intro
20-something peers Nobody is born in a vacuum. The things we see, the choices we make and, above all, the people we meet shape and inspire us in ways too often not registered. But take a moment to recall the skip of your heartbeat when you heard that song that changed your life, the movie sequence that haunted your dreams, the single brushstroke that moved you to the point of disquiet. The tracks left by others are unconsciously followed and the people around you subtly but meticulously curated. This is how you honour your peers: by acknowledging them with a sly nod, by nonchalantly counting yourself among them. 5

Rockerill Festival 2018
There are always artists that seem to blend contrasting textures in such a captivating way, it forces you to question your carefully constructed categories. Slightly uncomfortable and dangerous stuff, but apparently necessary for inner growth or something like that. One of those artists daring you to expand your palate is the Berlin-based Hermione Frank, aka rRoxymore. The left-field techno producer knows how to put you into a groovy, organic state of confusion while the world as you know it slowly melts away. She will be joined by Catclub resident Diego Cozzi, aka Fais Le Beau.
ft. An Albatross + MOAR + Cannibale + Assassani + Techno Thriller + more 2 June – Rockerill, Charleroi 18.00 – €20 – free for members Rockerill Festival is back, bringing punk, rock, psychedelic and garage music as well as acid techno to Charleroi. This festival attracts the crème de la crème of the Belgian and French hardcore scenes, with power-scream-pop-disconoise from An Albatross and Cannibale’s exotic garage rock, plus garage-synthpunk by The Scaners, and Moar, who will surprise you with their playful and funky garage punk. Acid techno acts such as Assassani and Techno Thriller will make your heart pound and your head spin afterwards.

For the latest edition of this ambitious festival dedicated to experimentation and the underground, Subbacultcha is hosting a stage on the second day. TOPS’ dreamy indie vibe and First Hate’s bright synthetic pop tunes will transfer you from deSingel to a colourful party in an abandoned building in Berlin with a view of the setting sun. and Anna Konjetzky will colour the stage. It’s an event that deserves to go out with a bang, so the festival will close with some pumping beats by Hard Ton and local DJs, where everyone will show off their most sultry dance moves. To make it even more special, there’ll be a performance by Queen of Antwerp nightlife, Gabrielle Duchesse Divine. With a theme as promising as ‘Trash is the new Chique’, it’ll be a dark and raunchy night.
Crows + Crowd of Chairs
Jozef van Wissem
9 June – In de Ruimte (Purple Panda), Ghent – 20.00 – €10 – free for members Purple Panda is hosting an ear-splitting evening for all post-punk fans out there. London noise-psych- post punk band Crows combines noise with Editors and UNKLE-like melodies, making the whole a quite balanced and calculated chaos. They play together with Crowd of Chairs, a young band with members of Deer and Youff and a sound reminding us of one of the many Liars personalities lying in a rusty sofa with Girl Band listening to a Hypochristmutreefuzz record in the background.
13 June – Le Vecteur, Charleroi 19.00 – €7 – free for members Set in heavy and hypnotic darkness, Jozef van Wissem’s compositions take you on a mysterious voyage. With a minimalistic approach, the Brooklyn-based musician lures your mind away while playing his lute with blissful passion and precision. Besides his enchanting solo work he has collaborated with figures such as Jim Jarmusch, releasing several works on Sacred Bones and Important Records. Van Back in 2013 Van Wissem won the Cannes Soundtrack Award, after soundtracking arguably the coolest vampire couple out there with his hypnotic atmospheres in Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive. Apparently Bella and Edward are still trying to get a hold of him. Oh, and let’s not forget about his contribution to the Sims. He does it all!
Strangelove Party 9 June – Het Bos, Antwerp 23.00 – €10 – free for members Strangelove, the queer arts festival, is back with their three-day celebration of the misfits, rejects and outcasts. Artists like Bruce LaBruce, Mavi Veloso

