The Belgian Underground Issue
When we started working on The Sound Of The Belgian Underground, our new festival with Ancienne Belgique on 26 January, some folks pointed out the increasing international interest in music coming from the alternative circuit in Belgium. Resonance 104.4 FM, a London-based arts radio project, recently aired exclusive material by Lefto, Cupp Cave, GoldFFinch, LTGL, Pomrad and more, while Dalston’s Cafe OTO organised a Belgian evening in cooperation with Kraak. It was all part of the inaugural Belgium Booms electronic music festival, held in London in October. The Wire recently posted an article and a selection of tracks from the Antwerp scene – in the same week we asked Dolphins into the Future’s Lieven Martens Moana to write down his interpretation of a scene report (online soon!). Safe to say we didn’t have much trouble filling this issue; we could have made it double the size, in fact. For some initiates this will be old news; others will hopefully discover a new side of the Belgian music scene. Either way, we hope we can bring the freshmen and veterans of the Belgian underground together in Ancienne Belgique on 26 January! See you there.

Music: Dr Footwear
Music: Roman Hiele
by Ignatz
by Nosedrip
I first met Dr Footwear in 1997 in some bar in Hasselt. I went to the apartment that he shared with the leader of an all-female choir. He let me listen to his music: Dr Footwear. He had a secret, I assumed he had been in jail for harassment. He released one song (out of thousands recorded) on a compilation by Lébo Disques in 1999 called Desolution. You can hear him call a woman, after which there’s a part that’s Ariel Pinkiër than Ariel Pink. A true visionary mind. Dr Footwear is no longer amongst us, but if someone has that compilation, please get in touch with me.
Roman Hiele is the music project of one of Antwerp’s DIY boys. And only partially because of his awesome crest, I officially proclaim him to be the best man ever. His music consist of basslines full of romantic chaos and some lost snare and hi-hat patterns, needless to say his live performances are pure electricity. www.romanhiele.be nosedrip.tumblr.com stroom.tv

December and January recommendations Place: Fauquez
Venue: ECHNUM
by TG Gondard
by Maan
If, like the characters of the movie Brussels by Night, you feel like taking a trip to the centre of Belgium in Ittre (the old, pre-1918 centre), you should travel a little further and explore the nearby village of Fauquez. This village used to be known for the production of marbrite, a cheap glass imitation of marble. The marbrite church is still there in all its coloured glory, but the main attraction is the remaining part of the local cinema theatre, adorned with giant marbrite letters that say ‘bien travailler, bien s’amuser’, it brings back memories of a long-forgotten utopian paternalist capitalism. Inside the ruins you can still enter the projection cabin. The theatre itself has been turned into a meadow, haunted by old movie stars.
The Fresh Antwerp office-turned-underground space ECHNUM is well worth a mention in this section. Hosted by a Belgian-German-Chilean group, it neatly reflects the Belgian underground hood as it ought to be. Skilled in both alive party-construction and performance deconstruction, the fruits of this brotherhood will prove essential and will inevitably leave their unique mark on today’s below-the-radar scene. echnum.blogspot.be www.kraak.net/index.php/artist/release/ maan Photo by Mark Rietveld

December and January recommendations Music: darkness and crossover in Belgian underground Recommended by Hantrax
When it comes to electronic music, I’m very inspired by the period from the end of the Seventies till now, but I’m also focused on song harmonies. De Brassers for example, but also by the Seventies punk and wave of Limburg and the black-shade covered stories from the kids of those days. Darkness in underground music, but also a crossover of styles is very Belgian to me. The lighter shade of new wave is very open minded, liberated in a different, maybe even sort of bisexual way. Berntholer for instance, which makes me think of Jan Fabre’s theatre plays from those days, and Wim Mertens’ Soft Verdict, which is kitsch actually, but very well done, full of emotion. Romanticism. The Same goes for Front 242’s electronic body music, that evolved into the rich culture of electronic dance music of the Eighties. Or New Beat which had its golden era in the Nineties. Many people think it’s funny and totally overdone, but there are a lot of fantastic productions if you look beyond the commercial hype. As a kid in the Nineties, I listened to Channel X, a radio station focussed on dance music, and to Radio Centraal, a non-commercial station here in Antwerp. At this moment I like Mauro a lot, Mauritz Pauwels, and Ultra Eczema, Dennis Tyfus’s label, my biggest inspiration, that hasn’t been released at all as far as I know, Bart Cammaerts or Doctor Chill. www.han-swolfs.be

