Recommendations If you’re in town early, be sure to check out some of Utrecht’s finest spots

Shop: Le Bazarre

Shop: Plato & Plaatboef Utrecht once boasted a bevvy of kitted record shops that would make many a vinyl collector dribble. The iconic Da Capo was home to the rarest punk 7''s, while Boudisque had an impressively eclectic and complete array of alternative titles. But the crisis hit music long ago, and many of the old stores are but a distant memory. Nevertheless, two stalwarts persevere, Plato on the Voorstraat and Plaatboef, ever so conveniently located on the Oudegracht. If you’re looking for the latest and greatest, like The War on Drugs’ Lost in the Dream or Future Islands’ Singles, head over to Plato. If you’d prefer to dust off a few old gems, Plaatboef is your number. Either way, you won’t walk out emptyhanded.

The fourth edition of Utrecht’s cult market takes place at Zocherpark from 12.00 to 17.00 on Le Guess Who? Saturday. Head on over to the end of the Voorstraat and lose yourself in the countless stalls of vintage, design, vinyl and graphic art, and nose around for second-hand clothes and the best regional products.

Recommendations Shop: Formidabel

Shop: Conceptstore Alchemie + KOOF Few will want to be caught dead in Hoog Catharijne, but those out-of-towners who have to saunter through the hellish mall would do well to drop by Conceptstore Alchemie. It’s an oasis of vintage clothes, magazines, pretty furniture and art made by local designers and artists. While you’re at it and working up an appetite, try one of KOOF’s homemade soups or salads. Boven Clarenburg 35, Utrecht

Shop: Eindhoven in Utrecht

Utrecht’s red light district isn’t what it used to be. The Zandpad’s been shut down and the Hardebollenstraat’s gotten a pretty serious facelift too. Among its new residents is this tiny retro shop called Formidabel. Gape at all of the awesome vintage stuff they’ve collected from the ’50s to the ’70s: glasses, crockery, furniture and handy household stuff.

A concept store that brings a little bit of Holland’s design capital to Utrecht. With over 30 young and upcoming Dutch designers featured in a single shop, Eindhoven in Utrecht showcases a wealth of local talent. They make a pretty mean cup of coffee, too.

Recommendations Drink: Kafe Belgie

Food: Bigoli

Over 200 different beers. If that didn’t convince you, the food is good and cheap. Pay no attention to the interior design or the ceiling; just keep your eyes on the beer. Oudegracht 196, Utrecht

If you’re craving a near-perfect sandwich, I have but one word: Bigoli. With your choice of freshly baked breads (olive ciabatta, obviously) and an array of Mediterranean delicacies to adorn your sandwich, why look elsewhere? Not in the mood for a broodje? The lovely staff can also offer you fresh lasagne, quiches, tarts, polpettes, antipasti, tapas, sauces and salads. ’Nuff said.

Drink: Café Derat

Schoutenstraat 7, Utrecht

Food: Il Mulino

We were tempted to keep this one to ourselves. Derat is a tiny little bar down a quiet street close to the Oudegracht. It doesn’t just have the nicest bartenders; they also know their whiskeys better than you ever will. To top it all off, they have a bar cat.

When suffering from ice-cream cravings, this is where you should go. They have the best in town, home-made. It’s super close to Ekko and you can sit next to the canal while enjoying the sun. Need I say more? I recommend the combo of white chocolate and hazelnut. Be prepared to queue, though.

Recommendations Art: Surreal Worlds - Centraal Museum

Misc.: Vechtclub XL Hidden on the edge of a large industrial estate close to the city centre you’ll find an old medical warehouse, drastically transformed into an immense creative hub. Vechtclub XL counts in excess of 175 creative tenants, who rent and share workspaces. Stop by for a cup of coffee in the public bar and have a peek inside the workspaces. From September on they’ll be hosting concerts, exhibitions and other events, so you’ll want to get your foot in the door before. Europalaan 2B, Utrecht

Art: SPRING Performance Art Festival

Known for effectively combining historic and contemporary art, the curators of Centraal Museum have channelled their expertise into this overview exhibition of the surrealist tradition in Holland. It includes works from the likes of JH Moesman and a few more modern takes on the genre. With pieces from Aernout Mik and Philip Akkerman, the exhibition shows the multidisciplinary applications of surrealism through various digital techniques, themselves quite estranging.

