Better Health. Inactivity increases your risk for physical disability and disease, yet 28% of American adults and 19% of kids age 6 to 17 are inactive today. People who spend more time outdoors are more active on average than people who spend less time outside. Ride bikes or start jogging to jumpstart your fitness routine. Hills, uneven terrain and wind resistance challenge your muscles and your mind.
pression. An analysis of 30 studies done in the last 26 years found you don’t have to break a sweat to get benefits from being outside. Even low-intensity outdoor activities, such as walking or gardening for 20 minutes, can be beneficial. In fact, the biggest increase in mood and self-esteem occurs in the first 5 minutes. So what are you waiting for? Putter around in the yard to feel instantly happier.

Body Image. If Zumba makes you feel more like a threefooted klutz than a Latin temptress, you’re not alone. Full-frontal mirrors and the presence of other people cause gym goers to focus on how they look while exercising instead of what they’re doing. In the natural environment, you’re better able to focus on how it feels to move your body and what your body can do. What’s not to like about that?
Renewed Focus. Research conducted at the University of Michigan shows the relaxed quiet of outdoor environments allows our brains to recharge. In nature – where we aren’t bombarded by text messages and to-do lists – we’re able to tune in to subtle details like budding leaves
and animal paw prints. The shift in stimulation increases people’s ability to focus attention on work-relevant technical details and improvesFILL memory. SUBFAM small 12.16:Layout 1 12/14/16

to get from food sources alone. This important nutrient is crucial for calcium absorption in the body, and low levels increase your risk of fracture and osteoporosis. Studies also link Vitamin D deficiency to asthma, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Soak up some rays to make more D. Experts say 5 to 30 minutes of sunshine two to three times a week should be enough for most people.

Fewer Symptoms of ADHD. A national survey of more than 400 parents of children with ADHD found those who regularly played outdoors in unstructured green spaces like parks and woodlands had less severe symptoms than kids who played indoors or on outdoor playgrounds with man-made structures. A nature walk or trip to the beach may be just what the doctor ordered.
Enhanced Creativity. Researchers from the University of Kansas found backpackers who spent 4 days in nature – unplugged from electronics – scored a full 50 percent better on a creative problem-solving test. It’s not clear whether time in nature or time out from technology – or a combination of both – was responsible for this impressive result. Lesson for you? Leave your cell phone at home. Or at least turn it off.
Less Stress. Outdoor environments aren’t created equal. Studies show a 50-minute walk in the park is more restorative than walking the same distance and duration on city streets. People who walked in nature reported feeling less time pressure and more positive feelings than urban walkers did. If a city stroll is your only option, take a friend. Those who walked with a buddy felt more invigorated after an urban outing. No matter what you do in the great outdoors, make sure to enjoy it with all your senses. Breathe deeply. Listen for birdsong. Look at cloud shapes. Smell the roses. Feel the ground beneath your feet and the wind in your hair. Claim your place in big, wide world. Nature is always waiting. 8 seasons

Countdown To A Stress-free Birthday Celebration By Christina Katz
P
lanning a memorable birthday event can be the highlight of your child’s year, if you maximize the fun and minimize the stress. The best way to increase the magic and decrease the madness is to use a handy checklist so you can start early and get ready gradually. Or if you want to plan your party in one fell swoop a few weeks ahead, this checklist will help you do that, too.
before your party date, brainstorm themes with your guest of honor. See sidebar for theme suggestions. Make Reservations. If there is one thing I have learned about popular party venues, it’s that they fill up early. Once you have your theme and know you will need a location away from home, get your reservations nailed down tight two-three months in advance.
I have been planning and hosting birthday parties for over a decade, and these steps will get you from vision to fruition. Follow these timing tips, and you’ll be able to keep a smile on your face from the day you start planning until the moment the final guest is picked up or dropped off.
Find Supplies Online. Shop local when you can to support your local economy, but for those hard-to-locate items, don’t burn up time ad gas searching for what you can easily find online. Generally speaking, one-stop party stores are not as prevalent as they used to be and you’ll likely be delighted by the variety you can find online. Just make sure to place your orders at least month early to allow for shipping time and returns if anything is not what you’d expected.
Choose A Theme. Always have a theme. Having a focus will help you plan and execute your party without a hitch. Several months
Send Out Invitations. Evite wins hands-down for quick and easy party invites. Just visit evite.com, select a theme, add in your guests’ e-mail ad-

