The Evolution Issue
Evolve. As living creatures populating a living planet, it’s all we can do. And evolution means different things: green becomes yellow and then red, and then brown. Boys turn into girls who turn into cyborgs, and the music from one street builds on the adjacent one to feed and grow into the sound of the future. Because everything is better than yesterday and inferior to tomorrow – at least according to biological logic. But although evolution is natural, you still have to direct it somehow. You have to open your eyes wider, listen harder, immerse yourself in all the things that will help you beat the odds. Because survival of the fittest is also survival of the finest, dear reader. 03

If you find yourself in Rotterdam before the end of the year, head to the Witte de With museum for some Belgian-grown delights. Brussels-based artist Kasper Bosmans has reinvented past endeavours for his latest exhibition, Decorations: murals, painterly interventions and sculptures embody the preoccupations at the heart of Bosmans’ work – namely, social and ecological issues and the creation of a formalised anthropological vocabulary, this time through interventions on the museum’s archival material. Along with an eponymous publication, which is heavily anchored in the Witte de With’s history, it’s hard to imagine a better way for this enigmatic place to end the year. Raving Iran
— fotomuseum.be
It can be so easy to forget that what some people take for granted can, in other places, cost others their freedom, and even their lives. German filmmaker Susanne Regina Meures illustrates this in her much-lauded documentary, Raving Iran. In it, she follows two uber-talented, extremely passionate techno DJs, Anoosh and Arash, who stage underground parties despite the very real threat of apprehension by the Tehran authorities. Despite the persecution and the death threats, the boys continue to put their lives and freedom at risk in order to pursue their dream – a dream of joy, of euphoria and communion, of losing oneself in the collective experience of live music. A dream all too dangerous for them, but well worth the peril.
FoMu, Antwerp’s own photo museum, apparently gets so overwhelmed with new and exciting works that their own walls are not big enough to represent them. Luckily, they found a platform through their annual magazine, .tiff. Launched in 2012, .tiff showcases some of the most compelling emerging photographers in Belgium, allowing them to present their work in poster format so it can be experienced as (literally) fully as possible. Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m the editor-in-chief of Indiestyle, a website that focuses on new and exciting bands and artists and tries to be an independent and critical voice in the Belgian music scene. We’re aiming to reach people who are constantly searching for new stuff. I’m also still studying, I’m writing a thesis for a master’s in international relations and diplomacy.
What’s your favourite pastime? I’m sorry for the predictable answer but going to a concert is my favourite pastime. It’s an escape from reality, I like that. Any guilty pleasures? I don’t feel ashamed of anything I like. No one should! Actually, I really hate these two words: it’s 2016, your ‘guilty pleasure’ is probably a thousand times more interesting than the next new alternative band.
What inspires you? People inspire me. I’m always glad when my phone battery is empty and I’ve got kind of an excuse to talk to strangers on the train. I feel so stupid for not doing that more often, because it always makes me so so happy.

Mild High Club Jazz Business. Alex Bretting, the man behind psychedelic pop project Mild High Club, has been recording for several years now. Once a solo project, Bretting took a new approach for his sophomore offering by collaborating with his amigos. The result is a jazzy record that invites you to chill. Really. Hard. Skiptracing retains the attitude of Bretting’s debut, but refines the production and takes the music in ever-more mind-expanding directions. To find out more about what goes on inside the mind of a Mild High member, we called him up to discuss the drama of being 15, the state of psych music today and how his approach to listening to music has changed. What was the first song you wrote for the new album? It was ‘Skiptracing’. It was something that I would play on guitar, just a sort of progression that I liked, and then I think ‘Homage’ was something that I was working on, but I hadn’t fully fleshed it out. So I think both of those were around the same time. The rest of the songs came in order. Is that because you knew what the story arc was going to be for the album? Not quite, the narrative came later. But it was more I wanted to connect

