Should you or a family member be screened for lung cancer? CT Screening Saves Lives. Find it and treat it early.

Low-dose CT screening is recommended for those who meet the NLST criteria: • Current or former smokers, aged 55 to 74 years • A smoking history of at least 30 pack-years (e.g., one pack/day for 30 years, two packs/day for 15 years) • No history of lung cancer New research is providing hope in the fight against lung cancer. The American Lung Association supports new low-dose CT screening recommendations for smokers or former smokers who meet the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) criteria. Early detection of lung cancer can improve survival rates.

If you live in DuPage or Kane counties, you may qualify for a free screening. Call the Lung HelpLine at 1-800-548-8252 for a confidential assessment.

ABC’s of Frugal Summer Fun By Carla Knipe

D

oes the prospect of entertaining your kids during the summer break send you into a panic? If you’re stuck for ideas, here’s a list of ways you can inspire your family fun--without breaking your budget. Animals If your children are “animal crazy” then animal-based activities like visiting a pet store, pond-dipping for creatures or even pet sitting for a neighbor are a real winner. Backyard Don’t think of your backyard as fencing in your creativity, think of it as another

room of your house! Use your yard for all the activities that would be too messy indoors (like water-balloons, mural painting and crazy sports) and just go for it. Best of all, you can invite the whole neighborhood to share the wackiness in a safe area. Cameras Don’t forget to record all your adventures! Today’s point-and-shoot digital cameras enable even young children to learn photography. Send children on a “photo scavenger hunt”, or let them create their very own scrapbooking project. Directions You may want to take the “wing it” approach to anything new, but if you’re not quite sure what you’re doing, researching some guidelines may mean the difference between an activity being a success or a complete failure. Event Listings Keep your ears—and eyes-open for what’s happening in your area by scanning local radio, newspapers, and magazines. If you find discount coupons, that’s even better. Factory Tours Is there anywhere around you that offers tours for free or a nominal cost? Food factories, fire and police stations suburban family | subfam.com

and even working farms are fantastic ways to do something different and learn something new. Check whether you need to book tours ahead of time and whether they’re age-appropriate. Gardening Getting your children to plant and nurture easy to grow flowers and vegetables is a great summer-long project because they’ll be able to see the end result. History Have you ever explored your town’s heritage? Get out and do some detective work. Local tourist information centres, City Hall and even your cemetery can help you learn about what made your town and region what it is today. Inquiry Let your curiosity be a starting point. Ask questions like “What am I interested in?” and “What is something that I’ve never had the chance to try?” They can lead to some surprising possibilities. Join the Fun Don’t just let your kids have all the fun while you sit back and watch—join in! You deserve to make some summer memories too so give yourself permission to do all those activities you remember from your own childhood. July/August 2013

Kitchen Let your kids occasionally take over the kitchen (with supervision, of course) to do some crazy science experiments, bake some treats or even learn how to make jam or salsa. Libraries Don’t forget to keep your kids’ brains sharp by reading! Use your library to research a new topic. Most libraries also run summer reading programs or special activities. Museums Take a field trip to view the exhibits in your local art gallery or museum, then encourage your children to make their own art based on what they’ve seen.

Quiet Moments Resist the temptation to constantly entertain your children. Sometimes, letting them find their own fun is the best lesson they can learn. Kids are so busy during the school year that the hot, sultry weather is a perfect excuse for some good old-fashioned R n’ R. Road Trips A short car trip can break up the monotony of summer days. Pick a route and see what points of interest you can find along the way.

Volunteering Put your vacation time to good use by participating in a good cause. Even if it’s just for one afternoon, volunteering makes you feel terrific and gives you a different perspective. Water Summer and water are a natural combination. How many activities involving water can you think of? But don’t underestimate the fun of running through a backyard sprinkler. X-pectations When school gets out, hold a family meeting to plan what your summer goals are. Learning about what everyone wants out of their vacation will make the most of precious family time.

New Places Where haven’t you been yet? Even if you live in a small town, there are nooks and crannies to explore and investigate.

Snacks You can never have too many of these! Have a steady supply of healthy snacks so you can just “grab and go” to keep your family fuelled up.

Outdoors Even though summer days are long, they fly by, so make the most of them. Learn a new game or plan an overnight camping trip. Spend as much time as possible outside because before you know it, you’ll be back to your fall routine.

