Summer may be seen as the outdoor season, but autumn also offers lots of opportunities for outdoor fun. Try some of these family activities, and fill yours and your kids’ senses with delight.

Enjoy a color tour. National parks and for ests are the places to be in the fall. Contact your nearest National Park, and find out when fall colors will be at their peak and recom mended routes for picturesque views.

Host a campfire cookout. If outdoor fires are permitted in your area, have the kids round up neighborhood friends for a cookout. Hot dogs, hot chocolate, marshmallows, and s’mores are a traditional way to top off the season. Have every one take turns telling stories around the fire. If you have little ones, check-out library books with autumn themes to read to the youngsters.

Attend a football game. Gather your blan kets and head to the stadium. High school, col lege, and pro football games are great fun for kids and parents alike. Take along a bag of pop corn and thermos of hot cocoa, then snuggle up and get ready to cheer on your team.

Visit an apple orchard. Take your kids ap ple picking, and top off the day with cider and doughnuts, a hayride, and end-of-the-year picnic.

Make a scarecrow. What’s fall without a scarecrow on your porch? It is easy to make. Just buy a couple of bails of straw, then have each family member gather some old clothes and hats. Stuff it using string to tie off the hands, feet, and head.

Walk in the woods. As flies and mosqui toes retreat, it’s the perfect time of year for a

walk in the woods. Look for animals scurry ing about gathering for the long, cold months ahead, and don’t forget your binoculars. Con tact state and local parks for wooded trails near you.

Leaf fun. Do you remember diving into the crisp fall leaves when you were a kid? Grab some rakes, and have your youngsters pitch in. Pile up the leaves to jump in, build a fort, and even have a leaf fight.

Find a festival. Apple, pumpkin, fall harvest, and many more festivals are found this time of year featuring food, arts and crafts, kids’ games, pony and wagon rides, and more. Visit your local event’s website online to see what’s coming up.

Bird migration watch As fall fills the air, many birds begin to head south. Contact State and National parks or your Department of Natural Resources for recommended birding locations as well as bird festivals.

Shift through a cornfield maze. Kids delight in finding their way through cornfield mazes. To find a maze near you, visit www. cornmazesamerica.com/ Also, watch the en tertainment section of your newspaper.

Plant perennials and bulbs . Let your kids try out their green thumbs. After all, fall is the time of year to plant perennials and flower bulbs. Let your kids choose some plants from the gardening store, and allow them to help design the garden. A handpainted rock or two adds color until the

stand in your front yard. Find an orchard where pumpkins are cheap, then have your kids purchase a small stock to sell for a high er price. Hot cocoa, baked pumpkin seeds, or doughnuts are profitable additions.

Make a bird feeder or house . Kids will enjoy the carpentry experience and marvel at watching birds make use of the kids’ cre ations. Park Forest Art Fair

One of Chicagoland’s treasures, the Park Forest Art Fair, will be held September 17 and 18 from 10 until 5, on the Village Green and along Main Street. The fair features artists exhibiting in a variety of media from painting, printmaking and photography to sculpture, woodworking, glass, fabric art and jewelry. The fair is family friendly and features a “kids’ art alley” offering several crafts projects, drawing and a face painter. We dare you to attempt the Curse of the Bayou. This haunted attraction has been hidden in the canyons below the Hayride of Horror. The veil between the living and the dead has been lifted, and a powerful Voodoo Priestess has been called forth from her home in the swamps. She commands a legion of fiendish monsters to assist her so that she may stay in this realm, wreaking havoc. Do you carry the still beating heart she yearns for? You must navigate the treacherous maze to escape, or risk being her next victim.

Regardless of the lie, you're still making a putting stroke, so use whatever grip you would use if you were on the green. Next, stand a little taller at address. This allows your arms to swing more freely and get an extra bit of momentum into the golf ball. It is also important to not hit down on the ball. Instead, set up with your hands even with or slightly behind the golf ball to add a touch of loft. This will help the ball avoid getting caught in the turf. Finally, as with all putts, make sure your backswing and follow through lengths match. For a longer putt, take the putter back a little further, but make sure your follow through travels the same distance. Keep these things in mind to help yourself nestle more putts up close from off the green!

Hitting Into the Wind

Like many aspects of golf, there are multiple ways to approach hitting shots into the wind. One is to flight the ball on a pierc ing trajectory that cuts through the breeze nicely. Another, perhaps easier method to hitting solid wind-beaters, is pulling a longer club and swinging easy.

Because, when many golfers are faced with shots into the wind, their first instinct is often to hit the same club as they normally would and swing as hard as possible. However, that can add unwanted spin to the ball and more directional variability, meaning it immediately balloons up in the air and lands short and likely offline.

