Paradise Outdoor Advertising has always done things a bit differently. Over its 31 years of operation it has grown to become one of the largest regional billboard operators in Australia but has remained family owned and proudly Townsville based. As a North Queensland business that has grown with the success of the communities it serves, it has been a big supporter of local charities, providing more than a $100,000 worth of billboard advertising annually to vital community services. But like everything about this business, its approach to philanthropy is definitely not, business as usual. Paradise Outdoor CEO Mitch James says the decisions made about which organizations to support each year are made by Paradise staff, not management. “Each year we ask the people who work for Paradise to tell us who we should support. It’s a decision we make in the lunchroom, not the boardroom,” Mitch says.

And I think we get to know the people who are making a difference in our community and we learn to appreciate their struggles.” In recent years Paradise has provided major sponsorships to organizations such as The Townsville Hospital Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, the North Qld Wildlife Carers, and Cancer Charity, the Cure Starts Now. This year the Paradise team has decided to put their considerable weight behind the AEIOU Foundation, a children’s charity that gets little attention, but one that is providing a vital service for North Queensland families. The AEIOU Foundation provide early intervention for children with autism, operating nine centres across Queensland, and its first interstate centre opening in Adelaide last October.
If you have a child with an autism diagnosis who is aged between 2 ½ and 6 years, or if you care for a child with autism, AEIOU can help. AEIOU Foundation CEO, Alan Smith, says the AEIOU’s program is full-time, providing 20 hours of intensive intervention each week. Families also benefit from access to specialist long-day care outside of the program times. He says each AEIOU centre was staffed with full-time specialist early childhood teachers and skilled learning facilitators, with support from speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and behaviour therapists. A prevalence study by the Australian Advisory Board on Autism Spectrum Disorders concluded that one in 160 Australian children aged between 6 and 12 years have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. That means the condition is now more common than cerebral palsy, diabetes, deafness, blindness and leukaemia put together. Mitch says his team had the opportunity to visit AEIOU’s early intervention learning centre in Townsville and we saw first-hand the wonderful work the centre is doing with children and their families affected by autism, which is why their team chose to support AEIOU.
“Helping AEIOU means that a young person with ASD can get the right support early in their life, which means a much better chance of living successfully in the community. “Post-school life for young people with high functioning autism can mean social isolation and a crippling loss of confidence. For example, unemployment rates for young people with ASD are up to 50% - with 50-70% experiencing anxiety and depression.”

The support will see billboards erected locally and across regional Queensland designed to build awareness about their essential services and drive vital donations needed to keep the doors open. The partnership between the two organisations doesn’t end with the formal agreement; a number of Paradise Outdoor Advertising’s employees have committed to participating in AEIOU’s Take a Hike Townsville on Sunday 14 June by tackling 10.km, 21km or 42km.
