving rhythms, he’s prepared a mesmerising performance for a feverish evening.

The KVB

10 April - Cactus, Brugge 20.00 | €11 | Free for members With the Breaking Waves concert series, Cactus presents treasures from underworld of the contemporary music scene. Back in 2010 The KVB saw the light – the light of moody grey day, filled to the brim with rain. UK duo Nicholas Wood and Kat Day go for heavily distorted synths and new wave-y bass lines, making dark, addictive candy for your ears, savoured especially by fans of My Bloody Valentine and The Soft Moon.

musicians that back him. Support is provided by Daniel Bachman, another lovely folky guitar picker, with a very different sound.

Film: Anger and Beyond - Chomont + Smith 20 April - OFFoff, Ghent 20.30 | tba | Free for members

Screaming Females 18 April - Madame Moustache, Brussels 20.00 | €8 | Free for members

OFFoff uses Kenneth Anger’s Fireworks, the first gay film publicly screened in America, as a point of departure for this next chapter in the Anger and Beyond series. Oblivion and Razor Head, early films by Tom Chomont, show that Chomont’s style is closely affiliated with Anger’s lyrical and rhythmic style, ranging from dreamy filmic portraits of his friends to a rougher fascination for SM. The colourful Respectable Creatures and Jungle Island prove Jack Smith is this other great authority in the history of American experimental and queer cinema.

US outfit Screaming Females brings the refreshing nostalgia and honest-sounding roughness of a simple old rock trio and their garage sound. With leading lady Marissa Paternoster, Jarrett Dougherty on the drums and King Mike on the bass, Screaming Females brings back that basement-concerts vibe, full of memories of your teenage years. Now’s retro, with the natural passion and authenticity of grungy riffs, hoarse vocals and imperfect sound.

others, including his brother. The other locals, fuelled by traditional superstitions, blame him for the accident and he quickly becomes an outcast. For Those in Peril is a moody psychodrama that sucks you into the skewed view of a desperate, tormented mind.

23 April - Beursschouwburg, Brussels 20.30 | €13 | Free for members Sleaford Mods: two foul-mouthed Englishmen spitting on contemporary society, pop culture, modern working life and everything else they don’t agree with. They attack ‘focking email’, Brian Eno and crappy bands with ‘loads of online fans’. Sleaford Mods genially combines brutal honesty with lots of silliness. Accompanied by diverse, unpredictable beats combining hip hop, electronic music and punk, Sleaford Mods’ music is highly entertaining, and enlightening at the same time. Critical voices are an important part of society, or as Seaford Mods put it: ‘You got to be cruel to be kind.’

Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) + Daan Vandewalle

25 April - Concertstudio (Festival van Kortrijk), Kortrijk 19.00 | €16 | Free for members Opera, Quasi Fortississimo is the result of the more than exciting team-up of Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier and Belgian concert pianist Daan Vandewalle. Specialising in performing contemporary American music, Vandewalle has even worked with Sonic Youth. Both artists studied at the infamous Mills College, but Sauniers’ idea to compose an evening-filling piano piece dates from 2010, when he, as curator of Sonic City in De Kreun, invited Vandewalle for a concert. And here we are, five years later, for an adventurous confrontation! Icing on the cake: Festival van Kortrijk invites you to the world première.

Film: Anger and Beyond: California Dreaming

26 April-28 June - Argos, Brussels Wed-Sun 11.00-18.00 | €5 | Free for members

27 April - OFF, Ghent 20.30 | €7 | Free for members

After the wonderful first part, the second part of this exhibition explores how contemporary artists deal with found footage and images. Whereas found footage actually is the use of footage as a found object, this practice has been largely exploited by video artists. Partly in relation to cinema history, the notion of storytelling and our society, the exhibition presents a kaleidoscope of images and sequences that belong to our collective memory, but at the same time force the spectator to question social stereotypes, cinematic norms and models.

As a member of the Californian bohemia, Anger and like-minded cineastes operated in the cinematographic twilight zone in between art and occultism. Anger’s Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome features a whole pantheon of mythical figures. In Aleph, Wallace Berman shows his fascination for Kabbalah and Gnosticism via super 8 footage and hand-painted Hebrew letters. Also on the bill: Curtis Harrington’s The Wormwood Star and the dreamy short Picnic, about death and dark eroticism.

01 May - KVS, Brussels 14.00-21.00 | tba | Free for members

If you thought Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons was only destined to be listened to by your old granny on her dusty record player, guess again. Pieter Ampe and Benjamin Verdonck are tackling the masterpiece. As time goes by, the seasons shift on stage, following their own logic. What impact do these constantly changing circumstances have on these men? Can they stand firm amidst these changes, or do they become the plaything of the increasing chaos? An inventive visual performance, produced by KVS, Toneelhuis and CAMPO.

A seven-hour performance, recorded by dozens of cameras and then endlessly repeated, to mercilessly expose an arbitrary system that attempts to silence any critical voice. This is Trial About Fake, a documentary project by the Brussels filmmaker Manu Riche and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. As Ai Weiwei is China’s most renowned artist, his critical voice is more often than not silenced. On charges of tax evasion, he was put behind bars for months and after a show trial lasting one day, he was ordered to pay a heavy fine. Reason enough for Manu Riche to reconstruct this trial, turning it into a documentary project.

Agenda. Focus By Gabriela Gazova

Rewire Festival Contemporary, adventurous, experimental and multidisciplinary: that’s Rewire Festival in a nutshell. The beauty and mystery of this eclectic fest come from the organisers’ fascination with the openness of various forms and blends of music, sound art and performances. It’s all good, but here are a few extra-special treats we picked out from the wide-ranging programme 01-02 May - various locations, The Hague

Grouper

Evian Christ

Grouper The impressionistic, often minimalistic and ambient-based songs of Liz Harris not only have a calming effect, but also evoke a deeper emotional involvement through the vocals, visuals (films by Paul Clipson) and attentively used field recordings.

er beats, somewhere at the crossroads between freaked ambience and sparse, twisted R&B. Accompanied by live visuals by Emmanuel Biard the experience becomes both thrilling and intense. Oren Ambarchi Experimentation in its truest form is what Oren Ambarchi crafts and takes to another level. Creating mostly instrumental works, with a focus on electric guitar, Ambarchi researches, rediscovers and reinvents the possibilities of regular instruments. Offering a dynamic and captivating blend of sounds and melodies he also touches on frequently examined musical genres from an absolutely opposite point of view, making his work layered and arousing curiosity.

Powell Working with analogue noise and recordings, connecting instruments and samples, Powell delivers a hauntingly powerful mix of experimental sound art and catchy rhythms. The structure of his sets is present but impossible to rely on – which, combined with the noise-sample palette, makes for an unmissable sound.
