The Neurotic Issue
Summer fades and we stash our banners away. All the promises and potentialities fade as September drags reality to stare you bluntly in the face. And you have to look. These can be stressful, distressing times; the days of escapism are distant memories and feelings of inadequacy and cynicism can no longer be cloaked by shorts and sunscreen. But rather than getting neurotic over your neuroses, why not honour them? Check your distrust. Observe your phobias. Air out your obsessions and leave them to dry. Because if Jung was right, and neuroses can only be resolved through the study of our deepest fantasies, it’s time to take the man out for a drink. Here’s how. 03

With a challenging near-manifesto spanning geology and complex racial dynamics underpinning her latest works, let’s just say Elysia Crampton isn’t short of artistic ambition. But to place focus entirely on the surrounding concept doesn’t do her justice: newly released debut full-length American Drift stands on its own, a mind-blowing, near transcendent masterpiece blending Latin cumbia, Bolivian saya, tribalistic crunk and a healthy dose of DatPiff-worthy mixtape narration. After years of crafting sample-dependent (though no less incredible) sonic mosaics under the E+E moniker, she’s finally come into her own, and we’re reaping the benefits. — soundcloud.com/eande

Devon Halfnight LeFlufy Canadian designer Devon Halfnight LeFlufy is yet another reason why Antwerp remains at the heart of experimental fashion. Having completed his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and trained under Maria Cornejo and Walter Van Beirendonck, LeFlufy is pushing the limits of design – literally beyond tangible reality. Take his S/S17 collection, where he invited artists such as Tom Galle and Alyssa Davis to create virtual landscapes corresponding to the different aesthetic references present in the collection. Like a true pioneer in his field, LeFlufy is well on his way to turning the runway into an immersive and exploratory experience.
Vice called it the future of dance music – if you’re a nerd. And considering the ‘algo’ stands for algorithm, they weren’t far off. Indeed, Algorave is where programming aficionados turn sequences of code into jumpy, bugged-out patches of rhythms and beats that sound like techno being digested and regurgitated by a Commodore 64. Without going into the technical specifics – and please don’t make us – watching an Algorave performance is equal parts mystifying, tantalising and nerve-racking, as performers code club music live, glitches included. Check out notable Algoravers Yuxi, Luuma, and Curious Machine.

So much of the music, art and ideas that fill these pages have undeniable psychedelic undertones. And websites like Sociedelic are great for bringing those latent visions to the surface. Though filled with headlines such as ‘6 facts about psychedelics that will blow your mind’, Sociedelic is filled with little delights that guide you through the colourful, tranceinducing experience of stepping out of so-called reality and journeying inwards. Ulrika Spacek Interview by Mathias Bourgonjon Photos by Cat Stevens, shot in London, UK
Interview With ten feet firmly planted in the psychedelic dimension, London-based Ulrika Spacek are aware that the pleasure of creation can only persist through a constantly spontaneous and humble state of mind. Embodying those intrinsically human and artistic values, we took a bit of singer-guitarist Rhys Edwards’ holiday time in the Balkans to talk about rediscovering music, self-expression and making collages in Berlin. The band is soon hitting the European roads to share debut album The Album Paranoia with an ever-increasing fan base. Anything you’re obsessed with at the moment? What I’ve been listening to today is Tender Buttons by Broadcast. It’s a great band. Quite prematurely, the singer died. They have a run of albums that is a perfect progression and it’s a shame they never made any more. Actually, going on holiday is great sometimes because you think you know an album and, listening to it in a different environment, you hear things that you hadn’t before. I’ve listened to it a lot in the last couple of years, but now I like it twice as much. What drives you most as a human being? Some form of self-expression makes things worth it, I guess. A lot of peo-

Interview ple are great at doing, but they just don’t have the confidence. I really wish more people did it because it’s okay to put something out there that people don’t like. It doesn’t matter. That’s really all I can say. The meaning of life? I wish I had the answer [Chuckles]. The band was formed back when you lived in Berlin, now you guys live in London. What’s your relationship to the city? Berlin is a great city but we were never based there. Everything we did was in London and it has always been good for us. I think we were able to do what we wanted to do there. Of course, fighting against rents and stuff... I do worry that the city is going to lose a lot from that but we’ll see. There are always ways. Do you feel that London is a tougher place for emerging bands? Not really. I think that the sheer amount of people there is great. It’s really easy to get a gig or to put a night on or meet people that may be better at doing something you want to do but can’t do. However, I do think London has a real problem that will be a tipping point when people decide to go somewhere else. We are very fond of Amsterdam and Berlin. London needs to be careful. We would, for example, like to have our own studio but I’m not sure it’s possible in London unless you have a lot of money… Could you name something or someone as being a key influence in your life? From the age of about 12, when you start feeling that you have your own opinions about music, films and stuff like that, it’s just been an amalgamation of what you’ve ever listened to and ever watched. Then, when you’re making a video, it’s easy to feel it’s your idea – but nothing comes out of nowhere. It goes even to the point sometimes where – if I named art-

