he power of love is held within each of us every moment. I can’t help but think of all the ways love has been expressed to me and how I have expressed my own love to others. And to be honest, I need to be better at it! Sometimes we encounter love in very quiet moments, reflective moments, and even painful moments. Those moments when you feel like you are being spoken to and respond by listening. Reflecting back to the love I felt when I first held each one of my babies in my arms can put me right back to those moments. Like right now, my heart is racing thinking about the enormous amount of love that I immediately felt for them, and I still do. Where does this innate love come from? It’s so different from any other kind of love. (Love of coffee, and other things.) When you really think about it, you’ll realize that it’s through the love of God that we are given this innate love. I can easily recall, and often share, an experience I had when I was very pregnant with my first child. Like most new moms to be, we question if we are ready. We prepare everything and then we WAIT! While I was “nesting” in my son’s nursery, rubbing my belly and telling him how much I loved him. I noticed a bird’s nest on the top of our arbor just outside the window. In it was a family of mourning doves. Watching these birds nurture their young (and amazingly, they co-parent the needs of their chicks), I was able to see that God gave these small creatures, in their nature, the ability to care for their young. So, of course He prepared me; for I was created in His image and likeness! I am so thankful to have the love of God and even more thankful to know that we can see God’s love in everything he has created. He creates us and then WAITS – for us to recognize His love and to show our love of Him.

After birth parents should massage their baby’s gums with their little finger, a soft cloth or a rubber fingertip toothbrush. You should do this a few times a day for no more than two or three seconds. By doing this consistently it will prevent most fussing and fretting when the infant is eventually taken to the dentist.

TODDLER PLAN

Doing sit ups with your baby is a great exercise to strengthen the muscles in her shoulders, core, arms and back. But only if she can support her head – usually starting around 6 weeks. Just pull your baby toward you gently by the forearms. Even though you’re doing the pulling, she’ll naturally flex her ab muscles and work to keep her head aligned with her body. You’ll only be able to pull her an inch or two at first, but eventually she’ll make it into a full sitting position, which will be super exciting for her as she gets closer to your face!

It’s recommended to not use fluoridated toothpaste until age 3. After age 3, parents should be supervising their child while brushing. Use no more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and make sure your child does not swallow excess toothpaste. And remember to sing, “This is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush are teeth… And we do it every morning.”

PARENT CRAWL MILESTONE COMPARISONS The best advice we’ve heard for new parents is to stop comparing your kids (to siblings, to neighbors, or to anyone). Every child is different and reaches different milestones at different times. That includes sitting, crawling, walking and talking. It’s when you stop seeing gradual progress that you can become concerned. Talk to your pediatrician about your concerns.

Before a child starts to crawl (around 6 months or so), doctors recommend parents get down on their own hands and knees and crawl around the house. When standing, we can’t always see what’s under the couch or behind a chair. When we get down low, we’ll see what they’ll see and can pick up any loose or dangerous items before baby finds them. Once baby’s on the move, there’s no stopping them.

Can I take my kids on vacation this summer if I share custody with my ex-husband?

Summer is an excellent time for a family vacation. When a custody order is in place, it is common to be concerned about each parent’s rights to travel with their kids. Custody orders detail visitation schedules for each parent’s time during the school year and during summer, often including travel limitations. Each custody order is unique, so it is best to start by reviewing yours. If it is confusing or you want to change it, then you should contact an experienced family law attorney to guide you through the process. If your custody order does not allow for summer travel, you may be eligible to modify it to allow you to take that much anticipated summer vacation. I’m still self-conscious about my crooked teeth. Is it possible to be “too old” for orthodontics?

You can never be too old to begin orthodontic treatment as long as your teeth and gums are in good health and you see a dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups. It’s not uncommon for 70 year old’s to want to make their smile better! The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an evaluation for orthodontic treatment as early as age 7. Early detection of orthodontic problems is important in order to take corrective action (Phase 1 treatment) to avoid a more difficult treatment later. The typical age for treatment in children is around age 12. This is when all the permanent teeth have fully erupted, including the second molars, also known as 12-year molars. ne day, you pull on your favorite maternity clothes, glance lovingly at your baby sleeping next to you, and realize that it’s been a month since your baby was born! Though you’re no longer pregnant, you still might not fit comfortably into your pre-pregnancy clothes just yet. Most moms are too busy with the amazing, exhausting work of caring for their newborn to think too long about what will fit comfortably on their new curves. If it’s time to pack away the maternity clothes, but you’re not back to your regular size just yet, here are some ideas to help you easily and inexpensively find something comfortable to wear.

EMBRACE YOUR SHAPE

When you shop, make sure you are buying clothes for your body as it is rather than what you want it to be. Go ahead and invest in a pair of jeans that look awesome on you right now, not in six months. Invest in a few shirts in amazing colors and fit the body you have right now. Your body will continue to change and most moms find that their size decreases in a few months, but in the meantime, show some love to your current shape and it will show in your style.

FIND THE PERFECT PAIR OF PANTS

Once you find pants that fit well, the rest will seem easy. Assign someone to babysit while you shop for pants, even if they just come along and hold the baby while you hit the dressing room. One mom says, “Be sure to take someone with you who will be honest about what looks good.” Go to a store with lots of different fits or brands to find out what works for your body. Make fit come first so that you can concentrate on the work of caring for a newborn, rather than having to worry about pulling up a pair of constantly sagging jeans.

