The Young Creatives Issue
The good things in life, to whom do you owe them? The tooth fairy? Your local brewer? Guess again. From the exhibitions you visit in between coffee breaks on lazy Sundays in the city, to the stories you plunge into on those grey rainy days and the tunes you dance to like a maniac: they’re all provided by the creatives. And whether you’re just tinkering with the brightly coloured wrappings of long-eaten easter eggs or covering whole buildings in fabric, as long as you’re keeping the dream alive, you’re doing it right. Just like the young creatives on which whom shed some light in this month’s issue.

June recommendations This month the young creatives provide you with a selection of the finer things in life.
Music: BIRP
Magazine: TUIG
Founded in 2009, BIRP is a monthly mix of new music of 100+ tracks that are free to stream online or to download. Yes, legally! Each month I look forward to their new playlist. The Texas-based website runs a blog devoted to young independent artists. BIRP is a worldwide growing community of people who love to share and to talk about music. So stop reading and go check out their free playlists and mixtapes.
TUIG is a new magazine/blog, showcasing weird and often provocative illustrations and alien graffiti from around the globe. For now, TUIG is situated on the interweb, but it will soon evolve into a real magazine. There will be an expo and release party with the DRLR Records crew. Based on their Tumblr, it won’t just be an ordinary graffiti magazine. They are still gathering material for the first issue, which will be out at the end of summer. Submissions can be sent to tuigmagazine@gmail.com.

Art: TL Collectief
Tom Van Brugghe is a 26-year-old animator. His hilarious installations are composed of a healthy number of animated short films played simultaneously on a tube TV that provides the necessary amount of noise and uproar. His shorts are not exactly devoid of obscenity, but they’re more than that, as he mixes them with silly situations and anecdotes from his daily life. We recommend that you get up whenever you see his name appear and go to the event, because he chooses not to show his work online.
TL is a young collective making inspirational art-based projects. This summer they’re collecting all they’ve got and going on tour. At their mobile office you will be able to discover their projects. Coming up: the pop-up bar and exhibition TerrasFestival and Woorddans: a (slam)poetry / dance / performance competition. These events all come with a personal graphic publication, ZIP ZINE. Facebook and their always evolving website keep you up-to-date.

NVT is the relatively new gallery of Elske Jansen and Tom Maeseele. They invite artists with different ideologies and give them the chance to present their work. By combining different artists they create a self-opinionated atmosphere where everybody can enjoy some good artwork and where the artist can have a taste of what the art world can offer them. www.nvtgalerie.be Recommended by D!NG Magazine dingmagazine.com
Misc.: Type Connection The first hundred times clicking ‘no’ was real fun, but after that, it just got kind of tiring. So we’re pretty much over Tinder now. But life is just too short to live alone, luckily there’s Type Connection. Since the chances you smashed your smartphone recently are quite high, you’ll be happy to hear a laptop will do for this typographic dating game. Pair up different fonts and find the ones that match you. When the time comes to write a virtual love letter, you’ll know what to do.
Our house photographer Kenzo De Bruyn is the only man in our team but he sure does count for ten. Kenzo is like a chameleon when it comes to photography. Whenever he accompanies us to an interview, he observes every detail and listens to what the interviewees have got to say so he can portray them in a way that captures their personality perfectly. It’s as if he uncovers them layer by layer until he finds their core. debruynkenzo.wordpress.com Recommended by Sir Magazine www.sirmagazine.be

The Ride Life Words by Camille Pollie & Bert Sap Photos shot by Nina Strebelle in Brussels, Belgium
We’re Camille Pollie and Bert Sap fromt The Ride Life. Each month we follow a Bruxellois and their bike on a tour through Brussels in which we visit their favourite spots in the city. We pick out an interesting local who loves to cycle and who loves Brussels. We ask them to take us to the spots they like to visit on the weekends or where they like to work, relax, breathe... We pour this into a two-minute video with the subject’s chosen soundtrack and their own tour and then post it on our website. You get the addresses and you get the tour; now it’s time to jump on your own bike. We grew up in and around Bruges where a bike is the way to get around for free and without having your parents pick you up. When we arrived in Brussels six years ago we found it odd that people didn’t really cycle. With traffic being horrible and public transport shutting down in the early hours, we thought cycling was the best way to get around. After a couple of nights in one of Brussels’ many bars we founded it: The Ride Life. Just living and riding through Brus-

