GOD HAS A PLAN, KEEP GRINDING What a week it has been leading up to the release of the second edition. Five days ago all my equipment; including my laptop, phone, external hard drive and brand new sneakers were stolen out of my room in Gugulethu. The magazine was stored in the laptop and only backed up on the external hard drive. Yes, I know, it is a silly move not to store it on the cloud. Immediately, the following day, after the incident, I left Cape Town. I needed to recoup. I went back home, to Gqeberha, to hug my mother and pray for the way forward. The project that you are about to read is made up of hard work, no sleep, support and faith of the Almighty. Without prayer, we would have easily sat down and quit. But we can never live a life filled with regret, what happened in the past, is all in the past. The next step is to figure out a way to restructure and rework everything from scratch.Sills

Of course, this magazine was not done alone, thanks to the support shown by my family and friends. I am grateful to my mother, uMamNgwevhu, uRhudulu, uSkhoma, uHlatyane, uZulu for the guidance she has shown us throughout this difficult time with prayer. I am grateful to my partner, Kelly Baloyi, for trusting us through this process. It was difficult and exhausting, yet we prospered. To my cousin, Ncedo Marele, ungadinwa Mqadi, Ngcwina, Mphankomo, Qengeba, Jola. Thank you for allowing me to work on your work station during these times. To Dr Zanele Menze, who was busy at home but was able to listen and assist with her cellphone, we are grateful, MamCirha, Ntswentswe, Nojaholo. We are thankful to SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS partner, Aasif Sirkhotte for assisting with the magazine cover and the magazine itself. And, to everyone else who was involved in the success of this masterpiece, your support does not go unnoticed. Uyabulela uDlamini, uZizi, uJamakaSjadu, uFakade, ingxow'enoboya, iMfengu. The road to success is never straight; there are thorns, hills and pitstops along the way. This issue has a mix of different backgrounds, stories of hope, success and generational wealth. To echo Dr Menze's powerful words, "we are breaking generational curses". Camagu!

MEETING THE FUTURE HALFWAY WITH BATSAMAYI BATSAMAYI HAS A VISION TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN SOLUTIONS AND PEOPLE IN ALL AFRICAN COMMUNITIES BY ENGINEERING SOFTWARE.

"USING SOFTWARE INNOVATION TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS FOR AFRICA.

The name BATSAMAYI is Sotho for “walkers”. Since the Company’s inception in 2013, they have grown a team of 23 talented members, all under the age of 35 , with the common goal of creating an Africa that can keep pace with the rest of the world. Their plan of reaching this goal, together, is implemented by engineering bespoke software that can assist in meeting all basic human needs, across all communities, and aligning their brand with clients who share the same vision. They primarily focus on quality assurance, automation testing, software engineering and outsourced software for various South African and international clients. Networking, loyalty and hard work, have been at the pinnacle of who they are, as an intrinsically teamfocused and family-oriented team of individuals. Prior to founding BATSAMAYI, Managing Director, Cinga Nyangintsimbi, along with three budding university classmates, was tasked with creating a software development project in his third year of studies at Nelson Mandela University.

His group developed a patient-recordmanagement application called iSeeYou. The aim of the project was to assist people to better manage their medical records. The success of the project, bolstered an idea of a company that could deliver software solutions of value to all who used them. And so, BATSAMAYI was founded - on this principle, of using software innovation to provide solutions for Africa. The BATSAMAYI slogan, “Meeting the future... halfway!” is directly related to their vision, and consequently the company. Cinga says the majority of the BATSAMAYI team attended Nelson Mandela University, “which holds a special place in our hearts.” “We align ourselves with clients who share our values, and our vision. We assist them to achieve their goals through our offer of bespoke, effective and functional software solutions to produce their desired results, using the highest possible standards of quality."

