The Greenery Issue

Give us for four walls and we’ll fill ’em with music. But as soon as we can, we’ll throw in some plants, too. Because what’s better company than a palm with gently waving fronds, a Swiss cheese plant that’s curling its way up the wall or a calathea that’s softly folding up its leaves as the night is falling over the city streets? But if you seem to be missing those green fingers, then just head out to go see one of our spring shows. That’s where we provide you with the right company. Our gift to you: a bouquet of fun nights out.

March Recommendations Each month our staff provides you with a selection of the finer things in life. Enjoy!

Art: Look at the Door

Music: LOTIC

Belgium hides many secrets. If you look at its doors, you’ll certainly notice one of the best-kept: the door handles. Nothing really exciting on first glance, but if you look closer, a whole world opens up to you. Each piece seems unique and like it comes from another era – probably from mid-century modernism, or something like that. Be part of the game: look for them and index ’em. Like Pokémons. Or just take a look at this Tumblr library.

With the release of Heterocetera, your month couldn’t begin in any more spectacular fashion. As the sound of the title single suggests, Tri Angle Recordssignee Lotic will bring to life a hellish world with his debut EP, in which your limbs will be excruciatingly tempted to start swivelling in ways you never believed possible. The Berlin-based Texan J’Kerian Morgan states his tracks sound a little bit like a battle, fought time and time again. With bumping, grinding beats and stuttering rhythms, it’s the sound of a ouija-board evening gone bad, dancing on a high with ecstatic demons.

March Recommendations Art: Yves Obyn

Art: Entr’acte Entr’acte was founded in London in 1999, where it continued to operate until 2012, when it relocated to Antwerp. Its primary concern is the physical publication of music and work in other mediums (such as books and film/video). The material chosen for publication is selected from demos and other unsolicited submissions. There is no set agenda for the type of content it seeks to publish. And we kind of like that. entracte.co.uk

Music: Pale Blue

The works of Yves Obyn are monumental interpretations of historical events, cinematic and narrative stagings with a contextual twist, looking for ways to deceive the viewer, balancing on the line between fiction and reality. The projects often result in conceptual design objects capitalising on popular culture. The pieces that sprout from Obyn’s installations get a function and are reproduced in limited editions. They assume a strong aesthetic language where function is subordinate to form. The objects can be interpreted as props from a movie that is yet to be made, and are referred to by the artist as ‘three-dimensional clipart’.

NYC producer Mike Simonetti parted ways with his Italians label Do It Better, to focus on his new babies. With

Two Mikes Records he’ll be releasing the music he believes in together with Captured Tracks. Set for April, the first release will be The Past We Leave Behind, the debut LP from Pale Blue, Simonetti’s other new project. Ranging from melodic techno to experimental dream pop, it’ll be lush melodic warmth, topped of with Elizabeth Wight’s vocals. The debut single washes over you as a mix of euphoric triumph and melancholy. www.facebook.com/PaleBlueOfficial

Music: Leno Lovecraft What sounds as if there are fluorescent tulips popping out of your ears? That’s right, Leno Lovecraft! On Platinum Planet, the Kiwi producer creates a whimsical kaleidoscope of out-of-control melodies and over-the-top kawaii J-pop vocals. With songs called ‘Paradise Planet’, ‘Starlight’, ‘High Definition Emotion’ and ‘Holographic Waterfalls’, Lovecraft brings to life a pink sugarcoated world, filled to the brim with positive energy and funky, rainbow-coloured creatures bouncing up and down with a childlike happiness.

Harriet Lee Merrion is a young freelance illustrator based in Bristol, UK. Detailed and yet very simple, her works hold a kind of peculiar narrative that awakens the imagination. Themes like femininity, identity, biology and philosophy are often recognisable. Her drawings feature clear references to Ukiyo-e, the Japanese woodblock prints and paintings that flourished in Japan between the 17th and 19th centuries. The beige and pastel tones bring a fragility that really speaks, making it very easy to get lost in the mysterious and organic stories that she portrays.

praying for the rain. What struck us the most during our talk was the throwaway comment ‘follow your bliss’. It perfectly sums up her outlook on life, and it is something we should all strive for 14