Spring is in the air! From 15 to 25 May, Utrecht will be the heart of dance and theatre during the SPRING Performance Art Festival. The most innovative and daring contemporary art performances will be showcased at various locations throughout the lovely historic city centre. www.springutrecht.nl

Recommendations Art: Academiegalerie Recommended by Jimme Bakker Every month we ask someone who inspires us to share something they are passionate about. For this Le Guess Who? Special, we’ve asked Jimme Bakker of Utrecht’s nascent graphic design hub Kapitaal to highlight one of his local stomping grounds.

Nestled in the heart of Utrecht, the Academiegalerie is exactly what you’d expect. Each year, students from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten are offered the chance to reshape the ‘white cube’ into an exhibition of interdisciplinary projects. It’s an HKU hallowed ground, the place where an HKU student first goes public with their own work. With each new exhibition, the gallery is completely transformed, the artist’s imagination bound only by the constraints of the room. I once climbed stairs way up to the ceiling, squeezing myself through a forest of cardboard only to find myself atop a watch tower. It can also be much simpler; the latest exhibition, Close Encounters, sees graphic design and photography students team up to make a photobook. A visit to the Academiegalerie is not without risk, you’ll likely leave with more questions than you initially entered with. On top of that, the bimonthly opening is a ritual for many (old) students: a reunion with former classmates. From behind the occasional sour glance, you can detect a secret affinity or begrudging admiration for what they see. Drop by or secretly peep through the blinds. The Academiegalerie is open from Wednesday until Saturday during exhibitions hours. www.academiegalerie.nl — Minrebroederstraat 16, Utrecht

May Day Special Edition. Interview New album Lost in the Dream wasn’t an easy ride for Adam Granduciel and his men. Taking over a year of re-recording and editing, they finally delivered a wondrous and intricately detailed record

The War on Drugs Interview by Brenda Bosma Photos shot by Isolde Woudstra in Amsterdam, NL

that harbours some of Granduciel’s most inspiring songwriting yet. We sat down with The War on Drugs frontman on one grey Amsterdam morning and talked schticks, painting and the idea of home 17

The War on Drugs. Continued There seems to be a difference in the overall sound between this album and the previous one, Slave Ambient. Do you ever look back when a record is done? There’s a big difference between the two and it’s almost all I think about. On the new one the songs are better and the sound is much wider. It’s less huddled over my home gear, more song-based instead of sonic-based. Slave Ambient didn’t say anything from a personal perspective. For this one I wanted to express myself more, be more open and have something more to hold on to rather than just this idea of the band. I wanted to grow as a writer, producer and bandleader, connect more. There are also no ‘oohoos’ on this one and I counted no more than two howls. Was that a deliberate choice? Yeah, ’cause it sort of became a schtick [Laughs]. Actually there were a lot that were edited out, because yeah, I did do them, even though I must say they were more breathy ‘oohoos’ this time. But it just didn’t fit the idea of the songs being more of a mood. About that mood. Big themes hover over your songs. How do you go about writing them? I love the act of recording, adding stuff when I get another idea or mood, then I also love to chop things. It’s an almost endless process. All these songs started at my house. The original track, the idea, is usually the one I keep and build upon. Then I write the lyrics in bits and pieces as I go. In the last stages, when mixing the songs, that’s when I do the final vocals. By that time I would have gotten more of a feel for the song, and no less than eight months might have passed. I compare it to painting. I wasn’t a really good painter – my paintings always looked like a mess – but I liked the idea of getting lots of colours on there and scraping them off again, then seeing it in a new way.