Ulrika Spacek ists or film directors that influenced us – it would almost be a disservice to them [Laughs]. When you like something in particular, you soak it up and it comes out of you in some way. What’s the story behind the album cover? It’s a perfect example of why Berlin is great. You can just wake up one day and think, Today, I’m going to make a collage. You walk down the street and you find a shop that has old DDR books. This wasn’t made thinking that would be the album cover. It was just one of the things that was made for the sake of making it. That collage was made without overthinking anything or for it to be anything other than it was. I’m really glad it’s the album cover. The structure of the songs is driven by relatively repetitive patterns. Does that come from a lot of jamming during the making process? The songs are quite repetitive, as they’ve been recorded with loops, but it was written as we recorded. What I like about it is that, quite often, what is on the record is something being played for the first time. There are mistakes and there is a great kind of magic in that. There is also something quite idiosyncratic about somebody playing guitar and not really knowing what they’re doing. So, that’s what you meant by ‘self-expression’? Yeah. It’s a beautiful thing for people to do it and not worry about what other people think. I think overthinking kills everything.

Scene Report — Taipei Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! So we feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report. Simon, who plays in Hot & Cold with his Beijing-based brother, moved to Taipei last year and met Jon, an American-born Taiwanese who plays stripped-down evil funk in his band Forests. Together, they let us have a taste of what it’s like to evolve musically in Taiwan’s capital city Taipei is both in the spotlight and completely outside of it. The city’s skyscrapers and palm trees might feature in your mental image of an East Asian metropolis, but Taipei and the rest of Taiwan barely exist on the map. Taiwan has been in limbo since the Chinese Nationalist Party retreated here in 1949 after losing the mainland to the Communists. De-facto independent but politically unrecognised, Taiwan’s identity and future remain in flux. In this weird mix of prosperity and uncertainty there’s an impressive music scene that’s gathered momentum over the past few years. Underground music came to Taipei in the 1980s as Taiwan began to democratize. By the 1990s there was already a noise scene, even. Today the indie scene is well established – though as always, some of the most interesting stuff falls between the cracks. Jon, his Forests bandmates Kuo Hung and Zun Long put together a par-

‘It is the pressure of growing up on a small island, with an uncertain identity, in a society that emphasises etiquette’ ty called noWhere last April. Recording a compilation on an analogue studio console, they took over the rehearsal space Feitou for two nights for the release show, with artists staging installations in side rooms. It got so crowded musicians couldn’t see their bandmates as they played. Along with friends, we help run Lonely God, a label/collective that emerged in that party’s aftermath. You can see the roots of the Lonely God crew in the noWhere’s lineup: Scattered Purgatory (Podiyu) create expansive drones, and their guitarist Lu Jiachi plays modular synthesizers together with Jon in Lu and Du. Prairie WWWW (Luocha Caoyuan in Chinese) mix pounding oceanic noise with delicate folk. EAOW is a fractured synth-pop project led by an American expat. Completing the collective are our friends Qiu Qun, Wang Tuo, Wang Jun and Wang Junhong, who provide art and videos. You’ll often find us at the club Korner – which is actually mid-sized live venue The Wall, reopened (and renamed) after midnight. Recent guests include Abdulla Rashim and Kobosil, while local DJs and producers Initials B.B., Katrina, Xu Xian and Betty Apple are forging their own murky sounds. Tzusing, a producer who lives between here and Shanghai, releases his raw, fun music on labels like L.I.E.S., and DJs everything from minimal synth to ’90s J-pop. There’s definitely a dark current in some of the music coming out of the city, which can be confusing. Taipei is, on many levels, a really pleasant place. Rents are still fairly low. Food is amazing and cheap. Taipei is one of

