Subbacultcha Magazine September 2015
The Team Zine
We’ve been around for more than three years. You come to our shows, you dance at our parties. Our eyes have probably met before, we might have high-fived, exchanged a few words, shared some laughs. We know what you like; you know what we like. And yet. Subbacultcha is an evergrowing family, so we thought the time was ripe for proper introductions. Of course, we’ve let you into our heart already, but now we’re letting you into our houses and our daily lives. So join us on a tour of the team, talking jobs, lazy Sundays and the projects we dream about.

Editor’s note Dear readers, This magazine is one to keep. It contains our treasures, our secrets. In short, it contains the essence of us, the incredible collection of people who make Subbacultcha happen here in Belgium. We’re the proud chaperones of this crazy bunch, and we thought it was about time we shared their insights and inspirations with you, because Subbacultcha has been a heck of a ride for both of us for so long. From starting out in a small room in the Karperstraat to a pretty neat office above the RIOT bookshop in Ghent; from convincing the first organisation to partner up to collaborating with Vooruit, Beursschouwburg, Bijloke, KVS and many more; from doing everything ourselves to becoming a real team that crafts this unique experience every month. None of it would be possible without loads of motivated people to rely on. For us, this is Maarten, who hums along with the music coming through his headphones while writing; Gerlin’s colourful outfits, which always reflect her mood; Bram, who calls us to ask if we’d like him to bring a takeaway coffee (yes! the answer’s always yes!); Lisa, who works seven days a week and is still on top of our social feed; Elise, who was dealing guinea pigs in primary school; Ruud, aka Sheniqua World Tour (say no more); funny and sharp-penned Gabriela – she’s so smart; Femke, who jumps in front of us with a new haircut at Dour festival; Anna, who broke the records of all interns (ever); Juju, yeah man, the best interviewer in Belgium; enthusiastic-to-the-bone Sofie; and Marina, who introduced us to the delicious Japadog in Vancouver. And we don’t have pages enough to mention the rest, so be sure to check out the work of the talented distributors, volunteers, production guys, photographers, writers and partners we didn’t feature. There’s one more thing to say. Join us, become a member and the team will bring you a lot of good stuff to enjoy. We promise. Peace, Kasper-Jan and Herlinde

September Recommendations Each month our staff provides you with a selection of the finer things in life. Enjoy!
Music: Bataille Solaire
Book: A Pattern Language
Christopher Alexander’s 1977 extraordinarily ambitious A Pattern Language is much more than an attempt to develop a theory of design or a planning guide. Through the different ‘patterns’ and with the idea that people should design their own spaces for themselves, the authors address a number of elements, from ‘Sacred Space’ to ‘Secret Place’, to reach the final result: an ideal standard of living. Though this society-changing design manifesto has been criticised as being too utopic or naïve, it is nonetheless an inspiring oeuvre to reconsider our urbanism and architectural notions.
The latest release on Berlin’s Mansions and Millions is from Montreal experimental dynamo Bataille Solaire. With their Dolby’s ON EP, they play with all aspects of electronic music of the last two decades. The frantic insistence of drill ’n’ bass, plunderphonics’ playful sample profanation, glitchy instability, classic IDM percussion and up-to-date vaporwave sonics are melted into an eclectic EP. bataillesolaire.bandcamp.com

September Recommendations Music: Dvtch Norris
stand-up comedy, building a treehouse in the middle of the city, pop-up cinema, parties under a bridge... You name it, #LZSB are making it happen. Spontaneous gatherings on less spontaneous sites, that’s what they’re about. lzsb.be
Support the underdog is what my friends and I always tell each other. Ever had an opening guest getting the crowd more dialled up than the headliner? Well, if I were to recommend someone, I would tell everyone to keep an eye on Dvtch Norris (Fahad Seriki). An upcoming rapper from Antwerp, Norris travels around the world to perform with rappers such as Rejjie snow, Chance, Coely, Method Man and Redman. Without knowing him or his music, seeing him at the Clockwork Indigo concert in Amsterdam was super rad. If you ever get the chance to see this guy perform, take it!
Art: Purple Sun
@purple_sun_brussels is a new tattoo shop in (you guessed it) Brussels, run by Marine Martin, Jean-philippe Burton, Caroline Karenine and Indy Voet. We haven’t visited the new shop yet, but some of us met – and got tattooed by – Marine at their old shop, Deuil Merveilleux. If you’re looking for some supertight lines and truly original flash, we recommend paying this place a visit. If the buzzing of a tattoo machine isn’t your thing, you can also get a handpoked piece by Indy.

