Merry Christmas!

I

have shared a story similar to this a few years ago, however, it seems to always be present during this time of year. Back in early November I overheard a woman say to her teenage daughter, “I wish Christmas was over!” I think she was annoyed about the crowded store. I couldn’t help myself and offered a genuine side-note to her dismay with a gentle reminder. I said, “The truth is the Christmas season has not even started.” She looked at me, not with annoyance, but rather a look of “Do you see what is around us?” - most likely all the Christmas themes and aggressive shoppers. I smiled and told her that I was here to purchase candles: 3 purple, one pink and one white to help my family prepare for the upcoming Christmas season. Interested, she asked what the candles had to do with preparing for Christmas. So I told her we celebrate the Season of Advent which starts four Sundays prior to Christmas Day. It’s a time to prepare our hearts for the birth of Jesus. Continuing, I explained that these 4 weeks simply enrich the celebration of Christmas and allow us to have a God-focused experience, both precious and peaceful during what is often a hectic holiday season. Now, I have asked the question and I’m sure you’re aware of all the discussion boards online too, so I’ll share my take on the retailers starting so early with Christmas. To me, it’s no big deal. In my home we are still decorated for Thanksgiving until the Turkey is eaten and the table is cleared! Then my daughter, Caroline, and I start the transformation. We take down the fall décor and bring out the Christmas tree, the Nativity, and arrange the Advent Wreath along with the myriad of other decorations that will be scattered throughout the house. To give you full disclosure, every year I say, “I’m going to get a head start on Christmas gifts!” Well, it never happens. I guess I am a true calendar girl and like to stick to the tradition of December Christmas shopping. But I can assure you Christmas will be celebrated from December 25th through to the Epiphany on January 6th. Stay true to your traditions! When they are done right, they lend a certain magic and spirit to our lives. And continuing them in your own family is a great way to teach your children about your family’s cultural and religious history which adds to their personal identity. We would love to know your traditions. Maybe we can publish them next year to inspire others. Blessings to all our readers and advertisers.

forced apology

impulse buying

Think about it. As an adult, if you were forced to apologize to someone before you were ready, would it really make things better? Probably not. Then why do we force our kids to apologize? Obviously, it’s important to right a wrong, but forcing an immediate apology can send the wrong message. It’s better to give them some time to process their feelings and empower them to find their own way to repair a situation – with a little help and encouragement, of course.

To avoid impulse buying this holiday season, stay focused when shopping. Research says that distracted buyers are impulse buyers. When our self-regulatory resources are depleted or pre-occupied, we’re not only willing to buy things not on our list; we’re willing to spend more on them. So, see if you can get someone to watch the young’uns while you shop. And avoid talking on the phone. Of course, if the deal is just too good to pass up - or it makes you really happy, we won’t judge. Happy shopping!

Do Talk to Strangers We were told as children not to talk to strangers. We tell our children not to talk to strangers. But now new research says talking to strangers could be good for you. Of course, safety is important, but chatting with fellow travelers, shoppers or store clerks can give you (and the recipient) an emotional boost. It seems that when we small talk with strangers, we put on our happy face. And that can affect our mood, not to mention make the whole experience more enjoyable.

BIRTH ORDER SCHMIRTH ORDER Birth order is fascinating to think about, but it doesn’t predetermine personality. Temperament and the way a child reacts to their situation are what actually have the biggest influence. The parent’s child-raising style has an impact too. That’s why it’s important to avoid labels and recognize the positive traits of each child no matter where they fall in the ranks. Acknowledge the pros and cons of each position if/when it comes up and give support as needed. Also, make sure everyone is getting quality one on one time.

Playing with your preschooler Parenting Expert, Dr. Laura Marham says playing physical games with our children makes them more cooperative and parents more energized. No, really. Children need to play and physical play reduces stress hormones and increases bonding hormones for both of us. After a long day at school and work, two to ten minutes of active play should be plenty to make both parent and child feel better. Then we can settle down for a relaxing, cooperative evening. It’s worth a try.

questions

q&a Charlie’s Mom Q. My child is starting pre-school soon. I’m not sure where he should be with language skills. A. Preschoolers (age 3-5) often have a lot to say. They love imaginative play and are usually understood by peers and adults. As a general rule, 3 yr old children should be understood about 75%-100% of the time by unfamiliar listeners (Bowen 1998). They should be able to follow simple instructions, answer and ask simple questions, understand and use descriptive language and have a large repertoire of nouns and verbs. If you are concerned about your child’s speech and language, contact a Speech-Language Pathologist for an evaluation. Let’s Talk Speech | Meredith Sorokwasz M.A., CCC-SLP Owner / Speech-Language Pathologist