It is the pressure of growing up on a small island, with an uncertain identity, in a society that emphasises etiquette. So in a place covered in fog and rain for most of the year, there’s a feeling of unease that people are tapping into. Fortunately there are community spaces for unconventional musicians. The apartment-like record store Xian Xing Yi Che is a hub for experimental label Kandala Records. Their tiny basement hosts shows by the likes of Jared Xu, who capped off his recent high-school graduation by releasing a split LP with Merzbow. For gear and repairs we head to the synth store Digilog. Taipei is also full of great projects mining different aesthetic territory, from Kuo Hung’s vaporwave soft rock in Sunset Rollercoaster, to Skip Skip Ben Ben’s fuzzy pop, and atypical rapper Aristophanes. Thanks to its location, the Taipei scene has links to both mainland China and Japan. In May Lonely God organised a raucous party for Tokyo’s Big Love Records crew, including Sapphire Slows. For the second noWhere in June, we invited Kyoto’s Lego Chameleon, a twisted minimalist rock trio, and took over the Essentials Wall until the morning. His dexterity with colour and use of imagery make for structures that are both abstract and familiar, like alien landscapes in acid dreams. Denie Put How would you explain your art to someone seeing it for the first time?
ferent from making paintings in my studio. Getting out of my own comfort zone – my ‘safe’ studio – was scary but at the same time interesting. I was confronted with some difficulties, such as unpredictable weather conditions, curious passersby, my fear of heights and the use of larger tools and a lift.
In my work the painting process, experiment and coincidence are of great importance. I draw and paint on any carrier and try to react to what’s already happening on that carrier. My work can be recognised by rich colours and a varied use of techniques. Influences of modernism, constructivism and futurism are strongly visible in my work. It is neither figurative nor abstract and sometimes almost psychedelic. Its difficult to ascribe it to a specific genre.
What is essential in your work environment? I think it’s important to have my own workplace, with a lot of space and light. Also the social contacts are essential for me (for example, studio visits).
Your art seems to be very subconsciously driven. Do you know what a work will look like before you begin?
We hear you’re somewhat of a big deal in the football world. How’s that going?
I agree that my work is indeed subconsciously driven. Sometimes I start with a little sketch, and I have an idea about how it’s going to look, but the end result never appears to be what I actually intended. That’s why the process is so important.
Very good! After a break of two months the preparations for the new football season have started. I think the difference between the painting world and the football world is very interesting. That difference has a great influence on my work.
Apart from obvious reasons, is a large scale in situ work more intimidating than studio work for you? http://www.basealphagallery.com/ tag/denie-put/

Trip or Squeek By Savage Pencil ‘Oh man! I’m pooped! Workin’ a 9-2-5 inna record shop is a killa! If I ever have to hear one more stroke from The Strokes I’ll have a stroke!’ says a bug-eyed, squiggly blob of a rabbit to his beret-wearing dog/ horse friend as he switches on the TV to watch Keiji Haino overdose on cake. Recurring gags of this order, delivered in demented scribbles, are a proper fit to Savage Pencil’s namesake. Appearing in the Wire since 2002, Trip or Squeek was originally a comic about the musical misadventures of Squeek, Bebop Bunny and Wülf, a trio of out-of-touch music-loving creatures caught in the vortex of their creators’ stream of consciousness cartooning. Encounters with music legends are frequent – Moondog, Lou Reed, Jandek and Genesis P Orridge are on regular rotation – and stereos blowing up to lecture owners about the perils of noise-harsh minimalism and avant metal are merely the usual fare. A throwback to the improvisational spirit of Underground Comix, Trip or Squeek serves as a vessel for poignant commentary about the music industry cleverly disguised as inane ramblings that any music geek will cosign. There’s music award disses alongside tributes to recently departed icons; despair over the decline of record shops and other safe havens for vinyl freaks; real and hypothetical situations involving musicians from all sides of the scope, like Portishead not naming their new album; Sun O))) blasting the audience bunnies to smithereens; Thom Yorke’s neurotic search for a doom alter ego – you get the picture. Or not. The drawings are pretty chaotic. Savagely so.

Having a few gigs lined up over the summer in the UK, these boys are ready to hit Belgian grounds to show you what their newest spin sounds like on the other side of the channel . Think My Bloody Valentine meets Sonic Youth. The shoegaze and krautrock boys will be joined by two Antwerp-based bands, Angels Die Hard, a trio who defines its sound as Psychedelic/Thai/Biker/Surf Rock, and Fake Indians, the noise slackers who will throw you into a headbanging hypnosis. See you at Het Bos on the 2nd.