dresses, and send your invitations. Two weeks notice is usually just the right amount of time. But if it’s a busy time of year, add another week or two.
Order The Cake. Cakes and cupcakes can get expensive when you make them from scratch. Besides, the kids will probably like the local big-box or grocery store sheet cakes just as much as homemade. Order one week ahead for pickup up on party day for the freshest results.
Tackle Your Local Shopping List. Despite ordering ahead online, you probably still have few items you need to pick up locally. Be sure to pick them up at least a week ahead in case you can’t find something and need to order it online after all.
Recruit Helpers. Why try to do everything yourself when you can have so much more fun at your party with plenty of helping hands standing by? See the sidebar for suggestions. March/April 2017

Then go ahead and tackle as much prep work as you can. Decorations? Food preparation? Party favors? Activity prep? Everything will go smoother on party day if you take care of as much as you can the day before. Party Down! Get a good night’s sleep. Allow at least two hours prior for set up and one hour afterwards for clean up.Then enjoy every memorable moment. Designate a party photographer, if your hands will be full to document the day.

Mom! It’s Time for School! By Mali Anderson
I
f you’ve been out of school for a while—be it a year or decades— returning to an academic environment can be daunting. But the trend of adults returning to school is on the rise. One study reports adult students (over 25 years old) make up nearly half of the new and returning student population on today’s college campuses.
So, if you’ve been dreaming of finishing your first bachelor degree, or are chomping at the bit to get your second graduate degree, there are more options than ever to help you attain that goal. Keep in mind, it can be a struggle to cope with financial responsibilities, children’s needs, household management and work, all while attending classes, but these are short-term sacrifices needed to achieve a long-range goal. Marci Nogueira, a working mother who was promoted from general manager to director after obtaining a graduate degree from Post University, says, “having my family see me in a different career light is incredibly rewarding. 18 education central
My family was able to see me engaged in the process, to know what it’s like to work hard, go to school, get an education, but also to advance in your career and apply leadership skills both at home and at work.” Have you decided to hit the books? Consider the following tips to help you get started on the delicate balance of returning to school and raising a family.
Do it because you want to
This sounds obvious but there are many pressures to attend school. Furthering your education needs to be important to you. Attending school because someone suggested it, or in hopes of one day making more money, could make it more difficult to finish. Study what you love and the passion will come through. We don’t all know exactly what we want to do, but everybody has interests. How do you spend your free time? What books and magazines do you read? Which class have you taken in the past that has stuck with you all this time? Follow these ideas and talk to advisors at the university to help define what you could study in order to make your ideal career path a possibility. suburban family | subfam.com
“Choose a specialization that you truly care about. The juggling act will be much more challenging for you if you don’t enjoy your field of study. A focus area you are passionate about will help you achieve success” says Dr. Savitri Dixon-Saxon, associate dean of Walden University’s School of Counseling and Social Service.
Consider a flexible program
We all have varying levels of support. If you have an encouraging spouse and an extended family willing to help, you may be able to attend a traditional degree program. If that is not a possibility, there are alternative methods such as part-time enrollment, low residency graduate programs and online classes. For instance, Nancy Hemenway, a working mother of two daughters, is pursuing a graduate degree at George Mason University. She says, “I can take some of my classes online, which helps me keep a flexible schedule. When I looked at programs, I wanted to be able to do a good portion of my grad work online but still have the connection to the university. I also looked for a program that would give me some time to finish. My plan is one course a semester including summer sessions. March/April 2017
So, realistically, I should be able to obtain my degree in 3 years.”
Reorganize your life
Scheduling a time and place to do your studying can help with self-discipline and time management. Just as young children thrive in routines, having a set time for your own studies—maybe once the kids are in bed—and a set location—a well lit table away from distractions like televisions and household duties—can assist parents in staying up-to-date with the assigned reading and papers needed to finish an advanced degree. Also, many schools have programs to assist adults in the transition from parent to parent and student. For example, UW-Milwaukee has a children’s center and a life impact program. The tuition at the children’s center can be adjusted to fit within a family’s finances and life impact provides resources, meeting groups and scholarships, designed specifically for parents returning to school. At the start of your first semester, reach out and ask faculty if they are aware of helpful study groups. Exchange email addresses with classmates as soon as school starts to set up a support system early. This way, if you miss a class, or there is a concept everyone but you gets, you won’t fall behind. Often, if you ask for help, you’ll be surprised how willing others are to supply it.
Questions to ask before returning to school How will school fit into my schedule?
There are a variety of programs available for non-traditional students. Would you be able to attend a low residency program? Would night or online classes be a possibility? Take a hard look at your planner and see where adjustments can be made. School is a big commitment and chances are things will have to be sacrificed. For instance, vacation time may be used for a low residency graduate program, or family dinners may be interrupted by Monday and Wednesday evening classes.
Can I afford it?
Once you have a school you’re interested in, ask about financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Check with the human resources department at your work about any programs they offer to reimburse educational expenses. Armed with this information, sit down with a fresh piece of paper and look over family finances. For many, an advanced degree will mean a tight year or two before a degree can be obtained. Remember, on top of tuition, you’ll need books, possible childcare and in many cases a new laptop. If the numbers truly don’t add up, start a savings fund while researching affordable schools and financial aid opportunities. Education enhances life, but financial stress can affect how well a student does in school, too. Figure out what works for your family, and stick to the budget.
Will I be able to work?
With more and more adults returning to school, many have found ways to continue working while studying. Would your current employer be open to flexible hours? Or can your position be reduced to part time? Do you know other parents who have been able to swing school and work? Ask around, you may be offered the ideal opportunity for your situation.