The War on Drugs. Continued ‘I wasn’t a really good painter... but I liked the idea of getting lots of colours on there and scraping them off again’ Bob Dylan said that creativity is a freight train that is going and going and that you cannot do a lot to stop it, you just have to respect it and not think about it too much. I agree with that. That train springs to mind when listening to the album, like it’s in perpetual motion. Then you end the album with the song ‘In Reverse’. You go back again? Where to? I think the idea of home is a big thing in a lot of music, finding your way back to that place of comfort and looking for the easiest way to get there, and having the feeling you can get there easily. Do you want it to be easy? No, but I want it to be enjoyable. I think part of the journey of this album was trying to find the enjoyment in what I was doing. Making music for me has always been very therapeutic. Then when I found myself having it collide for me, I found it incredibly hard to find enjoyment from it in the same way I had. I didn’t enjoy making this record. Still, I worked on it a lot, I didn’t cut myself any breaks. Now when I listen to it and I’m out of the editing phase, I really enjoy it. So, can we maybe expect more ‘oohoos’ from your live shows? No problem. It’s interesting, when I started to play the songs live with the band, hearing them come to life, it’s then that it will take on that new role, where the heart of Check out the Le Guess Who? Laraaji Phone interview by Brenda Bosma Photos shot by Christopher Schreck in Laraaji’s home in Brooklyn, NY

May Day Special Edition. Interview After working with Brian Eno in the 1980s and releasing a series of New Age albums, laugh-master, meditator and cosmic zitherist Laraaji Venus Nadabrahmananda is back in our little country to enlighten us with his soothing sounds from the heart. A little while back we spoke to Laraaji about dissolving through sound and laughing yourself into a state of bliss That’s an interesting name. What does it all mean? Oh, thank you! Laraaji is a celebration of the sun. It’s holding the sun as a very divine being and using the Egyptian sound ‘Rah’ and the Indian ‘Ji’, which is a generic spontaneous term people put after the name of someone they hold very dear. It came to me when I was homeless for a couple of days. I decided to experiment with being in that zone and lived on the subway. One day I was resting on this comfortable bench in Central Park and I looked up and there was the beautiful sun shining on me. It felt as if it was the closest friend I had. A friend who was honouring me, nurturing me. Luckily it wasn’t raining! Yes – or I would have had a name for the rain. I felt love that day. That’s the Venus part explained. Nadabrahmananda roughly stands for the bliss of the ultimate sound vibration. It is the joy one feels when experiencing the eternal and infinite presence. Back in 1974, there was a moment where I had the sense of being immersed in an eternal,

23

Laraaji. Continued ‘My personal self dissolves and cannot be housed in a building. I’m eternal’ infinite universe. I was listening to an internal orchestra while I was meditating, and actually felt the unity of an eternal infinite universe right there. That’s amazing, but also pretty hard to grasp. I appreciate being reminded, actually. I wouldn’t have understood it had I not had the experience myself. Although it’s real for me, I know it can’t be properly explained and transmitted into words. That’s where the sounds come in, perhaps. Can you explain what one hand clapping sounds like? It’s a startling feeling. You have this belief about yourself and it’s real to you. When I hear the sound of one hand clapping it’s changing the whole ball game. Then I’m hearing oneness. The sound of nothing – no thing. All the frameworks are gone. My personal self dissolves and cannot be housed in a building. I’m eternal. It’d be nice if that sound was a tune so we could hum it on our way to work or in line at the supermarket. Well, I have some good news, and some slightly less good news. The good news is that that tune is everywhere all the time. The less good news is that it requires discipline and focus to get to it. It’s so near that we have to practice listening to it. About your Laughter Meditation Workshops. Do you tell jokes? I used to, when I was a stand-up comedian. Nowadays, what I do is get people in touch with their playful inner-child spirit by doing laughing exercises. To keep building up the laughter I get into playful, humorous interactions with them.