"We therefore seek to provide seamless software experiences, allowing for faster, more efficient and reliable solutions,” he says. Although the BATSAMAYI team is relatively ‘small' in the context of the software Industry, they are establishing themselves as viable suppliers for largescale clients. Cinga believes being a young, skilled and problem-solving team is one of their advantages in the industry. “The team lives to solve problems. Individuals are assigned to projects based on their strengths and passions, so their best effort is always given; our scale also allows our team to be aware of all aspects of the

business and so they are personally motivated to assist in the growth of the company through successful projects,” he says. Recently, BATSAMAYI partnered with a local brand and business strategist, Aasif Sirkhotte, to host campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the company and its team. For more information about the projects, careers, and services, visit: www.batsamayi.com or email info@batsamayi.com. GARETH DUNCAN SHARES HIS ROAD TO SUCCESS In a country with over 7.2 million unemployed people, many young South African professionals fear leaving their jobs to pursue passions beyond their careers in case they do not succeed. For 31-year-old Gareth Duncan, the idea of failing did not stand in the way of him pursuing his passion in entrepreneurship seven years ago. Leaving a promising but already successful career as a sports journalist at 23, Duncan took that leap of faith to venture towards becoming a young entrepreneur. GD Industries, a brand and media development company, was launched in August 2015 and would help start-up, as well as established brands and companies, grow. Over a year later in August 2016 after a trip to Thailand, Duncan launched his second business, a custom-tailored suit line known to many a Capetonian as GD Suits, which has popular media personalities in its database of clients. Last year, he formed part of a team that launched what might be the country's first Coloured-owned craft beer brewing company, Northern Bru, which had its first brew Kuila Lager sold out in the first two weeks of hitting the shelves. Duncan has also been a guest speaker for TedX talks as well as the Glenfiddich Maverick which is an entrepreneurship campaign by Glendfiddich.

MARCH/APRIL 2021 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS

"THE FEELING OF HAVING A GREATER PURPOSE KEPT ME MOTIVATED. "Doing the TedX talks was interesting because I spoke on an international level and got to network with a lot. "Glenfiddich was also a great opportunity in endorsing me as a young entrepreneur," he says. Reading this, one would think the road Duncan has ravelled was paved with roses, but what some might not know is that his first business failed in the first six months. Despite emerging as one of the top journalism alumni from his alma mater, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and working as a sportswriter for one of the country's biggest independent publishing houses, Highbury Media, the passion to succeed in business was too strong to ignore.

"Having to adjust from being a media professional to an entrepreneur was difficult. “What I have experienced as an employee was about 30% of an entrepreneur's experience. “This is because the latter is usually involved in the entire process of running a business,” he says. Duncan says he did not know much, but his confidence kicked in and saw him through. "What I did not know, I learned through advice from those more knowledgeable than I was," he says. Critics unfortunately always come with the territory when taking on adventures and might be demotivating. For Duncan, however, this was a motivation for him to succeed in his new venture. “Despite the confidence that came with having supportive parents, the feeling of having a greater purpose away from media kept me motivated.” His first three months in entrepreneurship were great for him as the business was making money, but the next three [months] did not go so well and he did not make enough money.

SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS | EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“It is difficult when you have so much financial stress, that is when desperation kicks in, but one always has to stay focused.” The saving grace for him during this time were the goals he had set for his business. Duncan says analysing the situation would help identify solutions to get rid of the challenges. Today, he is comfortable in his position as a businessman and faces challenges head-on.

This is made easier by the four-year-long goals he hopes to achieve in his businesses. Had he not taken the leap of faith and left his career in media, Duncan believes that he would be stuck in a career he was not happy in. “I do not think there is no job in the world that makes me as happy as running a business does. With all its challenges, I would do it all over again.” SJ

TUMI ZANTSI

FIRE PIECE

LEADERSHIP, PARLIAMENT AND GENERATIONAL WEALTH By Lonwabo Marele

MARCH/APRIL 2021 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS

Legislative functioning is critical for the deepening of our democracy, says Tumi Zantsi, a monitoring and evaluation analyst at the Parliament of South Africa. Zantsi recognizes the significance of her individual contribution in the greater national project of building a better world. It is not often that she feels she is exactly where she should be with her work. She believes she is. It is her role to monitor and evaluate the implementation of Parliament’s strategic plan, and whether the institution is moving any closer to its strategic objectives. The Kimberley-born leader has an affinity for big picture thinking, strategic planning and the deep need to do purposeful work that makes a difference. With close to two decades of experience in the public sector, she has a background in strategy execution, research and monitoring, evaluation and learning, and youth and women’s empowerment. She graduated from Stellenbosch University with a Master’s in Political Management, followed by a Master’s in Program Evaluation from the University of Cape Town. "I wanted to write an entrance letter to Rhodes University so I needed a practice run. I wrote to Stellenbosch because I wanted to practice but as it happens I did very well. I had no idea where on the map they are but it was really an amazing experience I made a lot of friends," she says.