A
s 14 million children across the country head off to day and overnight camps this summer, they’ll return home with more than just a cute camp t-shirt. The summer camp experience can give kids an advantage in school and in life. Here’s how camp benefits kids:
“You learn to navigate through group dynamics, to barter, to keep one another happy, to be sensitive and support a friend who’s sad,” says James Spearin,YMCA senior vice president of youth development. “These skills transfer and build adults with strong character and leadership.”
Nurtures social skills
More camps are also working to offer healthier food choices for their campers. According to 2014 study in the American Journal of Health Behavior, camps that offer wholesome foods are more likely to turn out campers

who eat more fruits and veggies. Many resident and day camps now offer cooking and gardening tracks where kids learn how to prepare nutritious meals.
Eases the summer slide You know that old saying, “if you snooze, you lose”? In the absence of regular enrichment over summer break, research finds that kids typically lose as much as two months of grade level equivalency in math. Reading comprehension and spelling skills also take a hit during the summer. To help curb summer learning loss, many specialized camps offer educational opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) that make learning and problem-solving fun and interactive. Also look for camps geared toward reading, writing and the arts. March/April 2017
Provides a sense of achievement From rock climbing to whitewater rafting and horseback riding, summer camp gives kids a chance to try activities that they wouldn’t ordinarily get to try. “Trying new things in an encouraging environment creates a greenhouse for growing young leaders,” says Garret Perkins, director of Camp Kanakuk, a faith-based camp that offers overnight, day and family camps.
Enhances self-confidence According to an extensive study of camper outcomes conducted by Philliber Research Associates, 70 percent of parents report that their child gained self-confidence while at camp. Whether they work through homesickness or tackle an activity that pushed them outside of their comfort zone, kids walk away feeling a stronger sense of personal pride and self-reliance. “We use our activities and facilities as platforms to encourage kids in who they are and equip them to grow in confidence in who God has created them to be,” Perkins says. “With this newfound perspective, they become influencers in their own communities.” Helps them unplug. In a distracting digital world, camp offers valuable space where kids can slow down, connect and focus. “At Kanakuk, we remove the distraction technology offers and give campers the chance to plug into the great outdoors, try new sports and activities, make friends through shared experiences instead of shared social media platforms-and we see them come alive,” Perkins says.
day. Why? Kids say they aren’t interested, they lack access and are uncomfortable outside. In the meantime, they’re growing more and more attached to life in cyberspace and further detached from the natural world. “To connect with our woods and forests, our wildlife, our lakes and streams and oceans, our stars in complete darkness, all while depending on other campers and adults to keep one another safe is an experience unlike most others in life,” Spearin says.
Fosters teamwork
might learn to swim, sleep in a cabin and sing around a campfire, they’re rewarded with personal development skills that will help them in the classroom, in their relationships and eventually, the board room- or whatever their calling. “Those tangible experiences lead to building the foundations of stronger children who can lead others, show empathy, navigate through difficult group dynamics, value the differences in everyone, and give of oneself for the benefit of others,” Spearin says. “These are skills that the best in our society show throughout life.”
Camp facilitates an environment where kids learn that to succeed they must work together with their peers and their camp leaders. Whether they’re working to build a campfire together, playing a game, or preparing a meal, campers learn to problem-solve to accomplish their goals. Through teamwork, kids learn that they are each an integral part of the camp community where they feel a sense of acceptance and belonging.
Encourages personal growth While camp may simply seem like a quintessential summer pastime for kids where they