Laraaji. Interview ‘If you laugh and smile in a certain way, you can trigger happiness. Mindful laughing is very effective. It’s like medicine’ Humorous interactions? Like someone yawning in a public space? I get people to use their voice to vibrate their heart. I get them to say their name followed by the exclamation: ‘My little [your name] is sooo beautiful!’ Then I ask them to move around while repeating that phrase. The other replies: ‘You suuure are!’ Since everyone has their fair amount of ‘subpar’ days, how do you get yourself in the mood for a session? There are times when I’m more challenged than others. Once I got a call from my girlfriend, who told me she was madly involved with a friend of ours. I didn’t feel like laughing, but within five minutes, I got into the mood. I proved my own theory that if you laugh and smile in a certain way, you can trigger happiness. Mindful laughing is very effective. It’s like medicine. Can you share a lesson with us? Smile! But it has to be a smile that gives you little wrinkles next to your eyes. Your mood will shift to a happier state. Also, watch your breathing, play with it and honour it as a vehicle to deeper relaxation. Laughter is the shortest distance between two people, but it’s also the shortest distance between you and yourself. Let’s try it! [Laughs an intentional laugh] – ‘My little Laraaji is soooo beautiful!’ ‘He suuuure is!’ – [Laughing intentionally together]. Check out the Le Guess Who? May Day timetable to find out where and when Laraaji plays on 24 May.

May Day Special Edition. Interview Sun Araw’s universe is a weird but wonderful one. Having released over a dozen records, including one with the legendary Jamaican group The Congos, his latest, Belomancie, is more a series of head

spaces with unexpected twists and turns than it is a collection of songs. For those willing to explore his musical universe with an open mind, it’s equally rewarding. We spoke to the astral feedback master about putting your pants on, enlightenment and licking the monolith ‘I’m not trying to move, I’m trying to be moved’ 29

Sun Araw. Continued I read Sun Araw means ‘sacred rest’. How do you find rest being as busy as you are? I’m not sure that I do, but it’s definitely something I aspire to. We have a lot of levels we operate on, so there’s something about not letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing, you know? There are parts of yourself that need to be walled off from other parts of yourself. You gotta be undercover a little bit. And can you also relax on a couch while being undercover? I’m having a hard time at that. I’m a real active person. There’s a big part of me that wants to lie on the couch and listen to beautiful sounds, but halfway through I’m back up and trying to do something. I just want to put my pants on and let that be the last decision I make during the day. I’m not trying to move, I’m trying to be moved. Dalí had this working method where he tried to get into a state between wakefulness and sleep by falling asleep on a chair while holding a spoon. The moment the spoon fell to the ground he’d wake from the sound and have the images he dreamt of right there in his mind. How do you allow yourself to be flooded by ideas and bask in the glow, so to speak? What moves you? I used to work at a film archive where we had a nap room. I spent a lot of time in that weird space. I didn’t have a spoon, I’d just put a pillow over my head. I wasn’t trying to wake up for anything. I was happy though. About a method: I don’t have one. I just start jamming. It tends to be a bad idea to have too many ideas beforehand. You want it to be in the moment? Yeah, I’m a completely present man. I’m without any thought of what I want it to sound like, without any attempt to direct it. Obviously I have those thoughts and feelings, but they’re coming out in a more direct way. They don’t need to pass through the brain pan first, they can come out through the fingers.

30

Suna Araw. Continued ‘I’m a completely present man. I’m without any thought of what I want it to sound like, without any attempt to direct it’ So the gifts are in the present, not in the past or future? Definitely, dude! But what about the future? The point is to not even try to know and also to realise that you already know. It’s just about remembering that you know. What are you gonna do next? I have no idea. I love that. I’m happiest when I’m not in control. I think too much to be in control. Putting my pants on is the last decision I make. I’m wearing blue shorts, by the way. What if after this you were confronted with a strange floating monolith. What would you do? I would probably look at it, touch it, I’d even rub up against it. Then I would lick it. What would it taste like? It would taste bitter, ’cause things taste bitter when we haven’t formed an opinion of them yet. In our minds it will taste great, because that’s just a decision. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like you have one, but deep down you do.