Trails Even if you don’t consider yourselves an outdoor family, exploring your local walking or biking trails is a great way to be active. If you do venture further afield, make sure you take safety precautions— and a map.

Yard Sales Summer is prime yard sale season and regular “tours” of your neighborhood yard sales can be a fun activity in itself. Give your kids a set amount of money to spend and see what creative items they can purchase. Yard sales are great sources for finding board games, craft materials and sports equipment for a nominal cost.

Pinterest Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/) is a goldmine for ideas! You’ll find hundreds of “pins” for craft ideas, activities and recipes so if you hear “Mom…I’m bored!” then this is the resource to quickly come up with something fresh.

University Check whether your local community college or university runs any special summer programs. Even taking a tour around the buildings can be an interesting thing to do.

Zzzz’s After you use all these energetic ideas, you and your kids will be worn out but hopefully, you can look back and say what a memorable vacation you had!

DuPage Golf Peter Longo, PGA Life Member Associate Teaching Professional Oak Meadows Golf Course Addison, Illinois DuPageGolf.com “The Pause That Refreshes” One of my most popular trick shot clubs is The Rubber Hose, an ordinary garden hose with a driver head attached. It’s funny and entertaining, yet there is something in the routine that can really help every golfer. Because the hose is so flexible, I have to wait for it to drop onto my shoulders to finish the 28 out & about

backswing before I can start my downswing. This hesitation, or pause, is an excellent move for most golfers to incorporate into their own swing. The pause sets you up for a smooth transition from going back to starting down, a critical point in anyone’s swing. You can practice this pause by simply cutting an old garden hose to about 38 inches in length. Then, holding it like a regular golf club, make your backswing, wait for the hose to hit your shoulders and then start down. If you work on this a few minutes every day, you’ll become quite comfortable “pausing” at the top and be in a much better position to deliver the club to the ball, time after time. suburban family | subfam.com

River Road Des Plaines, IL 60016 847-803-GOLF (4653) www.GolfCenterDesPlaines.com Deliberate Practice Everyone knows that “practice makes perfect”, but it’s important to remember that practice also makes permanent. I want to discuss the “how” and “why” of deliberate practice to help make a good golf swing permanent. We often refer to our junior golfers and those just starting out the game as a “blank July/August 2013

canvas”, for the fact they have no bad habits (or good habits) when it comes to how they use their body to swing a golf club. It’s possible that they playother sports, and have athleticism, but that does not guarantee that they will naturally have good form in their golf swing.By teaching our bodies through deliberate practice we can make “perfect”, “perfect and permanent”. Once we have the proper instruction of what to practice it comes down to focus and discipline. Here are three practice methods that can help you • One Goal:Whether it be executing a bump and run, or fixing your grip, practice with the mindset of fixing one thing not your entire game. Be DELIBERATE! • Technology: Using a tool such as video during practice allows a player to verify that they are performing their swing with the proper mechanics through visual feedback. • Practice Like You Play: Emulate the golf course when on the range by going through the same exact routine before hitting the ball. Stay focused, stay disciplined with deliberate practice and your swing can become permanently perfect!

an educational consulting firm. “Parents who do not foster plans to extend their children’s learning into the summer are usually parents of children who struggle at the beginning of the school year.”

According to the National Summer Learning Association, all young people experience losses in learning when they do not participate in stimulating educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer.

Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, and keeping learning in summer can be just that, too. “It is important for every parent to realize that it is the summer, and summer must be fun!” Tomko says. “Children have worked hard all year and now they feel the payoff is the fun-filled days of summer vacation. The learning component must be incorporated in summer fun activities and cannot be hours in length. Quick learning interventions will help reiterate topics and stall regression.”

chool’s out for the summer and the cheers of children can be heard far and wide. Summer is a time to relax and enjoy the endless days of sunshine and play. It is also a time to reinforce all the skills learned during the previous school year.

Maybe parents are somewhat resistant to the idea of summer learning, too, for different reasons. Some parents do not quite know how to reinforce the skills, while others simply do not understand the benefit. “Let kids be kids and enjoy their summer vacation,” some parents might say remembering their own youthful summers full of play. However, according to a study by Dr. Harris Cooper, professor of psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, when students return to school after a long summer vacation, they’ve lost one to three months worth of learning. “Academic regression is real,” says Dr. Richard Tomko, Superintendent of Schools in a K-12 public school district in NJ and partner of Tomko, Tomko and Associates, 32 education central

Start thinking creatively and allow your child to learn naturally in real-life settings. When you think about the various topics your child learns about in school, you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy and fun it can be to incorporate “lessons” into everyday summer life.

