Playgrounds Festival
20 + 22 + 23 November
Welcome to Playgrounds Digital Arts Festival 2012!
— Every year we are surprised by the huge positive response we receive after every edition. It gives us the energy to do it again. By the fact that you are joining us and the more than kind presence of some of the brightest creative minds in the world, we are sure we will make a great edition once again. This year we chose the slogan 'Cut the Crap', because we really like a nononsense attitude. It also refers to the political climate in the Netherlands. A lot is changing. There's a constant fear of losing money.Great people are losing their jobs and we are losing our brand as the world's most tolerant country. That sucks. Cut the crap is about making the best out of it. Pick up those pieces, glue them back together and find some new shapes while you're at it. Meet some nice, inspiring people, have a beer, share ideas, listen to good music, make great stuff and enjoy doing it. Don't focus on money or crazy politicians, but stay put on your inspirations and enthusiasm. Cut the crap and make the best out of it. Thank you for making this possible and we hope you will enjoy Playgrounds! Cheers! Leon van Rooij and the Playgrounds team :) and Submarine Channel.

— Alex Trochut is Barcelona’s number one graphic designer and illustrator. A few examples of companies he works for are The Guardian, Coca Cola, Converse and The Rolling Stones. Alex won several awards i.a. an ADC Young Gun and a CQ Award. His first jobs after school were with Toormix and Vasava, perfect places for him to explore, refine and deploy his magical typographic skills. Thriving in intense merging of typography, lettering and illustration, he has created a style of his own. His work has gained him a great reputation in the design industry. Alex has the ability to use existing typefaces and manipulate them in a way that makes them feel unique, fresh and spontaneous. His work is rich with elegant, brilliantly detailed executions that simultaneously convey indulgence and careful, restrained control. Alex is driven by a desire to constantly evolve, which can be seen in his eidetic body of work.

— Antfood is a creative audio studio that composes music, sound design and experiences for popular media. Their talented team of creators and producers realize audio solutions that tell stories, evoke emotion and drive campaigns. They like to work unconventional and are in their element with squirming, analog-tape leeches, moaning coeds, screaming guitar goats, and brain-exploding psychedelia. Work by Antfood includes Good Books 'Metamorphosis', spots for Google and the F5 Opening Titles (for which they teamed up with Buck). Over the years Antfood has collected several awards like the Art Director’s Club Young Guns 9 award and Best Original Music at the Ciclope International Advertising Craft Festival in Buenos Aires. Speakers at Playgrounds are Wilson Brown and Sean McGovern. Wilson is a creative director, composer and multimedia artist. Sean is vital to the management and execution of Antfood's projects. — The Daniels are Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. They make absurd music videos, adverts and short films. The duo is best known for music videos for the bands FM Belfast, The Shins and Foster the People as well as the viral video, ‘Dogboarding’. Kwan and Scheinert consider themselves interchangeable, which fits in with their mixture of live action and animation, and the sense of humor apparent in both their films and personae. This is what Scheindert said about The Hundreds in the Hands video ‘Pigeons’: “We have a reputation for being special effects guys, but we're like an effects artist's nightmare because we make things up as we go. While 3D animation is usually all about this mathematical precision of creating detailed dropshadows and back reflections, we just wanted to see if we could make a girl throw up fireworks.” We don’t think the Daniels will throw up fireworks at Playgrounds, but we can’t promise.

— David Wilson is a London-based artist and director who is a regular guest at Playgrounds. Coming from an illustration background, David first started getting recognition for his work with his music video for Moray McLarens We Got Time, in which he was able to achieve live in-camera animation combined with live action via an old animation device called a Praxiniscope. Since then he has developed his music video directorial skills in ever-shifting ways; creating acclaimed videos for artists such as We Have Band, The Maccabees, Japanese Popstars, Metronomy and David Guetta. Most recently, David was responsible for creating IKEA’s latest UK TV commercial, where he brought flat-pack Swedish home furnishings to life through a variety of hand drawn, physical and CG animation effects. David is giving an exclusive workshop at BKKC on Friday 23rd at 10.30. All information and obligatory registration at www.bkkc.nl/davidwilson.

So of course, it was no problem when we asked her to fly to Tilburg for Playgrounds to come tell all about her first steps on Max&Co in Switzerland. And about the time when she moved to London to design the characters of Fantastic Mr.Fox, directed by Wes Anderson. And about her first short film ‘Je Maudis Ma Nuit’, a dreamy black and white film, a mix of live action and stop motion animation. And about the time she did character design for Aardman and Laika House. Yes, we are very happy she is willing to step into that plane again, because we are very anxious to hear her stories.

— Floris Kaayk (1982) developed a fascination for the world of insects, evolution, technology and dark futuristic visions . These themes form the basis for his animated nature documentary "The Order Electrus" he made in 2005. His second shortfilm, Metalosis Maligna (2006) is a fictional documentary about a disease which happens to people with a medical implant in their bodies. Both films were rewarded with several awards. In 2010 he finished The Origin of Creatures, in which Kaayk presents a post-apocalyptic worlds, with silent mutated body parts as residents. The Origin of Creatures won 9 festival awards and was picked as the Dutch entry for the Academy Awards 2011. His latest project called Human Birdwings tells the story of Jarno Smeets (played by Floris Kaayk). A young man who had the universal dream about flying like a bird. By taking advantage of the DIY revolution, he designed a haptic flapping wing-system which made it possible to fly like a bird. This very well-prepared social media-project was covered all over the world and millions of people saw the first flight of Jarno. Floris Kaayk became the first (F)lying Dutchman in the best online hoax ever.

