Every cloud has a silver lining...

Even an injury can act as an impulse to create an innovative product combining computational design, fashion and medical use. We engaged the client in the entire process. With parametric design approach and 3D scanning, the client became the co-author of his own medical device – a custom-made orthopa‐ edical orthosis for his ankle joint fracture.

Hovorí sa, že všetko zlé je na niečo dobré, a teda aj úraz môže dať podnet na vytvorenie nového dizajnového riešenia kombinujúceho módu a medicínske použitie. Aj vďaka interaktívnym procesom sa tak pacient stal spolutvorcom zdravotnej pomôcky - ortopedickej ortézy členko‐ vého kĺbu vyrobenej na mieru.

Each of us is unique. Each person has different needs and preferences.

When it comes to medical devices, their appearance had never been the main point of interest. We, however, think that medical devices like orthoses and splints should not only reflect anatomical parameters and ergonomics, but also the lifestyle, preferences and taste of the user.

A great design increases the accep‐ tance of the medical device and the satisfaction of the patient and therefore also the whole efficiency of the product and medical treatment.

Design is for us a collaborative process. The most important innova‐ tions are created in synergy between specialists from different fields. This is why we incorporated 3D scanning and digital fabrication into our computational design process, combining our expertise of Subdigital with the competences of Photoneo, Invent Medical and one3D. We took the challenge to set up the right strategy and technology that embraces the designer touch of Subdigital to create a fashionable, yet high-performance product.

Každý je jedinečný. Potreby a prefe‐ rencie každého z nás sú odlišné. Čo sa týka zdravotných pomôcok, vzhľad bol obyčajne až na poslednom mieste.

Kvalitný produkt sa predsa musí prispôsobiť nielen anatomickým para‐ metrom, ale aj životnému štýlu a módnym preferenciám užívateľa.

Skvelý dizajn výrazne zvyšuje mieru akceptácie zdravotníckej pomôcky a spokojnosť používateľa, teda celkovú efektivitu produktu a liečby.

Dizajn je pre nás vždy kolaboratívny proces. Preto sme sa rozhodli pri tomto projekte využiť potenciál najmodernejších technológií za pomoci digitálnej fabrikácie. K inováciám dochádza vtedy, ak sa stretnú a spolu‐ pracujú odborníci z rôznych oblastí, a tak sme pre tento projekt sme spojili Subdigital s Photoneo, InventMedical a one3D. Najväčšou výzvou a inová‐ ciou pre tento projekt bolo vyvinúť vhodnú stratégiu, zvoliť správne tech‐ nológie a nástroje, ktoré cez diza‐ jnérsky jazyk štúdia Subdigital vytvorí módny a zároveň vysoko funkčný produkt.

3D SCANNING vv

Stage one

In this project, Photoneo 3D Vision tested the high detail scanning of a human body for medical purposes.

Photoneo used the MotionCam-3D camera of their own production for the body scan (patient´s right leg, from the knee to fingertips). It was an obvious choice because of the need to scan the whole surface of the foot, including the calf and foot in one 360-degree shot. While scanning, the camera was moved around the leg. The Photoneo’s own deve‐ loped MotionCam-3D is the only camera in the world that is able to scan moving scenes in high quality and resolution.

Photoneo developed a special software to be paired with their camera, which, instead of a pointcloud produces a “mesh in real time” – a 3D model with continuous surface that does not need any other post‐ production. The output of such scanning and meshing process is a high-resolution meshed surface 3D model of the leg available in the STL file format.

The use of such processes for medical purposes has great advantages.

Among others, it is mainly the speed and simplicity of the process. In good conditions, the model is ready in 1-2 minutes and there are no limitations or special procedures patients should undergo before the scanning.

The combination of the MotionCam3D and the special software allows the scanning of any object and surface – it is widely useable in several industries: from the car industry and logistics to food industry and medicine.

