Depending on where you live, you may already feel the air getting cooler and crisper. With school back in session and all the talk about Halloween, we know that fall is just around the corner. While we are busy with school and extracurricular activities, this is also a lovely time to take a relaxing break and connect to nature as a family. Here are some fun fall activities to help you and your kids connect to nature.
One of my most favorite memories of autumn is going apple picking with my family. I was so enthralled by all the hidden treasures hanging in the orchard. I loved tasting the different varieties of apples and deciding which was my favorite. My family and I actually just went apple and raspberry picking, so I was able to pass along my cherished childhood memories to them!
This time of year is the perfect opportunity to head to a local farm to pick your own produce of the season, whether it be apples, pears, raspberries, squash, or others available where you live. It is a wonderful chance for the entire family to enjoy a few hours strolling around an orchard or farm taking in the sights,
Richardson Farm, Spring Grove, ILfragrances, and miracles of nature. By taking your children on a u-pick adventure, they will learn a tremendous amount about healthy food and the environment, and you will support your local community. Plus, locally grown food tastes better, is more nutritious, and stays fresh longer.
The best part is that you can go home from the farm and spend quality time together in the kitchen creating tasty meals from the food you hand-picked yourselves. There are so many healthy kid-friendly recipes to discover, from smoothies to side dishes to snacks. When your children play this much of a role in gathering and preparing their food, it will have a huge impact on them and influence the food decisions they make in the future.
Nothing feels more like fall time than pumpkin patches, hay rides, and corn mazes! Your kids will love running around outside in a corn maze and searching for the biggest, brightest pumpkin to take home with them. No matter where you live, you should be able to find a place in your area that offers these fun autumn seasonal treats for your family to enjoy.
And, of course, your children will have a blast carving the pumpkins and displaying their works of art for neighbors to see. We always love toasting the pumpkin seeds and enjoying them as a healthy snack afterwards. Even if you can’t find a pumpkin patch by you, you can still grab a few pumpkins at a local store and carve them outside in your yard to get some relaxing outdoor time together.
One of the most incredible aspects of nature is all the colors we can find. During autumn, colors pop out all over as the leaves begin to
change. When we experience the vivid natural colors during this season, we are filled with awe. This special emotion helps us feel happier and calmer, and is worth seeking out. One way to fill your kids with some awe this time of year is to go for a hike or family road trip to observe the gorgeous hues of changing leaves.
The fall foliage can be so soothing as well as inspiring. Bring along a camera and be sure to snap lots of photos of the gorgeous leaves, and when you return home encourage your kids to draw or paint pictures based on what they saw.You can also organize an online slideshow of your photos or print them to create collages. Another fun idea is to collect some of the fallen leaves and bring them home for art projects.
This is also a great time of year to get outdoors and give back to others. When we spread kindness throughout our community, we actually experience a physiological change called a helper’s high. These positive
feelings are heightened even more if we are volunteering outside and connecting with nature.
There are numerous ways to volunteer outside in your community. Contact a local farm and see if they need help with activities like weeding, planting seeds, sifting compost, digging, or watering. You can also ask about or organize your own gleaning project, which involves picking leftover crops from a farmer’s field after they have been commercially harvested and donating the produce locally.You could go to a u-pick farm and then donate what you gather to a local food bank or put together gift baskets for people in the hospital. Look for beach, river, or park clean ups near you to register for as a family. Another idea is to offer to rake a sick or elderly neighbor’s leaves. This is a great way to get your kids involved in community service and to see the results right away.

Golf Tip: Down Through Contact
The game of golf requires a variety of shots, which is why it is such a complex game. A golfer is tasked with hitting long straight shots off the tee and being able to putt with precision - all while keeping emotions in check and avoiding thoughts about the looming deadline at work or picking up the kids from practice. An area that often gets overlooked and where golfers can struggle is the mid-iron game. I see a lot of well-intentioned golfers trying to “help” the ball up into the air by swinging up at the ball through impact – a technique that seems logical but causes more harm than good. Swinging up on the ball promotes contact too low on the clubface and produces
a thin feeling shot that doesn’t have the distance golfers need.
Don’t try to lift or scoop the ball into the air with your irons. Instead, practice maintaining a feeling of keeping your chest down through impact (especially with the mid-irons) to prevent thin up-swing shots. Swinging down through impact helps get the sweet spot center of the clubface to the ball for more solid contact and a nice divot.
One is to flight the ball on a piercing trajectory that cuts through the breeze nicely. Another, perhaps easier method to hitting solid wind-beaters, is pulling a longer club and swinging easy.
Because, when many golfers are faced with shots into the wind, their first instinct is often to hit the same club as they normally would and swing as hard as possible. However, that can add unwanted spin to the ball and more directional variability, meaning it immediately balloons up in the air and lands short and likely offline.