The Ride Life is part of our lifestyle, and that makes it very easy to be passionate about it. Which isn’t to say we pull a sad face when we’re filming in the rain – which has happened quite a lot in our little grey country. But The Ride Life is not just about the cycling; it’s also about expanding the world you know and the parts of town you know. It makes us encounter new people every time we ride. And next to creating a new community around us, it gives us a lot of free working experience. We can show what we’re made of. We think you can guard your authenticity by sticking to your idea. People always ask us to join cycling activist groups, but that’s not what we’re about. The Ride Life is about enjoying the city you live in on the vehicle that takes you around town for free: a bike. By protecting our main idea we stay authentic. In our dreams there would be a The Ride Life Shanghai in five years. We would like to expand the idea to other cities around Europe and the world – cities that, like Brussels, are beautiful and easy to ride around but that people don’t initially see in that way. Our great example is Jamal Edwards. He’s a Brit who started out shooting videos for underground rappers and who now owns a YouTube channel with a million views per video. It’s cool to see how when you stick to your initial idea, it can take you a long way. Ideally we would like a collab with Stromae. He’s the voice of a new generation in Brussels: young people who realise that they can actually get somewhere if they work hard for it. We’re not sure if he would get on a bike, though... Get out your beloved ride and find out the routes via www.theridelife.be

Tina Herbots Words by Tina Herbots Photos shot by Tina Herbots
When my friends enthusiastically introduce me to people, the first thing they’ll mention is that I’m the in-house photographer at Ancienne Belgique, one of Belgium’s finest venues. If the conversation goes on I tell them that other than being AB’s photographer, I also study cinema at Sint-Lukas Brussels, take pictures of the streets I walk and capture my (ridiculously good-looking) friends on film. And when I’m feeling bored I’ll browse through old Paris Match magazines, cut them up and make collages with them. That’s that. But there’s more. Besides wanting to be a know-it-all about music, I have quite a keen interest in cinema. Directors such as Michael Haneke, Tsai Mingliang, Gus Van Sant and Abbas Kiarostami are my greatest inspirations, because they devote a lot of attention to the aesthetics of their films. Most of these filmmakers like to keep their scenes sober, as do I in my photographs. As a music enthusiast, I spend most of my time in concert halls, oftentimes taking pictures. I must admit that lately, I do prefer going to

Tina Herbots. Continued a concert without my camera. Over the years my body has learned to really feel and see music. Carrying around a two-kilogramme camera has become a bit unnecessary. I catch myself feeling guilty when I leave my house without something to capture a moment with, though. One of the things that keep me going is seeing other artists working hard on their projects. I love the feeling when I leave the museum on a sunny Sunday having seen interesting work. It encourages me to make new things and try to give other people that same feeling. The person who got me into photography, about six years ago, has to be Annie Leibovitz. A classic. She’s done things that I’d love to accomplish: working for a rock ’n’ roll magazine, taking intimate portraits of great bands on tour and being one of the most respected music photographers in the world. If I ever become Belgium’s Leibovitz, I’d go on tour with The xx and Tom Waits, and I’d also find a way to reunite The White Stripes so I could join them on tour too. Yes, I have some big dreams. That’s allowed, isn’t it? But there’s not only Leibovitz. In little Flanders there’s Anton Coene to look up to. He’s a young creative, with hair as long as Leibovitz, and a big inspiration to me. His sepia-tinted, intimate tour life photos of Belgium’s finest bands make me want to start a band of my own so he can join us on tour with his camera. That’s how good he is. Really. So here I am. My biggest incentive to keep on working this hard, I think, is being afraid that one day people will forget about my photos. I might have got this idea when I watched the great documentary Grey Gardens by Albert and David Maysles, a film about faded glory. And as I said before, I can’t leave my house without a little camera. It’s silly to say that it’s become a part of me, but I think it has. To see things and be able to share them with others is a pretty pleasant job, actually. Check out more of Tina’s work on tinaherbots.tumblr.com

Why Not Monday Words by Julie Donckers Photos shot by Jelena Kovačević in Antwerp, Belgium
Some might introduce me as a tech-geeky girl who’s trying to make your Monday less boring. I founded the online platform Why Not Monday in September 2013. One month later I moved to Berlin for a strategy internship at Scholz & Friends. Now I’m back in Belgium, 17 contributors are writing for me and I’m starting my career as a freelancer in the crazy world of advertising and communication. It’s quite hard to translate my skills into a single function. I first went to art school and then decided to study communication management.Yes, the two sides of my brain are constantly arguing. My mentor in Berlin called me a creative planner, and I think I’ll stick with that: a good mix between common sense and creative concept development. Finding inspiration can vary from project to project. In general I find a lot of my inspiration in talking to people, especially about everyday things. When I’m stuck, I start browsing magazines or check Reddit. I have noticed, though, that the best ideas come at the most random moments, mostly while walking. I love wandering around town, music

