The Sound Of The Belgian Underground

It strikes once more: the iteration of a time and place that is sonically unfurling. This year, it sounds like pulsating melodies from decades of yore; like hoarse shrieking over trailing feedback; like a surrealist’s slow-burn meltdown; like the paused outbursts of arachnid-loving trap; like waves in dreams in televised fantasies. Yet places aren’t really physical, even if they imply Antwerp or Liège, Brussels, Ghent, Leuven or the alchemical transfiguration of Vienna and Caracas into a state of their own. For the next two months, and for the entire foreseeable future, borders are irrelevant: it’s all happening here, and it’s all happening now. 03

ing me with his best trap/rap tracks. What’s the first record you bought? Spice Girls – Spice. Yeah, I know… I loved it when I was 12. Your first ever music-related memory? Jean-Michel Jarre played in my yellow walkman in the school bus on the way to the swimming pool. Any Belgian band we should know about? Robbing Millions – but you know them pretty well, I’m sure. Marine Dricot makes awesome videos, including music ones. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Crashing on someone else’s couch. Sundays are for friends. What makes you dance? Kendrick Lamar. Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? I heard that the festival you organised in Ghent this summer was great, both for the venue and the bands, so I’m really looking forward to the next one.

Tell us, what do you do in life? I’ve been developing crowdfunding platform KissKissBankBank in the Benelux for more than two years now. As a side job, I’m the manager of L’Heure d’été for Cinema Galeries. It’s an outdoor and indoor summer movie festival, each year focusing on a different city. Last year, we brought movies which either talked about or took place in Montréal. What projects are you working on? I’m actually just wrapping up a travelling KissKissBankBank event, taking place at Les Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels and then at Le Carreau du Temple in Paris. The idea of this event is to go beyond the crowdfunding platform and go physical. These innovations have an additional communication outlet and can get support from the audience visiting these fairs. What do you like best about your place? KissKiss Benelux is based in Brussels in Galeries Saint Hubert, one of the most beautiful spots in the city! Interview

Youff When Manu and Alex met, they quickly realised they had one thing in common: they needed to canalise abrasive thoughts and frustrations. The result, Youff, is a fast-paced, chaotic noise project composed of drums and bass. Championing productivity, the duo released their first EP a couple of months ago, and they’re already working on the next one, a few single releases and a video – in spite of being just three years old. We chatted with them about DIY recordings and the Belgian underground scene.

Youff I read that you embrace DIY ethics, especially in your album-making process. How was BAIT recorded? We do embrace DIY, but we don’t see it as the one and only way. It gives the artist total control but on the other hand you’re easily confronted with your own limitations. When we parted ways with our guitarist, we had to find a way to fill the lack of guitar in our sound, so our live sound evolved pretty quickly. But to get that sound on record by ourselves, without experience, is a whole different story. BAIT was recorded very minimalistically in our rehearsal space with just a few mics and a laptop – nothing fancy. Now we’re recording another DIY record, and this time we’re better prepared, more experienced and Live Fast Die Young, our Ghent-based booking agency, is helping us out with better recording equipment. We’re aiming for a bit more consistency in our sound this time. Do you think experimental noise music and DIY work well together? Yes, definitely. With today’s technology it’s become easier and more affordable to take the DIY route. Things like Bandcamp and Soundcloud make it easy to release stuff and to reach the right audience. For example, BAIT got noticed in Russia just a week after its release. We’re not that attached to a clear studio sound. If the content is strong enough, it’s possible to release it as a lo-fi recording. But we don’t want to only release lo-fi stuff. In the future, we would like to do some studio recordings. For our band it’s important not to restrict ourselves to one method of recording. If the sound translates the content in a good and powerful way, it’s good to go. Regardless of the sound, a consistent quality throughout a record gives the listener the oppor-