Builds friendships Away from the pressures, labels and social structure of school, one of the best parts of camp is the opportunity for kids to make new friends. “Some of the biggest benefits we saw from sending our children to Kanakuk were their new friendships, spiritual growth and just the opportunity for them to spend time with likeminded people away from worldly distractions,” says Dianne Shadwick, whose three, now grown, children began attending Camp Kanakuk at age 9.

poppy seed and are around in the spring and early summer, and larger adult ticks come later in summer and fall. 4. Most ticks crawl onto people from the grass, brush, bushy areas, and leaf piles. Have your children wear closed-toed shoes with socks (not sandals or flip flops). 5. The sooner a tick is removed, the better. If a tick is infected, the chance of transmission increases with time.
Below, we breakdown everything parents need to know about tick prevention and the best ways to educate their kids this summer – before heading off to camp.
• Ticks thrive in humid, dark, shady, wooded areas and taller grasses, leaf piles and along grassy creek beds. • Ticks do not drop on you from trees, jump or fly; they mostly attach at ground level and crawl up your leg. Let your kids know it’s best to stay in the middle of the trail when hiking. • Note: Many people get bitten in their own backyards, or close to home.
1. Prevention is key. Parents can protect their families from Lyme disease through daily tick checks and the use of tick repellent clothing. 2. Ticks are now in almost every state and most active in April-September. Each year, over 300,000 people in the US catch Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria from a tick. 3. Learn to identify ticks: They come in small (larvae), medium (nymphs) and large (adult female/male) sizes. Nymphs are as small as a
Three weeks before camp begins have theTick Talks and Tick Checks with your children so they learn how to be their own advocate and know when to ask for help. A tick bite is painless - ticks like to burrow into the skin and suck on a person’s blood, but you don’t feel a thing. If your child thinks they have a tick embedded, they should go straight to their counselor to get it properly removed.
• Wearing lightly-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks – long sleeves and pants are best. • You can purchase clothes that come treated with permethrin, a repellant that kills ticks on contact. • Don’t forget their shoes! Tick repellentsprayed shoes are the best defense against tick bites; just spray with Permethrin before the trip. • Sleeping bags and tents should also be sprayed. No repellent is 100% effective. But DEET and Permethrin are well-known and effective repellents against ticks. Repellent clothing is more effective and less toxic to people than DEET sprays or lotions. If you’re worried about potential tick-transmitted diseases, place the tick in a plastic bag after you remove it. If any symptoms develop, you can bring the tick to your doctor’s office so that it can be properly tested. Don’t let the fear of ticks keep your family from enjoying the outdoors this summer! Take these steps before you send them to camp for a little peace of mind. For more information, visit ProjectLyme.org.

