What are the Five Fs? The Principle of Five Fs is an idea that a people can find balance in their lives by focusing their actions and energy on five key areas while recognizing how each of these areas relate to one or more of the others. Let’s face it, with everything we have to manage like work and school, friends and service projects, and money and health, it can seem like if we put too much focus on one thing, all the other things suffer.
Life is more than a series of continuous tasks; it is a balancing act. Imagine a 4-way teeter totter, where the weight of each item is not evenly distributed. If too much focus is put towards finances, then not enough focus will be allowed for family, fitness, or fulfillment. Furthermore, everything should be tied together with faith (or whatever one’s core values and beliefs are).
These are the principles of Five Focus planning.
FAITH Faith means different things to different people. Whether we consider ourselves
religious or spiritual, most of us have strong beliefs of core values that are important to us. Some of us may be weaker in our faith than others, and we have the desire to grow in that faith or share those core values. Making time for faith-based activities is one thing that can help keep us grounded, which is why it is included in the principles of Five Fs.
FAMILY Your family doesn't have to be exclusive to those who live in the same house with you. Family doesn't even have to be related to you, as long as they relate WITH you. I consider my friends an extension of my family, and I have many different family circles. I have my biological family, my work family, my church family and my planner community. Family (and friends) are the people who love and accept you for who you are, and planning time with them or special events for them is just one of the principles of Five Fs.
FINANCES One of my favorite Dave Ramsey quotes is "A budget is telling your money where to go, instead of wondering where it went." I think most of us have been guilty of "wondering" at some point in our lives. But by focusing on our finances, we'll always know where our money is. So, where is your money going?
FITNESS Working out, eating well, and staying hydrated are all associated with physical fit-
ness. But emotional and mental fitness are just as important. Fitness should be about the entire body, not just the legs and abs. This is the only body and mind we're going to get in this life. How about we treat it well?
FULFILLMENT Some people have this idea that doing for themselves is selfish. And in some cases, that might be true. But sometimes, you have do what's going to make you feel the most fulfilled - write a book, run a marathon, backpack through Europe. Because in the words of Wayne Dyer, "It is what you haven't done that will torment you." What are you doing for you? How are you fulfilling your deepest passions and making your dreams a reality?
MONTHLY DASHBOARD 1. Choose one of the Five Fs to be the primary focus for this month. Which area of your life can use the most attention at this time? 2. After selecting your primary focus, write down what your specific goal is that you want to achieve this month relating to this area. 3. Identify any action items that need to be taken in order to achieve that goal. 4. Continue this pattern on the following page until all Five Fs have a goal and a list of action items. 5. Review these lists throughout the month to mark off any completed action items.