Interview Youff

'If the content is strong enough, it’s possible to release it as a lo-fi recording' tunity to look beyond the quality and to discover its content. For example, Sonic Youth’s Confusion is Sex and Swan’s Filth still blow us away. Is BAIT about pain and harassment – as songs ‘Fever Grip’, ‘Periods’, ‘Avoid’ and ‘Prozac’ suggest? Almost all of our songs and lyrics evolved out of rehearsal recordings where we didn’t really think things over and just went with it. There were songs that did not pass the mixing phase that had a whole different vibe. So no, it’s not some sort of conceptual album. What is the sound of the Belgian underground according to you? Any bands you’re excited to see at SOBU? The noise-rock, -pop, -metal, -sludge, -whatever genre is getting a lot of attention lately and is being named some kind of scene. But I think you can’t really generalise all these new noisy bands to some kind of sound. Having said that, there’s definitely a shared state of mind going on. Off the top of my head, that includes 30,000 Monkies, Maze, Cocaine Piss, Shetahr, Crowd Of Chairs, Rumours, Onmens, Novgrod… At SOBU, it’ll be interesting to see trashy, noisy bands and experimental ambient synth sets sharing a stage. It’s always fun to watch Cocaine Piss tearing it up. We missed the last Shetahr show in Ghent, so we’re looking forward to seeing them play a Youff plays the Sound of the Belgian Underground on 31 January, at AB. Wulfy Benzo With only 18 years on this Earth, Brusselsbased rapper Waldo P., aka Wulfy Benzo, is the ultimate nowhere kid. With his flawless American accent, vast swaths of encyclopaedic knowledge and an acute – almost frightening – sense of awareness, he’s a truly difficult one to pin down. We sat down for some beef sandwiches to talk about the Florida crazies, fictional transgender meth heads, trap fantasies and the possibilities of California dreaming becoming a life story.

Interview by Gabriela Gonzalez Photos shot by Jente Maes in Brussels, Belgium

Interview So what led you to make music as Wulfy Benzo? I was experimenting with music for a while but I never really found exactly what I wanted to do. Then I saw all these rappers and I thought it would be an interesting medium to work with. At the time it was sort of what everyone else was doing, and I guess it still is, but I wanted to do something really different with it. So I basically started taking out the most astonishing, vivid aspects of it and mixing it with really swampy, aggressive and ominous beats that I was making. Who do you consider your main influences when it comes to the music you make? I think I’m more influenced by films and visual arts and literature, which is a really pretentious thing to say, but oh well! My new work is very much influenced by Bataille’s writings and Serre’s The Parasite. It’s more influenced by chunks of it – I have ADHD so I always forget that I’m reading a book, and then I start reading some random page and read ten to 50 pages, get really inspired and forget about it for another month. Since we gotta stay true to the theme, who are your favourite Belgian underground figures? I love Chantal Akerman, who just passed away. I also love the director of photography Benoît Debie, who’s done some pretty big films like Spring Breakers and Enter The Void. Oh, and for sure – although he’s from Brooklyn, I gotta definitely mention this – I’m a big fan of minimalist composer and artist Charlemagne Palestine. I’ve never been able to meet him, but I’d love to. Do you feel that your lyrics are based on someone else’s reality rather than being reflective of your own experiences? They’re reflective of my interests, but for me it’s not interesting