Interview the end of one song to the beginning of the next and sort of create a longform piece. That was my initial goal with the first six songs: to create this one big song. Like a movement or something. What made you want to cut it up instead of creating one continuous song? I wanted to basically go through the different areas of what was inspiring me. My inspirations aren’t narrowed down to one specific genre, so I wanted to be able to change the fidelity, song to song, that kind of represented the sounds that I wanted in the best way for each song. So for instance, the difference between the song ‘Carry Me Back’ and ‘Tessellation’ is like the difference between, um… like, the Beach Boys and Steely Dan. Doing it as one song would’ve been a logistical nightmare, because there was a lot more information that went into this album than the first one (I think!). What was Alex like at 15 years old? I thought I could rip jazz guitar, thought I was really gonna be good at jazz. There was this local band I saw play called Blue Funk Infidelity and I really looked up to one of the dudes in the band (the keyboard player). They were kind of like Phish, sort of jam band guys. And that just inspired me to play guitar. ’Cause up until that point I could play the blues, and I sort of listened to music. But it was then that I started to hear awesome harmony, and I just became obsessed with trying to figure it out. And I thought I could be good at guitar. That was me at 15, pretty chill. Do you think the way you listen to music has changed since then? I think going to music school, and doing exercises that force you to analyze what you’re hearing, forces you to create sort of mental techniques. It’s almost unavoidable for me to not analyze or attempt to analyze. What draws me to complex music is I can’t immediately know how to play it or some-

‘I thought I could be good at guitar. That was me at 15, pretty chill’ thing. I can’t immediately sing it back. But it’s still memorable, it’s still able to be something that can play back in your head. Does it take the pleasure out of music a little bit if you’re always analyzing it? No, it doesn’t. Sometimes it does make certain things boring. But it’s not that I can’t appreciate boring. It’s hard to say. I just want a challenge when I’m listening to stuff. Some stuff is too predictable for me. I don’t like to have predictable; I wanna be surprised. It doesn’t take the enjoyment away, but I do like to be surprised. In what way would you say psychedelic music has changed since the ’60s? Technology has allowed it to become such a widespread, multifaceted blanket term for pretty much any sort of music that’s produced today in high-functioning environments. You could call anything from Tame Impala to what Rihanna does to even country music psychedelic. Technology has allowed us to use yesterday’s stuff to the extreme and today’s stuff in ways that we couldn’t do even two or three years ago. It’s all about messing with the mind, I guess. It’s sweet. You could do much more now that you couldn’t back then. It just always seems to come back to using technology to really distort the perception of what you’re hearing. Psychedelic music today is so expansive. It’s almost hard to use that term. It’s like pop. Mild High Club plays Madame Moustache, Brussels on 19 October. The show is free for members.

Elysia Crampton by Boychild 23
Elysia Crampton In the midst of huayños and R&B, cumbia and crunk, the landscape of Elysia Crampton’s music is a mountainous one. Its sheer rolling mass tells numerous tales, from collages of already storied samples to her own South and Central American and indigenous history. At the same time, oscillating between rocky, unstable points of reference, her music is equally mountainous in its formation, as of shifting plates highlighting the temporal nature of our selves. Demon City, released this summer, is a set of collaborative tracks featuring Chino Amobi, Why Be, Rabit and Lexxi. This ‘epic poem’, as she calls it, proves Crampton’s ability to evolve musically by incorporating sounds linked to her indigenous origins and inviting friends to create a more textured and danceable electronic environment.

