Gluten is a protein composite found in cereal grains such as wheat, rye and barley. Eating too much of it can lead to a decreased energy level. So if you find yourself wondering why gluten-free foods have suddenly become all the rage and why gluten-free diets are so popular, then take a bow, eat Maca, spice up your smoothie with cabbage and read that flyer about Iswari Superfoods next time you go bioshopping. Subbacultcha! is in it for the show and we need all the energy we can get. Join the force. We’re back! Page 3

Apostille

http://soundcloud.com/apostille

Apostille is the new electro-ecstatic solo project of Michael Kasparis, of psych-garage outfit Please and Night School Records fame. From speaker-shredding basement shows at London’s DIY hub Power Lunches to sublime support slots for R. Stevie Moore and John Maus, these last few months have seen Kasparis grow into his new primal-pop trousers, now ragged about the dancing knees. Using only a microphone, a sampler and a keyboard, Apostille is both about selfrealisation and actively engaging an audience, often amidst decidedly dark subject matter. Insistent flickering beats hold down a sturdy framework for Apostille’s clouds of echoed vocals and synth cluster quests. Sometimes Kasparis’ voice soars above the music, hanging there like an apparition. Other times he makes his cloaked notes surge forwards, bouncing between distorted handclaps, wonky bass lines and oblique incantations, to a deliriously wondrous effect. Apostille’s debut 7" is out now on the ever-awesome Manchester label Comfortable On A Tightrope. It’s a double A-side featuring standout live brain-bangers ‘The Road To War and Wrong’ rubbing shoulders. The cover is bright orange with a spider-like crab creature clawing its way towards you. Something very wicked your way comes. Page 9

Octo Octa

Brooklyn-based house producer Octo Octa is heading to Belgium early April and we couldn’t be more curious to ask him all about his secret diet. Being part of the extremely healthy 100% Silk crew, Mike Morrison guaranteed us that he’s feeling more awake during the day now that he’s discovered gluten-free lunches. Here is where all that extra energy leads to: sexy salads, anti-wheat ballads and enzyme battles! Interview by Will Martin Photos shot by Bobby Doherty in Brooklyn, USA

As a computer musician, it’s easy to get carried away and lock yourself up in the studio, not eating much, slowing down your metabolism and generally living a fairly unhealthy lifestyle. Do you have any particular dietary or health regimes that help offset this? An older man (who dresses kind of like a cowboy) who frequents my

work suggested his diet to me, which is pretty much just yogurt, fruit, and various nuts. So I’ve been doing that for lunch for a while, which is great, but dinner-wise it’s still pretty much a shitshow of tan and brown foods. I’ve also been trying to go to the gym regularly with my wife to offset my beer gut. Seems to be working! Page 13

‘I’ll dive into overindulgence if it’s something like tacos. Tacos bring out the glutton in me I guess.’

What about on tour? Is overindulgence a concern? I barely eat on tour. I pretty much only get to have dinner, which means I’ll eat anything as long as it has calories. Any other food consumed is normally just bread, since it’s cheap and filling. As for overindulgence, I guess I don’t really think about it. I’ll dive into overindulgence if it’s something like tacos. Tacos bring out the glutton in me I guess. House music as a genre doesn’t necessarily seem overly concerned with health issues. Have you ever felt compelled to change this? I don’t think anyone is looking to dance to music that will scold their hedonism! I think house should try to continue as a genre that helps you get away from things. I don’t think I’ll be releasing anything in the future that will be asking, ‘Did you drink enough water today?’. …and after the party? Are you at all ritualistic in your methods for curing hangovers? I need to find some methods. Page 14