We Saw You: Spotted at Subbacultcha! Photo by Nina Strebelle
What’s the first record you bought? Maybe Gorillaz’s ‘Clint Eastwood’ single or ‘Blue’ by Eiffel 65. Your first ever music-related memory? The Ecuadorian records of my father, I think… the panpipes and all that. What’s your favourite pastime? Making some beats… Seriously, I really try to get out of my bedroom with these things. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Trying to read a book – but I never even finish the first chapter. Any guilty pleasures? Making myself sneeze. Have you experienced any regrets recently? I try to limit my choices. That prevents lots of regrets each day. What kind of music makes you cry? Minimal and suggestive music – like ‘Stone in Focus’ by Aphex Twin, for example. What makes you dance? Some classic hip hop shit: A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, De La Soul... Which future Subbacultcha! show are you looking forward to? Dean Blunt!
Name: Luca D Age: 22 Spotted at: James Ferraro at Le Bunker, Brussels Home: Brussels Keywords: Parmigiano Reggiano, Dick Annegarn, Oyster Node, Vlek Records, Hype Williams, Dogtooth, soundcloud.com/samuelspaniel, Le Colisée, swimming pool, choops Zodiac sign: Sagittarius What did you think of the show? To tell the truth, I didn’t know what to expect before the concert. What a surprise! I really enjoyed his sounds. The cold digital-synth vibe created a kind of depressive atmosphere, in my opinion. I was really into it. What’s your favourite Belgian food? The chicons au gratin [endives wrapped in ham, slathered in a rich Mornay sauce and baked until crispy on top]. I keep my own secret recipe well hidden. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? New Cupp Cave/Ssaliva stuff. I really like all his tracks. I’ve also been into ‘beat’ for a while now, like Samiyam or Ohbliv – to name just a few.

The Belgian Underground Issue. Interview Some of the most gentle, expressive music coming from the Belgian underground surely can be found in the work of Mia Prce, a contemporary pianist who composes dreamy instrumental ballads under the moniker Miaux. For the past few years, the

Antwerp-based musician has sporadically released her ethereal recordings via labels such as Lieven Martens Moana’s Taped Sounds and Dennis Tyfus’s essential Ultra Eczema. She tells us about dealing with the crazy as a child, her musical evolution and the incomparable appeal of the Belgian scene 12
13
I read that your parents are artists and that you saw some pretty crazy stuff growing up in the Antwerpian art circles. Any special anecdotes? I grew up in Wolstraat, a cosy but crazy little street in Antwerp. Once I came home from school and there was a donkey in our house. I also remember a man dressed as a woman singing, ‘Ra-ra-ra’ and I wondered why he didn’t sing it with an ‘L’. But when I’d see people go berserk or roll around naked on the floor, my parents would make me see the humour in it. How did you find yourself part of Belgium’s musical underground? I recorded my first three songs on 40 tapes and traded them with friends, but it was Dennis Tyfus who set up my first live show. I brought my keyboard wrapped in two pillowcases and people really enjoyed it. Straight after the show Dennis asked me to make a seveninch; since that first release in 2011 on Ultra Eczema everything has evolved very organically. In 2012 Lieven Martens made a tape, which also reached lots of new people. This March I released my second seven-inch on Ultra Eczema and now I’m working on my first LP. Yay! You’ve been active for about two years and you’ve played outside Belgium a lot. What strikes you about the Belgian scene? I’ve been active since 2010. I’ve played in Germany, Holland, Finland, Denmark and Ireland. What strikes me most is the way people act. When I played at the Lal Lal Lal festival in Helsinki, people applauded so politely I thought they were bored, but afterwards they told me how much they loved it and bought all the records. Weird. In Belgium we’re free and relaxed yet still have the politeness to shut up. If the song or the show is good, we’ll cheer, yell, ask for more. Personally, I love it here. There’s always something going on: people are experimenting. I’ve been looping your SoundCloud all day! There’s a sweet, otherworldly quality to your tunes, like Joe Meek played on a kiddy radio. Has motherhood played a part in your creative process? Great! Glad you like it. I don’t think motherhood has much to