Powder + Nosedrip + Cleveland 15 June – C12, Brussels 23.00 – €10 free for members until 01.00 Powder, aka Moko Shibata, embodies day/night dichotomy: during the day she works a boring nine-to-five job; at night she locks herself in her mini studio ‘to exorcise her daily demons’. Her sound ranges from house to tropical to techno, with unusual samples and heavily manipulated vocals. Nosedrip plays everything from post-punk to new-wave to psych, with an occult aesthetic vibe surrounding his enchanting sets. Cleveland, a Brussels-based producer with Italian roots, fits right in with synthy house that makes you drift off into a cotton trip.
Steffi + Chris Ferreira + Gurl 16 June – C12, Brussels 23.00 – €10 free for members until 01.00 Coming to Brussels is longtime Berghain / Panorama Bar resident Steffi. As a producer the Dutch born artist is ever progressing, releasing solid productions hovering between classic
house and contemporary techno on labels such as the infamous Ostgut Ton and her own Klakson and Dolly imprint. In her DJ sets, she skillfully presents her love for underground dance music while effortlessly adapting herself to every room. She will be joined by the Brussels-based DJ, sound engineer and all-round music head Chris Ferreira and Gurl to keep C12 burning all nite long.
Klub Dramatik Festival ft. Antal + Stellar Om Source + DJ Okapi + more 16 June – Nachtegalenpark, Antwerp 12.00 – €30 50% discount for members at the door After last year’s success Klub Dramatik has decided to come back to Antwerp’s finest open-air venue to host their version of a spring garden party. It’s set just outside the busy centre of Antwerp in the green oasis of Nachtegalenpark. Expect exciting stages (think velvet), light shows and funky music that’ll make you dance all night. The line-up has some well-established artists of the electronic music scene, like Antal and Young Marco but also some fresh new finds. As the name might tell you, Klub Dramatik promises you a fun and crazy dance experience, which pleases visual and auditory senses.

What is going on — the song ‘Bilaber’ by Otim Alpha (Uganda) has been stuck in our heads for months. Expect some hyperkinetic dancing and tribal chants, aka some top-notch electro acholi. The other live act — also part of the rad Nyege Nyege Tapes label — is the Tanzanian Sounds of Sisso, an intriguing and intelligent electronic outfit with influences of Tarab, South African House and gabber. A night for fans of Ata Kak and Nozinja.

Pictureplan, aka Travis Egedy, is a visual artist, a streetwear clothing designer and an electronic producer. The multidisciplinary artist’s music is deeply marked by the ’90s, with touches of hip-house, drum and bass, trance and a rave feel inspired by the DIY punk and noise scene. The Brooklyn-based producer made his name chasing unpopular realities and alternate truth across various media and will share the stage with Perron Zes, a Brussels-based collective of DJs and visual artists who not only host events and exhibitions, but also design clothes and run their own radio show. A match made in heaven.

29 June –Table Dance, Antwerp 21.00 – €5 – free for members DJ Charme FKA Kasset, aka one half of Coco Haram, aka THE Belgian soundcloud hero, aka best moniker ever, is throwing a big party at Hiele’s brand new Table Dance venue in Antwerp. His new record brings out the best in him: bizarre dancefloor fillers, gorgeous ambient textures, far-out instrumentals and some demented Dutch vocals. Radiance 29 June – Cinema Zuid, Antwerp 18.00 – €5 – free for members Misako loves to chase the sunlight ‘all the way until it sinks’. As darkness slowly but inexorably closes in on him, Nakamori mourns its loss. Misako works for White Light, a company that provides movie audio descriptions for visually-impaired people. During a test screening, she meets Nakamori, a blunt photographer coping with his deteriorating sight. How to watch, how to notice, how to communicate without being too intrusive or too vague? How to convey the meaning, beauty, poetry of life with only words? Radiance offers a diaphanous meditation on finding light through obscurity.
until 15 July – Argos, Brussels 10.00-18.00 – €6 – free for members Laurent Van Lancker is a multilingual Brussels-based artist. He studied both filmmaking and anthropology, a combination that echoes through his work, which addresses the illumination of social, religious and artistic aspects of different cultures and the tension between ethics and aesthetics. The solo exhibition Disorientation(s) departs from the multiscreen installation Limbo, which evokes the feeling of disorientation and the eternal stream of migrants in an abandoned refugee camp. Van Lancker’s other recent works will be displayed as well, creating an electrifying and fascinating image of his oeuvre that deserves to become widely known.

During the exposition, we’ll get to see a reassessment of the current modernity and how those spaces are the mirror of modern violence.

14 June - 12 Aug – Botanique, Brussels 12.00-10.00 – €5,5 – free for members Yep, it’s an expo at Botanique. For the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia of 1968, Botanique brings to you this summer one of the living legends of contemporary photography: Josef Koudelka. His black prints, his rigorous framing and his sharp eye have made him one of the indisputable fathers of humanist photography. His work on the invasion of Prague in 1968 is the most journalistic one of his career.

