Turn a Backyard Scavenger Hunt Into a

City-Wide Adventure By Cindy Hudson

K

ids love scavenger hunts. Tracking down clues with the promise of a prize can keep them going for hours. With a little time and a bit of planning, you can turn this afternoon activity into a weeks-long adventure that will engage your kids and their friends the rest of summer.

ANTIQUE & COLLECTIBLE • MARKET

You can easily organize this game to work for kids aged six and over, and older kids may appreciate being able to head off to some activities on their own. The best thing is, a city-wide scavenger hunt can be fun for you too. Here are six easy steps to help you plan one successfully: 1. Decide who’s in the group. Aim for four to six kids and look at inviting several close friends or those who live in your neighborhood. You could also tap members of a book club or a scout troop. Make sure the parents are on board, as you’ll want to trade off who drives and supervises each activity.

2. Pick a prize. Will you have a treat after each event, or do you want to plan a big party when summer is over? Younger children may be more motivated by the promise of an immediate treat, while older ones may look forward to a bigger pay-out. 3. Identify your locations. Create a list with four categories of your choosing. Possibilities include local parks, museums, restaurants, suburban family | subfam.com

John Hancock Building, Chicago trails, festivals, fountains and more. Include places and foods your kids are not familiar with so you can make trying new things fun. 4. Divide and conquer. Put the kids in charge of choosing which items on the list they’d like to see. Each child can choose one or two outings and work with a parent to make it happen. Keep in mind that you can pull from more than one list each time you get together. For instance, one day you may decide to have a picnic at a park and pick up lunch supplies from a store specializing in ethnic foods that are new to most of you. Or, you can hike on an urban trail that leads to a community fountain. Just make sure that you go to at least one place from each category before the game ends. 5. Develop clues. Look online or use your knowledge of local terrain to find things to hunt for.As an example, you could write a clue that asks everyone to find a certain statue at the park or a dish that uses a certain spice at a restaurant, or a painting that features a snowy landscape at the museum. Collect reJuly/August 2014

minders of the things you find. Paper menus, museum postcards, and pressed flowers are just a few ideas of mementos to pick up. 6. Choose your dates. Most people have busy schedules in the summer, which means it will be difficult for you to require everyone to go on every outing. Instead, look for days when at least one or two others are available to go with whoever organizes the event. If you get more, consider it a plus. By the end of summer you’ll all be bursting with stories to share about the places you went and the things you experienced. This is when you may want to plan a party, and make sure everyone can attend. Plan time to gather together so you can talk about your game. Consider asking a few questions that everyone answers. What new thing did you discover? What was your favorite activity? What would you do again? Is there anything you would leave off the list if you played again? It may also be fun to display photos you took, and put together a collage of the mementoes you collected. Then you can pull out your creation when you’re ready to plan next summer’s scavenger hunt.

7 Tips for Fabulous Family Day-Tripping By Judy M. Miller

A

re the kids restless? How about you? It might be time for a change in routine or scenery. Day trips are a wonderful and often inexpensive option to family vacations, and the possibilities are endless and abound everywhere, no matter where you live. I rely on day trips to break up the boredom that sets in rather quickly during the extended summer break.

Keep a Binder: You will likely find that you travel within a few hours radius, as we do. I keep a binder with section dividers so that I can include information about the areas we frequent, mindful of free admittance days and special events and festivals. I am on the mailing list for surrounding states’ tourism offices, whose information I keep with my binder.

Plan On It: Make getting out of the house and away a priority. Part of making day trips happen is commitment. Set aside one day of the month that you can regularly stick to, like the last Saturday of every month. Don’t work? Consider a day during the week, when destinations might not be as busy. Discuss it with all family members and add it to the calendar.

Think Local: With gas prices continuing to rise, consider a day trip where you live. Options increase during the summer months, when the majority of kids are out of school. We take advantage of what local communities offer by checking out their websites and links. One constant in our family has apple picking in late summer. We have been going to the same orchard for close to two decades. We pick as much as we all can carry, arriving home to prepare most of the apples for applesauce and freeze the rest for delicious pies to be eaten during the colder months.