23

Interview

'The reality of certain rappers is exposed to us everywhere. It's like a trap love story' to tell people about my life. I’m more influenced by the things I see than by the things I go through. The reality of certain rappers is exposed to us everywhere – in music videos, in their lyrics – and it’s being romanticised. It’s like a trap love story. But my music is very personal, on a deeper level. I think I remember hearing something about you writing a novel... Oh yeah, that turned into a script! It’s a sort of a Léon-like love story about a guy in Florida who produces meth energy drinks; his biggest client is his transgender lover. But then he gets a new client, this 17-year-old girl, and they become partners in crime – a drug-fuelled badass couple. But I’m working on a bunch more writing ideas which are really based in the American South – it’s a really unique place and the people are so insane. It’s the only place where you would actually have people doing this kind of crazy stuff. Will your focus be more on writing in the future? I guess so; I produce all my own stuff which is a lot of work. I think my newest release will be the last Wulfy project for a long time. Making music takes a lot of strength and inspiration away from me and sometimes I feel like it’s not worth it. I would love to move to LA or something and make this film a reality. But everything I do is connected – it sounds corny, but it all has big pieces of me in it, whether I write or make films or play music, it’s my vision. I’m not putting music first, or writing Wulfy Benzo plays the Sound of the Belfirst, or anything; it’s all on the gian Underground on 31 January, at AB. same level of Wulfy [Laughs]. Scene Report Kortrijk

Words by Mich Decruyenaere Photos shot in Kortrijk, Belgium by Franรงois Berland, Tom Roelofs and Paul Lamont

28

Scene Report — Kortrijk Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! So we feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report. Mich, our De Kreun buddy, knows Kortrijk like the back of his hand. ‘That’s easy, the town is tiny,’ you might say. Well beware, dear reader: the music scene in this petite village competes with those of the largest Belgian cities. As far as I can remember, I’ve always had a bit of a love/hate relationship with this city. For a long time, it was considered a conservative town, where there isn’t much going on if you’re into music. I grew up in Aalbeke, a small town close to Kortrijk. My friends and I had a youth club called ’t Skut. Very rapidly, this place became my home base and that’s where it all started. It was the place where we hung out, where I booked my first shows, where we played our first shows and where we organised parties. That was the Nineties. At that time, you had ’t Skut in Aalbeke, La Gare in Lauwe and The Pit’s in Kortrijk. We used to call it the golden triangle. Hanging out in these places was such an integral part of my life. It made me the music-loving person that I am today. The Pit’s – where I saw bands like New Bomb Turks, Crowbar, Eyehategod, The Mummies, Antiseen, No Means No, Acme and also a lot of local hardcore bands that would later conquer the world like Nations on Fire, Shortsight, Spirit of Youth and Blindfold – was especially formative. This hard-

29

Scene Report — Kortrijk core scene was also known as 8000 or later H8000 bands and the H8000 scene, which has its roots in Kortrijk. It was also at that time that I started playing in bands. Hitch was my first serious band, which I played in for 15 years. Our influences were Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, Jawbox and labels such as Dischord, Touch & go and Amphetamine Reptile. We recorded and released a bunch of albums, and toured Europe and the States several times. Around the same time, Vlas Vegas was launched, a label run by a circle of friends based at a small bar called ’t Geniep on the Vlasmarkt in Kortrijk. Bands on the label were all pretty much all Kortrijk based (Hitch, Galatasaray, Ansatz Der Maschine, Hawai, Vandal X, Guernica, Nomad and Zucchini Drive, and later on bands like SIC, Maze and Rape Blossoms). We used to have shows at ’t Geniep and a few years later we organised Sinxen Vlas Vegas, a three-day free festival which had some really legendary editions... Hitch played its last show in 2009. At the time Hitch was ‘disassembled’, Kortrijk was really flourishing musically: the hardcore scene was watered-down but new bands were popping up all over the place. There wasn’t so much of a K-Town scene anymore as everybody seemed to be doing their own thing. Today, some of them have gotten pretty big, like Goose, SX and Balthazar. Nowadays we still hang out at The Pit’s, but other venues have become equally as important. The biggest music venue is De Kreun. There’s a real community there which involves a lot of musicians, from the guys of Goose or SX to some of the guys from Vvovnds, Amenra, Hessian and Wiegedood. I’ve been working there for about eight years now, and I’m quite proud of what we’ve achieved so far. Sonic City is De Kreun’s baby, a curated festival à la All Tomor-