Tessa Groenewoud Your work seems like you’re questioning the narure of photography and the pictures we make. Am I correct? Yes. Vilém Flusser once wrote people need images to understand and accept reality. They seem to offer us a window through which we see the world, but actually the images stand in between us and that reality. Photographs especially are deceptive, as they are seemingly transparent but in fact they are very artificial.
out as a painter, believing it was the art form to use in order to express an image. Soon it became clear that the medium alone was far too limited, which enabled me to start incorporating various other art forms into my work, like photography. I’m not a photographer, though. I study the medium rather than the outcome, and often focus on how images come into existence and rework and question them rather than adding to the existing body of images out there.
This idea is interesting, especially when you look at images online. I see a world saturated with images, wherein photography has a huge share. Nowadays everyone can make pictures; photography has become an evident part of life. The internet has created a new reality online through its images that comprise of data, information, algorithms… a lot of questions come to mind when thinking about this. Who is considered the maker of these online images? When typing in a word into a search engine, the word evokes a code that generates images made by other people in the past, turning the searcher into the maker of the image as well.
Where does this fascination with images come from? I grew up in a small town in the south of the Netherlands where Catholicism was very present. I was raised a Catholic and we went to church sometimes. I loved the images there; paintings of Jesus and Mary, the relics on the altar... Opposite from our church there was a sober Protestant church in which the depiction of the godly was forbidden. I learned that, for some people, being surrounded by images isn’t as self-evident as we’d like to believe. Already as a child I was fascinated by this dichotomy and I think the idea lingered on. The Illuminatus! Trilogy By Robert Anton Wilson & Robert Shea Some months ago I reviewed Robert Anton Wilson’s personal rendition of a self-help book, Prometheus Rising – which in all fairness should start its own genre (brain-rewiring books? Domesticated ape guides?). Still high from that kick, I decided to tackle his monument of a novel, The Illuminatus! Trilogy. That was back in January, and I’m still about two-thirds through. Yet this book is the kind of trip you want to prolong and ride out as long as you can. It’s not like it makes much sense anyway. Written with Robert Shea, a science-fiction writer worthy of his own cult, Illuminatus! was first published in 1975, starting with The Eye in the Pyramid and quickly succeeded by The Golden Apple and Leviathan. Any version you’ll find today will appear in omnibus edition, which makes it a daunting 800-page challenge to take on. But really: do it! A semi-conventional detective story about a missing persons case goes far beyond any semblance of a coherent plot. Burroughsian narrative devices and golden submarines plunge you into a world of Discordian anarchy, telepathic dolphins, next-level hallucinogens and enough contradicting plots and schemes to make you forget your own name. Treated with enough humour to go a step above the meta, and still managing to touch upon the metaphysical, this book was clearly written to make you question your own sanity and your so-called reality. A work of fiction – but is it really? Or is it just your mind splattering on the pages?

Figures of Dissent: Cinema of Politics / Politics of Cinema by Stoffel Debuysere
How can the relationship between cinema and politics be conceived today? This question was the starting point for Figures of Dissent, an extensive series of discussions, dialogues and screenings organised by Stoffel Debuysere over the course of the last four years. Some of the thoughts and doubts that simmered as a result of these encounters were expressed in the form of letters. This manuscript assembles six of those letters, addressed to fellow filmmakers, artists, producers and theorists. They are six tentative forms of study that blend various impressions, associations and digressions in an attempt to make sense of this conundrum that has been haunting the past century: how does the art of moving shadows pertain to the realities of political struggle? Besides being a driving spirit behind the Courtisane Festival in Ghent, Stoffel Debuysere is a researcher, curator and writer working in the field of cinema and audiovisual arts. All My Life: The Films of Bruce Baillie (L’âge d’or Festival)
Taking its cue from Luis Buñuel’s film, the L’âge d’or Prize was conceived by the founder of the Royal Belgian Film Archive, Jacques Ledoux, to support the production of poetic, subversive and innovative films. In 2014, it became the L’âge d’or Festival and is today, in compliance with the initial objectives, a bold annual film programme aiming to deconstruct and criticise conformism in both cinema and society. This year, this marvellous festival runs from 06 to 11 October at CINEMATEK in Brussels and introduces, among others, the work of the Lebanese artist duo Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige and the work of Peter Gidal, a key figure of the independent cinema and the academia in Great Britain. In 1966 he helped to establish the prolific London Film-makers’ Co-op. In addition the festival focuses on Asian experimental cinema and the avant-garde of the American West Coast of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Check our selection on sabzian.be

