ummer may be seen as the outdoor season, but autumn also offers lots of
opportunities for outdoor fun. Try some of these family activities, and fill your kids’ senses with delight. Enjoy a color tour. National parks and forests are the places to be in the fall. Contact your nearest National Park, and find out when fall colors will be at their peak and recommended routes for picturesque views. Host a campfire cookout. If outdoor fires are permitted in your area, have the kids round up neighborhood friends for a cookout. Hot chocolate, marshmallows, and s’mores are a traditional way to top off the season. Have everyone take turns telling stories around the fire. If you have little ones, check-out library books with autumn themes to read to the youngsters. 8 seasons
Attend a football game. Gather your blankets and head to the stadium. High school, college, and pro football games are great fun for kids and parents alike. Take along a bag of popcorn and thermos of hot cocoa, then snuggle up and get ready to cheer on your team. Visit an apple orchard. Take your kids apple picking, and top off the day with cider and doughnuts, a hayride, and end-of-the-year picnic. Make a scarecrow. What’s fall without a scarecrow on your porch? It is easy to make. Just buy a couple of bails of straw, then have each family member gather some old clothes and hats. Stuff it using string to tie off the hands, feet, and head. Walk in the woods. As flies and mosquitoes retreat, it’s the perfect time of year for a walk in the woods. Look for animals scurrying about gathering for the long, cold months ahead. Don’t forget your binoculars. suburban family | subfam.com
Contact state and local parks for wooded trails near you. Leaf fun. Remember as a kid diving into the crisp fall leaves? Grab the rakes, and have your youngsters pitch in. Pile up the leaves to jump in, build a fort, and even have a leaf fight. Find a festival. Apple, pumpkin, fall harvest, and many more festivals are found this time of year featuring food, arts and crafts, kids’ games, pony and wagon rides, and more. Visit your local events website online to see what’s coming up. Visit a pumpkin patch. Begin a family tradition of picking your pumpkins from a patch. After cleaning out the pumpkins, make roasted pumpkin seeds, a yummy treat that kids love. Rinse the seeds, pat them dry, and coat with melted butter. Spread the seeds on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with salt, and bake at 350 until golden brown. Be sure and stir them occasionally. September/October 2019
Bird migration watch. As fall fills the air, many birds begin to head south. Contact State and National parks or your Department of Natural Resources for recommended birding locations as well as bird festivals. Shift through a cornfield maze. Kids delight in finding their way through cornfield mazes. To find a maze near you, visit cornmazesamerica.com/ Plant perennials and bulbs. Let your kids try out their green thumbs. After all, fall is the time of year to plant perennials and flower bulbs. Let your kids choose some plants from the gardening store, and give them the opportunity to help design the garden. A hand-painted rock or two adds color until the spring blossoms bloom. Take a railroad excursion. With the colors of fall blazing under bright blue skies, a scenic railroad excursion is a sure bet. Check your local travel agency for excursions in nearby. Hold a pumpkin sale. If you have little entrepreneurs, have them set up a pumpkin stand in your front yard. Find an orchard where pumpkins are cheap, then have your kids purchase a small stock to sell for a higher price. Hot cocoa,
September/October 2019
baked pumpkin seeds, or doughnuts make good commercial additions to the stand.
Tall Grass Arts Association Presents:
Horseback rides. Head to the stables and enjoy the fall colors on horseback. For horse rentals visit horserentals.com/index.html
The 64th Annual Park Forest Make a bird feeder or house. Kids will enjoy the carpentry experience and marvel at watching birds make use of their creation. Kits are available in hobby stores and online for making bird feeders. To make one from scratch, visit your library and check out a book on how to build a birdhouse, or find free instructions on the Internet. Parades and marching bands. Find out when your local college or high school will hold its homecoming parade. Be sure to take a blanket and snacks, and enjoy the colorful floats, majorettes, cheerleaders, and marching band. Also, don’t forget the spectacular Thanksgiving Day parades.