Free up your weekend, because Democrazy is back at it again with their Big Next event, a two-day festival gathering a bunch of promising bands on the verge of breaking through. On day one, come say hi to Bon Voyage Organisation, the Frenchies who play a sound inspired by world music and Seventies’ hardware. You’ll get to meditate with Exploded View, a project supported by Sacred Bones and led by Anika and her Mexican accomplices. Also on the roster that day: Kikagaku Moyo, Szun Waves, Rhein Sand, Wooly Mammoths, Wwwater and Wanthanee. great value for time. Also invited that night is Mobilegirl, who is running with Stockholm-based label Staycore and said to blow up for her eclectic sets, R&B edits and remixes. Detente and Shift Tides, who have already played and collaborated together, will throw into the mix some grime, hip-hop, ballroom, and ghetto beat. Finally and as usual, Neverland will play some final tunes before you uber it home.
Levitation Room will take you on a psychedelic trip throwing you back to the ’60s. Flower power.

Hailing from the Madrid garagerock scene like their very good buddies Hinds, The Parrots is a trio that was formed in university with a reputation for being stoners and terrible kids. But with debut album Los Niños Sin Miedo (Children Without Fear), which just came out this summer, the band wants to prove that they’ve upped their game and can be taken seriously. Also signed on Burger Records, LA-based The
Imagine you could go live in a 40-storey apartment block that boasts everything you need. No reason to go out any more, ’cause in is where it’s at: great parties, all the cool people and thrills galore on every floor – just take the elevator. Sounds pretty good, right? So it did to us, but then we saw High-Rise and now we know better. The movie’s great, though. Dark, disturbing-but-also-fun-

Lisbon is rising up as the epicentre of the new club sensations that comprise poor kids from the ghettos mixing African and European music styles. Príncipe Discos does a really good job at picking up these DJs (DJ Marfox, Nidia Minaj, DJ Nigga Fox, Niagara), and this month one of their youngest and most promising acts will be travelling to Ghent: 21-year-old DJ Firmeza. Also on the line-up this evening is footwork pioneer (music and street dance that originated in Chicago in the ’80s) RP Boo coming all the way from Chi-City. And rounding off the bill is Hiele, the young master of electronica from Antwerp.
With their third album, Île de rêve, Les Marinellis are ready to take on Europe. These down-toearth guys from Canada aren’t your everyday indie band. The members call themselves ‘tone heads’, meaning they won’t quit searching through different instruments – vintage and new – until they’ve found the perfect ‘colour’. Although their start was more traditional with influences from French pop and rock singers such as Jacques Dutronc, their music has evolved into a mixture of retro garage and surf rock.

Film: Sweet Movie
24 Sep - Cinematek, Brussels 19.30| €4 | Free for members Sweet Movie, by leading Yugoslav Black Wave director Dušan Makavejev, tells the story of two women. Initially intended to tell the story of just one, the movie’s makers were forced to rewrite the whole thing mid-production because Actress #1 was so grossed out by the nastiness in which she was made to participate, that she wanted to jump ship. So Actress #2 was brought in to take the lead in a second storyline that, if not as gross, is definitely as weird as the first. The ’70s, man… Featuring red-hot sex and kinky communism, Sweet Movie is a gross movie. It’s also really cool, and some might say it even spreads a nice message. We do recommend it!
22 Sep - KVS, Brussels 20.30 | €17 | Free for members Actress and director Sachli Gholamalizad is back on stage with a second performance exploring her Iranian roots. This time, through the story of her grandparents and the mundane nightclub they own, Gholamalizad tackles the cultural differences with the Western world with subjects like men vs women, and freedom vs control.

29 Sep - Botanique, Brussels 19.30| €14 | Free for members Raised in the English suburbs, charismatic young Mick Jagger lookalike Oli Burslem started singing and playing the guitar together with his childhood friend Andy Jones, who masters the base. After moving to the big city, where they started writing songs in a basement of a furniture store, this currently London-based duo recruited Kiwi Elliot Rawson on drums, and YAK was born. Their rather recent debut album, Alas Salvation, sounds like solid rock’n’roll, where the manic and raw nature of their performance is truly tangible. All three members are highly skilled on their respective instruments, and that makes Yak a delight to see and a must-watch. Expect passion, explosive energy, distorting guitar and much volume on stage before you find yourself playing their record at home endlessly on repeat.
