With Olive Juice, her first proper album in years, American singer and synth-manipulator Emily Reo has taken her craft to a new level. Reo constructs deceptive pop songs with unforgettable, complex hooks. On the surface they always appear simple, but the deeper one digs into each tune, the more there is to be found. Her music comes in layers, like she’s trying to cram as many different, complementary melodies into the space of a five-minute track as she can. It’s enchanting. On ‘Blue Canoe’ and ‘Metal’, Reo mines darker territory, finally finding beauty beneath something ugly; ‘Peach’ is cathartic while ‘Coast’ feels positively ecstatic. With so much ground covered, it’s amazing how cohesive the album is, and she gets bonus points for ending the record with a spellbinding cover of Built to Spill’s ‘Car.’ Olive Juice sounds how I imagine people in the ’50s imagined pop music would sound in 2013, and Emily Reo is the forebear of this revisionist dawn. First construct, then deconstruct? Or the other way around? A: Totally construct, then deconstruct, then construct again. I love repetition. B: The deconstructing is the constructing – same thing. Rendering a deliberate intention is the act, whether you’re building or wrecking. A: I’ve been renovating my house and I’m really only qualified to destroy: rip shit up, haul out trash. I like building things for sure, but generally my qualifications keep me on the wrecking crew. Is your process of making music basically the same as when you first started out? Or is this process ever-changing? A: Our process is pretty set in stone – or rather, encased in mud. We’ve developed and evolved in the ease of creating the Robedoor language or whatever, but ultimately the way we make music has changed very little. There’s an initial idea, be that a riff, a beat or some doomy conception. Then we work around it. The goal is to get lost and achieve a brain-dead sort of Zen state where the void just fills in the blanks. How old were you when you started making music? A: I started playing the cello when I was a kiddo – bowl cut,

gapped teeth, the whole thing. I remember being super into the heaviness of the bass and cello section at the orchestra. B: In eighth grade I started making action movies with a camcorder and sometimes there’d be sections where me and my cousins would wear masks and play Casios and Stratocasters. But it was definitely inane and anti-musical. Do you feel making music is a way to release emotions? A: Sure it’s cathartic – and don’t get me wrong, I’m aware of how fucking doomy and evil our jams are. But I’d like to think it’s beyond emotion – or at least specific emotions. It’s not like channelling anger or love or something. I find that kind of specificity fairly silly. Are there other ways to make your load of emotions somewhat lighter? A: You mean like drinking and drugs? Ha-ha. I mean, there are plenty of non-demonic ways to achieve the same sense of loss: sex, eating fruit, being in the desert at night, hanging with dogs. B: Living a life you respect, writing, having soulful, long-lasting relationships with people you’re captivated by. Lying shirtless in the sun, eating your favourite foods. Page 13

‘Human life is vast, you should stumble through as many zones and pursuits as you can’
Is there any stuff in your life that you don’t really need? B: I used to be obsessed with giving away every book after I’d read it, and trading shirts with friends. Just passing things along through the cycle of life, to never hoard anything. But at a certain point you can fall in love and you want to create something slightly lasting. To do that sometimes it means you stay put more than you used to. Then you look up and there’s 500 cassettes stacked in a corner. What part of your life could use some deconstruction? A: I think of deconstructing my life like a vacation or something – it seems like it would be a blessed luxury to unpack all my proverbial boxes, sort shit out, toss some garbage, smash some old hats and then put everything back in order… Shit – I mean – my concept of being human is changing pretty rapidly: owning property, being someone’s life partner, being a boss, I got dogs, cats… Maybe I need to get back to unpacking. Maybe I need to deconstruct my ambiva-
lence to social media and get with the times… Nah. B: While I love running a label [Not Not Fun, BB] and working in music, I’m secretly curious about new worlds that unfold after, or in parallel with it. I want to make a movie or write a book. Human life is vast, you should stumble through as many zones and pursuits as you can. You sound like a very upbeat and relaxed person. B: Thanks! I’m a Libra – always been pretty balanced. You’ve spoken about the level of ‘trickery’ deployed by electronic music artists to make things sound right, because a lot of producers aren’t natural musicians. Do you think clumsiness, awkwardness or a lack of dexterity contribute to musicians being drawn to samplers and synthesizers? Perhaps for some. I enjoy the illusionistic aspect of recording a lot. I think untrained musicians can do interesting things because they require workarounds for their deficiencies – but you still need ears and rhythm to make music; technology won’t fill in the gaps for you. Unless it’s purely procedural music or something specifically devoid of structure – which is cool – but for me, it’s all about writing tunes. You’ve been quoted as saying, ‘I don’t care. Life is short. Nobody’s Mozart… I just play with stuff.’ Yet your music comes across as fairly intricate and laboured over. Were you ever put off by the potentially daunting nature of musical theory or the technological depth of synthesis? Yes to both, but you grow up and deal with the things you don’t understand if you wanna grow. Let’s talk about The Bling Ring. Brian Reitzell asked me to work on it on spec, basically, and the diPage 18
rector liked what we did and it stuck. I was pleased. Under the right circumstances I might consider more soundtrack work. In the press release, R Plus Seven is described as a major departure from your previous work. Are there any overarching conceptual themes? Not really, no. There are some cryptic themes but they are just that – cryptic. And is that going to affect the live show in any way? Yes, it’s been pretty enlightening developing this record for live performance. I’m getting into it. More space, more rhythm, more physicality. A lot of your earlier work is built around Juno-60 arpeggiated sequences, whereas post-Returnal the Roland SP sampler series seemed to dominate in the way you produce… Do you try to change your set-up with every release? I tend to reorient certain things when I’m either feeling bored or too comfortable, but I do feel like there’s a cryptic through-line from album to album and it doesn’t seem too shocking to me, but who knows? Have you been anywhere recently that has made you reconsider your music/the way you make music? Paul McCarthy’s WS show at the Armory in New York definite-