When I recorded my first tape I didn’t know I’d be a mother any time soon, ha-ha. Although I did make the first 7” during my four-month-old’s naps, and two of the songs on it also refer to my daughter. The artwork for both of your Ultra Eczema releases revolves around tears. Have you ever seen anyone cry to your music? I just send the songs and Dennis instinctively makes the artwork. He says it makes him sad in a good way. It’s not my intention; I find three of the four songs on Aeronaut very happy and uplifting. There have been some incredible reactions, but I haven’t handed out handkerchiefs yet.

he releases as either Ssaliva or Cupp Cave, two alter egos for subtly different poles of his musical output. He gives us his take on making music on the down-lo and taking from the past to make something new ‘To me, underground is just a way to describe a genre or a scene that doesn’t have strong media recognition’ 19
Ssaliva. Continued How Belgian are you? A hundred per cent, I’d say. Not in musical way, though: I never listened to that much music from Belgium, except for my friends. But I’m Belgian born and raised. So Belgian music isn’t necessarily something you would identify yourself with? Not in a cultural way, but for a couple of years now there’ve been some people I really identify myself with in Belgium, musically speaking. The artists who release on the Brussels-based label Vlek, for instance, but also people like Dynooo (we have a label called Surf Kill together with Nosedrip), Hiele, Bepotel, Herrmutt Lobby. Those guys are the people who influence me the most right now. Would you say these artists (yourself included) are building a new Belgian underground scene? It’s hard to say in terms of musical identity, because we all make different kinds of music, but there is a strong connection between us. I think it mainly has to do with the generation. We’re all about the same age, grew up with the same video games, the same TV shows, the same music, more or less, so the similarities are inevitable. It’s also true we all share production tips, gear and so on, so it’s a mix of lots of things. What does ‘underground’ mean to you? To me, underground is just a way to describe a genre or a scene that doesn’t have strong media recognition. So you wouldn’t say it’s an attitude or production aesthetic, but more a question of the media or public recognition of a certain product? I think it used to be more of an attitude some time ago, when you think about the early days of punk or new wave, when people would trade tapes and so on, but it’s kind of weird to call anything under-
20
ground now in 2013. I guess the term has evolved into something different, and it’s not really something that I actively identify with. I used to listen (and still do) to lots of music that is labelled ‘underground’, but I’ve never specifically identified myself or my music with the underground. What is your musical background, actually? I started listening to music pretty late in my life, around 16 or 17. I went through a nu-metal phase, and then I got deep into hip hop and electronica. I started making music at that time, around 18. Were you ever into electronic music that was considered specifically Belgian, or at least that originated in Belgium? New Beat, for example? I got into New Beat pretty late. I’m too young to have known it back when it got popular, but some of my older friends were actually into New Beat. So I think it kind of worked on me unconsciously. Other than that, I can’t really say I got into Belgian electronic music that much.

‘It’s all about doing your own thing, experimenting in the shadows’ So you never went to the Boccaccio nightclub? Nah, unfortunately not. I went to similar clubs a bit later with older friends, but it wasn’t the golden age any more. It’s hard to imagine people from all around Europe travelling to Destelbergen for a huge clubbing experience. It’s like Berlin’s Berghain being in some random Flemish town. Hard to imagine – at least for me... For me too. I actually haven’t seen the documentary [Jozef Deville’s The Sound of Belgium] yet, but from what I’ve heard it was a pretty surreal time. Do you ever see history repeating itself? In terms of music, everything repeats itself constantly. I find it exciting to see lots of genres from the past merging together into something new. It can get pretty obsessive too, in a creative way. It’s something I think about quite a lot when I make music, trying to make something new out of old influences or older genres. Does underground equal isolation? How deep do you have to go underground before you break through the centre? I think the underground does have something to do with isolation, but I don’t really think there’s a certain underground level to reach before breaking through or whatever. It’s all about doing your own thing, experimenting in the shadows. If something has to Ssaliva plays The Sound of the Belgian Underground on 26 January at Ancienne happen, eventually it will. Bear Bones, Lay Low Interview by Gabriela Gonzรกlez Photos shot by Gabriela Gonzรกlez in Brussels

