Put your triceps, hamstrings, glutes and deltoids in a bag; add your eardrums, visual cortex and hippocampus, and have them dissolve into the one giant, pulsating appendage to be subjected to endless, ecstatic reps. One that’s been on our radar for a while: the current Mecca of photo bookshops in Brussels is on Munthofstraat, it’s called Tipi and it’s boss. Focusing mainly on independent and self-published titles, their range and scope is impressive, and each visit is full of discoveries and surprises. Don’t be put off by the hefty price tags: the appreciation for craftsmanship is palpable in their selection, where the accent is not only on content but on presentation of publications that are closer to artefacts than books. Marta Bisbal’s gorgeous zine/film reel Kosmos is a fitting example. An unmissable visit next time Saint Gilles finds you, as it is prone to do.

Do a search on this guy and first thing you’ll find is that he was part of Banksy’s infamous Dismaland project last summer. Search a little further and it’ll become abundantly clear that Brock Davis is truly an artist of our times. Clever, cheeky, completely aloof yet piercingly observant, Davis has no single defining medium or style, apart from his trademark skewed worldview. A cucumber is clearly a killer whale. Stonehenge is made of Rice Krispies. Tree houses can be built on broccoli. It all makes sense the way he presents it, and it’s apt that one of his first exhibition spaces was his family fridge. Woods Woods, the psych-rock folk band formed by Jeremy and Jarvis in Brooklyn back in 2005, has a maturity and experience within the music scene that can be inspiring for any young artists taking their first few steps into the industry. Jeremy, lead singer and guitarist, took us for a stroll down the streets of Greenpoint, showed us his local pub and apartment, while we chatted about the early years of the band and how the music scene has evolved since then Interview by Sasha Ermakov Photos by Richard Perez, shot in Brooklyn

I was just listening to your new record. The production is a bit different. This is the first record made entirely in a studio setting, right? Yep. Yeah, we recorded it at a studio in Greenpoint in Brooklyn. The last record, we recorded probably about 85% of it in a studio, but there were a couple of home-recorded elements, but this one was completely recorded at this studio Thump, in Greenpoint.

Woods How did that feel? Oh, it felt great. The place is kind of a studio in a small building, almost like an apartment building. It’s got a very at-home kind of feel. What made you decide to record this particular album entirely in a studio? I guess we were sort of trying new things. We’ve basically done everything ourselves for the last eight records, and Jarvis, who does most of the production, has been working at Thump on some other projects. We’re just getting more comfortable in that situation, and they have much better gear than we do at home. It’s the next step, the next logical evolution to the sound that we’re going for. What have you learned in the past ten years making these records? Well, I guess the constant is me and Jarvis. We’re so good at working together that we bounce ideas off each other, in this really great way where we’re kind of similar, you know? So I guess we’ve managed to sort of fine tune our relationship recording and writing together, to the point where it’s just super easy, and we work really fast and efficiently together. Also, for the last two records we’ve had the same people playing and touring, and so for this new one the band has brought into the studio a sound that’s more similar to what we do live. Has the music scene changed since your first record? Yeah, it’s quite different now. I feel a bit remote from it. I guess when we started there were a lot more DIY venues and bands. Sometimes we would play a couple of times a week, and there were multiple venues where you could just set up these DIY shows pretty easily. Nowadays, there aren’t many spaces like that any more, it’s, you know, kind of a proper venue

‘To my past self I guess I would say, “Slow down a bit and take a little more time to think about writing and recording, and not to rush to release things”’ scene. Now we only play New York a certain amount of times just based on touring schedules and playing larger venues and stuff like that. So, I guess the scene has changed, but I’m not really sure what happened. I guess the biggest thing is that a lot of the DIY venues have closed. Gentrification happened fast, and it definitely pushed out a lot of these smaller venues that can’t pay the rent any more. I don’t know if there’s a new group of younger bands, kind of coming up like we did, around 2005-’06, I’m like totally out of it, so I don’t see it any more. Do you miss those DIY venues? I do, I miss being able to go down and check out a new and exciting band. I kinda feel like that’s sort of lost right now. I know that there are places, but I’ve just been so busy with other things that I haven’t been able to check them out. But I miss the sense of community that there once was around that time. What’s one of your best memories of playing with Woods? Hmmm wow. There’s been a lot… but let’s see… I guess some of the early shows. Around 2009, we played at SXSW and I did a Woodsist showcase, at this place called Mrs. B’s, and that was just like this giant fun experience where we had all these really good bands playing and thousands of people showed up. I would say it’s the last time that I remember SXSW being fun. I

haven’t been in years, but I think it sort of changed a little bit, and became more corporate and more sterile. Before it was just this wild fun time, and I’m not sure we’ll experience that again. It was around that time, where there were all these really good bands coming out of Brooklyn and California. We all sort of knew each other and everybody had basically just put out their first record and had started to get attention from the music media. So it all sort of fit at this one point, and that particular show was a good example of how it was growing so fast. What advice would you give your past self? Ah, to my past self I guess I would say, ‘Slow down a bit and take a little more time to think about writing and recording, and not to rush things out.’

