Welcome Autumn By Christina Katz

ometimes it seems like summer will never end. But finally that first cool, crisp autumn chill comes along and rekindles fond memories of the cozy, colorful days and nights to come.

If you are not quite ready for autumn yet, this alphabetical cornucopia of fall activities will rekindle your enthusiasm even if the dog days persist. So, bring it on, autumn! Give us the shortening days, the diminishing light, and, even, one day soon—although we are not quite ready yet—snow! Bake some Apple crisp together and fill your home with the scent of butter, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Cook up a Back-to-school family feast where you honor what each member of the family has ever learned in school.

Rekindle your team spirit! Put on your snazziest Flannel shirt and catch an afternoon football game. Or toss your own ball around in an impromptu pick-up game.

There is a Quiet hush in the air just before night falls. Get out and enjoy it before the first snowfall keeps you inside.

Visit a historic Graveyard and make crayon rubbings of tombstones on large sheets of packing paper. Over-sized crayons, unwrapped and rubbed sideways, work best.

Pass out the Rakes and then jump in the biggest pile of leaves you can gather.

Schedule your family a Hayride under the golden harvest moon. Contact local farms for availability.

Put aside some clothes you’d otherwise give to charity to stuff with straw and make a funny Scarecrow.

Take twenty minutes to pore over the infinite color varieties of Indian corn before you select the perfect cluster to hang on your door.

Start a new family ritual. Find something to be grateful for every day and share your Thankfulness at dinnertime.

Pull out all of the cold weather clothes and never, ever throw away any of the well-worn Jeans, which are so perfect for outdoor fall fun.

Let a Mary Poppins DVD bring to magical life the story of Bert, a Chimney sweep, and Mary Poppins, a nanny with an enviable umbrella, the way only this perennial classic can.

Tip up your chin and watch the Migrating geese. Read the poem of the same name by Mary Oliver aloud.

Lake Park Golf Course

1015 Howard Avenue, Des Plaines 847-391-5730 DPParks.org Rob Hutzler, PGA Certified Personal Coach GolfTEC-Des Plaines Properly Fit Clubs Are Just As Important For Junior Golfers Properly fit equipment is a critical component in the development of all junior golfers. The variety of clubs available today makes this process much easier than 20 or 30 years ago when juniors were given their parents old

clubs. Juniors playing with cut-down or clubs that are clearly too long for them will result in frustration, poor swing mechanics, and the start of bad habits. Clubs that are cut-down will be improperly balanced or much too heavy to swing properly. Grips that are too big will also make it difficult to swing properly and hit the ball at the target. A certified fitter will make sure they're using the proper clubs for their age and height. Junior clubs are available based on age and height. A set of junior clubs will only last at most a couple seasons before they grow into the next set. A junior set consists of 3-7 clubs, and is relatively inexpensive compared to an adult set. Some companies offer a trade-in value as the child outgrows their current clubs and need the next size up. Taking the step of seeing a PGA Professional or certified fitter will result in a happy and successful golfer.

ant kids to bring home As? Start with more ZZZs. According to sleep experts and numerous new studies, lost sleep hurts learning and hinders school-day success. That’s bad news, because today’s kids get about an hour less sleep each night than they did 30 years ago, says New York Times bestselling author Po Bronson in his book NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children. This lost sleep comes with a steep price tag—impaired learning and academic success.

How does sleep boost learning? Researchers believe it has to do with the way the brain processes information during sleep. In fact, Michigan State University researchers found that children can even learn while they’re asleep as the brain integrates new information and memories. Researchers from University of Florida discovered that newborns learn in their sleep, and new research from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine shows that sleep helps students perform better on tests. Read on for age-specific information on how sleep impacts learning—and how to help kids get a better nights’ rest.

EARLY SCHOOL YEARS 3-8

For sleep-deprived kids, school trouble starts early: 10 percent of kids in early education suffer from sleep disturbances that disrupt learning, according to a German study. The American Professional Sleep Society reports that sleep deprivation significantly worsens inattentiveness and hyperactivity in young children, leading to ADHD-like symptoms (known as “faux” ADHD). Even modest sleep deprivation is enough to hinder learning. According to a study pubsuburban family | subfam.com

lished in the journal SLEEP, a mere hour of lost slumber is enough to bring on inattentiveness and hyperactivity in young children. A 2011 study of 6 and 7 year olds shows that language skills, grammar, spelling, and reading comprehension suffer when kids get less than 9 hours of sleep per night. How to help: Sleep-deprived children may not appear sleepy, says Shelby F. Harris, Psy.D. , director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. In fact, they may act hyper and goofy. But preschoolers and school-age children don’t outgrow the need for a consistent bedtime and bedtime routine. Establish an age-appropriate bedtime that allows your child to rest for 10 to 11 hours each night.