#Photoneo 3D

3D skenovanie: Firma Photoneo 3D vision na tomto projekte testovala skenovanie ľudského tela s detail‐ nosťou pre medicínske použitie. Na skenovanie ľudskej nohy použili svoju vlastnú 3D kameru MotionCam-3D. Táto voľba bola jednoznačná, keďže bolo potrebné naskenovať celý povrch nohy, vrátane chodidla a predkolenia 360-stupňovým záberom. To dosiahli tým, že sa kamera pri skenovaní pohy‐ bovala okolo nohy a práve Motio‐ nCam-3D dokáže ako jediná kamera na svete priestorovo snímať pohybu‐ júce sa scény vo vysokej kvalite a rozlíšení.

Vo firme Photoneo vyvinuli pre kameru špeciálny softvér, ktorý nevytvára samostatné body (point cloud), ale celistvú 3D geometriu (mesh) v reálnom čase , počas skenovania a nevyžaduje žiadne ďalšie spraco‐ vávanie. Výstupom takéhoto procesu bol detailný povrchový 3D model nohy vo formáte STL. Táto metóda prináša veľké výhody, napríklad vysokú rýchlosť skenovania a generovanie meshovej geometrie – za priaznivých podmienok trvá vytvorenie 3D modelu 1-2 minúty.

Pre medicínske použitie je tiež dôležitá neinvazívnosť – je to bezkontaktná metóda, ktorá nevyžaduje žiadnu špeciálnu prípravu ani obmedzenia skenovaného človeka.

Kombinácia MotionCam-3D a tohto špeciálneho meshovacieho softvéru umožňuje skenovanie akýchkoľvek objektov a povrchov a poskytuje široké spektrum využitia v mnohých odvet‐ viach, od automobilového priemyslu cez logistiku až po potravinárstvo či medicínu.

DESIGN Stage two

Subdigital studio´s main focus is computational design. We work mainly with the Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper software, which allow us to design using complex parame‐ tric models and simulations.

The splint project was a great chance to present the capacities of the methods and tools we use. We went through multiple stages, from processing the 3D scanned model, through parametric analysis and modeling and the generative design of the form to optimization for the fabrication.

Dizajn: V štúdiu Subdigital sa zameria‐ vame na digitálne navrhovanie (computational design). Pracujeme najmä v softvéroch Rhinoceros 3D a Grasshopper, v ktorých vytvárame dizajn pomocou sofistikovaných para‐ metrických modelov a simulácií.

Projekt dlahy bol pre nás výbornou výzvou a zároveň prezentáciou našich možností. Spájal v sebe množstvo úloh, od práce so zložitým modelom, ktorý vznikol pomocou 3D skenovania, cez modelovanie, parametrickú analýzu a generovanie tvaru, až po optimalizáciu pre 3D tlač.

The basic concept of the design was to use physics models and simula‐ tions to evaluate the forces in the shell of the splint and the trans‐ formation of these parameters to forms. Such high-performance and visually complex and appealing detailed forms can be produced only by using the 3D printing technology.

Pri tvorbe dlahy boli použité fyzikálne modely a simulácie prechodu síl v škrupine, ktorá tvorí dlahu. Takéto vysoko funkčné, ale aj vizuálne atrak‐ tívne, detailné a zložité tvary je možné vyrobiť len pomocou 3D tlače.

The basic concept of the design was to use physics models and simulations to evaluate the forces in the shell of the splint and the transformation of these parameters to forms.

#Subdigital

The first part of our work was to process the 3D scanned data – from the mesh model to the clean mathe‐ matically defined (NURBS) surface to be evaluated and processed further.

Photoneo scanned the leg multiple times to ensure the highest precision possible, each time aiming for a certain part of the calf, ankle or foot. That meant that the 3D scan consisted of multiple separate mesh models. To get a single complete model that would be as precise as possible, we cut the mesh geometries perpendicularly to the axis of the model. We spread these resulting cut-curves on the plane and conse‐ quently rebuilt each set of sections to make a clean and mathematically valid curve. When placing these sections back in the position around the axis, we get a precise wireframe model and a valid closed surface.