The Greenery Issue. Interview Are you into plants? Yeah – although I’m not quite as knowledgeable about them as I could be, or would like to be. Here in LA there’s lots of different kinds of trees and flowers that I’m not used to seeing, having grown up in Northern California. I was reading a lot of Joan Didion books when I first moved here because most of them talk about LA, and her time living here. Her descriptions are obviously really insightful and beautiful. She talks a lot about the various kinds of greenery. It was cool to read about them and then look them up and recognise them around the city. How long have you been living in LA? About a year and a half. I actually lived in a different place for the first year and then last September I moved to Chinatown. It hasn’t been that long that I’ve lived here but I’m so much happier. The other place just had weird vibes, you know? It didn’t feel right. I just never settled in completely. I mean, a place can be a dump or ramshackle or whatever, as long as it has its heart in the right place. And the first one just didn’t. Do you have plants around the house? I do, but none of them are mine. It’s not that I don’t have an interest in them, it’s just that I’ve been a lot more dispersed over the last couple of years. Knowing that you’re gonna be going on tour prevents you from doing anything where you have to commit fully. You could just get a cactus. [Laughs] Well, there’s actually lots of cactuses in the wild in LA. Oh man, that’s so cool. I’ve never seen them growing in the wild. Oh yeah, I guess you don’t exactly live in the desert. It’s funny how elementary those realisations can be. ’Cause I haven’t been to Europe many times so I can’t quite imagine what it’s like there. Just recently I was in Australia and one day all these gigantic fruit bats flew by and I’d never seen that before, it was so creepy. I actually do kinda

The Greenery Issue. Interview ‘I think I’m really sensitive to the earth. I like to be around beauty’ miss greenery myself a bit, because it’s the desert here and it’s far less dense and moist than the north where I’m from. If you’re actually in the desert then its grandeur makes sense with the feeling of the air and the heat. But in an urban sprawl, it feels like the wasteland sometimes. Did you appreciate your surroundings when you were growing up? I did, I always felt that my hometown was very beautiful. It’s a very scenic place and it definitely affects your temperament so much. Moving here I maybe even got a bit depressed because I missed that. Greenery can be soothing, just like bodies of water. There are a lot of lakes around there, too. I think I’m really sensitive to the earth. I like to be around beauty. It sometimes makes me wonder how long I can live here. It’s a really redeeming city in a lot of ways. I mean, there’s a lot happening that’s really exciting so it’s kind of just an aesthetic/ environmental compromise for now. Do you have a spirit flower? I haven’t even decided on a spirit animal, let alone a flower! I know it’s very predictable but I love roses because growing up, we had these rose bushes outside that were in between my neighbours’ yard and ours so they didn’t belong to either of us. We both took care of them and that was nice. I especially like the way wild roses look, ’cause they’re just sloppy. So I guess I’d say wild roses as my spirit flower. I do also like gardenias a lot… I guess I just haven’t considered what truly represents me. Jessica Pratt plays Botanique, Brussels on 26 March. The show is free for Subbacultcha members.

SamuelSpaniel by Nina Strebelle

Apparently, going for a walk in the park isn’t always that relaxing. Luca Derom and our photographer got kicked out by policemen with assault rifles, who thought they were planning an attack. If they were conspiring at all, it was for a chill tropical palmtree paradise party, set in an aquarium flooded by colourful neon light, exotic fishes whirling in the aquatic walls around you. It’s the vibe of SamuelSpaniel’s warm and hazy beats, of his welcoming experimental sound 21

Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! Every month we’ll feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report. Guessing you’re also in need of some well-deserved rays of sun, we roam the streets of Barcelona with Alex and Alex. Forget about the mosaicadorned houses of Gaudí, because this lovely duo assures us that the hot Spanish nights are way more colourful After finishing an excruciating eight-hour shift at your job – you’re lucky if you have one in Spain – you decide to go out on a Friday night, because what else are you supposed to do? Barcelona is regularly labelled the cultural capital of Spain, but to be honest, compared to metropolises like London or Berlin, it’s more of a big village. Consequently, everybody who likes music and partying tends to end up knowing each other after a single night out. While you drink your afternoon away with cheap beer peddled by kind Pakistani street sellers and probably eat a kebab at a dodgy bar, you’ll cross paths with seven or eight friends also wandering the city. Before you know it, you’re with a group of people eager to go out and do something that evening. Apolo is a club/concert venue with the monopoly on gigs and electronic sessions due to its link with the famous Primavera Sound Festival. If you attend Primavera, you get access to that club all year round. Basically, it’s free and offers quite an eclectic music selection almost every weekend. The festival-club combo has proven to be a