Curling into a ball and sweating profusely while your skin crawls on a plane isn’t fun. Hydration was drilled into me growing up, so it seems like the best thing to do in most situations. That and drinking all coffee available. What about alternative detox methods? Fasting, coffee enemas etc. Haven’t tried any yet, but I’m sure the day will come when I’ll look for any relief I can. Maybe I’ll start using those weird pads you put on the bottom of your foot that draw out toxins as you sleep. Has gluten ever caused you any trouble? Other than getting drunker than I intended from beer? I don’t think so. But, since having no gluten at lunch, I’ve been more awake during the day. Though that may have more to do with not eating garbage every day and less about my gluten-free meals. What about veganism? Do you have any connection with it? My wife has been a vegetarian since she was nine and has eaten vegan for some stretches. So I’ve kind of done it also by just being with her. I

‘Someone smells better if they’re not eating meat all the time, but I don’t think seeing someone wreck a salad is gonna get me going. Then again, maybe if it was a sexy salad’ applaud those who are into it, but I like cheese a little too much to go for it. The siren call of dairy is tough to disregard. Do you think vegetarianism is sexy? Someone smells better if they’re not eating meat all the time, but I don’t think seeing someone wreck a salad is gonna get me going. Then again, maybe if it was a sexy salad. What about the sex appeal of wholegrain pasta? A curvy noodle!? Are you kidding me? Who wouldn’t get excited? So basically what you’re saying is that a gluten-free diet isn’t sexy. Stay away from quinoa if you want to get laid? I am sure here in Brooklyn one could find a great gluten-free fetish community to get into. I hear the freaks dig quinoa. And it’s all about the freaks. Do you think people adapt their diets in relation to who they are sleeping with? Having the same diet will definitely get you laid more, but may-

be you gotta do the opposite once you break up. Just purge that person’s ideas from your body. Maybe double down on the bread or dairy. Get a baguette going in each hand. If Morrissey is the musical ambassador for veganism, who do the gluten-free kids have? Amanda Brown? She’s a raw foodist. That’s gluten-free, right? I want to hear the person who writes anti-wheat ballads. What about Octo Octa? The Late Nite Amaranth Sex Jams EP has a certain ring to it. You could sample some Zooey Deschanel, apparently she has celiac disease. Nice! I gotta stay with the times. I need that gimmick. Now I gotta figure out the stage show for it. Enzyme battles? Octo Octa plays live on 05 April at Troya in Ghent. The show is free for Subbacultcha! members.

Melody’s Echo Chamber

Formerly of The Narcoleptic Dancers and My Bee’s Garden, Melody Prochet has now embraced dream-pop with her Melody’s Echo Chamber project. The classically trained Parisian recruited Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker to produce her self-titled debut, making those closed-eye visuals a reality. Melody talked to us about her weakness for dried figs and meditation. ‘I never eat before a show because most of the time I’m really nervous...’ Interview by Gerlin Heestermans Photos shot by Camille Balenieri in Paris, France

Do you ask for something special on your rider, food-wise? We’re a young band, so we don’t really have the luxury to ask for crazy things. But I really have a passion for dried figs. No one in the band understands why I love them so much. I do, dried figs are amazing. Do you generally try to eat healthily on tour? Yeah. When we were touring the US, we would try to go to Whole Foods as much as possible and eat organic food. So we’re really trying to eat healthily. We don’t want to get too fat. It’s not always easy though. When you’re on the road, you’re more than often travelling from one truck stop to the other, so we have a lot of sandwiches and hamburgers as well. Touring through Europe, bands generally tend to get treated very well in terms of food (also in part because of the food culture here I reckon) but I bet the US is very different in that respect. Do promoters ever actually provide you with any food? That depends. Sometimes they do. But most of the time you have to look after yourself. Grab a bite on the road while you’re driving from one place to the other. But that’s fun. We do our best to get some proper food. Would you consider yourself a healthy person? Page 20