Her studies focused on education and capacity building. She has coordinated a multi-platform youth project for Parliament, lectured at a free university, and mentored young girls in their Matric year since 2013. "By the time I was 10 years old I left my grandmothers school for a private school. I spent the first few weeks wondering who cleans the school because in my old school we would clean on a Friday. "That was a vivid difference but for me it spoke volumes about the kind of education some people got because they don't have money or an alternative school to attend. Look at the kids I used to go to school with and how they have gotten in life, it is not because they didn't have potential or talent, it is literally the type of school they went to and the exposure they had to different experiences. "It engrained to me the importance of school, all types of education and being exposed to different people and places," she says. She completed the Mandela Washington Fellowship and Apolitical Academy a couple of years ago. Upon completion, her aim was to continue working to improve evidence-based decision making in the legislative sector in order to improve the quality of life of South Africans. During the pandemic, she risked her life and co-founded Girls Leading Change, a non-profit organisation empowering young leaders in previously disadvantaged societies. They have delivered leadership seminars and dignity packs across the Western Province; in Gugulethu, Belhar, Kraaifontein, Klapmuts, Ladismith, Mamre, Atlantis and Ruyterwacht, out of many other places. They were also instrumental in helping three young girls from Mamre during their ongoing rape trial at the Atlantis Magistrate Court, last year. "Girls Leading Change is an opportunity not just for talking leadership, but also for real skills. Last year has been about extending and partnerships in communities. The next year is about building depth and creating spaces where girls can practice skills like organizing, public speaking and negotiating," she says. Her leadership skills were influenced by her grandparents, who are well known teachers and respected community leaders in Kimberley. Zantsi understands the pressure most young girls deal with in society. In her last year of her degree, she fell pregnant with her beautiful first born child. Rather than feeling sorry for herself, it was the best gift she could ever receive at the time. She now has three beautiful children with her husband, Lazola Zantsi. Her parents, grandparent and sisters call and visit her often for support. And, at the end of her degree at Maties, she graduated cum-laude. MARCH/APRIL 2021 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS

"EDUCATION WAS A BIG DEAL IN MY HOUSE. WE WERE ALWAYS ENCOURAGED TO DREAM BIG AND WORK HARD. I STARTED SCHOOL WHEN I WAS FOUR BECAUSE I WAS TALL ENOUGH.

"My parents emphasized education. I knew two things; I was going to have a healthy baby and I would finish my degree," she says. Zantsi says the difference between mistakes and failing is that mistakes can be avoided, but failing is a part of success. One of her mentees now studies at UCT. She felt intimidated about moving to the big city from the rural areas of the Eastern Cape. Zantsi told her all the positive possibilities that await her. She basically stayed alone back at home since her brother worked a lot, and, rather than being intimidated by other privileged kids, for most of them, staying alone would be a new challenge, something her mentee had already conquered at a young age. She mentioned, life is more about juggling four balls then it is about balance. In a year, she focuses her first six months on four things; work, study, family and running. She says the young girl studies BSc in Chemistry and takes many selfies. Zantsi is a firm believer of generational wealth, which is one of the simplest ways to teach the next generation about sustainability. "Generational wealth should be in all the curriculums. In Parliament we speak about poverty alleviation. I think we are almost dreaming when we talk about this or we are being very theoretical. What we should be talking about, in economics we call it, economic mobility - how does one go from living below the poverty line to being in the working class or middle class?" "I believe it is important to change the terminology because we have to talk about the mechanisms, 'how does one go from being poor to not being poor?'