Ready, Set, Read!

Get the whole family involved and start a Family Book Club. Depending on the age of the children, assign 10, 20, or 30 minutes per day (or most days of the week) to read together as a family. “Parents must emulate the learning activities with their children,” Tomko says. “Independent reading is the best source for children to maintain a level of literacy. Parents should make sure that suburban family | subfam.com

they are also familiar with their child’s book so they can discuss themes, characters, likes and dislikes about the book with their child.” Elementary school teacher Juliann Meletta agrees that reading is the best way to reinforce skills during the summer. “My number one priority for students in the summer is to read, read, read. There is no other product or procedure that packs more for its punch than getting kids to read independently.” As for her own two children, Meletta says, “I do everything I can to get books in the hands of my kids. We visit the local library and devour as many books as we can before taking a pile home.” In addition, many libraries offer summer reading programs with various incentives for completed reading.

The Write Stuff

There are many creative ways to keep children writing throughout the summer without asking them to write a book report or an essay about the Civil War. Kids can write emails to grandparents about their summer plans and activities. Parents can work with their children on a summer scrapbook and have the child write the captions for the pictures. Even something as simple as having a child write the grocery list will help engage children, especially younger ones, in forming letters and sounding out words.

Math Matters

Flash cards might be fun, but don’t forget July/August 2013

about everyday activities to engage children in math. Preparing a recipe helps children use measurement. “Asking a child to make his favorite recipe will strengthen his ability to process, create, and complete an important project,” Tomko adds. Encourage your child to do a few chores if he hasn’t started already and to save money for something special. This will help teach math skills as well as necessary life skills in budgeting and financial responsibility.

Technology Tie-In

Kids love all things techy – computers, iPods, and smart phones are all great ways to keep children interested in learning throughout the summer. There are many websites like mathblaster.com and abcya. com as well as apps available to facilitate learning in all academic areas and for various ages. Kids can practice the alphabet and sounds, review multiplication facts through games, and watch videos about their favorite jungle animals. Simply search academic games according to age or grade level on the internet and get started.

Magical Materials

The most basic skills can be reviewed in creative ways when different kinds of materials are used like sidewalk chalk, fingerpaints and window markers. On a sunny day, sit on the driveway with sidewalk chalk and write a story. “My 4 year-old draws a different picture on each sidewalk block, and then I tell the story based on what I see,” Meletta says. “The best part is that he often disagrees with my story, and he’ll say, ‘Mommy, that’s not what I mean!’ and then he’s using his own vocabulary to narrate his story. For my 7 year-old son, I do the same, but sometimes I change it up with a spelling test, math problems or true and false quizzes. They love these!” When summer days are gray, camp out by a window and use window markers to write rainy day stories, solve word problems, or play a game of Hangman using rainy day words like “thunder,” “lightening,” and “raincoat.” Even a simple review of addition facts becomes much more fun when kids are writing on the windows! We all know that a plain cardboard box can lead to hours of creativity. Add construction paper, markers and paints and children have all the necessities to create sets for plays and puppet shows. “Creating summer plays helps younger children enhance diction and interact with dialogue,” Tomko says. “This type of activity can incorporate friends, July/August 2013

costumes (as an art component), music, and other learning tools to help maintain and even advance literary skills. One can even use historical characters and stories with this as well.”

Know It All News

The newspaper is a powerful resource for cross-curricular, everyday learning. Where else can you find reading, math, science, history, geography and the arts all in one place? Children can report on the weather in their town as well as in a city in another state or country, depending on the newspaper. Sports fanatics can look up their favorite baseball team’s most recent batting statistics and keep a record for the summer. The newspaper includes tables and graphs as well as information about cultures not only in their region but around the world. With some creativity and a little planning, summer can be fun and relaxing while keeping children’s minds active and enjoying lessons learned in everyday summer settings. With mom or dad as the teacher, summer days can go from hazy and lazy to getting kids yearning for learning!