Prvou časťou našej práce bolo spraco‐ vanie meshového 3D skenu do podoby čistej matematickej plochy. Takýto typ geometrie dokážeme parametricky ďalej spracovávať a vyhodnocovať.

Meshový model zraneného členku skenovali kolegovia z Photoneo niekoľko krát. Pri každom pokuse sa zamerali na iný detail členku, priehl‐ avku a ďalších častí nohy tak, aby vznikol výsledný model s minimálnou odchýlkou. To zároveň znamenalo, že sa skladal z niekoľkých samostatných objektov. Aby sme získali jeden úplný a kompletný objekt, vyhladili nepres‐ nosti a uzavreli otvory, narezali sme meshové modely kolmo na ich os. Tieto rezy sme rozložili na plochu a prebudo‐ vali na jednu čistú a geometricky správnu krivku. Keď sme ich vložili späť na ich miesto okolo osi nohy, získali sme funkčný drôtený model nohy zložený z kolmých rezov a z neho sme vytvorili validnú matematickú plochu.

The mathematically defined model of the leg (NURBS geometry) was trimmed to the shape of the shell structure around the calf, heel and ankles – areas where the structure is necessary for the functionality of the splint. This shell was ready for structural evaluation in the Millipede plugin for Rhinoceros 3D and Gras‐ shopper software. We calculated the precise values for bending, stress and pressure flows in the shell. This process did not generate the 3D prin‐ table geometry yet, but we calcu‐ lated information and parameters (stresslines and force intensities in certain places). Based on those, we are able to generate a highly performative 3D printable shape.

Matematicky definovaný model nohy (NURBS geometriu) sme orezali do tvaru škrupiny, ktorá mala hmotu len v miestach, kde bola reálne potrebná pre funkčnosť dlahy. Už v tejto fáze sme tak zredukovali množstvo použitého materiálu. Takýto objekt bol pripravený na štrukturálnu analýzu pomocou pluginu Millipede pre softvéry Rhinoceros a Grasshopper.

Vďaka nej sme dokázali vypočítať presné hodnoty ohybov, zaťažení a priebehu síl v škrupine. Tento postup zatiaľ negeneroval hotovú geometriu pre 3D tlač. Získali sme však infor‐ mácie a hodnoty (línie prenosu síl a intenzity týchto síl na konkrétnych miestach), na základe ktorých vieme takúto tlačiteľnú geometriu generovať.

Thanks to the consultation with specialists of Invent Medical, we were able to set up the right system of forces and pressures acting on the shell of the splint. In our parti‐ cular case, it was necessary to fix and reinforce the foot in case of acci‐ dental encumbrance and secure it to avoid twisting and rotations in the ankle. We acted with forces on certain areas of the shell. The result was a parametric structural analysis.

Vďaka konzultácií s firmou Invent Medical sme dokázali nastaviť správne sily a zaťaženia pôsobiace na škrupinu dlahy. Pre náš konkrétny prípad sme potrebovali nohu fixovať a podporiť pri náhodnom došliapnutí na špičku, zabezpečiť ju voči ohybu v členku nahor a nadol a zamedziť náhodným rotáciám chodidla. Na koncové časti škrupiny (pri špičke a na lýtku) sme pôsobili tlakovými silami v správnych smeroch a intenzitách. Výsledkom bola parametrická štrukturálna analýza.

#Invent Medical

Computational design is about the transformation of parameters to forms and shapes using algorithms. We used the output of the structural analyses as inputs to generate the form in multiple layers.

The density of the structure reacts to the intensity of forces – pressure and bending in the splint shell.

The basic principle of computational design is the transformation of para‐ meters to forms and shapes using algorithms. Since this project was no different, we used the output of the structural analyses as inputs to generate the form in multiple layers.