September Recommendations Misc: Notanotherbill
Music: Letta Mbulu
Are your trips to the mailbox just a mandatory detour? Are you just getting lame advertisements and reminders to return your books to the library? Notanotherbill might be the answer to your prayers! This online gift subscription service sends you a monthly surprise present to your house. You simply give the name, gender, age and shipping address of the person you want to subscribe for and you’re ready to roll. You can even add categories of gifts you’d like to receive. Not only will your trips to the mailbox be a lot more interesting, you’ll also discover uniquely selected artists and designers.
Long a crate digger’s holy grail, In The Music…The Village Never Ends was lately reissued by Be With Records. The album is filled to the brim with sweetsounding uplifting disco pop, but second track ‘Nomalizo’ is what introduced us to the cult of South-African singer Letta Mbulu. From the spacey synthbell opener to the downtempo claps and the heavenly choral vocals, this is music for your summer garden parties. It’s a bit cheesy sometimes – it’s disco pop, after all – but there’s nothing accompanying whiskey sours can’t fix.

September Recommendations Game: Ennuigi
Art: Dom Sebastian
At first glance, the colourful and sunny universe inhabited by the Super Mario Brothers and their friends may seem like the happiest place on, well… um, cartridge. After all, who doesn’t like bouncing around to that well-known 8-bit calypso beat whilst eating shrooms and collecting coins? As it turns out, Luigi doesn’t… Even worse, it depresses the living shit out of him. Realising that, game designer Josh Millard decided to set the record straight and expose the Mushroom Kingdom as the Goomba-infested hellhole it actually is. In Ennuigi, you take control of an existentially challenged Luigi as he chain smokes his way into an early grave and ponders life’s big questions.
The internet age is a source of inspiration for many contemporary artists, as is the case with Dom Sebastian, an East London jack-of-all-genres creative. He’s a photographer, fashion and graphic designer and musician, with a unique approach to aesthetics. Using everyday objects, a camera and Photoshop, he creates digital-feeling, almost ironic still lifes that are extremely satisfying to look at. The pastel colours evoke a virtual atmosphere, where reality shades into the digital realm. The subtle but omnipresent humour is the icing on the cake.

September Recommendations Art: Ben Venom
Art: Joëlle Dubois
He’s from lovely SF but his art has already travelled all around the world. Having graduated in 2007 from the San Francisco Art Institute and having become adjunct faculty, Ben Venom might become one of the American artists to follow. He likes to juxtapose traditional handmade crafts with what he himself calls ‘extreme elements found in the fringe of society’. Guns, swords, skulls, flags, fighter animals and ’50s pin-ups decorate his quilts, made using oldfashioned sewing techniques. Welcome to the Art Rebel Crafting Club!
After graduating from the illustration and storyboarding course at LUCA, the Ghent-based visual artist has now headed down the track of her master’s in illustration and arts. Similarly to Spanish cartoonist Joan Cornellà, Joëlle Dubois depicts life’s misfortune in satirical hand-drawn compositions, where multifaceted female bodies carry out narcissistic experimentations with technology, sex and social situations. While her pieces convey a relentless resignation and sadness towards life’s nonsense, they are first and foremost a gentle reminder that it is laughable matter above all. An ingenious creative mind.

We Visit You: Herlinde Raeman Photo by Stephen Freeman
What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Mild High Club is pretty okay, but mostly I like listening to old stuff. I’m also waiting on a playlist from a friend, which I expect a lot from, because that’s the way I discover new ‘old’ music. What’s the first record you bought? The first one I like to remember is Nirvana’s Unplugged in New York, but I bought all Radio’s records in my early teens unfortunately. Your first ever music-related memory? My dad always asked us (me, my brother and my sister) to play some of his records during lunch on Sunday. I think I can still sing along to the soundtrack of The Singing Detective. What’s your favourite pastime? Flea markets. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? I would have a lot of coffee and be alone in the morning and have no plans for the rest of the day. Any guilty pleasures? Hmmm, Corona and Maltesers. What makes you dance? Not that many things; DJ New Sensation for sure.
Name: HerlindeRaeman Age: 32 Home: Ghent Zodiac sign:Scorpio
Tell us, what do you do in life? Try to do what I like to do every day. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? A lot :-). I basically run the office together with the freelancers and interns, which varies from doing finances and writing funding files to vacuum cleaning, from listening to music to booking hotels and making travel arrangements for our festival. What are your strengths? I’m an organiser, I like to plan ahead and make lists. I can be very enthusiastic when inspired and I can keep on going. What projects are you working on? The future of Subbacultcha Belgium, our festival, a new Sound Of The Belgian Underground and some new ideas. What inspires you? The Sixties, reading (I always forget that), positive people. What do you like best about your place? The view, I overlook the inner city of Ghent.