16 June - 2 Sept – BPS22, Charleroi 10.00-18.00 – €6 – free for members Gabriel Belgeonne is known for his multidisciplinary talent. Painter, engraver (etching, wood, lithography), glass artist, his steady artwork is discreet yet robust. BSP22 paints a sort of retrospective of 50 years of work, almost 70 pieces of art, where abstract lyricism meets measured chaos. The Belgian artist will be celebrated for his undeniable talent and his capacity to bring the beautiful out of the elusive.

Blu Samu ‘I like pears, not peers’
Fresh and young, Salomé Dos Santos (23) is a talented MC on the rise. Hip hop isn’t just a boy’s game and Salomé has certainly proved that, with beats and lyrics that are as pure and real as her energy. Already a staple in the Brussels scene alongside her homies from Le77 and STIKSTOF, her crew is not only important as part of her daily life but also in terms of her development as an artist. Originally from Portugal and often referring to a sad period in her life where she longed to return to her home country, she took her name from that feeling of blueness. You may have seen her perform at Couleur Café or Dour; undoubtedly, this girl is exploding beyond the scene, in all shades of ‘blu’ imaginable. Photo by 5amuraij 23 Catherine Lemblé

Ode de Kort ‘I become U become I, as U walk, as U walks, I I’
Embodying her art in ways both playful and carefully studied, Ode de Kort (25) is a photography graduate currently undertaking a PhD project at Hasselt University. Mixing photos, sculptural installations, videos and performances, her current focus (in her words) ‘draws from corporeal experiences, permitting notions of play and language to synchronise’. Current obsessions are the shapes O and U, the performative aspects of work and linguistic formulations, and the esoteric concepts of ‘table-thinking’ and ‘readingUreading’. If none of this makes sense, that’s okay too: Ode’s art is herself, her trip, and she’s a more than a willing guide to take you through it. Photo by odedekort 25 Catherine Lemblé

Mathilde Timmerman ‘When I’m outside and I enjoy the world, that’s what influences me a lot’
You might remember Mathilde Timmerman (20) from ‘Little Burden’, one of our past style features. When she’s not frowning at the camera while carrying a heavy-looking bag, Timmerman spends the majority of her time designing theatrical costumes and performances. Her latest highlight is ‘Generation Fear of Commitment’, a piece inspired by some of Kafka’s short stories and playing with the singularity of experiencing something in a specific time and place with a specific crowd. The idea is to create a sense of togetherness with the audience. Ultimately, Timmerman hopes her work becomes an eye-opener on the potential versatile power of theatrical costumes. Astrid De Sterck ‘I believe you learn the most from seeing a lot of different things in a lot of different places’
For a year now, Astrid De Sterck (23) has been music programmer at Ancienne Belgique. She listens carefully and searches for potential in music and bands, trying to respond to the demands of the city. Located in Brussels, she calls it a complicated and beautiful city where the complexity of the everyday problems of the city are reflected in the cultural events. With a new project coming up called ‘Braindance’, Astrid wants to focus more on electronic music at Ancienne Belgique. The name is obvious and clear: she wants to make your brain dance like never before. With a lack of venues nowadays in Brussels, she’s willing to try and create new opportunities at Ancienne Belgique for the younger generations, as demonstrated in April when the Toestand organisation was allowed to take over AB as a sign of protest. Photo by astrid.desterck 29 Jill Verhaeghe
Chloé & Ine ‘We always work intensely together with people with different backgrounds and different visions. We learn a lot through these projects and in some cases we need to redefine our view on things’
Coucou! Chloé (26) and Ine (29) here. Together, they have a catalogue of projects going from being the designer of Subba magazine issue (yep, that’s one face down on your Subba people checklist), to a book called Umwelten in Art and Architecture published by the Grafische Cel, to Toestand’s graphical identity, to a website for Estate Philippe Vandenberg, and to the poster for the next Different Class festival. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The thing you need to remember is how they’re going about their work: by collaborating together with their stakeholders. Each new project that presents itself is taken as a way of challenging their current beliefs, valuing and respecting people’s different areas of expertise to reach a common goal. We’ll leave you with that. Photo by chloedhauwe & ine.meganck 30 Tiny Geeroms