Endgame For the past year, the HE4RTBROKEN parties have been introducing Brusselsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; nightgoers to a revolutionary underground club scene that has some of its roots in the south-east of London. Among these south of the Thames revolutionaries, there is ENDGAME, who gives his own take on reggaeton, applying dark beats and soundscapes to create a twisted atmosphere. In preparation for his gig in Brussels this month, we decided to explore the older and lesserknown areas of The Barbican together, while we discussed his relationship with clubs and the importance of staying true to yourself

Interview You’re quite proactive in London’s progressive club scene – with your show on NTS Radio but also through the Bala Club and Endless nights. What’s your relation to the club? I see the club as a space to cut loose and be yourself. My friends and I felt there wasn’t anything for us, so we built it ourselves. It’s a place for outsiders to feel at home, for people that feel that they don’t belong elsewhere. The NTS Radio show is the same in a way. It’s like a place for music that doesn’t fit in anywhere. We’ve never cared if anyone from the industry comes or talks about it. It’s for us first. It’s about unity and solidarity. How does it influence you as a producer, and as a DJ? It’s encouraging me to stay true to what I believe in. What’s your club culture DNA? I was really into hardcore and metal as a teenager and I started going to clubs and grime raves when I was about 17. I was always attracted to the energy and that people went there to lose themselves and escape from their daily lives. This has really influenced my approach to making music and DJ-ing. I want people to feel free. How would you describe London’s club scene right now? Kinda peak. There are very few good raves and venues. You really have to do your own thing and find your own space. You’ll be playing with Uli-K and Mechatok here in Brussels. How did you meet them? I met Uli-K and Kamixlo some years ago at a party that Lexxi was organising.

‘You really have to do everything for yourself, hold it down, put in work and make money where you can’ We clicked immediately and realised we had a lot of the same influences and ideas, and we’ve been really close friends ever since. I’ve only met Mechatok kinda recently, but yeah he’s definitely a kindred spirit, and one of the best producers and DJs I know! You’re also involved a great deal in fashion and arts, I’m thinking of your collaborations with Cottweiler and Primitive. Is there a common statement that you find with music? Cottweiler and Primitive have been close friends for years, and yeah I don’t see any distinction between collaborating musically and visually. They approach creative expression in the same way; that is, pure and unfiltered. They’re also really interested in a kind of utopian vision of the future that I find really inspiring How do you feel about the creative industry today in London? How do underground artists or musicians survive the economic situation? It’s super difficult, you really have to do everything for yourself, hold it down, put in work and make money where you can. Scene Report — Beijing Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! So we feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report. This month we talked with Joshua Frank, a musician and filmmaker, who grew up in Beijing and lives there currently. He plays bass and synthesizer in Hot & Cold with his brother, Simon I was born in Montreal, but have actually spent more time cumulatively in Beijing than any other city. Hot & Cold, too, has shifted between Beijing, Montreal, Toronto, New York, New Delhi and Taipei. We’ve released music on our own collective label, Rose Mansion Analog, as well as Beijing’s Genjing Records and US labels Night People and Moniker Records. Our latest record is a split 7” with another brother band from Florida, Tonstartssbandht. I also play in two other Beijing duos, the percussive bass and guitar group 工工工 (Gong Gong Gong) and electronic project JDK-X. Beijing is the closest thing I’ve experienced to home, and the only place I’ve really engaged with in a meaningful way while growing up. It’s also the harshest, most inhospitable place I’ve ever lived in – hot summers, cold winters, smog. The boulevards were built for military parades rather than pedestrians, and old buildings are torn down and refigured as new replicas of traditional architecture. The first show Hot & Cold played at an actual music venue was in Beijing in 2006. It was at D-22, a seminal bar that was the spiritual home to a new wave of rock, punk and experimental groups from 2005 until it closed in 2011. Our duo began as a no wave-inspired noise band, with smashing

