01 about_ I have lived in five different cities and three different countries that have shaped my identity and my approach to design. I have become a sponge; always a student eager to learn, explore, and challenge the boundaries.

landscape architecture studio with _ fernando.turpin
[Magnetic attraction] frames a spatial intervention and an habitat introduction to re-calibrate the movements and nesting sites for sandhill cranes. Pine Castle bombing range and its peripheral site is a collision zone where micro-controlled military regimes collide with unpredictable bird migration patterns. By embodying this dynamic relationship, the atmospheric volume engages with the landscape in a choreographic system of habitat growth cycles. Florida’s exaggerated landscape is molded and reshaped by re-routing existing military regimes connected to pine-castle bombing range, to strategically bomb ‘ideal’ zones, creating ideal habitats for the sandhill-crane population in central Florida. Controlled fire is then, introduced into the landscape to maintain the “attractive” landscape for sandhill cranes.
_ fabrication AND landscape manipulation The Landscape originates from the Ocala region. Through the aid of grasshopper, ideal territory conditions such as marsh land and open prairie were located and proximities were determined to highlight targets for bombing. Areas between two bodies of water are then bombed through the rerouting military rounds creating water channels. Through displacement points, the mounds are formed, planted with vegetation, and maintained through burning. Multiple models were created experimenting with subtle landscape gradients, and manipulating the CNC machine to represent different landscape conditions, as well as overlapping boundaries.
_ phases of operations phase one _ Using grasshopper proximities, land between bodies of scattered water marshes are bombed through re-calibrated military pathways, creating water channels that serve as networks for the sandhill crane. phase two _ with the extraction, the mounds then are formed and planted with appropriate vegetation to sustain and provide ideal conditions for the sandhill cranes. phase three _ the vegetation is then maintained through controlled burning.
Three year Ocala Marshland_Dormant to Activated succession plan
Three year Ocala forest burning, restoration, and clustered delineation plan.
_ Land gradients The landscape becomes a living system of cycles constantly rotating between burning cycles, planting cycles, and habitat regenerations. The mounds. There is no end result, this new landscape always changes, shifts, ans adapts to accommodate the sandhill crane.

A empty lawn surrounded by social and artistic entities. A program-less area that adapts to the needs of students utilizing it. Madison Bowl, located slightly north of ‘the lawn’ at the University of Virginia, has many different uses, from soccer fields, to shortcuts. The Maker-Nest provides a space where ideas can be born, and nurtured until ready to be shared. It is a space for experimentation and prototypes. A space occupied by curiosity, the nest is a transparent creative zone for students. The form is generated from its surroundings, embodying all branches of existing pathways. The ribbons grow from the grown nesting all programs.
05 re-fabricated paradise_ gordan matta clark + domestic natures
A place where one watches television. A place of connection with the world. A place in-between two spaces. A space where multiple people gather. The Paradise is challenged as we view the landscape as manipulated clay forming it to our needs. The suburban grid is formed and natural vegetation is added constructing a layered utopia with hidden imperfections. What lies behind the creme shutters and white picket fence. Re-fabricated Paradise challenges the normal, tame standards of typical suburban living. All of the qualities of a living-room are stripped leaving only the direct meaning of the word “living. The couch, television, and the coffee table have been removed making room for a organic machine that captures the essence of activities that we much rather hide.

While the frame of the original house remains the same, it has become engulfed with a new identity.
The identity of the original skeleton disappears as the new veil form starts to re-establish its own definition to the term of a “home
_ suburban manipulations The design takes Gordon Matta Clark’s house and introduces a organic membrane that becomes a true identity of not only the immediate but also the distant activities. By collecting censored data through movements of the ‘suburban’ neighborhood, the membrane becomes a beacon of the truth that lies behind blue shutters and white picket fences. It highlights the imperfections hidden behind the copy and paste lifestyle of suburban living. The membrane harbors the idea of a imperfect suburban neighborhood and generates a oasis that situates all hidden burdens of the community. Layer one / the suburban grid is formed, manipulating all things natural and introducing a strict grid and copy+paste dwellings. Layer two / with removed vegetation, artificiality is re-introduced allowing for scene of nature. Layer three / within the grid, selected locations are chosen to house the ‘growth.’ These forms will then represent its immediate surrounding characters.