We Visit You: Kasper-Jan Raeman Photo by Stephen Freeman
What projects are you working on? Too much, ha-ha. I always have so many ideas and my to-do list is becoming a novel. At the moment I’m thinking of ways we can work together more efficiently as a team, the line-up of our new Sound Of The Belgian Underground festival at AB and a new ‘secret’ project. What inspires you? Everything non-digital. Seriously. I get a lot of inspiration from walking around in the evening, swimming or when I’m sitting on a chair and not doing anything or when I’m listening to the stories of people I look up to. Your first ever music-related memory? My dad playing the soundtrack of The Singing Detective over and over again. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Watching a good movie and eating French fries. What makes you dance? A set of cult DJ Morthen Kiang.
Name: Kasper-Jan Raeman Age: 28 Home: Ghent Zodiac sign: Aries
Tell us, what do you do in life? I work as a community builder for a new digital project created by the Flemish broadcaster, VRT. We try to inspire and connect digital creatives with events and online stories. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? I don’t really have a job title. But I launched Subbacultcha in Belgium at the end of 2011. Since then, I’ve been booking the bands for our shows and festivals. Besides that, I try to inspire our social media whizzkid and our marketing manager. And together with Herlinde I constantly try to innovate our brand. What are your strengths? I don’t have a craft, but I have a lot of ideas and a never-ending drive to realise these ideas. Is knowing a lot of people also a strength? I also believe in up-and-coming artists, I feel this is important. That’s why our Subbacultcha selection, from the magazine to our shows, is holy. Believing in and promoting underrated and unknown creative people is crucial.

We Visit You: Maarten Van Nieuwenhove Photo by Adriaan Hauwaert
What do you like best about your place? It’s old, just like my soul, ha-ha. The big windows, the great view of the sky and ditto sunsets. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Playing the latest Beach House incessantly. Together with a lot of Coltrane, old jazz in general. What’s the first record you bought? The eloquently titled Steptacular by Steps and Westlife’s debut album – #noshame. I carefully selected them from Colruyt’s CD rack. Your first ever music-related memory? This image of my parents and me, seen from a bird’s-eye view, cruising on the highway in our old Volvo, all the way to Spain, Céline Dion stuck on repeat. Have you experienced any regrets recently? Yes. Nowadays it seems like it’s not done to feel regret. No time to hold still for introspection, just rushing on to the new next-level experience. Though I do tend to overthink things, I’m convinced it’s a valuable feeling. What makes you dance? ‘Alane’ by Wes. If that doesn’t get your hips moving, it’s gonna be pretty hard for me to speak to you ever again.
Name: Maarten Van Nieuwenhove Age: 25 Home: Ghent Zodiac sign: Capricorn Websites: maartenvannieuwenhove. tumblr.com degoudvisophetdak.wordpress.com
What do you do at Subbacultcha? I’m the magazine editor. I organise interviews and photo shoots, I coordinate the people that get featured and help out, I check which shows we can co-promote, I write and edit... What are your strengths? Never losing track of the bigger picture, combining that with an eye for detail, good writing skills and perseverance. What projects are you working on? Writing, communications for Theater Malpertuis, The Project of Getting One’s Daily Life Organised. And a lil’ Tshirt line for friends only, stating ‘Simply Faboosh’. What inspires you? Late-night, red wine-infused conversations. And noticing details so small they tend to go unseen, but that strike me with a force that lingers on.

uate our latest collaboration. So now we’re looking for a new project in the fall. Very exciting! I also work for Apex Coffee, a delicious coffee service for entrepreneurs in Brussels. What inspires you? The people around me and my closest friends. Beauty inspires me. Seeing foreign countries and places. Coffee in the morning. What do you like best about your place? The light! Even on a rainy day in autumn there’s plenty of light coming in through the windows. The high walls and the white wooden floor give my place a spacious feeling. Your first ever music-related memory? My parents took me to music festivals when I was just a toddler. I remember camping and dusty dance floors. What’s your favourite pastime? Drinking coffee, probably. What makes you dance? The sun and open-air parties.
Name: Bram Hermans Age: 28 Home: Brussels Zodiac sign: Cancer
Tell us, what do you do in life? When I’m not working for Subbacultcha, you can find me in Brussels. I also try to travel as much as possible. I lived abroad for almost three years and my wanderlust is still very present. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? ‘Sales’ would be the official, fancy word to describe my tasks. But I try to be the middle person for commercial partnerships. Last summer I had some coffees with the friendly people at American Apparel Antwerp. It resulted in a collaboration with a beautiful photoshoot and an instore event: #SUBBAxAA. What are your strengths? In general, I tend to connect easily with people and potential partners. I try to combine the strengths of the creative sector with opportunities in the commercial sector. I would love to collaborate with more fashion brands in the future. What projects are you working on? Last summer I went to visit the American Apparel HQ in Paris to eval-

ing through blog after blog on Tumblr. There’s something about all these individuals feeling like they’re all alone in the world while they’re a member of a social network with hundreds of users who feel the exact same way... #deep. I get a lot out of their ranting and creations. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? I’ve been playing lots of Cleaners From Venus, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and Marine Girls recently. I’ve always preferred old(er) music over contemporary music. Not because I don’t love what’s out there today – I do – but it just seems to resonate with me better. Plus I like to get lost in the WWW and all its hidden corners where people who are just as passionate about music as me share the gems of faded glory they’ve come across. Any guilty pleasures? Bob Ross videos. What makes you dance? A wedding DJ with a midlife crisis stuck in his youth.
Name: Lisa Wallyn Age: 24 Home: Doomkerke Zodiac sign: Leo Website: lisawallyn.be
Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m trying to figure out what I want to do in life. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? Social media and content creation. I’m the one with the terrible sense of humour, who writes awful puns and calls it content copy. What are your strengths? Once I get started, I just keep going. As for Subbacultcha in particular, it’s probably more how much I believe in the concept, the team and the community. Give me pompoms and I’ll cheer. What projects are you working on? Is job hunting considered a project? I have an HDD for grand ideas where I stash concepts, projects tobe and all things considered ‘art’ that could be something, someday. What inspires you? Music (going full-on cliché here). The Beat Generation. Arthur Russell. David Byrne. People in general. I do this thing where I spent hours scroll-