River Road, Des Plaines 847-803-GOLF www.GolfCenterDesPlaines.com Deliberate Practice Everyone knows that “practice makes perfect”, but it’s important to remember that practice also makes permanent. We often refer to beginning golfers as “blank

canvases”, for the fact they have no bad habits as to how they use their body to swing a golf club. Possibly they have played other sports, and have athleticism, but that does not guarantee that they will naturally have good form in their golf swing. How do we make sure that we are practicing deliberately and turn “perfect” into “perfect and permanent”? Here are three practice methods that can help you:
2) Use Today’s Technology: Video during practice allows a player to verify that they are performing their swing with the proper mechanics through visual feedback.
1) Have One Goal. Whether it be executing a bump and run, or fixing your grip, practice with the mindset of fixing one thing not your entire game.
Stay focused, stay disciplined with deliberate practice and your swing can become permanently perfect!

3) Practice Like You Play: Emulate the golf course when on the range by going through the same exact routine before hitting the ball.

alloween has always been an exciting holiday for kids. They get dressed up, hang out with friends and know that a simple “Trick or Treat” means free candy. As our kids hit middle school, costumes are no longer cool and their days of trick or treating reluctantly come to an end. In an effort to keep the holiday fun for teens, why not throw a party? I know what you thinking – “How am I going to come up with entertainment that is not lame and that will keep everyone amused?” Simple! Check out these ten teen approved party games that will challenge, gross out and deliver hours of good times and laughter. But beware, if the kids have too much fun at your party, they will want you to host again next year!
Go Fishing
– Fill a small swimming pool with water and live goldfish. On the bottom of the pool, place several marbles. Set as many chairs around the pool as will fit. Ask your guests to sit in the chairs and remove their shoes and socks. That’s right, they are going fishing for marbles with their feet. Add a little fear and anticipation by blindfolding the participants or turning off the lights.
Pumpkin Face – Have the kids put a layer
of Vaseline on their face. Pour several cheeseballs on a long table. On go, each person has to cover their face with cheese balls without using their hands. Set the timer for one minute and the person with the most cheeseballs wins. This is a great photo opportunity! 36 celebrate!

Plastic Wrap Mummy Race – Break the group into teams. Choose one person from each team to wrap in plastic wrap (from the neck down). As soon as the mummy is wrapped, the team has to gently lower him to the ground and roll him down the race course. When he gets to the finish line, you need to stand him back up and completely unwrap him. For a longer race, rewrap the next person and race back down to the other end.
Create a Crime Scene
– Create a bag of things found at a mock crime scene but don’t include obvious murder weapons like knives or rope. Instead, find silly things like an apple, wooden spoon, stuffed animal, a children’s book and a magnet. Break everyone up into groups of 4 or 5. Each group has to create a crime scene based on the items in the bag and present it to the group. This is a great activity to do while you are serving dinner.
Halloween Egg Hunt – Fill plastic eggs
or plastic pumpkins with candy and hide around the room or outdoors.Take advantage of the early setting sun and search for the eggs with flashlights. Try adding a few tricks instead of treats and fill some of the eggs with worms, crickets or cow eyes from the local butcher shop. (Be sure to open the eggs outside!)
side a clean disposable diaper and place on the table. Have the kids smell or taste what’s in the diaper to determine what candy bar it is.
Fear Factor
- Egg Roulette – Hard boil 12 eggs and let cool in refrigerator. Place eggs on a table in front of your guests. Tell the kids that there is one raw egg among the hardboiled eggs. Challenge them to find it by choosing an egg and smashing it on their forehead. Get your cameras ready. Their expressions will be priceless!
LCR – This is a great way to end the night. LCR is a popular dice game that can be played with any size group. You can either purchase the LCR dice or use regular dice and determine which number is L, C and R. Normally you would play with chips or coins, but since it is Halloween, let’s use candy. Every player starts with three candies. As you roll, the candy goes to the left, right or into a bowl in the center. The winner is the person holding the last piece of candy! Pam Molnar is an avid party planner and mom of three. All of their parties include good food, lots of laughter and of course, games! Follow her other party ideas on Etsy at Pam’s Party Printables.
Bubble Gum Pie
– Fill a pie plate with whipped cream and bury a couple pieces of bubble inside. Using only their face, the first kid to find the bubble gum, chew it and blow a bubble, wins.
Guess the Candy Bar – Melt 5 different
candy bars in the microwave. Be sure to crush up any large pieces. Place the melted mess insuburban family | subfam.com