he world of running is continually changing and the use of technology is just one of the areas that has made an impact on running in the modern day. We used to run in cotton t-shirts, shorts, and rubber shoes. Now we have sweatwicking tech shirts, compression shorts, and every type of shoe under the sun. Runners used to be lucky to go out with a watch that told them how long they were on the roads, now we have watches that track our runs, HR monitors that tell us how hard we are pushing ourselves and IPODs to distract us from the pain. While these devices allow us to train purposefully, they can also hinder the enjoyment of running and the awareness of our own bodies. Let’s review the pros and cons of some of the top technologies used by today’s runners: 36 fitness first
IPODS
Pros: Diversion: listening to music can pump you up and get you into a zone, breaking the monotony of the treadmill or long road Set the Pace: Playlists with up tempo songs can keep you going through a threshold run or a speed session Go Longer: Music can inject energy into you to push for that extra 2 miles. Motivation: Music is not the only thing you can listen to on your IPOD, motivational material can help keep your efforts high during your workout. Cons: Distraction: Running on the road or trail? Music can put you in serious danger when you cannot hear what is coming from behind or beside you. Dependency: If you rely too heavily on the noise from your IPOD it can become a crutch and with many races banning the use of iPods you could be setting yourself up for a poor performance. Slow Poke: If your music selection is slower it can hinder your tougher workouts as your body gets into rhythm with the slower tempo suburban family | subfam.com
Losing Touch: One of the best attributes of elite runners is their ability to tune into their bodies, to go easy when they need to and push it when they can. Music can distract you from your bodies natural signals leading to injury or burnout.
GPS Watches
Pros: Intensity: GPS provides you with pace per mile which allows you to train at the intensities you mean to train at, so you don’t overtrain or undertrain Mileage and Routes: GPS tracks your mileage and routes. This allows you to know how far you are going, need to go, and the breakdown of your splits. You can review where you may tire during a race and it keeps you honest with distances run. Race Execution: One of the biggest mistakes runners make is going out too fast in the beginning of the race, a GPS allows you the luxury of executing your race plan because you will know exactly how fast you go out, what pace you maintain throughout the race, and how far to the finish. Advanced Workouts: Many feature the ability to March/April 2017

downhill running on most treadmills, which makes it hard to train for such races as the Boston Marathon or get some of the benefits of eccentric quad contraction. Boredom: Researchers at the University of Stockholm found that when runners were allowed to set their own pace in an indoor treadmill run and an outdoor trail run, they ran significantly faster at the same perceived effort level outdoors which suggests running outside may be more effective for some. Expensive: Even if you do not buy a treadmill for your home, renting one or joining a gym costs a lot more than the $0 you spend to walk out your door. Moral of this Story: Technology is going to keep getting better and adding more information to our already clogged running logs. It’s fine to take advantage of these wonderful gadgets but make sure you have a few “free” runs a week when you just listen to your body. It knows best. Progress Report: HR Monitors allow you to check progress over time. As you become fitter your HR should be lower for a given speed or you can run faster for the same HR. Similarly, your resting HR should gradually lower, and if it spikes you know to take an easy day Hard/Easy Days: You can train specifically within your optimal HR zones on any given training day and training type. Helps both elites and inexperienced not to over train. Stimulus: Sometimes you don’t realize that you’ve slowed down. Your heart rate monitor can be there to tell you to take it up a little. It’s your own personal trainer, you can’t cheat your HR. Cons: Numbers Game: Runners get locked into heart rate training and let the number dictate their pace or whether their run was a success because they hit that certain HR average or max. Variability: There are a lot of factors that can cause your heart rate to artificially increase …weather, dehydration, anxiety and over training. If you could control everything, relying solely on the monitor might be all you need, but you can’t. Data Freak: Too much data can ruin your focus and distract you from your bodies signals and your environment. To have the ability to feel which HR rate you have in training vs. competition without the use of a heart rate monitor is best. March/April 2017

Have a low-fat, high-carbohydrate and low-fiber meal about three hours before the race to prevent any indigestion, fatigue or stomach discomfort while running. Avoid heavy meals the day before the race and only eat familiar foods on the day itself. Foods to eat
Bread/toast, bagel, peanut butter, fruit without skin (banana), pulp-free fruit juice or sports drink for a pre-race breakfast. Rice, pasta, lean meat, starchy vegetables, fruits for “carbo-loading” at least three days before the race. For hydration, drink 500 to 700 ml of fluid about three hours before the race. Foods to avoid
Deep fried foods, foods high in saturated fats (red meat, processed foods like bacon, sausages and pastries). Avoid dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) on race day if you have a history of gastrointestinal problems. Some marathon runners skip morning coffee as it is a diuretic. Because the body uses more energy digesting fatty foods, your race performance might suffer if you consume excess fats.