Brainstorm Ideas: Explore the options. Be sure to consider and include your children’s preferences and interests. Consider indoors and outdoors options. My kids range in ages of nineteen down to ten, two girls and two boys. Their interests are vast and ever changing as they age. We have traveled a few hours to explore zoos and museums, fish or kayak, zipline, walk through an auto show, ride a train into a large city for the purpose of seeing a specific exhibition or enjoying a cultural festival, learn about the Thoroughbred horse, watch cows being milked and cheese being made, walk and roll down the hot sand dunes into a cool wet Great Lake on a hot day, and much more. 8 seasons

Think Summer: What options do you have where you live? My kids love to picnic, and they usually bring a Frisbee and soccer ball to play with. They also love to hike. One recurring excursion we take is to state parks, where the entrance fee is nominal. We pack food, snacks and drinks for the day, along with plenty of blankets to sit and nap on, as well as some cards, sketchpads and colored pencils. A favorite pastime is skipping rocks and one of my youngest is very suburban family | subfam.com

good at it. She also brings her bird book along. Remember Your Diaper Bag Era: Perhaps you still are using a diaper bag. My diaper bag has been a great “training” ground for always being prepared. I realize I have relied on mine well past the time I have needed it, adjusting it to more of a toddler bag, then a kids “go-to” bag. I still carry a large bag with multiple compartments in the car year-round. I also have a first-aid kit with bug repellant and sunscreen (make sure everything is replenished and updated), gallon sized bags and wipes for mishaps, as well as old towels and a few umbrellas. Make the Most of Your Time: We’re up and away first thing in the morning, often deciding on our destination as we pull out of the driveway. I check my tires, fluids, and gas up the car the evening before. My kids keep packed backpacks in their closets. So, we move out as soon as they’ve dressed and brushed their teeth they grab their backpacks. Sometimes we just grab breakfast on the way to our destination, as an extra “treat.” We return home late—tired, dirty, content, and reconnected through another family experience. I often look back, or into my rearview mirror, and I see sleepy heads resting on siblings’ shoulders. And I know my kids will have another memory to share with each other. July/August 2014

Pool Safety Tips • Never leave small children unsupervised – even for a few seconds. • Keep children away from pool filters, as the suction force may injure them or prevent them from surfacing. • Be sure all pool users know how to swim. Learners should be accompanied by a good swimmer. • Don’t swim alone or allow others to swim alone. • Don't rely on swimming lessons or "floaties" to protect your children in the water. • Check the pool area regularly for glass bottles, toys or other potential accident hazards. • Keep CD players, radios and other electrical devices away from pools or nearby wet surfaces. • Don’t allow anyone who has been drinking alcohol to use the pool. • Stay out of the pool during rain or lightning storms. • Never dive into an above-ground pool and check the water depth before plunging into an in-ground pool. Keep clear of the area near a diving board.

Lake Park Golf Course

1015 Howard Avenue, Des Plaines 847-391-5730 DPParks.org Rob Hutzler, PGA GolfTEC-Des Plaines Certified Personal Coach Properly Fit Clubs Are Just As Important For Junior Golfers Properly fit equipment is a critical component in the development of all junior golfers. The variety of clubs available today makes this process much easier than 20 or 30 years ago when juniors were given their parents old clubs. Juniors playing with cut-down or clubs that are clearly too long for them will result in frustration, poor swing mechanics, and the start of bad habits. Clubs that are cut-down will be improperly balanced or much too heavy to swing properly. Grips that are too big will also make it difficult to swing properly and hit the ball 26 out & about

at the target. A certified fitter will make sure they're using the proper clubs for their age and height. Junior clubs are available based on age and height. A set of junior clubs will only last at most a couple seasons before they grow into the next set. A junior set consists of 3-7 clubs, and is relatively inexpensive compared to an adult set. Some companies offer a trade-in value as the child outgrows their current clubs and need the next size up. Taking the step of seeing a PGA Professional or certified fitter will result in a happy and successful golfer.

can be a challenge for the very best players. Make a few practice swings and brush the ground just as you would do as if the ball were there. With over 60% of your strokes coming from inside of 100 yards, it is essential that you spend a proportionate amount of time on your short game as you practice. Putting and chipping will make up the majority of your game, so don’t fail to spend some time on these. Practice doesn’t make perfect, but it will help!

OAK MEADOWS GOLF TIP Peter Longo PGA Life Member Oak Meadows Teaching Professional NO SWAY, OK. Of the few fundamentals that are imperative to playing your best golf all the time, keeping the body centered over the ball throughout the entire backswing is among the most important.