drove four hours in pursuit of the perfect chandelier. What’s the first record you bought? Some weird ’80s fitness LP from the second-hand store. I never even listened to it, I just really liked the sleeve. Your first ever music-related memory? My dad was a big fan of AIR’s Moon Safari. I can vividly remember me and my brother dancing around in pirate pyjamas through the house. What’s your favourite pastime? Working on the house, taking my dog to the beach and I try to travel as much as I can. Nothing makes me happier than driving on Asia’s dusty roads to crash some wedding. Any guilty pleasures? There’s this show on Flemish radio where you can text a psychologist about your personal problems. This woman has the ability to fill half an hour with motivational speeches about how every day should be ‘champagne day’. It’s crazy good. So when I’m in my hometown, me and my friend just like to sit in our car, listening to this woman rambling on.
Name: Elise Dupré Age: 21 Home: Ghent Zodiac Sign: Scorpio Website: elise-dupre.tumblr.com
Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m an illustration student in Ghent, Belgium. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? I’m the membership admin. When I have extra time, I help out with the website and make illustrations when we need them. What are your strengths? I would say that would be my loyalty. I’ve always admired the concept and I’ve learnt so much during my internship, so I’m very happy to be part of this family. What inspires you? Travelling, for sure. Other than that, art history, New York, odd book finds and classic paintings. What do you like best about your place? I’m living here with three of my friends and our two cats. We’ve been patching this place up from the moment we moved in and it’s turning out insanely pretty. We’re all passionate about the decoration part, so this one time we

We Visit You: Gerlin Heestermans Photo by Adriaan Hauwaert
Above all, I’m very positive, energetic and enthusiastic and I like to think I’m fun to be around. What projects are you working on? At this moment just my happiness, as cheesy as that may sound. What inspires you? Awesome girls and women doing awesome stuff – whatever that entails. What do you like best about your place? How homely it is and how much character it has. I’m definitely a homebody and I like collecting (second-hand) treasures, and that shows throughout our whole house. And the fact that my boyfriend lives here with me. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? These artists/albums have been very important to me this year: Rid of Me by PJ Harvey, all Viet Cong everything, Speedy Ortiz’s new album, Twerps’ old stuff and Ultimate Painting. What makes you dance? ‘Alane’ by Wes, always.
Name: Gerlin Heestermans Age: 26 Home: Ghent Zodiac sign: Libra
Tell us, what do you do in life? I work part-time in a vintage store, part-time at Subbacultcha and part-time on my own projects. Last April I organised Zine Happening with my friend Valentine under the name Les VoiZines and it’s the proudest I’ve been of any project I ever worked on. We’re definitely making it an annual thing, so see you next year! And what do you do at Subbacultcha? I take care of the distribution and of our lovely volunteers. I basically do a lot of coordinating, planning and emailing. I started out doing interviews for the magazine and I still really enjoy that too. What are your strengths? I’m definitely a people person. I’m good at organising and planning everything to the very last detail and making sure everyone is happy with what they’re doing. I’ve worked on numerous events and I’m good at keeping my cool and making sure everything runs smoothly whilst resolving problems as they arise.

We Visit You: Ruud Van Moorleghem Photo by Femke Fredrix
What inspires you? Pop culture, drag queens, gabber culture, sausages, big hairy guys, the Eighties, Lindsay Lohan… What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? I’m listing a lot to Aisha Devi and Vaghe Stelle, both from the Dance Noire record label. I’m also obsessed with Latrice Royale and her song ‘Weight’ – OMG, genius! And of course, my guilty pleasure: Calvin Harris <3. What’s the first record you bought? Van a1 van a2, from a children’s programme with Johan Verstreken and a crazy clown. What’s your favourite pastime? Observing people. Any guilty pleasures? Watching reality soaps like Big Brother, I love brainless TV. And as noted before: Calvin Harris! Have you experienced any regrets recently? Some drunk nights at the Gentse Feesten. They didn’t end as I expected. What makes you dance? Everything Topradio plays.
Name: Ruud Van Moorleghem Age: 27 Home: Ghent Zodiac sign: Aquarius Website: ruudrudyvanmoorleghem.be
Tell us, what do you do in life? Beside my part-time dream job as a retail girl ;^), I’m working on my portfolio as a visual artist. With my Bffs Sheniqua World Tour and Tina Sabrina Joyce I just started an art collective, The House Of Ruth. Together we can offer a wide range of different art forms, from collage to music, performance, installation and video works. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? Keep the website up to date, some graphic design, but my favourite part is dancing at the Subbacultcha shows! What are your strengths (job wise)? I’m not so good with words; working with images is more my thing, AESTHETICS! What projects are you working on? Trying to get into an art residency like the Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht or the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. It would be great to learn so much more about your work in such amazing places.