DTM Funk ‘Every connection with another artist offers the opportunity to learn something new. The further they stand from your preferred genres, the greater the opportunity to learn’
If you listen to our monthly show on The Word Radio, you’ve most likely let yourself slide into the following set of DTM Funk (28) spinning his latest vinyl finds. The musical world of the Antwerp-based promoter is vast, ranging from hip hop, boogie, juke and Afrobeatz to some hardcore Detroit electro. Yes, the Funk boy is busy: when he’s not head down in vinyl crates, he organises parties such as Park Festival, an urban electronic music festival dedicated to Antwerp’s youth, and Feest met ijsjes down at Het Bos during the summer. Despite his manic schedule, DTM Funk embraces social interactions, taking every new one as an opportunity to learn something new. Photo by dtm_funk 32 Tiny Geeroms

Fabian Verbeke
‘I’ve learnt to never limit myself. If I feel like there’s an opportunity I will always go for it’ Fabian Verbeke (20) is a trailblazer. Take a look at his Instagram and you’ll get the deal. The man is a Pandora’s Box of ideas. Ambitious, limitless, strong-minded and flawless are a few of the flattering adjectives we could label him with. He’s the full circle: a stylist, a designer and even a photographer when he decides to hit the selfie stick. He’s currently developing these skills with a degree in photography, designing graphics and creating his own unisex clothing line, ‘evil live2k’. He also recently started organising parties with his friends. And speaking of friends, Verbeke lives by his crew: by having common interests and mindsets the guys support and inspire each other. Jana Antonissen ‘Better to make a fool out of yourself than regret something you never did. If I had to choose, I’d prefer a little drama over being beige’ Jana Antonissen (25) likes to write — about everything that matters, and everything that doesn’t. She’s a freelance journalist for De Morgen and Humo, and writes occasional short stories for Oogst Magazine and Hard Hoofd. Currently living in Berlin, you could call Antonissen a very curious girl — maybe sometimes a little too curious. Being a journalist, she has the perfect excuse for meddling in other people’s affairs or getting in trouble, and she’ll do everything for a good story afterwards. She’s also working on a project about Kyiv’s creative scene five years after Euromaidan, the Ukrainian Revolution. That’s partly why she started studying Russian and Eastern European Studies in Berlin. Antonissen thrives in different environments where she can find a new social entourage. And that entourage is very important to her: she needs people around that inspire and challenge her, both on a personal and professional level. Photo by jntnssn 36 Jan Omer Fack

Lait de Coco ‘Most of the time peers are positive, because they give you a lot of advice but as they tend to influence you it can also bring a negative vibe for some reason and then you’ve got to work harder to stay focused on what you’re doing’
Lait de Coco is a DJ collective and growing music label based in Liège. And yes, they’re as sweet as they sound! The collective consists of four members: Mimi, LaBok, Milo and JeuneClyde. Lait de Coco was born in 2015, but they’ve only been active over the last year when they started their monthly parties, LDC Nights at KulturA. The guys are specialised in electronic club music, taking musical influences from the UK/US/African music scenes with a twist of hip hop. They try to blend all kinds of genres and tempos in order to guide their audience through the diversity of club music. They’ve had the chance to share the decks with artists like King Doudou, Berlin Disaster, Club Late Music and GoldSaucer. Currently the Lait de Coco crew has a very busy schedule: they’re ending their first season at KulturA, working on LaBok’s first EP and almost playing at Supervue! Collaboration and making connections with other crews are very important for them in order to grow and move forward. Photo by laitdecocomusic 39 Yaqine Hamzaoui
Lindsi Dendauw ‘Not giving a fuck opens up your calendar a lot’ The rock’n’roll world still looks like a dick fest and that’s what Lindsi Dendauw (26), a loud and proud feminist, is trying to change. She created the collective called Girls Go Boom with a couple of friends where they fight the sexism that’s rampant in the industry. They have a clear mission statement: girls putting girls on stage. Creating a space where female performers feel inspired and don’t have to apologise for what they stand for in a typically male music scene. Girls Go Boom focuses mostly on promoting noise, garage and punk bands, but everyone’s welcome. Dendauw is all about the ‘fuck you’ attitude and pissing off men on the internet. She has a lot of things coming up, like a month-long residency with the Girls Go Boom at Plek, and she recently started her own band called Kuthumeur. Together with her like-minded Scooby gang, Dendauw is here to change the typical cliché of the all-male rock parties where only guys are allowed in the mosh pit. Girls to the front! Lisa Vlaemminck ‘I think people have to know your work before they get to know your face — and not the other way around’
Lisa Vlaemminck (25) is a painter based in Brussels. Her atelier overlooks the Botanical Garden, which can easily be seen as a source of inspiration in her work. Vlaemminck works with a lot of organic forms and unconventional colours resulting in bizarre yet attractive scenes. She’s now represented by galerie Tatjana Pieters where she’s working on an exhibition of collages called ‘Paper Works’. Additionally, Vlaemminck’s work features in another exhibition at the gallery together with Mike Pratt. If you’ve been to the Hugo Claus ‘Con Amore’ exhibition you might recognise her work; her painting ‘zoetwatervis/ aquarythmics #2’ is hanging there. With some really good things going on at the moment Vlaemminck prefers to stay out of the public eye, she doesn’t believe in showing up frequently at vernissages or having a lot of social media presence. A little hidden gem! Photo by lisavlaemminck 43 Eva Teetaert