These days I’m really into eating healthily, yeah. I try to eat mostly organic. I feel better when I do. But sometimes I love to eat junk food as well. I’m also into meditation. I got really inspired by David Lynch’s Transcendental Meditation methods recently. I just finished reading one of his books about it and it really opened my eyes. I’m trying to keep my brain and consciousness healthy as well. Does that mean you’re regularly found meditating on tour? I haven’t tried it yet but I think it’s certainly possible. I’m definitely planning on giving it a try on the next tour. Just sit down for a while before the show to get relaxed. Do you eat before playing a show or are you too nervous to do that? I never eat before a show because most of the time I’m really nervous, yeah. It’s not a nice feeling to be too full before or during a show either. But after the show I am really hungry. Who is the healthiest person you know? That has to be Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear, who is a friend of mine. He’s really into healthy food and cooking. He does yoga as well. Hah seems like meditation is the new big thing with artists/musicians! Guess so! I think it’s really important in order not to go crazy. You

have to find ways to keep your creativity flowing and not care too much about what other people think. You need to want it. I think it’s a good way to get rid of stress, anger, anxiety and fear. This issue is all about gluten-free food. For a lot of people, the term gluten-free is associated with the term hipster. How do you feel about that? And do you eat gluten-free yourself ? ‘Hipsters’. I think that’s a silly word. I don’t really know what it means, actually. Personally I just try to Page 22

avoid gluten as much as possible because I feel it makes me fat. But I’m not obsessed with eating gluten-free. It’s almost impossible to do on tour anyway. And I definitely don’t consider myself to be a hipster. It’s not a nice word. I’m just really curious about art and I think staying healthy is very important. I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for your insights, Melody. Melody’s Echo Chamber play at Botanique, Brussels on 08 March.

Scene Report

Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! From now on we’ll feed your hunger for gossip, insights and secrets in the Scene Report. This very first edition tells you all you want to know about the Lexington scene (Kentucky, USA), home for bands such as Idiot Glee, Street Gnar, and many more. ‘We’re all friends and there’s too much bleed-over stylistically to put everyone in their own corner’ Text by James Friley Photos shot by Coleman Guyon and Melissa Carter in Lexington, Kentucky, USA

Lexington, Kentucky has been my home for six years now. It’s beautiful here. The music scene is amazing. We’re close to dozens of bigger cities so touring is easy. The list goes on… Case has been here just as long. We moved here in ’06 to go to school and we never left. Coleman’s lived here his entire life. I’m James Friley. I’ve been recording and performing as Idiot Glee for

just over three years now. Case Mahan does the same as Street Gnar. Coleman Guyon is a videographer who’s got several excellent music videos under his belt. He also performs as Trailblazer. When we got here we met the noise guys: Robert Beatty, Eric Lanham, Mikey T, Chris Bush, Trevor Tremaine, Matt Minter, Ben Allen, etc. You probably know them by their Page 25

‘The Sidecar is a tiny hole-in-the-wall bar with a shitty PA and just enough room for 50 people. It’s perfect’ bands. Hair Police did some touring with Sonic Youth years ago. They’re an amazing three-piece featuring Robert, Trevor, and Mikey Connelly from Wolf Eyes. Eric and Chris are Caboladies. Mikey’s ever-evolving band was Warmer Milks. They disbanded and Mikey went on to form CROSS. One of the earliest things Case and I ever did was record at Robert’s house for the Resonant Hole Vol. 1 compilation. Somewhere along the line a lot of these guys took their experimental sensibilities and started applying them to pop music. Robert’s Three Legged Race is now leaning towards minimal techno. Trevor’s ATTEMPT is straight up Steely Danesque smooth rock and Eric makes amazing house music as Carl Calm. Ben is doing Live Island now. I was definitely influenced by these guys. They come from noise and I come from rock. Over time we all started to meet in the middle to some extent. The scene here is incredibly supportive. Recently, Coleman and I Page 26