alloween treats can be delicious but often full of too much sugar, additives and ingredients we can’t even pronounce. Simple Mills created this ‘scary good for you’ clean recipes for the Halloween Season, free of gluten, grain, soy, GMOs, excessive sugar and anything artificial.
Your Halloween monster mash wouldn’t be complete without a plate of these Spooky Peanut Butter Monster Eye Cookies. Prep Time: 15 min + decorating time Cook Time: 10 minTotal Time: 30 minYield: 28 Cookies
INGREDIENTS:
1 large egg ½ cup creamy natural (unsweetened) peanut butter ¼ cup coconut oil ¼ cup water 1 box Simple Mills Vanilla Cake Mix ½ cup (2 scoops) Ancient Nutrition Organic Peanut Butter Bone Broth protein powder 1 tub Simple Mills Vanilla Frosting Naturally-colored red food coloring Dark chocolate chips
INSTRUCTIONS:
PREHEAT the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment or a nonstick pad. BEAT the egg, then beat in the peanut butter, oil, and water until combined in a large mixing bowl. STIR in the cake mix and the protein powder and stir until a dough forms. DIVIDE the dough into 1 Tablespoon portions and roll each into a ball. PLACE each ball on the prepared baking sheet and use your thumb of the end of the handle of a wooden spoon to create a deep well in the center of each ball. REPEAT with the remaining dough, making sure to space each ball about 1 1/2” apart on the cookie sheet (the cookies will spread slightly). BAKE for 10-12 minutes. When you remove the cookies from the oven, they will have risen and the well in the center may not be very deep. If this is the case, immediately (while they are still warm and soft) poke the cookies again to re-establish the well in the center. COOL the cookies on the baking sheet for 38 celebrate!

10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. PREPARE the decorations while the cookies are baking: divide the can of frosting between two small mixing bowls. Stir each until the frosting is smooth. ADD naturally-colored powder or gel red food coloring to one of the bowls. The amount will vary, depending on what brand/ product you use, but use enough to get it as red as you can. If using a powder color, it may dry out the frosting too much. ADD a few drops of milk or water to get it back to a spreadable consistency. PLACE the red frosting in a piping bag fitted with a star tip, and the white frosting in a piping bag fitted with a round tip. DECORATE (once the cookies have cooled completely): touch the star tip against the well in the cookie and squeeze firmly, pulling away from the cookie as you squeeze, so that the frosting forms a bulge. This is the bloodshot effect. Then gently touch the round tip to the red frosting and squeeze, pulling away slightly, to create a white dollop on top of the red frosting. This is the white of the eye. PLACE a chocolate chip in the center for the pupil. REPEAT with the remaining cookies. OPTIONAL: place the cookies in the fridge for 30-60 minutes, so that the frosting firms up before serving.
TIPS:
You can use any food coloring you prefer, but we used one packet of Color Kitchen’s beet red from their cupcake coloring set. It can be found on Amazon. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. If you don’t have piping bags, just use 2 zip top bags with one corner cut off of each to pipe the frosting. Start Your Kids Off On the Right Foot This School Year