July/August 2014

The proper backswing is a rotation of the shoulders and raising of the arms above the head while the rest of the body remains over the ball without moving to the right (opposite side for left handers). Most amateur golfers move the body a great deal on the backswing, called SWAY, in a misinterpretation of using the body for power. Excessive movement destroys muscle coil, power leverage and body position necessary for a solid strike. The key word on the backswing is to remain “STILL” and a good practice aide to eliminate the sway is to buy a slender stick called a driveway guide at the hardware store. Put it into the ground next to your right leg and make a backswing without moving into the stick. It’s an easy drill that trains you to stay in position. For more severe cases, make a guide with a few nails

Western Acres Golf Course

Butterfield Road, Lombard 630-469-6768 www.westernacres.com Five-Dollar Drill How to Hit Out of a Sand Trap Around the green is where we want the sand to make our shot and this is where we think of the five-dollar bill drill. Take a five-dollar bill or a piece of paper cut to similar length and place it in the sand. The size of the bill is the size of the impression we leave in the trap after we swing. Now, how much sand we take to go the different distances required around the green is a trial and error drill. This is one shot in golf (like putting) you need to get a feel for through practice. The basic setup is all one can give you and some guidelines. (1) Remember to take a little wider stance and set your feet. (2) Then shift your knees forward getting your weight up front (3) Make sure your hands are ahead of the ball. (4) Don’t quit on your swing. Take a full swing, commit to it and learn to trust the sand to do its job.

The Short Game The short game can make or break a golf score, especially when you miss the green on your approach shot and need to get close to the cup, to save par. Here are 4 things to help improve your chances, grip, stance, golf swing and club choice. Let’s start with the grip. Quite simply, you use the same grip you always have. All you need to remember is to choke down on your club. Choking down slightly is to give you better control. Now let’s talk about the proper stance. For chipping, bring together your feet, spacing 6-10 inches apart where you are comfortable in your balance. Draw back your front foot (foot closest to the target) about 4 inches. Play the golf ball off the heel of the front foot, with 60 percent of your weight shifting to your target side (front foot), with your knees bent, remaining bent throughout the swing. Push your hands forward at address, so the back of your upper hand is just in front (even) with the target side of the ball. This allows you to de-loft the club. Also at contact your hands are ahead of the ball, putting them in this placement at address helps make this happen. Your swing consists of a shorten backswing with an equally shortened follow through. Play these shots crisply, keeping the club head low on the back-swing. When chipping, your wrists are stiffer than normal and it is important to follow through (keep the club head moving) towards the target (don’t quit on the shot at impact). When you’re just of the green, think of it as a long putt and use your putting stroke (a little exaggerated to allow for distance). Club choice is a personal preference depending on the lie or length and distance of grass. Use anywhere from a 5 iron to a 9 iron. A 7 iron is a great club to try to get close, by rolling the ball to the cup (like a putt) instead of bouncing, the ball (flop shot). The rule of thumb to the old school chip and run is to land the ball 1/3 of the distance to the cup and let it roll out the other 2/3′s. This will vary depending on the greens, some being faster or slower than others, depending on the course. Give it a try. Next time you’re on the practice green, you might be surprised at the results.

ending a student to college has become an increasingly expensive endeavor. While the benefit of a good education can’t be overlooked, the cost of that education can be daunting! When prepping a new student for dorm and college life, make financially sound decisions to bolster savings — and to ease concerns. Saving, and being smart about money, can be practiced both by new students (college freshmen) and their parents. By proactively preparing to manage expenses, you’ll maximize savings. See below for five easy-to-implement cost saving tips while preparing for freshman year of college. 1. Be smart about textbook purchases. Renting textbooks saves you money, but be sure to consider purchasing if the textbook is for a major course. It can be useful to have those core textbooks down the road. When renting, price compare. Big-name rental companies aren't always the best option. Keep comparing until you find the lowest price.