for travelling, aka my life plan for eternal escapism. What inspires you? Right now it’s myths and optical illusions, but generally it’s screw-faced dogs and merguez sausages. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Dead Moon and Nirvana. Exclusively. What’s the first record you bought? I think a Backstreet Boys CD? The one where Nick got fat and I had no one to crush on any more. Your first ever music-related memory? I remember the adult men at our childhood birthday parties would always play a game of passing balloons around between their legs to a merengue song called ‘El Baile del Perrito’ (‘The Doggy Dance’). Not weird at all. What’s your favourite pastime? Googling for spare sailboat parts and trendy insults. Any guilty pleasures? Taking myself seriously and doing pirouettes when nobody’s watching.
Name: Gabriela González Age: 29 Home: Brussels Zodiac sign: Leo Website: stoneagestomp.blogspot.be
Tell us, what do you do in life? I was a part-time slacker up until this year, but now apart from being a bookseller in Brussels I’m doing a few different things, events and such, which are all winding down so I’m looking forward to making new things, more stopmotion videos mainly. But my true calling is getting wasted at Café Central with my bald best friend and the trolls that naturally gravitate towards our sardonically annoying personas. Mark my words, we’ll be making millions with our podcasts someday. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? Book reviews and the accompanying illustrations. What are your strengths? I’m a great at delegating. In fact, I got my bald best friend to write this for me. What projects are you working on? Finally setting up a small studio for all the miscellaneous activities I’ll be carrying out there. And saving money

We Visit You: Sabzian ter being arrested and brought to trial, they pardon him, as it was Sabzian’s love for cinema that drove him to appropriate the filmmaker’s identity. Using the people involved, Kiarostami re-enacts these events, opposing them to the images of Sabzian’s trial. A continuously shifting dialectic ensues: how does cinema relate to our lives? What is real? Is every fiction necessarily a lie? Close-Up is an ode to cinema and to life. It is the cinematic equivalent of staring into one mirror positioned in front of another: each reality is contained within another, as if the spectator were forced to look into a tunnel of continuously shifting truths. Is not Sabzian’s image that of the true cinephile, prying his way into reality through cinema – at times merging completely with the prism that is film?

‘Film is a disease. When it infects your bloodstream, it takes over as the number one hormone; it bosses the enzymes; directs the pineal gland; plays Iago to your psyche. As with heroin, the antidote to film is more film.’ (Frank Capra) Sabzian.be aims to be a cinephile’s guide to Belgium and the surroundings, a platform for writing on cinema. Our team consists of seven active filmmakers reinforced by a growing group of avid cinephiles and film scholars. We’ve been contributing to Subbacultcha with monthly highlights of our hand-picked selection of screenings and events. Our agenda is an often incomplete, yet always personal, guide, shunning material replicated elsewhere in favour of seeking out that which occasionally goes unnoticed. Sabzian takes its name from the main character of the 1990 film CloseUp, by the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. Based upon a peculiar news story, the film follows an unemployed youth from Teheran called Hossein Sabzian, as he convinces a family that he is the well-known filmmaker Makhmalbaf. Af-

nomena such as vast landscapes of untouched nature, odd hidden cultures or extremely talented and influential individuals that come to mind, but also things that are more simple and close to home. For instance, I find it inspiring to study people’s behaviour when they’re unaware they’re being watched. I simply love spotting small and honest daily life gestures. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Lately I’ve been listening to Chelsea Girl by Nico, Ruff Kutz by Spectre and Chaotic-Life-Fin by Jared C Balogh. And a lot of ’80s Berlin-based music and performance band Die Tödliche Doris. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? A good brunch with lots of fruit, then I’ll go for a nice long walk. Afterwards I’ll watch a documentary and I’ll end my day reading a book outside with a blanket wrapped around me, candles burning and some Charles Mingus in the background.

Tell us, what do you do in life? I like to spend my time thinking about ways of visualising my ideas and opinions, thus making them come to life. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? I’m responsible for the style spreads. For each issue, l devise a concept that will suit its corresponding theme. I look for a fitting location, a suitable model and I take care of the styling and the shoot. What are your strengths? My ability to acquire and apply knowledge on the go whilst staying true to my nature. What projects are you working on? I recently moved to Hamburg to study at the HFBK. At this institute I’ll be able to partake in a wide variety of workshops. In turn I’ll be able to apply the techniques gathered from these workshops to experiment with visuals, textile, performance and sound. What inspires you? It’s not only the inspiring phe-

