Lemont senior’s portrait of beloved teacher turning heads at high school

LEMONT — Rachel Kasperski never had a chance to meet longtime Lemont High School math instructor and coach Marv Gonsiorowski — he retired in 2006 before she enrolled at Lemont High School and died this past summer of complications from cancer.

Still, Kasperski managed to put her teachers and other staff at Lemont High School in awe with her portrait of Gonsiorowski, depicting him with a smile on his face on a wall in the high school’s math department.

“This is a memory for the high school,” Kasperski said of her portrait.

Gonsiorowski was hired in 1970 and served as an instructor for 36 years. He also served as the high school’s varsity football coach for 11 years and led the school to its first-ever IHSA playoff appearance in 1980.

“Marv Gonsiorowski will be missed by the Lemont community for many years to come,” Tony Hamilton said, showing signs of the beloved teacher’s legacy at the high school.

Kasperski drew the portrait as part of the “Blueprint LHS” project art teacher Ryan Hennebry introduced.

“I do a lot of portraits of my family and I think (Hennebry) had seen some of them and he thought I could go Gonsiorowski,” Kasperski said. “He mentioned to me a

couple times that he was a really goofy guy and I just kind of played into that.”

Drawing portraits comes naturally to her. She said she was born to do it.

At about 7 years old, Kasperski said her older brother was “decent” at drawing and would always draw his action figures. She decided to challenger her brother’s drawing skills and began working on her own Teddy Bear drawings.

“My brother, sister and I kind of have this internal competition between us with everything,” Kasperski said. “From then on I just would take anything I had and just draw it.”

These days, she dabbles in drawing and oil paintings daily and is looking forward to getting into art school next year. Her goal is to attend The Art Institute of Chicago next fall.

“I want to do something with art; maybe be an art teacher,” Kasperski said. “I have thought about being an artist and if I am successful at that, that’s great but it’s not the easiest thing to work out.”

St. Matthew Lutheran Church building earns historic status

LEMONT — The latest building to be deemed a historic landmark in Lemont is also in search of a new owner.

The Lemont Historic Preservation Commission recently named the St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church building at 301 Lemont St. a local historic landmark. The church building has been up for sale for nearly two years but officials are predicting the landmark designation won’t have an impact on the sale — it may even help.

St. Matthew Lutheran Church representative Kathy Henrikson said the sale of the building will not be impacted because a stipulation of a potential sale had already included prevention of demolition.

“Even without the designation the Village of Lemont has restrictions in place to protect these structures,” she said.

“They would not allow the demolition of any limestone structure and we have been marketing that way.

“It’s an honor to be a part of Lemont’s official Historic Landmark group,” Henrikson added. “These buildings were hand-constructed by our forefathers. I can’t even imagine the hard work and sweat that went into building St. Matthew Church.”

Historic Preservation Commission President Barb Buschman said she believes the designation may even help move along the sale process.

“Depending on the type of person, they may be happy about it,” Buschman said of prospective buyers. “I don’t think it will hinder the church in the sale. I think it might help the sale.”

St. Matthew Lutheran Church is hoping to relocate to land on 127th Street, where church officials hope to build a new church after the current property is sold. The land on 127th

Street was purchased in the 1990s and has been paid off, according to a previous interview with church officials.

The church is looking to sell the existing building for $1.49 million and the property is for sale as a commercial property.

It can be developed commercially or it could stay as a place of worship, officials said.

For possible buyers looking to make the building into something other than a place of worship, Buschman said there aren’t as many hoops to jump through as one may think comes being on the local landmark list.

Building owners are not burdened with additional historic preservation or property maintenance requirements, Buschman said. The owner also has liberty in the interior and is not required to go before the commission if changes are desired.

However, the owner must come before the preservation commission to discuss alterations made to the exterior and gain approval before beginning any work on the building.

“We aren’t looking to tell you what to do, but to preserve what we have,” Buschman said.

The St. Matthew Lutheran Church building was selected to be part of the town’s local, historic landmark registry because of its links to the past.