Ten years ago, the guy behind psych-drone project Bear Bones, Lay Low and Sylvester Anfang II member Ernesto González traded Venezuela for Belgium. Since then he’s made quite the name for himself in the Belgian underground scene. Ernesto and his sis chatted about his countless projects, the musical siblings he looks up to and Latinos invading the Belgian music scene
Hey, brother. I’m starting to lose track of all your projects... Well, Bear Bones, Lay Low is the outlet for all my solo stuff. At first it was all noise and guitar, but now it’s more synth-based and sometimes more structured. Sylvester Anfang II is still around; hopefully we’ll do more stuff soon. Then there’s González & Steenkiste with Glen [aka Hellvete, also from Sylvester Anfang II], which is inspired by minimalism, psychedelia and folk music. Tav Exotic with Mikey [aka Weird Dust] is more like dancey, electronic stuff in the spirit of bands like Crash Course in Science, with a German ’70s vibe. It always ends up sounding slightly Goa-trancey, though... I’m also playing a lot with my friends Tomás and Warre and we’re starting a sort of free-rock band called Jüfro. The common purpose of all of the above is just to trip out. How do you feel being called a ‘sound of the Belgian underground’ although you’re not Belgian? It doesn’t really matter to me. I’ve been making music for a while here and for me it’s just cool to be part of this. It’s not like you can tell I’m Venezuelan just by listening to my albums. There might be some

‘I’m not looking to make some intellectual statement, nor to be groundbreaking’ exotic elements but I don’t think there’s any typical Venezuelan or even Belgian idiosyncrasy to my music. What Belgian artists have shaped or influenced you the most? It’s more like the whole of the experimental underground that inspired me. But I have to say that the dudes from Funeral Folk/Sylvester Anfang – they’re more like brothers now – were a huge influence. I remember seeing their first releases and being so inspired: the music, the artwork... and shortly after I met them I started playing with them. I feel very lucky for that. I also love the guys in Buffle; Lieven Martens with his thousands of monikers; and Laurent Cartuyvels with his label Veglia Records. I remember visiting his website every day. It was NEVER updated but I just liked looking at it! You’ve been making music for almost ten years but you’re still a young dude. Do you aim to stay experimental or are you striving towards a more accessible sound like many musicians tend to do? I don’t really think about things that way. My only aim is to stay creative and keep the train moving. I’m not looking to make some intellectual statement, nor to be groundbreaking. I want to stay experimental and play with sound as much as possible, but I also like melody and structure. It’s about getting certain feelings on tape and hoping the people listening will sense them. So you’re not looking to become a hit machine? No – fuck that! Especially nowadays when everything is instantly

I just want to be able to keep making records and keep finding people who are interested in this and want to collaborate somehow. Otherwise I’ll just do it myself. Do you think more Latinos should invade the Belgian underground? Yeah, we’d have fun in Spanish. But more than an invasion I’d like to see the different underground cliques getting together. I’m not like, ‘Yeah, man, bring all the far-out Latinos to Belgium.’ It’s time to develop shit in our own countries, too. There’s cool stuff going on every-fucking-where, groups of people bonding over their belief in music’s potential to be something other than just some guys recording a demo in a studio and trying to ‘make it’. I guess Belgium’s the place for you, huh? Who knows? For now, yeah – but I don’t know where the fuck I’m going. Don’t know where the fuck it’s gonna end. Seriously, who knows?

Scene Report Liège
Text by Pierre Bihet Photos shot by Nina Strebelle in Liège

Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! Every month we’ll feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report. If you live in the French community of Belgium, a good Friday night hang-out spot is like gold dust – unless you call Liège home, says musician and record label owner Pierre Bihet I’m Pierre Bihet, and I run the music labels Young Girls Records and Pendant que les Champs Brûlent, as well as Venice Beach Communication. My involvement with the music scene in Liège really started around 2004-’05 at the so-called Idiolabo Festival, a freaky gathering of the Belgian underground scene, where I decorated the toilets with collages and drawings. Thanks to Maxime Le Hung from Matamore and Yannick Franck from Idiosyncratics, I met a lot of people from the Liège experimental scene at this crazy carnival. I started to play in an enigmatic band called Dolph Lundgren with some of the people I’d met at Idiolabo. Basically, we played a weird mix of Devo and Napalm Death. We performed some really wild shows wearing masks, full-on costumes and so on. Weirdly, during this period, all of us kept getting sick. We all had this stupid nasal congestion again and again. So I started to play some short and noisy solo performance under the name Congestion Nasal. I would scream into a microphone while a recording of Sylvester Stallone’s voice from Rocky 4 played through the PA. Well, we were wild and young – but that’s history. These days I perform as Dream Beverly Hills, a nonchalant keyboard project which might sound like lo-fi dream pop at first, but really isn’t that pretty upon closer inspection.