2. Choose the most efficient meal plan for your personal circumstances. Many schools have multiple meal plan options, from a 7, 10, 14 meal/week to unlimited. Don't overpay for a plan if you have a picky eater or a student with food allergies who will have to prepare 42 education central

National Louis University Golden Apple Awards Reward Excellence in Teaching. For almost 30 years, the best teachers in Illinois have been recognized with a Golden Apple Award. The award is only given to 10 teachers each year and was founded on a simple idea: teachers deserve more recognition. Their contributions go far beyond the classroom. By better educating the next generation, they help build a stronger society now and in the future. One school has graduated more Golden Apple winners than any other. Since the Golden Apple Awards were first given out in 1986, National Louis University has had more alumni winners than any other school in Illinois. NLU boasts a robust teaching curriculum that has made it the go-to school for educators in the Chicagoland area. Along with traditional education programs, their Master of Arts in Teaching is specifically designed for people with undergraduate degrees in a non-teaching field to earn the degree they need to become a teacher. An excellent choice for those looking to change careers, the program creates eligible teachers in 12-18 months.

many meals in his dorm room. If you choose a 10 meal/week plan and your student goes broke ordering pizza and going to a campus shop for overpriced convenience food, you're losing major money. 3. Split expenses with a roommate. You may think you'll save money by dealhunting and buying upfront, but it could hurt you in the long run. Splitting the costs of large dorm items like mini-fridges, televisions, etc. can save you money. One roommate brings the TV, one brings the fridge, they both split the cost of cable, etc. saves the hassle of potentially over-buying. Wait until your student gets assigned a roommate and then discuss options. 4. Do one-stop dorm shopping. Use a dorm specialty store, like DormCo.com, to purchase all your dorm supplies! You can purchase reasonably priced college supplies — from bedding, to storage options, to trunks and seating — all in one place. DormCo.com offers flat-rate $2.95 shipping on your entire order. (Yes, you can ship a bedding package, mini-fridge, AND a trunk from DormCo.com for just $2.95.) This allows you to get a great deal on quality dorm supplies that will last your students throughout their years living in dorms, and you'll save BIG suburban family | subfam.com

NLU also offers specialized masters for teaching professionals. Earn a Master’s of Education (MEd) in highdemand subjects like Reading, ESL and Special Education help you elevate student outcomes and your career. NLU has been educating teachers for more than 125 years. Not every NLU graduate wins a Golden Apple, but many go on to long, tenured careers in education. Fall term starts September 15. Visit nl.edu to find out more. Midwestern Career College Midwestern Career College (MCC) is approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), and approved by the US Department of Education to participate in Financial Aid. MCC is different from Community Colleges; as we offer greater flexibility to accommodate needs of the adult population who manage work, family and other aspects of their adult lives; and simultaneously attend Career Education to enhance their career and earning potentials. Locations in Naperville, Chicago and Blue Island. For more information visit:www.mccollege.edu

on shipping costs, too. And let's be real: with the tons of other tasks on your plate to prep your child for college — tuition bills, scholarship applications and potential empty-nest syndrome — you'll be happy that you chose an all-inone online retailer like DormCo.com for your child's dorm necessities. 5. Teach students how to save. The number one way for a student to be financially unprepared for college is to know nothing about personal finance. If your family doesn't have a lot of disposable income — or you don't want to just be spoon-feeding your student piles of money — make him start saving before school and practice finance management. Students can take on an inexpensive monthly bill to learn budgeting (e.g. cell phone, iPad data fee, etc.), or allot them a certain budget that they HAVE to stick to. You can try and budget all you want, but it's up to the student — once he’s at school — to make sure that all your efforts weren't for naught. DormCo.com is the leading online college dorm supplies superstore. With more than 4,500 products, DormCo carries college necessities for college that you won’t find in stores. July/August 2014

Safer Sun for Everyone By Malia Jacobson

Tips, tricks, and secrets to help you enjoy summer without getting burned You stocked up on sunscreen, doled out sunglasses and floppy sunhats, and managed to coat your kids in gooey white SPF 30 before hitting the local swimming hole. But they still came home looking like lobsters, moaning and groaning over their painful sunburns. What gives? Sunscreens are now part of most kids’ summer routines, but that doesn’t mean that all kids are perfectly protected. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, sunscreens are often less effective than parents think, because they aren’t applied correctly. And parents sometimes skip protecting dark-skinned children and tiny babies. Here’s how to get the best-possible sun protection for your brood, starting now. 44 family wellness