Buschman said the building was chosen because of its Lemont-Joliet limestone known as “Athens marble,” among other reasons.

St. Matthew is the first church building to be named a local, historic landmark. The building is one of 11 local landmarks now in the area.

“It’s a local landmark, which is just an honor that we give to buildings that played an important role in our history making,” Buschman said. “It gives attention to buildings that were instrumental and are instrumental in our heritage.”

District 113A Board to finalize strategic plan next month

LEMONT — District 113A administrators continue to work on narrowing the focus of five main goals for the district’s first-ever strategic plan, and the plan is expected to be finalized next month.

The board of education was told Tuesday night that a final strategic plan will be ready for approval in January.

“I really want the focus to be on this document in January,” board president Dave Molitor said Tuesday.

While a date has yet to be determined, the board is looking to hold the meeting in the first two weeks of January. At the meeting, board members will finally have an opportunity to provide their input and determine which goals should be a top priority moving forward. For the past month, the district has been receiving information from a community survey, focus groups and forums to use in completing the plan.

A strategic plan is a document that lays out the vision, mission and a plan of action for district achievements over the next five

years. The plan will outline the district’s goals and objectives, which were determined through the forums, focus groups and survey, and a plan on how to achieve them.

Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said from the groups and surveys, the district has been able to pinpoint the strengths and challenges facing the district in building the future.

Steven Humphrey, a Lemont resident and vice president for business development at the consulting firm ECRA Group, has been assisting the district with compiling information and creating the strategic plan free of charge.

“The plan will provide a focus for the district and help you make your decisions based on the plan,” Humphrey said Tuesday. “The plan gives clarity for you.”

District administrators and Humphrey are continuing to work to narrow the focus of five main goals and the mission statement.

Birkenmaier said the proposed mission statement is more of a focus on the district’s purpose and what the children should take away from education to be successful in life.

“We wanted to make sure it allowed for student choice; different children have different strengths,” Birkenmaier said. “We focused on the what it is (we do) versus the how and who.”

Along with the mission statement, the administration drafted five main goals or categories: Leadership and Organization, Student Focus, Curriculum, Instruction and Classroom Technology, Communication and Partnerships and Operations.

Birkenmaier said the completed plan, including the administration’s outline on how staff will implement the board’s approved goals, is expected to be complete

by March 1.

Implementation of the strategic plan will begin next school year.

Shake-up on District 113A Board looks imminent LEMONT — There will be a few new faces on the District 113A Board of Education come April.

On Monday, four newcomers filed petitions for the three board seats up for election: Brian Bushnell, Susan Petrarca, David Deitemyer and Michael Clausen.

Meanwhile, two of the three incumbents — Lisa Wright and Karen Siston — have announced they won’t run for reelection. The third, Kevin Doherty, had yet to file his petitions for re-election as of Thursday. Doherty did not return phone calls before press time.

Wright said she’s opted to retire from the board after eight years to take some time off and focus on career goals. Siston said she wants to spend more time with family.

Petitions will be accepted in the district office, 16100 127th St., from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Elections will be held April 9.

NEWS BRIEFS District 210 incumbents first to submit nominating petitions

LEMONT — Lemont High School Board of Education’s three incumbent members were the first to submit nominating petitions for the April election.

Current board members Mike Kardas, George Rimbo and Mike Shackel turned in their petitions Monday. Monday was the first day of petition collection.

Petitions will be accepted from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the superintendent’s office, 800 Porter St.

District 113A approves 2012 levy of $19 million

LEMONT — The District 113A Board of Education will levy $19 million for calendar year 2012, a decrease over last year’s levy of $21.9 million.

Business Manager Barbara Germany said the district will be levying more money in the transportation fund this year than previous years to cover repayments to the Illinois State Board of Education. The District 113A Board of Education unanimously approved the 2012 levy during Tuesday night’s meeting.

District 113A owes ISBE $589,661 for unallowable reimbursement claims made

in fiscal years 2009-10 and 2010-11. For the next three years, ISBE will be deducting a portion of the money owed by the district though reimbursement claims.