TWEEN YEARS 9-13

During the late elementary and middleschool years, academics become more challenging and sports more competitive. But when increasingly busy schedules start cutting into sleep, kids retain less of what they learn, says Mark Splaingard, M.D., director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “Long hours spent on sports September/October 2016

practice or math problems are counterproductive, if these activities keep kids up late at night,” he notes. Kids will learn more and perform better—whether on the field or in the classroom—with sufficient shut-eye. How to help: Parents need to understand sleep’s importance and guard kids’ sleep hours zealously, says Splaingard. That means maintaining firm school-year bedtimes and choosing afterschool and evening activities that end at least an hour before kids need to wind down for bed.

TEENAGE YEARS 14-18

Teenagers are Splaingard’s most sleepdeprived patients, a fact that doesn’t surprise him. During high school, after-school jobs, extracurricular activities, sports, socializing, and homework simply don’t leave enough time for sleep. Most teens need more sleep than parents think—over 9 hours a night—and chronic sleep deprivation hurts learning at a time when kids need lots of mental energy for tough subjects from chemistry to calculus. But teens’ busy schedules deserve only part of the blame for teens’ sleep deficits: cell phones and laptops keep teens up late, often into the wee hours. When teens finally power off their

computers and go to bed, round-the-clock access to cell phones disrupts sleep. A new study reports that sleeping near cell phones puts teens at risk for so-called “sleep texting:” waking up and firing off text messages during the night without any recollection of having sent the texts the next morning. All this sleep disruption adds up to bleary mornings and bleak report cards. How to help: Protect teens’ precious sleep hours with a media curfew—shut down all electronics an hour before bed and establish a “charging station” outside the bedroom where teens leave their electronics overnight. This important step keeps bedrooms free of sleep-disrupting cell phones and computers, says Harris. “The bedroom should be a place for sleep,” she notes. “It’s not a spot for homework, watching TV, or surfing the Internet.” When it comes to learning, tutors, cuttingedge gadgets, and hours of homework can’t compensate for hours of lost sleep. When parents prioritize kids’ sleep needs, learning comes more naturally, says Splaingard. “We think we’re helping make kids more successful with more activities and more homework. But what they really need is more sleep.”

What is an Uncontested Divorce? An uncontested divorce is a viable and inexpensive option for spouses of all economic and family status. Offering you and your spouse the chance to end your marriage quietly and with dignity. An uncontested divorce means that the spouses are able to agree on the major issues involved in a divorce, such as child custody; child support; spousal support; division of property; and division of debt. Spouses in agreement must still go to court to obtain the court’s approval. However, an uncontested divorce usually moves quicker through the courts, is less expensive, and minimizes the amount of private information made public. While no divorce is without disagreements, an experienced divorce attorney can assist you in getting the best results. September/October 2016

family wellness

By Dr. Michael Foggs, MD

What causes it? The general thoughts: (1) children are exposed to more colds and viruses that set off asthma as they reenter school and (2) September brings increased ragweed and outdoor mold levels, both potent asthma triggers. What can a parent do? Frequent handwashing and keeping hands out of mouth and eyes will help ward off colds – as will healthy sleep and nutrition. Keep outdoor allergens out of your home and bedroom: Keep windows closed and air cleaners running during high allergen days; change clothes after playing outside; bathe/wash hair before bedtime. But the most important thing parents can do is focus on the asthma itself. 34 family wellness

• Be aware of asthma symptoms and make sure people caring for your child at school are aware as well.

their quick-relief asthma medication and carries it with them as soon as they are developmentally able.

• Coughing: Sometimes the only symptom of a flare; often worse at night or early morning; can be dry or mucus-filled

• Talk to your school and school nurse. Fill in and return all medical forms. Supply the school with medication and orders from your healthcare provider as needed.

• Wheezing: A whistling or squeaky sound, especially when breathing out; often easily heard but sometimes requires a stethoscope

arents have a lot to think about as the school year starts and they prepare their children for the new academic year. How will they relate to new teacher(s)? Are they in class with their friends? What challenges lie ahead? For parents of students with asthma, there are other concerns to face, including the annual “September Asthma Peak”: a time when asthma flares and hospitalizations historically increase.

• Inform the school on days your child seems to struggle with asthma so the school can support your student’s asthma management. How do you know if your student’s asthma is in good control? • Baylor University’s “Rules of Two®” offers an easy assessment. Does your student: • Have asthma symptoms or use their quickrelief inhaler more than Two times a week? • Awaken at night with asthma symptoms more than Two times a month?

• Chest tightness: Feeling like something is squeezing or sitting on your chest

• Refill their quick-relief inhaler more than Two times a year?

• Shortness of breath: Feeling like you can’t catch your breath or breathe deeply enough; like you are out of shape and constantly tired

A “yes” answer to any of these questions means asthma may not be under control and your child’s treatment plan may need revising. Consider seeing a board-certified allergist for a complete allergy and asthma checkup. Staying on top of asthma, avoiding triggers and treating symptoms as soon as they arise are keys to control. With these considerations, you and your student can be off to a great school year.

• Review and update your child’s Asthma Action Plan with your healthcare provider. Youth Sports Builds Character

N

ot everyone deserves a trophy. n fact, unearned rewards can be harmful, because artificially inflating a child’s self-esteem merely for participation in sport sends the wrong message, warns psychologist Jason Richardson.