he mark of a new school is often anticipated with a mix of emotions for kids and parents alike, ranging from exhilaration to anxiety. Kids are excited to wear their new clothes, see their classmates, and participate in extracurricular activities. Parents are proud to see their kids reach another milestone and look forward to exciting new experiences for their growing child.
who don’t get enough quality sleep are at risk for mood swings, anxiety, hyperactivity, and aggressive behavior.
But the school year can bring about challenges as well that leave kids and parents anxious. So follow these tips to get your kids off to a good start and keep them on course.
• Remove media from bedrooms at night. • Set a curfew of 2 – 3 hours before bed for caffeine. • Keep bedroom temperatures 3 degrees cooler at night than during the daytime. • Make sure your kids have plenty of blankets. • Have your child take a hot bath before bed. • Have kids eat a light, high carbohydrate snack before bed such as fruit or white grains. Balance is essential During the school year, kids have a lot on their plate. In addition to school, they have family, friends, homework, chores, extracur-
Kids need their Zs Sufficient sleep is essential to proper brain function. When kids are deprived of sleep, it can interfere with their memory, attention, and ability to learn. Insufficient sleep can also adversely affect health. It contributes to type 2 diabetes in children and teens. Mental health is also affected by sleep. Kids September/October 2019
Unfortunately, because teens’ circadian rhythm keeps them alert later at night, early school start times don’t help. But getting plenty of sleep is crucial. Kids ages 6 to 12 need 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night, and teens require 8 to 10. To help your kids fall asleep better, set a curfew and regular bedtime for school nights accordingly. On weekends, kids want to stay up later. Just try not to let their weekend sleep patterns veer too far from their weeknight routine. Otherwise, it’ll be a challenge to get them back on track. Also:

ricular activities, and perhaps a part-time job. But balance is essential to your child’s wellbeing. The reason such imbalance sometimes develops is that parents see other families involved in so many extracurricular activities. As a result, parents think they’re not doing their job if their kids aren’t always on the go. Because kids want to make their parents happy and proud of them, kids often don’t speak up when they feel overwhelmed. Structured activities do provide valuable benefits to kids. Still, they need free time to play and socialize as well. When kids lack balance in their lives, it can cause them stress and interfere with their ability to sleep and optimal functioning. It can also affect their mental wellness. Pay attention to emotional health According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adolescents has a mental health condition. A significant percentage of younger kids also experience mental disorders. Conditions range from anxiety and depression to attention deficit disorder, and in the later teens, bipolar and schizophrenia. School success is strongly tied to kids’ emotional wellness. Unfortunately, when kids exhibit behavioral changes, parents often aseducation central 39
sume it’s just a childhood or adolescent phase as opposed to a mental health problem. Child and family therapist, Donna M. Carollo, LMFT, says when a child or teen “exhibits symptoms of depression for over a month, it’s time to seek professional help.” Carolla points out a few signs to watch for that could indicate depression or another mental illness. These include “a child wanting to socially isolate, exhibiting excessive fatigue, a change in appetite, a lack of desire to do any of the fun things they used to, or a sudden drop in academic performance.” Drugs and alcohol misuse or abuse may also be symptoms of a mental health condition. If you suspect your teen is misusing or abusing substances, intervention is crucial. You can make an appointment with a mental health care professional or contact an addiction treatment center for help. You can also contact the local public behavioral health care agency for child and adolescent mental health or substance abuse concerns. Limit cell phone use According to a 2018 survey by Pew Research Center, more than half of kids between 13 and 17 worry they spend too much time on their cell phones. Just over half also say they’ve taken steps to reduce their use of it. Fifty-seven percent have made efforts to limit their time
on social media and 58% to limit video games. Cell phone addiction has become a growing problem among adolescents. According to Carollo, “Something is considered an addiction when the chosen behavior causes an individual to suffer in many other valued areas of their life.” She cautions, however, that “a parents values and a child’s values don’t always sync.” Still, says Carollo, “if the cell phone is interfering with face-to-face family and friend time, school work, sleep, or exercise” that’s when it’s time for parents to enforce some guidelines. To gain kids’ cooperation, ask them to help you create the rules. Also, allow your adolescent an hour or two of daily phone time because socialization is an integral part of teen development. At night, however, require all phones are on their chargers outside of bedrooms. Other helpful rules include no phones during mealtime and that chores and homework must be completed before kids can have their phones. Also, set consequences for breaking cell phone rules. Loss of their cell phone for a specified period is an appropriate measure. Get academic help If your child has struggled academically in the past or grades begin to suffer, your kid may need help. Any of the above issues, among other things, can lead to academic problems.
Some kids struggle with retaining information, understanding concepts, or have a different learning style. Also, learning disabilities can affect kids of all intelligence levels and cause academic challenges. If your child is struggling in one or more subjects, ask your child’s teachers about their observations. Then talk to the school principal. Public schools are required to provide an assessment upon request. If your child attends a private school that doesn’t offer assessments, you can request it through your public school district. Whatever the reason for your child’s school difficulties, there are ways to help. First, establish a regular homework time. Also, set up a quiet, distraction-free area as a homework station and furnish it with a desk or comfortable chair. Kids’ rooms provide too many distractions. Plus the ability to close their door can hide that they’re not on task. Also, consider a tutor. Some schools offer free one-on-one or afterschool group tutoring. Another option is to ask a trusted family member, neighbor, or friend who might be interested in helping. You can find free online video tutorials at KhanAcademy.org as well. Another option is to hire a tutor. Look for local tutoring companies, or visit TakeLessons. com or Care.com to find local tutors.
Gifted: Encouraging Your Child’s Natural Talents By Malia Jacobson
W
has a big influence on their long-term happiness; Harvard research shows that participating in hobbies as a child is linked to increased happiness in adulthood. Read on for age-by-age guidance on helping kids find and enjoy their natural gifts.
Turns out, how parents approach the development of kids’ passions and interests
EARLY YEARS 0-5: Adore it? Explore it. New parents are flooded with options for early classes and activities, from pee-wee soccer to music class to toddler ballet. But now is not the time to focus on skill development, says Hillsborough, North Carolina-based parenting coach Whitney MacDonald, M.Ed., a former educator and athletic coach who founded creatingmen. com. Instead, early childhood is a time to immerse your child in real-world experiences and observe what ignites her interest and excitement. Swap out structured classes and sports teams for less structured, more exploratory experiences like toddler gym, family swim, library story
hether you live with a young chess whiz, a budding baseball star or an aspiring actor—or all three— you’ve probably pondered the best way to encourage your child’s natural gifts and abilities. When is the right time to begin lessons? How can parents encourage persistence, without pushing? And is it even possible to balance the interests and pursuits of all the kids in your care?

