COMMUNITY REPORT
It’s hard to believe what has happened since writing this report 12 months ago. Firstly, we had a (nearly) full season, we were able to get out to our Clubs and schools, welcome back our members and supporters and, most importantly, appear in two Grand Finals. A lot can change in a year.

WHEELCHAIR AFL
2021 saw the launch of the West Australian Wheelchair Football competition. Played on a basketball court with goalposts at either end, WA Wheelchair Football involves teams of five facing off against each other with two defenders, two forwards, and one midfielder. A handball in Wheelchair Football is equivalent to a ‘kick’ and an underarm throw equates to a ‘handball’ as per regular Australian Football rules. Teams can be mixed gender, including a blend of players with and without a disability, making it an attractive sport for everyone to participate in. The competition is an opportunity for people with and without disabilities to play in a unified competition. Local City of Vincent resident and Club volunteer, Rob Divincenzo has given his time weekly throughout the year and has been a key supporter of the competition launch. Subiaco, East Perth and Swan Districts signed up to be the first to compete in this inclusive and skilful game with Subiaco a dominant force in the competition.
CAREER GUIDANCE
We were proud to offer work experience positions again to SEDA in 2021. We hosted two Fremantle Dockers Sports Development Programs at our facility and had a student commence work experience one day per week during the school year. We also offered work experience for university and high school students throughout the year, providing an insight into a professional sporting organisation.
RECOGNITION
Subiaco Football Club recognises that volunteers are a vital part of our sport and for the second year has run the ‘Quest Apartment Hotels Volunteer of the Month’ Program, to promote and reward the many hard-working volunteers at the Subiaco Football Club and Junior Clubs within the Subiaco District. Congratulations to our winners in 2021; • Renae Munford (Kingsley Junior Football Club) • Michelle Germano (Stirling Junior Football Club) • Tanya Maddafari-Hayward (Stirling Junior Football Club) • Ann Lord (Carine Junior Football Club)
CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
The Containers for Change initiative has been widely used across the State to raise money for charities and sporting Clubs. Since setting up our collection bin we have been refunded $688.36. We encourage our supporters to keep your recyclable containers and donate them to the Club, whilst also doing your bit for the environment.
CHARITY:
PROSTATE CANCER FOUNDATION
We hosted the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) at our Men’s Health Round on 26 June. In the lead up our players, coaches and staff were encouraged to do 45 sit ups per day for every Aussie man diagnosed with the disease, daily. As a Club we raised over $1000. At the President’s luncheon we heard from Amy Botterill - Community Network Manager PCFA and former SFC President, Board member at PCFA and prostate cancer survivor Neil Randall about the disease’s impacts on our community and how increasing awareness will reduce the number diagnosed, especially in younger men. “With thanks to the support of the Subiaco Football Club, we are kicking goals for WA men and families impacted by prostate cancer. More than 2,000 WA men are hit by prostate cancer each year. Subiaco Football Club’s efforts to raise awareness and funds have been first class, allowing us to fund more research, help more families, and save more lives. We are tremendously proud of our long-standing association and deeply grateful to the Club’s leaders, members, players, families, and fans.” Amy Botterill.
PROST! INC.
We have opened the doors of our gym to the team from PROST! Inc. for the ninth year. PROST! is a not-for-profit organisation that provides professionally guided exercise training and support to men during Prostate Cancer treatment, to optimise preparation and recovery.
BUSHFIRES SUPPORT
At our Good Friday Match, the Club donated all proceeds (just over $500) from Carlton Dry sales on the day to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund for the Wooroloo and Hills Bushfire Appeal.
CLUB ENGAGEMENTS:
NAIDOC ROUND
NAIDOC Round sponsored by Spartan First and the City of Vincent saw us host the Perth Football Club. Thank you Des Headland, Daniel and Jonathon Garlett, Kevin Bynder, Bindi Bindi Dreaming, Six Season Coffee, Binar Sports and Seven Seasons Gin for assisting with the running of the day and offering a cultural experience for all who attended. Local residents gained free entry thanks to the City of Vincent.
LADIES DAY
On a beautiful Saturday in August, 120 members, supporters and partners enjoyed an afternoon of bubbles, canapes and footy at our annual Ladies Day. They were treated to the talented Matt Debaro on guitar and the Reserves players serving cocktails at half time. Gift bags, sponsored by Global Roaming Pilbara Foundation, were filled with vouchers from Mecca, Snap Fitness, FuMoso and many more. Raffle prizes were generously donated by Cygnet Bay Pearls, Matusik Jewellers and Bria Work Style. The event is getting bigger and better and we can’t wait to see what next year brings.