— Not too long after graduating from the Royal College of Art in London, designer and director Henry Hobson created a series of commercials for the BBC that got him on the radar of Prologue, Kyle Cooper's studio. Hobson was ‘snapped up and transported out to L.A.’ where he worked as a creative director and graphic designer on a series of distinctive title sequences that combined old school analogue handiwork with cuttingedge digital techniques, including Rango, The Walking Dead, Robin Hood, Fright Night and Sherlock Holmes. In 2010 Hobson left Prologue to pursue other creative avenues with a live action emphasis. He directed a viral teaser for Resistance 3, and lately titles for Snow White and The Huntsman. Hobson is currently busy working on prepping his first two feature film directing projects: Maggie, a tough emotional zombie drama, and Caves of Steel, a sci-fi film at Fox based on a book by Isaac Asimov.

— Huoratron is the brainchild of electronic music producer Aku Raski who started it as a musical project in 2002 and then adopted the name himself. Huoratron is in his own world, composing deep, hard, techno beats that are loved by both heavy metal fans and punk kids. His high-energy sound can only be rivaled by the energy of the crowd. Huoratron learned his trade when he began dissecting the sounds from Gameboys and transforming them into a sound no one has laid their ears on. Although he’s no longer using Gameboys to craft his sound, Huoratron produces the kind of music that makes people purge their inner feelings to become one with the sound. His album doesn’t fall short of that description. ‘Cryptocracy’ will have you wanting to thank the mad scientist himself.

— Job, Joris & Marieke are Job Roggeveen, Joris Oprins and Marieke Blaauw. They met during their study at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 2007 they founded their studio in Utrecht. When they start a project they always work together on the concept and the design. When they have decided which technique to use, they divide the work. It's an organic process in which they all have a share. Roughly speaking; Joris and Marieke work on the animation and storytelling and Job works on the illustrations and music. Their work varies from music videos and book illustrations to animation series and infomercials. For instance, they have worked for Top Notch, T-Mobile and KPN. Recently they made the most played music video ever ( in the Netherlands) : 'Ik neem je mee' by Gers Pardoel. 21.40 In Amsterdam, the trio takes part in the Young NL Talent Talk Show at 21.15.

In 2009, for a school project, Versteeg created an alternative title sequence for Sean Penn's road movie Into The Wild, which got him on the radar of motion design blogs worldwide, including Watch the Titles. For his graduation project in 2011 Versteeg focused all his energy on title design, which culminated in another fictitious title sequence, this time for a documentary about title design. With ‘A History Of The Title Sequence’ Versteeg won the 2012 Vimeo Award in the Motion Graphics category. He recently founded his own creative studio in Rotterdam: From Form.

DIRECTORS TITLES PLAYGROUNDS 2012
Thursday 22 November 013 Dommelsch Zaal 10:25
— This year the titles are made by Jordi Pages, who has been working as a 3D designer with arts and technology collective Seeper for the past few years. He comes from Spain, but is now living in London. One of the recent projects he did was an experimental animation called ‘Ments’ which is the Catalan word for minds. Jordi likes to give Catalan names to all projects, like a little stamp. He is now freelancing, mostly in London and looking for more exciting projects. “There are some really talented people working out there and I would like to meet them all to share and learn, and while on the journey, develop myself as a designer and create my own style.” In collaboration with Gabor Ekes and MRK Jordi teamed up to produce the main titles for Playgrounds 2012. We are very honoured with this! Together with the audience, we will see the titles for the first time, so we are very looking forward to Jordi's latest project.

Based on Stephen Kinzer's book ‘All the Shah's Men’, Operation Ajax reveals how the battle for black gold in the Arab world broke out long before WWII, culminating in 1953 in the incredible but true history of the CIA plot to stage a coup of Iran’s government. With the help of Kinzer, Cognito Comics adapted these historical events into a cinematic reading experience in ten chapters. Supported by a full film score, the user swipes his way through subtly and functionally animated cartoons. —O n May 4th, seemingly out of nowhere appears ‘Remember’, the debut release of Raveyards, sending shivers of cold stone excitement throughout the online video and music communities. Imagine William S. Burroughs writing a scenario for a David Cronenberg-directed Nine Inch Nails video featuring Magnetic Man, and you’re halfway close to the blitzkrieg that is ‘Remember’. Nocturnal, grim, shrouded in darkness, industrial, feverish, violently graphic - that goes for both the mesmerizing tune and the vivid imagery.

—Z ombie Nation is a German techno/electro project of the Munich based DJ and producer Florian Senfter (a.k.a. Splank!). The first Zombie release contained the unsuspecting song Kernkraft 400, which was based on part of David Whittaker’s music from the 1984 Commodore 64 game Lazy Jones. A licensed re-make of that song landed in top ranking chart positions all over the world and has been used as a popular goal-celebration song at NHL, soccer, rugby and basketball games. But Zombie Nation has released more great albums since then and is among the most successful live acts in electronic music. “Working for the perfect moment” is how Splank! still describes his work with Zombie Nation. “Get the best out of every single live moment and prove it again and again in every new situation.”

Playgrounds Awards
Tilburg Awards Friday 23 November De NWE Vorst 20:30
—E very year we hand out the Playgrounds Awards for best digital achievement. So forget about Sundance, Cannes and Berlin, it doesn’t get any better than this. But don’t expect glitter and glamour, it’s all about showing respect to those providing us with the best visual pleasure. An award, a handshake from the festival director Leon van Rooij and last but not least: an overwhelming applause by the audience. That’s it. No crap, but a lot of R.E.S.P.E.C.T. The five categories are:
- Best Dutch Motion Design
- Best International Independent
- Best International Short Applied
- Best National Short Student
- Best Short Local
* The Playgrounds Awards are not entry-based. Nominated work is only chosen by a jury of people with an industry or art background.