time, naturalist-led hikes, and live theater, music performances and museum exhibits that align with your child’s interests. Some parents fear that skipping out on toddler classes might hurt their child’s early academic development. In fact, the opposite may be true, says Maria Castelluccio, who leads the academically advanced Léman prep school in Manhattan. “Open-ended exploration of the arts forms the foundation of early literacy— reading, writing and language development,” she says. “Exposing your child to music and visual art at a young age develops unique opportunities for self-discovery and creativity.” ELEMENTARY YEARS 6-12: Lesson learned In early elementary school—grades one, two, and three—activity exploration should still focus on fun, says Whitney MacDonald. Around age 10, though, many kids are ready

to begin formal lessons, provided that their participation is fueled by their own interest, and not by parental pressure. It’s important to find the right coach or instructor for your child, one who emphasizes the importance of practice over performance, injects a sense of fun and playfulness and communicates well with parents. When an instructor or coach promises to turn your child into a concert pianist, a competitive swimmer or a vocal superstar, steer clear.
they’ve often hit their stride in their activity or activities of choice, juggling academic commitments with team sports, lessons, practice and performances. When families have more than one child, parents juggle scheduling, transportation needs and financial commitments for a number of different pursuits. And because the time and money required for different activities can vary widely, one child’s talent might steal the spotlight most of the time.
Lessons can carry an additional commitment to practice—and practice is all too often accompanied by whining, procrastination and parental frustration. Keep practice sessions brief and plan them for periods when your child’s focus is likely at its best: After breakfast on a weekend, not after a long day at school. When a child is truly resistant to practicing, consult with the instructor about ways to encourage progress without piling on pressure. And consider that your child might not be ready for lessons, after all.
When it comes to investing time and money in kids’ activities, parents of siblings should think about equity, not equality, says Whitney MacDonald. While the time required for kids’ different pursuits might not ever balance out perfectly, it’s important to make each child feel like they are equally valued in a parents’ eyes. “It’s about saying, ‘OK, your sister has this dance thing, but I’m going to make dedicated time just for you.’ The child has to feel that inner gesture, and to know that they’re just as important as their sibling. Because all children ultimately want connection with and recognition from their parents.”