When to Hydrate
You’ve read all about how dehydration impacts performance, so let’s talk about what to drink, when and how. Drinking before you run
• take time to walk for a few steps to enable you to drink comfortably and avoid choking;
One way to minimize dehydration is to ensure that you begin a long run fully hydrated. In the days before a big race, it is a good idea to sip as much water as you can to keep your body topped up. On the day of the run, drink up to two hours before the start. Most experienced runners stop then, to avoid the need to urinate while they are running. You can begin drinking again immediately before the start.
On a hot day, you should regulate your temperature by splashing water over yourself as well as by drinking. You may want to pour a cup of water over your head (and especially down the back of your neck) to keep you cool. During the closing stages of a race – for example, during the last half an hour – cooling yourself this way may be more effective than drinking. It is also less likely to make you feel nauseus.
Drinking while running
Drinking while running is a skill, and you need to practise it during your training to work out what works best for you. Some tips are: • drink little and often to avoid a bloated feeling while you are running;
Drinking after running When you have finished running, you should aim to replenish the fluid you have lost. Because you don’t absorb all the fluid you drink, it is recommended that you drink about half as much again as the volume of fluid you have lost.

Hand and Foot and Mouth! Oh My! By Alexa Bigwire
N
ot to be confused with hoof and mouth disease, a very nasty disease that affects cattle, Hand Foot and Mouth is a virus that your toddler or preschooler (and sometimes even older children) may contract this spring. You’ll want to be on the lookout for a variety of symptoms, of which your child may experience some or all. Be prepared for your children to have completely different symptoms. What exactly is Hand Foot and Mouth disease? HFMD is a highly contagious viral illness most prevalent during the spring and fall seasons. HFMD usually affects infants and children younger than five years of age. It has a wide variety of symptoms, including fever, sore throat, vomiting, reduced appetite, sores, and red bumps. The child may have a variety or all symptoms, or may carry and pass the virus with no symptoms at all. There is currently no vaccine to prevent it, and not much that can be done once the child has it, beyond keeping them comfortable and waiting it out. How serious is Hand Foot and Mouth Disease? It’s more gross than serious, and the itching can be extremely irritating. HFMD can cause high fever. A large concern for many children is dehydration and not eating if the sores in their mouths and throat hurt too badly. (And in rare cases they can develop some very scary, fatal complications - like brain inflammation, and polio like diseases.) Less commonly known side effects - a week or two after the virus is gone, your child may lose their fingernails and toenails and they may also have the skin peel off of their hands and feet. How does it spread? It is highly contagious and can be passed March/April 2017
through mucus, saliva, the blister fluid, and feces. You are most contagious for the first week. • close contact, such as kissing hugging, or sharing cups and eating utensils, • coughing and sneezing, • contact with feces, for example when changing a diaper, • contact with blister fluid, and • touching objects or surfaces that have the virus on them. How long should your child stay home from school? • Follow all fever rules - don’t send them to school within 24 hours of the fever • Watch the blisters. If they have oozing blisters that can’t be covered, keep them home • For little ones, keep them home until it’s cleared up if that’s possible. There’s no need to infect other children. Treatment: It’s a virus, and unfortunately, just has to run its course. However, the pain and discomfort suburban family | subfam.com
can be treated with over the counter, age appropriate fever reducers and pain relievers. Prevent dehydration with plenty of fluids. Ice cream, jello, Popsicles, and so forth are good for sore throats. Can HFMD be prevented? To prevent the spread of HFMD, follow the same protocol as you would for preventing flu or any other virus. • Wash hands frequently with warm, soapy water • Avoid contact with infected people • Disinfect surfaces regularly if someone has been sick Will my child get this more than once? Very generally speaking, once your child has had HFMD, they should build an immunity. However, there are multiple different strains, and it is possible that your child could become ill again with a different strain. Visit the CDC for all you could possibly want to know about hand foot and mouth disease! family wellness 51