A short story by

The Range Photos shot by David Brandon Geeting in New York, USA

33

The Range. Continued From the comfort of home, The Range produces some of the most precise and mathematical tracks. But life on the road isn’t quite so formulaic. James tells us an all-too-familiar short story about late nights, alarm clocks and early morning duties I would have to say the most recent tricky situation I was in was at SXSW this year in Austin. Really late on Friday night I went to see Skrillex with a bunch of people for the first time. Schoolboy Q played sections of ‘Man of the Year’ at least three times, the whole A$AP mob (definitely over 100 people) was onstage and I saw way too many Billionaire Boys Club shirts; it was one of my favourite nights in recent memory. By the time I got to bed it was probably 6.30am, and of course I dutifully didn’t set any alarms for my early show the next day. I woke up at 11.40 to: ‘James, James, JAMES, WAKE UP YOU HAVE TO GO!’ and sprang up to somehow get to the 12pm show on time. I knew I’d have no shot at catching a cab in the neighbourhood so I started running towards the main highway that runs through Austin hoping to grab one there. Of course, no cab would dream of stopping on the highway. Eventually I realised I’d be going by foot and started to run as fast as I could to the venue and somehow made it to the stage at 11.58. Google Maps had said it was going to be a 17-minute cab ride from where I woke up so I’m still a little unclear as to how I made it in time, but somehow it all worked out and I ended up taking a selfie with DJ MusCheck out the Le Guess Who? Sean Nicholas Savage Interview by Zofia Ciechowska photo shot by Adam Kremer in New York, USA

Montreal’s indie guru finally stepped into the limelight last year with his Arbutus sixth release. Other Life contains some of the most heart-wrenchingly sincere music your soul will ever experience, and you can count on follow-up Bermuda Waterfall to do the same. We asked Sean about his devastating candor and whether he’s ever serenaded the moon 36

37

38

Sean Nicholas Savage. Continued Do you think that in a faraway universe or in the world of microbes there is another Sean Nicholas Savage serenading the moon? I have serenaded the moon many times. I have an unreleased song called ‘Girl Touches Moon’ but it’s actually about me. I don’t want to tell the story, but it’s very sexual. I have a very sexual relationship with the moon. If you see a star that means the light from the star touched your eye, and that means that there’s information from the star touching your face and it’s affecting you. The moon is this big dead rock that is so close to us, blasting sunlight at us all the time. The fact that you can just stand there and stare at the moon is completely moving. What advice do you have for heartbroken office drones who are secretly typing poetry into Excel spreadsheets? That’s beautiful, I wouldn’t change anything about that. If you don’t like your job, get a new one. But writing poetry in Excel sounds great. Writing is so wonderful. It’s good for your brain and it can move other people, it’s so important to write in order to learn about language. Travelling a lot and talking to so many people in different languages teaches you a lot about meaning. But then we get words like ‘the end’ that turn out to be a faltering description of a much greater state. I like words like that, like ‘art’, ‘beautiful’ or ‘gay’ – what do these words mean? Language is too simple to work. We’re already having a huge problem with communicating even if we speak the same language! Music is beautiful because it allows you to express emotions with your message. I could just record myself giving little speeches, but I would want to add a little music to them and then maybe I’d want to sing a little bit, because singing is really nice. That’s what I do. Check out the Le Guess Who? May Day timetable to find out where and when Sean Nicholas Savage plays on 24 May.

Cooking With... By Zofia Ciechowska. Image by Carlijn Potma

Future Islands Is there any recipe you really enjoy making? I’m not really a recipe guy. I kind of just shoot from the hip. I made a potato salad for the first time the other day! It was pretty good. No recipe though, I just asked four or five people how to make it and then I just did it how I wanted to do it, ha-ha. This is a non-recipe recipe for my special breakfast. It’ll give you super strength... or send you back to sleep.

You’re probably thinking, What am I supposed to do with a recipe at a festival? But come Sunday morning, you’ll definitely be craving some of Sam Herring’s Special Breakfast. I always thought that one day when I have a big grown-up kitchen I would get those tiles with meaningful mantras that housewives put in their houses but instead I’d put some Future Islands’ lyrics on them. Ha-ha! My parents have one to this day in their kitchen that says, ‘If mama ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy.’ I love that one. No truer maxim has ever been spoken. Are you into fish at all, given your last name? Or has it done that reverse psychology thing that makes you run from tins of tuna and aquariums? I love to eat fish! I really liked fried bluefish as a kid. It’s pretty plain but I still love it, though. I’ve heard of this Dutch food called broodje haring, can you get me some of that, please?

How to make Sam Herring’s Special Breakfast • Dice potato and throw into a wok. Fry on medium heat with some olive oil, until golden brown. • Chop kale and add to the wok. • Add a couple tablespoons of water into the wok to steam and cover. • In a separate pan, fry those eggs and those sausages. (I like my yolks runny and with plenty of salt and pepper.) • Boom! Then consume.