What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? This summer I go from Blaze Kidd to William Onyeabor indiscriminately. What’s the first record you bought? I made my mum buy me two illegal albums by Destiny’s Child and Gorillaz. Your first ever music-related memory? My dad videotaped me dancing to his funk music as if I was at an underground rave when I was, like, three years old. What’s your favourite pastime? I hang out on terraces way too much. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Order food, watch movies on the projector and get stoned. Any guilty pleasures? Is reggaeton a guilty pleasure? I don’t know. Have you experienced any regrets recently? All the white clothes I’ve spoiled in the laundry. What makes you dance? Almost anything. Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? Would love to be there for Lust For Youth.
Name: Anna Baqués Age: 24 Home: Barcelona Zodiac sign: Libra Website: annnnn.tumblr.com
Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m a visual merchandiser at Urban Outfitters in Barcelona. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? I used to work on the online communication when I still lived in Belgium and now I help out with the newsletter. What are your strengths? I’m good at timing and organising stuff, and I also have a pretty solid memory. What projects are you working on? If everything works out I’ll collaborate with an electronic music promoter from Spain and I’m working on a fanzine about the artists from my ghetto hometown. What inspires you? I got a lot of inspiration from everyone I ever worked with at Subbacultcha, it’s such a talent machine! What do you like best about your place? There’s a massive round bathtub that makes me feel like Cleopatra.

What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Over the past two-to-three months I’ve been scoring a few DJ-ing gigs at house parties and vernissages; as a result I’m constantly looking to build playlists that would fit the summer vibes and hot rainy nights we’ve been having. I’m currently covering hazier funk styles like Doug Hream Blunt and tropical synth sounds like Antena. Your first ever music-related memory? Whenever I hear songs like Gainsbourg’s ‘Le Poinçonneur des Lilas’ or Laurent Voulzy’s ‘Le Coeur Grenadine’ it brings me back to some of my oldest memories as a kid when my parents would take us on these camping trips over the summer. They would play these songs on repeat during the road trip. What’s your favourite pastime? Watching people going about their lives. Any guilty pleasures? I like eating handfuls of cashew nuts a little too much. What makes you dance? Three or four Papegaei beers will do it.
Name: Julien Van de Casteele Age: 27 Home: Brussels Zodiac sign: Capricorn Website: pionears.be
Tell us, what do you do in life? I try to make the most of it: hanging out with my friends, laughing as much as possible, eating and drinking, going to concerts, travelling to places. Work-wise, I’m currently a project manager for a company that produces and implements web platforms. Basically, I make sure everything runs smoothly. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? I interview cool kids. What are your strengths? I think I’m very approachable, easy to talk to, and I understand things quickly. What projects are you working on? For about five years now, a friend and I have been running a blog as an outlet to share our musical findings. We want to take it to the next level and make it more professional; we’re buying a domain, improving the interface and looking into organising digitally and physically-related events.

Billie Holiday, reading a good book, latenight talks with my sister at our favourite bar, magazines, Spiderman. What’s the first record you bought? I think it was a CD by Fall Out Boy. I went through an emo-rock phase when I was 13. Your first ever music-related memory? The musical K3 en de 3 biggetjes, to which my sister and I performed our own made-up dances. What’s your favourite pastime? Going out to dinner. Ghent is full of great restaurants so I just have to check them out, right? What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Having cake and coffee with my parents and grandmother. Any guilty pleasures? Dancing in my bathroom to the slutty beats of Nicki Minaj. What makes you dance? Any place with good music and atmosphere. And Nicki Minaj, naturally.

Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m currently in my third year studying communication sciences at Ghent University. I also work for our university magazine, Schamper. It sounds like I’ve got a lot going on – and that’s true – but besides classes and work I basically live like a cat. I love to sleep, go out to eat and crave cuddles every hour. And what do you do at Subbacultcha? Last year, I was one of the online editors. This mainly consists of putting all the events and articles online. This year I won’t be able to do this any more. I’m head of culture at Schamper and this is going to take up a lot of my time. But since I can’t say goodbye to this awesome magazine, I’ll be contributing this year. What are your strengths? Once I’ve engaged myself to something, I truly commit to it. I also enjoy working in a team, especially if it’s also a group of friends like the Subbacultcha Belgium team. What inspires you? Your first ever music-related memory? It would have to be the mixture of my mom teaching me to play the piano, and my dad blasting the Gypsy Kings in the living room. What’s your favourite pastime? Cooking good food with good people, or drinks on a boat. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? If it’s raining, the fool-proof combination is sushi + bed + movies. Any guilty pleasures? I like very baaaaad TV. Have you experienced any regrets recently? I ate at a really shitty restaurant last night. What makes you dance? Dancehall. Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? Discovery Festival on 25 September at NEMO in Amsterdam.