“There are plenty of incarcerated felons with an inflated self-view and there are extremely successful people grappling with a more moderate self-concept, so self-esteem alone is not the measure by which we should prepare our children for greatness,” says Richardson, a Pan-Am Games gold medalist who is also known as “Dr. JRich” among colleagues. Richardson isn’t alone. Last year, Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison returned two participation trophies given to

his two sons, awarded not for a specific victory that they’d earned, but simply for being student-athletes. ] Anyone can give and get a trophy, but the true value of youth sports is in the occasional tough lessons – and successes – children experience through hard work and merit, says Richardson, author of “It’s All BS! We’re All Wrong, And You’re All Right!” (www.drjasonrichardson.com) offers practical tips parents can share with their kids. • Stop saying “the problem is …” Fill in the blank. Too many people say the problem is with the coach, the school, the other kids, the equipment, the schedule – and so on. This kind of thinking implies failure because it immediately rules out your child’s goals. Instead, say things that rule in positive outcomes, such as, “I/We/You can do this!” • Make failure a teachable moment. Sports can test a kid’s emotional fragility. They may want to give up with failure, but that’s a terrible lesson. If your child missed a free throw that would’ve won the team the game, encourage free-throw practice the next day. Better yet, ask them what they are going to do differently next time! Use

a coach’s staple: remind your child that Michael Jordan was cut by his high school basketball team during his sophomore year. Parents can always reward persistence and effort. • Don’t let your child’s ego run wild. The flipside of low self-esteem due to failure can be cockiness with success. Children have far less experience keeping the ego in check, so if he/ she is the best athlete in school, they may become arrogant. Try to catch this early; people evolve at different rates. Temper their ego by showing examples of humility, respect and gratitude. Use examples of great athletes who have overcome slumps or adversity. • Show them how to be a better student. N

o matter the season, it’s important to ensure kids get up and moving so they stay on track with their physical fitness! Here are some tips with many that offer the opportunity for some good oldfashioned family time. Exercising need not be reserved for the outdoors as there is plenty kids can do inside of the house to get fit! Here are just a few good ideas: • Walk or run up and down a stairwell multiple times (skip a step for added intensity and effectiveness). • Jump rope - yes, indoors too! Just ensure that the child has enough clearance from that cherished vase! • Dance! Let the kids "boogie" away those calories. • Calisthenics (push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, etc.) are great exercise and you can

40 fitness first

hold a friendly competition! • Hula hoop where, again, clearance is key here! • Crunches! Sure, let the kids watch TV but challenge them to do as many sit ups as they can while the commercials are on. Do this for at least one full TV program, which usually has at least 3 or 4 commercial breaks. • Shadow boxing is a great way to work the arm, leg and core muscles while also getting the heart pumping for some nice calorieburning cardio. And, it’s fun. Kids will have fun showing you how they can “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.” • Yoga (yes, for kids, too!) is great for developing body coordination and balance. • Stretching helps with flexibility, which is another sign of a healthy body. Prefer the great outdoors? No problem! Outdoor fitness ideas abound, including: • Take a walk, jog, or hike. Raining? Walk the mall double time! • Ride a bike, skateboard, or scooter. • Roller skate or in-line skate.

suburban family | subfam.com

• Catch a pickup game for basketball, baseball, football, tennis and others that get your heart pumping and muscles working. • Swim! Forget doggie paddles; instead, do laps up and down the pool or, for the ambitious types, try butterflies! • Jumping rope is an old standby that offers an array of health benefits. • Take casual activity to the next level and add excitement. Seek out community events, such as a walk-a-thon, bike-a-thon, or even a triathlon that accepts minors. However, competition should not be the focus. Instead, the focus should be on doing one’s best. These events are often in support of a good cause, so children can also learn the value of fundraising and giving to those that are in need. Let children pick a cause that is important to them and make sure the activity matches their physical abilities. You will find plenty to choose from on the ‘Fitness Events’ section in Suburban Family Magazine. • Take advantage of local activity courses. Many area parks are set up with physical activity courses that span across fields and trails with exercises stations interspersed throughout. Consider having your child visit these courses during a Saturday morning event with each session having a different theme or pace. Children can set goals, such as trying to beat their time from last week, spotting animals along the route, or finding “treasure” along the way. • Take some lessons. Find an after school program,YMCA, or community center that offers lessons or activities that are physical fitnessoriented. Your options are unlimited and may include tennis, dance, kick boxing, golf, swimming and self-defense. These lessons will help your child become more well-rounded in many areas of fitness and may possibly help them find one that they enjoy. • Enjoy an “extreme” family vacation. Get your children involved in planning a dynamic family vacation that includes physical activities for everyone, both together as a family and individually. Each family member should be able to plan a physical activity whether it is taking a walking tour of a city, playing volleyball, kayaking, white water rafting, snorkeling, skiing or snow boarding, hiking a trail or climbing a summit.