So, by taking one or two more clubs (a 5 or 6 iron, instead of a 7), moving the ball slightly farther back in your stance at address (the width of a ball or two) and main taining a smooth swing instead of going all out, both spin and launch will remain low and the shot will be less affected by the wind.

The simple point? Instead of swinging for the fences when it’s windy out, force yourself to pull a longer club and swing less than full to keep the ball below the breeze!

Servings: 24

1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

5 ounces Brie cheese

1/2 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter

1/4 cup pecans, chopped

Heat oven to 400 F.

Grease mini muffin pan.

Press seams of puff pastry sheet to gether. Cut sheet into quarters then each quarter into six pieces.

Use rolling pin to flatten each piece of pastry into square shape. Place one square into each muffin cup.

Put 1/2 teaspoon brie, 1 teaspoon ap ple butter and 1/2 teaspoon chopped pecans into each muffin cup.

Bake 13-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

Expert Medical Advice about GOING BACK TO SCHOOL

My 12-year-old daughter asked me this ques tion when we recently discussed going back to school. This question along with many oth ers are being asked by kids since the rules about the pandemic are always changing

I want to make sure my daughter is healthy and ready for school, so I turned to a medi cal expert to learn more about masks, immu nizations, and check-ups before returning to school this fall.

SCHEDULE A CHECK-UP OR WELL VISIT

If your child has not already had their yearly check-up it is important to schedule one so that they can remain healthy throughout the school year. During this visit, you and your child can also discuss any mental health concerns.

Dr. Damon Korb, a developmental-behavior al pediatrician in Los Gatos, CA, and author of Raising an Organized Child says “Think

of going back to school, the same way that you would have any year but perhaps it is more important. We do not want to miss a potential problem to avoid another. Children should get all of their normal well visits and immunizations.”

IMMUNIZATIONS AND FLU SHOTS

Dr. Korb recommends referring to the immunization schedule recommended by the CDC to make sure your child is up to date. Sumana Reddy M.D. at Acacia Family Medi cal Group in Salinas, CA says that everyone should make sure that they get a yearly flu shot. Flu shots are normally available start ing in September. And it’s also important to get a covid vaccine if your child hasn’t re ceived one yet.

“Children can die from the flu. It’s very im portant to get your flu shot,” says Dr. Reddy. Dr. Korb agrees by saying, “Getting the flu shot may actually reduce the likelihood of catching and spreading covid.”

Dr. Reddy explains that most doctors are concerned about people being infected with

the combination of covid and the flu virus that will be circulating this fall. “The more families that get the flu vaccine the better it will be for everyone,” she says. Unlike most vaccines, you need to get the flu shot yearly for it to be effective since the strain of flu often changes.

If you don’t have insurance vaccines will be provided for free by doctors due to the fed erally funded program Vaccines For Children. The program provides vaccines to children who might not be vaccinated because of an inability to pay. The vaccines are available at private physicians’ offices and public health clinics registered as VFC providers.

And if you do have insurance there should not be a co-pay for receiving the vaccine.

“The Affordable Care Act requires private in surance companies to pay in full for vaccines recommended by the CDC,” says Dr. Reddy.

Dr. Reddy explains that there might be some insurance companies that are exempt and that you should check with your insurance compa ny about coverage before getting your vaccine.

Children might be unaware of the fact their vision is not normal. This may lead to feeling frustrated about being unable to see the words in a book or in the classroom causing a child to act out.

The CDC recommends that children’s eyes should be checked regularly by an eye doctor or pediatrician. Amblyopia or lazy eye is the most common cause of vision loss in children which can be treated if caught early between the ages of 3 to 5 years old.

The American Optometric Association es timates 80% of a child’s learning happens through observation. In the classroom, most of the teaching is done by displaying the in formation.

ORAL HEALTH

The American Academy of Pediatrics recom mends that your child visit a dentist for an initial check-up by the time they turn one. Ac cording to the CDC tooth decay (cavities) is one of the most common chronic diseases for kids from ages 6 to 19. Research studies found that children who have poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than children who have good oral health.

Fluoride can prevent about one-third of cavities in baby teeth. If your town wa ter does not contain fluoride, you can ask your pediatrician or dentist to prescribe fluoride which is typically taken in pill form once a day.

TELEHEALTH CHECK-IN

Kids that are going back to school might have anxiety about this transition from summer break.

“I recommend that all kids do a telehealth check-in with their pediatrician to discuss the transition. Often parents think their kid is fine, but you want to have a chance to talk about stress and anxiety,” says Dr. Reddy.

During this check-in, you can also make sure that your vaccines are up to date or talk about any other mental health concerns.

BE A ROLE MODEL

Dr. Korb says, “Make sure you prepare your child by teaching and modeling safe behavior such as frequently washing hands.”

