From the desk of the editor, Thank you for picking up the latest issue of Submissions Magazine, the only art and literary magazine on campus curated, designed, and run entirely by an interdisciplinary group of students. Graphic designers, literature majors, new media kids, and art history enthusiasts have all lent a hand in putting out this magazine. With each issue comes new challenges. We are constantly asking ourselves how we can choose the work that best represents the talent and creativity at Purchase College. This isn’t always clear, and often we are unable to publish all of the art and writing that we would like to. However, being a publication open to students of any major certainly helps in terms of representing the campus community. We’re also always looking for feedback, so if you would like to get involved or just voice your opinion about the magazine, please do join us Monday nights at 10:00. On a very important side note, we are happy to announce that Submissions Magazine has made the switch to ecofriendly printing practices. The magazine that you are currently holding has been printed on chlorine free, 100% post-consumer waste paper made using biogas energy and has been printed with nontoxic inks produced with wind power. In an age of digital publication, we must remember that print is a luxury. We print for permanence. We print to create things for us to hold and enjoy, to keep and look at when we like. Please keep these intentions in mind, and if you decide that you would not like to keep this magazine, please place it back in the magazine rack or dispose of it responsibly in the recycling bin. All the best,
Lindsey Sieber Editor-in-Chief

Beckoning By Aiden Hamid Beckoning to me From beyond, I am sure of it She said to me “look” and like a fool I saw instead But who Can resist her call? The temptation: tempting me away The outcome: predictable, but not definitive... “Beautiful day”, (do you need me?) “Huh?”, Like a fool because my sense of clarity is already vague in and of itself Love is veiled and this makes me capable of accepting her; Though I know what’s beyond from the beyond; Already I’ve seen her so Naked She wasn’t even wearing skin. But it’s no matter, once you hear her Start to hum Like a machine you thought had outlived its use She’s inside me now, her vibration drawing me in closer, closer and a cold fish is squirming off the end of a shining silver hook; Drowning in fresh air Possessed - and yet, the irrational That I still have a choice pains me because What can you choose when love offers you of herself?

There is “no” choice, but then there is The Hope: That she fills you more often than she exhausts you; that she prefers Behold The quivering musculature of your heart Rather than Open it up and cast a scorching light upon those fleshy, bottom-feeding weaknesses That you are well aware of but which you have effectively buried or masked or momentarily put aside or Forgotten. And then the scales tip. ... A sunken virtue Beckoning to me From beyond, I am sure of it She is singing, Though she should be drowning as I left her.

The Search for Noah’s Ark By Gillian Lynn Katz
Was the ark made out of gopher a wood so strange, buried in the Elburz range? Or was it hidden under a snow-capped peak hundreds of feet upon Mount Ararat? Up, thirteen thousand feet archeologists climbed step by frozen step.
SUB MAG NO. 63
A team of Texas archeologists looked for clues historians had missed, to find the remains of Noah’s wooden ark and bring scripture out of the dark.
If they’d discovered the remains of Noah’s ark and managed to bring scripture out of the dark, would explorers stop scaling these ice-capped peaks?

Rita Rains on The Big Easy By Gillian Lynn Katz On a downtown New Orleans avenue the gray high-rises echo. A silver van stands parked near the sidewalk. On the street a lone man stands half-naked, in a red bathing suit with white flowers. He raises his arms skywards, outstretched, palms upwards; his face towards the grey-white sky.

Réflexion Déformée; catching a glimpse of oneself in a storefront window Vera Kuznetsova
Uprooted from this soviet soil, fingers unfurled and reaching for a wisp, histoire, Tranquility dissolved; en fume, emanencing, To find a home, a “pодина” In the divine décolletage. Mother, mère mother may I burrow in that fragrant core. Behind a door, Venus infers- a darkness sweet, familiar. Embraced body, displacing mind Topography en face and time, wandering Lost; like marks of birth down slopes of physiognomy. Eroding time this canyon carves a visage foreign; incomplete. And soiled roots, Soviet wispsMuddle histoire, identité. Yet in the burrows of the furs Finds darknesssweet, familiar. • pодина: “Motherland” in Russian • all other italicized words are French

Them Chris Sommerfeldt “It’s actually U.S. law.” What a brilliant statement. It’s as if by those marble chiseled words alone you’re entitled to project onto the world whatever star-spangled dollars and donuts you please. “They want to kill us.” Another terrific one. Fear is a powerful tool in the hands of any blood-cleanser eager to strike the blunt hammer of privilege against the fragile skulls of the oppressed. The next day takes “at least 34.” The elephants get in line to stomp dust, ready, eager even, to charge at a terrified Orpheus, who is no longer trying to revive, just to escape. It’s not that there’s no bloodlust. It’s that it’s attributed to “them,” that naked tree among forests that denies the right – no, the existence – of leaves. Full tank for all bulldozers, please. It’s already beginning: the apocalyptic irony

The Hills of Never Ginger Tran
How Does the Earth Sleep under the all The raucous of my feet How do we not Already have a grasp on that Core we swell from, Like opening plump peaches’ Meat How does the horizon Skillfully line up with my Distant self, Binoculars or microscopes in need How do I not grasp the wrong Bit of air, And fall asunder, To be blissfully blown away, The hills of Never. Nodding towards a gentler peace? There is a dandeLion And there is just my name – Two syllables I repeat.

Hunger Ginger Tran The faint leak of light. The electricity that hums. The bathroom so cold. The winter is fragile. Broken trees And white humility. Breath like frost, Windows are adventure. Each Drop Frozen. Snowflakes. None of them the same. A cloud, Maybe three, They manufacture This morning. The little cry Before the stove fire Ignites. Like a flaming Flower. Lonely blossom. I sip on my tea As the sky watches Me. Naked. Bear. No cub, Just a little yellow scarf.