‘Feedback is what I value the most; nobody learns from applause’ in my ears, just thinking about current or possible projects. The energy I get from an enthusiastic team is priceless. That’s probably my biggest drive for Why Not Monday: keeping my contributors motivated about this project and working together with them to create appealing content. We want to inspire/entertain our readers every Monday, and that isn’t easy. This means stepping out of your comfort zone from time to time, but the results motivate me. This passion and enthusiasm make it authentic – to me, at least. Every time somebody asks me where I see myself in five years’ time, I pause to think. It’s hard to say at the moment. But I do know that I want to be part of the changes that are happening in our industry, not only advertising but also media and brands are transforming for the better. Exciting times! Those entrepreneurs who start doing what they love, even if it’s risky, inspire me the most. There are a lot of talented people in Belgium, but I’m very bad at listing my favourites. One thing’s for sure: Wim Ballieu is at the top of my ‘food creatives’ list. His passion for food is translated in all his projects. Every time I talk with him, I get inspired. That ability to inspire others is an important quality for a creative person. I can call myself a lucky girl because I am surrounded by people who inspire me, from madmen to (interior) designers. It’s great to play idea ping pong with these creative people. Feedback is what I value the most; nobody learns from applause. Go cure your Monday blues at whynotmonday.com

Hermine Van Dijck Words by Hermine Van Dijck Photos shot by Eefje De Coninck in Antwerp, Belgium
Woven surfaces and carpet designs: that’s what I specialise in as a textile designer. When I saw a weaving loom for the first time seven years ago, I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. This is a never-ending story. If I can’t weave or create for more than a week, I feel very unhappy. For me, weaving and creating textiles have the same value as eating or sleeping: without them, I can’t live. After my textile design studies at the School of Arts in Ghent, I went to Paris for six months, where I interned at Malhia Kent, a weaving company that creates the fabrics for Chanel. As interesting as it was to work there, I quickly felt that I wanted to do my own thing. I came back to Belgium and started my own textile studio, where I work on new objects, textiles, creations. I weave both by hand and with industrial machines. Weaving is a long, slow process, but in a way it’s like a trance for me. It makes me very calm. My designs are very personal, and are a mix of fresh colours, geometric patterns and soft materials. I prefer to create objects for
24
25
Hermine Van Dijck. Continued the home, like the carpets I’m working on now and my ‘blossom plaids’. That’s why it’s a dream to see my creations in people’s houses. It makes me happy if one of my designs finishes someone’s interior, and makes someone’s house into a home. I’m currently working on my own label, which is a slow process, but I hope to show my new collection in about a year. It inspires me to just look at everything that happens around me. I like to search for beauty in my daily life, like nature, a funny conversation between people, a beautiful song on the radio, a nice wrapping paper in the gift shop. Of course I also get inspired by going to an exhibition, reading nice art books and browsing on the internet. I motivate myself out of love for creating and the technique. And I create what I think is right and beautiful. I’m just very lucky that it seems to please a lot of people too. Because if you want to stay authentic, you just have to follow your gut instinct, your flow. An object should be 100 per cent you. I love everyone who weaves or make carpets, we’re one big family. And I have big love for all my creative friends, like Eefje De Coninck and Chevalier-Masson, two textile designers based in Brussels who create simple but very profound pieces with a twist. And there’s the Antwerp-based food collective Otark Productions. Charlotte Koopman and Hadas Cna’ani are the best food-makers in Belgium (if not the world), and Charlotte makes lovely illustrations for their events. And then there are Dutch designers I love, such as Hella Jongerius, for her crazy ideas. Scholten en Baijings for their great sense for colour, and Mae Engelgeer for her graphic weaving patterns. I would love to work with Sheila Hicks, she’s the grandmother of all textile artists, and a famous weaver. I just would love to have a talk with her about dreams and art. Scene Report Charleroi
Text by Rémy Venant, Jean De Lacoste and Sandrine Verstraete Photos shot by Jérôme K and Iwert Timmermans in Charleroi, Belgium
28
Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! Every month we’ll feed your hunger for secrets in the Scene Report. This time we got intriguing insights from Rémy Venant, spokesman for multidisciplinary cultural platform Le Vecteur; video artist and DJ Jean De Lacoste; and multimedia artist Sandrine Verstraete. All three young creatives who live and work in Charleroi. ‘Charleroi is a city in the middle of the process of being culturally reborn. It’d be interesting to make another scene report in five years, to see what the fruits of our labour will look like’ Charleroi and its lower town. A cursed city, victim of a bunch of twats who labelled it ‘the ugliest town on earth’. But here, no one messes around with what’s ugly and what’s not. People have their own tastes, and that’s all there is to know! I, Rémy, for one, have heard too many times, ‘Oh, you work in Charleroi… Must be really hard.’ But, quite frankly, you wouldn’t believe all the cool stuff that happens here. Let’s be honest: places like the Vecteur are not the easiest to find: you definitely don’t have one on every street. Despite – or perhaps because of – its reputation, Charleroi is still a place where you have to shake people up just to get them to think a little more outside of the box. The people who work for the Vecteur are just completely in love with the place. We love it when artists, musicians, film directors or
29
Scene Report: Charleroi. Continued any other kind of performers come over. We serve good food every Wednesday evening before putting on a genuinely independent film. One of the things we do best is getting people to move slightly outside of their comfort zone. We go and find people where they expect it the least, like in schools or youth centres. Then, we introduce them to an artist, everyone gets together, and, if everything goes as planned, it can be absolutely riveting. In this age of overwhelming amounts of information coming at us from all sides, gatherings and idea-sharing is what is most important to us here at the Vecteur. For example, our festival Livresse focuses on contemporary literature that revolves around a rich set of debates, shows and concerts. We’ve been able to welcome incredible people like the writer Dan Fante, the journalist Michka Assayas and even the anthropologist Marc Augé. Luckily, there are other people who also put every fibre of their being into helping improve Charleroi’s scene. For example, you have Dirty Monitor and their genius videographic work, Rockerill and its old industrial structures now converted into a festival site, concert venue and more. You also have the very first Biennales Des Arts Urbains, Asphaltes, taking place in the town centre. There is also Incise Gallery, a contemporary art gallery run by Benoît Dusart and Marie-Noëlle Dailly. It’s in fact a window display where they invite different artists from different fields to make an installation. Besides those, there are myriad small initiatives being born, often still in a prenatal phase, but coming together ever so slightly and stubbornly. Hopefully, those can find their place to grow and to continue, maybe following the example set by the guys of Rafales, who organise a music festival every last Saturday of June on top of a spoil tip. Already at their eighth edition this year, this summer they

At one point or another we, musicians, organisers, curators, artists, will find each other in La Quille, which offers a great selection of beers, the paper to read and on occasion a soccer match to follow on the television screen. Or you can check Mnóad, four guys who are passionate about jazz and experimental music. Their association is well known for its bars where they serve regional beer. Last month, they even brewed their own beer and called it… the Vecteur! And last but not least, you have the most amazing bands, like the orgasmic math-rock of Castles, who’ve now signed a deal with Palm Reader Record, and the Italiandisco Saco & Van Zeti and their Essential Charleroi Spots: Vecteur, amazing performances, Spaguetta Rockerill, Eden, Bar des Anges, Orghasmmond. 34 Bar, BPS22, Discosaurus, Galerie Incise

Sam Vanallemeersch He says he’s into ‘junk’, and we can tell by his paintings – in a good way. Sam Vanallemeersch (1978) studied illustration and graphic design. His work is reminiscent of Quentin Blake, Gauguin and studio 4°C animation: very grimy, very dark but also full of fantasy. His watercolour compositions awaken the infantile mind, but the angry, detailed faces and bodies combined with mouth-filling phrases also give a vigorous, almost political feel to his work. These striking contrasts might have something to do with his schizophrenic inspirations: Seventies sci-fi, underground parking lots, French and Japanese comics, the supermarket... all happening simultaneously www.sovchoz.be www.kolchoz.com 34