Orange Oatmeal

Servings: 4

1½ cups water

1 cup Florida Orange Juice

1 cup quick cooking steel-cut oats

1 Florida Orange, peeled and diced

1 tablespoon agave nectar or honey

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

In medium saucepan over high heat, bring water and orange juice to boil.

Add oats to boiling liquids.

AN HONEST LETTER FROM THE TEACHER

Dear Parents,

These words don’t come easily. I find myself in a position where I am left with no other choice, but to bear my heart on my sleeve and ask a favor.

I want to provide this for them in school. I miss the days of a dress-up trunk and play kitchen. I miss the block corner and a craft table. Your children need these things, and I can no longer provide them.

Could you please give your child time to play?

See, the day is busy, as you know. We are in a new era of education. Opinions on that aside, I want you to know I recognize the change. The academic rigor is good but also pushes other things out of the picture.

Your child is learning higher-level mathematical concepts at a much earlier age. Algebra is introduced in first grade now. But there is a cost, and exploring geometry through Legos and wooden blocks just doesn’t fit in.

The writing your child is doing is amazing. There are insights and opinions and text-based evidence, but I had to let something go to make room for this. Unfortunately, we don’t really have time for the creative writing we used to see so much of. It’s not gone, but it feels that way sometimes.

Complex texts and more non-fiction are filling our day. This provides amazing connections between social studies and science. But the loss is things you may remember about grade school. We don’t learn the 50 states and capitals anymore, and the solar system study is no longer about making models of the planets.

The technology is amazing. Computers are putting more information at their fingertips than we could have found in any encyclopedia. But it does mean more time in front of screens and that typing trumps cursive. I know that’s hard to swallow, but it’s just the best use of our time.

Art and music and physical education are still there for most of us, but not in the classroom. It’s one session a week as a ‘special’, but I just don’t have the time or resources to pull the paints out in the classroom anymore. I’m not sure how I could justify it with everything else that must be taught.

Thankfully, reading is still an essential part of our day. We read books and articles and primary sources. It’s wonderful to open up new worlds of information. But it had to take the place of something and reading for fun seemed to be the thing that fell away. It breaks my heart, but this is why I need you.

I need you to bridge this gap with me. When your children come home please fill these voids in what I am able to do in six hours a day.

Let them be messy with glitter and paint. I know it’s hard, but they need time to be creative.

Let them be loud and run and get dirty outside. I know there is not a lot of time, but their bodies need the freedom to move.

Let them read a book just because it’s beautiful. I know you’re busy with dinner and homework, but the beauty of words can inspire them to dream.

Let them try new things. Go places. Visit the library just because. Play tag. Build a tower. Let their imagination run free.

Kids need this. Play will only help them become better learners, thinkers, and creators. No matter how old or young they may be please make time for them to play.

I will do my best for them in the classroom. I will provide academic rigor and teach all that I’m supposed to. On top of that, I’ll try to squeeze in opportunities for all that’s been pushed aside.

I’ll do what I can, but I need your help.

Please, give them time to play.

FALL Fitness

Running in autumn is beautiful. The tempera tures drop in the fall, making it an ideal time to run outside. The humidity and heat won’t cause your body extra stress. You won’t get dehydrated so quickly. All in all, your running performance might noticeably improve thanks to better weather conditions. Maintaining your goal pace may suddenly become a little easier, too, as you try to hit your next goal.

If you’re now running in the early morn ing hours, before getting the kids on the bus, decrease your mileage for a few week to get acquainted with the time change. If you have the opportunity to run midday, search out new paths with fall foliage.

Temperature changes can happen quickly during the fall season. Layer your clothing and plan to take off layers off as you warm up. You want to wear enough to keep you warm, but not enough to overheat. If you are running in the morning or at night, you need to consider visibility. Visibility is essential to runner’s safety, as it helps you be seen by cars and bikes. In addition to gear such as lights, reflective gear and bright colors are great ways to increase your visibility.

Avoid slipping on wet leaves with the moisture on the ground. Check the treads on your running shoes to ensure that you’ve got a stable grip.

With the heavy fall sports season under way in school systems across the nation – one of America’s leading advocacy groups for sports injury prevention is urging athletic departments and parents alike to reevaluate their school’s safety protocols and, if necessary, shore up their game-time contingency plans.

Nearly 30 million children and adolescents participate in youth sports in the United States. If you’re a parent, do you know your school’s procedures in case your child gets hurt during a practice or a game? It’s not enough to just assume the coach has all the protocols nailed down. With sports in sec ondary schools getting more competitive and aggressive, the level of preparedness for inju ries also should be heightened.”

The Taylor Haugen Foundation cites these five tips for building the safest school sports program possible:

1. Post dedicated medical personnel on the sideline.

2. Establish proper sideline protocols for injuries.

3. Outfit your athlete with the proper protective equipment.

4. Beat the heat with a hydration plan.

5. Talk to your kids about sports safety.