The inner layer was created using a method consisting of wrapping the structure into a mesh volume. Smoo‐ thing of this mesh generates a form that appears as a delicate porous etched surface. The density of the structure reacts to the intensity of forces – pressure and bending in the splint shell. It is generated to be thicker and stronger where neces‐ sary, and on the contrary, thinner and more porous to spare the weight, reduce the use of material and achieve flexibility and breathability where possible.

Základným princípom výpočtového navrhovania (computational design) je transformácia dát na tvary pomocou algoritmov. Rovnakým postupom sme pracovali aj pri tomto zadaní. Dáta a parametre, ktoré sme získali cez štrukturálne analýzy, sme využili ako vstupy pre generovanie povrchu dlahy v niekoľkých vrstvách.

Vnútorná vrstva vznikla metódou obaľovania štruktúry meshovou geometriou. Následné vyhladzovanie meshu generuje formu, ktorá pôsobí ako jemná porézna leptaná plocha.

Hustota objemu v štruktúre reaguje na intenzitu zaťaženia, tlaku a ťahu v škrupine dlahy. Tá je hustejšia a pevnejšia v častiach, kde je to potrebné, naopak, šetríme hmotnosť a zabezpečujeme pružnosť a vetranie v častiach ktoré si môžeme dovoliť vyľahčiť.

The outer layer was generated as a transformation of curves describing the force-courses in the splint under the pressure. Ribbed structure formed by these curves reinforces the splint to the bending in the most important directions. In others, the structure keeps its flexibility to ensure comfort for the user.

Alongside the force-shaped ribs we generated other sets of ribbed struc‐ ture with various purposes. Perimeter of the splint is edged with the oval rib to ensure comfort without any padding. We also shaped the struc‐ ture itself to contain openings for elastic straps to fasten the splint when worn.

These openings are edged with the same type of ribs as the whole outer structure and are organically connected to them. The inner layer of the splint gives a space to these utili‐ tarian parts. The whole structure is thus generated as a one coherent unit.

Using physical simulations and analyses helped us to achieve high strength with minimal material use.

We created a splint that is not only anatomically and medically optimal, but also his lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.

Vonkajšia vrstva vznikla transformá‐ ciou dráh síl prechádzajúcich dlahou pod zaťažením. V líniách síl vytvárame rebrovanie, ktoré vystužuje dlahu voči ohybom v dôležitých smeroch.

V ostatných smeroch ostáva dlaha pružná, pohodlná a nositeľná bez špeciálneho polstrovania. Na vhodných miestach sme vytvorili otvory pre elastické pásiky na upnutie dlahy na nohu. Tieto otvory sa orga‐ nicky napájajú na funkčnú štruktúru dlahy. Vnútorná vrstva na základe parametrov ustupuje týmto utilitárnym častiam. Celá dlaha je tak generovaná ako jeden koherentný celok.

#Subdigital

Vďaka použitiu fyzikálnych analýz sme dokázali dlahu optimalizovať na vysokú pevnosť pri použití minimál‐ neho množstva materiálu. Vznikla tak dlaha, ktorá je nie len presne navr‐ hnutá pre anatómiu a potreby užíva‐ teľa, ale vďaka unikátnej estetike zodpovedá aj jeho hodnotám a život‐ nému štýlu.

3D PRINT Stage three

One3D materialized the designed structure of the splint made of solid, flexible and durable material. It was printed using polyamide powder PA2200 stiffened by the laser sinte‐ ring method. This material has ideal properties for such medical use – it is very solid and stiff, mechanically and chemically durable and safe in contact with the skin and food. From the designer’s point of view, it has great possibilities of use due the high detail of print – structural rib parts up to 2mm´s detail, shell structures up to 1.5mm thin with the smallest printable detail of 0.6mm. Thanks to these printing possibilities, we were able to work with high level of detail and aesthetic intricacy on the smallest scale. By optimizing the structure to the parameters of the material, we achieved a signifi‐ cant reduction of used material and printing time while maintaining all the desired properties of the splint.