joined Case to form Street Gnar as a full band. There’s also hairy man Josh Blaine on guitar, who also plays in Jovontaes, a super good, sparse, psychedelic, kraut-y band on Hello Sunshine Records (sub-label of Woodsist). A lot of the scene here is focused around one particular block: Al’s Bar and Al’s Sidecar. The Sidecar is a tiny hole-in-the-wall bar with a shitty PA and just enough room for 50 people. It’s perfect. Everyone goes there: the punks, noise dudes, pop dudes... Really they’re all just labels. We’re all friends and there’s too much bleedover stylistically to put everyone in their own corner. Al’s Bar is next door. It’s a step up from the Sidecar but not by much. In the past I’ve booked bands there like Ariel Pink, Beach House, Soft Moon, Dent May, and dozens more. This summer, Case booked Dirty Beaches at the Sidecar on a Monday night. It was huge! He brought his crew, Eola and Run DMT, and they hung around for a few days. We had a blast. Alex and Makeout Videotape (Mac

‘You can drive ten minutes and be nowhere. You can drive thirty minutes and go to the most gorgeous state parks and gorges, natural bridges, and more. It’s inspirational’ DeMarco) had come through town two years previously and played for 15 people. Peaking Lights did the same. My first gig was actually with them. We played to 15 people at the Void Skateshop. It’s been so good to see all these guys get so much love lately! Speaking of Peaking Lights, Robert actually made the cover for their latest album, Lucifer. If you don’t know, Robert is the man when it comes to record covers: Real Estate, Peaking Lights, Burning Star Core, Matt Duncan, and more. Oh, and speaking of Matt Duncan, if you’re looking for amazing throwback soul pop, he’s the best! Another fine KY artist. The space here is amazing. Case and Coleman spent some time living in New York. Case worked at Captured Tracks and then Sniper’s (Mike Sniper, the man behind Captured Tracks, ed.) record shop. Coleman worked on music videos. It was draining though, financially, and it’s just hard to get as much done there. Lexington is cheaper. There are tons

of creative people here: great artists, musicians, writers… It’s all here. You can drive ten minutes and be nowhere. You can drive 30 minutes and go to the most gorgeous state parks and gorges, natural bridges, and more. It’s inspirational. Last year Case put out a tape of B-sides from his record Study Wall on Gnar Tapes. He’s got another excellent new pop record coming out soon. I’ve got an EP out 26 February this year. And then I’ll have a new LP out later this year! Coleman is working on a music video for me right now, too. We’re all staying busy and working together. Essential Lexington spots: Al’s bar, Al’s Sidecar, Land Of Tomorrow Essential Lexington bands: Hair Police, Idiot Glee, Street Gnar, Matt Duncan Page 29

Dignan Porch

02 March - Madame Moustache, Brussels 20.00 | €5 | Free for Subbacultcha! members

London’s Dignan Porch remain the only UK band on the storied Captured Tracks roster. While the band’s first record, 2010’s Tendrils, was performed and recorded by singer Joe Walsh alone, Walsh subsequently recruited family and friends to form a five-piece band. The reinvented Dignan Porch just released their first album together last summer, titled Nothing Bad Will Ever Happen. These guys wear their ’90s influences on their flannelled sleeves, but imbue them with enough youthful optimism and odd touches to transform them into easy-going and highly hummable fuzzy pop songs.

Chad Valley

04 March - Botanique, Brussels 19.30 | €16 | Free for Subbacultcha! members

Coincidentally or not, a great many of the artists initially tagged as chillwave, such as Toro y Moi, Ducktails and Washed Out, have ended up following a similar trajectory away from the use of hazy soundscapes and buried vocals towards more traditional pop song structures. Oxford native Hugo Manuel’s work as Chad Valley is no exception, since his new full-length debut, Young Hunger, shows that he too had a hankering for something more substantial than the Balearic bliss of his early EPs. Iceage

06 March - Effenaar, Eindhoven (NL) 20.00 | €10 | Free for Subbacultcha! members Like the Vikings before them, these boys come from Denmark to shake things up. But Iceage use axes of a different kind: with their minimalist sound they take stabs at both American hardcore and British post-punk. Get ready to pogo frantically in a desperate attempt to stay warm this winter!