Matthijs Spittel ‘The youth evolve themselves all the time, create new trends, they teach you the most. They determine the future’
You may know Matthijs Spittel (26) as the father and founder of Violencia, an Antwerp-based organisation that encourages and supports young talented people in the urban and hip hop scene. Quite a lot of them experience difficulties in their lives and still have one foot in a bad environment. Spittel wants them out completely, and helps facilitate it by giving them a platform where they can fully express themselves and trying to bring them to a higher level within the music industry. But it’s more than that: everyone who’s a young creative with a clear vision and ideas is welcome at Violencia. They provide sustainable artistic support for everyone who needs it. Together with his Violencia family, Spittel will host a stage at Swim With the Current at deSingel in Antwerp, where you’ll get to know all of their talented artists. Melat Nigussie ‘As long as my beliefs are solid, I can resist the temptation to conform’ Melat Nigussie (26) is an impressively sobering figure. Raised in an auspicious environment — her parents were both teachers in Ethiopia — her eagerness to learn and grow is the trait that has most defined her. As project coordinator of the project Next Generation, Please! at the Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR), her focus is on bringing people, artists and politicians together to move the European narrative forward through art. She is also one of the authors of Zwart, an anthology of Afropean writers from the lowlands, as well as the co-founder of the Afro-centric publishing platform Market FiftyFour; indeed, her preoccupations with decolonisation and issues faced by the African diaspora make hers not just an interesting voice to hear, but a timely and important one above all else. Nigussie wanted to be featured with Jadon, with whom she hosts the podcast ‘Grand Fresh’, because she truly believes in the power of peers, and believes we’re all in this together. Mika Oki ‘It’s always difficult to resist conforming to those around you but every form of creation is in perpetual movement and evolution. You just need to be clear and feel comfortable with that’
Unless you’ve been living under an extremely heavy and soundproof rock, chances are you’ve tuned into one of The Word magazine’s eclectic and myriad online radio programmes. Musician, visual artist and all-round cool gal Mika Oki (28) is the ringleader of a platform that’s currently playing an important role in giving visibility to the Belgian artistic community and bringing homegrown music (and music lovers) to the foreground. With a seemingly interminable roster of activities coming up — including gigs at every interesting sounding festival under the sun, most notably in Uganda (!) for the Nyegue Nyegue festival and an audiovisual collaboration with Ulf Langheinrich — Oki’s artistic output is intimidatingly impressive, whereas her attitude is humblingly nonchalant. Catch her hiding behind the airwaves, between water currents and among the ether of visual spectres — all of the sprawling creations of her own making. Photo by 49 Miles Fischler
Otis Dehaes ‘Living the “good life” and having nothing to do will not satisfy you in the long term — on the contrary. Even though you’ll feel stressed now and then, it’s important to at least give yourself a little pressure by trying to realise certain things you love’
With a passionate father who’s constantly up-to-date with music, Otis Dehaes (21) has, from a very young age, gained a top-notch musical education. It’s definitely defined the path he decided to take: Otis is now a DJ, promoter and agent at Culte Agency, where he represents a few artists. But people mostly recognise him for being the founder of Slagwerk, a collective of six friends with the intention to freshen up the music scene by bringing unconventional sounds to their audience. They’ve been organising gigs for over five years, starting out in Leuven and now in the capital. Busy finalising their first EP to be released at the end of the summer, the guys are also working on their second single series for everything that doesn’t fit within the party setting. Otis and his friends are currently experiencing a peak of novel activities, which promise some great attention for the coming year. Stay tuned! Photo by otis_sw 50 Jill Verhaeghe