culture lab identity of skins_with k.johannes + o.monroe +a.green Can armor be a cage? Can a cage become a protective armor? Is the second skin a form of protection from the exterior or is it fragmented way to continue the internal? Fragmented Enclosure is a series of containment prototypes constructed to study relationships between predictable controls and unpredictable natures. Is it better to completely cage elements or to embrace the “free spirit within? Multiple studies were constructed to better understand the relationships between the object, the mold, and the interacts that occur between them. Same form. Same body. A second skin is introduced. An armor that contours the natural figure. This forged defense responds emotionally and physically to the body. A firm shell keeps the spine upright and unable to freely move. Vulnerability is masked and the identity within is expressed.

Inspired by the metaphorical qualities of a cloud, the design for this laboratory is focused on creating a free moving floor plan within a translucent cloud and a celebrated circulation. Cherokee Farm, a research park near the University of Tennessee lacks any sense of identity and attraction. We wanted to expand the audience of visitors to the community by introducing moments of collaboration and transparency between scientists and the community of Knoxville. The “Cloud” has a double enclosure system. A curtain wall on the interior is surrounded by a perforated aluminum facade to minimize heat gain while embodying the cloud aesthetic.. Perforations of the facade vary according to levels of sight. While it does keep much of the sun out, the views onto the Tennessee river are not obstructed. Multiple layers of transparency and identity is reinforced with a celebrated circulation system. Yellow stair “tunnels” circulate along the exterior of the building. Although hidden by the secondary facade during daytime, at night the light illuminates the area.

From a simple rectangular form an immediate response was made by pushing back the ground floor envelope to create inviting spaces. Our next focus was the location of the core and circulation. In addition to the circulation there are moments within the floor plate in which Simultaneous responses were made by creating a secondary facade as well as creating a celebrated circulation zone on the exterior. The blue represents “pop-out zones in which the interior penetrates within the cloud .

07 Thesis_Border identities_ ongoing self-directed thesis /
Borders exist through many outlets and are results after many handshakes. The Pakistan-India border is a no-mans land currently occupied by watch towers, military pawns, and farmers effected by a one mile buffer occupied by the Indian military and displaced farmlands. what if the border, rather than being a dividing wall, became a zone of dual conditions, that provided stability for those originally displaced. The border, an antagonist frequently causes cultural disturbances, displacing the existing normalities. What if the border, rather than being a ‘no-mans’ land only occupied by military agents, transforms into a thriving society ran by those it displaced. A conversation of national identity, displacements and an economy generated from temporary occupations.

_ Studies of blur of spatial collisions Spatial collisions are speculative episodes at an infrastructure scale analyzing the hybrid flux of border zones and the changing ‘titles’ of the agents as they travel through thresholds. Boundaries exist as gradients, slowly changing in character.
_ site agents A border zone that once divided a group of people causing mass migrations, and displacement. The no-mans land is a region between India and Pakistan. Occupants that activate the region include watch towers, artillery, restricted farmlands, partition nomads, and a heavily occupied fence. My investigation considers the border as a program magnet infrastructure that provides for its immediate surroundings. Program can vary as the influences of the border bleeds onto the landscape evolving into a necessity that not only supports its surrounds but becomes a necessity to communities near its frontier.

t h r i f t // a f a s h i o n s h o w THRIFT is a fashion show designed to encourage the re-fabrication of clothing. Students were allowed to choose from a collection of donated clothing and encouraged to alter, and add to it to created a unique collection. As one of the main creators of THRIFT, it has become a recurring event in our college. With the fashion show, a exhibit was included highlighting the process of each designer showing their concept, and the process from found items to their unique looks.