Movie: Desperate Living

07 March - KASKcinema, Ghent 20.30 | €5 | Free for Subbacultcha! members

The seemingly uncomplimentary worlds of feminine fascism, organised lesbianism, and hippie nudism clash like they’ve never clashed before in this uproarious cult movie by the great filmmaker John Waters.

The Dubtapes

14 March - Vooruit, Ghent 20.00 | €14 | Free for Subbacultcha! members

The Dubtapes is an audiovisual performance in which drummer/composer Jens Bouttery and filmmaker Daan Milius investigate the musical dimensions of the spoken word. What started out as a series of interviews with artists such as Han Bennink and Josse De Pauw about satisfaction, goals, and personal utopia, resulted in a quest for meaning. Page 37

Rhyton + Decimus

14 March - Audioplant (Scheld’apen), Antwerp 18.00 | €5 | Free for Subbacultcha! members Rhyton features Dave Shuford (No Neck Blues Band), Jimy SeiTang (Psychic Ills), and Spencer Herbst (Messages, Matta Llama). Their latest album The Emerald Tablet is an excellent document of tripped-out modern instrumental rock, drawn from open minds and extraordinary musicianship. Also on the bill is Pat Murano, who makes analogue cosmic synth music under the moniker Decimus.

Jacco Gardner

29 March - De Kreun, Kortrijk 20.00 | €13 | Free for Subbacultcha! members

Jacco Gardner weaves harpsichord, strings, flutes and other classical instruments with raw psychedelic effects to produce classic-sounding and highly palatable Paisley pop. His debut album is called Cabinet of Curiosities and he’s got the Mad Hatter hat down, so you’d probably be wise to bring along your Alice in Wonderland blotter paper in preparation for a trip down the rabbit hole. Kraak Festival 02 March - Netwerk, Aalst If you are even remotely interested in the avant-garde and experimentalism, there should already be a huge red circle around 02 March in your calendar. The Kraak Festival is an annual festival with a reputation for being exceptionally contemporary while also being on hugging terms with the past. It’s definitely well worth the effort and exploration. This year’s highlights are sound artist Jonaš Gruska, Czech bard Jirí Wehle and Belgian avant-garde duo MAAN.

is something else entirely. Using unusual techniques and circular breathing, he manages to conjure a breathtaking variety of mournful, otherworldly sounds from his bass saxophone, creating stark and emotionally evocative work unlike anything else out there right now.

Petite Noir 07 March - STUK, Leuven Petite Noir is the moniker of 22-yearold Yannick Ilunga, a Brussels-born singer-songwriter of Congolese/Angolan descent. Natural, melodic African elements shimmer in his groovy and experimental soundscapes, which Ilunga describes as ‘noir wave’.

Metz 11 March - Ancienne Belgique, Brussels Like a spindly teenager turned beefcake, this Toronto power trio has used the five years since their live debut to transform their sound into the burly and robust posthardcore flexed on their self-titled 2012 debut. Following in the footsteps of aggressive predecessors like The Jesus Lizard, Metz was impressive enough in its own right to muscle its way onto more than a few ‘Best of 2012’ lists.

The Dubtapes 14 March - Vooruit, Ghent The Dubtapes is an audiovisual performance in which drummer/composer Jens Bouttery and filmmaker Daan Milius investigate the musical dimensions of the spoken word. Read more on page 37.

Rhyton + Decimus 14 March - Scheld’apen, Antwerp 29 March - Les Ateliers Claus, Brussels Rhyton’s latest album The Emerald Tablet is

an excellent chronicle of tripped-out modern instrumental rock, drawn from open minds and extraordinary musicianship. Read more on page 38.

Internal Sun 15 March - Kavka, Antwerp Internal Sun is audiovisual duo, Andrew ‘Chi’ Claes and graphic artist VJ Natché. Their self-titled debut EP is coming out this month and the duo is taking its glitchy, beat-driven act over to the Kavka stage for what will, without a doubt, be a spectacular release show.