Part of this latter programme is a retrospective of the magical work of Bruce Baillie. ‘A poetry in light… an alchemist… a tender anarchist. Bruce Baillie makes me see more colours in the world.’ ‘I was lucky to see his films in 16 mm. This was such a religious experience, almost, because the way he controls the lights and colours is so organic. Later, I found out that he sometimes developed his films himself or that he sent specific instructions to the lab, and that’s so admirable. Especially now that everything is automatic. I would call watching his films “religious” because they are so profound and it’s like watching the wonder of nature.’ (Apichatpong Weerasethakul on Bruce Baillie) The second quote stems from Bjorn Gabriels’ interview with Apichatpong Weerasethakul for Sabzian Image from All My Life (Bruce Baillie, 1966) Sabzian is a collection of online reflections on cinema, and maps cinephile events in Belgium and its surroundings. Esther Johnson is a UK-based artist and filmmaker whose research practice explores documentary portraiture through moving image, audio and photography. POINT AND SHOOT (2006) is a short animation in an ongoing series of formal experiments that take instruction procedures and mechanical apparatus manuals as source material. In Tune In (2006), meanwhile, Johnson explores themes like tradition, folklore and regeneration. Her more recent work, Alone Together, The Social Life of Benches (2015) highlights themes such as the feeling
Comprising over 50 films and videos, the evolving group exhibition STEP UP! presents an exciting selection of Belgian works at the intersection of dance, performance and visual arts from the period 1970-2000. While older contributions from the likes of Jacques-Louis Nyst and Jacques Lennep are of a more conceptual nature, iconic figures such as Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus and Alain Platel bring a breath of fresh air. Having produced for the likes of Fever Ray, Glasser and Blonde Redhead, Swede Peder Mannerfelt has now started releasing music under his own name. In contrast to his previous explorations of house music (as The Subliminal Kid) and ambient (as part of duo Roll the Dice), Mannerfelt’s latest work is characterised by cut-up vocals, looping feedback and abstractly resonating percussion. Featuring on the 2016 roster of the pan-European SHAPE platform, Manner-
Less than a year after they last visited us on their promotional tour for Green Lanes, the Londonbased boys Ultimate Painting are back with a third LP in their bags. decides to become a worthwhile person. While evolving in wondrous sceneries and a series of wholeheartedly simple life events, the teenager asks her greatest idols for advice. Among them: primatologist Jane Goodall, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Kiwi teen pop star Lorde. Through mouthy interventions and innocent spiritual statements taken from her oneway letter exchanges, Maxine figures out for herself how to enact her resolutions.

Allying what makes the genre musically so hypnotising with the groove and offhandedness of his Los Angeles vibes, Mild High Club honours those enjoyably, lazy moments when the mind wanders away in vaporous ways. The solo project of Alex Brettin – one of Mac DeMarco’s tour mates – Mild High Club makes nonchalance and casualness the cornerstones of his compositions. Along with low-key, dreamy and upbeat melodies, the artist reveals an irresistible sensitivity to gracefulness.

Legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa stands the test of time as one of the most influential and visionary filmmakers of the 20th century. His oeuvre is so vast and so plentiful that determining where to begin with a vast filmography comprising over 30 works can be a daunting prospect. If you’re new to his work and would like to dive in, look no further than the 35mm screening of Yojimbo at Cinematek this month. The story of a lone samurai hired by rival families in a small town to do their dirty bidding has influenced countless filmmakers across generations, from Leone to George Lucas. One year after the fall of Ben Ali, Benoît Eugène and Bernard Mulliez started making a traveller’s diary about Tunisia in full transition. There are those who consider the contemporary world to be the biggest invention of mankind. And there are those who think that today everything is reduced to individual existence. In NO43 Filth there are nine people on stage. They have been there since the beginning. The absurdity and the burden of life as predestined and yet totally serendipitous, slowly starts to sink in. Relationships develop that are filled with tension, rage, emptiness and debris created by the human soul. People are pushed into mud and looking up, see nothing but the gleaming eyes of other humans, full of rage.
Aferim! is a must-see black-andwhite beauty about Constandin and his son going through Wallachia (Romania) in search of an escaped slave. En route, they meet all kinds of people with different backgrounds and religions. Although the movie is set in the year 1935, it’s a perfect projection of contemporary society and gives us a lot to think about. Although this all sounds very heavy, Rade Jude tells his story in a fun and quirky way. Check out the trailer and you’ll see what we mean.