Scene Report — Kortrijk

'Noisefest has become one of the leading events in the noise genre today' row’s Parties but without the bungalows. This year, Vietcong curates it and the line-up is incredible: Thurston Moore, Total Control, Ho99o9, Chelsea Wolfe, Lightning Bolt, The Soft Moon etc… Not surprisingly for a town with Kortrijk’s history, there are quite a few noise-related events organised, including De Kreun’s annual Noisefest. I can’t think of any other club that organises anything like it. Through the years it has seen acts like Lust For Youth, Damien Dubrovnik, Sudden Infant, Helm and Consumer Electronics. Local noise labels include Usain Bolt Records, and Geluidsoverlast!!! and a shitload of local acts like Isaac, Kindviendelijk, All Shadows and Deliverance, Aske, Anus Nocturnum and Crucifix Eye. Noisefest has become one of the leading events in the noise genre today. A few years ago, Cinépalace joined in, which is hot spot for checking out all kinds of bands, but also for its vegan kitchen nights and parties. Over the last ten years the city changed so much – not always in a good way, but when it comes to music, I think we’re very spoiled. There were times when I used to hate this city, but today I’m truly Essentials happy living here. When it comes Music: Goose, Hitch, Balthazar, to underground music, Kortrijk Zucchini Drive, vvovnds, Amenra, SX can compete with the best. Venues: De Kreun, The Pit’s, Cinépalace, Budascoop

Mathieu Serruys (1988) is a graphic designer and an experimental musician, especially interested in creating bridges between both fields of his work. Serendipity is one of the key elements here: it's the potential error that tickles his interest. The organic, naturalistic character of his work comes from deep within: over the years, he has become increasingly inspired by the extremities of high alpine regions. For record label B.A.A.D.M., he collaborates with fellow designer Joris Verdoodt. And with Pauwel De Buck he’s setting up a series of concerts, called The Holiday Island. mathieuserruys.be baadm.org

Sinister Resonance The Mediumship of the Listener by David Toop David Toop is a longtime contributor for The Wire, was a member of The Flying Lizards and has collaborated with Brian Eno and Max Eastley; he’s recorded Yanomami shamanic rituals, produced dozens of records and written extensively about almost every sonic phenomena under the sun. Dude knows his shit. Sinister Resonance continues his study of sound in all its complexities, with its ability to be absent and present, to comfort and disturb, and the grip it holds on all of us from way before birth until our very last groan. As I flipped through it, I wondered if it would be an ironically fitting present for a deaf person. Sounds cruel, no? Surely an exploration of sound through the history of listening implies some sort of first-hand experience in the matter. But then again, silence is just as important as sound. And the silent sources from which Toop draws his parallels – paintings, novels, myths – convey a much wider scope of the meaning of sound, in which imagination and evocation play primary roles in the experience of listening, perhaps more important than the act itself. Sound is, after all, inherently intangible. Sinister Resonance is one of those books that’s like a good LSD trip: it grounds you and makes you take notice of otherwise banal phenomena in a way that subtly, sometimes insidiously but always decisively, shapes your perception and the way you perceive reality. So literally: tune into it.

Figures of Dissent Michel Khleifi

'In order to defend something one must love it, and to love it, one must know it.' (interview with N Gerts & G Khleifi) This time Figures of Dissent focuses on Michel Khleifi, a Palestine-born documentary filmmaker who lives, works and teaches in Brussels. The evening starts with a screening of his first and widely acclaimed feature documentary. Fertile Memory (1980) tells the tale of two women - a widow in her fifties who was compelled to work in an Israeli textile factory after her land was seized; and Sahar Khalife, a novelist who Khleifi had gotten to know through her writing - in which she examines the struggle of Palestinian women. The intimate portrait of both women reveals the traces of a double occupation in their lives: not only do they suffer from the Israeli domination but also from the restrictions imposed on them by the patriarchal society. (Courtisane) 09 December, STUK/Cinema ZED, Leuven