Future Islands Singles

Mac DeMarco Salad Days

For their first album in three years, Baltimore synth-pop evangelists Future Islands usher in a new era: they switched labels to indie powerhouse 4AD, added a drummer to their set-up and brought in heavyweight indie producer Chris Coady to give their songs a bit more punch. As a result, Singles sounds more liberated and immediately accessible than anything that preceded it. Big changes aside, they remain as obsessed with the inherently dichotomic nature of life as ever – day vs night, home vs away, romance vs heartbreak, intimacy vs freedom. Which state is preferable? And speaking of tough questions: Would I rather listen to this music on headphones or a crowded dancefloor? The answer is ‘both’. Both are necessary, both are vital. Kind of like this band.

There’s a lot to be said for personality. At the ripe old age of 23, Mac DeMarco has carved out an extraordinarily weird niche for himself as a pretty talented guy who writes catchy but humble rock’n’roll songs that people love a thousands times more because they’re delivered by a gap-toothed goofball who does. not.give.a.fuck. Or at least he didn’t used to. His new album, appropriately titled Salad Days, is sprinkled with hints at newfound maturity. This is still Mac DeMarco we’re talking about here, so ‘growing up’ by no account means ‘settling down’. Every ever-wiser lyric and ever-suaver croon is delivered with that same impish smile, that same mischievous twinkle in his eyes, that same cheesy wink (that wink!) that somehow contain the secret to Mr DeMarco’s peculiar charm.

Music Reviews The War on Drugs Lost in the Dream

Amen Dunes Love

The War on Drugs lord Adam Granduciel wears his love for Springsteen, Dylan, and Tom Petty on his sleeve, and listening to his band is kind of like dating a dude who reminds you a lot of your dad. When you come across something particularly familiar, you feel a bit uncomfortable, but in spite of this awkward sensation you can’t help but love it, and hey, it’s NOT your dad so it’s totally OKAY!

Damon McMahon has made some beautifully benumbing and unforgettable music, but his early work was sometimes overshadowed by its lo-fi production and a bit unfocused. Maybe he was just being shy, maybe he just wasn’t that into it. On his new album, Love, he sounds like someone who finally feels confident and moved enough to shout from the rooftops; it’s certainly got me swooning.

Hardly Art The cover of this Detroit post-punk four-piece’s temperamental and rough hewn first album featured a pensive-looking old man and the title No Passion All Technique. A snarling German Shepherd adorns the cover of their new album. Given their penchant for irony, it is unsurprisingly more dispassionate-sounding and dexterous than their debut. It’s also unique and pretty fucking terrific.

You can grab any of these albums – vinyl or CD – at Plato Records in Utrecht. Show them your copy of this magazine and you’ll get a 10% discount. Offer ends on Sunday, 25 May. Voorstraat 35, Utrecht

New Films in Utrecht By Basje Boer

With your musical appetite satiated by Saturday’s lavish spread, stick around Sunday and feast your eyes on the following cinematic spectacles

Blue Ruin Jeremy Saulnier - 2013

Director Jeremy Saulnier may be an indie filmmaker but he’s Steven Spielberg at heart. His Blue Ruin, which was selected for Cannes’ Director's Fortnight, gives a unique twist to the revenge flick in a way that reminds us of both Spielberg’s bold Duel and the Coen brothers’ Blood Simple. Protagonist Dwight tries his hand at revenge but lacking the cool of your usual movie hero, his saga is mostly messy. Highly suspenseful, at times funny, and most of all very original. Les salauds

The Wind Rises

Claire Denis - 2014

Hayao Miyazaki - 2014

Claire Denis is by far one of the most interesting female directors working today, delivering uncompromising films driven by atmosphere, style and arresting performances. Her latest, Les salauds (‘The Bastards’), is a dark neo-noir that’s reminiscent of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. The story, about a sea captain who returns to Paris when his brother-in-law commits suicide, unfolds slowly, raising more questions than it answers. Revenge is plotted, but the film-noir reference would mean jack if there wasn’t a femme fatale involved. ’t Hoogt, Hoogt 4, Utrecht Tickets: www.hoogt.nl