Like many aspects of golf, there are multiple ways to approach hitting shots into the wind.
So, by taking one or two more clubs (a 5 or 6 iron, instead of a 7), moving the ball slightly farther back in your stance at address (the width of a ball or two) and maintaining a smooth swing instead of going all out, both spin and launch will remain low and the shot will be less affected by the wind.
The simple point? Instead of swinging for the fences when it’s windy out, force yourself to pull a longer club and swing less than full to keep the ball below the breeze!

Team sports are a great way to keep kids active but not all kids enjoy playing them. When kids avoid team sports, parents look for other ways their children can continue to be healthy and active. How can you get your kids moving around when they aren’t part of a sports team?
Choose activities that have the potential for lifelong enjoyment such as biking, swimming, walking, and hiking. These activities are great because while they can be done individually, for a lifetime, they also can be enjoyed as a family. Encourage everyone to go on a walk or bike ride together, hike in a local park, or spend the day at the pool. Get a step counter for each family member and create a friendly competition to see who can get the most steps.
Go outside
Simply getting your kids outside can be a great way to sneak in exercise. Visit a local park, encourage them to climb trees, swing, or play tag. Have your child go on a “treasure hunt” in the backyard and collect items that interest them like sticks, rocks, flowers, or leaves. Catching fireflies in the summer, building a snowman in the winter, or raking leaves in the fall all help kids to be active while not playing a sport.
Just because your child does not enjoy team sports does not mean they may not enjoy an individual sport. Gymnastics, swimming, track and field, wrestling, diving, archery, golf, or weight
lifting are all good examples of individual sports where children compete against themselves.
Limit screen time
When screen time is allowed, try to encourage them to move while they are watching television. If a song comes on, get up and dance or march along. If they are playing video games, encourage games that involve move-
ment. If the child is sedentary while enjoying screen time, ask them to complete some sort of activity like chores or outdoor play before they turn the television or tablet on.
Set an example
Children learn by example. If the parent has a low activity level the child will most likely see exercise as a low priority. Lead by example
and get moving. Begin an exercise routine or a hobby that includes movement, like gardening, and invite your child to join you. Make the most of the time together.
Turn on the music and have a family dance party. There is nothing like a great song to get a body moving. Dancing is fun and it’s great exercise too. Some children may also enjoy trying dance classes, baton twirling, or cheerleading. All of these are a great source of exercise. If your child is drawn to music and theater, get them involved in a theater production in school or your community.
Find a new hobby
Encourage your child to find a hobby that encourages movement and activity such as skateboarding, fishing, bowling, and woodworking. If the child is doing something they enjoy they won’t even notice they are also exercising.
Play
Leisure sports can be more fun for kids that don’t care for team sports because they are less competitive and therefore have less pressure to perform at a higher level. Encouraging kids to play gets them active. Playing frisbee or frisbee golf, tag, catch, shooting hoops, and duck duck goose all require kids to run around. They will be having so much fun they won’t notice they are exercising.
Chores
Chores are a great way to get kids active and teach them the value of hard work at the same time. Ask your child to clean their room, vacuum, mow the lawn, or sweep. Consider paying them an allowance for more motivation.
While team sports have many benefits, they are not for everyone. Kids who do not enjoy team sports don’t have to be less active. With these tips, kids will enjoy an active lifestyle that can be maintained for a lifetime.

With schools back in session, it’s understandable
that many parents and students may feel anxious.
Healthy routines can help your students stay productive and positive, particularly during this time of heightened. Daily patterns of actions not only help kids develop life skills but also help them feel safe.
Here are five helpful tips on setting healthy practices for the upcoming school year:
1Avoid the morning rush—and frazzled nerves—by setting the stage the night before.
Avoid a frantic rush involving making decisions or looking for items in the morning; prepare outfits or school uniforms before going to sleep. Make it a habit to organize everything your child needs for the next school day in a specific place the evening before, including backpacks and school projects. For many families, this may be an area near the door. As children age, they can take on more and more responsibility for this before-school prep routine themselves.
2Start the day with a healthy breakfast—and maybe some positive affirmations.
Hunger is a type of chronic stress on the body that impairs learning as well as physical and mental development. Spending time together sharing a nutritious breakfast and some positive affirmations or expectations also sets the tone for the rest of the day. Try to have breakfast at the same time each day. Involve your child in breakfast prep if they’re old enough.This shared experience creates an opportunity to bond and, more importantly, builds their confidence to prepare their own meals someday.
3Get quality sleep.
Sleep is crucial to physical and mental health and for successfully maintaining routines. So be consistent about bedtime and wake time. Help kids wind down by ruling that electronics can’t be used close to bedtime and helping them to switch to calming activities such as reading or taking a warm bath.
It may be harder to enforce bedtimes with teens; therefore, it’s essential to communicate with young adults regularly about how sleep deficiency can impact their performance and productivity. It may help to invite your teen to join you for a warm cup of tea or a meditation session before bedtime. Or you can encour-
age them to explore and find their own winddown routines and activities.
4Practice and express gratitude. Kids need a safe space where they can talk about their problems. As a parent, conversations, where your child opens up about their troubles, allow you to promote gratitude without devaluing their worries.
Make it a habit to spend quality time with your child each day to talk about what you are grateful for that day.The best time to connect would be over dinner or before bedtime; make sure the TV is off and electronics, especially smartphones, are set aside. If they’re not comfortable talking, journaling might be more their style.
5Allow flexibility when necessary. While routines can be healthy and reassuring, they can also induce anxiety, particularly for a child that feels pressured to maintain a schedule. Sometimes, routines need to be tweaked to meet your goals and sustain mental health.
When routines become too stressful, allow time for soothing activities. For some, a nap or a walk is all they need. For others, a longer break or a counseling session with a professional may be essential.