Films Art Documentary Program

OFF-off’s final programme of 2015 is also the last in a series devoted to sculpture in film. This screening features a film by the Dutch documentary filmmaker Johan van der Keuken on the Japanese artist Shinkichi Tajiti. 'I’ve admired his images for a long time. But to see how [he] magically transforms all that scrap iron into new shapes with new meaning, was an eye-opener. Since, I’ve always remembered well that literally everything can be of use.' 14 December, 20.30, Artcinema OFF-off, Ghent

An Autumn Afternoon Yasujirô Ozu, 1962

Yasujiro Ozu’s final masterpiece, An Autumn Afternoon, is the culmination of years of making films about family, close-quarters loneliness, dependence and, although Ozu never married, about marriage. Each of them unique and typical of his style and mise-en-scène, Ozu’s films are serene odes to the transience of life, to its recurring rites of passage, always the same but each time different. 22 December, 20.15, Buda, Kortrijk

Many of them established themselves as tobacco farmers. Pieter Geenen uses this piece of history as a starting point for his metaphorical documentary in which he compares migration to cultivating tobacco outside of its original habitat.

Few films can encapsulate an era and a time in a riveting and profound way. The Decline of Western Civilization does just that, capturing a turbulent and critically overlooked punk scene of 1980s' Los Angeles. With compiled interviews from band members such as the Germs, Black Flag and X, as well as the publishers of the Slash fanzine, documentarian Penelope Spheeris creates a riveting and insightful look at a sub-genre which was largely ignored at the start of the ‘80s. The hard-to-acquire cult documentary is now making its way to the big

This 23-year-old Canadian songwriter used to play the drums with Mac DeMarco before venturing out on his own in 2013. After sharing his home-recorded debut, Time, and later the lo-fi Strange Dreams with the world, Calder took up pseudonyms like Mold Boy and Fatal Relay to secretly post new and more daring work online. Nonetheless, his music still follows the same path, mixing indie-sounding guitars with a whiney, nostalgic voice and a whole lot of imperfections, which

Lead by the charismatic Carre Callaway, this LA-based quartet plays a rough-and-tumble grunge-sprinkled punk rock that is set to subtly release the beast in you. Surrounded by skilful bandmates – including Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit) and Fred Sablan (ex-Marilyn Manson) – the frontwoman venomously narrates the recent decay of good old rock in the most brutal and yet elegant manner. To initiate the momentum, the two-piece band Lushes will brighten up the stage with their energetic post/mathrock.

what Bob Dylan expresses with words. While musician and composer Maarten Van Cauwenberghe – partner in the theatre company Voetvolk – plays vinyls by the American singer-songwriter, dancer/choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez inhabits the stage with the minimalism of her performance. More than a solo dance show, it is above all an intimate and intricate dialogue between the musician, the dancer and Bob Dylan.

15-19 December - KVS, Brussels 20.00 | €20 | Free for members A creation of Belgian theatre troupe Peeping Tom, 32 rue Vanderbranden is a fabulous insight into the life of an isolated community whose definitions of private and public tend to overlap. Beside the contorting bodies of the human characters, natural elements and artificial constructions are also the actors of the simultaneously surreal and down-to-earth scenery. The acting ensemble is accompanied by the humming and singing of mezzosoprano Eurudike de Beul.

Performed for the first time in 1999, this piece enacted by Belgian choreographer Wim Vandekeybus’ dance company Ultima Vez and soundtracked by Talking Heads’ former frontman David Byrne received international acclaim and was then followed by a cinematographic adaptation. More than 15 years later, this same thematic approach of primal desire is staged by an entirely new all-male cast that still transcends human constraints in a wondrously diverse and powerful theatrical representation.

Emerging from the friendship of singer/guitarist Katie Monks and guitar player Liz Ball, this selfproclaimed ‘soft grunge’ band from Toronto have come together around their mutual admiration for legends like The Pixies, Kurt Cobain and Pete Doherty. With such influences, it’s no wonder that Dilly Dally creates an aggressive and mournful ode to life that is loaded with a great deal of desire and purple rage – coincidentally, also the titles of two of their tracks.