Vicky, mom of 4 Q. I am struggling with making breakfast for my family every morning. Seems we all eat the same thing every day. Are eggs appropriate several times a week? A. Great news, eggs really are incredible! Yep! The 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans found that there is not a risk of too much cholesterol from eggs for healthy adults and kids. Although eggs are high in cholesterol, the effect on blood cholesterol is minimal when compared to the effect from trans fats and saturated fats. Have the eggs with a side of avocado and nix the bacon, sausages and ham. If you are healthy, consume up to 300 mg of cholesterol a day; if you have diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease, limit total daily cholesterol intake to 200 mg a day. Mary E. Caldwell, RDN | Registered and Licensed Dietitian

Maggie, mom of 1 (first grader) Q. What is an appropriate Christmas gift for teachers? What if your child has several teachers? Give all of them the same gift or a different gift for each one? A. It’s totally appropriate to give them all the same “homemade” gift. You could create cute packages for gift cards. Maybe use a coffee cup and fill it with goodies and a Starbucks gift card. And there are always those large tins of flavored popcorn. Just needs a bow on top and a cute card! And keep in mind Pinterest has a load of great ideas on this topic. www.pinterest.com/suburbanparent/pins/

BRANDON, DAD OF 2

ASKS...

Q. Interested to know best practice for avoiding the flu this season. A. Prevention is key! The flu shot is still the best protection against the flu, and the CDC recommends that all healthy children receive the vaccine. Make sure your kids know to wash their hands often and to cough into their elbow or cover their mouths when sneezing. If your children already have the flu, keep them hydrated, comfortable, and well-rested while you ride it out. Pick any clear fluid (water, juices, broth or electrolyte solutions like Pedialyte) and watch out for signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, cracked lips, cold or dry skin, and low energy. The body’s lowered immunity can also lead to secondary bacterial infections, so alert your pediatrician if your child develops difficulty breathing or any other unusual symptoms.

grew up with a traditional Advent Calendar, and by traditional I mean a cheap cardboard calendar with tiny Christmas-themed chocolates behind perforated doors marked with a December date. The dates were scattered haphazardly around the calendar, making me hunt and drool for my sweet holiday season treat and also making me think that after looking for December 12th for 3 minutes, someone definitely forgot to add it to the calendar.

14

DECEMBER 2017 Let our advertisers know you found them in Dallas Parent

My husband and I bought this kind of Advent Calendar for our son for the first few years of his life, even when he was all gummy and toothless, because it was tradition and we, as his loving parents, could help him out and eat the chocolate. Then I had a realization last year. While one could argue that chocolate in any form is good just for the simple fact that it’s chocolate, I have to disagree. The chocolate in cardboard Advent Calendars is not quite fit for