The Greenery Issue ‘It’s not all big venues; we still have those bars where small bands play in tiny rooms and where the sweat drips off the ceiling’ success for local bands from the beginning, but the pitfall is that these same bands tend to expect too much when touring internationally, expecting others to do the work they should be doing themselves. On the other hand, it’s not all big venues; we still have those bars where small bands play in tiny rooms and where the sweat drips off the ceiling. These taverns – located mainly in the narrow piss-stained streets of the Raval and Gracia districts – are always on the brink of extinction, as neighbours complain about youngsters drinking and shouting in the streets. Before that and the economic recession, all we had were lousy synth-pop bands. So when people with a degree couldn’t find a decent job, they craved frantic gigs during the weekend to forget their problems for a minute by either playing in or watching bands. Rockers like Mujeres helped to increase the popularity of live music by making shows both fun and real again. People would mosh and stage dive drunkenly without a care in the world. Soon other bands followed. Most of them weren’t even from the city, but eventually they moved here from places like Vic, about an hour away from Barcelona. Four years ago there was a big musical explosion that can be traced back to Festival Hoteler, an event put on by a group of friends who were bored by the lack of music in their hometown. Their initiative nourished the city’s musical scene with its DIY philosophy, forming a varied scene made up of groups that ran the gamut from punk and shoegaze-y pop to new wave. Some of these bands have even

Food of the Gods A Radical History of Plants, Drugs and Human Evolution by Terence McKenna I remember picking up my copy of Food of the Gods and catching glimpses of terms such as ‘chemical binoculars’ and ‘golden vedic enigma’ and ‘alchemy of the spirit’, instantly foreseeing a couple of months’ worth of waddling down a fibrous web of parboiled adjectives and guttural pseudoscience. Which, quite honestly, is very much my jam. But Terence McKenna’s account of his incursions into consciousness-expanding plants and substances stretches far beyond stoner verbiage. This dude covers everything: evolution, religion, biochemistry, TV, societal structures, gastronomy, metaphysics… and, of course, psychedelics. McKenna posits a theory that, regardless of your academic snobbery, is nothing short of intriguing: that mind-altering plants and mushrooms had a hand in the development of human consciousness, and that our cognisant advantage over

other creatures comes down to our incredibly resourceful ancestor: the stoned chimp. McKenna takes us to remote villages all over the globe, incessantly highlighting the harmonious bond that mankind had, until relatively recently, sustained with plants and food, and the effects of these on human relationships to nature and to one another. It’s a pretty dense work, bouncing from studies of ancient societies to excruciating studies of plant molecules to the hazards of culture, calling for the return of a free-loving, drug-taking, female-led civilisation free of the inner and outer wars of our times. In all truthfulness, this ain’t an easy read: the reasoning can be abstract, the ideas far-fetched and the themes somewhat illusory. But the magic of McKenna’s writing is that it’s all of the above and much more. In short, a trip well worth ingesting.

Sergei Loznitsa Retrospective

‘It is a popular movement, and what I wanted to show, the subject of my film, is the people. If I start singling out individual characters – just two, three, four, five characters – it would not be the story of the people any more. It would just be individual characters, and then we enter into the territory of personal dimensions, which wasn’t interesting for this film. That is why I chose a style that enabled me to have many characters, groups, masses of people in the frame at the same time – to observe their actions and movements.’ Loznitsa’s latest film, Maidan, about the Kiev uprising that ended up toppling Yanukovich’s government in February 2014, provided more insight into the events than a year’s worth of journalism. Loznitsa’s rigorous formal approach to this bloody revolution prompted Cinematek to take a closer look at this important contemporary filmmaker. His oeuvre consists of numerous documentaries as well as fiction works. Both shorts and feature-length films will be screened throughout March at Cinematek, Brussels.

Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder, 1950)

Nathaniel Dorsky’s sensual and luminous 16mm films stem from a profound but modest desire to find a cinematic poetica that entrusts our everyday lives with their proper rhythm and flow. Much like his fellow independent filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage and Gregory Markopolous, Dorsky’s often silent films are meditations on light, the passing of time, the frisson between spirit and matter, nature and landscape. Screening at Art Cinema OFFoff, Ghent on 09 March at 20.00.