Firsthand Savings on Secondhand Goods By Lara Krupicka

I’ve been a thrift diva since childhood. Sniffing out a bargain brings me a thrill, so I’ve never shied away from buying other people’s cast-offs. Not so with many of my peers. In recent years, however, the stigma of buying used has faded thanks to sites like eBay, Craigslist and Bookoo. com. Economic necessity and the green movement may give thrift a chance to become trendy. Want to get in on the savings? Check out these possibilities before you pay full price:

Sporting Goods

With kids’ sizes and interests changing often, it makes sense to spend less by getting used equipment. Communities have long been holding athletic equipment resales and you can usually find outgrown gear at garage sales. But if you need a sports-related item right away, used sporting goods retailers, like Play It Again Sports, have new and used stock available year-round.

Watch for: Ian Somerville, owner of the Novi, Michigan Play It Again Sports store, suggests looking for defects that would affect the function of the item. On leather goods (cleats, mitts, skates) make sure the seams are intact. Inspect for cracks in wood items and watch for extensive rust on metal parts. Somerville also cautions buyers of things like lacrosse pads to “make sure that all of the Velcro and elastic works well, and that nothing is torn or missing (or too smelly!)”. Better off new: Personal items like mouth guards and jock shorts. Ski goggles , which usually only last a season or two before getting too scratched to see through. And hockey sticks - Somerville points out that “it’s difficult to know if there is a micro-crack inside a used hockey stock that is ready to break on your first shot”.

Clothing

As toddlers, your kids may have been fine with hand-me-downs, but most grade-schoolers like to make their own choices. You can still save on clothes by shopping at secondhand stores and clothing resale events. Linda Smith, a mother of two fashion-conscious girls appreciates the value of getting name brand clothes at bargain prices through buying at resale shops. One benefit Smith notes is that “they’re already shrunk. The clothes’ size and shape isn’t going to change.” Her advice on shopping for secondhand clothes is: “Be patient. You’ve got to dig to find what your kids will like. They are going to try on a lot and just get one or two things.” Watch for: Worn spots on elbows and knees, broken zippers, and fatigued elastic. Better off new: Athletic shoes for daily use where quality affects physical comfort, and underwear (for obvious reasons).

Furniture

One category where buying used costs less, but also nets potentially better quality is furniture. Fun, unusual, and well-built desks, bunk beds, and bookcases don’t have to cost a fortune. Check out neighborhood yard sale listings, and estate sales to find that piece you’re looking for. Watch for: Signs of mold or deeper-thansurface water damage on wood, and upholstered pieces with funky smells. Better off new: Cribs, due to safety standards, and mattresses, particularly with the rise in bedbug infestations. July/August 2013

Instruments

Particularly when your child is just starting out learning an instrument, it’s a good idea not buy them a new instrument. In many cases, you can rent either through your child’s school or a local music shop. But once your child has decided to stick with an instrument, you can save up to 30% or 40% by buying used. The key is buying a quality instrument. As Carla Ulbrich, a New Jersey musician and former music store staffer, points out, “You can find cheaply-made instruments that don’t play in tune. Then your kid will think they have no talent. This can be very frustrating.” Watch for: Brand names. Certain makers are known for their level of quality. Find out for your child’s particular instrument which these are and shop accordingly (for example: Bundy for clarinets, Bach for trumpets, Ludwig for drums). Make sure all moving parts work smoothly, pads aren’t worn down, and any corks are in good condition. Remember that dents are generally cosmetic. It also helps to have a music shop inspect the instrument and advise you of any work needed before buying from a third party (also Ulbrich strongly advises against purchasing an instrument through eBay or Craigslist where you’re buying sight unseen from an unvetted seller).

When you talk people who do Pilates, they will be the first to agree that the method is practically a miracle. Created by Joseph Pilates during WWI as a way to help rehabilitate detainees, the method is designed to improve flexibility, strength and body awareness through mat exercise and work on spring-loaded equipment. Many people already know the benefits of Physical Therapy for recovering from an injury or surgery. What many people don’t know is the beauty of combining Pilates with PT for individualized treatment and hands-on care using state of the art Pilates equipment.

said. “The benefits of Core strengthening expedite recovery for all types of injury and aliments because they teach people to use their bodies more efficiently.