human consumption. This chocolate is more like a brown crayon smashed up and molded into an angel. Not all chocolate should be treated equally, and this is coming from a woman who would probably eat chocolate that was melted in my purse or car seat if my hormones were not wired right that day. Last year, I decided to change things up a bit and start a new holiday tradition. We used our cute Christmas countdown calendar that is made from felt, has a jolly Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty on it, and is adorned with pockets for December 1 through December 24, all in perfect, numerical order. There is a small satin candy cane tied to a ribbon that we put in the pocket of the day to mark getting closer to the arrival of Santa...I mean Jesus’ birth. Yes, yes, the birth of Jesus. I had dreams of putting a treat like a Hershey’s Kiss or some other small chocolate morsel into the pocket each night. And who did our son think was delivering those treats? An elf of course! Because it’s only natural to continue to lie to children about strangers and little men and giant bunnies coming into their homes in the middle of the night. I must have also had dreams that an actual elf would be doing all of this work for me because the amount of forethought and labor that was involved was exhausting. So, I would like to blame the following mishaps on someone who I will call Elf. Elf must have been overworked by the Head Honcho or he was out partying all night. And I can tell you, since I know Elf pretty well; he was definitely not hitting the party scene. Elf can’t party like she, ahem HE, used to. Just two weeks in, a total of 14 days, and Elf forgot to put a treat in the pocket 8 times! Each morning, our son sprinted to the countdown calendar in hopes of eating chocolate at 7 a.m. But one morning I heard, “Mom! There’s nothing in the pocket!” Grrr, I thought. So I ran to the cabinet, grabbed a Hershey’s Kiss, and asked – “Are you sure? Look around, like over there (far from where this calendar is),” while desperately trying to divert his attention. Mommy Elf walked over to calendar, Kiss cupped in hand, looked in pocket, slipped Kiss in. “Hey, that Elf stuck it waaay down in this tiny, one-inch pocket where a Kiss could possibly get stuck,” I said in my most surprised voice. And with that, my son pulled out the Kiss, smiled and exclaimed, “Yay!” - while shoving chocolate in his mouth before he had a crumb of breakfast. Crisis averted! Another morning, our son flew his jolly little self to that calendar and I heard, “Mom! There’s nothing in the pocket!” Repeat above scenario. Get another big smile from my son. And think to myself, seriously, Elf, get it together. And on another bright December morn I heard, “Mom! There’s nothing in the pocket AGAIN!” And I think I heard him whisper under his breath, “What is wrong with this elf?” Oh for the love of Chocolate Kiss! So I told my son to go into another room to get something for me while I placed a chocolate kiss on the bench beneath the calendar. “Hey, buddy! It looks like it fell! It’s right here on the bench!” One would wonder why I give myself yet another stressor during the holidays! But I do; and I do it for the smile. I do it for the simple joy of a child at Christmas time. Even if he remembers back on this little tradition and thinks, what was that Elf on? SP

Twelve Days Christmas Not just a song, but a catechism. A requested reprint. The Twelve Days of Christmas song was created in England in the 16th to

18th centuries. Written as a kind of secret catechism that could be sung in public without fear of arrest, each verse refers to a teaching of church doctrine with the partridge being Christ who died on a tree and the “True Love” being God the Father, who gave us all gifts.

Each element in the song is a code word for religious truth: 1. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus. 2. The two turtledoves are the Old and New

Testaments. 3. Three French hens stand for faith, hope and love. 4. The four calling birds are the four Gospels. 5. The five gold rings recall the Hebrew Torah (Law), or the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. 6. The six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation.

My daughter (age 7) and I were enjoying a walk around the neighborhood when she asked, “Mom are you happy with this walk?” I replied, “Well yes, why do you ask?” And she said, “Well, you forgot to wear your FitBit so it really doesn’t count.” So I let her know that all through our walk my heart was creating a memory that no FitBit could ever count. And she replied, “Hmm, like a HeartBit!” — Delilah, mom of 4

7. The seven swans a-swimming represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

8. The eight maids a-milking are the eight Beatitudes.

9. Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.

10. The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten

Commandments. 11. Eleven pipers piping represent the eleven faithful Apostles. 12. Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles Creed.

winter goodness Squashes! Their tough shells protect the wonderfully sweet, rich flesh inside which makes them excellent storage vegetables. Whichever variety you choose, always pick a winter squash that feels heavy for its size. Learn about two of our faves!

Acorn Squash It’s sweet and moist with a tender flesh. Perfect for roasting, baking, and mashing. The skins of acorn squash are nutritious, and the ridges are perfect for slicing after you roast it. Go ahead; eat the skin!

Butternut Squash This squash is also very nutritious because its flesh is filled with vitamins A & C. Roasting gives a naturally sweet flavor. Don’t ignore the seeds – they are also packed with protein and heart healthy fats. Makes a good puree for soups!

your waist matters Measuring your waist circumference is a simple and practical way to assess abdominal fat that can lead to chronic disease risks. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS.gov) indicates there is an increased risk of chronic diseases for women with a waist circumference of more than 35 inches and for men with a waist circumference of more than 40 inches.

Holiday Road Trip? Make sure you’re snack savvy, by not relying on foods with empty calories that won’t power you up for your road trip. Instead, bring along snacks that will fuel you with protein, fiber, and healthy carbohydrates - like unsalted nuts, raw veggies (precut), fruits, whole grain crackers, hummus, and dried fruit. If you have a sweet tooth, reach for Dark Chocolate and a handful of almonds (remember, its best to chew almonds 15 times to extract all their goodness).

tip For an all-day pickme-up, dab a little lemon or orange essential oil on a handkerchief and tuck it in your pocket.