‘Billy, you bastard, you have disgraced the industry that made you and fed you!’ These are the words of Louis B Mayer, the single most powerful force in Hollywood, after a test-screening of Sunset Boulevard in 1959. Billy Wilder, then the single most powerful film director in Hollywood, had just finished the most famous Hollywood film about Hollywood. Wilder, known to be an artful dodger, vividly replied: ‘Fuck you.’ Screening at Buda, Kortrijk on 10 March.

After his Lil Gem EP, his Ascensión mixtape ranges from hot reggaeton tunes to poppy sweetness and true dancehall vibes, in Spanish, English and even Chinese. After giving it our all during his performance at Wastelands this summer, we’re more than ready for Part II. As SamuelSpaniel, Brusselsbased Luca Derom will also provide luscious tunes.

A two-part exhibition based on video works from the Argos collection. The title nods to Jean-Luc Godard’s film Le Gai Savoir (1968), in which two characters ponder the meanings of sound, words and images. On show: works that encourage viewers to regard cinema as both a technique and an introspective experience.

LA-based neo-psychedelic rock quartet Froth has quickly evolved from a joke among musically unexperienced friends to a substantial chaos-minded project. Articulating their music around dreamy guitar riffs, tempo-changing rhythms and frontman JooJoo Ashworth’s soothingly nonchalant voice, Froth shows a fascinating determination to never overthink their music or take themselves too seriously. With their first LP, Patterns, out on Lolipop Records, they successfully attest that simplicity can equal efficiency. Support comes from French self-described post-garagepunk-psych-country band Regal.

Dubbed ‘Belgium’s hottest psychedelic rock band’ by the local press, Bed Rugs are on a roll. With Cycle, the 8th Cloud follow-up LP that dropped in January, they’re taking the next step. The raw nostalgic anger in the single ‘Specks’ will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, evoking memories of The Flaming Lips, Girls in Hawaii or even The Beatles. Be warned: tunes like ‘Clear Obscure’ and ‘Piles’ might be stuck in your head for a pretty long while.

BANG!: Carte Blanche Dennis Tyfus

There’s more to Norwegian music than black metal and A-ha these days, and the rest of the world is finally starting to notice it. The 28-year-old singer-songwriter Susanne Sundfør has been one of the leading artists in the Norwegian pop scene since the release of her selftitled debut album in 2007. It’s not hard to imagine why. She’s capable of some impressive vocal gymnastics; interesting arrangements and melodies complete the picture. She never fails to reinvent herself: her new album, Ten Love Songs, is an adventurous ride.

07 March - W-O-L-K-E, Brussels 20.30 | €5 | Free for members While the new KultuurKaffee takes shape, activities continue at locations elsewhere in the city, with the travelling art festival BANG!, curated by drummer Teun Verbruggen. He gives carte blanche to multidisciplinary artist Dennis Tyfus (Ultra Eczema), who is inviting a merry bunch of Nordic artists: Icelandic eccentric Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson teams up with Swedish Benny Nilsen to present their Avant Garde Gasse LP, and Tyfus himself pitches in as Bazuinschal with the help of Danish artist Mette Rasmussen. 20 March: Purling Hiss 19 March:: Tokyo Tribe

Khavn brings together a hitman and a prostitute to create an atmospheric, high -energy film, with mesmerising images and a pulsating soundtrack. With Tokyo Tribe, Japanese enfant terrible Sion Sono has made an insistently over-thetop tribute to street-wise counterculture: think martial arts moves, blood geysers and characters rapping their lines as hip-hop-loving gangsters on speed.

such as Yeasayer, Cloud Nothings and SUUNS. They released their Patine LP last fall to plenty of enthusiasm. Expanding the borders of pop music, the quartet of multi-instrumentalists weaves together tunes that are mystical, moody and catchy, forging their way in into your inner sanctum. As Le Colisée, David Nzeyimana just released his second EP called Vie Eternelle, a gem combining soft synths, acoustic guitar and warm vocals.

five releases he decided it was time for some company. As a power trio comprising Polizze, bassist and drummer, Purling Hiss went for a more compact sound on their Water on Mars LP, helped by fellow Philly native Adam Granduciel from The War on Drugs. With their latest release, Weirdon, this evolution continues, with guitar riffs generating sunny melodies and weirdo pop numbers, rife with ramshackle and catchy, fuzzy psych-punk.