GIVE ‘EM THE OLD RAZZLEDAZZLE

Wear all those bright, pretty colors that you love, and don’t be afraid to stand out. It helps to find shirts that fit loosely in front, or have a pattern to them, if you feel sensitive about

your midsection. Shirts that are tight, shiny, or any solid color may highlight curves that you don’t want to accentuate. You can also wear a long fitted tank top underneath your shirts to smooth the line and cover your midsection if your shirt rides up. Wearing colors that you love and experimenting with patterns will help you remember to celebrate your body as it is right now.

DON’T BREAK THE BANK

Money is usually a bit tight at this time and you don’t know how long you will be your current size. However, there are ways to buy clothes without spending too much. One way is to shop consignment stores, which carry clothes for much less than retail stores. You also have the option of bringing in your old clothes in exchange for credit at the store. Brigitte, mom of two says, “Consignment shopping also helps at the time when you have lots of spit up and spills. After both my kids were born, I shopped my entire wardrobe at consignment stores.” Consignment stores are a great resource for clothes you don’t plan to wear forever.

NO TIME? MAIL YOURSELF A WARDROBE!

Once you know the size and brands that fit your body, you can shop clearance items online and never have to leave the house to shop. Lisa, mom of two, shares that she bought several items at an online consignment store. “I got great

deals on items to get me through the first few months when I didn’t have time to go out shopping for myself.” In this day and age, there are many online resources to take advantage of as a new mom and make your shopping trips easier. Knowing a company has an easy return policy helps too, when you’re still finding out what fits best.

YOUR GREATEST ACCESSORY

Wear your baby! Wearing your baby in a carrier makes your little one feel protected and secure. Try on a few different types of carriers with your baby and pick the one that works best and fits comfortably. Learn how to put it on and take it off and get comfortable with it. The closeness between you and your baby will be beneficial, and yes, it all fits right over that extra baby weight! Some of the body changes you go through after you have a baby are temporary. Some changes are for keeps. Own your own body image and be confident in yourself, because you are beautiful, life-giving, strong, and more than just your body. Take time to appreciate how your life has been indelibly changed in ways you never could have dreamed. You are a mom! Own it. You are soft, comforting, beautiful, tired, and amazing.

But parents who put off a trip to the orthodontist until their child is on the cusp of the teen years could be waiting too late. Plenty of problems can start developing long before all of a child’s permanent teeth have arrived. The question then becomes when – and how – to intervene. And the answer won’t necessarily be the same from every ortho-

dontist or dentist you consult. “This is definitely a confusing topic,” says Dr. Jamie Reynolds (AskDrReynolds.com), an orthodontist, national and international lecturer, and author of World Class Smiles Made in Detroit. “Depending on whom you ask, you will get a variety of answers about what treatment is necessary and when; and how exactly it should proceed. And getting more opinions doesn’t always help because you may end up with several different – and conflicting – opinions.” Reynolds suggests having a child examined by an orthodontist by age 7, which is also the recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontists. Usually, those initial exams are free. Even that early in life, he says, there are four major things an orthodontist can look at: Are the jaws growing properly? The upper jaw stops growing about age 8, much earlier than the lower jaw and the rest of the body. “Because of this, orthodontists can identify issues with the growth of the upper jaw earlier and can recommend treatments for any deficiencies,” Reynolds says. For example, the most common growth issue is that the upper jaw is not wide enough. A device called a rapid-palatal expander can help with this. Is there enough room for teeth to grow in? A tooth is said to be “impacted” when it can’t grow in because something is in the way (such as another tooth or an extra tooth) or because it is growing in the wrong direction. “Impacted teeth are a pain to deal with, both for the doctor

and the patient,” Reynolds says. “It’s much harder for the doctor to get access to impacted teeth and bring them into the proper position. For the patient, a small surgery may be required to uncover the tooth so the orthodontist can begin to straighten it.” Early intervention, though, can often create enough room for teeth to grow in properly, he says, making future treatment much easier and more comfortable for the patient. How are the teeth that are not yet in the mouth developing – and are the correct number present? It might seem surprising, but it’s not unusual for people to have either missing or extra teeth, Reynolds says. Extra teeth usually cause more problems as they crowd out other teeth. That means early screening is key, and often those extra teeth are removed. With missing teeth, treatment usually doesn’t happen until all the permanent teeth have grown in. Does the child snore, and is there an airway obstruction? Sleep apnea, a condition in which a person temporarily stops breathing while sleeping, can start at an early age. Children can be diagnosed as early as ages 4 or 5, Reynolds says, and often snoring or purring like a kitten while sleeping is a sign. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which an orthodontist can treat. “Most kids who will need orthodontic treatment can wait until they are 12 or 13,” Reynolds says. “But it’s still important to have them checked out at a much earlier age, just in case there are problems that can be solved with early intervention.”

RINSE BEFORE BRUSHING Pregnancy can have an effect on stomach acids that can induce vomiting, which can eat away at your teeth, but before you brush, first swish and spit using water or diluted mouth rinse. Follow up by brushing your teeth about 30 minutes later.

So the more flavors a mom can incorporate into her diet during pregnancy and breast-feeding, the more her baby may like and accept the introduction of new foods.