Scene Report: Liège. Continued Since 2006 Venice Beach Communication has organised almost 200 different performances in Liège – from James Ferraro to Keith Rowe, from Sister Iodine to Maher Shalal Hash Baz. We’ve always been into outdoor shows, so last year we began to organise them. We started with Jooklo Duo on the top of the old fort, La Citadelle de Liège, more than a hundred metres above the Meuse valley. They played at sunset on a terrace overlooking the town, so we had a really good view of the city with an awesome soundtrack. The saxophone reverberated throughout the valley. That was pretty special. We also hosted a show in an old deserted fort. The trick is simple, just book an artist who can play acoustic, find an original venue and promote the show. If you want to do something in Liège, don’t ask; just do it. That’s our way of life, I guess... These days, there’s loads to do if you come here for the weekend. If you come by train, you’ll stop at our new UFO station, Liège-Guillemins, which comes out of nowhere. When you get off the train, you have to go to a nearby restaurant called Le Concordia brasserie and try the excellent filet Américain. Once you’ve lined your stomach, you can get the night started. If you’re looking for a basement where you can headbang in the dark, La Zone is probably the oldest and most famous venue here. I’ve seen some great shows there – from crazy crust-punk bands to silly rock’n’roll combos. It’s on the other side of La Meuse, so you have to cross a bridge to get to it, but it’s not far – and is worth the effort. The facade looks a little bit like a venue in a Williamsburg basement... Cupper Café, at the end of La rue Hors Chateau, is a small pub in front of this big red church that also has live music. Musicians’ collective Jaune Orange organised a show there recently. It’s a pretty cool place, and you can eat there too if you missed out on the filet Américain earlier.

Scene Report: Liège. Continued If you’re still here on Sunday morning, there’s no better place to recover from your Saturday night than at Le Marché de la Batte, one of the biggest outdoor markets in Europe. Almost two kilometres long, it’s held next to the river and you can get good food and cheap clothes. Then change the pace and go and enjoy a coffee on the terrace of La Casa Ponton, a popular locals’ pub. While you’re in the area, you have to order ‘les boulets sauce lapin’ (meatballs with rabbit sauce, a Liège speciality) at Café Lequet. On summer afternoons, there are often funny rockabilly and rock’n’roll bands playing at Lou’s Bar. Les Olivettes and Le jour du Seigneur can get pretty crazy on Sunday afternoons. The first is a kind of karaoke bar – but without a PA. Instead, there’s a real piano player and some old people singing old popular Walloon and French songs. Those oldies know how to party. We like to go there when we’re drunk. If you’d prefer not to start your working week with a hangover, go straight toward the hill and climb Les Escaliers de Bueren (or turn left just before and climb the other stairs) and ask for directions to Les Terrasses des Minimes. It’s a small public garden, with one of the best views of the city. A good way to end your Sunday night is to watch a movie (it Essential Liège spots: Cercle du could be anything from CronenLaveu, Villa Verkeyn, l’An Vert, berg to Tarkowski) at Le Cinéclub Cupper café, La Zone, les Olivettes, du Laveu. Stop If You Notice That You Are Learning. Try Again. by Joeri Bruyninckx Although the oldest interviews took place barely ten years ago, my book seems to come from a different time. Back then Orphan Fairytale was still living in a tree house in Scheld’apen; the living room of an apartment above Café Leopold in Tienen was the place where every Belgian noise musician was first spotted; Dennis Typhus was still singing in a hardcore band in which John Olson (Wolf Eyes) played drums; Silvester Anfang was rehearsing in the attic of Hellvete’s parents’ house; and Bear Bones, Lay Low was only 17 and had just arrived from Venezuela. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that this is the story of some 25 people who are all connected in one way or another: Dolphins Into The Future, Floris Vanhoof, W Ravenveer and Partkldolg all played together in junk-noise band Dirk Freenoise. Jelle Crama
designed a cover for the tape Ignatz made for the birth of his son, which was released by Dolphins Into The Future. Ignatz also played in Silvester Anfang, along with Bear Bones, Lay Low, Hellvete and Edgar Wappenhalter, who ran the Kraak label. Kraak also started an annual festival where Dirk Freenoise was the opening act – and so it goes on… One could call this amateurism, but this ‘clumsiness’ is the work of people who cultivated this way of working and made it into a genre itself. ‘Brol’ was Belgium’s own variant of the Finnish Underground or the New Weird scene in America. I wanted to describe all this as a fan, from the first row somewhere between participant and observer. This makes it sympathetic, almost voyeuristic, perhaps even interesting... or just ‘Brol’ as well.