ly got me thinking, but I’m still parsing it out. Did mixing the album in Iceland affect the final result? My engineer knew that room quite well so I felt like we could get what we needed over there. We mostly re-amped stuff and tried to give it some extra dimension of body which we couldn’t quite achieve when working strictly in the box. What do you see yourself doing in ten years? I wish I had an answer. Probably making music on some level, I would

assume. I’m an addict... What one essential thing do you think modern society has lost touch with which we should try to regain? Travelling by sea? I don’t know. Living as an artist in Italy means you have to be completely self-supporting. You’ll never receive help from the government so basically you have three options: live at home with your parents, take a full-time job or become famous. People in Milan are really into alternative music, art and fashion. This is the most active city in Italy, so everyone wants something special, new and cool. It’s also a small city, so there’s a good connection between creative people so you can always keep evolving and gain better knowledge in each medium I’m Jim Cristopher Nedd, one half of Primitive Art. My friends and I are all connected to Hundebiss Records, the DIY label which Simone Trabucchi, aka Dracula Lewis, started here some years ago. He has released artists such as James Ferraro, Jaws, Hype Williams, Sewn Leather, Stargate, Lil Ugly Mane and so on. We all have crazy nights out together, skateboard, watch movies at home and organise insane synth crew jam sessions as CB21. CB21 nights simply mean fun and friend power. When you’re lost in Milan you
should go to Plastic, which basically is a gay club, but a funny and cheesy one. The music style is set to the late ’80s and ’90s. Dude Club is the best if you want to dance on a Friday or Saturday as it offers the best quality dance music in Milan. The PA is awesome and in their smoking area there are big windows looking into a gay Turkish sauna/pool. Q21 is really cool for deep house, techno and sometimes acid house during the winter. The parties there start around midnight and end at ten the next morning. It’s definitely the kind of club that turns you into a metroPage 23

‘During the winter we tend to organise house parties. I used to have a huge flat and every two months we did a big-ass party with a hi-fi sound system six blocks high’ politan zombie. I’ve seen some loco weird shit over there… Go to Magazzini Generali on a Wednesday. It’s full of people from outside the city, basically farmers. Tough, but true Italian style, ‘The Real Guido’s Paradise’. Macao is one of the best places ever, super chill with an easy mood and cheap drinks. It’s an old hotel from the ’50s and ’60s, which has been closed for years. At the moment some students are using it as communal art studio space. It’s also a cool spot for concerts. I’ve played a Hundebiss showcase there with Primitive Art, Jaws, Sewn Leather, Dracula Lewis and Stargate. Buka, on the other hand, was a test hall for vinyl and laser vinyl. An ex-property of CGD records, they have probably the best acoustic setting in Milan. ‘Nagli zone’ is my block where all of us hang out. Pub Agharty looks sad from the outside but every Thursday there’s a great soul and hip hop Page 24
night called ‘Brutto posse’. The place is full of Italian wigga gangstas, and everything gets hot like in Nelly’s video ‘Hot in Herre’. That’s the reason it’s so hard to be alive on Fridays. I also go to Cape Town a lot, a typical city meeting point with good cocktails. I actually prefer the cigarette store just around the corner where you can buy cigarettes and drink a shot at the same time. Nobody knows the real name of the place, but we call it Da Peppuccio (Peppuccio’s), after the name of the owner. He was one of the best jazz drummers from the ’80s and has been collecting music for years, so you never hear the same track twice inside. There’s a golden plate on the wall, stating ‘Never ask about the music you’re listening to’. So I don’t ask him about any track. There’s a creepy and sad atmosphere inside, in addition to a lot of weird types hanging; homeless people, dealers, heroin addicts and lot of ex-punks from vi-