Three bands, three different countries, all one and the same goal: placing visuals and performance centre stage. While Peruvian Felipe Salmon and Rafael Pereira from Dengue Dengue Dengue invoke a tropical vibe with a gruelling bass, Italian duo Ninos du Brasil is all about the drums, recalling Brazilian fiestas with a mixture of Batacuda, punk and minimal techno. The third of the triumvirate is the Swiss Libanese Praed, an improv psychadelica DJ set which basically sounds like a cab ride in India com-

Two years after its first edition, we are very proud to bring SOBU back for a second round. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you some of today’s best underground acts, ranging from heavy noise rock to distorted synth, to EBM. Head over to our focus pages for a detailed overview of the cool kids we have lined up: Youff, Shetahr, Kassett, Cocaine Piss, Mathieu Serruys, Wulfy Benzo, Orphan Swords, Mittland Och Leo, Roman Hiele, Different Fountains.

Agenda — Focus by Julien Van de Casteele & Gabriela Gonzalez

The Sound Of The Belgian Underground Since its creation in 2011, Subbacultcha has been promoting the most progressive independent music and art of the moment. The organisation has found an ideal working model to support fascinating acts from local and foreign soils in an early stage, with the assistance of its membership, monthly magazine and concerts. Under the title ‘The Sound Of The Belgian Underground’, Subbacultcha and AB collect local musical talent that is active on the fringe; bands that focus on artistic freedom and not necessarily the public at large. Here’s the line-up. 31 January - AB, Brussels

Youff Youff is a drums and bass duo that produces fast-paced and chaotic noise rock. Formed just three years ago, the band has already released BAIT, a strong four-track EP that was recorded throughout rehearsal and jam sessions.

klunky guitar riffs and the pounding beat of raging energy incarnate. Moody, eloquently absurd and unapologetically raw, nobody loves this band as much as you will. Kassett The boy from Rumst, and also the man behind DRLR records, produces his melancholic electro tunes from the back of his bedroom by stitching samples with some of his own recordings.

Shetahr The three-headed beast named Shetahr is making its mark through a gaggle of nonsensical lyrics,

60

Agenda — Focus Roman Hiele With an educational background in classical music and a dexterity for the violin and contrabass, Hiele decided to homeschool himself in making electronic soundscapes with synthesizers.

Wulfy Benzo Young and hungry: these are the first two things that come to mind when you see Wulfy Benzo. With his own take on brainy, unconventional and very much out-there rap, Wulfy is not one for limitations.

Mittland Och Leo

Orphan Swords Menacing industrial beats verging on techno is the product of Orphan Swords’ quest to experiment and tease dance music. The Brusselsbased duo have been catching a lot of attention for their mature sound and bringing EBM back to life with a modern touch. Different Fountains ‘Soulcore junkpop’ is how this Brussels-based Austro-Venezuelan duo describe the music genre they have been making since 2010. Bernardo on guitar and contrabass, Michael on sampler and synths, Different Fountains guarantees some of the most unconventional live setups you’ll ever see.

Joke Leonare and Milan Warmoeskerken have landed with their synth-powered, beat-infused ethereal melodies. Their highly-lauded LP, Optimists, is full of aural, atmospheric tropicalia evoking a Kirby's Dreamland take on exotica, making this power duo the true sweethearts of the underground.

Cocaine Piss Searing and screeching all the way from Liège, this female-fronted outfit is the redefinition of fast and furious. With their harsh barrage of overpowering snippets, the energy from this trio is nothing but contagious. Steve Albini can confirm.

Mathieu Serruys The Ghent-based noise explorer has landed to show his delicate, hypnotising dreamscapes, all of which betray an acute appreciation of texture and layering in sound.