Germany said an interfund loan may be needed in January in the Transportation Fund to cover usual expenditures and repayments to ISBE. The levy is the major resource of revenue for the school district, according to board documents.

Jimbo’s Pizza expands to offer dine-in option LEMONT — Jimbo’s Pizza has spent the past 14 years at the corner of Walker and McCarthy roads as a carry-out or delivery pizzeria but moving just a couple doors down in the same strip mall gave them an opportunity to provide dine-in services.

Owner Jim Mandra said he moved into a larger space at 12257 Walker Road to provide affordable dining to residents.

“There is seating and affordable dining,” Mandra said. “You can take the family out and there is no wait staff, no tipping. You order and we run it out to you.”

Jimbo’s Pizza menu is famous for “The Lemontster”, which Mandra describes as “19 inches of pizza delight with any toppings you want.”

Mandra also serves up appetizers, sides,

sandwiches and pasta. He added there will be more pastas to choose from in the near future but everything else is staying the same.

Jimbo’s Pizza offers soda, with free refills, but currently does not have a liquor license, which is something Mandra may add in time.

The new space can seat about 30 people and Mandra said is a very comfortable atmosphere.

The cost for a family to come out to dinner is about $25 to $30.

“We have the best, friendliest service possible,” Mandra said. “We treat our customers the way we would want to be treated.”

Fire protection district offers free smoke detectors LEMONT — The Lemont Fire Protection District continues to offer free smoke detectors to residents.

The district received 800 smoke detectors through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant.

In the last few months, District 113A has begun a strategic planning process to chart our course for the next five- year period. The goal of strategic planning is to bring a focus to the work of the school board and district leadership team and to assist in the decision making as we build our future programs.

Many residents contributed their time and talents through volunteer community engagement work, and focus group, community forum and community survey participation.

We know you have many demands on your time and appreciate your thoughtfulness in supporting the district’s work. Again, our school community has risen to the Susan occasion by offering their Birkenmaier talents, time and thoughts about the things that shape a rewarding educational experience for our children.

A special thank you to Steve Humphrey, Lemont resident and former school superintendent, for facilitating this process at no cost to the district taxpayers. He spent untold hours meeting with residents and staff to gather thoughts about the district.

The result of these collective efforts will be a written strategic plan that is built with a sense of SD-113A history, focusing on the needs of students and staff, with the intention of increasing performance and the success of students.

Throughout the focus group and community forum process, many outstanding and innovative suggestions were made on “what” changes would benefit the district and services, as well as improve District 113A as an organization. The board and administration will consider the suggestions as the process evolves over the next few months. Once the plan is developed, those accountable for the implementation will narrow the targets and approaches to best serve the strategic plan and overall goal of improving student performance and success.

As with any plan development, we will need to make financially sustainable choices. We enter into the next phase of planning with an awareness of limited local revenues and the potential for decreased state and federal funding. Many factors beyond our control such as legislatively mandated public pension cost shifting can quickly and negatively influence our future planning.

With our sights set to 2013 and beyond, we bring our resolve to serve this community by providing a high-quality educational system. We will continue to partner with our community, Lemont High School and other area schools to meet the educational needs of all our children.

NEWS BRIEFS Ace Hardware in Lemont now open

LEMONT — Ace Hardware is now open in Lemont’s State Street strip mall and hundreds have shown up this week to support the new business.

Owner Dan Harris said they officially opened their doors on Monday and the opening went well. He and his wife, Pattie, were surprised by the amount of people that came out to check out the new Ace Hardware.

“They really appreciated a new store and a new hardware store in town,” Harris said. “It was outstanding. I was shocked by the number of people coming in and overall it was a good experience.”

On Monday, Harris said about 200 transactions were completed in Ace, 1096 State St. “We just want to say thank you to the customers,” Harris said.

Harris said they had been looking to move in an Ace Hardware to this Lemont strip mall for years.