rus milano. A real spot for locals, it makes me feel at home. During the winter we tend to organise house parties. I used to have a huge flat and every two months we did a big-ass party with a hi-fi sound system six blocks high. That was pretty crazy, a club in a house. My friends and I are making music while living in Italy but we’re not just making an Italian thing. I love my country but I prefer the idea of doing something international and then taking it back to Italy.

Throughout history, the state of Texas has steadily set itself up as one the US’s fertile grounds for psychedelic rock, with 1960s 13th Floor Elevators as the precursors. Sixty years later, Houston-based Indian Jewelry reaffirms this trend: stomping pedals as if their lives depended on it, they drown their live performances in druggy, noisy ambiance.
Amen Dunes + Ignatz

Damon McMahon’s first album as Amen Dunes, a druggy and claustrophobic collection originally meant for McMahon’s ears only, was recorded in a cabin after which it was promptly shelved. He then moved to Beijing for a few years and basically stopped making music. In 2009 those early recordings were finally released. Inspired by the positive reception, McMahon returned to the US to form a band. The full-length album that followed, Through Donkey Jaw, built further on the ideas that were already present on his debut, fleshing them out into beautiful, benumbing lo-fi pop songs. His latest LP, Spoiler, contains experiments he recorded over the past few years. Spoiler alert: expect it to fall squarely into the abstract and leftfield camps. Accompanying him this evening is our favourite Belgian bluesman Ignatz, who will open the night with a solo set of his decaying ballads. Page 35

If we tell you, however, that it’s the recording name of Brooklyn-based Daniel Lopatin and that he contributed to Sophia Coppola’s latest film, The Bling Ring, wouldn’t that change the whole dynamic? For the past decade or so, prolific LA duo Robedoor, comprised of Alex Brown and Not Not Fun label head Britt Brown, has been churning out slabs of relentlessly heavy, distorted, bass-driven drone music. While their early work was heavily improvised, over time they’ve charted more song-oriented territories. On their latest album, the ominous and unforgiving Primal Sphere, they march like doomed but determined soldiers across a scorched, post-apocalyptic landscape. Kick off your night with a false sense of hope in the form of Sweden Not Not Fun signee Sand Circles’ woozy cinematic soundscapes, reminiscent of the new Boards of Canada album, as heard from the bottom of a swimming pool. With a sound that evokes the dreamlike natural wonders of their homeland, the music of Chilean duo The Holydrug Couple doesn’t need much explanation. Like their fellow countrymen of Follakzoïd, Ives Sepúlveda and Manuel Parra are Sacred Bones signees and their sophomore album Noctuary a gem of dreamy neo-psychedelia. The Antwerp collective Condor Gruppe will kick off the evening with some groovy instrumentals.

Japanther is a two-piece performance-art/punk-rock project hailing from Brooklyn and led by Ian Vanek and Matt Reilly. These New Yorkers, known for their heavy, hilarious concerts, are always on tour and have been putting out a new album every year since 2001.

One of the few Los Angeles Free Music Society members still active today, the now Portland-based, google-at-your-own-risk experimental group Smegma has been going on DIY noise adventures for over 40 years. For this occasion, they’ve invited Laurent Gérard to join them as they take their evening plunge into the depths of noise. The Frenchman known as Èlg creates hypnotic, cosmic pop wrapped in layers of droning synth and musique concrète. They will share the bill with Dutch experimental guitarist Lukas Simonis and The Homosexuals’ Xentos ‘Fray’ Bentos. Page 39

Music-wise expect live performances by Smeltkop’s Mathieu Serruys, among others, and plenty of DJ sets.

On his latest full-length album, Time-Off, the New York guitar master strayed from his previous solo work to deliver a more songbased version of his American Primitivism-inspired folk music, surrounding himself with a band for the first time.

Antwerp-based punk-pop trio Beach will join the line-up on recommendation of No Age themselves.