Everyone had a busy day. Maybe it was at school learning and working hard. Maybe it was at home keeping up with the household. Maybe it was at work doing what you love or what needs to be done. Maybe it was endless errands that leave you feeling like you spent the day in the car.
No matter how you spent the busy day, now everyone is home and ready to relax, but there’s that pesky homework to take care of. Before it turns into a battle of wills and even tears try these tips to keep the peace.
1. Be Present. I know this is hard. We have so much to do, and we multitask. Dinner is not going to cook itself, right? Multitasking, however, may be causing more stress and mistakes.
The more present we can be the more quickly things seem to get accomplished. If your child struggles with homework your availability can make a big difference allowing you to answer a question before frustration takes over.
2. Side by Side Reading. Many kids have reading time as part of their homework. Show kids that reading is a priority by making that time a family reading time. Everyone can participate.
Grab something for yourself and sit down and read. It can be the novel collecting dust on your nightstand or the newspaper. Even something for work could count here as long as it is dedicated reading time. (And no, Facebook doesn’t count.) Even a little kids can sit with a stack of books to look through. Mod-
eling good reading habits goes a long way in teaching kids that reading is a good part of everyone’s life.
3. Know What Makes Your Child Tick. Some people insist doing homework right when kids get home is the best way to get it done. While this ensures a less tired child, that may not work for every kid.
Some kids need time to decompress from a busy school day. You may find that a half hour for snack and playing outside works wonders. Try out some different times and see what works for your child. Once you find what works best, try to make it consistent.
4. Wave the White Flag. Sometimes you just need to surrender. There are days that feel overwhelming and the homework is just too much. While it is important to teach responsibility, we need to be able to recognize when something is truly too difficult for a child to work on independently. Often this
indicates that more instruction is needed in the classroom before the child can do it without teacher support at home.
Instead of forcing a truly difficult task, talk about it with your child and make a note for the teacher that it was exceptionally hard. This is not an excuse for not wanting to do homework. Most teachers would much rather know that a student is struggling at home than have a child in tears over their work or, even worse, a parent complete the assignment.
Homework is an opportunity to practice things learned in class and provide feedback for the teacher about how much of a concept a child grasps. Teachers have no desire to know that a parent is capable of completing that math worksheet. Open communication with the teacher, parent and child makes homework a much better experience for everyone.
Homework can be a tricky task after a long day. For most kids’ homework is a reality of school life. Making the best out of it will help both you and your child.

The 2023-2024 academic year is in full swing across the USA. As children get acquainted with new schedules and routines, teachers, and friends, many parents wonder what they can do to help their kids succeed this year at school. With declining test scores, staffing shortages, etc. now more than ever a higher rate of children are struggling academically, emotionally, and mentally.
Follow this advice from Dr. Rebecca Jackson, Brain Wellness Expert and author of ‘Back on Track’ to help your child thrive.
• Set homework expectations based on attention span and not based on the amount of homework or their age and grade level. This will set you both up for greater success!
• If your child can focus for 15 minutes at a time, but homework requires an hour plan ahead! This will require you to either join your child in supporting their attention and work beyond the first 15 minutes or break the homework up into chunks.
• Create a routine of structure and support
• Choose a night to sit down and review the school portal together to review what is coming up - keep the interaction positive and create a plan for the week. The goal is for your student
to feel supported.
• Next help support the plan with gentle reminders and guidance where needed
• Goal setting - Each new year is a fresh start, and while it’s easy to start with high hopes and big plans for success, staying consistent in working towards those goals throughout the year is hard.
• Ask your child to write down three goals for the year that are their goals - (not your goals for them).
• Break the goals down into smaller parts to talk about what needs to be done each week and day to achieve those goals
• As a parent write down three goals in how you will support your child in achieving THEIR goals
• Post the goals someplace visible as a reminder to keep everyone on track for success!

Running in autumn is beautiful. The temperatures drop in the fall, making it an ideal time to run outside. The humidity and heat won’t cause your body extra stress. You won’t get dehydrated so quickly. All in all, your running performance might noticeably improve thanks to better weather conditions. Maintaining your goal pace may suddenly become a little easier, too, as you try to hit your next goal. Temperature changes can happen quickly during the fall season. Layer your clothing and plan to take off layers off as you warm up. Lights, reflective gear and bright colors are great ways to increase your visibility. Avoid slipping on wet leaves.