Fug You by Ed Sanders Ed Sanders is many things: poet, writer, self-satirising musician, peace activist, environmentalist, Greek and Egyptian scholar, bookstore owner, magazine editor, quick convict and the missing link between the Beats and the Hippies. One of the main founders of seminal rock band The Fugs, Sanders spent the better part of his youth in the Sixties hanging out with figures such as William Burroughs, Andy Warhol and Allen Ginsberg, protesting war and social injustice, and planting the seed of counterculture through his music and writings. With the creation of the taboobusting, Egyptian glyph-wielding Fuck You/A Magazine of the Arts, he expounded free love, psychedelia and freeform expression in a move that largely preceded the betterknown legacy of San Francisco in the zenith of the Haight Ashbury days. All of these personas found a sanctuary in the Peace Eye Bookstore, which became the congre-
gational refuge of the radicals and artists of the burgeoning Manhattan counterculture. In his book Fug You: An Informal History of the Peace Eye Bookstore, the Fug You Press, The Fugs and Counterculture in the Lower East Side, Sanders captures the frenetic euphoria of the time in an ebullient narrative that zigzags from personal experience to reminiscences on the larger socio-political narrative that shaped and shifted the actions of the youth at large. Weaving the archival with the anecdotal, one gets the sense that though creative warfare was pivotal in his vision, Sanders never takes himself too seriously, making this tripped-out memoir all the more enjoyable. May the total assault on culture never grow old!

The landscape of Deux jours, une nuit – Seraing and the River Meuse – can be seen as the Dardennes’ state of mind. Like all great artists their desire is the portrayal of the individual, the other. The film is first and foremost a truly cinematographic effort; the painting of the soul of things in an attempt to represent history in the present. Deux jours, une nuit tells the story of a woman who tries to convince her colleagues to drop a €1,000 bonus in order to save her job. You could call it social cinema, but only in the best possible way; simply because they raise questions about the issue instead of trying to solve it. Would we blush for the religiously realistic art of the cinema if we were not being eaten away by a desire to change the world? Screenings start on 21 May at Sphinx cinema in Ghent and many other venues.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
The Brig
The Brig Jonas Mekas & Adolfas Mekas - 1964
Tony Richardson - 1962
A brig is a jail for insubordinate US marines. After Kenneth H Brown spent 30 days in one he wrote a play about his stay. First performed in New York by The Living Theatre in 1963, Jonas Mekas made a film of the vehemently anti-authoritarian production a year later. Through relentless long takes, the spectator sees how the ‘maggots’ are submitted to disciplinary terror reminiscent of the psychological warfare conducted today on imprisoned enemies of the US. Screening at Cinema Zuid, Antwerp, on 18 June (20.00).
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner follows the ordeals of a ‘rebellious youth’ in a boy’s reformatory. He gains a privileged status as a prize-winning runner but starts to re-evaluate his status, as he grows conscious of his position in society. Richardson’s brand of ‘Free Cinema’ sought out new cinematic forms, attacking class oppression in 1960s Britain. ‘No film can be too personal. The image speaks. Sound amplifies and comments. Size is irrelevant. Perfection is not an aim.’ Screening at Cinematek, Brussels, on 16 June (19.00).

ect, and they are going to perform their latest album Get Back, featuring an endless list of artists. Pink Mountaintops explore and define rock’n’roll with a more psychedelic and experimental side, music that is a fusion of motorcycle rides, oddly timeless guitar riffs and dirty dirt. Its rapid tempo will make your blood run faster.
Hailing from Tampa, Florida, Merchandise tells the lovely story about becoming who you are. This dreamy indie-rock band has a turbulent past, undergoing ceaseless revision and reinvention. After putting out numerous records and tapes on independent punk labels, they really hit it off with The Children of Desire LP, which came with an extra piece of literature. The songs on 2013 album Total Nite envelope and overtake you more with every extra spin on the record player.

Canadian film prodigy Xavier Dolan gave us strong first impressions with J’ai tué ma mère, Les amours imaginaires and Laurence Anyways. So no, he’s not just a one-season sensation. His new psychological piece, Tom à la ferme, is definitely darker, focusing on the young Tom, crossing the countryside on his way to the funeral of his loved one, where he gets into a dusky, gloomy fuss, as no one seems to know who he is.

After Scottie Yoder received a 4-track for his birthday, he began turning out poppy and energetic numbers in a shed on Vashon Island. He founded a band with Brendhan Bowers and Stefan Rubicz while they were high-school friends, creating precisely the kind of music you always wanted to create with your best mate in your garage, but never did. The Pharmacy could be called indie rock or a messy mix of Nirvana-influenced garage punk as well.