It was a sad day for anime in particular and film culture in general when Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement. As the face of Studio Ghibli and the brain behind such animation classics such as Oscar winner Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki has become the poster boy for anime – hell, he’s become the poster boy for Japanese cinema. His swan song, The Wind Rises, is appropriately melancholic; a melodrama about war, true love, life and death – not to mention, aviation. ’t Hoogt, Hoogt 4, Utrecht Tickets: www.hoogt.nl

New Music: Solar Year

Film: Lydia Ainsworth

Solar Year (Ben Borden and David Ertel) have become part of the eponymously cool Montreal music family with a bunch of new-age electro-pop tracks under their belt, not to mention some guest vocals from the Grimes goddess herself. The duo have been heard to call their music ‘psalmgaze’, something probably said tongue-in-cheek but immediately pounced on by rabid music journalists like myself – all because of a Gregorian chant sample, ha! Check out their Brotherhood EP, available for free download on the Arbutus Records website and be on the lookout for their fulllength, Waverly, which is due to appear at the end of June on Splendour.

Brooklyn music lady Lydia Ainsworth is simply thrilling. Lydia, if you’re reading this, come and have pizza with me! Come and have pizza with the world! This former student of Joan La Barbara has composed for filmmakers, visual artists, poets and contemporary dance groups, putting her at the epicentre of artistic expression, making her the coolest lady everrr. Lydia’s otherworldly vocals are accompanied by a string quartet, drummers, keyboards and this brilliant self-devouring fast-food collage animation. Listen and be happy.

May Day Special Edition. Guide B—H

On the following pages you can read up on this year’s May Day line-up Big Ups On this NYC four-piece’s new debut, Eighteen Hours of Static, frontman Joe Galarraga alternates between furious howl and disaffected, Ian Mackaye-esque monotone as the band bashes out 28 relentless minutes of post-punk corroded by the bile of classic punk and post-hardcore bands like the Descendents, Minor Threat and Fugazi.

as Future Islands and Dan Deacon for whom ‘music beat’ means post-punk stripped down to its barest essentials. Future Islands While the awe-inspiring live performances of these Baltimore synth-pop evangelists have helped them gradually build a feverishly devout cult following, their fantastic new album, Singles, and breakthrough Letterman performance find them poised to finally hit the big time.

Black Lips This Atlanta ‘flower punk’ four-piece may have made a name for themselves with their wild shows and outrageous on-stage antics, but over the past couple of years they’ve notched up their professionalism and musical chops enough to compel on record too.

Ensemble Economique Brian Pyle, aka Ensemble Economique, also of Starving Weirdos and RV Paintings, conjures up eerie and bleakly beautiful sample-filled drone compositions which belie his sunny California origins.

Chasing Rainbows A highly influential character on the Dutch music scene for years, Henk Jonkers has played in Fatal Flowers, Daryll-Ann and Hallo Venray and produced records by zZz and Claw Boys Claw, and is now working his magic with American friend Lawrence Rengert’s psych-pop project Chasing Rainbows.

Golden Animals With their bluesy psychedelia and singer Tommy Eisner’s Jim Morrisonesque croon, you can almost imagine this nomadic desert duo playing in the background of one of those Easy Rider rides across the American Southwest. Hallo Venray A mainstay of the Dutch rock music scene since the ’80s, Den Haag’s Hallo Venray attained early success with catchy, Neil Young-inspired, guitar-

garde carries his solo work into what he calls a ‘folky trip hop blues metal universe’.

Hiss Golden Messenger MC Taylor and Scott Hirsch first played together in hardcore band ExIgnota and then lauded alt-country outfit The Court & Spark before relocating to North Carolina and forming Hiss Golden Messenger, whose countrified folk rock is as easygoing and enjoyable as a backyard barbecue.

Laetitia Sadier Former Stereolab frontwoman Laetitia Sadier’s sophisticated, sumptuous alto has a remarkably soothing quality about it, while the breezy, Serge Gainsbourgian arrangements she now surrounds herself with are capable of whisking one away to a Parisian cafe in the ’60s.