Game + Ictus + Spectra + Trio Mediaeval 24 March – De Bijloke, Ghent 20.00 | €22 | Free for members For American composers Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon and David Lang, teaming up has been the key to mesmerisingly enthralling projects. Over the past 27 years they’ve been redefining contemporary classical music with their multifaceted NYC-based organisation Bang on Can, building a world in which powerful new musical ideas flow freely across all genres and borders. After their collaborations The Carbon Copy Building and Lost Objects, they created Shelter together with film director Bill Morrison. Inspired by the aesthetic beauty of blueprints, the rituals of coming home and the destructive forces of nature that can put everything at stake, it’s a grand multimedia oratorio, specially written for the sopranos of Trio Mediaeval, featuring a large mixed ensemble.

23 March - OFFoff, Ghent 20.30 | €7 | Free for members After screening Kenneth Anger’s movie Invocation of My Demon Brother in January, OFFoff presents a programme centred around the influence of Anger on contemporary filmmakers. Put together by Port Actif, the programme is based around three recurring themes in Anger’s work: homosexuality, surrealism and occultism. By projecting recent video art Port Actif wants to reveal how contemporary Belgian video artists are consciously or unconsciously influenced by Anger’s esthetic. The selected video artists include Wannes Missotten, Emelie Martens, Jonathan Paepens, Gerben Gysels, Robbert&Frank/ Frank&Robbert.

across as an angelic nymph, a tender and gentle soul, occasionally singing about praying for the rain. Boy, we’re still grateful to White Fence’s Tim Presley for releasing her first self-titled LP, which kept us company during so many nights. Once you’ve heard the beautiful, homespun lo-fi folk songs with their layered harmonies, it’s impossible to imagine a world without them. Yep, it’s in this sensitive cocoon of warm chords and poetical lyrics that we want to live.

30 March - OFFoff, Ghent 20.30 | €7 | Free for members

Body Talk draws attention to filmmakers whose work focuses on the human body. Art Cinema OFFoff will screen films by Stephen Dwoskin and Warren Sonbert. In Dwoskin’s works the performer seduces the camera and viewer. Sonbert’s Amphetamine, meanwhile, incorporates the human body in a different way. The film offers a view into the sexual and narcotic experiments of a group of friends. When the movie was shot, Sonberg was just 18 years old.

Theatre: Operit

28 March - Kaaitheater, Brussels 21.00 | €16 | Free for members

Festival: Eye on Palestine

Bulgarian Ivo Dimchev is quite the enfant terrible. As Lili Händel, a pale, nearly naked and almost translucent creature in between man and drag queen, he has fascinated us a few times before with his intoxicating voice and presence. As is traditional, Dimchev concludes the Performatik Festival, examining the physical strength of music and the melodies of his muscles, developing his own version of the concept of opera. It’s an unpredictable whirlwind of vocal improvisation based on classical music, with several vocalists and performers. After Operit, you’re invited to the dance floor, for the Performatik closing party.

30 March-04 April - KVS, Brussels Various times | €9 | Free for members The fifth edition of Eye on Palestine not only focuses on the Israel-Palestine conflict, but also introduces artists and image-makers from Palestine and other countries who are well aware of different possible approaches. Count on different intriguing documentaries, such as The Wanted 18, which tells the story of a group of activists, intellectuals and students during the first Intifada, and Concerning violence, a quest for the mechanisms of decolonisation.

The SF sweethearts of Part Time make for a night drenched in gentle nostalgia, filled with lo-fi songs about adolescent love, night drives and super-8 movies. Think late nights you never want to end, filled with hazy tunes, a perfect house party and your best friends dancing on your kitchen table till morning. American drone/noise veteran and graphic artist John Wiese has built quite a reputation among like-minded artists and enthusiasts all over the world – not only through his work with Bastard Noise, Evan Parker, Sun O))) and many other bands and projects, but also as a solo artist and live performer. Though his music could be labelled harsh, it’s always meticulous and very aesthetic, a remnant of his graphic