From 17 to 20 February 1971, this performer, musician, artist and underground filmmaker organised the Saturn-themed Fluxus Festival in the chapel of De Zwarte Panter gallery in Antwerp. On the fluorescent invitations, which were shaped like ringed planets, Mich described the festival as an Interplanetary Experience. What followed was four days of assemblies, performances, sculptures, improvised music, experimental films (including the premiere of Saturn) and a ‘space theatre’ play wherein grunting piglets were unleashed upon the audience. Keeping things in the family, 34 years later, Ludo Mich’s son, Rufus, and Chris Gillis documented the 25th birthday of Radio Centraal, Belgium’s best radio station. Radio producers knocking on metal buoys is the opening shot for a week of perfect radio weirdness. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tGMjiPj8_A tv.radiocentraal.be/video/40941780

Dramarama Jef Mertens In 2006, following Death Petrol’s art=life experiments, Jelle Crama organised this two-day meeting of the minds in Kunstencentrum België, Hasselt. Kids beware: this was before YouTube, so I could only find QuickTime clips on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace website documented by Taping Policies’ Jef Mertens. Starting with Electronic Magic by Kites, we then have a movie by Matt Brinkman and we end with the true Belgian underground band Hacky Pack Sac Sac: Ultra Eczema’s Dennis Tyfus playing drums with Vaast Colson and Ludo Mich on vocals! www.ecstaticpeace.com/news. php?m=01&y=2006
Jos Steen
Jos Steen Panorama A poet who completely went his own way – and the only musician who knew how to direct a chorus of cows – performing blues with a vacuum cleaner, meaning writing, painting and making music were as important as eating and drinking to Jos Steen. Please watch till the end for a very dry but interesting definition of an ‘underground artist’ as a rarity, living outside of contemporary times. www.cobra.be/cm/cobra/muziek/1.1422214

Walter Swennen
01 December 2013 - 26 January 2014 - WIELS, Brussels Open Wed – Sun 11.00 – 18.00 €8 | Free for members Each year WIELS devotes one of its main exhibitions to a major Belgian artist, this year they chose Walter Swennen, born in Brussels in 1946. After his early activity as a poet in the 1960s, and in the aftermath of the visually reductive conceptual and fundamental art, Swennen decided in the 1980s to examine the lyrical possibilities of painting. The exhibition So Far So Good combines a careful selection of his paintings from the early 1980s until now.
Under the bubbly oOoOO alias (pronounced ‘oh’), San Francisco’s Chris Dexter has been one of the pioneers in shaping up the infamous witch house sound along with other acts such as Salem and Balam Acab. After releasing a couple of self-titled EPs on the progressive NY label Tri Angle, Dexter eventually put out his debut album, Without Your Love, earlier this year via his own Turkey-based imprint Nihjgt Feelings. The newborn label claims to release ‘heartbroken night music’, and we can’t think of a better term to describe oOoOO’s atmospheric ambient pop. With support from Parisian Butterclock and Nosedrip deejaying.

Pink Narcissus is a 1971 arthouse film by New York filmmaker James Bidgood, and was shot in the director’s small apartment over the span of seven years. The film, which visualises the fantasies of a male prostitute, has served as a source of inspiration for visual artists such as Gilbert & George and David LaChapelle.