Rare Akuma ‘I’m a loner, I don’t care what other people say. I’ve gone against the masses multiple times and come out on top a lot’ If you’re from Antwerp and have wandered into the hip-hop and trap scene, you’ve probably heard of Rare Akuma (21). Locals will just cut to the chase, skip ‘Rare’ and call him ‘Akuma’. A rising star within his own scene and with strong ambitions, Akuma started out when he was 13 editing oldschool songs. Years later, Kum-kum is still busy producing and is now about to complete his latest effort, called Akuma Season, a mix celebrating all kinds of weird genres that aren’t just trap or hip hop. Though he enjoys his alone time to pull music gems out of his cave, Akuma is a member of the international Midnight Society Collective, and also teams up with his brother hrmns to form Renegades. These crews certainly help him expand his horizons, but Akuma is a lone wolf who is careful of the influence of others. To him, letting anyone get in the way of one’s instincts is the worst thing one can do. Listen, and trust yourself. Photo by rareakuma 52 Victor Darmont

Rrita Jashari ‘My sister often calls me Holy Rita, the patron saint of desperate causes, because people on public transport or searching for directions often start conversations or ask me questions. Sometimes it just starts from small talk and ends in long exchanges and philosophical dialogues’
Rrita Jashari (29) is most commonly known via the 54kolaktiv collective, some sporadic DJ sets, and for being the new music programmer at VK Concerts. In her eyes, starting to work at VK has allowed her to take her passion to the next level as she is dedicated to developing, through music, communities within Brussels, and more specifically Molenbeek. When we started listing all of her crews, 54kolaktiv was the main one that popped out. The collective was born in 2007 on the streets of Saint Catherine and with a need to organise not-for-profit parties. A couple of years later, the 54 crew was born, inspired by the spirit of Jamaican free parties. The more than ten years of parties behind these two have opened the door to many new ones, among which we can mention Toestand, Stikstof, Bepotel, Bassin Records and her reggae crew, Livitones. We’d be lying to you if we said that Jashari hates being surrounded by people. Photo by jasharrita 55 Catherine Lemblé
Seelik Tristan ‘Walking on the streets gives me the energy that makes me feel alive’
You may have met him at an after party or walked past him as he wanders the streets of Brussels, beer in hand. Alistaire Seelik (25), aka Golce Dabbana, is a multidisciplinary artist living with 15 other crazy people in a Brussels squat. His most important projects at the moment are 3000 DEGREES, a ‘Performance Running Space’ located at la Brasserie Atlas in Anderlecht; The Sploachsploach Project, where he and his crew focus on philosophical aspects of life and create fictional narratives; and then there’s LEAVING LIVING DAKOTA, a series of parties he organises together with Célia Lutangu where they provide a platform for young visual artists and DJs and bring people together. When you meet him — which is pretty likely if you spend any time in the cultural underground of the capital — you can’t help but feel the vibrant and positive energy Seelik carries with him. Simon Verheylesonne
‘It’s important to have a sounding board instead of letting your visions resonate against the wall of your studio’ Photographer, sculptor, performer, bartender at Kaaitheater… You name it, Simon Verheylesonne’s (27) got it down. This multidisciplinary artist is thirsty and always reshaping the form of his work; he constructs and decontructs it over and over again. But that’s what makes it so great. With an entourage encouraging him to continuously search and an urge for beauty, this perpetual revision only seems logical. Besides that, Simon casually designed the artwork for Zwangere Guy’s album cover and is showing one of his pieces at the moment in the ‘Hugo Claus, Con Amore’ exhibition in Bozar. He’s got a few other things underway: a dance and visual performance piece built with his girlfriend at La Vallée in Brussels, and a sculpture residency at De School van Gaasbeek. You got it: watch this boy. Photo by simonverheylesonne.be 59 Catherine Lemblé
Roel Heremans ‘I used to dislike the notion of a group; now I’m seeing the necessity and the possible empowerment of it’
Roel Heremans (28) is constantly reinventing himself. With a residency at HISK for a year and many exhibitions to come, the guy is unstoppable. Roel started his work as an artistic reflection on a severe accident he went through and of which he doesn’t remember anything. In his work he seeks hybrid artistic forms in between performance, sound, conceptual art, imagination, radio and literature. From this experience it seemed that our brain can be a nest in which reality, fantasy, observations and memories live together. He’s now working on his Room # series, where he recreates abstract rooms from fragmented memories. Every now and then, a new room will be created and featured at an upcoming exhibition.