Lorenzo Senni 15 March - KASKcinema, Ghent Italian producer Lorenzo Senni is responsible for one of the best sound patterns released this year. His latest opus Quantum Jelly consists of mind-blowing retro trance, recorded in one take with just one synth. No overdubs! No doubt a must-see.

The Men 15 March - De Kreun, Kortrijk 16 March - Magasin 4, Brussels Brooklyn four-piece The Men are as virile and no-frills as their name implies, playing hardcore post-punk that’s melodic, distorted and LOUD. They come off as the kind of dudes that would shove you in the pit but immediately pick you back up if you fell, foaming beers in hand, faces flushed and beaming all the while. Look out for their new Sacred Bones release New Moon at the beginning of March.

Yo La Tengo 16 March - Ancienne Belgique, Brussels If you had to judge by their musical output as two thirds of quintessential indie rock band Yo La Tengo, then Ira Kaplan and Page 43

Shows in March

Georgia Hubley must have a pretty awesome marriage. Since they formed the band in Hoboken, New Jersey back in 1984, they’ve released album after album of multifaceted, sprawling indie-rock imbued with a sense of peacefulness and playfulness you could seemingly only find when content. ‘Yo La Tengo’ means ‘I have it’ in Spanish, and that zen sense of confidence is reflected in every release.

The Feeling Of Love + Magnetix 21 March - Vaartkapoen, Brussels Born Bad Records has been a flagpole record label in the French rock ’n’ roll scene for quite a while now and they’ve put together a line-up that will shred your ears to pieces.

Nosaj Thing + Jeremiah Jae + Free The Robots 24 March - Vaartkapoen, Brussels Part of that rare breed of musicians that always hit and never miss, Nosaj Thing has had many aficionados of electronic music shaking their heads in disbelief. He’ll unleash his sonic twirls with fellow beatsmith and Flying Lotus desciple Jeremiah Jae. We promise you’ll find even more to listen to in their music after a decent amount of Purple Haze. Dig deep.

MAAN + Divorce 24 March - 019, Ghent Divorce are young punks from the heart of Scotland who make music like they’re out to rip your heart out and feed it to the dogs of hell. They’re supported by MAAN, a young experimental duo from Ghent whose first release on Smeltkop definitely deserves your attention. The duo will be launching their new album, out via Kraak, on the night.

Mirroring 25 March - Ancienne Belgique, Brussels Like the fingers of two hands intertwined, Jesy Fortino’s electro-acoustic minimal folk as Tiny Vipers and Liz Harris’ electro-acoustic ambient/noise work as Grouper effortlessly and beautifully fit together in the form of Mirroring. 2012’s Foreign Body, their first collaboration, is a seamless fusion of their respective styles - a dreamlike and diaphanous recording suitable as beautiful background music, but dense enough to lend itself to closer and repeated listens.

Wild Nothing 26 March - Trix, Antwerp Two albums in and Wild Nothing are nothing if not dreamy. The soothing mix of twee pop soft guitars melodies, and singer Jack Tatum’s nostalgia on new album Nocturne makes for timeless and upbeat pop songs that sound like a dream come true. It serves as a lovely companion to Beach House’s Bloom.

Legowelt 27 March - Tijuana, Ghent Dutch electronic synth nerd Danny Wolfers’ hybrid of deep house and romantic funk makes the perfect soundtrack to a European horror flick. Experimenting more and more with ghetto sounds and Italian disco, his fusion of every electronic genre imaginable has built him quite a fanbase. Don’t miss this if you know what’s good for you.

Jacco Gardner 29 March - De Kreun, Kortrijk Jacco Gardner weaves harpsichord, strings, flutes and other classical instruments with raw psychedelic effects to produce classicsounding and highly palatable paisley pop. Read more on page 38. Page 45