BENEFITS OF MULTIPLE EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES By Cheryl Maguire
I
“
’m bored,” my 11-year-old daughter grumbled as she collapsed on to the couch. It was a rare unscheduled moment in her life. I cringed as I recalled what can occur when she has a spontaneous second. At the age of three, I assumed she was quietly playing with her toys only to discover the entire wall was covered with a new crayon drawn mural. We are both happier now she is enrolled in art classes. She prefers being busy which is why she partook in six different extracurricular activities this past spring. Her interests ranged from sign language class to swim team. Besides avoiding boredom (and messes) there are many benefits to having scheduled activities for your child. Research by NCES states that students who participated in after-school activities had better attendance, higher levels of achievement, and aspirations to higher levels of education. Better Academic Performance Even though my daughter was in six dif-

ferent clubs or sports, she received all A’s in her academic classes. By participating in extracurricular activities, a child is able to learn new skills which can be applied to the school setting. For example, my daughter was in the garden club and she used the information she learned about plants in her science class. Sports such as basketball, baseball and football use statistics, addition/subtraction, probability, and geometry which can be applied to math class. A number of research studies found students who participate in extracurricular activities perform better in school. Douglas Reeves studied data at Woodstock High School and found students who were in three or four extracurricular activities during the year had dramatically better grades than those who participated in no extra-curricular activities. There was a study done by the College Board, which found high school extracurricular participation is correlated with higher SAT scores, SAT math by 45 points and SAT verbal scores by 53 points. More Adaptable If a child is participating in more than one activity, they will also experience more than one coach or teacher who will have different rules September/October 2019
and expectations. They will have the opportunity to meet kids with a range of personalities and interests. These interactions will teach a child how to be adaptable to multiple people and situations. Maddi and Deborah Khoshaba’s training guide, Resilience at Work, discussed the importance of being adaptable and how when adaptable people lost their jobs they thrived due to their ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Being adaptable is a skill which can be beneficial both in the school or work setting. Better Social Skills Children will gain social skills both from the person in charge of the activity or sport and by interacting with their peers. They also have the opportunity to learn about teamwork by either playing a sport together or doing a group class such as a musical for drama.

Decreased Risk of Obesity According to the CDC, obesity affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents for the past decade. If a child participates in a sport they will be more active which leads to better health benefits from being physically fit. Even if a child did a club or an after-school activity they will be more active than if they watched TV or played video games. How to Balance Your Child’s Schedule Sometimes, even for my daughter, you can have too many activities. I’m always cognizant of her energy level. If she needs to skip an activity once in a while, I let her. Or when I noticed she wasn’t enthusiastic about going to gymnastics anymore, we both decided it would be best not to sign up for the next session. Most importantly you want to make sure your child is happy and definitely not bored. September/October 2019