Every Kid, Every Day Sun protection isn’t just for freckle-faced, blue-eyed kids, says Adelaide A. Hebert, M.D., professor and director of pediatric dermatology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. The sun doesn’t miss anyone. Sunburns may not be as visible on kids with darker complexions, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need SPF. Children with darker skin need to take the same sun safety precautions as their lighter-skinned pals. Choose Well Staring down the sunscreen aisle at the drugstore can fluster even the most informed parent. Natural, baby, spray, sweat-proof— each passing year brings new innovations and more confusion. How can parents quickly and easily choose a sunscreen that’s right for their brood? Forget about the multitude of subcategories and formulations, and focus on the two main suburban family | subfam.com

types of sunscreens: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens like Coppertone actually absorb ultraviolet radiation. Many conventional sunscreens fall into this category. Physical sunblocks like those made by California Baby are made with ingredients that physically block the sun’s rays. They’re becoming increasingly popular with parents seeking a more natural option. So which is best? The safest option, says Hebert, is to use both. Look for a combination product, like those made by Bull Frog or Helioplex. Or buy two, a conventional sunscreen and a physical sunblock, and layer them. Labeling Hype Once you’re in the habit of reading labels, you may notice that formulations marketed for aduls and children aren’t all that different. Manufacturers often market the same sunscreen product to both adults and children with different labels, says Hebert. So if your July/August 2014

they stay on your child and don’t get lost. Protective Fashion Photoprotective clothing is the next wave of sun protection. Brands like Coolibar, the first line to be certified by the Skin Cancer Foundation, offer clothing that blocks out 97 percent of the sun’s UV rays. These garments are great options, says Hebert, but any tightly woven, dark clothing will protect kids from the sun. To raise the protection factor for regular clothing, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends Rit Sun Guard. This laundry additive washes into fabric, giving clothing an ultraviolet protection factor (UPC) of 30 for at least 20 launderings. On the Nose The area many people miss when applying sunscreen? It’s as plain as the nose on their face. The nose is where dermatologists find most melanomas. “Think about where kids usually get pink—the nose,” says Hebert. So protect that cute sniffer now. Your child will thank you later.

10 Fun Ways to

W

Get Active with Your Child

tronics that our children are plugged into are the enemy of fitness. Set boundaries on their use and schedule electronic-free days or hours of the day to encourage activity.

ith childhood obesity rates doubling over the past 30 years, it's more important than ever to keep your child active and fit. No matter your child's age, you should always make time for them to stay active whether through sports or fitness activities. Perhaps the best way to get your child involved in activities during the summer is to participate along with them.

Riding a bike: Whether you ride bike around the neighborhood or to the park, biking is great exercise. Most children have a bicycle but many parents do not, so set a budget to get yourself a bike and ride with your children - and don't forget the helmets.

“Even though summer can be a time for relaxation, it’s important for our children to stay active in order to maintain a healthy weight, as well as reduce risks for high blood pressure, diabetes and numerous other conditions ,” said Patrick Mularoni, M.D., sports medicine physician at All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Walking every day: Get in the habit of taking a walk as a family after dinner before you sit down to watch TV or incorporate a walk into your family outings. Before you drag beach chairs and toys out when you arrive at the beach, leave all the gear in the car at first, put on the sunscreen and walk the beach. A short walk on the beach or around your neighborhood can be great exercise for everyone.

All Children’s Hospital provides a list of summer activities to help families focus on fitness while having fun. Hula Hooping: This is a fun activity for all ages and can be done outside or indoors and really gets kids and parents mid-sections moving. Dancing: Turn some music on during chores, household activities or even when the kids are starting to get a little sluggish. Choose upbeat music your kids enjoy to get their body moving.

Making an obstacle course: Whether it's a maze through furniture or broomsticks on chairs to crawl under, you can use various household objects to make an obstacle course. Time your child and encourage them to beat their best time with each run through the obstacles.

Setting "park days": Schedule days to go to the park or to go on walks. Children will look forward to knowing that there

is a specific day they can count on spending time with you outdoors. Don't forget a healthy snack and stay hydrated while outdoors. Playing with a ball: As simple as it seems, a game of catch or passing a ball with your feet can burn calories. Especially if you're out at the beach, don't let your child sit around playing in the sand the whole time - get them running around and catching a ball for a few minutes of easy exercise. Having electronic-free days: The elecsuburban family | subfam.com

Throwing a Frisbee: Frisbees are a fun and inexpensive way to get active with your child outdoors. A Frisbee's path of flight encourages children to run to make a great catch. Setting an example: You are your child's most important role model, so set an example for them. Start early and create an active lifestyle for children at a young age. Especially for teens, if they see you going for morning run every day or visiting the gym, they're more likely to get active themselves. July/August 2014