‘Beijing’s reputation tends to be one of a rock music city – raw, uninhibited and tough’ gongs and shouting through megaphones, and gradually warped from that into post-punk, transnational blues and barebones psychedelic electronic music. I think we would still consider ourselves a band born out of Beijing. Beijing’s reputation tends to be one of a rock music city – raw, uninhibited and tough – which stems from its urban environment and climate. Shanghai is more polished, with greater emphasis on electronic music and DJs. There’s interaction between the cities’ scenes, but both are respected for different styles of music, and attract different musicians and audiences. There’s a narrative in a lot of international reporting on Chinese music, which goes, ‘Look at these Chinese punk-rockers opposing Communist rule!’ In reality, there aren’t many bands that have an explicitly anti-government message, and the few that do, honestly, don’t make very interesting-sounding music. Actually, the most threatening thing that a band or producer can accomplish is to build a grassroots community. That’s what arouses government suspicion, however unjustified it seems. The positive response to a lot of music venues facing government pressure is that more alternative spaces are hosting performances, which has had an interesting effect on the atmosphere of music events, and I think made them feel friendlier in a scene where people are sometimes too shy to strike up conversation. The weekly experimental music series and label Zoomin Night emerged out of the D-22 scene in 2009. When D-22’s younger sibling, XP, closed down last year, Zhu Wenbo, the organiser of Zoomin Night, started hosting shows in an underpass beside the airport expressway near his apartment. Lately, more shows have been happening at fRUITYSPACE, a stageless venue and mini-record store in a basement underneath a hotpot restaurant near the National Art Gallery. Because of noise complaints from neighbours, most performances are matinee shows. It makes for a good weekend afternoon, and everyone usually goes out to eat together afterwards. At the start of this year, my brother Simon, my band-mate Tom Ng from 工工工 and I organised a mini-festival in Beijing. It was scheduled at Aotu, an improbable gallery and hair salon tucked in a grimy alley behind a subway station, but we had to change venues at the last minute. We ended up switching the location to one of our favourite bars, SOS, which had never hosted a performance before. It’s a small spot run by a couple; free jazz saxophist Wang Ziheng and drummer Zhou Qi. There’s a bar counter on one side, a fridge full of beer on the other, and a massive foam Japanese Essentials tengu mask stuck to the ceiling with Labels: Genjing Records, Maybe its nose hanging dangerously close to Mars, Nasty Wizard, Sinotronics, people’s heads. People DJ music off Zoomin Night their phones, and on a good night Promoters and events: Antidote, the tables are covered in empty botDo Hits, Miji, Pangbianr, Subjam, tles and sunflower seed shells. Bert Jacobs Wow. I can see why you like this place. Yeah, there are endless possibilities. There’s no one to take into account, no one to justify to. It’s a place for collectiveness; a place where we can invite people to, where we can organise events, exchange ideas. I feel like improvising and building here. The company left loads of objects, there’s wood, space, mirrors… It feels like a huge playground. Do you collect a lot? I used to. In the beginning my work could come into existence just by collecting and sorting materials or objects. When I lived in Ghent, my friends and I organised events and exhibitions in my house. It was like a cabinet of curiosities. Every time we changed the scenography. Through that organic process of experimenting with space and art we ended up with installations. How do you work nowadays? Well, I was thinking about my creative process earlier, and how to explain it, so I wrote down some stuff [laughs]. You see, in general I work pretty intuitively, very in the moment. That’s why my work differs greatly depending on the moment or the location. Every piece of work is like a story or a memory. These can be of something tangible or of a situation

– it doesn’t matter – but my art is mostly about creating images. Are installations about creating an image as well? Yes, but also creating an experience. I was living in Norway for a while, and there I saw lots of landslides in the forest. In nature, when something is unstable, it breaks down. But in its fall it always finds stability again. So I recreated what I saw there in a temporary installation. I collected wood, dried it, piled it up and it ended up looking like a big waterfall of wood. It sculptured itself until finding stability. In the installation, I try to relive and understand different aspects of my experience. I like that kind of dialogue between coincidence and meaning. Not in a ‘meant to be’ kind of way, but more like playing with the ambivalence between control and letting go, chaos and order. I try not to think about the why and how too much; to be as little conscious about the creative process as possible. It’s thoughts that catch me or things I encounter that initiate creativity, and the less I think about it the more the result pleases me.