Chicago resident Diane Fidler, a Physical Therapist and Certified Pilates Teacher, began offering this method of rehabilitation to her clients nearly a decade ago when she opened Core Fitness and Physical Therapy in Evergreen Park (2940 W. 95th St.). Fidler recently opened a second location in Countryside (6475 Joliet Rd.) in order to service the western suburbs with the same high quality care that has made the Evergreen Park location so successful.

If you have ever experienced traditional Physical Therapy, you will notice immediately that the approach is very different at Core. The mission of Core is a reflection of Fidler’s high-level fitness experiences (she is a marathon runner and triathlete, as well as a former Big 10 College Cheerleader and bodybuilding champion) combined with the personal and professional benefits she’s achieved using the Pilates method. Core focuses on combining traditional therapeutic interventions, such as ultrasound and massage, with Pilates-based whole body conditioning. Sessions at Core are always one-onone, which means the therapists are able to closely monitor patients’ movements in an effort to expedite recovery.

“Since Pilates actually began his work by attaching springs to hospital beds in order to rehabilitate, it seems like a natural fit to incorporate Pilates into Physical Therapy, Fidler

“As a 69-year-old, rotator-cuff patient, I can attest to the effectiveness of the Pilates/ PT technique, said Dick Moran, a Beverly resident and longtime client at Core. “My

doctor/friend at Northwestern said I had the option of longer recovery surgery, or trying shorter term physical therapy. As he said: ‘Try the PT because it might save you a golf season.... and you don’t have that many left.’ Needless to say, my treatment was a success and I not only was playing golf in a few short weeks but the Pilates increased my strength and flexibility, chopping three strokes off my handicap.” Most patients receive therapy 2-3 times a week for 4-6 weeks, depending on the condition. In-studio PT at Core is performed using Pilates principles on Pilates equipment. The equipment uses spring resistance in order to effectively balance muscle strength and flexibility. This method of muscle balancing treats not only the injury, but also the body as a whole. This provides a faster and less painful recovery with a decreased chance of re-injury. The focus of exercises is on the quality of movement versus the quantity of repetitions in order to restore proper body mechanics and eliminate faulty movement patterns that lead to pain and dysfunction. A huge benefit of receiving Physical Therapy through Core is that Pilates and other fitness classes are offered within the same physical location. This means that once patients are discharged from therapy, they receive a card July/August 2013

good for three free mat classes to help them continue on the path to wellness. Core even offers a Senior/Post Rehab class designed specifically for senior citizens and/or those recovering from injury. Additionally, clients have the option of attending private sessions with any of the Pilates instructors, which means they can transition seamlessly from their Physical Therapy work on the Pilates equipment to more advanced-level work with an instructor. “It’s always great to get private clients who have been through Physical Therapy at our studio,” said Terri McCabe, Certified Pilates Teacher and the Director of Education and Training at Core. “It means they have received great instruction and had plenty of experience on the equipment. It also means I can get their detailed history from the therapists they worked with in order to design workouts safe for them, while still allowing me to challenge them.” CORE is an in-network provider for BlueCross/BlueShield PPO members. They also accept Workers Compensation claims. Have You Had the

“Safe Sun Talk”

With Your Tweens and Teens? By Ashley Talmadge

A

s parents, there are a variety of Talks we prepare to have with our children. There’s the Water Safety Talk. The Drug & Alcohol Talk. And of course, the Sex Talk. We know, too, that none of these subjects can be covered with just one Talk. As the wisdom goes, “Start early, make it age appropriate, and repeat it often as your child grows.” But there’s another discussion you might not have thought about, and it’s becoming more and more important. The Safe Sun Talk. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is by far the most common cancer in the United States, and 85-90% of all skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet rays. Melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, is the second most common cancer among adolescents and young adults ages 15-29. And the incidence is increasing. Unfortunately, teens seem relatively oblivious to concerns about sun exposure. A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that between the ages of 10 and 13, kids tend to both increase their exposure to the sun’s rays, and decrease their use of sunscreens and other protection. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that boys are less likely to use sunscreen routinely, report less knowledge of the sun’s effects, and spend more time in the sun than girls. But as girls move from the tween to teen years, they become more likely to view tanning positively, and many succumb to misinformation provided by the indoor tanning industry. Here are some tips for starting that all-important Safe Sun conversation with your tweens and teens. Listen to your teen’s concerns. As we all know, a teen’s attitude is rarely swayed by a torrent of stern words. Don’t lecture. Provide straightforward information, but allow your child to express his feelings. The better you understand the barriers to your teen’s use of sun protection, the more successful you’ll be at helping him remove those obstacles. Provide alternative ways to “look good” and be healthy. Like it or not, tween and teen girls are concerned with their appearance, sometimes to an unhealthy degree. Your daughter may view tanned skin as an indicator of 42 family wellness