“Our real interest is in the Village of Lemont and doing business in Lemont,” Harris said in a previous interview. “The space would accommodate what we need and it is in the center of town where a good amount of traffic goes by and we have street exposure.”

ew to Lombard is the upscale sports bar and restaurant Trademark Tavern, whose touches include a pale ale specially crafted for the pub by Two Brothers Brewing Company. Adding panache to the tavern’s concept is co-owner Mandy (Lane) Lewandowski, a twotime veteran of TV’s “Fear Factor,” and a former Miss Illinois USA. She and her husband, Matt, are partners in the venture with George Cibula.

“We’re trying to provide a really welcoming atmosphere that caters to area professionals looking for a unique spot to enjoy a business lunch — and after work, sports fans seeking a really good venue for viewing favorite events,” she says.

Included in the eatery are four tapper tables, each sporting a pair of different craft beers, where customers pour their own drafts. In addition, the bar has dozens of specialty beers on tap.

“It’s a different type of experience,” Mandy Lewandowski says, noting the tavern features an array of fine whiskeys and Scotch in addition to signature cocktails, wines and more than 60 beers. “We bring a downtown feel to the suburbs.”

She calls the menu inventive and affordable, with dishes prepared from scratch in the kitchen — from the popular reuben rolls to beer batter made with Fat Tire beer for the cheese curds.

“I like the environment, and great service. Can’t wait to come back.”

Entertainment is offered most Fridays, and during Bears games, chicken wings are free with a beverage purchase.

To create Trademark Tavern, the interior of the one-time Magnum’s steakhouse was completely redone.

Pillowcases brighten kids’ hospital stay This week’s volunteer opportunity: Case for Caring

Thanks to suburban family ties, the Californiabased Calliope Foundation charity recently launched a project to help cheer up children who are being treated for cancer at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

The foundation’s Case for Caring is collecting pillowcases with light-hearted, fun designs. They can be dropped off at Wool and Company, a knitting and crochet shop in St. Charles. “I know so many of you love to sew, so there is a great way you can join Bonnie Kellogg of Fix-a-Stitch; she has wanted to do something for pediatric oncology patients,� Wool and Company owner Lesley Edmondson writes on her website.

She says the drive will continue on an ongoing basis, and invites everyone to sew pillowcases for the project or donate purchased ones.

Kellogg, a member of Calliope Foundation’s volunteer board of directors, was inspired to create the project by her niece, a registered nurse working in pediatric oncology at Central DuPage Hospital.

This month, Edmondson is also collecting handmade scarves for the Heartstrings Scarves project, which will deliver them to girls in treatment facilities

Glen Ellyn graphic designer helps

deck the halls of the White House L

ike many locals, Cindy Kiple spent time this season arranging bows and ornaments around the house for Christmas.

But this year, it wasn’t her house that she spent time decorating.

The 28-year Glen Ellyn resident who works as art director at Westmont’s InterVarsity Press was selected as a volunteer to help decorate the White House for the holidays.

Late last month, Kiple traveled to Washington, D.C. to work with fellow volunteers to spruce up the president’s residence for the season. Recently, she talked about what it was like to help decorate one of the most famous residences in the nation.

How did you get involved with decorating the White House?

I got involved as a volunteer by applying through the White House website (www.whitehouse.com,) and was selected. My sister was also selected, as well as two friends of mine. My sister, Shari Koenes, is an interior designers. I am a graphic designer.

What happened during the trip?

We flew to Washington on Thanksgiving day. The work began the next day with all the volunteers working in a warehouse wiring and rewiring ornaments, making different decorations and packing everything up according to the rooms they would be used in. We worked in teams, assigned to different rooms in the house. My team was assigned to the West Wing, so we worked on the West Wing entrance, the West Wing lobby, the vice president’s office, the Cabinet room, the Roosevelt room, the first lady’s office and the Oval Office. Unfortunately, photos are not allowed in the West Wing and we were closely watched by security at all times.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

After working the first day in the warehouse, the next day we started work at the White House. We worked for four days decorating all the rooms we were assigned to. At times, we helped some of the teams in the public rooms as well. It was amazing to see all the activity with all the teams working in the different rooms and watching the designs take shape.

Is there a favorite story you'd like to share from the trip?