THE BACKTO-SCHOOL CHECKLIST
F
rom completing physical exams to school supply shopping and establishing an earlier sleep schedule, the back-to-school transition can feel overwhelming. It’s important to take steps to minimize any anxiety your family may be experiencing as you prepare for your new routine. That’s why DuPage Medical Group has put together a list of medical exams your child may need before heading back to school and tips for keeping your child mentally and physically healthy. Depending on your child’s age, he/she may need a variety of exams before heading back to school, including: A physical exam During a physical exam, your pediatrician will assess your child’s current health, including any chronic medical conditions, allergies, asthma, weight and nutrition.Your pediatrician will also share recommended vaccines and address any attention or behavioral concerns you have. Certain extracurricular activities may also require a sports physical to ensure your child is healthy enough to engage in more strenuous physical activity. An allergy or asthma assessment If your child suffers from allergies or asthma, meet with an allergist annually to develop an action plan and make any necessary adjustments to medication dosage. The action plan will outline what actions and emergency medications need to be taken in the event of an allergic reaction or asthma attack at school. Talk with your child and his/her teachers to 46 family wellness
ensure everyone understands the plan and how to minimize risk of an allergy exposure or asthma attack. An eye exam Completing a dilated eye exam provides information about the health of your child’s eyes and how they work together. Even if your child has 20/20 vision, if their eyes are not working together properly, they may experience double vision, eye strain and/or headaches – making near-sighted activities such as reading, comprehension and writing more difficult. Children without eye or vision problems should receive an eye exam at least every two years, while those with glasses or corrective lenses should be seen every year. A skin exam Acne and other skin-related concerns may make your teen feel self-conscious or anxious about heading back to school.Washing the face twice each day with a gentle cleanser, avoiding rough or abrasive products and applying sunscreen can help avoid acne flare-up. Overthe-counter products such as oil-free or noncomedogenic facial moisturizers and products containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can also help reduce breakouts. Acne products can take about a month to produce results, so be sure to establish a skin care routine several weeks before heading back to class. In addition to completing physical exams, it’s important to address other factors that may impact your child’s health, such as: Establish healthy sleep habits Ensuring your child gets enough sleep is essential to their overall health. Most kids need between nine and ten hours of sleep each night. Start preparing your child for their new schedule two weeks ahead of time by suburban family | subfam.com
gradually shifting their evening and morning routines. Try turning off all electronic devices one hour before bedtime to help promote a restful night of sleep. Check their bag An overfilled, heavy backpack can cause poor posture and back and/or neck pain. To avoid this, proper fit is key. Choose a bag with padded, adjustable shoulder straps and ensure it runs from shoulder height to about two inches past the waistline. You can also perform a quick weight check by trying to lift the bag yourself and removing any unnecessary items if it feels too heavy. Watch for signs of stress Children and teens can be sensitive to stress and anxiety, especially at the start of the school year. Closely monitor your child for signs of anxiety, stress and changes in mood or behavior. Arranging play dates with classmates throughout the summer can help your child strengthen friendships that will make starting school feel less scary. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can also relieve stress and keep your child feeling their best. Planning ahead, whether it’s scheduling your child’s physical exams or introducing a new sleep schedule, can make a big difference in your family’s back-to-school transition. P
arents know what foods their children like (and are aware of the foods they refuse to eat). But when our children deem certain foods as an enemy – or use the word diet at a young age — we need to be careful about how we tread. According to a study by the National Eating Disorder Association, 62% of female teens are trying to lose weight and 59% are actively dieting. Of male teens, 29% are trying to lose weight and 28% are actively dieting. Clearly, weight is on our kids’ minds AND they are trying to manage it themselves — without all the necessary facts. Yet, research shows that diets — restricting calories or even entire food groups — do more harm than good. Dieting can lead to weight gain over time and may increase the risk of developing an eating disorder. If you think your child is developing an unhealthy relationship with food or if you are concerned with changes in your child’s weight, here are 5 discussion strategies that can help.
Have a conversation with your child about the importance of variety and balance in daily food choices — instead of discussing weight. Avoid describing foods as “good” or “bad” and create 48 family wellness
space for an “all foods fit” model. Also, make sure that your conversation is age-appropriate. As an example, talk to young children about eating foods of all different colors. Older children, on the other hand, may understand discussions about the different food groups.
well as the need for rest days. Invite all family members to participate in movement as a new family routine. Walk, instead of drive, to a local spot, enjoy a bike ride together, or turn household chores into a game (the first one to complete a chore in 20 minutes wins a prize!)