I’m the art director at Subbacultcha NL and I’m also part of the design team for Subbacultcha BE. What projects are you working on? I’m currently busy with Issue 01 of Subbacultcha NL’s new quarterly magazine (coming out in September). I’m also working as the art director for an audiovisual installation project called SonoHologram. What inspires you? Positive people. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? What kind of music are you listening to in the office? Maija: Jimmy Whispers and Juan Wauters stand out as being played a lot. In general though, pretty much everything is thrown in the mix. Tell us about some of the best Subbacultcha moments. Phil: Our recent ten-year anniversary at OT301 comes to mind – so much love all around. Before that, though, Mac DeMarco hanging from De Nieuwe Anita’s rafters and a profusely sweaty Samuel T Herring breaking down to a jam-packed OT. Frankly, we still get giddy every time an artist tells us they had a good time. Any guilty pleasures? Agata: Quick after-lunch trips to a pet store around the corner from the office. They have the obvious standards likes bunnies and guinea pigs, but they’ve also got the cutest kitten and a HUGE ara parrot just hanging out. What makes you dance? Marina: Bass.
Name: Subbacultcha NL Home: Amsterdam Website: subbacultcha.nl
Tell us, what do you do in life? In life we’re writers, designers, artists, musicians, organisers, curators, promoters, dreamers, oddballs, outsiders, whiners, diners and more. But not much more. What makes your team so strong? Loes: The urge to motivate each other to delve deeper into unknown, great music and to never doze off, sit back or relax about it. What projects are you working on? Andreea: We’re planning a big project dedicated to the local music scene in late fall. It’s still very hush-hush, but for this one we’ll need all hands on deck – workshops, sessions, zines; it’s massive! And we’re already working on the second edition of The Wrapping Paper Project, the one where we invite artists to design wrapping paper which we then spread around the city. What inspires you? Keimpe: Tumblr. What do you like best about your office? Agata: Our postman is the nicest guy on earth.

Juan Wauters
PIAS Nites
09 September - Botanique, Brussels 20.00 | €16 | Free for members
11 September - Beursschouwburg, Brussels 19.30 | €13 | Free for members
In 2000, Alberto Wauters left Uruguay to live in a basement in Queens, NY. Two years later he called his son, Juan, to join him. That’s when the magic happened and where Wauters Junior got inspired. Having formerly sung in punkrock group The Beets – with the 2009 debut released by the lovely Captured Tracks – Wauters switched his style to pretty-as-can-be folky guitar strummings, which sounds like time stopped way back when. Finding inspiration in his everyday life, he sings about familiar themes and his beloved neighborhood. Yes, it's no coincidence the cover picture of his splendid second album, Why Me?, was shot on the Queensboro Bridge. Wauters' philosophical ruminations will make you stare pensively into the deep, dark void that is humanity’s shared future.

International record label and independent music promoter Pias makes this ‘nite’ into a natural extension of its own culture. On the bill are the wonky and poetic indie-poppers of Hooton Tennis Club, who combine skewed melodies and oddball narratives - think tales of banal jobs, relationships, memorable parties and passing characters -, making each song a small burst of sunshine to warm the coldest of hearts. Also count on Nashville-bred songstress Torres, who made a space cowboy record, filled to the brim with self-examination of epic spiritual and musical proportions. Plus, holders of the NME Best Lyric award, Happyness. The lyrics in question? ‘I’m wearing Win Butler’s hair/There’s a scalpless singer in a Montreal rock band somewhere.’ Yep!

16 September: Zebra Katz
Zebra Katz + The Lizzies
Working with quality label Big Next, Democrazy presents bands on the verge of making a breakthrough, which are well-deserving of the attention. Case in point: in the past, Kurt Vile and Future Islands – among others – have graced us with their presence. This year, Big Next Festival is up for its second edition, and the line-up looks set to maintain the standard: expect the dancing ambient of Vuurwerk, the psychedelic shoegazers of Man of Moon, the sweetsour folk-pop of Hero Fisher, the neoAfrican funky beats of Témé Tan and much more. Subbacultcha members get 50% discount and pay €10 instead of €20 at the counter.
16 September - Madame Moustache, Brussels 20.00 | €10 | Free for members Fervent representative of the queer hiphop movement Zebra Katz is the project of Ojay Morgan, a 25-year-old multidisciplinary American who’s quickly demonstrated a blunt and driven creative process as part of his conceptual approach to art. His latest release, Nu Renegade – a collaboration with alienated Londonbased producer Leila – is the perfect combination of the rapper's voluptuously evil baritone and luxurious mesmeric electronics. A devilishly glamorous evening!

19 September - Vooruit, Ghent 20.00 | €16 | Free for members
20 September - Het Bos, Antwerpen 20.00 | €10 | Free for members
Vooruit is kicking off the season in the best way possible. King Midas Sound, the dub-slash-ambient project of UK producer Kevin Martin, teams up with Fennesz, the guitar drone god you know all too well. It’s a unique collab that makes for bass-heavy ambient, with a poppy vibe. Free-floater Cameron Stallones treats you to the retro-futuristic psychedelica you like best, neo-kraut filled to the brim with funk, dub and ethnotrance influences. Count on Maurice Louca for a complex, unique and absolutely visionary version of Arabic music, as his album Salute The Parrot proves. Limited capacity though: only the first 30 Subbacultcha members get in for free. First come, first served.
He used to be part of the bands Woods and The Babies, but with his solo debut, Harlem River, Kevin Morby released one of the most popular albums of 2013. With Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Neil Young as his influences, Morby opts for soft strumming on an acoustic guitar, some organs and polished electric guitars, reminding of Real Estate and Kurt Vile. Last year’s follow-up LP, Still Life, was another gem of easy-going guitar melodies. The beginning of this month sees the release of his seven-inch, Moonshiner/Bridge to Gaia. And just a few days later, you get the chance to hear it live. You’re welcome – we know you love him as much as all the girls (and boys) at our office!