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, there was a reception in the White House for all the volunteers. It was so exciting to see all the decorations in place and the house looking beautiful for Christmas. The first lady was there to thank us all. It was a special and magical evening.

It’s hard to choose a favorite part. It was all so amazing. I think working in the Oval Office was so

awesome just because of where we were. In fact, we were sitting on the floor of the Oval Office, making bows and preparing ornaments and we would suddenly say "Oh my gosh! I'm sitting on the floor in the office of the president of the United States!" It was surreal.

The first family’s dog, Bo, was wandering around the house, which was fun to see. He seemed unimpressed with all of us. He let us pet him, but then he moved on.

Were you able to meet the president?

We didn't see President Obama while we were there.

But it was a thrill to see Mrs. Obama at the reception.

The whole experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will never forget.

As luck would have it, after making it through Lemont’s run to the Class 6A football semifinals relatively healthy, Joe Hehir sprained his ankle during basketball practice in late November.

Sidelined for six games, the senior guard and returning all-conference performer made his return to the court Friday in the Indians’ 86-51 win over Eisenhower. He showed little sign of the injury, scoring 10 points and grabbing seven steals.

“It’s getting a lot better,” said Hehir, who played in the team’s first two con-

“Friday night, I couldn’t feel it that much.

The pain went down, the swelling went down. I am not 100 percent yet but it’s getting a lot better.”

Having Hehir back at full strength will make Lemont more dangerous than it

already is. The Indians are off to a perfect 9-0 start on the young season with many of their victories coming by double-digits.

“We are confident and we work as hard as we can at all times,” Hehir said.

“Everyone seems to like each other and that always helps out because we are around each other a lot. We really like the family aspect, that means a lot to us.”

After a stretch of 10 years during which the Indians were either at or below the .500-mark, the squad has gone 34-3 since the start of last season, a mark that is making others take notice.

“No doubt we are getting respect now,”

Hehir said. “Last week, we broke into the top 25 in the state and we are excited about that. We want to keep going up and get as high as we can.”

The next 10 days is an important stretch for Lemont. The Indians face Marian Catholic at the Crete-Monee Shootout Saturday before opening the Romeoville Christmas Classic on Wednesday. The team came in third at the holiday event last winter.

“The game against Marian Catholic is a huge game for us,” Hehir said. “After that, we head to Romeoville. This year, we want to win first. No ifs, ands or buts, that’s our goal.”

former Wheaton Warrenville South kicker has made 22-of-31 field goals, which included three 50-yarders. The 22 makes ties a single-season program record and he also set a new standard with 78 consecutive PATs. Hinsdale Central graduate Jack Allen has also been a major contributor after taking a redshirt season last fall. The 6-foot-1, 295-pounder is starting at center and can also play a guard position on the offensive line.

The senior, who is 10-1 on the season, lost 12-6 to undefeated Joe Ariola of Oak Park in the championship match.

The Indians will next compete in a quad at Oak Lawn on Friday followed by the Palatine Classic Dec. 27-28.

Boys swimming Michael Diorio breaking the school record in the 500 free was the highlight of Thursday’s dual meet victory for Lemont over Evergreen Park (100-70).

Diorio finished the race in 5:24.10, beating the next closest competitor by nearly a minute.

Scott Matulik placed first in the 200 free with a time of 2:13.27, Connor Ganzer won the 200 IM in 2:25.14 and the 100 backstroke in 1:07.52 and Brent Husa emerged victorious in the 100 fly after touching the wall in 1:01.57. Joe Ziebell also won the 100 free in 57.82 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.46.

Placing second were Brent Husa (200 IM) and Justin Stanwyck (50 free).

The 200 medley relay was first in 1:55.99, the 200 free relay won in 1:43.76 and the 400 free grouping placed first in 3:50.84.

News Facts 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.32 percent with an average 0.7 point for the week ending December 13, 2012, down from last week when it averaged 3.34 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 3.94 percent.

15-year FRM this week averaged 2.66 percent with an average 0.6 point, down from last week when it averaged 2.67 percent. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 3.21 percent.
