VIDEO-NEST | YEAR II | SPRING 2016 A solemn space for making, the Video-nest embodied the beauty of making. Madison bowl, located at UVA became the home of the Nest. In an attempt to socially connect different archetypes of the college, the design gave not only opportunity for ones imagination to bloom, but it allowed for ideas to be shared and different techniques to be learned. Located at the University of Virginia Campus, the Video Nest harbors what once was Madison Bowl, a social ground used for sporting events, and informal activities. Madison bowl, even with its inviting appeal, becomes a barrier between the educational surrounding, and the social aspects of its site. I designed a nest with hopes of engaging all types of students and encouraging them to “make By creating a nest a new culture is born. A culture in which those who have passion of creating are provided with the materials and tools to make them.

VIDEO-NEST | ENGAGING INTENTIONS A nest was created with the metaphor of having a space in which ideas can be born, nurtured, and trained of until it was ready to be shared with the world. For a welcoming attitude, the maker-space “grows” from its surroundings by weaving or reflecting its natural counterpart. The “ribbons” become identity changers as they transform from walls, into domes. The Video-nest not only serves as a tool for creative individuals, but also frames the interior activity with its translucent barriers.

ARCHIVAL SUBCONSCIOUS | YEAR III | FALL 2016 An investigation revolving around human reactions towards daily interactions, and the “black box,” a ten second span of uncontrolled and forgotten conditions. Blur in relation to memory, is defined as the realm of uncertainty regarding all connections made during our lifetime. Blur Squared harbors the recalled memory. They are the significant moments in our lives. Blur Cubed, the last layer of memory is defined as the outside influences, both truth and lies that shape our understanding of a few of these “moments.” The introduced project required us to design an archive that sat on Pier 57, on the southwest edge of Manhattan. It hovers over the High-line, attracting wanders who just want to focus on their higher surroundings. With my base concepts of “Gravitation towards Danger”, “microscopic flesh”, and “control with consent”, a blur was created highlighting human tendencies and studying interactions that are ongoing within the blur.

ARCHIVAL SUBCONSCIOUS | RESPONSIVE ENVELOPES A study into a hyper-responsive exterior that communicates with the activity levels inside. In theory, the shell, composed of 1200 fiber wires, move with the information they are transforming. For example, at a constant state, the wires will appear tame with a singular motion. At times of high levels of movement, the wires will overreact. This is a form of transparency in which the skin might not appear transparent, yet the wires create a readable shell.

ARCHIVAL SUBCONSCIOUS | Section view of memory sequences and types of subconscious interactions.

ARCHIVAL SUBCONSCIOUS | FLOOR PLAN ABSTRACTION A exploration into the floorplan and its arrangement in relation to the microfiber shell. The sequences show how the opposing components are in dialogue with one another, connected visually, and technologically through the wires that transmit subconscious data.

17

ARCHIVAL SUBCONSCIOUS | GREEN-WAY PERSPECTIVE A magnet for those thrill seekers who gravitate toward the unknown. An experiment of sight, body, and mind, Archival Subconscious becomes an adapting, self reflecting machine consisting of multiple scenarios in which the human becomes the subject of interest. The beauty lies within the moments of interaction between opposing sequences. A glass escalator purging through a gallery floor and roof, a soundless space transitioning into mega-data of memory. The beauty is the unknown, and the archive consists of every reaction towards those unknowns to better understand the human subconscious and its tendencies. Series of connections, relating the human mind to the image, to the surroundings, to the meta-data. This abstraction diagram, represents the process in which Archival Subconscious operates on.

BLURRED BIO-POLITICS | YEAR III | SPRING 2016 It sits within the layers of the iceberg with a timer lasting roughly three years. Thats how long I have. Like myself, it inherits alternative identities. Always in motion, always transfiguring, always responding to immediate conditions. Our journey started off the coast of Byen Tasiilaq, Greenland, a previously secluded oasis that has recently transformed into a morphing landscape due to global warming. For my journey within, I hold no power towards my path. I follow the currents, the sacrifice made when I choose to inhibit it. My time here is about to end, as my shelter has disintegrated into abyss. This body I inhibit seems foreign as my identities become obscured. My contraption will dwell within the dunes of White Sands, a similar appearance but different construction. The white blizzard will veil the truth that lies inside. With my multiple realities, a blur effect happens with rivalry between reality and perception.

21

BLURRED BIO-POLITICS | CLIENT IDENTITY I woke up as Ameili today. Dark hair, approximately five feet and four inches tall, manicured nails, and a slight blurred vision. There lies no definite pattern towards my mythical condition. Identities come and go. Typically, my characters revisit my body, yet on occasion, a unfamiliar stranger inhibits me. I dwell within my own creation, hoping to eventually infiltrate into the deepest sanctuary, and learn how to control this condition. Dissociative Identity Disorder is the scientific name, yet I define myself to have “Blurred bio-politis, a gift rather, where my body, my identities are in constant conflict for domination. I am sure of my gift. The world perceives it as a disease, a abnormality most likely caused by some childhood trauma to justify my insanity. I am sane. It was the world that secluded me, thus triggering my pursuit to find beauty within a publicly recognized malfunction. The reality that surrounds me, the moments that allude to my past, have become a blur. This is why i am required to construct my own truth, my own justification of my legitimacy.

TRAVEL NEPAL | YEAR III | DECEMBER 2016 Over the winter holidays, I had the opportunity to travel to Nepal. The significance of this trip was justified through the eyes that i gained through out my years in design school. Over my month long journey, I experienced the cultures of Nepali society, the stereotypes within the culture, the strong sense of segregation, and the natural appreciation towards daily rituals. During my stay, I had the opportunity to visit multiple Hindu temples, visit historic sites effected by the 2015 earthquake, and travel to Galkot, Nepal, a region that is under transition between rural typologies, and incoming infrastructure. Between visits, I witnessed purity within the chaos. A single moment in which car horns were muted, over population disappeared, and where the light hit the dust vanishing all signs of pollution. The following moments were the seconds in which the destructive history of this country was forgotten, and where the silver lining became visible.

25

SINGULAR SOLACE | A split moment exhibiting the rare peace on the roads of Kathmandu. Poverty, destruction, pollution, segregation, is all forgotten as the driver races to leave the imprints of the city, towards the indescribable essence of nature.

[IN] ORGANIC SUBSTANCE | numerous vending stalls populate and abandon this temple entrance daily. For survival, many people must travel long distances, sacrifice happiness and freedom, to assure their kids of a better future. The owner of this stall walks three miles daily to set up her stall. Her sacrifices are justified through the education of her two daughters who she hopes harbors a brighter future than her own.

27

Top Left | SYMBOLIC HOPE | a single bell rings and vibrates, standing out among the hundred that follow. One single vibration symbolizes a granted wish, a sorrowful mourn, and a peaceful thanks. Top Right | [UN]INHABITED | could it represent the basic example of Urban Sprawl? A abandoned home is neighbored by two small shops, a jeep park, and a howling river. Traces of inhabitance is obscured as it degrades into the reality of the technology age.

A COMMUNITY UNTOUCHED | In this small monastery outside of Kathmandu, the realities of the modernized culture is nonexistent. The beauties of daily lives is appreciated as these kids are taught and trained to live a peaceful life with a focus on self, the environment, and to better the community. The two boys pictured are in dialogue with a group of ladies tending the garden.