beauty and physical fitness. Thus, it may be more effective to talk to her about premature wrinkling than about skin cancer. In her post “Here Comes the Sun,” dermatologist Dr. Madeline Krauss says, “Wrinkles, brown spots, big pores, yellowish bumps, a sallow tone, these are the harvest of the sun worshiper. By protecting, you will look younger, period.” Discuss exercise and sunless tanning products as being great ways of achieving that healthy glow your teen is after. Help your tween or teen find the right sunscreen. The Mayo Clinic reminds that, “If you don’t care for the sunscreen, you’re not as likely to use it consistently.” A spray may work well for the boy who says it takes too long to apply sunscreen. A cosmetic facial cream with SPF protection may work better with a girl’s makeup. Any form (spray, cream, lotion, gel, or stick) can be effective as long as it is a broad spectrum product with an SPF of at least 30. Go beyond sunscreen. The sun is strongest and most likely to burn during midday, so teach the Shadow Rule: “If your shadow is suburban family | subfam.com

shorter than you, seek shade.” Promote the use of accessories like brimmed hats, sunglasses, swim shirts, and sarongs. And let your tweens and teens choose their own protective gear. Items will get more use if they’re stylish and cool. Provide a visual reminder. According to the EPA’s survey, tweens and teens report “I forget” as the top reason for not using sunscreen. Leave a tube on the bathroom counter along with all the other products your tweens and teens use daily. If your child plays sports, put sunscreen in the gym bag. Hang hats and other sun gear near the door. Acne products may cause sun-sensitivity. Some ingredients in both OTC and prescription acne products may cause the skin to be more susceptible to the sun’s rays. Be sure your tweens and teens understand this if they use such products, and help them develop protection strategies. Don’t allow your teen to use a tanning bed—ever! There is absolutely no doubt that use of tanning beds is linked to melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Many states have laws restricting indoor tanning by minors. Be a good role model. Put on the sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay out of the sun during the middle of the day when possible. If sun safety measures are practiced as part of the household routine, it’s much more likely that your children will continue using such strategies through their teen-age years. (And if your own skin is well-preserved, you have a solid visual advertisement!)

celebrate!

A

s the summer season approaches, families will start preparing for long weekends, backyard barbeques, celebrations and holidays! While it all may sound like fun, sometimes the person hosting becomes stressed over which meals to cook, how long it will take to prepare and what to make.

3. ASK & ACCOMMODATE

As a solution, Cooking Planit – the “GPS for Cooking”, takes the guess work out of grocery shopping, preparing meals and cooking for a party! Below are a few basic tips to help anyone plan for family gatherings ,as well as, a sample recipe.

4. KIDZONE

1. PLAN & SAVE

5. BUILD THE BUFFET

When planning how much food to prepare, consider how many guests you have invited and how many courses or dishes you plan to serve. The more dishes you have, the less you need to make of each. Cutting back on leftover food saves on waste, time and money.

For buffet-style dinners, take out serving platters a few days early. Use post-it notes to assign each recipe a serving dish, then arrange the platters on the buffet to make sure it all fits.

2. MAKE AN APP FOR THAT It’s eating season, so guests will arrive hungry! Have a few appetizers prepared and ready to serve. Apps should be easy to make and serve at room temperature. Dips, shrimp cocktail, and veggie platters are simple, but they do the trick. 50 celebrate!

Ask guests ahead of time if they have any dietary restrictions. You don’t have to accommodate every request with each dish, but provide something substantial for people with restrictions. They will appreciate it, and you will be at ease knowing you accommodated everyone.

Do kids and their parents a favor by having food ready for them when they arrive. This way, parents can feed the kids when necessary and enjoy dinner themselves once adults are served.

6. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Unless you’ve hosted big parties before, everything you plan to do will likely take longer than expected. Build a cushion of time into your schedule, including time to get ready and aim to be ready at least one hour ahead of time to allow for last minute details and early bird guests! suburban family | subfam.com