Destruction Unit 23 September - La Zone (JauneOrange), Liège 20.00 | €8 | Free for members
26 September - 019, Ghent 20.00 | €10 | Free for members
American outfit Destruction Unit, the brainchild of Ryan Rousseau, can be described best as a psychedelic noise-punk band. And a word of warning: they do have a reputation for terrorising crowds with noise power and reckless behaviour. Midway through the month, Sacred Bones releases their new LP, Negative Feedback Resistor, and that’s what you’ll be treated to tonight: a musical vaccine against everything that’s ruined on our planet. You’ll be glad to hear members of Dirty Beaches, Lust for Youth and Hoax, among others, leant a hand to deliver Destruction Unit’s new baby.
Lust for Youth is Hannes Norvide's dark, lo-fi one-man-band-cum-trio. The release of fourth LP International marked a clear switch: the lo-fi nature of Norrvide’s solo output made room for a more amplified sound; the grimness that evokes Swedish winters was traded in for a poppier vibe. Together with long-time live collaborator Loke Rahbek and Malthe Fisher, who produces and plays guitar, Norvide has created a buoyant synth masterpiece in the vein of early Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys and New Order.

Party: Kassem Mosse + XDB + Elmer
03 October - La Bodega, Brussels 23.00 | €10 | Free for members
Film: Eau Zoo
The first new-season edition of Deep In House sees a new venue: La Bodega, an old sugar factory-turned-event complex. They bring you Kassem Mosse live with XDB, who both come from Germany. Gunnar Wendel, aka Kassem Mosse, is certainly one of the most remarkable producers of the past 15 years thanks to releases on Workshop Records, FXHE, NonPlus and The Trilogy Tapes. Think misty, heady and inimitable sounds. XDB launched his Metrolux label in 2006, and presents music that ranges from deep and soulful house to raw, analoguesounding dub techno. They will be joined by Elmer live, aka Sagat & Walrus live, aka two thirds of the mighty Bepotel. Not to be missed!
Film: Eau Zoo
02 October - Cinema Zuid, Antwerp 18.00 | €5 | Free for members Emilie Verhamme is a promising young director. After two short movies, 2011’s Cockaigne and Tjernobyl Hearts (2013), her first full-length, Eau Zoo, was screened at several movie festivals. Lou and Martin are two adolescents living on an island with their overprotective parents – and trying to escape. The movie develops like a private session choking on landscapes beaten by the wind, vast and arid. It flirts with a certain anticipation cinema, proves to be a Shakespearean drama and becomes a captivating and peculiar tale.

Agenda. September On the following pages you’ll find a selection of concerts, festivals and exhibitions taking place during September Lecture: Relaas 01 September - DOK, Ghent An unbelievably charming concept, lecture series Relaas aims to deliver true, heartfelt stories told by the people who experienced them straight to your listening ears. The tales to be told at DOK are still a secret, but it’s a risk we think’s well worth taking.
corner, this year looks set to maintain that standard. Art: Especes d’espaces 12 September-04 October Croxhapox, Ghent Exciting underground art venue Croxhapox presents works by Adrien Tirtiaux, Annelien Vermeir, Bart Prinsen, Erik Nerinckx, Koyuki Kazahaya and Lore Smolders.
Music: Experimental Music Record Fair 05 September - Rue de l'Église StPierre, Brussels The Snakes on a Plane of event names – although you can also expect books and zines, plus some performances. Expect independent labels and second-hand stuff covering genres as diverse as Japanoise, field recording, music concrète and EBM.
Art: Artist Print IV 11-13 September - Le Brass, Brussels For those who can’t resist the smell of fresh ink or who like to run their fingertips over high-quality paper, Artist Print IV is like catnip. The exposition this year features works by Keymouse, El Topo and (sic).
Festival: HORST 11-12 September - Horst, Holsbeek Dating back to the fifteenth century, Horst is a beautiful castle hidden in the green valley of the Hageland hills. Throughout the past, it has been a constant backdrop for festivities and aristocratic events. Now, the electronic music festival Horst also serves up art on the side. The quality of the selection was high on both fronts for last year’s debut, and with Lapalux, Innershades and YellowStraps in the music
Festival: Incubate 14-20 September - various locations, Tilburg At some point in its early iteration called ZXZW, Tilburg’s Incubate festival has more than just a former moniker in common with its Texan peer: the sheer volume of performing artists is equally staggering. This year it includes Cabaret Voltaire, Hookworms and Girl Band, among many others.