Jeremiah Jae Chicago native and Flying Lotus collaborator Jeremiah Jae describes himself as an emcee, producer, visual artist and healer. Appropriately, given that mystical self-description, Jae uses spacey, psychedelic production reminiscent of FlyLo’s own style and nebulous vocals to create a dreamlike effect with his compositions.

Laraaji & Sun Araw Discovered performing on the street in the ’70s by Brian Eno, Laraaji Nadananda mastered various instruments before making his greatest impact with the zither. He will be joined on stage by psych experimentalist and protege Sun Araw. Paul White London producer and frequent Danny Brown collaborator Paul White eschews the usual soul, jazz and funk sample sources of his hip-hop brethren in favour of prog and psych rock, reggae and obscure vinyl, utilising them with a skilful touch and playfulness that makes for an idiosyncratic and captivating signature sound.

MC Atactic Boemklatsch may be over, but MC and local hero Atactic continues his reign over Utrecht’s nightlife. He’ll host May Day’s brand spanking new hip hop night in Utrecht’s brand spanking new venue, TivoliVredenburg, featuring upand-coming artists The Range, Jeremiah Jae, Paul White and Tree.

Pharmakon Diminutive and deceptively wild New Yorker Margaret Chardiet thrashes your ears with her ridiculously heavy, ridiculously raw power electronics/ death industrial music. Her live performances are equally confrontational and cathartic.

Mutual Benefit A travelling recording project centred around multi-instrumentalist Jordan Lee, Mutual Benefit released one of last year’s most delicately beautiful and rewarding albums in Love’s Crushing Diamond.

Petrels London-based musician Oliver Barrett churns dense soundscapes from esoteric sources, but it’s his grand ideas concerning mythology, science fiction and the occult that bleed through into a superlatively evocative ambience.

Ryley Walker Having grown weary of the Chicago experimental scene he was involved in for years, this singer-songwriter decided to completely revamp his sound into an accessible but impressively ornate folk rock inspired by idols like Tim Buckley and Bert Jansch.

Sean Nicholas Savage Montreal indie guru Sean Nicholas Savage uses cheesy, simplistic adultcontemporary instrumentation as a medium to convey poignant and fairly devastating sentiments, and his unpredictable and captivating live shows are more than a little magical.

Shonen Knife Over the last 30 years, this Ramoneschannelling all-girl pop-punk band from Osaka has built a worldwide cult following and have counted Sonic Youth and Kurt Cobain among their biggest fans. Speedy Ortiz

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan

Speedy Ortiz Though this Massachusetts outfit wears their love for ’90s legends like Pavement and Liz Phair on their flannel sleeves, their intimate and inventive indie rock adds up to far more than the sum of their influences.

together PANGEA LA rock’n’rollers’ together PANGEA’s killer guitar solos, colossal drums and occasionally wildly catchy vocal hooks should bring together fans of Ty Segall, Black Lips and FIDLAR into a single earthquake-addled mass of a mosh pit.

Talvihorros On his latest LP, Edinburgh composer Ben Chatwin moves away from his signature guitar textures, the depth and density of its analogue electronics proving him a boundless talent.

Tree Though he’s been at it since the ’90s, Chicago rapper Tree’s signature ‘soul trap’ production and unusually gravelly and soulful voice have only recently started gaining the recognition they deserve. His unique sound is tough to lump in with other trendy rappers, so – for now – he remains one of rap’s best-kept secrets.

The Range Rising Providence-based producer The Range’s often frenetic but always emotive, bass-heavy compositions draw as much from UK club music as they do from pop and hip hop, and have earned him comparisons to a cross between Caribou and Four Tet.

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan This Toronto collective originated as a means for founders Alaska B and Ruby Kato Attwood to explore their Asian/Canadian ancestry. Much like their dualistic name and heritage, they operate in two modes: as an elaborate performance-art piece and as a rock band influenced by metal, prog rock and Asian pop music.

The War on Drugs Adam Granduciel wears his love for Springsteen, Dylan and Tom Petty on his sleeve, but he somehow manages to transform these classic Americana influences into music that’s both comfortingly familiar and thrillingly new.