The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky & Mœbius There is a great introductory documentary about Mœbius, that mythical cartoonist and writer without whom today’s sci-fi vernacular would be far less colourful and psychotic. In it, Alejandro Jodorowsky, frequent co-conspirator in dementedness, speaks with the usual cryptic, whimsical tone about their joint collaborations. The best-known is the Dune that never was. An esoteric dystopia, heavy on symbolism to the point of inanity yet not without a healthy undercurrent of satire; that’s what the so-called Jodoverse of Mœbius and Jodorowsky has in store for us. While it never materialised as a film, the Jodoverse can be fully appreciated in the graphic novel series The Incal. Originally printed in French back in the ’80s, it’s been translated and reprinted numerous times, the most recent English edition published by Humanoids – supposedly with the nudity censored but with plenty of boobs in my copy. It must be said, the story is full-on insane, filled with pyramidal structures, talking pterodactyls and cosmic rites of worship for the elusive Light Incal sought after by cops, cults and birdlike aliens alike. The characters are, of course, modelled after cards of the Tarot. The hero, John DiFool, should be a clear indicator of what’s to come. The artwork is mind-blowing and perfectly apt to whatever Jodorowsky’s vision of the day was, conveying through mesmerisingly complex structures and fluidly interplaying elements the magnitude of the seer’s ambitions. Indeed, the lack of a tangible plot is irrelevant to the hold of this novel: like the Incal itself, its power is in its substance, in its subtle, inescapable grip.

It led to a multidimensional work reflecting on migration, persecution and identity.

03 June - Cinema Zuid, Antwerp 18.00 | €5 | Free for members Iremar works at the Vaquejadas, a form of rodeo, practiced in the north-east of Brazil, in which two men on horseback try to bring a bull down by grabbing its tail. Despite fitting naturally in the macho world of the Vaqueiros, Iremar is a calm and lonely man and aspires to be a fashion designer. Swinging in his hammock in the back of the truck of his travelling company, he dreams of pattern cuts and soft fabrics. Director of photography Diego García captures these reveries exquisitely and contrasts them with the harsh world of traditional Brazilian rodeo. No wonder the film earned the Venice Horizons Award – Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival this summer.

In his book Retromania, music critic Simon Reynolds argued that current pop culture is a constant recycling of past musical tropes, a habit that will eventually lead to its demise. While you couldn’t get more retro than playing a medieval instrument such as the lute, Jozef van Wissem has both feet firmly planted in the present and his gaze towards the future. His arrangements place the morphed tones of this instrument amidst swirling guitar drones. This results in bewitching music, which soundtracked Jim Jarmusch’s vampire flick Only Lovers Left Alive. In Corso Sankt Vith, he will provide live music to the silent film Partir to Live.

Empress Of, or Lorely Rodriguez, is a true solo artist. With the exception of a couple of drum parts, she was in charge of the writing, performing, producing and engineering of each song on her new album. In her music, Rodriguez combines vulnerability with strength. Her personal, and sometimes critical, lyrics speak to many of us. The strong and upbeat music counters the honest lyrics, preventing the recalled memories from becoming dramatic recollections. After sadness and confusion often comes euphoria.

From a chronological and linear perspective, though, that same geographical space is a collection of memories, clues and emotions referring to a certain epoch and its specificities. With Here, a six-page comic published in 1989 in the anthological RAW, New Jersey-born Richard McGuire creates a memorable societal piece of work depicting life at the present time and going all the way back to prehistory and sees his career take an incredibly successful turn. Multi-instrumentalist of the graphic arts, McGuire is also an illustrator, a video animator, a book author and... a bass player.

One minute into City Sun Eater in the River of Light, the latest album by Californian outfit Woods, you are in for a surprise. Their sound always evoked images of orange Californian sunsets, so the blend of psych-folk and tropical sounds they attempt on their eighth album sounds completely natural. Don’t forget your sunglasses when you go see them at DOK.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, George Lucas made the most successful sci-fi saga of all times and a thousand blatant ripoffs followed in his wake. Two of these Star Wars-ploitation flicks, Starcrash by Luigi Cozzi and Battle Beyond the Stars by Jimmy T Murakami, will be screened in the Cinametek. With an average IMDB score of 4.5 you know what to expect: pure unfiltered guilty pleasure. These movies are packed full of cardboard spaceships, badly made-up meanies and cheeky cleavage.

Centre stage in this libretto are three fugitives who found a pleasure town in a desolate no man’s land. Sharks from all over flock to the bait and the three fugitives profit excessively from their weaknesses, until the town becomes a living hell. The flamboyant production by Calixto Bieito in Opera Vlaanderen is as illustrious as the original written by German composer Kurt Weill.