Include your children in meal planning. This offers you opportunities to discuss balanced nutrition. And, have them pack their own lunches. If your child is younger, or new to packing lunches, make a checklist for them — to ensure that they are incorporating a variety of foods.
The timing of these conversations is very important. Find private time outside of a meal when everyone is relatively calm and there are minimal interruptions. And approach these conversations from a place of loving concern, asking questions instead of making assumptions.
Here’s an example: if a child requests a piece of cake after dinner, offer them a slice of cake. If the child requests a second piece of cake, use the opportunity to discuss how food impacts our health. Share how our bodies process sugar and how our bodies need a variety of nutrients to run most effectively. Remind the child that the cake will be there tomorrow and they can have that slice with lunch or dinner — again, incorporating balance.
Focus on healthy behaviors rather than weight. Conversations centered around weight may result in feelings of shame — potentially increasing negative eating behaviors. Instead, talk about the value of movement and exercise, as suburban family | subfam.com
Remember, you aren’t expected to be an expert in nutrition, but you are an expert in your child. If your child speaks freely about their weight concerns, allow space for them to process their feelings. There is a difference between other people being concerned about your child’s weight versus your child’s concerns about their own body. Listen for that distinction and provide validation and empathic listening. Celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day By Cheryl Maguire
M
ark your calendar for September 25, to remind yourself (or a woman you know) to celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day. Over 50,000 women of all ages will participate in events across 500 different nationwide communities for the 18th Annual National Women’s Health & Fitness Day.You can check your local senior centers, hospital, health club, or park and recreation department to see if the venue is hosting an event.
As a mother, it is easy to focus on caring for your children instead of your own health and fitness. There are some days you may feel as if you hear your child say “mom I need help” at least 100 times. Even though you might forget to take yourself it is important to make it a priority because when you do you will be a better role model and mother for your children. So on September 25th try to do at least one or more of these five activities listed below to celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day: 1. Schedule a Physical Exam: As an adult, you may think a physical exam is unnecessary if you are healthy. A physical ensures you have your immunizations up to date. Your doctor 50 fitness first
can also screen for cancer, (skin, breast, ovarian, cervical, etc.) heart conditions, diabetes, cholesterol levels, and other chronic diseases. You can discuss with your physician mental health issues such as stress or depression and if necessary you can be referred to specialists. 2. Exercise: According to Women’s Day Magazine, exercise has ten benefits for women other than weight loss. Many of these benefits are related to your health such as reducing your risk for cancer or minimizing stress, depression, and anxiety. If you exercise with a friend it can also be a great way to socialize or meet new people. As an added bonus s many fitness centers such as the YMCA provide free child care while you work out. 3. Eat Healthy: An article in Healthline states, some of the rewards you can experience by eating healthy foods are improved mood, avoiding weight gain, preventing diseases and illness, increasing your energy levels and helping you to live longer. It can be difficult to eat healthy foods when you are onthe-go or focusing on caring for your children, but when you consider all of the above benefits it is worth making the effort. It is important to note women have different dietary needs than men. In general women have more fat and less muscle than men which means women require fewer calories. During reproduction years women need more folic acid to decrease the risk of birth defects. Women are more likely to get osteoporosis (80% of people diagnosed with this disease are women), a disease that causes weak suburban family | subfam.com
bones. One way to increase the strength of your bones is to eat food with calcium. 4. Relax: It is hard for many moms to find a moment to relax, but doing so can help relieve stress. Relaxing can be as simple as deep breathing for 5 minutes. Some other ways to unwind are to listen to music, read, meditation, yoga, take a bath and writing in a journal. Another benefit of relaxing is it can improve your sleep at night and help with insomnia. 5. Sleep: Most moms forgo sleep in an effort to accomplish all of the different tasks of the day which results in going to bed late or waking up early. A poll in 2005 by the National Sleep Foundation found that women are more likely than men to have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Not receiving enough sleep can result in increased accidents, weight gain, difficulty concentrating, and getting sick. The Mayo Clinic recommends that adults should receive between 7-8 hours of sleep per night. When you get the proper amount of sleep your body produces proteins called cytokines which fight infections resulting in a stronger immune system. Sleep also helps you to maintain mental and physical energy along with improving your memory. Create Healthy Habits If you try at least one of these activities, you might find it is easier to do than you thought. If you make an effort to incorporate it into your life you will create healthy habits which will benefit you and your family. September/October 2019