"And it is not about the person who now earns $2 a day. You cannot teach poor people poverty alleviation, what you can teach them is, 'what skills you need, what type of education should they be focusing on, what type of jobs are needed and to be practical," she says. She further extends that one should be able to at least sustain themselves a year after they have left a job. They should be able to purchase property of their like, in any province, and still be left with enough to invest in diversified investments. Her mother recently retired and she took a chunk of money to invest at Allan Gray’s diversified portfolio. Her mother says, if she knew about compound interest 15 years ago, she would have invested earlier. Compounding is when the interest on a sum of money, either a deposit or loan, is added to the original amount so that the interest also earns interest. Albert Einstein's popular quote: “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. Those who understand it, earn it... those who don't, pay it” highlights the impact compounding can have over time, and also cautions that it can work either for or against you. When you invest, time allows your invested money to grow and compounding makes your money work harder for you. Given a long enough period to work, compounding can dramatically multiply the value of your investment so that less of your total investment will be from your contributions and more from growth. THE RETURN OF COBRA James Bongani Kamte is a South African professional golfer and a son of the soil. Breaking boundaries and giving back to society is no news to his caliber. 'Cobra' as he is fondly known from his early days on the football pitch, has a phenomenal background in sports. The golf bug bit him way back during the apartheid era, in his hometown of KwaNomzamo in Humansdorp. While black South Africans were only allowed to be caddies, Kamte and his brother, Ivan, made it their mission to study the game he would soon dominate for his country. After the abolishment of apartheid in 1994, he lived up to his promise of playing golf. He channeled his inner ambition by joining clubs in the St Francis area and Nomads Golf Club and received a scholarship to study at Woodridge College and Preparatory School where he matriculated by 2000. He excelled in the amateur ranks and soon moved up to Gauteng to play professional golf. Kamte's enthusiasm and skill saw him turn professional in 2003. He played for Gauteng's under-23 team and the Senior side, while receiving assistance from the Ernie Els Foundation. His hunger in the sport quickly began to attract attention in media and sponsorships. He won his first Sunshine Tour at the Seekers Travel Pro-Am tournament, at the Dainfern Country Club, in Johannesburg, on September 2007. The year was filled with success for Kamte, on The Sunshine Tour, he started his run in July by finishing second in the Samsung Royal Swazi Sun Open, closely followed by another secondplace finish at the Vodafone Origins Tournament in Pretoria, a week later.

His exhilarating form saw him, in January of 2008, at the European qualifying school, win the Sunshine Tour's Dimension Data Pro-Am, becoming the first black South African golfer to win an event on the summer swing of this tour. Kamte finished 22nd place on the qualifying school, right on the cut-off line for the top 30, earning his playing privileges on the main European Tour for the 2008 season. This made him the first black South African player to earn European Tour playing privileges since Vincent Tshabalala in 1976. He ended the season ranked 138th on the Order of Merit, meaning Kamte would have limited playing opportunities for the 2009 season. In 2009 when Kamte qualified for the U.S Open, to play alongside the legendary Tiger Woods, South African retired professional golfer who is widely considered to be one of the greatest golfers ever, Gary Player, said on the New York Daily News: "We need a Tiger Woods of South Africa. "Everybody is dying to see a black champion from South Africa. All of our champions in the past have all been white. "I told him (Kamte), if you did become a champion, you will have all the white and black businessmen pouring money into your pockets."

Player helped to bring black golfer Lee Elder and black tennis player Arthur Ashe to South Africa during apartheid. Hailed as one of South Africa's best black golfers of his generation, Kamte, a week leading up to the U.S Open, shot 133 at a sectional in Columbus, Ohio. He earned a coveted spot in only his second PGA Tour event and his dream round with Woods. Kamte felt like he was living a fairytale at the age of 26, standing side-by-side with Woods and even outdriving him at times over a nine-hole round. He has five major professional wins; including four Sunshine Tours and one Asian Tour victory. "Through my hard work I got to meet Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and spent a lot of time with Tiger Woods," says Kamte. "My goals were; winning, playing in the majors, travelling the world and to meet the best in the world," he says. Kamte lived in Asia, USA, UK, Gauteng and is currently based in Cape Town. "My second achievement was to play in the majors. You know it is not easy, golf is not easy. There are millions of guys that are professional golfers out there. So that was my achievement," says Kamte. MARCH/APRIL 2021 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS

"I HAD TO MAKE A DECISION: 'DO I WANT TO GET BACK OR DON'T I WANT TO GET BACK?' "My third achievement was for me to win internationally; to go out and win and play better and put SA on the map. I did that," he says. "I did that so I can motivate as much of the underprivileged players I can in SA so that they know, with God, it is possible," he says. Between 2011 and 2020, Kamte recalls it as the decade of turmoil and wilderness. Losing sponsorships was his wake up call. He moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town. "I had to make a decision, 'do I want to get back or don't I want to get back?' Fortunately, I found people along the way you know. They all got together and said, 'what is it that we can help with? Because we can see that you are frustrated and your career is going into the dustbin'. Kamte says, with grace, it took him three days to turn his life around. "I tell you, 10 years of being in the wilderness, it took me three days to be in a happy space again. That was the amazing part, seeing things differently, believing more than before and I know it's going to take a little more to achieve, but we will achieve... I don't like to talk about my game a lot, but I am going to win tournaments," he says. Now, with a fresh start, Kamte's character was built from the mud up. To look back to where he began, one of his main goals is to give back to Africa through life-skills clinics and opening a golfing academy. In 2015, he founded the James Kamte Foundation in his hometown of Humansdorp.

Kamte says he was once given an opportunity and his aim is to give the same opportunity to an undiscovered talent in Africa. "I don't give because I have, I give because I know what it is like not to have. "That is how I grew up my whole life. Right now I am searching for another James Kamte, another Tiger Woods, not just in SA but in Africa. MARCH/APRIL 2021 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS

"I am searching for that one kid that can go out there and make a difference not just for themselves but to someone else. "I believe there are a lot of kids that have the same talent I have and even more. I was given an opportunity, and my job is to discover that undiscovered talent and give them an opportunity," he says. With a new sponsor, SMTAX, onboard since 2020, Kamte has committed to getting himself back into the winners' circle of the Sunshine Tour, with a tournament win and a top 10 finish.

CEO at SMTAX, Buchule Sibaca says they are committed to supporting black excellence. "It is with that spirit that we are backing James Kamte. We are also proud to support the James Kamte Foundation in helping young kids and more females get into the game of Golf," says Sibaca. A new light gleams in Kamte's eyes: "There is no shortcut to life, work hard, but with all I have said, try God and you will succeed. Get yourself together and try God." FIGHTING CANCER FOR GRANT VANDERWAGEN Grant Vanderwagen had a tumour removed in November 2020, the tumour was malignant and called Paraganglioma, a very rare form of cancer. Luckily surgery was successful and the doctors managed to remove the tumour, however, they had to remove Grant's right kidney while doing this. They also had to reconstruct Grant's vena cava which was a success. The superior vena cava is the large vein which returns blood to the heart from the head, neck and both upper limbs. 5 months later and Grant has just found out that cancer has spread to his chest, neck and the base of his skull. Grant is busy with consultations with doctors and professors to see what the best way forward will be. It does not look good and it seems as if the only options are chemo, radiation or nuclear medicine, sadly, neither of these are cheap. This is where we'd like to help Grant. While he undergoes consultations, we would like to support him by raising funds to help him pay for the best possible solution. Grant is on medical aid, however, medical aid will not cover any of the procedures due to the surgery he underwent late in 2020. Grant, his family and friends managed to raise enough funds to cover the first surgery and now that it has spread, we're all hoping to do it again. We know that it will be a long and expensive road to recovery for Grant but with your help he can get through it. Every bit helps and a small donation could lead to saving Grant's life. Can you help us by donating towards the medical funds for Grant Vanderwagen? Every cent will go towards his medical bills and helping him recover. On behalf of Grant Vanderwagen, we thank you in advance for the support.