3D tlač: Firma One3D realizovala tlač dlahy z pevného pružného a odolného materiálu. Na tlač bol použitý poly‐ amidový prášok PA2200 stužovaný metódou laserového sinteringu. Tento materiál má ideálne vlastnosti pre medicínske použitie– vysoká pevnosť a tuhosť, mechanická aj chemická odolnosť, bezpečnosť pre styk s pokožkou aj potravinami. Z dizajnér‐ skeho hľadiska ponúka široké možnosti využitia vďaka vysokému detailu tlače – prútové nosné časti až do detailu 2mm, škrupinové plochy až do hrúbky 1,5mm pri najmenšom tlačiteľnom detaile 0,6mm. Vďaka týmto možnos‐ tiam tlače sme mohli navrhovať aj tie najmenšie záhyby a venovať sa esteti‐ ckej kvalite aj na najmenšej mierke.

Optimalizáciou pre použitý materiál už vo fáze návrhu sa nám podarilo znížiť jeho množstvo a skrátiť čas tlače pri zachovaní požadovaných vlastností dlahy.

BRANDING Stage four

The last final touches of the design were produced by designer and artist Martin Mikulka from Banned Studios.

The fine black detail of the structure was prepared to be painted in order to follow the visual identity of the F*CK THEM creative house. This brand is currently working with the motives of fire and flames – the logo of F*CK THEM was visually set on fire. This final graphics layer turned the highly performative and ergonomic design into a fashionable merch accessory.

Záverečným krokom v procese bolo dotvorenie jemného detailu čiernej štruktúry dlahy dizajnérom Martinom Mikulkom z @banned_studios. Dizajn a povrchová úprava dlahy boli pripra‐ vené tak, aby vytvorili podklad pre vizuálnu identitu kreatívneho domu F*CK THEM. Tá aktuálne pracuje s motívmi plameňov a ohňa. Logo značky teda Martin pomyselne „zapálil“ a pridal tak poslednú grafickú a umeleckú vrstvu objektu. Dlaha sa tak stala značkovým módnym doplnkom.

SUMMARY We created an object which combines contemporary digital aesthetics of parametric design, high-performance medical design, technologies of 3D print and 3D scan together with fashion and art. This project is a perfect example of the potential of new tools and new approaches to design. In collabora‐ tion with teams of experts from Photoneo 3D Vision, Invent Medical and One3D, we created this unique product for F*CK THEM. Computational methods generating complex patterns, structures and materials are used for instance in sports fashion apparel (NIKE flyknit) for their performance. At the same time, they appear as concepts in haute couture for their unique contemporary visuality and artistic relevance (Iris van Herpen, Neri Oxman). This kind of contemplation between technology and art is very close to our values, so we gladly combined it with the 3D scanning and precise 3D printing to produce this high-performance fashion accessory that serves as medical device.

Zhrnutie: Vytvorili sme objekt, v ktorom sa súčasná digitálna estetika generatívnych tvarov prepletá s highperformance medicínskym dizajnom, technológiami 3D tlače a skenovania, módou a umením. Projekt dlahy je skvelou ukážkou potenciálu nových nástrojov a nových prístupov k dizajnu.

Vďaka spolupráci tímov odborníkov z Photoneo3D, Invent Medical a One3D sa nám podarilo pre F*CK THEM vytvoriť unikátny produkt.

Výpočtové metódy generujúce zložité vzory, štruktúry a materiály môžeme sledovať napríklad v športovej móde pre ich funkčnosť (napr. NIKE flyknit).

Zároveň sa však ako koncepty objavujú v haute-couture pre ich unikátnu súčasnú vizualitu a umeleckú rele‐ vanciu (napr. Iris van Herpen, Neri Oxman). Týmito hodnotami sa riadime aj v našej tvorbe, preto sme radi prepojili výpočtovýé navrhovanie s 3D skenovaním tela a presnou 3D tlačou.

Spoločne s partnermi a s užívateľom sme tak vytvorili high-performance módny doplnok, ktorý je zároveň medicínskou pomôckou.
